The transformation of traditional grid networks towards smart-grid and microgrid concepts raises many critical issues, and quality in the power supply is one of the prominent ones that needs further research. Developing and applying power quality (PQ) recognition methods with efficient and reliable analysis are essential to the fast-growing issues related to modern smart power distribution systems. In this regard, a hybrid algorithm is proposed for PQ events detection and classification using Elasticnet Regression-based Variational Mode Decomposition (ER-VMD) and Salp Swarm Algorithm optimized Probabilistic Neural Network (SSA-PNN). The Elasticnet Regression (ER) process is suggested to modify the conventional VMD approach instead of the Tikhonov Regularization (TR) method to enhance performance and obtain better band-limited intrinsic mode functions. This idea results in robust and effective reconstruction features and helps to obtain accurate classification using the classifier. In the classification stage, a Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) based PNN is used for the PQ event, considering the relevant features obtained from ER-VMD. The system parameters often influence PNN performance, and SSA is used to determine the ideal values to improve the PNN's capacity for more accurate classification. The numerical values of the accuracy percentage, percentage of sensitivity, and percentage of specificity in the case of real-time data are found as 98.58, 100, and 98.46, respectively. The acquired comparison findings demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed technique in terms of rapid learning speed, smaller computational complexity, robust performance for anti-noise conditions, and accurate identification and categorization.

With the remarkable growth and implementation of communication technology, sensors, and measurement equipment in the Smart Grid (SG) environment, demand side management (DSM) and demand response (DRs) can be easily implementable in residential energy systems integrated with renewable energy sources (RES). Looking at this perspective, this paper suggests an intelligent and dynamic load-priority-based scheduling optimal smart residential energy management system (REMS). The objectives to achieve through priority-based scheduling in the case of a residential energy management system are multi-focussed in terms of peak load reduction, consumer choice of consumption according to priority basis, and cost-effectiveness towards electricity price savings. The issues related to uncertainties with RES due to environmental dependency must be incorporated into the DSM. A single objective discrete formulation based on the Adaptive Salp Swarm Algorithm (ASSA) has been done on modelling and optimizing the crucial system parameters for scheduling, ideally the operation of residential appliances, along with the sources and prioritized-based loads available. System constraints, consumer priorities, energy source availability, uncertainties, and objectives are considered in the formulation to justify the approach that is feasible in real-time conditions. To enhance the search capabilities of SSA, the control parameters vary optimally in both the exploration and exploitation stages of searching. Comparative results with genetic algorithms (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and conventional SSA are presented in different cases, such as (1) traditional homes without REMS, (ii) smart homes with REMS (iii) smart homes using REMS with RES.

This research presents a process for analyzing a hybrid microgrid's dependability using a fuzzy Markov model. The research initiated an analysis of the various microgrid components, such as wind power systems, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and battery storage systems. The states that are induced by component failures are represented using a state-space model. The research continues by suggesting a hybrid microgrid reliability model that analyzes data using a Markov process. Problems arise when trying to estimate reliability metrics for the microgrid using data that is both restricted and imprecise. This is why the study takes uncertainties into account to make microgrid reliability estimations more realistic. The importance of microgrid components concerning their overall availability is evaluated using fuzzy sets and reliability assessments. The study uses numerical analysis and then carefully considers the outcomes. The overall availability of hybrid microgrids is 0.99999.

The traditional power system is facing significant transformations due to the integration of emerging technologies, renewable energy sources (RES), and storage devices. This review focuses on the shift from centralized to decentralized control, enhancing flexibility for stakeholders, and the challenges it entails. The paper identifies the problem of limited adaptability in traditional power systems, which restricts stakeholder flexibility and renewable energy source integration. To address this, the paper proposes a transition to a decentralized system. It explores the effects of power system privatization and restructuring, fostering a competitive market across generation, transmission, and distribution levels. It discusses how integrating distributed generations (DGs) and demand-side management (DSM) with ICT protocols can enhance power system control and management efficiency and reliability. The review delves into the challenges of deregulated electricity market (DEM), especially integrating new generation sources and promoting prosumer participation. It proposes leveraging DSM to manage supply–demand variability and support renewable generation integration in distribution sectors. It also discusses the necessity for renewable power producers to develop effective market bidding strategies. The review concludes with key findings and future research directions, providing an overview of the evolving energy market’s trajectory. It aims to inform sustainable and efficient power system discourse and future policy and decision-making.

The widespread integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into power systems using power electronics-based interface devices has led to a substantial rise in power quality (PQ) issues. There is an immediate requirement for effective monitoring, detection, and classification of power quality disturbances (PQDs) that is needed to take remedial measures and design planning of the system architecture. This study presents a hybrid approach with an objective for the feature extraction and classification of PQDs. The proposed hybrid approach is comprised of an optimized tunable-Q wavelet transform (OTQWT) for the feature extraction and incremental support vector machine (ISVM). A four-stage approach is suggested for the PQ detection and classification in this study. In the first stage, the various data are retrieved both in the form of synthetic data by mathematical formulations and real-time data with prototype design setup. In the second stage, regardless of the specified wavelet function, the PQD signals are decomposed into low-pass and high-pass sub-bands using the tunable-Q wavelet transform (TQWT). However, the utilization of default decomposition parameters to address nonstationary PQ signals may lead to information loss and reduced performance of the system. To avoid this limitation, an OTQWT as an enhanced technique to TQWT based on an Adaptive Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO) is suggested. A modified objective function based on the mean square error (MSE) is used to improve the decomposition process. In the third stage, an efficient classifier is suggested based on the ISVM. Lastly, to test and evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, twelve types of PQDs including noise and multiple occurrences are considered. The comparative analysis with other popular methods reflects the better performance of the proposed approach and justifies its use for PQ detection and classification purposes in real-time​ conditions.

Power quality (PQ) monitoring and detection has emerged as an essential requirement due to the proliferation of sensitive power electronic interfacing devices, electric vehicle charging stations, energy storage devices, and distributed generation energy sources in the recent smart grid and microgrid scenarios. Even though, to date, the traditional approaches play a vital role in providing a solution to the above issue, the limitations, such as the requirement of significant human effort and not being scalable for large-scale power systems, force us to think of alternative approaches. Looking at a better perspective, deep-learning (DL) has gained the main attraction for various researchers due to its inherent capability to classify the data by extracting dominating and prominent features. This manuscript attempts to provide a comprehensive review of PQ detection and classification based on DL approaches to explore its potential, efficiency, and consistency to produce results accurately. In addition, this state-of-the-art review offers an overview of the novel concepts and the step-by-step method for detecting and classifying PQ events. This review has been presented categorically with DL approaches, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), autoencoders, and recurrent neural networks (RNNs), to analyze PQ data. This paper also highlights the challenges and limitations of using DL for PQ analysis, and identifies potential areas for future research. This review concludes that DL algorithms have shown promising PQ detection and classification results, and could replace traditional methods.
