Although mine closures are an inherent feature of extractive industry, they tend to receive less attention in the literature on deindustrialization than the closures of manufacturing and other heavy industries. Until recently, the settler-colonial context of hinterland mineral development and its impact on northern Indigenous lands and communities in Canada have also remained largely unexplored within this literature. Mineral development is historically associated with the introduction of a colonial-capitalist industrial modernity across Canada's northern regions. Yet the boom-and-bust nature and ultimate ephemerality of mineral development has meant that resource-extractive regions have also been subject to intensive 'cyclonic' periods of closure and deindustrialization. This article examines the experience of deindustrialization on the part of the Inuit community of Arctic Bay, who were largely 'left behind' by the closure of Nanisivik, Canada's first High Arctic mine. Through documentary sources and oral history interviews we illustrate how, for Arctic Bay Inuit who were engaged in the cyclonic economies of Nanisivik's development and closure, there were myriad dimensions of social loss, displacement, and resentment associated with the failure of this industrial enterprise to deliver promised benefits to Inuit, beyond more commonly understood socioeconomic impacts such as job loss. During the eighteenth century, a vibrant tradition of choral and orchestral music nourished among the Chiquitano Indigenous people. Coerced into entering Jesuit missions in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru (now eastern Bolivia) the Chiquitano first heard and then began to make music in a European style. Archival sources preserve several operas and large-scale liturgical compositions written entirely in the Chiquitano language and attributed to Indigenous composers. Unlike the heavy counterpoint of other New World sacred music, ths repertoire is characterized by simple harmonies, regular cadence patterns, and transparent textures. In three analytical vignettes, this article explains how the galant style of this mission music helped to achieve the colonial aims of European settlers. Previous scholars have generally celebrated the exceptional status of this unusual body of music and pointed to it as proof of an isolated set of instances in which traditional power hierarchies between colonizers and Indigenous colonized were unstable. Drawing on Brian Larkin, Homi Bhabha, and Franz Fanon, this article by contrast suggests that the specific aesthetic forms produced by the Chiquitano were vital in helping to shape them as colonial subjects. The galant style of their music was both easy to participate in and impressive to experience. Taking this seriously means rewriting our European narrative of the galant and retelling it, in part, as one of cultural imperialism and colonial hegemony. Redfern is an inner-city Sydney suburb readily identified as an urban Aboriginal centre where pan-Aboriginal liberation politics of the 1970s fluoresced, where Aboriginal self-determination in the form of services--legal, medical, women's and children--began, where land rights were recognised, where culture was celebrated and revived through theatre productions, and where people, many just freed from institutional life, recovered a sense of belonging. It must have been a thrilling and exciting time of liberation and becoming, save for the surrounding hostile society and its police force. Yet Aboriginal people's engagement in the local economy is rarely canvassed in the history of this significant place, nor how the changing local economy informed the apparent evaporation of optimism for community housing by the late 1980s. This paper therefore contributes an analysis of a significant urban and political Indigenous place shaped by material conditions and an abiding desire to maintain important aspects of cultural traditions. The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the subtle and blatant prejudice scale toward indigenous people in Argentina and its relationship with right wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, tolerance for disagreement, ideological-political self-positioning, sex and age. A sample of 304 participants from Buenos Aires was selected using a non-probabilistic incidental method. Participants were aged from 18 to 41 years and they were asked to fill a self-report questionnaire including an Argentinean version of the subtle and blatant prejudice toward indigenous people scale together with right wing authoritarianism scale, social dominance orientation scale, tolerance for disagreement scale, ideological-political self-positioning scale. We found adequate psychometrics properties for the subtle and blatant prejudice scale, as well as significant and positive correlations with right wing authoritarianism, tolerance for disagreement, social dominance orientation and political self-placement. Background: People of Aboriginal (Indigenous) ancestry are more likely to experience traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI) than other Canadians; however, outcome studies are limited. This study aims to compare Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal populations with acute TSCI with respect to preinjury baseline characteristics, injury severity, treatment, outcomes and length of stay. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of participants with a TSCI who were enrolled in the prospective Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry (RHSCIR), Saskatoon site (Royal University Hospital), between Feb. 13, 2010, and Dec. 17, 2016. Demographic, injury and management data were assessed to identify any differences between the populations. Results: Of the 159 patients admitted to Royal University Hospital with an acute TSCI during the study period, 62 provided consent and were included in the study. Of these, 21 self-identified as Aboriginal (33.9%) and 41 as non-Aboriginal (66.1%) on treatment intake forms. Compared with non-Aboriginal participants, Aboriginal participants were younger, had fewer medical comorbidities, had a similar severity of neurologic injury and had similar clinical outcomes. However, the time to discharge to the community was significantly longer for Aboriginal participants (median 104.0 v. 34.0 d, p = 0.016). Although 35% of non-Aboriginal participants were discharged home from the acute care site, no Aboriginal participants were transferred home directly. Conclusion: This study suggests a need for better allocation of resources for transition to the community for Aboriginal people with a TSCI in Saskatchewan. Malgre cela, il y a peu d'etudes sur les consequences de cet evenement. Notre etude visait a comparer les cas de traumatisme medullaire aigu dans les populations autochtones et non autochtones sur plusieurs plans : les caracteristiques initiales des patients, la gravite du traumatisme, la nature du traitement, les issues cliniques et la duree de sejour. Methodes : Nous avons fait une analyse retrospective des dossiers de personnes ajoutees au Rick Hansen Spinal Cord Injury Registry (RHSCIR) [Registre des traumatismes medullaires Rick Hansen] entre le 13 fevrier 2010 et le 17 decembre 2016 pour l'etablissement de Saskatoon (l'H[delta]pital universitaire Royal). Nous avons compare les renseignements de base des patients ainsi que les donnees sur le traumatisme et la prise en charge afin de cerner toute difference entre les populations. Resultats : Sur les 159 traumatises medullaires admis a l'H[delta]pital universitaire Royal pendant la periode a l'etude, 62 ont consenti a l'utilisation de leurs donnees. Parmi eux, 21 s'etaient identifies comme Autochtones (33,9 %) sur le formulaire d'hospitalisation, et 41 comme non-Autochtones (66,1 %). Par rapport aux non-Autochtones, les Autochtones etaient plus jeunes, avaient moins de comorbidites, presentaient une atteinte neurologique de gravite comparable et connaissaient a peu pres le meme tableau clinique. Toutefois, le delai avant leur retour en communaute etait significativement plus long (mediane : 104,0 jours contre 34,0 jours; p = 0,016). Aucun participant autochtone n'a ete renvoye directement a la maison, alors que 35 % des participants non autochtones sont retournes chez eux en quittant les soins de premiere ligne. Conclusion : Cette etude montre qu'il faut ameliorer la repartition des ressources de retour dans la communaute pour les traumatises medullaires autochtones de la Saskatchewan.
