Objectives: This study aimed to compare the design outcomes of anterior crowns generated using deep learning (DL)-based software with those fabricated by a technician using conventional dental computer-assisted design (CAD) software without DL support, with a focus on the evaluation of crown morphology, function, and aesthetics., Methods: Twenty-five in vivo datasets comprising maxillary and mandibular arch scans of prepared maxillary central incisors were utilized to design anterior crowns by using three methods: 1) a DL-based method resulting in as-generated outcome (DB), 2) a DL-based method further optimized by a technician (DM), and 3) a conventional CAD-based method (NC, control). Evaluations were conducted for crown morphology (total discrepancy volume (TDV), root mean square (RMS), positive average (PA) and negative average (NA) deviations), functional aspects (incisal path: deviations, length, and mean inclination), and aesthetics (crown width, height, width-to-height ratio, angular radius of mesioincisal line angle, proximal contact length, and tooth axis angle)., Results: Significant differences in TDV ratio were noted between the DB-NC (32.3 ± 8.5 %) and DM-NC (26.5 ± 5.4 %) pairs (P = 0.006). No significant differences were observed in TDV between the DB-NC (65.3 ± 24.4 mm 3 ) and DM-NC (54.3 ± 21.0 mm 3 ) pairs (P = 0.095). For the entire palatal surface, significant differences in RMS and PA values were observed between the DB-NC and DM-NC pairs (P < 0.037). Significant differences in RMS values for the incisal half (P = 0.021) and in PA values for the cervical half (P = 0.047) of the palatal surface were also noted between these pairs. Significant differences in the deviation of the incisal path were observed between the DB-NC (290.4 ± 212.4 μm) and DM-NC (132.0 ± 122.3 μm) pairs (P < 0.001). However, no significant differences were found among the groups (DB, DM, and NC) in terms of the length and mean inclination of incisal paths or in aesthetic outcomes., Conclusions: A DL-based method can result in promising outcomes with clinically acceptable morphology and aesthetics for anterior crowns. Objective: To assess the 2D and 3D natural symmetry of the maxillary incisors., Materials and Methods: Maxillary alginate impressions were taken of 59 young adult volunteers. Gender, orthodontic treatment history, and dominant hand were collected. For 2D analysis, a digital caliper was used for measurements on maxillary casts. For 3D analysis, the casts were scanned using a lab scanner, and the labial surface symmetry of contralateral incisors was evaluated. Mann-Whitney tests and Student's t-test were performed, α = 0.05., Results: Results indicated a lack of identical lengths among contralateral central or lateral incisors, with minimal occurrences of identical width measurements. 68% of central incisors and 73% of lateral incisors showed differences in length exceeding 0.2 mm. Central incisors showed more similarities than lateral incisors in width, with 61% central incisors and 47% lateral incisors having differences under 0.2 mm. The differences between highly asymmetrical contralateral teeth are situated at the transitional lines. The influence of sexual dimorphism, orthodontic factors, and the dominant hand on incisors' symmetry was not statistically significant., Conclusions: 2D and 3D symmetry of the natural maxillary incisors are rare. 3D symmetry remains consistent across orthodontic treatment status, gender, and dominant hand, suggesting its independence from such parameters., Clinical Significance: To achieve a natural and aesthetic smile rehabilitation, the symmetry of the maxillary incisors must be well understood. In our study, 2D and 3D symmetry of the maxillary incisors occurred rarely, but central incisors showed more similarities than lateral incisors in width, with differences under 0.2 mm. On the other hand, differences between highly asymmetrical contralateral teeth are situated at the transitional lines. Background: This study used micro-focus X-ray Computed Tomography (micro-XCT) to examine the anatomical differences and dimensions of the maxillary incisive canal (MIC) in a South African population. The accurate imaging yielded dependable results that support earlier research and enhance anterior maxilla surgery planning. Furthermore, these anatomical features are compared between various racial and gender groupings in the study., Methods: Using a micro-XCT scanner, 108 human cadaver skulls from the Pretoria Bone Collection were scanned and included in the study. Advanced volume rendering software was employed for measuring the MIC length, diameter, shape, and the buccal bone wall measurements in relation to the MIC., Results: Significant anatomical variation in the size and shape of the MIC was identified in the population, with variations seen between racial and gender groups. The incisive foramen (ICO) mean diameter was 6.61 mm, and the MIC length varied from 4.96 to 20.10 mm. There were significant differences in the buccal alveolar bone height between different ethnic groups and gender. Regarding morphological patterns in coronal and sagittal views, single canals were more common in the black population while Y-shaped canals were more common in the white population. The study also introduced a new metric by measuring the mean distances between teeth #11 and #21 and the ICO (1.83 mm and 1.88 mm respectively)., Conclusions: The complex anatomical differences of the MIC in a South African population were clarified. Clinicians should be aware of tooth sockets in near proximity to the MIC and perform accurate preoperative assessment using sophisticated 3-D imaging and preferable guided implant placement in the anterior maxilla., (© 2024. Background: Immediate implant placement (IIP) has shown predictable outcomes when specific requirements are met. The aim of the present study was to radiographically evaluate the dimensions of mandibular incisors and the alveolar bone to further determine the feasibility of IIP in this area., Materials and Methods: A total of 404 intact mandibular incisor CBCT images from 101 patients (42 males, 59 females; mean age 49 ± 16.84 years) were analyzed. The mesiodistal tooth width and the distance between the incisal edge (IE), cementoenamel junction (CEJ), facial bone crest (BC), root apex (RA), and fenestration point (F) were registered, together with the alveolar bone width at 1 and 3 mm below BC. Finally, the angular discrepancy between the dental and the alveolar bone long axis (BLA) was recorded as the tooth torque (TT)., Results: The CEJ to BC distance was 3.23 ± 1.67 mm. The RA to F mean distance was 15.02 ± 3.97 mm. The mean alveolar bone buccolingual widths at 1 and 3 mm below the facial BC were 7.12 ± 0.82 and 6.32 ± 0.71 mm in the lateral and central incisors, respectively (P 0.001). The buccolingual width was less than 6 mm in more than 33% of the central incisors, but only in 3% of the lateral incisors, displaying increased alveolar width. The average was 165.66 ± 7.47 degrees., Conclusions: The results presented in this study point toward the need for careful consideration of the requirements for anterior mandibular IIP for success and predictability purposes.

Statement of the Problem: When replacing the maxillary central incisor (MCI) or adjusting its dimensions, Syrian dentists may have difficulties in selecting the appropriate size due to the lack of a dental anthropometric database for Syrian society. Purpose: The purpose of this observational study was to investigate the correlation between MCI dimensions and face length and width in Syrian females and males. Materials and Methods: The study included 180 Syrian participants (90 females and 90 males) without facial or dental defects and aged between 20 and 25 years. A digital photograph of each individual's face was taken to measure face length and width. Maxillary stone casts were made for each individual to assess the MCI width and height using a digital caliper. The correlation between facial and dental variables was investigated with the Pearson correlation coefficient. Moreover, intersex variations were tested using an independent-sample t -test ( p < 0.05 considered significant). Results: The mean MCI width was 8.58 mm, the mean MCI cervical width was 7.96 mm, the mean MCI height was 9.69 mm, the average MCI width-to-height ratio was 89%, and the average MCI cervical width-to-height ratio was 82%. The intersex variations in dental values were not statistically significant. None of the studied facial dimensions showed any significant correlation with any of the MCI measurements. Conclusion: The faces of Syrian men were larger than those of Syrian women, but their MCIs had similar proportions and sizes. Purpose: To investigate the influence of a single infrapositioned ankylosed tooth or implant-supported restoration on smile esthetics., Materials and Methods: A series of 48 digitally modified images that simulated varying degrees of infraposition (from 0.25 to 2.0 mm, with a step of 0.25 mm) were created for each maxillary anterior tooth by altering the full-portrait image of a smiling man, adjusted to show medium and high smile lines. For the model with the high smile line, a series of 24 digitally modified images were created that simulated the infraposition of a single anterior tooth with a restored incisal edge. Smile esthetics for each of the images were evaluated by 160 participants (80 dentists and 80 laypersons), and a visual analog scale (VAS) was implemented., Results: For the images with the high smile line, an infraposition of ≥ 0.25 mm in the central incisor region and ≥ 0.5 mm in the region of the lateral incisor or the canine had a negative effect on the perceived smile esthetics for both the dentists and the laypersons. Regarding the medium smile line, an infraposition of ≥ 0.5 mm in the central and lateral incisor region had a negative effect on the perceived smile esthetics for both groups of observers. In the canine area, an infraposition of ≥ 0.5 mm for the dentists and ≥ 0.75 mm for the laypersons also had a negative impact on the smile esthetics., Conclusions: Even a minor infraposition of a single maxillary anterior ankylosed tooth or implant-supported restoration can reduce the perceived attractiveness of the smile. Infraposition in the canine site can be better tolerated in a medium smile line compared to a high smile line. In patients with a high smile line, prosthetic intervention is needed to restore the incisal edge of an infrapositioned tooth without harmonizing the gingival contour; this can be beneficial for the lateral incisor but ineffective for the central incisor and unfavorable for the canine.

This study aimed to explore the clinical applicability of the shade-matching function in intraoral scanners. This study measured the tooth colors of maxillary anterior dentitions of 83 adults using visual matching, a spectrophotometer, and a scanner according to two color systems: VITA Classical (VC) and VITA 3D-Master (V3D). Agreement between each method was assessed by weighted Cohen's kappa coefficient (K W , α = 0.05). For V3D, the overall agreement between the scanner and spectrophotometer (K W = 0.498) was higher than that between the scanner and visual matching (K W = 0.473). Similarly, the agreement between the scanner and spectrophotometer (K W = 0.283) was higher than that between a scanner and visual matching (K W = 0.140) for VC. Regarding tooth position, the highest agreement between the scanner and spectrophotometer was observed on the right central incisor (K W = 0.542) for V3D. Tooth color measurement with a scanner was comparable to that with a spectrophotometer, especially on the central incisors when using the VITA 3D-Master system. A scanner could serve as an alternative to a spectrophotometer for shade selection. However, color matching should still be visually verified., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Objectives: This study aims to provide craniofacial features and incisor position prediction models among esthetics population after orthodontic treatment., Methods: A total of 338 patients with esthetic profiles were selected from 1 055 post-orthodontic adults based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and scored by five dental students. Mean values of cephalometric measurement were demonstrated with gender and sagittal skeletal pattern (ANB) differences assessed by generalized estimating equation. Correlations among age, skeletal, and soft tissue variables in different genders were determined. Multivariate analysis was used to assess the influence of skeletal and soft tissue variables on orthodontic incisor position., Results: Within the esthetic cohort after orthodontic treatment, gender differences existed in cranial and mandibular length, mandibular rotation, protrusion of pogonion, inclination of maxillary incisors, upper lip thickness, lower 1/3 face height, and nose protrusion. However, in class Ⅰ malocclusion, the development of the chin showed no significance, whereas the protrusion of the lower lip significantly differed between genders, with less protrusion in males. In males, the protrusion of lip and chin varied among groups, with thinner basic upper lip thickness of class Ⅱ than class Ⅰ and greater lower lip height of class Ⅲ than class Ⅰ. In females, the protrusion and height of the upper lip and chin varied in groups, with thicker basic upper lip thickness of class Ⅲ than class Ⅰ. Upper lip thickness, female basic upper lip thickness, and female lower lip height were correlated with age. The protrusion of the upper lip was mainly correlated with posterior cranial base, mandibular body length, ANB in male and SNA, ANB, sagittal maxillary length, mandibular rotation, and protrusion of pogonion in female. The protrusion of the lower lip in males was mainly correlated with ramus height, mandibular rotation, protrusion of pogonion in male and ANB, mandibular rotation, and protrusion of pogonion in females. After employing skeletal variables to fit dental parameters, optimal results were achieved in male IMPA (adjusted R 2 =0.712) and female G Vert-U1 (adjusted R 2 =0.795). After employing skeletal and soft tissue variables simultaneously, optimal results were achieved in male and female G Vert-U1, which was mainly influenced by the protrusion of the chin and nasal base in males (adjusted R 2 =0.836) and the protrusion of the nasal base as well as ANB in females (adjusted R 2 =0.842)., Conclusions: This study demonstrated the craniofacial features of esthetics population after orthodontic treatment and revealed the correlation of gender, age, skeleton, and soft tissues to provide reliable prediction models for aesthetic orthodontic incisor position.

Objective: The aim of this study is to measure the distance from the midline of the upper incisors to the lower pole of the tonsils in paediatric patients of varying ages. This will enable the design of accurately sized tonsil tie simulators., Methods: Two hundred patients between 1 year and 16 years old were recruited in this prospective observational study. The patient's age and the mean distance from the midline of the upper incisors to the lower pole of the tonsils were plotted into a scatter plot and the line of best fit was calculated., Results: The equation for the line of best fit was: distance (mm) = 1.9604 × age (digitalised years) + 72.436., Conclusion: This is the first study to measure the anatomical distance from the upper incisor teeth to the inferior tonsillar pole in a paediatric population. This can be used to accurately size tonsil tie simulators and enhance their fidelity.

Objectives: We conducted a three-dimensional (3D) analysis of orthodontic tooth movement (TM) using digital dental models (DMs), focusing on the palatal region of interest (PROI), aiming to evaluate the long-term stability of the PROI, validate the 3D TM analysis with PROI registration, and compare it with conventional lateral cephalometric analyses., Methods: Twenty adult patients treated with a multibracket appliance were evaluated at their first visit (T0) and at least 5 years later (T1) using DMs and lateral cephalograms (LCs). The long-term stability of PROI was assessed by calculating the point cloud distances between DM-T0 and DM-T1. TM analysis using DM with PROI registration for the maxillary central incisors was assessed through linear and angular measurements in the sagittal view and subsequently compared with the LCs., Results: The average point cloud distance of the PROI between DM-T0 and DM-T1 was 0.21 mm (standard deviation, 0.13 mm). TM analysis using DMs demonstrated excellent reproducibility for both linear and angular measurements (intra-rater correlation coefficient, > 0.99). The 95 % limits of agreement between the DM and LC measurements were < 5.14° for angular change, 3.53 mm for horizontal displacement, and 0.98 mm for vertical displacement. No significant differences were observed in the angular and linear measurements when the TM was compared using the DMs and LCs., Conclusions: The PROI remained stable for over 5 years, supporting the reproducibility and accuracy of TM assessment using PROI registration in orthodontic clinical practice., Clinical Significance: DM analysis lacks the risks associated with X-ray exposure and can be easily performed in daily clinical practice, indicating its potential for future clinical applications. Statement of Problem: Consideration of the thickness of alveolar bone on both the palatal and labial sides and the inclination angle of teeth is important for immediate implant placement in the maxillary anterior region. However, comprehensive research exploring how sex and age influence the thickness of bone and tooth angle in the maxillary anterior region is lacking., Purpose: The purpose of this clinical study was to investigate the effect of sex and age on the thickness of labial and palatal bone and on the tooth inclination angle of maxillary central and lateral incisors using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in an Asian population., Material and Methods: The labial and palatal bone thickness and the inclination angle of maxillary central and lateral incisors were measured from the CBCT images of 149 participants aged between 20 and 65 years. The correlation between the angles of the maxillary central and lateral incisors and sex and age on the tooth angles and thicknesses of labial and palatal bone was determined statistically., Results: A high correlation (R=0.73) was found between the angle of maxillary central and lateral incisors. Men had higher angles of the maxillary central and lateral incisors and thicker palatal bone at the middle and root of the teeth compared with women. In both sexes, the angle and palatal bone thickness of maxillary central incisors were significantly higher than those of maxillary lateral incisors. The angle of both maxillary central and lateral incisors decreased gradually with age, with a difference in angle of over 10 degrees., Conclusions: The study revealed that women exhibited relatively thinner palatal bone compared with men. Additionally, participants aged between 40 and 65 years exhibited significantly thicker palatal bone compared with younger age groups, potentially providing a larger site for implant placement. Background: To prevent the absorption and collapse of the labial bone plate of the anterior teeth, immediate implantation and socket shield technique have been increasingly applied to anterior dental aesthetic implant restoration., Objective: To provide a biomechanical basis for implant restoration of maxillary anterior teeth, finite element analysis was used to investigate the stress peak and distribution in different anatomical sites of natural teeth, conventional immediate implantation and socket shield technique., Methods: Three maxillary finite element models were established, including a maxillary incisor as a natural tooth, a conventional immediate implantation and a socket shield technique. A mechanical load of 100 N was applied to simulate and analyze the biomechanical behavior of the root, periodontal ligament (PDL), implant and surrounding bone interface., Results: The stress distribution of the natural tooth was relatively uniform under load. The maximum von Mises stress of the root, periodontal ligament, cortical bone and cancellous bone were 20.14 MPa, 2.473 MPa, 19.48 MPa and 5.068 MPa, respectively. When the conventional immediate implantation was loaded, the stress was mainly concentrated around the neck of implant. Maximum stress on the surface of the implant was 102 MPa, the cortical bone was 16.13 MPa, and the cancellous bone was 18.29 MPa. When the implantation with socket shield technique was loaded, the stress distribution of the implant was similar to that of immediate implantation. Maximum stress on the surface of the implant was 100.5 MPa, the cortical bone was 23.11 MPa, the cancellous bone was 21.66 MPa, the remaining tooth fragment was 29.42 MPa and the periodontal ligament of the tooth fragment was 1.131 MPa., Conclusions: 1. Under static loading, both socket shield technology and conventional immediate implantation can support the esthetic restoration of anterior teeth biomechanically. 2.Under short-term follow-up, both immediate implant and socket shield technology achieved satisfactory clinical results, including bone healing and patient satisfaction. 3.The stress distribution is mainly located on the buccal bone surface of the implant and is associated with resorption of the buccal bone plate after implant replacement in both socket shield technology and conventional immediate implantation. 4.The presence of retained root fragment had an impact on the bone graft gap. The purpose of this study was to explore maxillary lateral incisors (MxLI) intern morphology by analyzing existing literature. We searched five electronical databases (Cochrane, Embase, LILACS, Scopus, MEDLINE via PubMed) using keywords and predefined search terms. Additional studies were identified by cross-referencing and reviewing bibliographies of relevant articles. From 92 initial studies, 27 duplicates were removed, and 65 records screened. After full-text review and hand searching were 19 studies included. The most reported root canal configurations (RCC) of MxLI were Vertucci (Ve) I (1-1-1/1; 78.1-100%), Ve II (2-2-1/1; 0.2-5%), Ve III (1-2-1/1; 0.1-14.6%), Ve IV (2-2-2/2; 0.5%), and Ve V (1-1-2/2; 0.5-4.9%). A meta-analysis of six studies from Europe and Asia indicated sex-differentiated patterns in RCC prevalence: higher occurrences of Ve II (2-2-1/1; OR [95%CI] = 1.19 [0.51, 2.73]), Ve III (1-2-1/1; (OR [95%CI] = 1.72 [0.61, 4.85]), and Ve V (1-1-2/2; (OR [95%CI] = 2.95 [1.02, 8.55]) configurations were noted in males, whereas females predominantly exhibited Ve I (1-1-1/1; [95%CI] = 0.99 [0.97, 1.02]), and Ve IV (2-2-2/2; (OR [95%CI] = 0.11 [0.01, 2.02]). Examination methods varied, with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) being most commonly (n = 11), followed by staining & clearing (n = 5), and radiographic analysis (n = 1). The predominant RCC in MxLI is type Vertucci I. CBCT is the most common method for assessing the morphology of root canals. However, up to 20% of cases may present with complex and sex-specific patterns, highlighting the need for clinicians to be aware of these differences to prevent complications during endodontic treatments., (© 2024. Background: This study highlights the need for precise and efficient methods to measure palatal mucosal thickness in the maxillary anterior teeth, particularly for soft tissue augmentation in the aesthetic zone. The research evaluates three digital imaging techniques, suggesting that Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) combined with intraoral scanners (IOS) is a promising approach for reliable clinical assessment., Methods: Ten volunteers with healthy periodontium were selected, and three methods were employed: CBCT-based indirect gingival imaging, modified soft tissue CBCT (ST-CBCT), and CBCT combined with IOS. Measurements of palatal mucosal thickness were taken at multiple points along the palatal gingival margin. Statistical analysis included Bland-Altman plots for method agreement and intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) analysis for reliability. All measurements were standardized, repeated for consistency, and accurate to 0.01 mm to ensure reliability., Results: The Bland-Altman plots showed that less than 5% of the points for palatal mucosal thickness differences measured by the gingival indirect radiographic method, modified ST-CBCT, and CBCT combined with IOS were located outside the 95% limits of agreement (LoA). The mean value of the differences was within 0.2 mm, indicating good clinical agreement among the three methods. The inter- and intra-study ICC values for palatal mucosal thickness measurements of the maxillary anterior teeth using the three CBCT methods were greater than 0.75 (P < 0.001), demonstrating reproducibility., Conclusions: Based on the evaluation of three digital imaging techniques, this study indicates that the combination of CBCT with IOS is a feasible method for measuring palatal mucosal thickness in the maxillary anterior teeth and demonstrates good reproducibility., (© 2024. Introduction: Symmetry is balance, some correspondence in the size, form, and arrangements of parts on opposite sides of a plane, line, or point. The opposite of this concept is asymmetry, or imbalance., Objective: This retrospective study compared two methods for assessing arch symmetry with linear measurements based on triangles, to determine their applicability and efficiency., Methods: Two groups were enrolled: children (n=20) and adults (n=20), and the arch symmetry was assessed from linear measurements. Method 1: the incisor-canine (INC), canine-molar (CM), and incisor-molar (INM) distances (paired t-test and Pearson correlation). Method 2: a mathematical equation between the cusps measurements of the canines and the distobuccal of the first molars leading to result 1 (t-test for one sample and bootstrapping analysis). Dental casts were digitized and analyzed using a software program. The Bland-Altman test compared the methods (α=0.05)., Results: The Bland-Altman test revealed concordance between the methods; however, separately the results were different: In method 1, the mandibular arch did not demonstrate correlation (children, INC r=0.33; CM r=0.45; INM r=0.51; adults, CM r=0.46; INM r=0.35), however, the maxilla revealed a strong correlation in children and a strong/moderate correlation in adults. In method 2, both arches were symmetrical (p>0.05)., Conclusion: Method 1 may be appropriate during orthodontic treatment, and method 2 may be indicated for final treatment. These methods are useful; however, only method 1 identified the side of asymmetry. The methods can contribute to future studies in syndromic and non-syndromic patients, before and after orthognathic surgeries and orthodontic treatment, comparing results.

Background: Skin tones may be predictive of anterior tooth shade. An analysis of the relationship of skin tone to anterior tooth shade within a population may facilitate the prescription of complete dentures with optimal esthetics and realism., Aim: This study aimed to assess the relationship between skin tones and shades of upper anterior teeth among a diverse Nigerian adult population., Methods: The study was conducted between February and December 2022 among consecutive healthy adults recruited from dental clinics of five teaching hospitals in four cities located across four geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Skin tones were recorded using the National Immigration Service (NIS) Skin Color scale. The Vitapan Classic® shade guide was used to record the tooth shade of the upper central incisors and canines. Bivariate and multivariate tests of associations were performed, and predictive probabilities were developed., Results: A total of 1070 adults with a mean age of 30.8 ± 10 years participated in the study. NIS skin tones 6 (29.8%) and 5 (27.7%) were the most common, while hues A (48.7% in incisors and 48.4 % in canines) and B (41.1% in incisors and 40.1% in canines) were predominant. The values of the incisors and canines were positively related to skin tone (P = 0.001) and age (P = 0.001 for incisors and P = 0.003 for canines). Hue was also significantly associated with skin tone for canines (P = 0.01) and gender (P = 0.001). Regression models showed increasingly darker skin tones were positively related to duller values for incisor teeth (β = 0.173, OR =1.19, P < 0.001). The values for canines were more likely to be >2 (β = 0.118, OR =1.12, P = 0.01), but without significant positive relationship to increasingly darker skin tones (β = -0.99, OR =0.91, P = 0.22)., Conclusion: Skin tones were associated with upper anterior tooth shade. There was a positive relationship between skin tones and the shades of upper anterior teeth. Objectives: To analyse and document internal root morphological variations in permanent anterior teeth using conebeam computed tomography., Methods: The cross-sectional, retrospective study was conducted from January 21 to June 19, 2021, at Jinnah Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Body Scan, and comprised data from July to December 2020 related to all the patients who had been referred to the centre for dental cone-beam computed tomography scan. The scans were evaluated at the Radiology Department of the School of Dentistry at Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Islamabad, Pakistan. The morphology of the roots and root canals in all permanent anterior teeth was examined. Root canal configuration was categorised using Vertucci's classification. Data was analysed using SPSS 20., Results: Of the 211 patients, 116(55%) were females and 95(45%) were males. The overall mean age was 39.9±1.02 years (range: 15-65 years). All the permanent anterior teeth exhibited a single root, with the exception 2(0.9%) mandibular right and 4(1.9%) left canines which had double roots. Type I root canals were observed in all 211 (100%) maxillary right central incisors, maxillary left central incisors and maxillary left canines. Among maxillary right canines, 208(98.6%) had type-I root canals, and the corresponding value for maxillary right lateral incisors was 209(99.1%), and for maxillary left lateral incisors, the value was 210(99.5%). Root canal polymorphism had no significant association with gender (p>0.05)., Conclusions: The presence of type-I root canal was common in permanent anterior teeth, and there was significant association of root canal polymorphism with gender.

Introduction: Variation in the thickness of commercially available preformed rectangular archwires at the bracket positions has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study measured the edgewise (height) and flatwise (width) dimensions of preformed rectangular nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires at bracket positions corresponding to the central incisor, canine, and first molar and compared them among bracket positions., Methods: Sixty types of preformed rectangular NiTi mandibular archwires indicated as 0.019 × 0.025-in were obtained from 14 manufacturers. The height and width dimensions of archwires were measured at 4 points (3 bracket positions corresponding to the central incisor, canine, and first molar, and 1 terminal end) of each side of each archwire using a micrometer and compared with the indicated dimensions using 1-sample t tests. Furthermore, the measured dimensions were compared among the 3 bracket positions using a 1-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni post-hoc test., Results: The measured dimensions were significantly smaller than the indicated dimensions for all points except the central incisor point for height and significantly smaller than the indicated dimensions for all points for width. Comparisons among points showed that for height, the central incisor point was significantly larger than the first molar and terminal points. Objectives: To evaluate the fabrication trueness of additively manufactured maxillary definitive casts with various tooth preparations fabricated with different 3-dimensional (3D) printers and print orientations., Methods: A maxillary typodont with tooth preparations for a posterior 3-unit fixed partial denture, lateral incisor crown, central incisor and canine veneers, first premolar and second molar inlays, and a first molar crown was digitized with an industrial scanner. This scan file was used to fabricate definitive casts with a digital light processing (DLP) or stereolithography (SLA) 3D printer in different orientations (0-degree, 30-degree, 45-degree, and 90-degree) (n = 7). All casts were digitized with the same scanner, and the deviations within each preparation site were evaluated. Generalized linear model analysis was used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05)., Results: The interaction between the 3D printer and the print orientation affected measured deviations within all preparations (P ≤ 0.001) except for the lateral incisor crown and canine veneer (P ≥ 0.094), which were affected only by the main factors (P < 0.001). DLP-90 mostly led to the highest and DLP-0 mostly resulted in the lowest deviations within posterior tooth preparations (P ≤ 0.014). DLP-30 led to the lowest deviations within the first premolar inlay and DLP-45 led to the lowest deviations within the central incisor veneer preparation (P ≤ 0.045)., Conclusions: Posterior preparations of tested casts had the highest trueness with DLP-0 or DLP-30, while central incisor veneer preparations had the highest trueness with DLP-45. DLP-90 led to the lowest trueness for most of the tooth preparations., Clinical Significance: Definitive casts with tooth preparations fabricated with the tested DLP 3D printer and the print orientation adjusted on tooth preparation may enable well-fitting restorations. Objective: Tooth growth and wear are commonly used tools for determining the age of mammals. The most speciose order of marsupials, Diprotodontia, is characterised by a pair of procumbent incisors within the lower jaw. This study examines the growth and wear of these incisors to understand their relationship with age and sex., Design: Measurements of mandibular incisor crown and root length were made for two sister species of macropodid (kangaroos and wallabies); Macropus giganteus and Macropus fuliginosus. Histological analysis examined patterns of dentine and cementum deposition within these teeth. Broader generalisability within Diprotodontia was tested using dentally reduced Tarsipes rostratus - a species disparate in body size and incisor function to the studied macropodids., Results: In the macropodid sample it is demonstrated that the hypsodont nature of these incisors makes measurements of their growth (root length) and wear (crown length) accurate indicators of age and sex. Model fitting finds that root growth proceeds according to a logarithmic function across the lifespan, while crown wear follows a pattern of exponential reduction for both macropodid species. Histological results find that secondary dentine deposition and cementum layering are further indicators of age. Incisor measurements are shown to correlate with age in the sample of T. rostratus., Conclusions: The diprotodontian incisor is a useful tool for examining chronological age and sex, both morphologically and microstructurally. Objective: This study investigated whether there are differences between software programs, voxel sizes, segmentation techniques, and intraoral scanners in terms of volume measurement in incisor teeth., Study Design: Thirty extracted teeth were scanned using a 3D intraoral scanner. Physical volumes were measured using the water displacement method (WDM) as the gold standard. Cone beam computed tomography images were taken at two voxel sizes (0.3-0.4 mm voxel). The volumes of the teeth were calculated using the manual segmentation technique in the 3D Doctor and ImageJ (Fiji) Program, manual and automatic segmentation methods in the ITK-Snap program, and automatic segmentation methods in the 3D Slicer program. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, v 20.0)., Results: There is a significant difference between WDM and 3D Doctor volume measurements at the voxel size of 0.4 mm (P < .05). The 3D Doctor program showed more than 13% difference compared to the WDM. There is no significant difference between WDM, intraoral scanner, ITK-Snap, ImageJ (Fiji), 3D Slicer, and 3D-Doctor volume measurements at the voxel size of 0.3 mm., Conclusions: Measurements with manual segmentation in ITK-Snap and ImageJ programs give the closest results to the physical volume measurements of the teeth. The automatic segmentation method in ITK-Snap and 3D Slicer programs may be preferred due to its ease of use and less time-consuming. Background: Many indices have been suggested to help orthodontists in predicting the ideal dental arch width. One of these was Pont's index which was established by Pont. He suggested equations to predict the ideal maxillary dental arch width (interpremolar and intermolar) from the combined mesiodistal width of the maxillary incisors. This study aimed to test the applicability of Pont's index as an orthodontic diagnostic tool in Egyptian population and to compare the results with those obtained from studies of different ethnic subjects., Methods: This study was performed using dental casts of 184 Egyptian individuals (82 males and 102 females; age range, 19-24 years). The casts were divided into 46 casts with normal occlusion, 46 casts with class I, 46 casts with class II and 46 casts with class III malocclusion, according to Angle's classification. Alginate impressions were taken for all patients and poured immediately using dental plaster. The real models were transformed into digital models using three-dimensional laser scanner to allow digital model analysis. Predicted arch widths were calculated using Pont's equations. The predicted values were compared to the measured values., Results: Intra class correlation coefficient (ICC) (absolute agreement) between measured and predicted arch widths was determined. Background: The determining effect of facial hard tissues on soft tissue morphology in orthodontic patients has yet to be explained. The aim of this study was to clarify the hard-soft tissue relationships of the lower 1/3 of the face in skeletal Class II-hyperdivergent patients compared with those in Class I-normodivergent patients using network analysis., Methods: Fifty-two adult patients (42 females, 10 males; age, 26.58 ± 5.80 years) were divided into two groups: Group 1, 25 subjects, skeletal Class I normodivergent pattern with straight profile; Group 2, 27 subjects, skeletal Class II hyperdivergent pattern with convex profile. Pretreatment cone-beam computed tomography and three-dimensional facial scans were taken and superimposed, on which landmarks were identified manually, and their coordinate values were used for network analysis., Results: (1) In sagittal direction, Group 2 correlations were generally weaker than Group 1. In both the vertical and sagittal directions of Group 1, the most influential hard tissue landmarks to soft tissues were located between the level of cemento-enamel junction of upper teeth and root apex of lower teeth. In Group 2, the hard tissue landmarks with the greatest influence in vertical direction were distributed more forward and downward than in Group 1. (2) In Group 1, all the correlations for vertical-hard tissue to sagittal-soft tissue position and sagittal-hard tissue to vertical-soft tissue position were positive. However, Group 2 correlations between vertical-hard tissue and sagittal-soft tissue positions were mostly negative. Between sagittal-hard tissue and vertical-soft tissue positions, Group 2 correlations were negative for mandible, and were positive for maxilla and teeth., Conclusion: Compared with Class I normodivergent patients with straight profile, Class II hyperdivergent patients with convex profile had more variations in soft tissue morphology in sagittal direction. In vertical direction, the most relevant hard tissue landmarks on which soft tissue predictions should be based were distributed more forward and downward in Class II hyperdivergent patients with convex profile. Aim: The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between the anatomical characteristics of different tooth groups and the diffusion and bleaching effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)., Materials and Methods: Computed tomography (CT) images from five patients were used to assess the hard tissue thickness and pulp volume (PV) of four tooth groups: lower (mandibular) incisors (LI), upper (maxillary) incisors (UI), canines (C), and premolars (PM). Additionally, 80 bovine tooth disks were divided into four groups (n &#61; 20) to match the thickness of each tooth group studied. All the specimens were exposed to a 35% H2O2 bleaching gel, with 50 µL applied for 45 min during the first, second, and third sessions. Diffusion was evaluated using the peroxidase enzyme method. Color change analyses (∆E, ∆E00, and ∆WID) were performed after the three application sessions and 7 days after the bleaching treatment using a spectrophotometer., Results: The PM group showed greater thickness and PV, followed by the C, UI, and LI groups (P 0.001). The LI group had six times greater H2O2 diffusion compared with the PM group (P 0.001), while the PM group exhibited a PV nine times larger than the LI group. Furthermore, the LI and UI groups achieved color saturation with one fewer session than the C and PM groups., Conclusions: Specific tooth groups have anatomical characteristics that interfere with bleaching treatment in terms of the diffusion and whitening effect of H2O2. Furthermore, the diffusion capacity of H2O2 was inversely proportional to the thickness of the tooth groups.

Purpose: To investigate the biomechanical expression of different shapes of attachments on the maxillary anterior teeth during the lingual tooth movement process using clear aligners, providing new insights for orthodontists to improve the clinical design., Methods: In this study, CBCT data were simulated using the three-dimensional finite element technique. Attachments of various shapes, including no attachment(A1), rectangular attachment(A2), wedge-shaped attachment(A3), and curved arc attachment(A4), were designed on the lateral incisors. Ansys software was employed to calculate the three-dimensional changes in the lateral incisors, dental arch, and clear aligners and the distribution of equivalent stress on the periodontal ligament(von Mises) under the same load conditions., Results: The coronal displacement of the lateral incisors showed the following variations: A1＞A4＞A3＞A2. The sagittal displacement exhibited the following variations: A3＞A4＞A1＞A2. The vertical elongation demonstrated the following variations: A4＞A3＞ A1＞A2. The overall displacement of each dental arch displayed an arch-shaped trend. Different regions of the clear aligners exhibited variations in deformation. The von Mises distribution of the periodontal ligament in A1 and A2 group showed similarities, while A3 group exhibited stress concentration only in the lingual area of the root's one-third region. Group A4 experienced significantly higher stress in the cervical region compared to A1 and A2 group., Conclusions: Rectangular attachments and curved arc attachments possess advantages in coronal control, with rectangular attachments exhibiting the best control effect in vertical control. The area of attachment force and actual displacement efficiency do not have an absolute correlation, as the shape of the force-bearing surface can significantly affect its specific biomechanical expression.

Objective: The present study investigated bone remodelling in the upper and lower incisor regions depending on the inclination pattern during the alignment phase of orthodontic treatment (OT)., Materials and Methods: This prospective clinical study included 71 patients undergoing OT without premolar extraction. Cone beam computed tomography scans were taken before and after the alignment phase and the changes in the inclination, alveolar bone height (ABH) and bone thickness (BT) at levels 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9 mm starting from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) were determined., Results: Teeth were divided into 'Retroinclination' (lingual crown inclination <0°), 'Proclination-low' (buccal crown inclination between 0° and 5°), or 'Proclination-high' (buccal crown inclination >5°). The alignment phase of OT resulted in ABH loss. The highest ABH loss in the maxilla was observed on the buccal side in the 'Proclination-high' and was 0.71 mm. ABH loss by 1.1 mm was observed in the mandible on the lingual side in the 'Retroinclination' group. The most significant changes in BT by up to 2 mm were observed at levels 6, 8 and 9 mm and these changes exhibited a moderate to strong correlation with the alterations in the inclination of individual incisors. At levels 2, 3 and 4 mm, the highest decrease in BT by up to 0.83 mm was observed on the palatal side of upper incisors in the 'Proclination-high' group., Conclusion: The direction and amount of tooth inclination partially determine changes in the bone parameters during the alignment phase., (© 2024 The Authors. Objectives: This study presents biological affinities between the last hunter-fisher-gatherers and first food-producing societies from the Nile Valley. We investigate odontometric and dental tissue proportion changes between these populations from the Middle Nile Valley and acknowledge the biological processes behind them., Materials and Methods: Dental remains of 329 individuals from Nubia and Central Sudan that date from the Late Pleistocene to the mid-Holocene are studied. Using 3D imaging techniques, we investigated outer and inner metric aspects of upper central incisors, and first and second upper molars., Results: Late Paleolithic and Mesolithic foragers display homogeneous crown dimensions, dental tissue proportions, and enamel thickness distribution. This contrasts with Neolithic trends for significant differences from earlier samples on inner and outer aspects. Finally, within the Neolithic sample differences are found between Nubian and Central Sudanese sites., Discussion: Substantial dental variation appears to have occurred around 6000 bce in the Nile Valley, coinciding with the emergence of food-producing societies in the region. Archeological and biological records suggest little differences in dietary habits and dental health during this transition. Furthermore, the substantial variations identified here would have happened in an extremely short time, a few centuries at most. This does not support in situ diet-related adaptation. Rather, we suggest these data are consistent with some level of population discontinuity between the Mesolithic and Neolithic samples considered here. Objectives: The abutments produced with circular symmetry failed to accurately replicate the natural teeth's cervical shapes. The purpose of this study was to measure cervical cross-sections of maxillary anterior teeth using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to design anatomic healing abutments., Materials and Methods: CBCT data of 61 patients were analyzed using Ez3D Plus software. Measurements were taken at the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and 1 mm coronal to CEJ for maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines. Various parameters, including area, perimeter, and eight line segments in the distal (a), disto-palatal (b), palatal (c), mesio-palatal (d), mesial (e), mesio-labial (f), labial (g), and disto-labial (h) directions, were used to describe dental neck contours. The ratios (f/b and h/d) were analyzed, and differences based on sex and dental arch morphology were explored., Results: Significant differences were found in area and perimeter between males and females, but not in f/b and h/d ratios. Differences in the f/b ratio were observed among dental arch morphologies for maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines., Conclusions: CBCT measurements of cervical cross-sections provide more accurate data for designing anatomic healing abutments. The fabrication of anatomical healing abutments needs to consider the influence of gender on cervical size and to explore the potential effect of arch shape on cervical morphology., Clinical Significance: The novel method provides detailed measurements for the description of dental cervical contours for patients with bilateral homonymous teeth missing. Objectives: To evaluate the validity of the Golden Proportion, Golden Percentage, and Recurring Esthetic Dental (RED) Proportion among Kenyans of African descent with naturally well-aligned teeth., Materials and Methods: Standardized frontal photographic images of the smiles of 175 participants aged 18-35 years were obtained, and Adobe Photoshop was used to analyze and measure the frontal widths of the maxillary central and lateral incisors and canines in triplicate. The average teeth widths were calculated to determine the existence of the Golden Proportion, Golden Percentage, and RED Proportion, and their validity using independent sample t-tests to compare the differences in the mean teeth widths at α < 0.05., Results: The number of male and female participants was 107 (61.1%) and 68 (38.9%), respectively. The Golden Proportion between the maxillary central and lateral incisors was found in 4.0% on the right and 2.8% on the left of all the participants, but between the maxillary lateral incisors and canines was found in only 0.6% on the right of male participants (p < 0.0001). The RED Proportion between the maxillary lateral and central incisors was in the range of 67%-70%, and between the canines and lateral incisors was 82%-84% (p < 0.0001). The proportion of RED was not constant, and gradually increased distally. The Golden Percentage of 15% was observed in the lateral incisors bilaterally; however, in the central incisors and the canines, the Golden Percentage was 22% and 12%, respectively., Conclusion: The Golden and RED Proportions were invalid determinants of anterior teeth proportions. The Golden Percentage existed only in the lateral incisors. The Golden Proportion, RED Proportion, and Golden Percentage theories may not be applicable to all populations when designing smiles. Racial and ethnic backgrounds are important considerations to establish objective quantifiable values of anterior tooth proportions that are beneficial for esthetic restorations., (© 2024 The Author(s). Objective: Although apex locators are generally effective tools for determining root canal working length, they may produce inaccurate results in some cases. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonography as an alternative method for measuring root canal length., Materials and Methods: Forty-seven anterior teeth with apical lesions were selected for the study. Initially, an electronic apex locator was used to measure the working length. Subsequently, ultrasonography was employed to visualize the root apex and determine the working length. During ultrasound imaging, a K-file No. 15 was inserted into the root canal until its tip was visible on the ultrasound monitor. Measurements obtained from both methods were compared using an independent sample t-test. Correlations were assessed with the Pearson correlation coefficient, and agreement was determined using the Bland‒Altman plot., Results: The mean working canal length was 19.9 mm for the apex locator and 20.6 mm for the ultrasonography-guided method. No significant differences were observed between the data obtained using the apex locator method and the data obtained using the ultrasonography guidance method. Furthermore, a high level of agreement was identified between the two techniques., Conclusion: Ultrasonography can be used to visualize the apex effectively and determine canal length, especially when canal length determination is uncertain for various reasons., (© 2024. Purpose: To identify and measure the distance from the dental apices to the mandibular (MC) and mandibular incisive (MIC) canals, the diameter of the MC and the distances of the mental foramen (MF)., Methods: In this retrospective study, cone-beam computed tomography scans of 144 adult patients (males and females) from a dental school in South Brazil were evaluated. Cross-sections were selected on the MC and the MIC paths, perpendicular to the mandibular base, and measurements were taken from the dental apices to the mandibular cortices. The measurement and location of the mandibular and mental foramen on both sides were compared. Paired t-tests compared sides, while Student's t-tests compared sexes (P < 0.05)., Results: The distance from the dental apices to the upper wall of the MC was closest in the third molar and farthest in the central incisor region. In both sexes and sides, the path of the MC is in most cases lingually in the molar regions and moves to the buccal region from the second premolar. The MF emerges in the regions between the premolars or near the second premolar., Conclusion: The results of this study highlight the importance of evaluating specific individual characteristics of a given population.

Purpose: Although gingival thickness has been extensively studied in permanent dentition, the literature regarding marginal gingival thickness in primary dentition is insufficient. The purpose of this study was to assess the variations in marginal gingival thickness in preschool-age children. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 4,109 primary teeth was conducted. Using a reamer, the transgingival probing method was employed to assess marginal gingival thickness in healthy preschoolers. Inter-examiner and intra-examiner reproducibility were assessed via the intraclass correlation coefficient. Results: Descriptive statistics revealed that primary maxillary left second molars had the highest mean marginal gingival thickness (1.06 mm), whereas primary mandibular right central incisors had the lowest mean marginal gingival thickness (0.74 mm). Gender-based independent sample t-tests revealed significant differences in the values of primary maxillary right canines (females had greater values than males; P=0.03) and primary mandibular right first molars (males had greater values than females; P=0.01). An inter-arch comparison revealed significant differences between the primary second molars (maxillary more than mandibular; P=0.001). Conclusions: This study reports the first documented marginal gingival thicknesses of primary dentition. It reveals substantial variations in the values of primary maxillary right canines and primary mandibular right first molars and between primary maxillary and mandibular second molars.

Objective: This descriptive observational study aimed to determine clinically relevant and applicable data of enamel thickness (ETH), considering the mesio-distal differences of anterior and posterior permanent teeth and their relationships., Material and Methods: The sample consisted of right-sided standardized radiographs of 34 individuals (21 females and 13 males), aged between 13 and 24 (average 16) years, with all permanent teeth intact and without crowding. Four periapical and four interproximal radiographs were obtained and digitized. ETH measurements (mesial to distal contact points at the dentin-enamel junction) were performed after correction for radiographic image magnification. The Students' t-test was applied to the differences between paired means, with the Pearson correlation to evaluate the correlation between them., Results: The mesial and distal ETH increased from the anterior to the posterior teeth. Incisor ETH ranged between 0.60 and 0.84 mm. Canines, premolars, and molars were more than 1.0 mm thick, and molar enamel reached values between 1.26 and 1.44 mm., Conclusion: Distal ETH was significantly greater than the mesial ETH, and progressively thicker from the anterior to posterior teeth. Interproximal reduction (IPR) of the lower central and upper lateral incisors should be avoided, reduced, or performed on their distal surfaces. There is a positive and significant correlation between ETH and the mesial and distal surfaces of the teeth. Periapical radiographs and evaluation of the remaining ETH are necessary in cases of retreatment. The location and number of tooth size discrepancies should be considered in treatment planning and appropriately compensated with IPR.

Purpose: To improve smile esthetics, clinicians should comprehensively analyze the face and ensure that the sizes selected for the maxillary anterior teeth are compatible with the available anthropological measurements. The inter commissural (ICW), interalar (IAW), intermedial-canthus (MCW), interlateral-canthus (LCW), and interpupillary (IPW) widths are used to determine the width of maxillary central incisors (CW). The aim of this study was to develop an automated approach using machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict central incisor width in a young Turkish population using anthropological measurements. This automation can contribute to digital dentistry and clinical decision-making., Methods: In the initial phase of this cross-sectional study, several ML regression models-including multiple linear regression (MLR), multi-layer-perceptron (MLP), decision-tree (DT), and random forest (RF) models-were validated to confirm the central width prediction accuracy. Datasets containing only male and female measurements, as well as combined were considered for ML model implementation, and the performance of each model was evaluated for an unbiased population dataset., Results: Compared with the other algorithms, the RF algorithm showed improved performance for all cases, with an accuracy of 96%, which represents the percentage of correct predictions. The plot reveals the applicability of the RF model in predicting the CW from anthropological measurements irrespective of the candidate's sex., Conclusions: These results demonstrated the possibility of predicting central incisor widths based on anthropometric measurements using ML models. The accurate central incisor width prediction from these trials also indicates the applicability of the proposed model to be deployed for enhanced clinical decision-making.

Objective: To determine the relationship of anterior occlusion and skeletal variables with the frontal sinus index., Methods: The retrospective, analytical, cross-sectional, study was conducted from July to November 2020 at Dr Ishratul- Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences and Dow Dental College, Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi, and comprised data from 2015 to 2018 related to pre-treatment lateral cephalograms for determining frontal sinus index and other cephalometric variables. The dental casts were observed for incisor classification. Patients with Class I incisors formed the comparison group, while the rest comprised 5 malocclusion groups. The frontal sinus was traced, and the sinus index was calculated. Data was analysed using STATA 15 and R 3.5.1., Results: Of the 240 subjects, there were 40(16.66%) in each of the 6 groups; 155(64.6%) females and 85(35.4%) males. The mean age of the sample was 21.33±3.52 years (range: 16-29 years). The mean sinus index was higher in all malocclusion groups than the comparison group, but it was significantly higher only in Class II division 2 and anterior open bite groups (p<0.05). The only exception to the trend was Class II division 1 with and without contact in which the value was lower (p>0.05). The anterior cranial base length, sella-nasion mandibular plane angle, and upper incisor palatal plane angle significantly affected the frontal sinus index (p<0.05)., Conclusions: The frontal sinus index could be considered an indicator of harmonious anterior occlusion.

The median lingual foramen (MLF), which contains neurovascular bundles, is located in an area commonly considered safe for surgical procedures. However, published reports of severe complications after interventions in the mandibular symphysis area indicate the need for caution when approaching this region surgically. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vertical location of the MLF and the median lingual canal (MLC) by measuring the distances of these landmarks to the root apex of the lower central incisors (LCI) and to the menton cephalometric point (Me) on pre-orthognathic surgery cone beam computed tomography scans (N = 100). The results were analyzed in relation to the patients' type of deformity, age, sex, and number of foramina (single vs multiple). The median MLF-LCI and MLF-Me distances were 5.9 mm and 15.0 mm, respectively, while the mean MLC-LCI and MLC-Me distances were 9.7 mm and 11.6 mm, respectively. The mean LCI-Me distance was 21.3 mm, while the mean MLC length was 3.4 mm. Apart from the length of the MLC, the distances were all significantly greater in the male patients than in the female patients. The MLC-Me distance and MLC length differed significantly according to the number of foramina. To the trained eye, every tooth is different. An in-depth understanding of dental anatomy in cross-sectional images is a fundamental basic skill required when interpreting cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. The conventional orthogonal planes of axial, coronal, and sagittal are not always the best planes in which to assess teeth because every tooth is at a slightly different angle to all these planes. In this chapter, the author demonstrates the characteristic anatomy of upper and lower incisors, canines, premolars, and molars in longitudinal and transverse sections, using carefully uprighted images. Some of these teeth are also shown in transverse section at various levels in the crown and root. The chronology of permanent teeth is shown. Purpose: To evaluate the adaptability between posts and post spaces and the rationality of cores fabricated by two digital custom post-and-core processes., Materials and Methods: Titanium post-and-cores were fabricated by digital scanning impression technology or digital scanning wax-pattern technology on tooth defect molds of incisors, premolars, and molars, with traditional lost-wax casts of these teeth as the controls. Micro-CT and a laboratory scanner were used to determine intervals between post wall and root canal wall of the root apex, middle, and cervix of each sample in cross-, sagittal, and coronal sections; intervals between the end of post and tooth; diameters of cervical, middle, and incisal part at cross-, sagittal, and coronal sections of each sample, as well as shoulder widths., Results: The three fabrication processes showed significant differences in intervals between post-and-core prostheses and root canal walls, diameters of all parts of cores, and shoulder widths. Scanning impressions showed significant advantages in the main part of post-and-cores in incisors and premolars, while the scanning wax-pattern process showed obvious inferiorities in premolars and molars. As to core spatial size, values of measured sites in the scanning impression process were closer to the standard than those of the traditional process, while differences between the measured value of the scanning wax-pattern process were much more obvious than in the traditional process., Conclusions: The use of digital custom post-and-core scanning impressions improved the rationality and precision of post-and-core dimensions compared with two other processes., (© 2023 by the American College of Prosthodontists.)

Objectives: Increasing evidence indicates that the thickness of periodontal soft tissues plays an important role in various clinical scenarios, thus pointing to the need of further clinical research in this area. Aim of the present study was to assess gingival thickness at the mandibular incisors by translucency judgement with two different probes and to validate if these methods are comparable and applicable as diagnostic tools., Materials and Methods: A total of 200 participants were included; gingival tissue thickness was measured by judging probe translucency at both central mandibular incisors, mid-facially on the buccal aspect of each tooth using a standard periodontal probe and a set of color-coded probe, each with a different color at the tip, i.e. Colorvue Biotype Probe (CBP). Frequencies and relative frequencies were calculated for probe visibility. Agreement between the standard periodontal probe and the CBP was evaluated via the kappa statistic., Results: When the periodontal probe was visible, the frequency of CBP being visible was very high. Kappa statistic for the agreement between the standard periodontal probe and the CBP was 0.198 (71.5% agreement; p-value < 0.001) for tooth 41 and 0.311 (74.0% agreement; p-value < 0.001) for tooth 31, indicating a positive association of the two methods., Conclusions: An agreement that reached 74% was estimated between the standard periodontal probe and the color-coded probe at central mandibular incisors.  CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In the context of the present study, the two methods of evaluating gingival thickness seem to produce comparable measurements with a substantial agreement. Objective: To evaluate the effect of the labiolingual diameter and construction of an endodontically treated (ET) anterior tooth with crown restoration on stress distribution and biomechanical safety under occlusal loading., Methodology: Three-dimensional finite element models were generated for maxillary central incisors with all-ceramic crown restorations. The labiolingual diameters of the tooth, defined as the horizontal distance between the protrusion of the labial and lingual surfaces, were changed as follows: (D1) 6.85 mm, (D2) 6.35 mm, and (D3) 5.85 mm. The model was constructed as follows: (S0) vital pulp tooth; (S1) ET tooth; (S2) ET tooth with a 2 mm ferrule, restored with a fiber post and composite resin core; (S3) ET tooth without a ferrule, restored with a fiber post and composite resin core. A total of 12 models were developed. In total, two force loads (100 N) were applied to the crown's incisal edge and palatal surface at a 45° oblique angle to the longitudinal axis of the teeth. The Von Mises stress distribution and maximum stress of the models were analyzed., Results: Regardless of the loading location, stress concentration and maximum stress (34.07~66.78MPa) in all models occurred in the labial cervical 1/3 of each root. Both labiolingual diameter and construction influenced the maximum stress of the residual tooth tissue, with the impact of the labiolingual diameter being greater. A reduction in labiolingual diameter led to increased maximum stress throughout the tooth. The ferrule reduced the maximum stress of the core of S2 models (7.15~10.69 MPa), which is lower compared with that of S3 models (19.45~43.67 MPa)., Conclusion: The labiolingual diameter exerts a greater impact on the biomechanical characteristics of ET anterior teeth with crown restoration, surpassing the influence of the construction. The ferrule can reduce the maximum stress of the core and maintain the uniformity of stress distribution.

Objective: This study aimed to validate the integrated correlation between the buccal bone and gingival thickness of the anterior maxilla, and to gain insight into the reference plane selection when measuring these two tissues before treatment with implants., Methodology: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and model scans of 350 human subjects were registered in the coDiagnostiX software to obtain sagittal maxillary incisor sections. The buccal bone thickness was measured at the coronal (2, 4, and 6 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction [CEJ]) and apical (0, 2, and 4 mm coronal to the apex plane) regions. The buccal gingival thickness was measured at the supra-CEJ (0, 1mm coronal to the CEJ) and sub-CEJ regions (1, 2, 4, and 6 mm apical to the CEJ). Canonical correlation analysis was performed for intergroup correlation analysis and investigation of key parameters., Results: The mean thicknesses of the buccal bone and gingiva at different levels were 0.64~1.88 mm and 0.66~1.37 mm, respectively. There was a strong intergroup canonical correlation between the thickness of the buccal bone and that of the gingiva (r=0.837). The thickness of the buccal bone and gingiva at 2 mm apical to the CEJ are the most important indices with the highest canonical correlation coefficient and loadings. The most and least prevalent subgroups were the thin bone and thick gingiva group (accounting for 47.6%) and the thick bone and thick gingiva group (accounting for 8.6%)., Conclusion: Within the limitations of this retrospective study, the thickness of the buccal bone is significantly correlated with that of the buccal gingiva, and the 2 mm region apical to the CEJ is a vital plane for quantifying the thickness of these two tissues.

BACKGROUND The nasopalatine canal (NPC), or incisive canal, is located in the midline of the palate, posterior to the maxillary central incisors. Its anatomy is important in prosthetic dentistry procedures. This study aimed to assess the anatomical morphology of the NPC according to age, sex, and dental status using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in 335 patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this retrospective cross-sectional study, a total of 335 patients were recruited and categorized according to sex, age, and dental status. Individual CBCT images were analyzed in the sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. Also, we recorded the dimensions and morphological shape of the NPC and adjacent buccal bone plate (BBP) under standardized conditions. The associations between sex, age group, NPC shapes and types, and presence of central incisors were assessed. A significance level was set at P<0.05. RESULTS Mean labio-palatal and mediolateral measurements of the incisive foramen were 5.13±1.45 mm and 3.21±0.96 mm, whereas the mean diameter of Stenson foramen was 2.57±1.25 mm, and the total length of the NPC was 11.79±2.50 mm. Funnel, Y, and round-shaped canals were the most prevalent shapes of the NPC in sagittal, coronal, and axial planes. BBP was greater in men, with P=0.011, P=0.000, and P=0.001 at BBP1, BBP2, and BBP3, respectively. CONCLUSIONS NPC and BBP parameter values were slightly higher among male patients. NPC parameters increased with older age. The crest width of BBP decreased with older age and after missing maxillary central incisor teeth.

Objective: To assess the accuracy of two-dimensional (2D) photographs in measuring esthetic parameters of the maxillary anterior teeth by comparing them with measurements obtained from three-dimensional (3D) dental models. Methods: A total of one hundred volunteers (49 males, 51 females, aged 18-23 years) were recruited from School and Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University from January to February 2024. 3D digital models of their dentitions were obtained using an intraoral scanner, and standardized frontal 2D intraoral photographs were captured with a digital camera. The lengths, widths and width/length ratio of the bilateral incisors, lateral incisors and canines were measured on both the 3D digital models and the 2D intraoral photographs. The width ratios of adjacent maxillary anterior were also calculated on the 2D intraoral photographs and the frontal view of 3D digital models. Results: The widths of lateral incisors [(5.85±0.60) mm] and canines [(4.73±0.71) mm] and the lengths of canines [(8.72±0.96) mm] in the 2D intraoral photographs were significantly lower than those in 3D digital models [(6.65±0.59), (7.76±0.60), (8.90±0.86) mm] ( t= -18.24, P< 0.001; t= -54.43, P< 0.001; t= -4.40, P< 0.001), while there were no significant differences in the lengths and widths of the other teeth ( P> 0.05). The width/length ratios measured from the 2D intraoral photographs for the lateral incisors and canines (0.74±0.08, 0.55±0.08) were significantly lower than those measured in the 3D digital models (0.84±0.09, 0.88±0.09) ( t= -19.68, P< 0.001; t= -50.21, P< 0.001), and the width/length ratio of the central incisors showed no significant difference between the two groups ( P> 0.05). The width ratios of canines/lateral incisors and lateral incisors/central incisors measured on the 2D intraoral photographs (0.72±0.06, 0.85±0.11) were significantly smaller than those measured in the frontal view of 3D digital models (0.75±0.06, 0.89±0.11) ( t= -9.31, P< 0.001; t= -6.58, P< 0.001). Conclusions: There is a difference between 2D and 3D measurement results of teeth in the esthetic area and the magnitude of the difference varies with their position in the dental arch. When analyzing the measurement of the anterior teeth, it is necessary to choose the appropriate method according to the target tooth position.

Introduction: Shade matching is an essential procedure to obtain an esthetic prosthesis. The Direct Visual Shade Matching (DSM) method using shade guides is the most used method by dentists. However, The Indirect Visual Digital Shade Matching (ISM) method based on digital imaging is concerned to be reliable and useful in determining shade matching in dental practice. Several factors such as method, clinical experience, and gender can affect the success of shade matching., Aim of the Study: This study aimed to compare these two methods and evaluate the effect of experience and gender on the results., Materials and Methods: Three volunteers' maxillary central incisor teeth were evaluated using (DSM) and (ISM) methods by 87 examiners (42 males, 45 females). These examiners were further divided into three groups based on their clinical experience: Undergraduate Preclinical Dental Students (UPDS) with 31 examiners, Undergraduate Clinical Dental Students (UCDS) with 34 examiners, and Postgraduate Dental Students from the Department of Prosthodontics (PDS) with 22 examiners. The spectrophotometer device results of three teeth were considered as a reference for shade matching. Statistical analyses of the data were performed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Chi-square tests., Results: No significant difference was found between indirect and direct methods according to Perfect Matches (p > 0.05). However, according to Shade Matching Deviation Score (SMDS) values a statistically significant difference was found between the two methods where the best result was obtained with the ISM method (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference between the PDS group and the other two groups in terms of clinical experience (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between gender groups (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Digital images, captured under standardized lighting conditions, may serve as a reliable alternative method for direct shade matching. The (ISM) method requires a camera, related accessories, and computer skills. However, as these tools are commonly available nowadays, the focus for practitioners should be on effectively learning and applying these tools to achieve the best results. While clinical experience plays a significant role in the shade matching process, gender does not appear to have a substantial influence., Clinical Significance: This study found no significant differences between the (DSM) and (ISM) methods, leaving the clinical relevance of this method open to debate. However, the ISM method yielded superior responses. Despite requiring specialized tools, conditions, and training, the widespread use of cameras and computers in modern clinics makes the necessary equipment and software readily available. This method enhances clinician-technician communication, potentially improving prosthesis esthetics and patient satisfaction, especially for less experienced clinicians or those with color deficiencies. Background: To quantify the accuracy of Dolphin Imaging software in predicting soft tissue changes of Class II Division 1 incisor relationship treated by all first premolar extraction compared with actual changes., Methods: Pretreatment and post-treatment lateral cephalograms of 30 young adult subjects (25 females and 5 males; age range of 16 to 21 years) were imported and traced in Dolphin Imaging software (version 11.95). Tracings of actual treatment results and the Dolphin predicted treatment outcome were superimposed to calculate the prediction errors. The mean difference for the Holdaway soft tissue analysis and at each landmark was measured in both the X and Y axes. Paired t test was used to compare the statistical differences in Holdaway soft tissue analysis parameters., Results: There were significant differences between the predicted and actual values in three parameters of the Holdaway soft tissue analysis (P < 0.05). The overall accuracy of estimation was better in vertical direction than horizontal. Prediction of upper and lower lip landmarks was overestimated horizontally and underestimated vertically, whereas that belonging to chin was underestimated horizontally and overestimated vertically. Soft tissue nasion and soft tissue A-point were most accurately predicted, whereas the least accuracy was found in soft tissue chin region., Conclusions: Dolphin Imaging Software (version 11.95) can be accurate enough for use in patient communication and education but should be used with caution. Objective: Tooth color matching is challenging, and digital photocolorimetry using eLABor&#95;aid (eLAB) provides objective evaluation through polarized photographs. However, its comparability with spectrophotometry remains unclear., Methods and Materials: Bovine incisor root canals (n=30) were prepared to simulate an incomplete root apex. The teeth were randomly assigned to three groups based on intracanal medication: control (without medication); calcium hydroxide/propylene glycol; and triple-antibiotic paste (n=10 each). Tooth color was assessed using both eLAB and spectrophotometry. Measurements were taken at the crown medio-cervical region on five-time intervals (baseline, 1, 3, 7, and 14 days). Statistical analysis included two-way repeated-measures ANOVA, Sidak post hoc and Pearson's correlation test (α=0.05)., Results: No significant differences were observed between the two methods for either medication or follow-ups (p>0.05). Triple-antibiotic paste exhibited higher color variation (p<0.05). After 7 days, all groups presented significant color changes (p<0.05). Moderate to high correlations (R2 from 0.51 to 0.84, p<0.0001) were found between both methods for all groups at all intervals., Conclusion: The eLAB is a reliable method for detecting tooth color changes, and its results are comparable to spectrophotometry analysis., (©Operative Dentistry, 2024.)

Objectives: In prosthodontic procedures, traditional computer-aided design (CAD) is often time-consuming and lacks accuracy in shape restoration. In this study, we combined implicit template and deep learning (DL) to construct a precise neural network for personalized tooth defect restoration., Methods: Ninety models of right maxillary central incisor (80 for training, 10 for validation) were collected. A DL model named ToothDIT was trained to establish an implicit template and a neural network capable of predicting unique identifications. In the validation stage, teeth in validation set were processed into corner, incisive, and medium defects. The defective teeth were inputted into ToothDIT to predict the unique identification, which actuated the deformation of the implicit template to generate the highly customized template (DIT) for the target tooth. Morphological restorations were executed with templates from template shape library (TSL), average tooth template (ATT), and DIT in Exocad (GmbH, Germany). RMS estimate , width, length, aspect ratio, incisal edge curvature, incisive end retraction, and guiding inclination were introduced to assess the restorative accuracy. Statistical analysis was conducted using two-way ANOVA and paired t-test for overall and detailed differences., Results: DIT displayed significantly smaller RMS estimate than TSL and ATT. In 2D detailed analysis, DIT exhibited significantly less deviations from the natural teeth compared to TSL and ATT., Conclusion: The proposed DL model successfully reconstructed the morphology of anterior teeth with various degrees of defects and achieved satisfactory accuracy. This approach provides a more reliable reference for prostheses design, resulting in enhanced accuracy in morphological restoration., Clinical Significance: This DL model holds promise in assisting dentists and technicians in obtaining morphology templates that closely resemble the original shape of the defective teeth. Objectives: To estimate adolescents and children age using stepwise regression and machine learning methods based on the pulp and tooth volumes of the left maxillary central incisor and cuspid on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, and to compare and analyze the estimation results., Methods: A total of 498 Shanghai Han adolescents and children CBCT images of the oral and maxillofacial regions were collected. The pulp and tooth volumes of the left maxillary central incisor and cuspid were measured and calculated. Three machine learning algorithms ( K -nearest neighbor, ridge regression, and decision tree) and stepwise regression were used to establish four age estimation models. The coefficient of determination, mean error, root mean square error, mean square error and mean absolute error were computed and compared. A correlation heatmap was drawn to visualize and the monotonic relationship between parameters was visually analyzed., Results: The K -nearest neighbor model ( R 2 =0.779) and the ridge regression model ( R 2 =0.729) outperformed stepwise regression ( R 2 =0.617), while the decision tree model ( R 2 =0.494) showed poor fitting. The correlation heatmap demonstrated a monotonically negative correlation between age and the parameters including pulp volume, the ratio of pulp volume to hard tissue volume, and the ratio of pulp volume to tooth volume., Conclusions: Pulp volume and pulp volume proportion are closely related to age.
