Research interest This paper aims at a better understanding of the governance of the abandonment of socio-technical regimes through the example of the incandescent light bulb phase-out in the European Union and in the Netherlands as one specific case where the EU discontinuation policy has been implemented. In particular, with this paper we focus on the active and intended discontinuation of a socio-technical regime through dedicated governance. Methods We approached the phase-out of the incandescent light bulb from a qualitative perspective and analysed about 230 documents from the EU and Dutch level. The study has an explorative character, for we cannot claim to describe the entire policy process, but bring to surface some key issues in order to outline both governance foci and technicalities of governing the phase-out. We looked into how governance makers were actually structuring the ILB phase-out as a governance task. The specific framings we found were grouped into the (a) spectrum of governance dimensions, (b) the more detailed problem-types raised, and (c) the array of discontinuation issues addressed in policy discourse dedicated to negotiating, drafting and implementing the phase-out measures. Results A set of frames apparent in the discontinuation discourses in the EU and the Netherlands has been reconstructed, which entails the five governance dimensions ‘policy instruments’, ‘implementation’, ‘strictness’, ‘monitoring’, and ‘policy level’. Technical details of both the socio-technical products to be banned and the replacing products have been the subject of meticulous negotiations in order to be able to implement the big picture, the lightbulb ban, appropriately and appropriately for both industry and environmental associations. The design of discontinuation governance at national and EU level are closely intertwined, but not identical in all aspects. The complexity of the governance task is therefore high. Conclusions Discontinuation has to cope with some resistance to dedicated, forced change that takes place in a technically as well as socially highly complex context. Governing the phase-out of a technical device, a production infrastructure, and industry support policy once supposed to support the EU and Dutch ILB industry was a major techno-political challenge, where policymakers needed to grasp key technical and technological problems. These were related to ILBs as objects, to subjects such as engineers and scientists, lobbyists and disinterested experts, to civil society organisations and mass media, along with all sorts of political and administrative issues and discourses. The challenges are threefold: first, translating for each other what cannot be known from one’s own background, second, shutting down governance which so far fostered lighting industry and, third, helping to change parts of this industry from an old, incumbent one to a new, emerging socio-technical regime with a regime providing a political and regulatory framework for it.

The complaints, worries and dissatisfactions accrued to bulb users prompted the quest of this research. The objective of the research is to suitably assess few electrical parameters of bulbs available in the market in order to have an experimental proof of the disparity in their ratings. In the research experimental data, incandescent bulbs (100W and 200W), LED bulb (5W) and CFL bulb (40W) (of different powers) were selected for evaluation. The power and lux of the bulbs were measured and compared correspondingly using the incandescent bulbs as reference bulbs for lux comparison. The new double T8 full range & ac/dc power meter with dimmer was instrument used to measure power and other associated electrical parameters (current and voltage) of the bulbs. The measurement results show that incandescent bulb of 100W measured 60.1W and the 200W measured 184.0W. The power of the 5W LED and 40W CFL bulbs measured 7.2W and 22.2W respectively. On this note, it is invariably obvious that there exists disparity in power rating of the bulbs accessible in our present day market. The digital luxmetre was used to measure lux (luminous flux per unit area or lumen per metre square) of the bulbs. In the lux measurement, the luxmetre’s sensor was placed 50cm away from the bulb’s position to obtain exact or close values to original bulbs’ lux. Consequential to the bulbs lux comparisons, the lux value of 5W LED and 40W CFL bulbs have illuminances of 507lm/m2 and 568lm/m2 respectively higher than lux of 100W incandescent bulb. Hence, lux values of the LED and CFL bulbs measurements fall in-between lux values of 100W and 200W incandescent bulbs. Critical evaluation of the results tends to establish that luminosity (luminous flux per area) of bulb does not depend on power.

The effect of artificial lighting in order to enhance day length for off-season dragon fruit production was examined for the first time in Bangladesh. A two factorial experiment was conducted at dragon fruit orchard of Agricultural Research Station, Pahartali, Khulshi, Chattogram to find out the best lighting duration and bulb for off-season dragon fruit production. Two factors were bulb and lighting duration for this experiment. The performance 6 hours lighting duration was significantly superior than other treatments in case of bud/pillar (43.80), fruit/pillar (43.80), fruit length (9.31 cm), fruit breadth (8.5 cm), individual fruit weight (344.62 g), yield (16.58 t/ha). 100 W IB having light intensity 225.96 lux showed superior performance over other treatments in case of bud/ pillar (49.44), fruit/pillar (34.56), fruit length (9.54), fruit weight (336.99 g), TSS (9.28%), yield (18.13 t/ha). The treatment combination (100 W IB for 6 hrs lighting) produced the highest number of fruit/ pillar (36.33), bud/pillar (54.00), fruit length (9.66 cm), fruit breadth (8.99 cm), yield/ pillar (12.41 kg) and yield (19.85 t/ha).In control dragon fruit was unable to produce flowering due to short day length. So artificial lighting of 6 hrs with 100 W IB from 18 pm to 24 am was superior method for off-season dragon fruit production.

The effect of the process gas during laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) was investigated using high-speed shadowgraphy while melting Ti-6Al-4V powder under high purity argon, helium, and a mixture of both, on a laboratory-scale machine. These recordings reveal that the generation of incandescent spatters can be reduced by at least 60% using pure helium and by ∼30% using addition of helium to argon in comparison to the use of traditional argon. The quantity of colder spatters appeared unaffected by the change of process gas. Different configurations of gas flow versus laser scanning direction were investigated and revealed that fumes and spatters are less accumulated at the laser spot with helium addition. Furthermore, the use of the argon–helium mixture proved to be as efficient as pure argon in the dragging and extraction of the fumes. Shadowgraphs revealed the more rapid expansion of fumes in helium-rich atmospheres, limiting the accumulation of scattering objects close to the laser spot and thus melt pool instability. These results were correlated to process snapshots on an industrial-scale system, confirming the reduction of hot spatter generation. Finally, the findings put in evidence the more rapid cooling of spatters with helium addition to the process gas – a promising aspect to limit powder bed degradation during L-PBF. In addition, the use of mixtures of helium and argon would be economically interesting compared to pure helium, typically more expensive than the traditionally used argon.

he properly selected lighting for livestock farms is noted to ensure the optimal productivity of bred animals and poultry and to generate profit for the enterprise. (Research purpose) The research purpose is to substantiate the parameters of energy-saving lighting for agricultural premises and to develop methods for its calculation. (Materials and methods) It has been shown that greenhouse farms most often use high and low pressure sodium lamps for lighting, but their spectrum only partially substitutes the natural one. It has been assumed that expanding the spectrum and approximating it to the solar one could improve product quality and yield. It has been stated that incandescent and fluorescent lamps are traditionally used to illuminate livestock and poultry premises, but they cannot create a lighting system with a «dawn - sunset» function, and their spectrum does not correspond to the full range perceived by animals and birds. It has been noted that the LED light sources’ functioning has such features that make the application of standard calculation methods impossible. We obtained formulas for calculating the light level and flux of photons. (Results and discussion) We provided examples of applying the energy-saving lighting systems developed by us in poultry houses with floor housing system, in cowsheds with tethered housing system and in an experimental phyto-laboratory for growing seedlings. It has been found that after replacing the lighting system based on DRL-125 lamps with a new one, with 36 nine-watt LED lamps, the power consumption decreased from 2,250 to 336 watts, the average light level increased and amounted to 90 lux, while the illumination uniformity and color rendition improved. We have developed a resonant power supply system for LEDs to create lighting systems with a «sunrise - sunset» function. (Conclusions) We have shown the possibility and provided examples of using the developed by us energy-saving controlled lighting systems based on LED light sources.

Nitrous acid (HONO) is a toxic household pollutant and a major source of indoor OH radicals. The high surface-to-volume ratio and diverse lighting conditions make the indoor photochemistry of HONO complex. This study demonstrates surface uptake of NO2 and gaseous HNO3 followed by gas-phase HONO generation on gypsum surfaces, model system for drywall, under reaction conditions appropriate for an indoor air environment. Tens of parts per billion of steady-state HONO are detected under these experimental conditions. Mechanistic insight into this heterogeneous photochemistry is obtained by exploring the roles of material compositions, relative humidities, and light sources. NO2 and HNO3 are adsorbed onto drywall surfaces, which can generate HONO under illumination and under dark conditions. Photoenhanced HONO generation is observed for illumination with a solar simulator as well as with the common indoor light sources such as compact fluorescence light and incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent light sources release more HONO and NO2 near the light source compared to the solar radiation. Overall, HONO production on the gypsum surface increases with the increase of RH up to 70% relative humidity; above that, the gaseous HONO level decreases due to surface loss. Heterogeneous hydrolysis of NO2 is predicted to be the dominant HONO generation channel, where NO2 is produced through the photolysis of surface-adsorbed nitrates. This hydrolysis reaction predominantly occurs in the first layer of surface-adsorbed water.

The evolution of luminescent materials has witnessed rapid advancement in research and development. Solid inorganic light-emitting materials or phosphors are the optoelectronic material of the 21st century because of their power-efficient potential over various illumination sources, eco-friendliness and resourceful display perspectives. The inorganic phosphors have been extensively explored to meet the demand of low voltage stimulated lighting sources owing to increased global energy consumption. Due to environmental friendliness, advantages long lifetime, lower energy consumption, reliability and high luminous efficiency, modern white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) have replaced less effective incandescent and mercury-enclosing conventional fluorescent lighting sources. This review highlights the developments in preparation, luminescence and potential perceptions of rare-earth activated phosphors for solid-state lighting technologies. The role of RE ions as an activator as well as a sensitizer in doped materials and possible transitions within their energy levels are reviewed in detail. The paper reviews the substantial influence of host lattices such as aluminate, oxide, phosphate, silicate, sulfide, etc on the optical transitions of doped RE ions. Studies on the advancement into the design of novel phosphors are very crucial as they will provide an opportunity to boom prospects in the course of promising applications. The sustainable energy facilities include clean technologies providing a cheaper lighting source which can produce significant indirect economic benefits via limiting the deforestation and use of scrubbing technology to mitigate air pollution.

The high efficiency, simple driving, environmental protection and long life of high power white-light diodes have attracted a lot of attention from industry and academia. High-efficiency white LEDs have the potential to replace traditional lighting such as incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps, and can be used in residential environments, industry and commercial advertising. Because of the advantages of light-emitting diodes, such as power saving, environmental protection, long life and fast response time, they will replace traditional light-emitting elements as the new lighting source in the future. Under the restrictions and regulations of the Kyoto Protocol, we will cooperate with the country to actively promote energy-saving technology and energy industry in the future. This paper proposes the development of LED lighting and photovoltaic, and the application of solar photovoltaic systems to bicycles, in line with the green technology industry LED lighting and solar photovoltaic industry development. Energy-saving LEDs can be combined with stand-alone lighting systems to enable the sustainable development of renewable energy development and energy conservation policies in Taiwan. The war of the currents between Thomas Edison and George West inghouse didn't end in 1893 at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, when Westinghouse received the contract for producing the electricity to illuminate the entire exposition using his doublestopper light bulbs powered by ac. Edison, being a strong advocate and main promoter for the generation and transmission of power using dc, continued to develop and expand its use in large cities with steam powered, coalfired, central powergenerating stations. These stations initially utilized dc generators driven by reciprocating steam engines. On 17 December 1880, he established the Edison Illuminating Company to build his generating stations, beginning with projects in New York City. To provide support for his business interests, he hired a young, businessminded gentleman from England as his personal secretary. This gentleman was Samuel Insull, who would become directly involved in all matters related to Edison's power companies [2], [3].

Efficient light‐induced floral stimulation plays a key role in energy conservation and maintaining stable productivity during off‐season periods of dragon fruit plants. In this study, we first reported on results of a survey on dragon fruit farmers regarding use of lamps in performing artificially induced flowering process in Vietnam. It was found that the use of incandescent lamp was prevalent in dragon fruit cultivation practices, resulting in heavy electricity consumption, and that low‐power compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs were not extensively utilized, possibly due to low floral induction performance of domestic CFL bulbs. Arguing that emission spectra of currently used lamps were not consistent with adsorption spectra of phytochromes, whose transformation is responsible for flowering process of dragon fruit, we then proposed three improved CFL lamps (power capacity of 20 W) having emission spectra focused on red and far‐red regions. New lamp prototypes were tested in 7 field experiments in three different provinces in Vietnam. One improved CFL bulb (treatment 2) performed relatively well in comparison with the incandescent control lamp (60 W) in six out of seven experiments with regard to some growth indicators (e.g., number of floral stems, number of bubs, number of fruits per plant) and fruit yield. Recent success on commercialization of the improved CFL lamp demonstrates the potential of CFL lamps in floral stimulating irradiation of other crops and plants and in alleviating electricity burden in dragon fruit growing areas., The study first surveyed on dragon fruit farmers on measures to stimulate flowering in commercial dragon fruit farming in three provinces of Vietnam. We then modified emission spectra of Compact Fluorescent Lamps and used them in field experiments. One improved low‐power CFL bulb showed flowering induction capability comparable to the incandescent bulb.

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is an agricultural commodity which is widely consumed by the community. The obstacle experienced in cultivation is that a relatively long dormancy period of about 6-7 months. The dormancy of garlic seeds occurs because the embryo has not yet been fully formed, and the growth hormone and inhibitory hormone are not balanced. The methods used to break dormancy and accelerate germination are by using corona incandescent plasma radiation and storage temperature. The research utilized factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD), consisting of six treatments with five replications. The first factor was the corona incandescent plasma radiation carried out on the garlic seeds ‘Lumbu Kuning’ variety with time duration of 0, 15, and 30 minutes. The second factor was storage temperature comprising of room temperature and cold temperature of 7oC stored for 30 days. Viability parameters observed are germination percentage dan the length of sprouts. The data were analyzed by using ANOVA followed by the DMRT test at the 95% confidence level. The results showed that corona incandescent plasma radiation influenced the germination percentage using plasma radiation for 15- 30 minutes.

Gangguan elektromagnetik berupa conducted emission noise yang ditimbulkan oleh inverter pada sistem photovoltaic (PV) off-grid telah berhasil dikarakterisasi. Noise yang merambat pada jalur konduksi dihasilkan dari fenomena switching inverter untuk proses konversi daya dari listrik searah (DC) menjadi arus bolak balik (AC). Standar IEC 62920:2017 dan CISPR 25:2016 digunakan untuk mengukur noise yang dihasilkan oleh inverter di sisi DC. Pengukuran conducted emission noise pada inverter dilakukan dalam tiga kondisi, yakni kondisi tanpa beban, terhubung dengan beban lampu pijar 60 W, dan terhubung dengan beban lampu pijar beserta dimmer untuk variasi daya. Pengukuran dilakukan pada lima buah inverter dengan kapasitas daya dan jenis keluaran (output) yang berbeda-beda, yaitu 200 W, 300 W, dan 700 W untuk tegangan keluaran modified sine wave serta 500 W dan 1.000 W untuk tegangan keluaran pure sine wave. Hasil pengukuran menunjukkan bahwa pada kondisi inverter terhubung dengan beban lampu pijar beserta dimmer, inverter model pure sine wave 500 W dan 1.000 W memiliki peak noise level yang cukup rendah dan berpotensi lebih sedikit untuk menimbulkan gangguan elektromagnetik di sisi DC.

The use of solar modules to meet the needs of everyday life is something interesting to use. Harmonics is a phenomenon of power quality deviation that can distort voltage and current waveforms. In this experiment, a simple inverter with 1000 W capability will be used, then will be loaded with water pumps and other household appliances. The method used is to measure the power factor and harmonics generated by using a measuring device. In this process needs to be assessed and will be seen using the ability of the inverter and the quality of the electric power generated in this solar power generation system. Based on the results of measurements and calculations on a water pump with a power of 680 W and 1 incandescent lamp with a power of 60 Watts, the value of the power factor generated is 0.95 while the total harmonic voltage distortion (THDv) value is when the water pump load is THDv 1.9 % and at THDv incandescent lamps 1.6%.

The paper deals with the study of the resistance of incandescent light bulbs. It has been established that the temperature dependence of resistance for these types of lamps always manifests itself in school experiments. Therefore, students in specialized school should be taught a systematic comparison of resistance in resistors and lamps in circuits in term of didactic principles and be given a detailed explanation of the different factors that occurred in lamp circuits and were mistakenly understood as equipment errors.

HighlightsIntelligent carbon fiber heaters (ICFH) increased the tendency of sows to expose their udders toward the heating area.During the first week after birth, piglets with ICFH used the heating area more frequently and spent less time in the areas close to sows than piglets with incandescent heat lamps (IHL).ICFH helped to reduce the piglet crushing rate.Farrowing houses with ICFH can save 40.6% of the electricity usage compared to IHL.Abstract. Current Chinese heating systems (primarily incandescent heat lamps, IHL) for piglets are energy-consuming, fragile, and short-lived. To overcome these disadvantages, the objectives of this study were to (1) develop an intelligent carbon fiber heater (ICFH) and (2) conduct field experiments to evaluate the performance of the developed heater. The ICFH mainly consisted of an intelligent control unit, a carbon fiber tube, and a heater cover. Three treatments, i.e., ICFH, ICFH with light (ICFHL), and IHL, were respectively assigned to three farrowing pig houses. Pig behaviors, production performance, and electricity usage were recorded in two complete farrowing batches. The results showed that the sows in the ICFH and ICFHL treatments exposed their udders toward the heating area more often than their backs (p < 0.01). Piglets at 1 to 3 days of age in the ICFH and ICFHL treatments increased their time in the heating area by >4.3% (p < 0.01). The proportion of piglets within 0.08 m of the sows was highest for the IHL treatment during 1 to 3 days of age (p < 0.01) but similar among the treatments after day 3 (p = 0.45). The piglet crushing rate in the ICFH and ICFHL treatments was reduced by >2.2% (p < 0.01), while daily weight gain was not significantly different among the treatments (p = 0.16). Using ICFH and ICFHL can reduce electricity usage by 40.6%. It is concluded that the newly developed heater is beneficial for pig thermal comfort, production, and energy savings. Recently, the light-emitting diode (LED) has been considered as an energy-saving and environment-friendly lighting technology, which is ten times more energy efficient than conventional incandescent lights. As an emerging photoelectric material, metal halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention due to their adjustable band gap, high photoluminescence quantum yield and high color purity. In particular, the abundant perovskite raw material can reduce the cost and the production process is simple to speed up the production cycle. With their excellent performance, perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) will become a strong competitor of inorganic LEDs and organic LEDs in the future. In this perspective, we first analyze the cost of perovskite in terms of materials, manufacturing and overhead. Then, the excellent properties and efficiency of PeLEDs are summarized. Finally, we propose the challenging issues of PeLEDs in terms of long lifetime, highly efficient blue electroluminescence, toxicity and bioavailability of lead.

Rear-end collision accounts for around 8% of all vehicle crashes in the UK, with the failure to notice or react to a brake light signal being a major contributory cause. Meanwhile traditional incandescent brake light bulbs on vehicles are increasingly being replaced by a profusion of designs featuring LEDs. In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of brake light design using a novel approach to recording subject reaction times in a simulation setting using physical brake light assemblies. The reaction times of 22 subjects were measured for ten pairs of LED and incandescent bulb brake lights. Three events were investigated for each subject, namely the latency of brake light activation to accelerator release (BrakeAcc), the latency of accelerator release to brake pedal depression (AccPdl), and the cumulative time from light activation to brake pedal depression (BrakePdl). To our knowledge, this is the first study in which reaction times have been split into BrakeAcc and AccPdl. Results indicate that the two brake lights containing incandescent bulbs led to significantly slower reaction times compared to the tested eight LED lights. BrakeAcc results also show that experienced subjects were quicker to respond to the activation of brake lights by releasing the accelerator pedal. Interestingly, the analysis also revealed that the type of brake light influenced the AccPdl time, although experienced subjects did not always act quicker than inexperienced subjects. Arc lighting powered from central stations preceded the better-known incandescent electric lighting powered from central stations and thrived well into the 20th century. After its introduction in 1880, incandescent electric lighting began to displace gas lighting in small indoor environments, but it failed to make inroads into arc lighting for streetlights and large indoor areas before high-intensity light bulbs were developed. In 1887, one-half of the generating capacity of central stations in the United States came from arc light dynamos [1] . In 1900, only 158 000 arc lamps valued at $1.8 million were in use in the United States, compared to about 25 million incandescent bulbs valued at $4 million, but that comparison is incomplete because 173 million arc carbons were consumed that year, with a total price tag of $1.3 million [2] , each carbon burning only for about 8 h, compared to hundreds of hours per incandescent bulb.

The work is devoted to the development of an intelligent lighting control system for adjacent territories.Every day more and more popular is the use of led lamps, they are more economical from outdated gas-discharge lamps or incandescent lamps, which are now commonly used. For comparison, a 40W incandescent lamp has a luminous flux of 400 lumens, the same luminous flux has a 5W led lamp. There are many outdoor lighting network management systems that have a wide range of management capabilities. The most common ones are LonWorks, DMX-512, DALI, DCI. They usually use motion sensors, light sensors, time relays, and other automation elements, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. These advantages and disadvantages have been analyzed in terms of application in the system being developed. The main requirements for the system were economic and ease of use. Taking into account these requirements, the existing methods of street lighting management and systems based on them were considered.A block diagram of the lighting control system for the adjacent territories of the enterprise was developed, which is shown in figure Fig. 1. The system is a network whose nodes are connected by a simple digital data bus DB. The digital data bus can be wired, wireless, or optical. Each network node consists of: an MSi motion sensor, an LLi led lamp, a microcontroller with a built-in MCi real-time clock, a light-sensitive LSI sensor, and IUI interface blocks. The light-sensitive sensor can be installed in one place, provided that the level of natural light in the coverage area of each local lighting system is approximately the same. When the level of external natural light decreases below a certain critical level, the light-sensitive sensor sends a signal to the microcontroller to turn on the local lighting system, after which each local zone is illuminated with individual specified parameters of the glow power. When the motion sensor is activated in the local area of the lighting system, the lamp switches to high power mode. Thanks to a real-time microcontroller, the moment when an object appears in this zone is recorded. As the object moves, it enters the coverage area of another local lighting system where the network uses a built-in real-time clock to record the moment when the object appears in another zone, this information is transmitted via a digital bus to the system, from which we can determine the direction of movement of the object.Based on the developed block diagram and based on the requirements for the system being developed, a microcontroller from the STM family was selected. This family of microcontrollers, due to their performance, architecture and low power consumption, is best suited for working with the hardware of the system being developed.

The study aimed to investigate the effect of light source on growth performance and physiological response of broilers. A total number of one hundred and ninety-two unsexed seven-day old; Cobb broiler chicks were used in this study. Chicks were allocated into two treatment groups. Each treatment consisted of twelve replicates eight birds each. Birds in treatment 1 were exposed to yellow-reddish light produced from 60-watt incandescent lamps, while those in treatment 2 were subjected to white light by using 26 watt saving lamps. The light intensity for all experimental birds were 5 lux at the level of a bird till the end of experiment. Results showed that, using 26 watt saving lamps significantly increased body weight and body weight gain at 28, 35 and 42 days of age, feed consumption at 42 days of age and improved feed conversion ratio from 21-28 and 7-42 days of age. Moreover, using saving lamps significantly increased glucose, HDL and uric acid concentrations and significantly reduced all of creatinine, triglyceride and VLDL. It could be concluded that the using saving lamps as lighting source is more beneficial than the yellow-reddish light produced from 60-watt incandescent lamps

With the advancement of solid-state devices for lighting, illumination is on the verge of being completely restructured. This revolution comes with numerous advantages and viable opportunities that can transform the world of wireless communications for the better. Solid-state LEDs are rapidly replacing the contemporary incandescent and fluorescent lamps. In addition to their high energy efficiency, LEDs are desirable for their low heat generation, long lifespan, and their capability to switch on and off at an extremely high rate. The ability of switching between different levels of luminous intensity at such a rate has enabled the inception of a new communication technology referred to as visible light communication (VLC). With this technology, the LED lamps are additionally being used for data transmission. This paper provides a tutorial and a survey of VLC in terms of the design, development, and evaluation techniques as well as current challenges and their envisioned solutions. The focus of this paper is mainly directed towards an indoor setup. An overview of VLC, theory of illumination, system receivers, system architecture, and ongoing developments are provided. We further provide some baseline simulation results to give a technical background on the performance of VLC systems. Moreover, we provide the potential of incorporating VLC techniques in the current and upcoming technologies such as fifth-generation (5G), beyond fifth-generation (B5G) wireless communication trends including sixth-generation (6G), and intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) among others.

Recently, small computer fans have been demonstrated to be an effective method for teaching simple resistive circuits both qualitatively and quantitatively. The current through the fans is related to the rotational speed of the fans and allows multiple senses to be engaged (touch, sight, and hearing). Methods for learning simple circuits in an effective and accessible way have been explored for decades, and the prevailing approach has been the use of incandescent light bulbs. However, light bulbs can only be used to build a qualitative foundation. Quantitative experiments require non-bulb circuits, as the resistance of incandescent light bulbs changes with current. When fans are used, plots of current vs. voltage exhibit a linear relationship, which provides a nearly constant effective resistance for the fan. This suggests that fans can also be used to explore RC circuits both qualitatively and quantitatively, where the fans act as the resistive elements as well as the indicator. In this contribution, we will demonstrate that computer fans can be used to qualitatively explore the charging and discharging times for RC circuits. By monitoring the voltage across the capacitor as a function of time, we will also show that fans can be used for quantitative RC analysis.

Due to electrical energy reduction need, in the recent years, alternative light sources like Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and Light Emitting Diode lamps (LED) are replacing the classical incandescent light bulbs. Although they consume less power, these lamps have the disadvantages of being a significant source of harmonics. This means that the lightning network should be redesigned taking into account the magnitude of the current harmonic components and of the null current. To this aim, an accurate model easy to build and a fast analysis are very useful. This paper presents three models for different types of energy saving light bulbs, two existing ones and a new implementation, a procedure for model parameters identification and a comparison of the models. Some errors criteria are considered, both qualitative and quantitative. The periodic steady state response is computed using a frequency domain analysis.

In load modelling studies, the behaviour and electrical characteristic of a load are the main entries used in the identification of that load. This study is focused on the electrical characteristics of light bulbs (compact fluorescent light, fluorescent, incandescent, and light-emitting diode) with different characteristics that can be found in a house. While discovering these characteristics, current waveforms were used and electrical features were revealed. In addition, a novel method is proposed to identify individual loads by using these features. In this scope, a novel similarity score measure is introduced. In the presented study, similarity score measure is calculated from the total harmonic distortion, power, and harmonic current features. The experiments on randomly selected loads demonstrate that the proposed method successfully identified the loads even if they have similar characteristics or power consumption.

Upconversion luminescence materials have stimulated growing attention in photovoltaic cell owning to the ability of converting a few low-energy photons into a single high-energy photon. However, there still remains a daunting challenge to achieve upconversion emission covering the entire visible spectrum in a single material. Here, an incandescent broadband white upconversion emission covering the entire visible region is realized in a single Gd2O3:Yb3+ nanoparticles by utilization of adverse multiphonon relaxation. Importantly, tunable long fluorescence lifetime can be synchronously implemented in the single material, where the lifetime range spans one order of magnitude. Furthermore, benefiting from the broadband emission, the luminescence intensity achieves 482-fold improvement as the power increase from 0.53 W to 1.51 W. These broadband emissions are enabled by engineering the pathways of nonradiative de-excitation via multiphonon relaxation. Based on the kinetic analysis and mechanism research, the photon avalanche is demonstrated to play an important role for broadband emission. The warm white emission together with its tunable long lifetime provides a new avenue for developing single emitter-based white-light-emission materials for next-generation display and lighting technologies.

The long-term temporal stability of a spectrograph is one of the most important characteristics affecting the spectrograph’s radiometric performance. For many applications, from monitoring ocean color and lunar irradiance to laboratory irradiance measurement standards, the stability of a spectrograph is a primary factor in the overall measurement uncertainty and therefore is the major criterion for the suitability of the spectrograph as an optical-scale transfer standard. Here we report a facility built for testing the long-term radiometric stability of commercial, fiber-coupled spectrographs. The facility uses tungsten quartz-halogen irradiance standard lamps, type “FEL,” of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as light sources. To ensure the highest stability of these lamps during spectrograph tests, parameters such as lamp current, lamp voltage, and signals from an independent filter radiometer were continuously recorded to monitor any possible instability caused by such effects as lamp aging. Using this facility, we report the stability study of four spectrographs with spectral coverage from the UV to short-wave infrared over an interval of two months during which the lamp irradiance was stable to better than 0.02%. The tested spectrographs show good stability in general, ranging from 0.02% to 0.1% in the visible over a span of 11 days. For a longer two-month test, the variation in spectrograph responses increases by less than 0.1% with no discernable long-term drifts. In addition, we measured the response variation of two of the test spectrographs before and after they were sent to remote field locations and subjected to adverse environmental conditions. In this case, a larger response variation of up to 1.0% dependence on the wavelength was observed. We discuss the performance of the facility and the implications for using these spectrographs for several of NIST’s remote sensing projects as radiometric transfer standards based on these stability measurements.

This paper presents a rollable metamaterial screen for high-efficiency wireless power transfer (WPT) system based on magnetic resonance coupling, which operates at 4.5 MHz. The rollable metamaterial screen with a fully expanded area of 750 mm × 750 mm is located in the middle between transmitter and receiver coils and focuses the magnetic field and, by such a way, significantly improves power transfer efficiency (PTE). The metamaterial screen can be rolled up, e.g. onto the ceiling when it is not used, and thus does not require any designated space for the screen saving space. A WPT system with the rollable metamaterial screen is designed, fabricated, and characterized. Improved PTE is qualitatively and quantitatively verified by light bulb experiments and vector network analyzer measurements. The PTE of the WPT system with the metamaterial screen increases from 36 to 58.52% and 10.24 to 31.36% for the distances between the transmitter and receiver coils 100 and 150 cm, respectively. The effects of lateral and angular misalignments on the PTE of the WPT system are also studied. Obtained results show that the rollable metamaterial screen improves the PTE even at the misaligned condition.

Heterogeneous surface reactions play a key role in the chemistry of the indoor environment because of the large indoor surface‐to‐volume ratio. The presence of photocatalytic material in indoor paints may allow photochemical reactions to occur at wavelengths of light that are present indoors. One such potential reaction is the heterogeneous photooxidation of NO to HONO. NO(g) is commonly found indoors, originating from combustion sources, ventilation and infiltration of outdoor air. We studied the interaction of NO(g) with painted surfaces illuminated with indoor fluorescent and incandescent lighting. There is a loss of NO(g) to painted surfaces in the dark at both 0 and 50% RH. At 50% RH, there is a re‐release of some of that NO(g) under illumination. The same behavior is observed for illumination of different colored paints. This is in contrast to what is seen with TiO2 as the substrate, where photoenhanced uptake of NO(g) and formation of NO2(g) are observed. We hypothesize that the loss of NO(g) is due to adsorption and diffusion into the paint. The re‐release of NO under illumination is thought to be due to photooxidation of NO to HONO on the painted surface at higher relative humidities and subsequent HONO photolysis.

In this paper, the light emission phenomena over solid-state incandescent light emitting devices have been modelled based on Planck’s law of blackbody radiation. The emission spectra from the thermal excitation of nano-resistors with and without inclusion of an Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) or amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film filter is simulated and compared with those measured from actual devices. The simulated emission spectra are further utilized to study the light characteristics for SSI-LED with ITO, a-Si and polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) thin film filters.

One day a light bulb went on over our two heads, and we had this idea to write an article about the SPARK Museum in Bellingham, Washington, (Figure 1) and the history of electricity.

The design of quail egg incubators is intended to facilitate the hatching process. The heat source used in the incubator is produced from heaters that use incandescent lamps and humidifiers are used as humidity regulators. The temperature regulator uses a fan to maintain air circulation and reduce the temperature when the temperature has exceeded the setpoint. This tool is equipped with a DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor, an incubator motor is used for the egg turning process, a sound sensor is used to detect if an egg has hatched and a GSM module will send an SMS notification to the farmer. The whole system is controlled by Arduino Mega 2560. During the hatching period, the temperature needed to incubate quail eggs is 39oC and humidity is 60%. The eggs in the hatching machine are rotated once every 3 hours with a 45o rotation angle. This is so that the egg can be heated evenly. The hatching process takes 18 days, with a hatching success rate of 98% of 50 eggs. The use of power in the hatching machine is on average 62.44 watts up to 83.45 watts and for 1 hatching period for 18 days, that is 25.2392kWh.Keywords: Arduino Mega 2560, DHT11, humidifier, GSM module

The detailed balances of the different energy contributions in a commercial electric light bulb are presented. Previous studies on the physics of electric bulbs have been accomplished under some simplifying hypotheses. The present study tries to establish a rigorous balance of the supplied and dissipated powers in the lamp, to quantify the different contributions to this energy balance. The energy balances have been carried out for the filament and the bulb. In steady state, the supplied energy to the light bulb is entirely dissipated by conduction, convection and thermal radiation. In such conditions, the filament acquires a constant temperature depending on the supplied power. In this paper, the temperature of both the filament and the bulb were estimated from the solution of the energy balance equations in the system. We have analyzed a vacuum lamp, in which the convection is only external, and a gas-filled lamp, in which the convection is both external and internal. In addition, the relevance of the thermal conduction versus the radiation has been evaluated. This thorough study aims to be a great contribution to the analysis of heat transfer processes so important nowadays due to the recent concern about scarcity energy and environmental questions.

Indian Railways (IR) is the designated consumer of electricity in India. Railways utilize electrical energy to run railway on electric motors as well as for illumination of railway platforms, railway compartments, railway track, etc. Electricity in railways also utilized for railway traffic signalling. Electricity plays a very important role in Indian Railways. Indian Railways’ power demand is 2000 MW at present. Currently, there are only 60% of electrified railway tracks in India. The power requirement for 100% electrified broad gauge will increase from 2000 megawatts (MW) to 3400 MW. So, there is a need to reduce energy consumption by means of energy conservation. Formerly, the lighting systems used on railways are incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes, HPMV lamps, metal halide lamps and HPSV lamps. Lighting systems are one of the key areas of railway energy consumption. Today, LEDs are widely used for lighting in stations, service buildings, residential premises and more. This article gives a current condition, an initiative to reduce consumption, some energy conservation aspects in Indian Railways.
