Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) is a nonoptical imaging technique in which a map of the interior permittivity of a volume is estimated by making capacitance measurements at its boundary and solving an inverse problem. While previous ECT demonstrations have often been at centimeter scales, ECT is not limited to macroscopic systems. In this paper, we demonstrate ECT imaging of polymer microspheres and bacterial biofilms using a CMOS microelectrode array, achieving spatial resolution of 10 microns. Additionally, we propose a deep learning architecture and an improved multi-objective training scheme for reconstructing out-of-plane permittivity maps from the sensor measurements. Experimental results show that the proposed approach is able to resolve microscopic 3-D structures, achieving 91.5% prediction accuracy on the microsphere dataset and 82.7% on the biofilm dataset, including an average of 4.6% improvement over baseline computational methods.

The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is an electron-beam fixed-target experiment designed to achieve comprehensive model independent sensitivity to dark matter particles in the sub-GeV mass region. An upgrade to the LCLS-II accelerator will increase the beam energy available to LDMX from 4 to 8 GeV. Using detailed GEANT4-based simulations, we investigate the effect of the increased beam energy on the capabilities to separate signal and background, and demonstrate that the veto methodology developed for 4 GeV successfully rejects photon-induced backgrounds for at least $2\times10^{14}$ electrons on target at 8 GeV., Comment: 28 pages, 20 figures; corrected author list

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The constituents of dark matter are still unknown, and the viable possibilities span a vast range of masses. The physics community has established searching for sub-GeV dark matter as a high priority and identified accelerator-based experiments as an essential facet of this search strategy. A key goal of the accelerator-based dark matter program is testing the broad idea of thermally produced sub-GeV dark matter through experiments designed to directly produce dark matter particles. The most sensitive way to search for the production of light dark matter is to use a primary electron beam to produce it in fixed-target collisions. The Light Dark Matter eXperiment (LDMX) is an electron-beam fixed-target missing-momentum experiment that realizes this approach and provides unique sensitivity to light dark matter in the sub-GeV range. This contribution provides an overview of the theoretical motivation, the main experimental challenges, how LDMX addresses these challenges, and projected sensitivities. We further describe the capabilities of LDMX to explore other interesting new and standard physics, such as visibly-decaying axion and vector mediators or rare meson decays, and to provide timely electronuclear scattering measurements that will inform the modeling of neutrino-nucleus scattering for DUNE., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures. A prerequisite for achieving several important sensitivity milestones is the capability to efficiently reject backgrounds associated with few-GeV bremsstrahlung, by twelve orders of magnitude, while maintaining high efficiency for signal. The primary challenge arises from events with photo-nuclear reactions faking the missing-momentum property of a dark matter signal. We present a methodology developed for the LDMX detector concept that is capable of the required rejection. By employing a detailed GEANT4-based model of the detector response, we demonstrate that the sampling calorimetry proposed for LDMX can achieve better than $10^{-13}$ rejection of few-GeV photons. This suggests that the luminosity-limited sensitivity of LDMX can be realized at 4 GeV and higher beam energies.

We present an initial design study for LDMX, the Light Dark Matter Experiment, a small-scale accelerator experiment having broad sensitivity to both direct dark matter and mediator particle production in the sub-GeV mass region. LDMX employs missing momentum and energy techniques in multi-GeV electro-nuclear fixed-target collisions to explore couplings to electrons in uncharted regions that extend down to and below levels that are motivated by direct thermal freeze-out mechanisms. LDMX would also be sensitive to a wide range of visibly and invisibly decaying dark sector particles, thereby addressing many of the science drivers highlighted in the 2017 US Cosmic Visions New Ideas in Dark Matter Community Report. LDMX would achieve the required sensitivity by leveraging existing and developing detector technologies from the CMS, HPS and Mu2e experiments. In this paper, we present our initial design concept, detailed GEANT-based studies of detector performance, signal and background processes, and a preliminary analysis approach. We demonstrate how a first phase of LDMX could expand sensitivity to a variety of light dark matter, mediator, and millicharge particles by several orders of magnitude in coupling over the broad sub-GeV mass range.

- Abstract
Electrical capacitance tomography (ECT) can be used to predict information about the interior volume of an object based on measured capacitance at its boundaries. Here, we present a microscale capacitance tomography system with a spatial resolution of 10 microns using an active CMOS microelectrode array. We introduce a deep learning model for reconstructing 3-D volumes of cell cultures using the boundary capacitance measurements acquired from the sensor array, which is trained using a multi-objective loss function that combines a pixel-wise loss function, a distribution-based loss function, and a region-based loss function to improve model's reconstruction accuracy. The multi-objective loss function enhances the model's reconstruction accuracy by 3.2% compared to training only with a pixel-wise loss function. Compared to baseline computational methods, our model achieves an average of 4.6% improvement on the datasets evaluated. We demonstrate our approach on experimental datasets of bacterial biofilms, showcasing the system's ability to resolve microscopic spatial features of cell cultures in three dimensions. Microscale capacitance tomography can be a low-cost, low-power, label-free tool for 3-D imaging of biological samples.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The top quark is the heaviest elementary particle observed to date. Its large mass of about 173 GeV/c^2 makes the top quark act differently than other elementary fermions, as it decays before it hadronises, passing its spin information on to its decay products. In addition, the top quark plays an important role in higher-order loop corrections to standard model processes, which makes the top quark mass a crucial parameter for precision tests of the electroweak theory. The top quark is also a powerful probe for new phenomena beyond the standard model. During the time of discovery at the Tevatron in 1995 only a few properties of the top quark could be measured. In recent years, since the start of Tevatron Run II, the field of top-quark physics has changed and entered a precision era. This report summarises the latest measurements and studies of top-quark properties and gives prospects for future measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)., Comment: 76 pages, 35 figures, submitted to Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
In recent studies of inclusive $B$ decays, it has been suggested that either $B$ mesons decay much more copiously to final states with no open charm than currently assumed, or $B(D^0 \to K^-\pi^+)$ has to be reduced significantly. This note takes the experimental $B(D^0 \to K^-\pi^+)$ at its face value and estimates $B(b\to$ no open charm) using complementary methods: one accounts for the $c$ quark in $b\to c$ transitions, the other accounts for the $\bar c$ quark in $b\to c\bar c s$ transitions. Through cancellation of errors, the average gives our best estimate of $B(b\to$ no open charm), and the difference measures the consistency. The results of the methods are consistent with each other, strongly suggesting a much enhanced $B(b\to$ no open charm). This observation indicates that non-perturbative QCD effects are probably causing a sizable fraction of the $b\to c\bar cs$ transitions to be seen as charmless $b\to s$ processes, contrary to smaller traditional expectations. This mechanism has generally been overlooked and may explain the existing experimental data within the framework of the standard model. We then briefly discuss implications on baryon production governed by $b\to c\bar cs$ processes, rare hadronic $B$ decays and CP violation studies., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, Latex. High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Discrepancies between Standard Model predictions and experimental measurements of the fractions R_c and R_b of hadronic Z decays to charm and bottom are investigated. We show that there exists a discrepancy in two complementary determinations of B(Bbar --> D X). Reducing the branching ratio B(D0 --> K- Pi+) by about 15% from currently accepted values to 3.50+/-0.21 removes the discrepancy. Since B(D0 --> K- Pi+) calibrates most charmed hadron yields, the reduced value also eliminates the discrepancy between the predicted and measured values of R_c and mitigates a problem in semileptonic B decays. A reduction in B(D0 --> K- Pi+) would also mean that roughly 15% of all D0 and D+ decays have not been properly taken into account. It is shown that if the missing decay modes involve multiple charged particles, they would be more likely to pass the requirements for lifetime B tagging at LEP and SLC. This would mean that the charm tagging efficiency in (Z --> c cbar) has been underestimated. As a consequence R_b would need to be revised downward, potentially bringing it in line with the Standard Model prediction., Comment: RevTeX, 32 pages, 3 figures

- Abstract
Measurement of the decay of the Higgs boson to charm quarks provides a direct probe of the Higgs coupling to second-generation quarks. Therefore, it is crucial for understanding the structure of Yukawa couplings. In this thesis, a search for the Higgs boson decaying to charm quarks with the CMS experiment is presented. The search is designed for Lorentz-boosted Higgs bosons produced in association with vector (V) bosons (W or Z bosons). A novel approach that reconstructs both quarks from the Higgs boson decay with a single large-radius jet is adopted. The charm quark pair is identified with an advanced deep learning--based algorithm. This approach leads to a highly competitive result: Using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1, an observed (expected) upper limit on the VH cross section times the H->cc branching fraction of 71 (49) times the standard model expectation at 95% confidence level is obtained.A detailed description of the deep learning--based boosted object identification algorithm is also presented in this thesis. It is a versatile algorithm designed to identify and classify hadronic decays of highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks and W, Z, Higgs bosons. Using deep neural networks to directly access and process the raw information of all constituent particle-flow candidates of a jet, this advanced algorithm has achieved significant performance improvements compared to traditional approaches.

- Abstract
As successful as the Standard Model of particle physics has been it still has several major shortcomings which range from unanswered theoretical questions to a lack of any explanation for observed phenomena such as dark matter. One proposed theory for physics beyond the Standard Model which provides solutions for some of these issues is supersymmetry. This dissertation presents a search for supersymmetry using 2.3 fb^(-1) of proton-proton collision data. This data was collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC during 2015. This search focuses on top squark pair production where the produced stops both decay to an all hadronic final state. These decays are characterized by multiple jets and missing transverse momentum. A baseline search region is defined to be sensitive to signal processes which occur at rates many orders of magnitude lower than Standard Model processes. The sensitivity to various signal models is improved by dividing this baseline region into distinct categories. Events with an unreconstructed lepton from leptonic W boson decays constitute the primary background. There are also significant contributions from events where a Z boson decays invisibly to neutrinos especially in bins with higher missing transverse momentum. Events with multijet production where one jet has been severely mis-measured as well as those with a pair of top quarks and an invisibly decaying Z boson also have a small presence in the search region. The contributions from these processes to the search region is estimated using data control regions. No statistically significant deviations from the predicted background yields are observed. The results are interpreted in terms of exclusion limits using the Simplified Model Spectrum framework. Stop and neutralino masses are probed up to 780 GeV and 260 GeV respectively.

- Abstract
We report an observation of new bottom baryons produced in pp̄ collisions at the Tevatron. Using 1.1fb-1 of data collected by the CDF II detector, we observe four Λb0π± resonances in the fully reconstructed decay mode Λb0→Λc+π-, where Λc+→pK-π+. We interpret these states as the Σb(*) ± baryons and measure the following masses: mΣb+=5807.8-2.2+2. 0(stat.)±1.7(syst.)MeV/c2, mΣb-=5815.2±1.0(stat.)±1. 7(syst.)MeV/c2, and m(Σb*)-m(Σb)=21.2-1.9+2.0(stat.)-0.3+0. 4(syst.)MeV/c2

After a brief overview of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, the status of construction, installation and commissioning is described. Very good progress has been achieved in the past year. Though many significant challenges still lie ahead, CMS should be ready for recording data from first collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) accelerator complex at CERN in late 2007.

- Abstract
In recent studies of inclusive B decays, it has been suggested that either B mesons decay much more copiously to final states with no open charm than currently assumed, or B(D
0 → K− π+ ) has to be reduced significantly. This note takes the experimental B(D0 → K− π+ ) at its face value and estimates B(b → no open charm) using complementary methods: one accounts for the c quark in b → c transitions, the other accounts for the c quark in b → ccs transitions. Through cancellation of errors, the average gives our best estimate of B(b → no open charm), and the difference measures the consistency. The results of the methods are consistent with each other, strongly suggesting a much enhanced B(b → no open charm). This observation indicates that non-perturbative QCD effects are probably causing a sizable fraction of the b → ccs transitions to be seen as charmless b → s processes, contrary to smaller traditional expectations. This mechanism has generally been overlooked and may explain the existing experimental data within the framework of the standard model. We then briefly discuss implications on baryon production governed by b → ccs processes, rare hadronic B decays and CP violation studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
