Search

We present the first search for the pair production of dark particles $X$ via $K_L^0\to XX$ with $X$ decaying into two photons using the data collected by the KOTO experiment. No signal was observed in the mass range of 40 - 110 MeV/c$^2$ and 210 - 240 MeV/c$^2$. This sets upper limits on the branching fractions as $\mathcal{B}(K_L^0 \to XX)$ $<$ (1-4) $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ and $\mathcal{B}(K_L^0 \to XX)$ $<$ (1-2) $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ at the 90% confidence level for the two mass regions, respectively.

The rare decay $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of $( 7.20 \pm 0.05_{\rm stat} \pm 0.66_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-10}$, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from $K^{\pm}$ and scattered $K_L$ decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be $1.22 \pm 0.26$. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of $4.9 \times 10^{-9}$ on the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; published version, no change in the results. We report the first search for the $K_L \to \pi^0 \gamma$ decay, which is forbidden by Lorentz invariance, using the data from 2016 to 2018 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With a single event sensitivity of $(7.1\pm 0.3_{\rm stat.} \pm 1.6_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-8}$, no candidate event was observed in the signal region. The upper limit on the branching fraction was set to be $1.7\times 10^{-7}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

The logarithmic $R^2$-corrected $F(R)$ gravity is investigated as a prototype model of modified gravity theories with quantum corrections. By using the auxiliary field method, the model is described by the general relativity with a scalaron field. The scalaron field can be identified as an inflaton at the primordial inflation era. It is also one of the dark matter candidates in the dark energy era. It is found that a wide range of the parameters is consistent with the current observations of CMB fluctuations, dark energy and dark matter., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

A search for the rare decay $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to $2.2 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target, a single event sensitivity of $( 1.30 \pm 0.01_{\rm stat} \pm 0.14_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-9}$ was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of $3.0 \times 10^{-9}$ for the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$ at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for $K_L \!\to\! \pi^0 X^0$ was also set as $2.4 \times 10^{-9}$ at the 90% C.L., where $X^0$ is an invisible boson with a mass of $135~{\rm MeV}/c^2$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; published version, no change in the results. We searched for the $CP$-violating rare decay of neutral kaon, $K_{L} \to \pi^0 \nu \overline{\nu}$, in data from the first 100 hours of physics running in 2013 of the J-PARC KOTO experiment. One candidate event was observed while $0.34\pm0.16$ background events were expected. We set an upper limit of $5.1\times10^{-8}$ for the branching fraction at the 90\% confidence level (C.L.). An upper limit of $3.7\times10^{-8}$ at the 90\% C.L. for the $K_{L} \to \pi^{0} X^{0}$decay was also set for the first time, where $X^{0}$ is an invisible particle with a mass of 135 MeV/$c^{2}$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to be published in PTEP

The KOTO ($K^0$ at Tokai) experiment aims to observe the CP-violating rare decay $K_L \rightarrow \pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu}$ by using a long-lived neutral-kaon beam produced by the 30 GeV proton beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. The $K_L$ flux is an essential parameter for the measurement of the branching fraction. Three $K_L$ neutral decay modes, $K_L \rightarrow 3\pi^0$, $K_L \rightarrow 2\pi^0$, and $K_L \rightarrow 2\gamma$ were used to measure the $K_L$ flux in the beam line in the 2013 KOTO engineering run. A Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the detector acceptance for these decays. Agreement was found between the simulation model and the experimental data, and the remaining systematic uncertainty was estimated at the 1.4\% level. The $K_L$ flux was measured as $(4.183 \pm 0.017_{\mathrm{stat.}} \pm 0.059_{\mathrm{sys.}}) \times 10^7$ $K_L$ per $2\times 10^{14}$ protons on a 66-mm-long Au target., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures. We study the regularization dependence on meson properties and the phase diagram of quark matter by using the two flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We find that the meson properties and the phase structure do not show drastically difference depending the regularization procedures. We also find that the location or the existence of the critical end point highly depends on the regularization methods and the model parameters. Then we think that regularization and parameters are carefully considered when one investigates the QCD critical end point in the effective model studies., Comment: 28 pages

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is investigated in the $1/N_c$ expansion with the dimensional regularization. At the four-dimensional limit the meson propagators have simple forms in the leading order of the $1/N_c$ expansion. Thus the next to leading order calculation reduces to an ordinary one loop calculation. Here we obtain an explicit form of the $1/N_c$ correction and numerically evaluate the $N_c$ dependence for the gap equation., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model used to investigate low energy phenomena is nonrenormalizable, therefore the results depend on the regularization parameter in general. We investigate the phase diagram on temperature-chemical potential plane in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with the dimensional regularization. While the structure of the resulting diagram shows resemblance to the one in the frequently used cutoff regularization, some results of our study indicate striking difference between these regularizations. The nonet meson properties are studied in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at finite temperature and chemical potential using dimensional regularization. This study leads to the reasonable description which is mainly similar to one obtained in the model with the cutoff regularization. The rare decay K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 nu nu-bar was studied with the E391a detector at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. Based on 9.4 x 10^9 K0L decays, an upper limit of 8.1 x 10^{-7} was obtained for the branching fraction at 90% confidence level. We also set a limit on the K0(L) --> pi0 pi0 X (X --> invisible particles) process; the limit on the branching fraction varied from 7.0 x 10^{-7} to 4.0 x 10^{-5} for the mass of X ranging from 50 MeV/c^2 to 200 MeV/c^2., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We performed a search for the decay $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3\gamma$ with the E391a detector at KEK. In the data accumulated in 2005, no event was observed in the signal region. Based on the assumption of $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3\gamma$ proceeding via parity-violation, we obtained the single event sensitivity to be $(3.23\pm0.14)\times10^{-8}$, and set an upper limit on the branching ratio to be $7.4\times10^{-8}$ at the 90% confidence level. This is a factor of 3.2 improvement compared to the previous results. The results of $K_L^0 \rightarrow 3\gamma$ proceeding via parity-conservation were also presented in this paper.

Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft (KMT) term is one of low energy effective theory of QCD which includes the $U_A(1)$ anomaly. We investigate nonet meson properties in this model with three flavors of quarks. We employ two type of regularizations the dimensional and sharp cutoff ones. The model parameters are fixed phenomenologically for each regularization. Evaluating the kaon decay constant, the $\eta$ meson mass and the topological susceptibility, we show the regularization dependence of the results and discuss the applicability of the NJL model., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We investigate color superconducting phase at high density in the extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for the two flavor quarks. Because of the non-renormalizability of the model, physical observables may depend on the regularization procedure, that is why we apply two types of regularization, the cut-off and the dimensional one to evaluate the phase structure, the equation of state and the relationship between the mass and the radius of a dense star. To obtain the phase structure we evaluate the minimum of the effective potential at finite temperature and chemical potential. The stress tensor is calculated to derive the equation of state. Solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation, we show the relationship between the mass and the radius of a dense star. We performed a search for a light pseudoscalar particle $X$ in the decay $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->\gamma\gamma$ with the E391a detector at KEK. Such a particle with a mass of 214.3 MeV/$c^2$ was suggested by the HyperCP experiment. We found no evidence for $X$ and set an upper limit on the product branching ratio for $K_L^0->pi0pi0X$, $X->\gamma\gamma$ of $2.4 \times 10^{-7}$ at the 90% confidence level. Upper limits on the branching ratios in the mass region of $X$ from 194.3 to 219.3 MeV/$c^2$ are also presented., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We study the 2-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model at finite temperature, $T$, and chemical potential, $\mu$, in the dimensional regularization. The pion and sigma meson masses are calculated at finite $T$ and $\mu$. The color superconductivity is also discussed in the extended NJL model. We study the thermal and curvature effect to spontaneous symmetry breaking in phi^4 theory. The effective potential is evaluated in D-dimensional static universe with positive curvature R X S^{D-1} or negative curvature R X H^{D-1}. It is shown that temperature and positive curvature suppress the symmetry breaking, while negative curvature enhances it. To consider the back-reaction we numerically solve the gap equation and the Einstein equation simultaneously. A radius of a dense star on the color superconducting phase is investigated in an extended NJL type model with two flavors of quarks. We study QED corrections to chiral symmetry breaking in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with two flavors of quarks. In this model, the isospin symmetry is broken by the differences between the current quark masses and the electromagnetic charges of the up and down quarks. To leading order in the 1/N expansion, we calculate the effective potential of the model with one-loop QED corrections at finite temperature. Evaluating the effective potential, we study the influence of the isospin symmetry breaking on the orientation of chiral symmetry breaking. The current quark mass plays an essential role in maintaining the orientation of the chiral symmetry breaking. If the average of the up and down quark masses is small enough, we find a phase in which the pion field has non-vanishing expectation value and dynamical CP violation takes place., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures; added discussion about pion mass difference

The functional formulation and one-loop effective action for scalar self-interacting theory non-linearly coupled with some power of the curvature are studied. After the explicit one-loop renormalization at weak curvature, we investigated numerically the phase structure for such unusual phi^4 theory. It is demonstrated the possibility of curvature-induced phase transitions for positive values of the curvature power, while for negative values the radiative symmetry breaking does not take place. We calculate the explicit expression of the effective potential in a $\lambda\phi^4$ theory at finite temperature in a static universe for arbitrary spacetime dimensions (2\leq D < 5). To study the combined effects of the temperature and scale factor to the spontaneous symmetry breaking we evaluate the effective potential at finite temperature in $R\otimes S^{D-1}$ and $R\otimes H^{D-1}$. The phase structure of a $\lambda\phi^4$ theory is found by observing the minimum of the effective potential with varying temperature and scale factor. All the ring diagrams are resummed for $D\gtrsim 4$ to improve the loop expansion at high temperature. For a conformally coupled and a minimally coupled scalar field it is shown that temperature and positive curvature suppress the symmetry breaking, while negative curvature enhances it. We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures, Submitted to Phys. A muon range detector (MRD) has been constructed as a near detector for the KEK-to-Kamioka long-baseline neutrino experiment (K2K). The first search for the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar has been performed with the E787 detector at BNL. Based on zero events observed in the kinematical search region defined by 90 MeV/c < P_{pi^+} < 188 MeV/c and 135 MeV < E_{pi^0} < 180 MeV, an upper limit B(K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar) < 4.3 x 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level is established., Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys. We present a unified theory for pump-probe spectra in highly excited semiconductors, which is applicable throughout the whole density regime including the high-density electron-hole BCS state and the low-density excitonic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The analysis is based on the BCS-like pairing theory combined with the Bethe-Salpeter (BS) equation, which first enables us to incorporate the state-filling effect, the band-gap renormalization and the strong/weak electron-hole pair correlations in a unified manner. We show that the electron-hole BCS state is distinctly stabilized by the intense pump-light, and this result strongly suggests that the macroscopic quantum state can be observed under the strong photoexcitation. The calculated spectra considerably deviate from results given by the BCS-like mean field theory and the simple BS equation without electron-hole pair correlation especially in the intermediate density states between the electron-hole BCS state and the excitonic BEC state. In particular, we find the sharp stimulated emission and absorption lines which originate from the optical transition accompanied by the collective phase fluctuation mode in the electron-hole BCS state. From the pump-probe spectral viewpoint, we show that this fluctuation mode changes to the exciton mode with decreasing carrier density, Comment: RevTeX 11 pages, 10 figures. We present a unified theory of luminescence spectra for highly excited semiconductors, which is applicable both to the electron-hole BCS state and to the exciton Bose-Einstein condensate. The crossover behavior between electron-hole BCS state and exciton Bose-Einstein condensate clearly manifests itself in the calculated luminescence spectra. The analysis is based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation combined with the generalized random-phase-approximation, which enables us to consider the multiple Coulomb scattering and the quantum fluctuation associated with the center-of-mass motion of electron-hole pairs. In the crossover regime, the calculated spectra are essentially different from results obtained by the BCS-like mean-field theory and the interacting Boson model. In particular, it is found that the broad spectrum, arising from the recombination of electron-hole BCS state, splits into the P- and P_2-luminescence bands with decreasing the particle density. The dependence of these bands on the carrier density is in good agreement with experiments for highly excited semiconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, To appear in Solid State Communications

Four-fermion interaction models are considered to be prototype models for dynamical symmetry breaking.The present review deals with recent developments in the studies of dynamical symmetry breaking in the four-fermion interaction models and their extension in curved spacetime. Starting with the Minkowski spacetime in dimension $D$ ($2 \leq D \leq 4$) the effective potential in the leading order of $1/N$-expansion is calculated and the phase structure of the theory is investigated. In curved spacetime curvature-induced phase transitions are discussed in the circumstances where fermion masses are dynamically generated. Subsequently a possibility of curvature- and temperature-induced or curvature- and topology-induced phase transitions is discussed. It is also argued that the chiral symmetry broken by a weak magnetic field may be restored due to the presence of gravitational field. We investigate the effects of the external gravitational and constant magnetic fields to the dynamical symmetrybreaking. As simple models of the dynamical symmetry breaking we consider the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model and the supersymmetric Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (SUSY NJL) model non-minimally interacting with the external gravitational field and minimally interacting with constant magnetic field. The explicit expressions for the scalar and spinor Green functions are found up to the linear terms on the spacetime curvature and exactly for a constant magnetic field. We obtain the effective potential of the above models from the Green functions in the magnetic field in curved spacetime. Calculating the effective potential numerically with the varying curvature and/or magnetic fields we show the effects of the external gravitational and magnetic fields to the phase structure of the theories. In particular, increase of the curvature in the spontaneously broken chiral symmetry phase due to the fixed magnetic field makes this phase to be less broken. On the same time strong magnetic field quickly induces chiral symmetry breaking even at the presence of fixed gravitational field within nonbroken phase., Comment: 23 pages, Latex, epic.sty and eepic.sty are used

We investigate the effect of an external gravitational fields to the chiral symmetry breaking in the SUSY (supersymmetric) NJL (Nambu-Jona-Lasinio) model non-minimally interacting with external supergravity. Evaluating the effective potential in the leading order of the $1/N_{c}$-expansion and in the linear curvature approximation it is found the possibility of the chiral symmetry breaking in the SUSY NJL model in an external gravitational fields. We investigate four-fermion interactions with $N$-component fermion in Einstein universe for arbitrary space-time dimensions ($2 \leq D<4$). It is found that the effective potential for composite operator $\overline{\psi}\psi$ is calculable in the leading order of the $1/N$ expansion. The resulting effective potential is analyzed by varying the curvature of the space-time and is found to exhibit the symmetry restoration through the second-order phase transition. Two-point functions for scalar and spinor fields are investigated in Einstein universe ($R \otimes S^{\sN-1}$). We consider the theory of four-fermion interactions with N-component fermions in de Sitter space. It is found that the effective potential for a composite operator in the theory is calculable in the leading order of the 1/N expansion. The resulting effective potential is analyzed by varying both the four-fermion coupling constant and the curvature of the space-time. The critical curvature at which the dynamically generated fermion mass disappears is found to exist and is calculated analytically. The phase structure of four-fermion theories is thoroughly investigated with varying temperature and chemical potential for arbitrary space-time dimensions $(2 \leq D < 4)$ by using the 1/N expansion method. It is shown that the chiral symmetry is restored in the theory under consideration for sufficiently high temperature and/or chemical potential. The critical line dividing the symmetric and broken phase is given explicitly. In composite Higgs models it was pointed out that there is a possibility to violate CP symmetry dynamically. We demonstrated a simple model of dynamical CP violation in composite Higgs models. The phase structure of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with N-component fermions in curved space-time is studied in the leading order of the 1/N expansion. The effective potential for composite operator $\bar{\psi}\psi$ is calculated by using the normal coordinate expansion in the Schwinger proper-time method. The existence of the first-order phase transition caused by the change of the space-time curvature is confirmed and the dynamical mass of the fermion is calculated as a simultaneous function of the curvature and the four-fermion coupling constant. The dynamical origin of the CP violation in electroweak theory is investigated in composite Higgs models. The mechanism of the spontaneous CP violation proposed in other context by Dashen is adopted to construct simple models of the dynamical CP violation.
