The Rare-RI Ring (R3) is a recently commissioned cyclotron-like storage ring mass spectrometer dedicated to mass measurements of exotic nuclei far from stability at Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) in RIKEN. The first application of mass measurement using the R3 mass spectrometer at RIBF is reported. Rare isotopes produced at RIBF, $^{127}$Sn, $^{126}$In, $^{125}$Cd, $^{124}$Ag, $^{123}$Pd, were injected in R3. Masses of $^{126}$In, $^{125}$Cd, and $^{123}$Pd were measured whereby the mass uncertainty of $^{123}$Pd was improved. This is the first reported measurement with a new storage ring mass spectrometery technique realized at a heavy-ion cyclotron and employing individual injection of the pre-identified rare nuclei. The latter is essential for the future mass measurements of the rarest isotopes produced at RIBF. The impact of the new $^{123}$Pd result on the solar $r$-process abundances in a neutron star merger event is investigated by performing reaction network calculations of 20 trajectories with varying electron fraction $Y_e$. It is found that the neutron capture cross section on $^{123}$Pd increases by a factor of 2.2 and $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probability, $P_\mathrm{1n}$, of $^{123}$Rh increases by 14\%. The neutron capture cross section on $^{122}$Pd decreases by a factor of 2.6 leading to pileup of material at $A=122$, thus reproducing the trend of the solar $r$-process abundances. The trend of the two-neutron separation energies (S$_\mathrm{2n}$) was investigated for the Pd isotopic chain. The new mass measurement with improved uncertainty excludes large changes of the S$_\mathrm{2n}$ value at $N=77$. Such large increase of the S$_\mathrm{2n}$ values before $N=82$ was proposed as an alternative to the quenching of the $N=82$ shell gap to reproduce $r$-process abundances in the mass region of $A=112-124$.

Superconductors with noncentrosymmetric crystal structures such as Li2T3B(T:Pd,Pt) have been the focus of in-depth research with their parity mixing nature. In this study, we focused our research on non-magnetic impurity effect in Li2T3B (T: Pd, Pt). The nature of the pair breaking by non-magnetic impurity in the parity mixing superconducting state is still unclear. We prepared different quality samples of Li2Pd3B and Li2Pt3B by changing conditions in synthesizing, and sample qualities were estimated by residual resistivity. Spin singlet dominant superconductor Li2Pd3B exhibits the weak Tc suppression attributed by nonmagnetic impurity and defects, while Hc2 (0) value increased. This behavior is similar in ordinary s-wave superconductor. On the other hand, for the spin triplet dominant superconductor Li2Pt3B, it was suggested that the Cooper pair was broken and superconducting gap was decreased by non-magnetic impurities and defects. We report the systematic investigation of the specific heat of the noncentrosymmetric supercon- ductor Li2(Pd1-xPtx)3B as a function of x. There is a large deviation of the phononic specific heat from the conventional Debye specific heat for Pt-rich samples. In contrast with the fully-gapped con- ventional behavior for small x, a power-law temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat is observed even at x = 0.5. This results manifest a strongly-anisotropic or nodal superconducting gap even at x = 0.5 and a nodal superconducting gap for x >~ 0.9., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We find that a tetragonal CaBe_2Ge_2-type structure can be stabilized in non-stoichiometric LaPt_{2-x}Ge_{2+x}. We further discovered that tetragonal LaPt_{2-x}Ge_{2+x} with x=0.15 and 0.2 respectively superconduct at Tc=1.85 K and 1.95 K, which is about four time higher than that in monoclinic LaPt_2Ge_2., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We report synthesis, ^{195}Pt, ^{11}B and ^{7}Li NMR measurements, and first-principle band calculation for non-centrosymmetric superconductors Li_{2}(Pd_{1-x}Pt_{x})_{3}B (x=0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 0.84, 0.9 and 1). For 0 \leq x \leq 0.8, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 shows a clear coherence peak just below T_c, decreasing exponentially at low temperature, and the Knight shift ^{195}K decreases below T_c. For x=0.9 and 1.0, in contrast, 1/T_1 shows no coherence peak but a T^3 variation and ^{195}K remains unchanged across T_c. These results indicate that the superconducting state changes drastically from a spin-singlet dominant to a spin-triplet dominant state at x=0.8. We find that the distortion of B(Pt,Pd)_6 increases abruptly above x=0.8, which leads to an abrupt enhancement of the asymmetric spin-orbit coupling as confirmed by band calculation. Such local structure distortion that enhances the extent of inversion-symmetry breaking is primarily responsible for the pairing symmetry evolution. The H-T phase diagram and several superconducting parameters for Li_2(Pd_{1-x}Pt_x)_3B have been determined as a function of cation substitution x. Notably, the coherence length may be linear in platinum concentration. Despite the superconducting pairing state and band structure apparently changing fundamentally, the H-T phase diagram is essentially unchanged. Unusual aspects of the shape of the H-T phase diagram are discussed. The upper critical field H_c2(0) is not anomalously high for any Pt content, likely due to an absence of high carrier masses - in such a case, the value of H_c2(0) would not serve as a probe for novel physics., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We report ^{11}B and ^{195}Pt NMR measurements in non-centrosymmetric superconductor Li_2Pt_3B. We find that the spin susceptibility measured by the Knight shift remains unchanged across the superconducting transition temperature T_c. With decreasing temperature (T) below T_c, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 decreases with no coherence peak and is in proportion to T^3. These results indicate that the Cooper pair is in the spin-triplet state and that there exist line nodes in the superconducting gap function. They are in sharp contrast with those in the isostructural Li_2Pd_3B which is a spin-singlet, s-wave superconductor, and are ascribed to the enhanced spin-orbit coupling due to the lack of spatial inversion symmetry. Recent studies show that the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior of MnSi and Fe spans over an unexpectedly broad pressure range, between the critical pressure p_c and around 2p_c. In order to determine the extension of their NFL regions, we analyze the evolution of the resistivity rho(T) A(p)T^n at higher pressures. We find that in MnSi the n=3/2 exponent holds below 4.8 GPa=3 p_c, but it increases above that pressure. At 7.2 GPa we observe the low temperature Fermi liquid exponent n=2 whereas for T>1.5 K, n=5/3. Our measurements in Fe show that the NFL behavior rho T^{5/3} extends at least up to 30.5 GPa, above the entire superconducting (SC) region. In the studied pressure range, the onset of the SC transition reduces by a factor 10 down to T_c^onset(30.5 GPa)=0.23 K, while the A-coefficient diminishes monotonically by around 50%., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings SCES 2005

We report a ^{11}B NMR measurement on the recently discovered superconductor Li_2Pd_3B. The nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 shows a well-defined coherence peak just below T_c (H=1.46 T)=5.7 K, and the spin susceptibility measured by the Knight shift also decreases below T_c. These results indicate that the superconductivity is of conventional nature, with an isotropic gap. Our results also suggest that the $p$-electrons of boron and the d-electrons of palladium that hybridize with boron $p$-electrons are primarily responsible for the superconductivity., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect and magnetoresistance in the filled-skutterudite superconductor LaRu4P12, which is a reference material of PrRu4P12 that exhibits a metal-insulator (M-I) transition at T_MI~60 K. The observed dHvA branches for the main Fermi surface (FS) are well explained by the band-structure calculation, using the full potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method with the local-density approximation, suggesting a nesting instability with q =(1,0,0) in the main multiply connected FS as expected also in PrRu4P12. Observed cyclotron effective masses of (2.6-11.8)m_0, which are roughly twice the calculated masses, indicate the large mass enhancement even in the La-skutterudites. Comparing the FS between LaRu4P12 and PrRu4P12, an essential role of c-f hybridization cooperating with the FS nesting in driving the the M-I transition in PrRu4P12 has been clarified., Comment: Appeared in Physical Review B

Following the discovery of superconductivity in epsilon-iron, subsequent experiments hinted at non-Fermi liquid behaviour of the normal phase and sensitive dependence of the superconducting state on disorder, both signatures of unconventional pairing. We report further resistive measurements under pressure of samples of iron from multiple sources. The normal state resistivity of epsilon-iron varied as rho_0+AT^{5/3} at low temperature over the entire superconducting pressure domain. The superconductivity could be destroyed by mechanical work, and was restored by annealing, demonstrating sensitivity to the residual resistivity rho_0. There is a strong correlation between the rho_0 and A coefficients and the superconducting critical temperature T_c. Within the partial resistive transition there was a significant current dependence, with V(I)=a(I-I_0)+bI^2, with a >> b, possibly indicating flux-flow resistivity, even in the absence of an externally applied magnetic field., Comment: Proceedings of AIRAPT 19/EHPRG 41, Bordeaux 2003

We have investigated the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$.The topology of Fermi surface is close to the reference compound LaOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ and well explained by the band structure calculation based on the FLAPW-LDA+U method, where the 4{\it f} electrons are localized. We have confirmed a highly enhanced cyclotron effective mass 2.4$\sim7.6m_{\rm 0}$ which is apparently large compared to the usual Pr-based compounds., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in Phys. Last year, iron was reported to become superconducting at temperatures below 2K and pressures between 15 and 30 GPa. The evidence presented was a weak resistivity drop, suppressed by a magnetic field above 0.2 T, and a small Meissner signal. However, a compelling demonstration, such as the occurrence of zero resistance, was lacking. Here we report the measurement of a complete resistive transition at 22.2 GPa with an onset slightly above 2 K in two very pure samples of iron, of different origins. The superconductivity appears unusually sensitive to disorder, developing only when the electronic mean free path is above a threshold value, while the normal state resistivity is characteristic of a nearly ferromagnetic metal., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. The superconducting gap in a CeRu$_{2}$ single crystal is investigated by point contacts. BCS-like behavior of the gap $\Delta $ in the temperature range below T$_{c}^{*}<$T$_{c}$, where T$_{c}$ is the critical temperature, is established, indicating the presence of a gapless superconductivity region (between T$_{c}^{*}$ and T$_{c}$). The pair-breaking effect of paramagnetic impurities, supposedly Ce ions, is taken into consideration using the Scalski-Betbeder-Matibet-Weiss approach based on Abrikosov-Gorkov theory. It allows us to recalculate the superconducting order parameter $\Delta ^{\alpha} $ (in the presence of paramagnetic impurities) and the gap $\Delta ^{P}$ (in the pure case) for the single crystal and for the previously studied polycrystalline CeRu$_{2}$. The value 2$\Delta^{P}$(0)$ \approx $2 meV, with 2$\Delta ^{P}$(0)$/$k$_{B}$T$_{c} \approx $3.75, is found in both cases, indicating that CeRu$_{2}$ is a ``moderate'' strong-coupling superconductor., Comment: 4 pages incl. 3 figs., publ. in Fiz. We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiment on the filled skutterudite PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ exhibiting apparent Kondo-like behaviors in the transport and thermal properties. We have found enormously enhanced cyclotron effective mass $m^{\rm \ast}_{\rm c}=81 m_{\rm 0}$ in the high field phase (HFP), which indicates that PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ is the first Pr-compound in which really heavy mass has been unambiguously confirmed. Also in the low field non-magnetic ordered phase (LOP), we observed the dHvA branch with $m^{\rm \ast}_{\rm c}=10 m_{0}$ that is quite heavy taking into account its small Fermi surface volume (0.15% of the Brillouin zone size). The insensitivity of mass in LOP against the magnetic field suggests that the quadrupolar interaction plays a main role both in the mass renormalization and the LOP formation., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Phys. We present magnetization data on a weakly pinned CeRu_2 single crystal showing the existence of a stable state of the vortex lattice in the peak effect region. The stable state is achieved by cycling the magnetic field by small amplitude. This stable state is characterized by a unique value of critical current density (J_c), independent of the magnetic history of the sample. The results support the recent model proposed by Ravikumar et al \cite{r39} on the history dependence of the J_c., Comment: 6 pages and 5 figures
