The report stated that supramolecular cation structures of (NH(sub 4)(super +)) (crown ethers and (NH(sub 2)(super -)) NH(sub 3)(super +)) (crown ethers were incorporated into partially charge-transferred electrically conducting [Ni(dmit)(sub 2)] salts. The large and flexible [18] crown-6 allowed for maintaining the same ionic channel structure through replacement of the NH(sub 4)(super +) cation by NH(sub 2)-NH (sub 3)(super +).

Monovalent cations (M(super +) = Li(super +), Na(super +), K(super +). Rb(super +), and NH(sub 4)(super +) and 12-crown-4 were assembled to new supramolecular cation (SC(super +)) structures of M(super +)(12-crown-4)(sub n) (n - 1 and 2). The SC(super +) structures were incorporated into the electrically conducting Ni-(dmit)(sub 2) salts.

Silicon-29 selective inversion recovery shows that small, acyclic aluminosilicate species in highly alkaline aqueous solution exchange silicate monimer much more quickly than either all-silicate anorions or aluminosilicates that contain Al in ring or cage structures.

The synthesis of a new, more water soluble derivative of the ligand TREN-Me-3.2-HOPO is presented. Solution thermodynamic studies have confirmed that the high affinity of this class of ligands for the GD-(super 3+) cation is retained as an important development in the development of new magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents.

The crystal and magnetic structures of the 1:1 salts of (M(dmit)2)- (M = Ni and Au) with the p-EPYNN (p-N-ethylpyridinium alpha-nitronyl nitroxide) cationic radical were investigated. Both crystal contain one-dimensional p-EPYNN chains with alternate head-to-tail orientation. However, a marked difference exists in the arrangement of these chains. The one-dimensional Au(dmit)2 chain is sandwiched between the p-EPYNN chains, resulting in isolation of each one-dimensional Au(dmit)2 chain. In contrast, every two chains of Ni(dmit)2 are sandwiched between the p-EPYNN chains, resulting in the Ni(dmit)2 ladder-chain formation.

A combined study of typical SA derivatives by NEXAFS and XPS spectroscopies was examined. This was done by comparing the spectra of related compounds, polarization dependence for oriented samples and simulating the spectra by ab initio molecular orbita (MO) calculations of the core-excited states by the improved virtual orbital method. Results reveal that N1s and O1s XPS spectra showed double-peaked features characteristic of the mixture of the OH- and NH-forms. Furthermore, NEXAFS is useful for studying tautomerism, amorphous states and ultrathin films.

Co2+ magnetic cation was incorporated into (Ni(dmit)2)- pi-spin system.

Isolation of preparative amount of the 1,2-naphthalocyaninato-[C.sub.4h] (1,2-Nc-[C.sub.4h]) ligand from the crude mixture and preparation of its partially oxidized one-dimensional conductor of axially CN ligated species are reported. The [C.sub.4h] symmetry is further confirmed by X-ray structure analysis.

Pc based conductors with clearly defined structures are described. It is revealed that Pc based conductors had rather unique properties as a 1D system. It is found that the electronic properties at low temperature were severely affected by the defects or impurities in the crystal due to their highly one-dimensional electronic structure.

Mixed-stack structures of monovalent [Ni(dmit)(sub 2)](super -) and planar M(super +)(4,13-diaza-18-crown-6) (M(super +) = K(super +) or Rb(super +)) supramolecular cation are obtained in the isostructural M(super +)(4,13-diaza-18-crown-6)[Ni(dmit)(sub 2)] salts. The mixed-stack structure decreases the effective pi-pi overlap of [Ni(dmit)(sub 2)](super -) molecules, which results in the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic linear chain of S = 1/2 spins within the crystal.

The synthesis of biased helical perfluorinated side chains by the addition of chiral headgroups is described and the helical structures in solution are observed by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD). The VCD technique successfully revealed the absolute configuration of the biased simple helix in solution with the help of theoretical calculations.

An axially ligated Co(tmp) (tmp = 5,10,15,20-tetramethylporphyrinato) anion, [CoIII(tmp)(CN)2]−, has been prepared and subjected to electrochemical oxidation to obtain the open shell tmp π-ligand. With acetone as the solvent, solvent-free neutral radical crystals of CoIII(tmp)(CN)2 are obtained, whereas solvent-inclusive crystals of CoIII(tmp)(CN)2·2CH3CN are obtained with CH3CN as the solvent. In both crystals, the open shell tmp ring deforms into a ruffled form, which makes the π–π interactions in the crystal weak. Thus, the electrical conductivity is low, and the crystals behave as semiconductors with a room temperature resistivity of 106Ω cm and an activation energy of about 0.3 eV. When the solvent is acetone, non-oxidized crystals of the CN-bridged polymer {[CoIII(tmp)(CN)](acetone)}n are obtained as a byproduct. The closed shell tmp ring deforms into a ruffled form, and there π–π interactions in the crystal are negligible. The room temperature resistivity is rather high at about 108Ω cm.
