Polar codes are the first capacity-achieving error-correction code which has attracted much research attention. Among many decoding methods, successive cancellation list decoding (SCLD) is considered as a representative decoding method that can achieve a good error-correcting performance. However, the long latency of SCLD is a significant matter that hinders practical applications, which is mainly caused by two features of the SCLD process: tree traversal and path-splitting. To alleviate the main reasons, a new multi-bit SCLD algorithm is proposed in this paper to decode several bits simultaneously without conducting any tree traversal and path-splitting when a node in the decoding tree holds a specific condition. In addition, a path ignoring (PI) technique is proposed to mitigate the condition of the multi-bit SCLD, which results in an additional reduction of latency. The proposed multi-bit decoding method and the PI technique play a significant role in reducing the number of path-splitting cases, by 96% compared to the conventional SCLD method. Simulation results show that compared to the conventional SCLD with list sizes 8 and 16, the proposed multi-bit decoding associated with the PI technique reduces the overall decoding cycles by 77% and 79%, respectively, with almost no degradation of error-correcting performance.

In the successive cancellation list decoding of polar codes, the metric sorting dominates the overall decoding latency. To reduce the latency of metric sorting, this paper proposes a new sorting method, called interleaved local sorting, which divides the metrics to be sorted into several groups and locally sorts each group independently. In addition, an interleaving scheme is proposed to recover the performance degradation caused by the local sorting. A hardware architecture effective in reducing the overall latency as well as the hardware complexity is also proposed based on the proposed metric sorting. The evaluation results show that the proposed interleaved local sorting architecture outperforms the state-of-the-art metric sorting architectures in terms of latency and hardware complexity when the list size is not small.

The successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding is used to achieve good error-correcting performance for practical finite-length polar codes. However, the metric sorting that is repeatedly performed in SCL decoding increases the overall decoding latency as the list size increases, making it difficult to apply the SCL decoding to the applications with limited processing time. To reduce the latency of the metric sorting, this paper proposes a new sorting method derived by analyzing path extension cases encountered in SCL decoding. The proposed method can avoid unnecessary sorting operations by adaptively determining the sorting size, and can be combined with other metric sorting methods. Simulation results show that the proposed method significantly reduces the decoding latency for various list sizes and code rates without degrading the error-correcting performance. The proposed method also becomes more effective as the code rate or the list size increases. Combined with the state-of-the-art sorting method, the proposed method reduces the average SCL decoding latency for a (1024, 512) polar code by 33.1% when the list size is 8.

Introduction Adolescents are especially susceptible to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke exposure. Mental health issues may be one of these negative consequences. This study aimed to explore the association between secondhand smoke exposure and anxiety among Korean adolescents. Methods This study used the nationwide representative cross-sectional data obtained from the 4-year (2020-2023) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. In total, 214514 individuals aged 12–18 years were included in this study (109910 males and 104604 females). Secondhand smoke exposure was assessed based on responses to questions concerning the days they were exposed (at home and in public places), while anxiety levels were measured using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 scale. Multivariable logistic regression analysis divided by sex was performed to explore the association (p=0.0173 for interaction by secondhand smoke exposure and sex), and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. Results Among the study population, 8.8% of the male and 15.6% of the female participants had anxiety. After adjusting for covariates, adolescents with secondhand smoke exposure had a higher likelihood of reporting anxiety than those without the exposure (male, OR=1.23; 95% CI: 1.16–1.29; female, OR=1.27; 95% CI: 1.21–1.33). In additional stratified analyses, this association was more prominent among those who were never smokers, were exposed for more days, and had severe levels of anxiety. Conclusions This study found that secondhand smoke exposure was associated with anxiety in adolescents; hence, proper political interventions to reduce secondhand smoke exposure may be required.

This paper aims to empirically analyze how competitive and cultural factors moderate the relationship between electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) characteristics and sales in the US and Korean film industries. A conceptual model was developed based on the cue utilization theory (CUT) to analyze the role of cultural and competitive factors that moderate the relationship between three characteristics of eWOM (volume, valence, and variance) and movie sales. Data of 45 days of 163 films released in Korea and the US were collected and a total of 7,335 samples were analyzed by panel regression. As results, competitive factors enhanced the influence of the eWOM of a focal film and this moderating effect depended on the eWOM characteristics. It also revealed that the effect of eWOM had a greater effect on movie sales in Korea than in the US.

Abstract Background Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder among adolescents, significantly impacting their concentration and learning capabilities. The connection between emotional well-being and sleep is well-established, and Korean adolescents are particularly prone to inadequate sleep. This study aimed to determine the association between sleep duration and GAD in Korean adolescents. Methods This study was conducted using data from 106,513 adolescents aged 12–18 years. Data from the 2020–2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used. Sleep duration was classified into five groups, based on an average sleep duration of 7–7.9 h in adolescents. Social jet lag was defined as a misalignment between an individual's biological and social clocks. Differences in sleep duration between weekdays and weekends, social jet lag, and bedtime were each classified into three categories. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between sleep duration and GAD. Results Comparing the five groups classified based on sleep duration, adolescents in the groups that slept less experienced a significant increase in the odds of developing GAD (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: boys: 1.10 in the 6.0–6.9-h group, 1.14 in the 5.0–5.9-h group, and 1.23 in the ≤ 4.9-h group; girls: 1.05 in the 6.0–6.9-h group, 1.19 in the 5.0–5.9-h group, 1.22 in the ≤ 4.9-h group). Adolescents with poor sleep quality experienced more frequent instances of inadequate sleep (aOR: boys: 2.51; girls: 2.43). Conclusions GAD is strongly associated with insufficient sleep. Consequently, it is imperative to assess and address GAD in adolescents with irregular sleep patterns.

Abstract Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is technically challenging and requires a high level of skill. However, there is no effective method of exposing the submucosal plane during dissection. In this study, the efficacy of robot arm-assisted tissue traction for gastric ESD was evaluated using an in vivo porcine model. The stomach of each pig was divided into eight locations. In the conventional ESD (C-ESD) group, one ESD was performed at each location (N = 8). In the robot arm-assisted ESD (R-ESD) group, two ESDs were performed at each location (N = 16). The primary endpoint was the submucosal dissection speed (mm2/s). The robot arm could apply tissue traction in the desired direction and successfully expose the submucosal plane during submucosal dissection in all lesion locations. The submucosal dissection speed was significantly faster in the R-ESD group than in the C-ESD group (p = 0.005). The blind dissection rate was significantly lower in the R-ESD group (P = 0.000). The robotic arm-assisted traction in ESD enabled a significant improvement in submucosal dissection speed, blind dissection rate which suggests the potential for making ESD easier and enhancing procedural efficiency and safety.

Abstract Background Anxiety disorders are common during adolescence; therefore, detecting anxiety disorders among adolescents and providing appropriate treatment are crucial. Studies have suggested that watching online audiovisual broadcasts like mukbang and cookbang (hereafter mukbang), where hosts eat or cook food, may influence anxiety disorders. However, there is insufficient research on the association between watching mukbang and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Therefore, we investigated the association between watching mukbang and GAD among Korean adolescents. Methods We analyzed 51,764 adolescents who participated in the 2020 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (KYRBS). The participants were asked how frequently they watched mukbang per week over the past 12 months. Anxiety disorders were assessed using the generalized anxiety disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaire. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed after adjusting for confounding variables. Results The prevalence of GAD was higher among adolescents who watched mukbang compared to those who did not (aOR: 1.100, 95% CI: 1.026–1.180, P = 0.008 in male participants; aOR: 1.090, 95% CI: 1.003–1.185, P = 0.042 in female participants). The frequency of watching mukbang showed a dose-dependent relationship with a greater likelihood of GAD in female adolescents. Conclusion This study’s results showed that watching mukbang is associated with GAD in Korean adolescents. Proper interventions for mental health are needed for adolescents who watch mukbang.

Background: Police officers are an occupational group with a high risk of developing musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and mental diseases because of the nature of their work. This study aimed to gain an understanding of job-related health risks by comparing overall health awareness, presence of physical and mental disabilities and their causes, medical use patterns, and quality of life of the general public through a survey. Methods: In this comparative study, police officer data were collected through a survey conducted from October 1, 2022, to November 15, 2022, and general public data from the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of Korea were used for comparison. Results: Police officers’ health perception of physical or mental disabilities was significantly more negative than that of the general public because of their work characteristics, patterns, and functions. In addition, police officers with disabilities had severe work and daily living limitations, and their awareness of their overall quality of life was low enough to warrant alarm. Despite their high rates of seeking treatment in medical institutions, continuous medical use was limited. Conclusion: More research on major diseases to which police officers are at risk of exposure is necessary to analyze risk factors and accumulate related data to systematize health management. In addition, Korean medicine treatment techniques with excellent disease prevention are recommended for the health management of police officers.

Abstract Background Eating habits formed during adolescence greatly influence the maintenance of health in adulthood. With the recent development of social media and easy access to the Internet, adolescents watch plenty of food videos, particularly Mukbang and Cookbnag(eating show)content. This media genre’s impact on food choices has been covered in several studies; however, studies on unhealthy eating habits directly related to adolescents’ exposure to eating shows are insufficient. Methods For this study, we used data from the 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted in 2022 and finalized 50,451 participants. The extent of exposure to eating show media over the course of a week, as well as the consumption of fast food, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), and high caffeinated beverages within that week were measured through self-reporting questionnaires. We classified the participants into two groups based on their frequency of watching eating shows. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between eating show and unhealthy food consumption. Results For both males and females, eating show exposure was strongly associated with the consumption of fast food (male: OR:1.37, 95% CI:1.26–1.49; female: OR:1.46, 95% CI:1.36–1.57), SSB (male: OR:1.42, 95% CI:1.26–1.60; female: OR:1.51, 95% CI:1.35–1.70), and high caffeinated beverage (male: OR:1.30, 95% CI:1.23–1.37; female: OR:1.24, 95% CI:1.18–1.31). It was observed that both sexes were more likely to frequently eat unhealthy food than students who did not watch eating shows. Conclusion Among Korean adolescents, students exposed to eating shows, which primarily aim to entertain, were more likely to consume fast food, SSBs, and high caffeinated beverages. Therefore, this study's findings suggest that eating show could influence adolescents' food choices, highlighting the need for interest in emerging cultures and corresponding health policies.

Background This study evaluates the effectiveness of Therapeutic Hypothermia (TH) in treating poor-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), focusing on functional outcomes, mortality, and complications such as vasospasm, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and hydrocephalus. Methods Adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central, up to November 2023. Nine studies involving 368 patients were selected based on eligibility criteria focusing on TH in poor-grade SAH patients. Data extraction, bias assessment, and evidence certainty were systematically performed. Results The primary analysis of unfavorable outcomes in 271 participants showed no significant difference between the TH and standard care groups (risk ratio [RR], 0.87). However, a significant reduction in vasospasm was observed in the TH group (RR, 0.63) among 174 participants. No significant differences were found in DCI, hydrocephalus, and mortality rates in the respective participant groups. Conclusions TH did not significantly improve primary unfavorable outcomes in poor-grade SAH patients. However, the reduction in vasospasm rates indicates potential specific benefits. The absence of significant findings in other secondary outcomes and mortality highlights the need for further research to better understand TH's role in treating this patient population.

Abstract The global older adult population is increasing. Early detection and intervention through health check-ups are crucial for successful aging, as they play a significant role in identifying and addressing diseases. This study explored the relationship between the utilization of senior centers and the promotion of health check-ups. It utilized data from 10,097 individuals aged 65 years and above, sourced from the 2020 Elderly Survey in South Korea. The primary variable of interest was classified into two groups: those who utilized senior centers and those who did not. Subgroups were further categorized based on the frequency of usage and the presence of family members among senior centers users. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between the utilization of senior centers and participation in health check-ups. Both men and women utilizing senior centers demonstrated a higher likelihood of participating in health check-ups compared with those who did not use senior centers. Participants visiting senior centers in a week exhibited a progressively higher likelihood of engaging in health check-ups compared with those who visited such senior centers zero times a week. Senior centers can serve as effective intervention methods to enhance health check-ups among older adults. Furthermore, this can contribute to fostering successful aging among older adults.

Abstract Background In response to the rapid aging population and increasing number of cancer patients, discussions on dignified end-of-life (EoL) decisions are active around the world. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the differences in EoL care patterns between types of hospice used for cancer patients. Methods In this population-based cohort study, the Korean National Health Insurance Service cohort data containing all registered cancer patients who died between 2017 and 2021 were used. A total of 408,964 individuals were eligible for analysis. The variable of interest, the type of hospice used in the 6 months before death, was classified as follows: (1) Non-hospice users; (2) Hospital-based hospice single users; (3) Home-based hospice single users; (4) Combined hospice users. The outcomes were set as patterns of care, including intense care and supportive care. To identify differences in care patterns between hospice types, a generalized linear model with zero-inflated negative binomial distribution was applied. Results Hospice enrollment was associated with less intense care and more supportive care near death. Notably, those who used combined hospice care had the lowest probability and frequency of receiving intense care (aOR: 0.18, 95% CI: 0.17–0.19, aRR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.44–0.49), while home-based hospice single users had the highest probability and frequency of receiving supportive care (Prescription for narcotic analgesics, aOR: 2.95, 95% CI: 2.69–3.23, aRR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.41–1.49; Mental health care, aOR: 3.40, 95% CI: 3.13–3.69, aRR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.31–1.39). Conclusion Our findings suggest that although intense care for life-sustaining decreases with hospice enrollment, QoL at the EoL actually improves with appropriate supportive care. This study is meaningful in that it not only offers valuable insight into hospice care for terminally ill patients, but also provides policy implications for the introduction of patient-centered community-based hospice services.

Abstract Background It has been suggested that Mukbang and Cookbang, a type of eating broadcast originating from Korea and gaining popularity, may contribute to obesity. However, despite suggestions that Mukbang might contribute to obesity, studies investigating the impact of watching Mukbang on obesity is lacking. The goal of this study is to analyze the relationship between watching Mukbang and Cookbang and body mass index (BMI) status in Korean adolescents. All analyses were stratified by gender. Methods This study utilized data from the 2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Surveys. The anonymous online survey was conducted with 56,213 students, and 51,850 students (92.2%) who participated in the survey were analyzed. Participants reported the frequency of watching Mukbang and Cookbang per week over the previous 12 months. BMI was categorized into four subgroups based on percentiles: underweight ( 95th percentile). This study used multinomial logistic regression for analysis. Results The likelihood of being obese was significantly higher in Mukbang-watching boys compared to those who never watched Mukbang and Cookbang (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12–1.32). Abstract Phase diagrams of materials are typically based on a static order parameter, but it faces challenges when distinguishing subtle phase changes, such as re-ordering. Here, we report a dynamic nonequilibrium order parameter termed re-order parameter to determine subtle phases and their transitions in interacting magnets. The dynamical precession of magnetization, so-called magnon, premises as a reliable re-order parameter of strong spin-orbit coupled magnets. We employ orthoferrites YFeO3 and its Mn-doped variations, where diverse magnetic phases, including canted antiferromagnetic (Γ4) and collinear antiferromagnetic (Γ1) states, have been well-established. Low-energy magnon uncovers the spin-orbit coupling-induced subtle magnetic structures, resulting in distinct terahertz emissions. The temporal and spectral parameters of magnon emission exhibit characteristics akin to BCS-type order parameters, constructing the magnetic phase diagram of Mn-doped YFeO3. This approach further reveals a concealed ferrimagnetic phase within the Γ1 state, underscoring its potential to search for hidden phases of materials, completing their phase diagrams.

A pure molybdenum (Mo) coating layer was manufactured by using the atmospheric plasma spray (APS) process and its wear and corrosion characteristics were investigated in this study. A Mo coating layer was prepared to a thickness of approximately 480 μm, and it had sound physical properties with a porosity of 2.9% and hardness of 434 Hv. Room temperature dry wear characteristics were measured through a ball-on-disk test under load conditions of 5 N, 10 N and 15 N. Based on the coefficient of friction graph at 5 N and 10 N, the oxides formed during wear functioned as a wear lubricant, thereby confirming an increase in wear resistance. However, at 15 N, wear behavior changed, and wear occurred due to splat pulling out. A potentiodynamic polarization test was conducted under an artificial seawater atmosphere, and Ecorr and Icorr measured 0.717 V and 7.2E-5 A/cm2, respectively. Corrosion mainly occurred at the splat boundary and pores that were present in the initial state. Based on the findings above, the potential application of APS Mo coating material was also discussed.

Al-Ti-Si-W quaternary powders were mechanically synthesized by planetary ball milling; and further consolidated by spark plasma sintering. The nominal compositions of the quaternary alloys were designed to be Al60Ti30Si5W5 and Al45Ti40Si10W5 (wt.%). The microstructural evolution of intermetallic compounds in Al-Ti-Si-W alloys included titanium aluminide, titanium silicide, and ternary alloys (AlxTiy, TixSiy, and TixAly,Siz), whereas W was embedded in the Al-Ti matrix as a single phase. The phase composition and grain size distribution were investigated using electron backscatter diffraction analysis, in which refined and uniform microstructures (less than 0.3 μm) were attributed to severe plastic deformation and rapid densification of the pre-alloyed powders. The mechanical properties were correlated with the Al content in the quaternary alloys; a high hardness of 1014.6 ±73.5 kg/mm2 was observed.

Abstract Neutron radiation exposure is one of the main challenges faced during space missions. There is a critical need for advanced lightweight radiation shielding materials. Two-dimensional (2D) boron nitride nanoplatelets (BNNP) are excellent candidates for polymer matrix nanofillers due to their superior neutron shielding and thermal and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the 2D material anisotropic behavior unlocks the potential for composite property tailoring. This study fabricated ultra-lightweight lamellar BNNP foams (density 0.05 g cm–3 and 97.5% porous) via freeze-drying processing. The neutron shielding effectiveness or mass absorption coefficient of the BNNP foams with walls perpendicular to the direction of the radiation source was 14.47 cm2 g–1, while that of the foam with parallel configuration was only 8.51 cm2 g–1. The orientation-dependent neutron radiation shielding properties were modeled using the Beer-Lambert law for porous composite materials. The BNNP foam in this study has the potential to benefit advanced tailorable radiation shielding technologies for future aerospace missions.

Abstract Background The Korean government seeks to balance work and family and alleviate low fertility by implementing a parental leave system. This study aimed to identify the impact of the parental leave system on childbirth among married working women in South Korea. Methods This study used three-year follow-up data from the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (2016, 2018, and 2020). The number of participants was 324 at baseline. Logistic regressions using a generalized estimating equation model were performed to examine the impact of parental leave on childbirth. Sub-analyses of covariates, childbirth support, and parental leave systems were conducted. Results Of workers covered by the parental leave system, 31.7% considered childbirth. Women covered by parental leave were 3.63 times more likely to plan childbirth (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.32–9.99). The tendency to plan childbirth was pronounced among those in their early 30s (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 7.20) and those who thought that having children was necessary (AOR, 4.30). Child planning was more influenced by leave support (AOR, 6.61) than subsidies. Conclusions Parental leave systems can have a positive impact on working married women’s childbirth plans. Although this system was effective in a group interested in childbirth, it did not create a fundamental child plan. Time support is more important than money concerning childbirth plans. The parental leave system had an impact on childbirth plan. Appropriate parenting policies can effectively increase the fertility rate.

Abstract Background Ultrasound imaging is the most frequently performed for the patients with chronic hepatitis or liver cirrhosis. However, ultrasound imaging is highly operator dependent and interpretation of ultrasound images is subjective, thus well-trained radiologist is required for evaluation. Automated classification of liver fibrosis could alleviate the shortage of skilled radiologist especially in low-to-middle income countries. The purposed of this study is to evaluate deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) for classifying the degree of liver fibrosis according to the METAVIR score using US images. Methods We used ultrasound (US) images from two tertiary university hospitals. A total of 7920 US images from 933 patients were used for training/validation of DCNNs. All patient were underwent liver biopsy or hepatectomy, and liver fibrosis was categorized based on pathology results using the METAVIR score. Five well-established DCNNs (VGGNet, ResNet, DenseNet, EfficientNet and ViT) was implemented to predict the METAVIR score. The performance of DCNNs for five-level (F0/F1/F2/F3/F4) classification was evaluated through area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) with 95% confidential interval, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratio. Results Similar mean AUC values were achieved for five models; VGGNet (0.96), ResNet (0.96), DenseNet (0.95), EfficientNet (0.96), and ViT (0.95). The same mean accuracy (0.94) and specificity values (0.96) were yielded for all models. In terms of sensitivity, EffcientNet achieved highest mean value (0.85) while the other models produced slightly lower values range from 0.82 to 0.84. Conclusion In this study, we demonstrated that DCNNs can classify the staging of liver fibrosis according to METAVIR score with high performance using conventional B-mode images. Among them, EfficientNET that have fewer parameters and computation cost produced highest performance. From the results, we believe that DCNNs based classification of liver fibrosis may allow fast and accurate diagnosis of liver fibrosis without needs of additional equipment for add-on test and may be powerful tool for supporting radiologists in clinical practice.

Background: The Korean government implemented financial incentives to enhance infection prevention and management within general hospital settings. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of infection control compensation on antibiotic usage using a controlled interrupted time series analysis. Methods: The main unit of analysis was 270,901 inpatient episodes extracted from the Korean National Health Insurance Service Cohort Database from 2013 to 2019. The 96-month period was examined before and after the intervention, which was set to September 1, 2017, by applying a 1-year lag time after the incentive was introduced. Segmented regression was used to estimate the effects of interventions in a controlled interrupted time series. Hospitals that received nationwide financial incentives for infection prevention and management were included in the analysis. The study’s primary outcome was the use of antibiotics based on the WHO Access, Watch, and Reserve (AWaRe) classification of antibiotics, and the secondary outcome was the number of days of antibiotic use as days of therapy (DOTs) per patient day (PD). Results: The probability of overall antibiotic use decreased between incentivized and unincentivized hospitals (odds ratio [OR], 0.922; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.859–1.000). The difference in level change in the use of third-generation cephalosporins (OR,0.894; 95% CI, 0.817–0.977) and carbapenem (OR,0.790; 95% CI, 0.630–0.992) was significantly reduced between incentivized and unincentivized hospitals. The difference in slope change on DOTs/PD of glycopeptides was − 0.005 DOT/PDs, and that of carbapenem was − 0.003 between incentivized and unincentivized hospitals. Conclusion: We observed that incentives for infection prevention and management have had a positive impact on some aspects of antibiotic usage. A partial decrease was observed in antibiotic use, accompanied by a modest reduction in DOTs/PD, particularly for antibiotics aimed at addressing multidrug-resistant pathogens. Further investigation is necessary to establish evidence for extending these incentives.

ObjectiveThis study aims to explore the association between types of stress and suicidal behaviors—ideation and attempts—among Korean adolescents in two distinct years: 2015 and 2020.MethodsData were acquired from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey conducted in 2015 and 2020. Participants’ desire for suicide was evaluated by asking questions about suicidal ideation and attempts, during the past year. Types of stress were divided into five categories: none, home, school, academic achievement, and appearance. Multiple logistic regression was used to investigate the association between variables of interest and dependent variables.ResultsAmong the 77,363 adolescents included in this study, 8.8% male and 13.2% female participants had seriously thought about committing suicide, and the rate of male and female participants who tried committing suicide was 1.6% and 2.5%, respectively. While every type of stress was highly associated with suicidal ideation, family and home types of stress had the highest odds ratio (OR), that was statistically significant for both sexes (Male: OR 3.81, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 2.81 to 5.15; Female: OR 3.64, 95% CI 2.42 to 5.50). Moreover, the OR increased in order of: appearance; academic achievement; school and friends; and family and home, compared to the group that perceived no stress. Suicidal attempts were statistically significant and higher in likelihood, only amongst the female group that experienced stress from family and home (OR 2.48, 95% CI 1.08 to 5.67). In comparison to year 2015, suicidal ideation and attempts decreased in year 2020, but participants experiencing stress from family and home had a higher tendency of attempting suicide, though not statistically significant, regardless of their sex (Male: OR 1.03, 95% CI 0.74 to 1.44; Female: OR 1.06, 95% CI 0.81 to 1.4).ConclusionAdolescents who experience stress from family and home, or school and friends, are more likely to think about suicide, or carry it out, as compared to those having different causes of stress.

In Korea, most drivers equip their vehicles with a black box camera, used to estimate the speed of the vehicle in case of traffic accidents such as car-to-car collisions, single-car accidents, and car-to-pedestrian accidents. Traditionally, speed estimation using the camera video has been done by using the distance between the road lane, surrounding structures, etc.However, when the following vehicle collides with a stationary leading vehicle or barrier, and no road lanes or structures are visible around the driving path in the black box camera video of the following vehicle, the speed of the following vehicle could be just estimated according the deformations on the collided vehicles or objects.Therefore, in this study, when a vehicle collision occurs, a virtual parallel line is drawn between the leading vehicle and the following vehicle in the black box camera image of the following vehicle and analyzed geometrically to estimate the distance and the speed of the following vehicle.After the vehicle collision experiment, the speed was estimated using the method proposed in this study using the captured black box video. As a result, it was confirmed that the accuracy was high when the collision speed was low. So The method proposed in this study is expected to be used to estimate collision speed in the cases of low impact speed in the rear end collisions.

BackgroundAs income and health are closely related, retirement is considered undesirable for health. Many studies have shown the association between pension and health, but no research has considered the association between contribution-based public pensions or their types and health. ObjectiveThis study investigates the association between the type of contributory public pension and depressive symptoms among older adults. MethodsWe analyzed the data of 4541 older adults who participated in the South Korea Welfare Panel Study (2014-2020). Depressive symptoms were measured using the 11-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. Public pensions in South Korea are classified into specific corporate pensions and national pensions. For subgroup analyses, pensioners were categorized according to the amount of pension received and the proportion of public pension over gross income. Analyses using generalized estimating equations were conducted for longitudinal data. Abstract To investigate the association between chemical markers (triglyceride, C-reactive protein (CRP), and inflammation markers) and perfusion markers (relative cerebral vascular reserve (rCVR)) with moyamoya disease progression and complication types. A total of 314 patients diagnosed with moyamoya disease were included. Triglyceride and CRP levels were assessed and categorized based on Korean guidelines for dyslipidemia and CDC/AHA guidelines, respectively. Perfusion markers were evaluated using Diamox SPECT. Cox proportional hazard analysis was performed to examine the relationship between these markers and disease progression, as well as complication types (ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and rCVR deterioration). Elevated triglyceride levels (≥ 200) were significantly associated with higher likelihood of end-point events (HR: 2.292, CI 1.00–4.979, P = 0.03). Severe decreased rCVR findings on Diamox SPECT were also significantly associated with end-point events (HR: 3.431, CI 1.254–9.389, P = 0.02). Increased CRP levels and white blood cell (WBC) count were significantly associated with moyamoya disease progression. For hemorrhagic stroke, higher triglyceride levels were significantly associated with end-point events (HR: 5.180, CI 1.355–19.801, P = 0.02). Abstract Internet use disorder (IUD) is an emerging social and mental health concern. This study aimed to analyze the relative risk of IUD in late childhood among children whose mothers experienced peripartum depressive symptoms. This study included 762 participants (397 boys and 365 girls) and was conducted in 2017 (aged 9) and 2019 (aged 11). We analyzed the adjusted relative risk of being at high risk for IUD based on whether the mother experienced depressive symptoms during pregnancy or one month after delivery. We also considered the persistence of depressed mood for 4 months after delivery and the severity of peripartum depressive symptoms. From 2017, 20.7% of boys and 14.0% of girls were at high risk of developing IUD. Compared to the non-peripartum depressive group, girls whose mothers experienced peripartum depressive symptoms and those that persisted for 4 months were 1.084 and 1.124 times more likely to be at high risk of IUD (95% confidence interval = 1.005–1.170 and 1.013–1.248), respectively. There were no statistically significant differences among boys. Peripartum depressed mood could be one of risk factors of IUD. IUD needs to be monitored in children whose mothers experienced peripartum depressive symptoms.

Abstract Purpose To develop an ethical and cultural infrastructure for Life-Sustaining Treatment (LST) plan, it is crucial to carefully analyze its impact and ensure that healthcare utilization is maintained at an appropriate level, avoiding excessive medical interventions. This study aims to investigate the effects of LST decisions on both healthcare expenditure and utilization. Methods This cohort study utilized claims data from the National Health Insurance Service, encompassing all medical claims in South Korea. We included individuals who had planned to withdraw or withhold their LST between January and December 2018, identified by claim code IA71, IA72, IA73. We followed a total of 28,295 participants with documented LST plan who were deceased by June 2020. Participants were categorized into LST withdrawal / withholding and LST continuation groups. The dependent variables were healthcare expenditure and utilization. We construct a generalized linear model to analyze the association between these variables. Results Out of the 28,295 participants, 24,436 (86.4%) chose to withdraw or withhold LST, while the rest opted for its continuation. Compared to the LST continuation group, those who chose to withdraw or withhold LST had 0.91 times lower odds for total cost. Additionally, they experienced 0.91 times fewer hospitalization days and 0.92 times fewer outpatient visits than those in the LST continuation group. Conclusion Healthcare expenditure and utilization deceased among those choosing to withdraw or withhold LST compared to those continuing it. These findings underscore the significance of patients actively participating in decision regarding their treatment to ensure appropriate levels of medical intervention for LST. Furthermore, they emphasize the critical role of proper education and the establishment of a cultural framework for LST plans.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effects of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) on major adverse cardiac events (MACE) among patients who underwent PCI procedure. We used data from the electronic medical records (EMR) of a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea, from January 2014 to February 2020. Data from 2988 patients who had experienced their first acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were included during the study period. we classified patients into CR participants and non-participants based on their participation in the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program within 30 days after discharge. And the outcome was the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke within 1 year after discharge. The association between participation in CR and risk of developing MACE was evaluated using the Cox proportional hazards model. Patients who achieved CR after undergoing PCI were at a lower risk of developing MI (HR 0.68, CI 0.53–0.86). There was no significant association between participation in CR and the incidence of stroke. Among patients who had more than three stenotic vessels, the risk of developing MI within 1 year of discharge was reduced in CR users compared to non-users (3 or more stenosis vessels: HR 0.55, CI 0.35–0.86). Among patients who used two and more stents during PCI procedures, the risk of developing MI within 1 year of discharge was reduced in CR users compared to non-users (2 and more stents: HR 0.54, CI 0.35–0.85). Among people diagnosed with ACS and receiving PCI, patients who participated in CR within one month of discharge reduced risk of developing MI. Our study reinforced the current evidence on the effect of CR among patients receiving PCI and presented the expansion and enhancement of the CR program.

Abstract Background In 2011, Korean Neuropsychiatric Association renamed schizophrenia from ‘mind split disorder’ (‘Jungshinbunyeolbyung’ in Korean) to ‘attunement disorder’ (‘Johyeonbyung’ in Korean), in a strategic way to reduce social stigma toward people with schizophrenia. However, there remains an elusive consensus that how the renaming effort has contributed to changes in the social perception of schizophrenia in Korea. Methods With this regard, we explored whether media frames alter the social perception, in ways of respecting or disrespecting schizophrenia patients before and after the renaming. This study extensively investigated media keywords related to schizophrenia across the time by applying both language and epidemiologic analyses. Results In results, the media keywords have been negatively described for schizophrenia patients both before and after the renaming. Further, from an analysis using the regression model, a significant correlation was observed between the frequency of negative keywords and the hospitalization frequency of schizophrenia patients. Conclusions These findings suggest that the social perception of schizophrenia has been scarcely changed, but rather remained negatively biased against schizophrenia patients, in spite of the renaming effort. Notably, the biased media frames have been demonstrated to negatively impact on the social perception, and even on the medical use patterns of general schizophrenia patients. In conclusion, we suggest that the unbiased media frames along with the renaming effort may collectively help reduce the negative social perception of schizophrenia. Background: Although bee venom (BV) has clinical benefits in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, it has not been tested as treatment for gouty arthritis. Moreover, in vitro, BV has been proven to exhibit anti-inflammatory and positive effects on osteoarthritis, but only limited evidence can confirm its beneficial effects on gout. Thus, this study aims to assess the anti-inflammatory effects of BV on monosodium urate (MSU)-induced THP-1 monocytes. Methods: THP-1 monocytes were differentiated into mature macrophages using phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and pretreated for 6 hours with BV and a Caspase-1 inhibitor in a physiologically achievable range of concentrations (BV, 0.1–1 μg/mL; Caspase-1 inhibitor, 1–10 μM), followed by MSU crystal stimulation for 24 hours. The secretions of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-6, IL-8, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and nitric oxide (NO) were increased in the MSU crystal-stimulated THP-1 cells. Results: Caspase-1 inhibitors suppressed the production of all mediators in a dose-dependent manner. BV worked on equal terms with Caspase-1 inhibitors and showed more satisfactory effects on TNF-α, PGE2, COX-2, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Moreover, the western blot analysis revealed that BV regulated the transcriptional levels of these mediators via the suppression of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway activation. Conclusion: The results of the present study clearly suggest that BV inhibits MSU-induced inflammation in vitro, suggesting a possible role for BV in gout treatment.

Abstract Background Smoking is a major risk factor that significantly affects public health. Although the South Korean government spends significant money on smoking cessation services, the smoking rate remains stagnant. Families influence health-conscious decisions, and family meals can positively affect smoking suppression and health behaviors. Therefore, this study investigated whether family meals are correlated with adults’ smoking behaviors. Methods This study used data from the 2019–2021 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Having a meal together with family was defined as “yes” for those who have at least one meal with their family each day and “no” for those who do not. Current smoking status was classified as having smoked at least 5 packs of cigarettes (100 cigarettes) in one’s lifetime and having used either conventional cigarettes or e-cigarettes in the last 30 days. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to examine the association between eating together, smoking, and weight application. Results When comparing the group that ate with their family compared to the group that did not, the odds ratio for current smoking status was 1.27 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05–1.54) for male participants and 1.90 (95% CI: 1.33–2.71) for female participants. This showed a dose-dependent effect according to the frequency of family meals. Those who smoked conventional cigarettes had a strong association (men: OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.00–1.67; women: OR 2.22, 95% CI 1.42–3.46). However, those who only vaped e-cigarettes or used both conventional cigarettes and e-cigarettes had no statistically significant correlations. Conclusion This study provides evidence suggesting that eating meals as a family is related to smoking behavior and can positively affect smoking cessation intentions in adults. Consequently, a smoking cessation program can be developed that uses social support, such as encouraging family meals.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) patients are at high risk of stroke with ∼90% clots originating from the left atrial appendage (LAA). Clinical understanding of blood-flow based parameters and their potential association with stroke for AF patients remains poorly understood. We hypothesize that slow blood-flow either in the LA or the LAA could lead to the formation of blood clots and is associated with stroke for AF patients. Methods: We retrospectively collected cardiac CT images of paroxysmal AF patients and dichotomized them based on clinical event of previous embolic event into stroke and non-stroke groups. After image segmentation to obtain 3D LA geometry, patient-specific blood-flow analysis was performed to model LA hemodynamics. In terms of geometry, we calculated area of the pulmonary veins (PVs), mitral valve, LA and LAA, orifice area of LAA and volumes of LA and LAA and classified LAA morphologies. For hemodynamic assessment, we quantified blood flow velocity, wall shear stress (WSS, blood-friction on LA wall), oscillatory shear index (OSI, directional change of WSS) and endothelial cell activation potential (ECAP, ratio of OSI and WSS quantifying slow and oscillatory flow) in the LA as well as the LAA. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the parameters between the groups. Results: Twenty-seven patients were included in the stroke and 28 in the non-stroke group. Examining geometrical parameters, area of left inferior PV was found to be significantly higher in the stroke group as compared to non-stroke group (p = 0.026). In terms of hemodynamics, stroke group had significantly lower blood velocity (p = 0.027), WSS (p = 0.018) and higher ECAP (p = 0.032) in the LAA as compared to non-stroke group. However, LAA morphologic type did not differ between the two groups. This suggests that stroke patients had significantly slow and oscillatory circulating blood-flow in the LAA, which might expose it to potential thrombogenesis. Conclusion: Slow flow in the LAA alone was associated with stroke in this paroxysmal AF cohort. Patient-specific blood-flow analysis can potentially identify such hemodynamic conditions, aiding in clinical stroke risk stratification of AF patients.

Background Since 2017, the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program in Korea has been included in the coverage provided by the National Health Insurance to alleviate financial burden. Our study aimed to identify changes in the CR program use according to the implementation of CR coverage. Methods and Results We obtained data from the electronic medical records of a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea from January 2014 to February 2020. Data from 2988 patients with acute coronary syndrome who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention were included. To examine the CR use trend among patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, the electronic medical records data of the patients were aggregated quarterly, resulting in a maximum of 24 repeated measures for each patient. Segmented regression is often used to estimate the effects of interventions in an interrupted time series. Policy implementation led to a prompt increase in the probability of CR use (odds ratio [OR], 3.99 [95% CI, 2.89–5.51]). After the implementation of CR coverage, no significant change in CR use (OR, 0.97 [95% CI, 0.92–1.01]) was observed. After percutaneous coronary intervention, more patients opted for CR, especially those receiving education compared with exercise (education: OR, 87.44 [95% CI, 36.79–207.83] versus exercise: OR, 1.99 [95% CI, 1.43–2.76]). Conclusions The implementation of CR coverage resulted in a rapid increase in the probability of CR use. Use of the educational program was higher than that of the exercise program. Given the persistently low use of CR, it is imperative to stimulate its adoption by increasing its availability.

Abstract Objective Accurate correction is a prerequisite for the favorable outcomes of open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO). However, previous studies have reported disappointing results regarding correction accuracy despite the use of intra-operative navigation, which implies that a certain factor other than bony components is involved in the inaccurate correction (mainly overcorrection). The joint-line convergence angle (JLCA) can represent soft tissue effects in OWHTO. This study tried to determine whether the postoperative change in the JLCA (∆JLCA) led to inaccurate correction. Abstract Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with the development of dementia; however, the association of dementia risk with overall stress-related disorders is less known. This study investigated the association between stress-related disorders and the risk of dementia in a Korean nationwide sample cohort. The data analyzed in this study were acquired from the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort between 2002 and 2013. Using a 1:3 propensity score matching, 8906 patients with stress-related disorders and 26,718 control participants were included in the analysis. Patients with stress-related disorders had a higher risk of developing dementia after adjusting for covariates (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.15; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.30) than control participants. Patients with PTSD showed the highest risk of increase (HR = 1.78) than those with other types of stress-related disorders. Patients with stress-related disorders showed the highest and significantly increased risk for Alzheimer’s dementia (HR = 1.22, 95% CI 1.04–1.56). These results indicated an association between a history of stress-related disorders and the risk of dementia in the South Korean population. Further research investigating the causal mechanisms is needed.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) as an antioxidant on busulfaninduced testicular dysfunction in mice and elucidate its possible mechanism of action. Materials and Methods: Thirty-two C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided into four groups (n=8/group) as follows: (1) control group (oral administration of saline [0.1 mL daily] for 35 days); (2) NAC group (oral administration of NAC [10 mg/kg daily] for 35 days); (3) busulfan group (double intraperitoneal injections of 20 mg/kg; total dose of 40 mg/kg); and (4) busulfan+NAC group (after double intraperitoneal injections of 20 mg/kg; total dose of 40 mg/kg, NAC administration [10 mg/kg daily] for 35 days). The testes were removed, weighed, and subjected to sperm parameter analysis and morphology assessment. Reproductive hormone, serum/testicular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, oxidative stress and antioxidant markers were evaluated. The testicular expression of Nrf2 and HO-1 was examined using RT-qPCR. Results: Busulfan treatment significantly decreased testicular weight, sperm count, and serum testosterone levels. Atrophy and degeneration of germinal epithelium were observed in the busulfan group. NAC administration after busulfan treatment partially attenuated the deterioration of testis weight, sperm quality, serum hormones, histomorphometric changes, and oxidative and antioxidative status. NAC treatment resulted in a considerable improvement in Nrf2 and HO-1 mRNA expression levels. Conclusions: This study provides compelling evidence that NAC as a potent antioxidant has significant protective effects against busulfan-induced male reproductive impairment possibly through modification of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.

Abstract Background Cancer survival rates are increasing; however, studies on dyslipidemia as a comorbidity of cancer are limited. For efficient management of the disease burden, this study aimed to understand new-onset dyslipidemia in medically underserved areas (MUA) among cancer survivors > 19 years. Methods This study used 11-year (2009–2019) data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service sample cohort. Cancer survivors for five years or more (diagnosed with ICD-10 codes ‘C00-C97’) > 19 years were matched for sex, age, cancer type, and survival years using a 1:1 ratio with propensity scores. New-onset dyslipidemia outpatients based on MUA were analyzed using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results Of the 5,736 cancer survivors included in the study, the number of new-onset dyslipidemia patients was 855 in MUA and 781 in non-MUA. Cancer survivors for five years or more from MUA had a 1.22-fold higher risk of onset of dyslipidemia (95% CI = 1.10–1.34) than patients from non-MUA. The prominent factors for the risk of dyslipidemia in MUA include women, age ≥ 80 years, high income, disability, complications, and fifth-year cancer survivors. Conclusions Cancer survivors for five years or more from MUA had a higher risk of new-onset dyslipidemia than those from non-MUA. Thus, cancer survivors for five years or more living in MUA require healthcare to prevent and alleviate dyslipidemia.

Abstract Collagen, a major structural protein in mammalian tissues, is effective against skin wounds and osteoarthritis. Although bovine and porcine collagens have mainly been used, several potential risks of mammalian collagen have led to the use of fish collagen (FC) as an alternative. FC and its peptides are used as common cosmeceutical products because of their antihypertensive, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant activities. Despite the effects of FC on wrinkle reduction, UV-protection, and wound healing, the relationship between FC and atopic dermatitis (AD) has not yet been reported. Therefore, we investigated the anti-AD effects of FC against house dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae, HDM)-induced AD in NC/Nga mice and TNF-α/IFN-γ-stimulated HaCaT keratinocytes. FC alleviated AD apparent symptoms, such as dermatitis score, transepidermal water loss, epidermal thickness, and mast cell infiltration upon declining pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators, IL-6, IL-5, IL-13, TSLP, and TNF-α. The skin barrier protein, filaggrin, was also recovered by FC administration in vivo and in vitro. Immune response and skin barrier dysfunction are both mitigated by three routes of FC administration: oral, topical, and both routes via the regulation of IκB, MAPKs, and STATs pathways. In summary, FC could be a potential therapeutic agent for AD by regulating immune balance and skin barrier function.

Abstract Background The workplace experiences of employees can impact their mental health. Depressive symptoms, which are experienced by workers, are a mental health issue that deserves attention. Several studies have evaluated physical activity to prevent possible depression in workers in a work environment, however, research on physical activity and depression symptoms directly related to work is still insufficient. Background: The incidence of facial palsy has been increasing. Many patients consult both Korean and Western physicians; however, no critical pathway (CP) for facial palsy has been established based on integrated medicine including Korean medicine, Western medicine, and complementary and alternative medicine. Thus, we developed and implemented an integrated CP for patients with acute facial palsy and investigated the satisfaction with CP. Methods: Overall, 20 patients who received treatment following the CP and 20 medical staff members involved in their care responded to a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was developed based on a review of previous studies and focused on the satisfaction with the CP. Results: Patients’ satisfaction score with the integrated CP was ≥ 4.4 for all items using a 5-point Likert-type scale. Smooth and cooperative treatment procedures, time-saving practices, and a clear explanation of the integrated treatment plan were satisfactory factors. Additionally, they preferred incorporating specialized facial massage and receiving education on self-exercise or massage techniques as complementary therapies. The medical staff members expressed a high level of satisfaction with the CP; however, the work division and treatment guidelines must be improved. Conclusion: An integrated CP program for acute facial palsy was implemented, and the satisfaction levels of patients and medical staff members were assessed. The results revealed high levels of satisfaction, and several improvements identified will be incorporated into clinical practice going forward.

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is known to be effective in regenerating tissues, and bimatoprost, an analog of PGF2α, has been approved by the FDA as an eyelash growth promoter and has been proven effective in human hair follicles. Thus, to enhance PGE2 levels while improving hair loss, we found dihydroisoquinolinone piperidinylcarboxy pyrazolopyridine (DPP), an inhibitor of 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase (15-PGDH), using DeepZema®, an AI-based drug development program. Here, we investigated whether DPP improved hair loss in human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) damaged by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which causes hair loss. We found that DPP enhanced wound healing and the expression level of alkaline phosphatase in DHT-damaged HFDPCs. We observed that DPP significantly down-regulated the generation of reactive oxygen species caused by DHT. DPP recovered the mitochondrial membrane potential in DHT-damaged HFDPCs. We demonstrated that DPP significantly increased the phosphorylation levels of the AKT/ERK and activated Wnt signaling pathways in DHT-damaged HFDPCs. We also revealed that DPP significantly enhanced the size of the three-dimensional spheroid in DHT-damaged HFDPCs and increased hair growth in ex vivo human hair follicle organ culture. These data suggest that DPP exhibits beneficial effects on DHT-damaged HFDPCs and can be utilized as a promising agent for improving hair loss.

Background: Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is a crucial treatment for end-stage renal disease, with pre-emptive LDKT (transplantation before dialysis initiation) offering significant benefits in graft function and patient survival. The selection of a vasopressor during LDKT, particularly between norepinephrine and dopamine, and its impact on renal arterial hemodynamics measured using the renal arterial resistive index (RARI) is poorly understood. Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study enrolled 347 eligible pre-emptive LDKT recipients from the Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital between January 2019 and June 2023. Utilizing propensity score matching (PSM), the patients were categorized into dopamine and norepinephrine groups to compare the effects of these vasopressors on the intraoperative RARI, postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and hourly urine output. The RARI was measured via the Doppler ultrasonography of the renal hilum and parenchyma post-graft vascular and ureteral anastomoses. Results: The preoperative differences in the recipients’ and donors’ characteristics were mitigated following PSM. The dopamine group exhibited higher intraoperative RARI values at the renal hilum (0.77 ± 0.11 vs. 0.66 ± 0.13, p < 0.001) and parenchyma (0.71 ± 0.1 vs. 0.6 ± 0.1, p < 0.001) compared to those of the norepinephrine group. However, these differences were not statistically significant on postoperative day 7. The norepinephrine infusion adjusted for the propensity scores was associated with significantly lower odds of an RARI > 0.8 (hilum: OR = 0.214, 95% CI = 0.12–0.382, p < 0.001; parenchyma: OR = 0.1, 95% CI = 0.029–0.348, p < 0.001). The early postoperative outcomes showed a higher eGFR (day 1: 30.0 ± 13.3 vs. 25.1 ± 17.4 mL/min/1.73 m2, p = 0.004) and hourly urine output (day 1: 41.8 ± 16.9 vs. 36.5 ± 14.4 mL/kg/h, p = 0.002) in the norepinephrine group. Furthermore, the long-term outcomes were comparable between the groups. Conclusions: Norepinephrine infusion during pre-emptive LDKT is associated with more favorable intraoperative renal arterial hemodynamics, as evidenced by a lower RARI and improved early postoperative renal function compared to those of dopamine. These findings suggest a potential preferential role for norepinephrine in optimizing perioperative management and early graft functions in LDKT recipients. Given the retrospective nature of this study, further prospective studies are needed to confirm these observations. Additionally, the study limitations include the potential for unmeasured confounding factors and the inability to determine causality due to its observational design.

A 9-year-old castrated male Schnauzer dog, weighing 11.6 kg, presented with a persistent hemorrhagic oral mass. An oral examination revealed a right maxillary oral mass characterized by continuous bleeding, halitosis, and severe pain. A cytological examination led to a provisional diagnosis of malignant melanoma, and, despite the option of aggressive surgery, the owner declined. The blood analysis indicated severe hemorrhagic anemia (hematocrit, 18.2%) requiring a blood transfusion. The patient underwent volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) as part of a palliative radiation protocol, receiving six fractions of 6 Gy weekly for hemostasis and clinical improvement. The hemorrhaging ceased after the second fraction, with a subsequent rise in the hematocrit levels and the resolution of the anemia. Additionally, the intake increased following the second fraction, and effective pain management was achieved in the fourth fraction. Following the last fraction, computed tomography revealed a 20% reduction in the tumor size. This case highlights the potential use of radiotherapy for hemostasis in cases of inoperable hemorrhagic oral melanoma and represents the first report on the application of hemostatic radiotherapy in dogs.

In this paper, a nonlinear simulation block for a fish robot was designed using MATLAB Simulink. The simulation block incorporated added masses, hydrodynamic damping forces, restoring forces, and forces and moments due to dorsal fins, pectoral fins, and caudal fins into six-degree-of-freedom equations of motion. To obtain a linearized model, we used three different nominal surge velocities (i.e., 0.2 m/s, 0.4 m/s, and 0.6 m/s). After obtaining output responses by applying pseudo-random binary signal inputs to a nonlinear model, an identification tool was used to obtain approximated linear models between inputs and outputs. Utilizing the obtained linearized models, two-degree-of-freedom proportional, integral, and derivative controllers were designed, and their characteristics were analyzed. For the 0.4 m/s nominal surge velocity models, the gain margins and phase margins of the surge, pitch, and yaw controllers were infinity and 69 degrees, 26.3 dB and 85 degrees, and infinity and 69 degrees, respectively. The bandwidths of surge, pitch, and yaw control loops were determined to be 2.3 rad/s, 0.17 rad/s, and 2.0 rad/s, respectively. Similar characteristics were observed when controllers designed for linear models were applied to the nonlinear model. When step inputs were applied to the nonlinear model, the maximum overshoot and steady-state errors were very small. It was also found that the nonlinear plant with three different nominal surge velocities could be controlled by a single controller designed for a linear model with a nominal surge velocity of 0.4 m/s. Therefore, controllers designed using linear approximation models are expected to work well with an actual nonlinear model.
