Abstract This study aimed to assess the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in patients with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) by analyzing changes in visual acuity (VA) and enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography (EDI-OCT) parameters. A comparative retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the medical records of all HBO-treated RAO patients in our department and comparing them with matched RAO patients who did not receive HBO treatment. All patients treated with HBO received treatment within 7 days of the onset of visual symptoms. Baseline characteristics were compared, and VA and OCT parameters were evaluated at baseline and follow-up visits. A total of 50 eyes from 50 patients were included, with 29 eyes in the HBOT group and 21 eyes in the control group. Abstract Subconjunctival hemorrhage (SCH) is a benign eye condition that is often noticeable and leads to medical attention. Despite previous studies investigating the relationship between SCH and cardiovascular diseases, the relationship between SCH and bleeding disorders remains controversial. In order to gain further insight into this association, a nationwide cohort study was conducted using data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort version 2.0 from 2006 to 2015. The study defined SCH using a diagnostic code and compared the incidence and risk factors of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in 36,772 SCH individuals and 147,088 propensity score (PS)-matched controls without SCH. The results showed that SCH was associated with a lower risk of ICH (HR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.622–0.894, p = 0.002) and GI bleeding (HR = 0.816, 95% CI = 0.690–0.965, p = 0.018) when compared to the PS-matched control group. This reduced risk was more pronounced in females and in the older age group (≥ 50 years), but not observed in males or younger age groups. In conclusion, SCH dose not increase the risk of ICH and major GI bleeding and is associated with a decreased incidence in females and individuals aged ≥ 50 years.

AIM: To evaluate visual outcomes and changes in fluid after administering monthly anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) injections to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) with subretinal fluid (SRF) and pigment epithelial detachment (PED). METHODS: This prospective study included eyes with nAMD previously treated with as-needed anti-VEGF injections. The patients were treated with six monthly intravitreal injections of ranibizumab. Quantitative volumetric segmentation analyses of the SRF and PED were performed. The main outcome measures included best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and SRF and PED volumes. RESULTS: Twenty eyes of 20 patients were included in this study. At the 6-month follow-up, BCVA and PED volume did not change significantly (P=0.110 and 0.999, respectively) but the mean SRF volume decreased from 0.53±0.82 mm3 at baseline to 0.08±0.23 mm3 (P=0.002). The absorption rate of the SRF volume was negatively correlated with the duration of previous anti-VEGF treatment (P=0.029). Seven of the 20 eyes (35%) showed a fluid-free macula and significant improvement in BCVA (P=0.036) by month 6. CONCLUSION: Quantifying the SRF can precisely determine the patient's responsiveness to anti-VEGF treatment of nAMD.

Antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment is still used intravitreally worldwide for various neovascular diseases, despite other available, approved treatments. We performed a systematic search of the literature focused on visual physiology studies. We used the online biomedical search engine PubMed and searched key words including “M-chart,” “Preferential Hyperacuity Perimetry,” “microperimetry,” (MP) “electroretinography,” and “contrast sensitivity” to estimate treatment efficacy of anti-VEGF treatments in a quantitative manner. Many studies were identified which used a variety of methodologies, disease entities, injected agents, and patient populations, making it difficult to obtain a direct comparison of their results. However, favorable functional outcomes achieved using current quantitative methods would lend further confidence to the effectiveness of a treat-and-extend protocol using intravitreal anti-VEGF for the management of patients with neovascular diseases. Despite anti-VEGF's wide use, a well-designed longitudinal multicenter study to systematically evaluate and compare different physiological methods or parameters in patients with neovascular diseases is still lacking, though it would benefit therapeutic decisions.

Vertebral arterial injury (VAI) remains a fatal complication of C1-C2 posterior screw fixation. Herein, we report asymptomatic bilateral VAI that was caused by screws following C1-C2 posterior fixation. A 34-year-old woman with cerebral palsy experienced quadriplegia after a fall. Cervical computed tomography (CT) showed increased ADI, with os odontoideum, for which C1 pedicle screw and C2 pedicle–lamina screw fixation were performed. Cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) conducted for postoperative weakness in shoulder elevation demonstrated a well-decompressed spinal cord. However, neck CT angiography revealed bilateral vertebral artery (VA) violations by the C1 pedicle screw that induced occlusion of the V2 and V3 segments of both VA, with intact V4 segments. Diffusionweighted imaging showed no evidence of infarction. Cerebral angiography showed reconstitution of posterior circulation via the left fetal posterior communicating artery. Steroid treatment-induced improvement in shoulder elevation to the preoperative level, and no neurological deterioration has been detected for 3 years postoperatively. Prevention of VAI is one of the most important objectives when performing posterior cervical screw fixation. The screw should be inserted considering the rotation of C1 and C2. Notably, variations in cerebral circulation, which enable collateral blood flow to the posterior circulation, can lead to different sequelae in patients with iatrogenic VAI.

Purpose To assess the usefulness of various metal artifact reduction (MAR) methods in patients with hip prostheses. Materials and Methods This retrospective study included 47 consecutive patients who underwent hip arthroplasty and dual-energy CT. Conventional polyenergetic image (CI), orthopedic-MAR (OMAR), and virtual monoenergetic image (VMI, 50–200 keV) were tested for MAR. Quantitative analysis was performed in seven regions around the prostheses. Qualitative assessments included evaluation of the degree of artifacts and the presence of secondary artifacts. Results The lowest amount of image noise was observed in the O-MAR, followed by the VMI. O-MAR also showed the lowest artifact index, followed by high-keV VMI in the range of 120–200 keV (soft tissue) or 200 keV (bone). O-MAR had the highest contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) in regions with severe hypodense artifacts, while VMI had the highest CNR in other regions, including the periprosthetic bone. On assessment of the CI of pelvic soft tissues, VMI showed a higher structural similarity than O-MAR. Upon qualitative analysis, metal artifacts were significantly reduced in O-MAR, followed by that in VMI, while secondary artifacts were the most frequently found in the O-MAR (p < 0.001). Conclusion O-MAR is the best technique for severe MAR, but it can generate secondary artifacts. VMI at high keV can be advantageous for evaluating periprosthetic bone.

The cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system is a demonstration device capable of generating high-power millimeter electromagnetic waves of a specific wavelength and observing their effects on living organisms. It irradiates a biological sample placed in a 30 × 30 × 50 cm3 cell with electromagnetic waves in the 3.15-mm-wavelength region (with an output of ≥1 W) and analyzes the temperature change of the sample. A vacuum electronic device-based coupled-cavity backward-wave oscillator converts the electron energy of the electron beam into radiofrequency (RF) energy and radiates it to the target through an antenna, increasing the temperature through the absorption of RF energy in the skin. The system causes pain and ultimately reduces combat power. A cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system consisting of four parts—an electromagnetic-wave generator, a high-voltage power supply, a test cell, and a system controller—generates an RF signal of ≥1 W in a continuous waveform at a 95-GHz center frequency, as well as a chemical solution with a dielectric constant similar to that of the skin of a living organism. An increase of 5 °C lasting approximately 10 s was confirmed through an experiment.

Abstract Background Colloid cyst (CC) is a rare and benign cyst found in the third ventricle near the foramen of Monro. Although the role of surgical resection is well established in symptomatic large-sized CC, it remains debatable whether surgical removal of CC with no symptoms or minimal symptoms is necessary. Case presentation A 49-year-old male patient visited our institute for incidentally detected intracranial mass. MRI demonstrated typical, 12 mm-sized CC located in the third ventricle. It was noticed that the cyst spontaneously decreased in size from 12 mm to 4 mm on MRI at 18 months after the first visit. Conclusion Although spontaneous regression is a very rare phenomenon in CC, regular imaging study and frequent neurologic examination can be an alternative option for well-selected, asymptomatic cases.

Abstract Tendons have limited reparative ability and perform a relatively simple mechanical function via the extracellular matrix. Thus, the injured tendon might be treated successfully by stem cell transplantation. We performed a randomized, controlled study to investigate the effects of mesenchymal stem cell injection for treating partial tears in the supraspinatus tendon. We enrolled 24 patients with shoulder pain lasting more than 3 months and partial tears in the supraspinatus tendon. Participants were assigned to three groups: stem cells in fibrin glue, normal saline/fibrin glue mixture, and normal saline only, with which intra-lesional injection was performed. Pain at activity and rest, shoulder function and tear size were evaluated. For safety measures, laboratory tests were taken and adverse events were recorded at every visit. Participants were followed up at 6, 12 weeks, 6, 12 months and 2 years after injection. The primary outcome measure was the improvement in pain at activity at 3 months after injection. Twenty-three patients were included in the final analysis. Primary outcome did not differ among groups (p = 0.35). A mixed effect model revealed no statistically significant interactions. Only time significantly predicted the outcome measure. All participants reported transient pain at the injection site. There were no differences in post-injection pain duration or severity. Safety measures did not differ between groups, and there were no persistent adverse events. Stem cell injection into supraspinatus partial tears in patients with shoulder pain lasting more than 3 months was not more effective than control injections. Background & Aims: Sphingosine 1-phosphate receptors (S1PRs) are a group of G-protein–coupled receptors that confer a broad range of functional effects in chronic inflammatory and metabolic diseases. S1PRs also may mediate the development of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), but the specific subtypes involved and the mechanism of action are unclear. Methods: We investigated which type of S1PR isoforms is activated in various murine models of NASH. The mechanism of action of S1PR4 was examined in hepatic macrophages isolated from high-fat, high-cholesterol diet (HFHCD)-fed mice. We developed a selective S1PR4 functional antagonist by screening the fingolimod (2-amino-2-[2-(4- n -octylphenyl)ethyl]-1,3- propanediol hydrochloride)-like sphingolipid-focused library. Results: The livers of various mouse models of NASH as well as hepatic macrophages showed high expression of S1pr4. Moreover, in a cohort of NASH patients, expression of S1PR4 was 6-fold higher than those of healthy controls. S1pr4+/- mice were protected from HFHCD-induced NASH and hepatic fibrosis without changes in steatosis. S1pr4 depletion in hepatic macrophages inhibited lipopolysaccharide-mediated Ca++ release and deactivated the Nod-like receptor pyrin domain-containning protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. S1P increased the expression of S1pr4 in hepatic macrophages and activated NLRP3 inflammasome through inositol trisphosphate/inositol trisphosphate–receptor–dependent [Ca++] signaling. To further clarify the biological function of S1PR4, we developed SLB736, a novel selective functional antagonist of SIPR4. Similar to S1pr4+/- mice, administration of SLB736 to HFHCD-fed mice prevented the development of NASH and hepatic fibrosis, but not steatosis, by deactivating the NLRP3 inflammasome. Conclusions: S1PR4 may be a new therapeutic target for NASH that mediates the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in hepatic macrophages.

The objective of the present study was to investigate some transition metal nitride to determine the relationship between microstructural evolution and mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion strength of the hard coating. Results showed that it was possible to form nano-scale multilayers of Ti(CuNiZr)N/AlCr(SiW)N with chemical fluctuation of Ti-rich and Al-rich nitrides. It was believed that these nano-scale multilayers with chemical fluctuation could form during table rotation of the arc ion plating process, causing difference in mean free path of chemical elements from the target. Microstructural investigation confirmed that the multilayer consisted of three layers with nanostructured periodic stripe patterns on the multilayer coating based on detailed individual layers analysis. Furthermore, Ti(CuNiZr)N/AlCr(SiW)N multilayer showed mechanical properties, including hardness of 36.0 ± 3 GPa and adhesion strength represented by the critical load of 93 ± 5 N with the highest H/E and H3/E2 ratios.

Abstract Background There is paucity of studies applying fat suppressed (FS) technique to T2 mapping to overcome chemical shift artifacts. The purpose of the study is to difference between FS T2 and conventional T2 mapping and reproducibility of FS T2 mapping in the femoral articular cartilage. Methods Eighteen patients who had normal-looking femoral cartilage and underwent knee MRI with conventional T2 and FS T2 mapping were included. T2 values of each mapping were measured by two readers independently from nine regions in the medial femoral condyle (MFC) and lateral femoral condyle (LFC). Each anatomical region was divided by lines at ± 10°, 30°, 50°, 70°, 90°, and 110°. Comparisons of T2 values between conventional and FS T2 mapping were statistically analyzed. The T2 values between FS and conventional T2 mapping in the anterior, central and posterior femoral condyles were compared. The aim of this study was to optimize the target, moderator, and collimator (TMC) in a neutron beam generator for the accelerator-based BNCT (A-BNCT) system. The optimization employed the Monte Carlo Neutron and Photon (MCNP) simulation. The optimal geometry for the target was decided as the one with the highest neutron flux among nominates, which were called as angled, rib, and tube in this study. The moderator was optimized in terms of consisting material to produce appropriate neutron energy distribution for the treatment. The optimization of the collimator, which wrapped around the target, was carried out by deciding the material to effectively prevent the leakage radiations. As results, characteristic of the neutron beam from the optimized TMC was compared to the recommendation by the International Atomic Energy Agent (IAEA). The tube type target showed the highest neutron flux among nominates. The optimal material for the moderator and collimator were combination of Fluental (Al203+AlF3) with 60Ni filter and lead, respectively. The optimized TMC satisfied the IAEA recommendations such as the minimum production rate of epithermal neutrons from thermal neutrons: that was 2.5 times higher. The results can be used as source terms for shielding designs of treatment rooms.

Objectives Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCs) are frequently diagnosed at the locoregional advanced stage (stage IVa), but controversy remains regarding whether stage IVa HSNCs should be treated with upfront surgery or definitive chemoradiation therapy (CRT). The purpose of this study was to compare overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with stage IVa HNSC treated primarily by surgery with curative intent with/without (neo)adjuvant treatment (surgery group) versus those treated primarily with CRT (CRT group). Methods We reviewed data of 1,033 patients with stage IVa HNSC treated with curative intent at 17 cancer centers between 2010 and 2016. Results Among 1,033 patients, 765 (74.1%) received upfront surgery and 268 (25.9%) received CRT. The 5-year OS and DFS rates were 64.4% and 62.0% in the surgery group and 49.5% and 45.4% in the CRT group, respectively. In multivariate analyses, OS and DFS were better in the surgery group than in the CRT group (odds ratio [OR] for death, 0.762; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.592–0.981; OR for recurrence, 0.628; 95% CI, 0.492–0.802). In subgroup analyses, the OS and DFS of patients with oropharyngeal cancer were better in the surgery group (OR for death, 0.548; 95% CI, 0.341–0.879; OR for recurrence, 0.598; 95% CI, 0.377–0.948). In the surgery group, patients with laryngeal cancer showed better OS (OR for death, 0.432; 95% CI, 0.211–0.882), while those with hypopharyngeal cancer DFS was improved (OR for recurrence, 0.506; 95% CI, 0.328–0.780). Conclusion A survival benefit from surgery may be achieved even in patients with stage IVa HNSC, particularly those with oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer. Surgery led to a reduction in the recurrence rate in patients with hypopharyngeal cancer.

Boron–neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a cancer treatment method that exploits the high neutron reactivity of boron. Monitoring the prompt gamma rays (PGs) produced during neutron irradiation is essential for ensuring the accuracy and safety of BNCT. We investigate the imaging of PGs produced by the boron–neutron capture reaction through Monte Carlo simulations of a gamma camera with a SrI2 scintillator and parallel-hole collimator. GAGG scintillator is also used for a comparison. The simulations allow the shapes of the energy spectra, which exhibit a peak at 478 keV, to be determined along with the PG images from a boron–water phantom. It is found that increasing the size of the water phantom results in a greater number of image counts and lower contrast. Additionally, a higher septal penetration ratio results in poorer image quality, and a SrI2 scintillator results in higher image contrast. Thus, we can simulate the BNCT process and obtain an energy spectrum with a reasonable shape, as well as suitable PG images. Both GAGG and SrI2 crystals are suitable for PG imaging during BNCT. However, for higher imaging quality, SrI2 and a collimator with a lower septal penetration ratio should be utilized.

BackgroundCeramides are associated with metabolic complications including diabetic nephropathy in patients with diabetes. Recent studies have reported that podocytes play a pivotal role in the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Also, mitochondrial dysfunction is known to be an early event in podocyte injury. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that ceramide accumulation in podocytes induces mitochondrial damage through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in patients with diabetic nephropathy.MethodsWe used Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats and high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. We fed the animals either a control- or a myriocin-containing diet to evaluate the effects of the ceramide. Also, we assessed the effects of ceramide on intracellular ROS generation and on podocyte autophagy in cultured podocytes.ResultsOLETF rats and HFD-fed mice showed albuminuria, histologic features of diabetic nephropathy, and podocyte injury, whereas myriocin treatment effectively treated these abnormalities. Cultured podocytes exposed to agents predicted to be risk factors (high glucose, high free fatty acid, and angiotensin II in combination [GFA]) showed an increase in ceramide accumulation and ROS generation in podocyte mitochondria. Pretreatment with myriocin reversed GFA-induced mitochondrial ROS generation and prevented cell death. Myriocin-pretreated cells were protected from GFA-induced disruption of mitochondrial integrity.ConclusionWe showed that mitochondrial ceramide accumulation may result in podocyte damage through ROS production. Therefore, this signaling pathway could become a pharmacological target to abate the development of diabetic kidney disease.

Objectives. Both acoustic and aerodynamic analyses are essential to evaluate the phonetic characteristics of voice pathology. The purpose of the study is to determine the magnitude of their correlation with the different types of bilabial plosive consonants. Methods. A controlled prospective study of 35 patients diagnosed with unilateral vocal fold paralysis was performed. The sustained vowel /a/ and bilabial voiceless consonants were used. Three common acoustic parameters were measured from a sustained vowel /a/ and aerodynamic parameters from a set of syllables /pi/, /phi/, and /p’i/. We determined the correlation coefficients between acoustic and aerodynamic measurements for the bilabial plosive consonants /pi/, /phi/, and /p’i/. Results. The mean values of acoustic parameters were higher than the thresholds of pathology. The mean values of aerodynamic parameters varied according to the types of consonants. The correlation between acoustic and aerodynamic parameters was significantly larger with the consonant /phi/ compared with the consonants /p’/ and /p/. The magnitudes of correlation were higher with the consonant /phi/ compared with the consonants /p’/ and /p/. Conclusion. The plosive consonant /phi/ may represent a more valuable investigative consonant than the consonants /p/ or /p’/ for aerodynamic analysis of voice pathology, especially in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

BackgroundA high false-negative rate has been reported for the diagnosis of ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) using plain radiography. We investigated whether deep learning (DL) can improve the diagnostic performance of radiologists for cervical OPLL using plain radiographs.Materials and methodsThe training set consisted of 915 radiographs from 207 patients diagnosed with OPLL. For the test set, we used 200 lateral cervical radiographs from 100 patients with cervical OPLL and 100 patients without OPLL. An observer performance study was conducted over two reading sessions. In the first session, we compared the diagnostic performance of the DL-model and the six observers. The diagnostic performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) at the vertebra and patient level. The sensitivity and specificity of the DL model and average observers were calculated in per-patient analysis. Subgroup analysis was performed according to the morphologic classification of OPLL. In the second session, observers evaluated the radiographs by referring to the results of the DL-model.ResultsIn the vertebra-level analysis, the DL-model showed an AUC of 0.854, which was higher than the average AUC of observers (0.826), but the difference was not significant (p = 0.292). In the patient-level analysis, the performance of the DL-model had an AUC of 0.851, and the average AUC of observers was 0.841 (p = 0.739). The patient-level sensitivity and specificity were 91% and 69% in the DL model, and 83% and 68% for the average observers, respectively. Both the DL-model and observers showed decreases in overall performance in the segmental and circumscribed types. With knowledge of the results of the DL-model, the average AUC of observers increased to 0.893 (p = 0.001) at the vertebra level and 0.911 (p < 0.001) at the patient level. In the subgroup analysis, the improvement was largest in segmental-type (AUC difference 0.087; p = 0.002).ConclusionsThe DL-based OPLL detection model can significantly improve the diagnostic performance of radiologists on cervical radiographs.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by excessive lipid accumulation and imbalances in lipid metabolism in the liver. Although nuclear receptors (NRs) play a crucial role in hepatic lipid metabolism, the underlying mechanisms of NR regulation in NAFLD remain largely unclear. Methods: Using network analysis and RNA-seq to determine the correlation between NRs and microRNA in human NAFLD patients, we revealed that MIR20B specifically targets PPARA. MIR20B mimic and anti-MIR20B were administered to human HepG2 and Huh-7 cells and mouse primary hepatocytes as well as high-fat diet (HFD)- or methionine-deficient diet (MCD)-fed mice to verify the specific function of MIR20B in NAFLD. We tested the inhibition of the therapeutic effect of a PPARα agonist, fenofibrate, by Mir20b and the synergic effect of combination of fenofibrate with anti-Mir20b in NAFLD mouse model. Results: We revealed that MIR20B specifically targets PPARA through miRNA regulatory network analysis of nuclear receptor genes in NAFLD. The expression of MIR20B was upregulated in free fatty acid (FA)-treated hepatocytes and the livers of both obesity-induced mice and NAFLD patients. Overexpression of MIR20B significantly increased hepatic lipid accumulation and triglyceride levels. Furthermore, MIR20B significantly reduced FA oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis by targeting PPARA. In Mir20b-introduced mice, the effect of fenofibrate to ameliorate hepatic steatosis was significantly suppressed. Finally, inhibition of Mir20b significantly increased FA oxidation and uptake, resulting in improved insulin sensitivity and a decrease in NAFLD progression. Moreover, combination of fenofibrate and anti-Mir20b exhibited the synergic effect on improvement of NAFLD in MCD-fed mice. Conclusions: Taken together, our results demonstrate that the novel MIR20B targets PPARA, plays a significant role in hepatic lipid metabolism, and present an opportunity for the development of novel therapeutics for NAFLD. Abstract Background Intravenous anesthesia has been reported to have a favorable effect on the prognosis of cancer patients. This study was performed to analyze data regarding the relation between anesthetics and the prognosis of cancer patients in our hospital. Methods The medical records of patients who underwent surgical resection for gastric, lung, liver, colon, and breast cancer between January 2006 and December 2009 were reviewed. Depending on the type of anesthetic, it was divided into total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) or volatile inhaled anesthesia (VIA) group. The 5-year overall survival outcomes were analyzed by log-rank test. Cox proportional hazards modeling was used for sensitivity. Results The number of patients finally included in the comparison after propensity matching came to 729 in each group. The number of surviving patients at 5 years came to 660 (90.5%) in the TIVA and 673 (92.3%) in the VIA. The type of anesthetic did not affect the 5-year survival rate according to the log-rank test (P = 0.21). Variables associated with a significant increase in the hazard of death after multivariable analysis were male sex and metastasis at surgery. Yttrium-90 is a useful therapeutic radioisotope for tumor treatment because of its high-energy-emitting beta rays. However, it has been difficult to select appropriate collimators and main energy windows for Y-90 Bremsstrahlung imaging using gamma cameras because of the broad energy spectra of Y-90. We used a Monte Carlo simulation to investigate the effects of collimator selection and energy windows on Y-90 Bremsstrahlung imaging. We considered both MELP and HE collimators. Various phantoms were employed in the simulation to determine the main energy window using primary-to-scatter ratios (PSRs). Imaging performance was evaluated using spatial resolution indices, imaging counts, scatter fractions, and contrast-to-noise ratios. Collimator choice slightly affected energy spectrum shapes and improved PSRs. The HE collimator performed better than the MELP collimator on all imaging performance indices (except for imaging count). We observed minor differences in SR and SF values for the HE collimator among the five simulated energy windows. The combination of an HE collimator and improved-PSR energy window produced the best CNR value. In conclusion, appropriate collimator selection is an important component of Bremsstrahlung Y-90 photon imaging and main energy window determination. We found HE collimators to be more appropriate for improving the imaging performance of Bremsstrahlung Y-90 photons. Maximizing productivity is one of the most critical factors for competitiveness in the manufacturing industry. Needless to say, the semiconductor industry, in which the automation rate is relatively high and the manufacturing process continues 24 h a day, requires high productivity to be maintained. This paper is about a model that analyzes the cause of an increase in time needed for the whole photolithography process and automatically classifies it in real-time by machine learning. The time analytics model based on a k-means algorithm divides the processing time into four hundred detailed time steps and classifies causes through normalizing and clustering processes. Further, true/false measures of performance were employed based on the confusion matrix. To increase the accuracy of the model, the classified cause becomes a source for creating a new algorithm that can detect problems quickly and accurately. A small number of wafers that the system has failed to classify has accumulated in the database to increase the frequency of occurrence. As a result of evaluating the time analytics model in the photolithography extreme ultraviolet (EUV) equipment, the model has classified 98.6% of the wafers that exceed the limitation. Continuous updates of new phenomena that will be generated from advanced technologies will be more important than the current classification ability. We are accumulating unclassified data for a sustainable system and will continue to classify by synthesizing new phenomena. Data classified in real-time with high accuracy become a steppingstone for maintaining high productivity. Production equipment and processes are developed to enhance individual characteristics. Nevertheless, a data mining method that divides the process time can also be widely used in manufacturing processes of other fields.

Here, novel lightweight Al alloys were designed with an objective to achieve diverse color range and improved mechanical properties. The alloy design strategy was based on a scientific color expression method controlling the microstructural attributes, such as constitutive phases, and their morphology (length-scale). The intrinsic difference in colors between the constitutive phases, their spatial arrangement/dimension, and fraction play a critical role in determining chromatic characteristic of the alloys. Our current research demonstrates the feasibility of the present color alloy design concept with three groups which allows blue color diversification and mechanical properties for ultra-light aluminum-magnesium-silicon alloys.

Abstract DNA methylation is a prominent epigenetic modification in plants and animals regulated by similar mechanisms but the process of DNA demethylation is profoundly different. Unlike vertebrates that require a series of enzymatic conversions of 5-methylcytosine (5mC) into other bases for DNA demethylation, plants utilize the DEMETER (DME) family of 5mC DNA glycosylases to catalyze a direct removal of 5mC from DNA. Here we introduced Arabidopsis DME into human HEK-293T cells to allow direct 5mC excision, and observed that direct DNA demethylation activity was successfully implemented by DME expression. In addition, DME induced diverse cellular responses such as cell proliferation inhibition, cell cycle dysregulation and S phase arrest. Microarray and methylome analyses revealed that DME upregulated a number of genes including cell cycle components, heat shock proteins, and notably, various interferon-stimulated genes. Moreover, DME-mediated DNA demethylation activated endogenous repeat elements, which are likely to form dsRNAs as viral mimics and eventually trigger interferon cascades to establish the antiviral state. This work demonstrates that plant DNA demethylase catalyzes DNA demethylation with a bypass of initial base conversion steps, and the interferon signaling plays a pivotal role to alleviate genotoxic stresses associated with DME-induced DNA demethylation in mammalian cells.
