Abstract Ferroptosis, a regulated form of cell death dependent on reactive oxygen species (ROS), is characterized by iron accumulation and lethal lipid peroxidation. Mitochondria serve as the primary source of ROS and thus play a crucial role in ferroptosis initiation and execution. This study highlights the role of mitochondrial ROS and the significance of voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1) oligomerization in ferroptosis induced by cysteine deprivation or ferroptosis-inducer RSL3. Our results demonstrate that the mitochondria-targeted antioxidants MitoQ and MitoT effectively block ferroptosis induction and that dysfunction of complex III of the mitochondrial electron transport chain contributes to ferroptosis induction. Pharmacological inhibitors that target VDAC1 oligomerization have emerged as potent suppressors of ferroptosis that reduce mitochondrial ROS production. These findings underscore the critical involvement of mitochondrial ROS production via complex III of the electron transport chain and the essential role of VDAC1 oligomerization in ferroptosis induced by cysteine deprivation or RSL3. This study deepens our understanding of the intricate molecular networks governing ferroptosis and provides insights into the development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting dysregulated cell death pathways.

Abstract Recently, an investigation into preventive measures for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has garnered considerable attention. Consequently, strategies for the proactive prevention of viral pathogens have also attracted significant interest in the field of wearable devices and electronic textiles research, particularly due to their potential applications in personal protective equipment. In this study, we introduce smart textiles designed with optimized piezoelectric devices that exhibit antifouling performance against microorganisms and actively inactivate viruses. These active-type smart textiles, which incorporate advanced lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics, a stretchable interconnector array, and polymeric fabric, demonstrate effective antifouling capabilities, detaching approximately 90% of Escherichia coli and 75% of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, they inactivate viruses, releasing ~26.8 ng of N protein from ruptured SARS-CoV-2, using ultrasonic waves within the wearable platform. Experimental results show that piezoelectric smart textiles significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19 by leveraging the electrical and acoustic properties of PZT ceramics.

Abstract The IL-23-Th17 axis is responsible for neutrophilic inflammation in various inflammatory diseases. Here, we discover a potential pathway to inhibit neutrophilic asthma. In our neutrophil-dominant asthma (NDA) model, single-cell RNA-seq analysis identifies a subpopulation of CD39+CD9+ interstitial macrophages (IMs) suppressed by IL-23 in NDA conditions but increased by an IL-23 inhibitor αIL-23p19. Adoptively transferred CD39+CD9+ IMs suppress neutrophil extracellular trap formation (NETosis), a representative phenotype of NDA, and also Th17 cell activation and neutrophilic inflammation. CD39+CD9+ IMs first attach to neutrophils in a CD9-dependent manner, and then remove ATP near neutrophils that contribute to NETosis in a CD39-dependent manner. Transcriptomic data from asthmatic patients finally show decreased CD39+CD9+ IMs in severe asthma than mild/moderate asthma. Our results suggest that CD39+CD9+ IMs function as a potent negative regulator of neutrophilic inflammation by suppressing NETosis in the IL-23-Th17 axis and can thus serve as a potential therapeutic target for IL-23-Th17-mediated neutrophilic asthma.

In this study, we compared antithrombotic activities of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) and Cervi Parvum Cornu (CPC) on rats with induced thrombosis. Results indicate that KRG and CPC suppressed the arterial occlusion and the combination of KRG and CPC (KRG + CPC) treatment exhibited a synergistic effect with maximum reduction in thrombosis.

Panax species include Panax ginseng Meyer, Panax quinquefolium L., Panax notoginseng, Panax japonicum, Panax trifolium, and Panax pseudoginseng, which contain bioactive components (BCs) such as ginsenosides and polysaccharides. Recently, growing evidence has revealed the pharmacological effects of Panax species and their BCs on allergic airway diseases (AADs), including allergic asthma (AA) and allergic rhinitis (AR). AADs are characterized by damaged epithelium, sustained acquired immune responses with enforced Th2 responses, allergen-specific IgE production, and enhanced production of histamine and leukotrienes by activated mast cells and basophils. In this review, we summarize how Panax species and their BCs modulate acquired immune responses involving interactions between dendritic cells and T cells, reduce the pro-inflammatory responses of epithelial cells, and reduce allergenic responses from basophils and mast cells in vitro. In addition, we highlight the current understanding of the alleviative effects of Panax species and their BCs against AA and AR in vivo. Moreover, we discuss the unmet needs of research and considerations for the treatment of patients to provide basic scientific knowledge for the treatment of AADs using Panax species and their BCs.

This study is the first report of parasite and fungal disease separated from domestically reared Atlantic salmon in Korea; the characteristics of the pathogens were identified, and histopathological analysis was conducted. Fungal and parasitic diseases were detected in Atlantic salmon and were isolated as Saprolegnia parasitica and Neoparamoeba perurans based on morphological and genetic analysis. External symptoms observed in Atlantic salmon infected with S. parasitica include fin ulcers and hemorrhage, abdominal hemorrhage, and necrosis of the gills and gill covers. The histopathological analysis results showed necrosis, hemorrhaging, and inflammatory cell infiltration in the abdominal muscles, while only inflammatory cell infiltration was observed in the gill covers. The clinical symptoms observed in Atlantic salmon infected with N. perurans included excessive mucus secretion in the gills, a dense amoebic presence on the gill filaments, respiratory distress, and opening of the mouth and gill covers after death. Through histopathological analysis, we observed lesions in epithelial cells, characterized by the proliferation of epithelial cells and the fusion of secondary lamellae. Numerous lamellae were observed to be attached or fused with each other. To ensure the successful establishment of the Atlantic salmon aquaculture industry in Korea, it is essential to swiftly quarantine infected fish based on the morphological characteristics of S. parasitica and N. perurans revealed in this study, along with the external symptoms of Atlantic salmon infected with these pathogens. Developing disease control strategies based on the findings of this research is imperative.

In this study, condensation reduction methods with high field applicability to various types of underground parking lots in apartment buildings were selected and tested. The selected methods included floor-insulating drainage plates, induction fans with heating wires, and an automatic control ventilation system based on indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity. The effectiveness of these methods was evaluated via real-world field experiments. The results indicated that while the insulating drainage plates initially blocked the cold, their long-term effectiveness matched that of normal drainage plates (difference 0.1°C). The induction fan with a heating wire showed average increases of 0.8°C and 2.7°C in wall surface temperature after one and three months, compared to normal induction fans. The absolute humidity of the automatic control ventilation decreased by 1.8 g/kg after 10 h of operation during rainy weather, whereas the manual control ventilation system increased by 0.6 g/kg under the same conditions. This study offers insights into the most effective application of these methods for various parking lot configurations.

Abstract Background To compare the ocular features of highly myopic eyes with posterior staphyloma of wide macular type according to its morphological complexity. Methods In this cross-sectional study, wide macular posterior staphyloma (WMPS) was classified into the primary (Curtin type I) and the compound (Curtin types VI to X) forms based on the configuration within the staphyloma. The grades of myopic maculopathy and the thicknesses of choroid and sclera were compared between the primary and compound forms of WMPS. Abstract Aspergillus fumigatus is the leading causative agent of life-threatening invasive aspergillosis in immunocompromised individuals. One antifungal class used to treat Aspergillus infections is the fungistatic echinocandins, semisynthetic drugs derived from naturally occurring fungal lipopeptides. By inhibiting beta-1,3-glucan synthesis, echinocandins cause both fungistatic stunting of hyphal growth and repeated fungicidal lysis of apical tip compartments. Here, we uncover an endogenous mechanism of echinocandin tolerance in A. fumigatus whereby the inducible oxylipin signal 5,8-diHODE confers protection against tip lysis via the transcription factor ZfpA. Treatment of A. fumigatus with echinocandins induces 5,8-diHODE synthesis by the fungal oxygenase PpoA in a ZfpA dependent manner resulting in a positive feedback loop. This protective 5,8-diHODE/ZfpA signaling relay is conserved among diverse isolates of A. fumigatus and in two other Aspergillus pathogens. Our findings reveal an oxylipin-directed growth program—possibly arisen through natural encounters with native echinocandin producing fungi—that enables echinocandin tolerance in pathogenic aspergilli.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of cranial cruciate ligament rupture (RCCL) and the efficacy of tibial plateau angle (TPA) as a prognostic indicator in small breed dogs diagnosed with RCCL. Materials and Methods: For this study, 53 dogs with RCCL were selected based on their medical data. The Tibial plateau angle (TPA) was calculated by analyzing the radiographic images of the stifle joint region. The dogs were categorized based on their body weight, sex, age, breed, and RCCL. Subsequently, clinical outcomes of dogs were evaluated based on their pre- and postoper¬ative TPAs. Results: The prevalence of RCCL was higher in neutered dogs, especially those neutered before 6 months of age. The preoperative TPAs of all dogs diagnosed with RCCL were lowered with TPLO. Preoperative walking time in the higher pre-operative TPA (>25°) group (13.58 ± 1.53 days) was significantly (p < 0.05) longer than the lower pre-operative TPA (≤25°) group (10.09 ± 0.84). The lower pre-operative TPA (≤ 25°) group showed better prognoses without any more complications than the higher pre-operative TPA (> 25°) group. Furthermore, post-operative walking time in the higher post-operative TPA dogs (>10°) group (18.08 ± 2.22 days) was significantly (p < 0.05) longer than the lower post-operative TPA dogs (≤10°) group (10.20 ± 0.90 days). Likewise, the TPA (≤10°) group showed better prognoses with lowered complications. Background/Aims: Colorectal adenomas are precancerous lesions that may lead to colorectal cancer. Recent studies have shown that colorectal adenomas are associated with atherosclerosis. The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) are noninvasive methods for evaluating atherosclerosis. This study examined the association between atherosclerosis and high-risk colorectal adenomas based on the CAVI and ABI. Methods: The data of patients aged ≥50 years who had a colonoscopy and CAVI and ABI measurements from August 2015 to December 2021 at the Kangwon National University Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. After the colonoscopy, subjects were divided into no, overall, and high-risk (size ≥1 cm, high-grade dysplasia or villous adenoma, three or more adenomas) adenoma groups based on the pathology findings. The data were subjected to univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), is a neurodegenerative disorder that results from hyperglycemic damage and deficient insulin receptor (IR) signaling in peripheral nerves, triggered by failure of insulin production and insulin resistance. IR signaling plays an important role in nutrient metabolism and synaptic formation and maintenance in peripheral neurons. Although several animal models of DPN have been developed to identify new drug candidates using cytotoxic reagents, nutrient-rich diets, and genetic manipulations, a model showing beneficial effects remains to be established. In this study, we aimed to develop a DPN animal model using zebrafish to validate the effects of drug candidates on sensory neuropathy through in vivo imaging during the early larval stage. To achieve this, we generated Tg (ins:gal4p16);Tg (5uas:epNTR-p2a-mcherry) zebrafish using an enhanced potency nitroreductase (epNTR)-mediated chemogenetic ablation system, which showed highly efficient ablation of pancreatic β-cells following treatment with low-dose metronidazole (MTZ). Using in vivo live imaging, we observed that sensory nerve endings and postsynaptic formation in the peripheral lateral line (PLL) were defective, followed by a disturbance in rheotaxis behavior without any locomotory behavioral changes. Despite defects in sensory nerves and elevated glucose levels, both reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, a primary cause of DPN, and the number of ganglion cells, remained normal. Furthermore, we found that the activity of mTOR, a downstream target of IR signaling, was decreased in the PLL ganglion cells of the transgenic zebrafish. Our data indicates that peripheral neuropathy results from the loss of IR signaling due to insulin deficiency rather than hyperglycemia alone.

The present study aimed on understanding the activities of herbal extracts, focusing on Corchorus olitorius L (Molokhia), known for its several biological effects. We found the immune enhancing effect of water extracts of C. olitorius L. (WEC) in a cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed rat. Namely, WEC increased the populations of neutrophils, and lymphocytes in the blood. In splenocytes, the activating markers of natural killer (NK) cell such as CD56, CD16, NKp46 and NKp30 were significantly upregulated. The protein expressions of CD69 (T-cell marker), CD56 (NK cell marker), and NKp30, and NKp46 (NK cell activator markers) are significantly upregulated on splenocytes. Additionally, the surface markers of M1 macrophages, such as CD80, CD11b/c+, and MHC-II were amplified with WEC treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, the mRNA expression of cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-12, IL-18, IL-1β, and TNF-α), NOS2, NLRP3, MAPKs and NF-κB were significantly improved. These results demonstrated that WEC augments an immune activity and may represent a potential immunostimulant for an immunity of human.

Obesity is defined as a condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat cells, which results in increased body weight. Worldwide, obesity is progressively on the rise, leading to an increased prevalence of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Obesity is a result of the interplay between genetic, metabolic, social, behavioral, and cultural factors, necessitating an interdisciplinary and multimodal management approach. Diet therapy, which includes dietary modifications and nutritional interventions, is a fundamental component of the multifaceted approach to managing obesity. The principle of diet therapy is based on achieving weight loss through a negative energy balance and maintaining weight through an equilibrium of energy intake and expenditure. Strategies for weight loss and control rely on caloric restriction, macronutrient distribution, and dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diets. Recently, studies have been conducted on weight control using information and communication technology-based interventions, as well as interventions based on intestinal microorganisms which consider inter-individual variability and long-term adherence. In conclusion, diet therapy stands as a pivotal element in the management of obesity, providing a personalized and comprehensive approach to weight control. By combining evidence-based dietary strategies with behavioral modifications and consistent support, healthcare professionals can enable individuals to attain and sustain a healthier weight, thereby reducing related health risks.

Background/Aims: Tegoprazan is a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker that has beneficial effects on acid-related disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux and peptic ulcer diseases. This study aimed to validate the effect of tegoprazan on endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)-induced artificial ulcers. Methods : Patients from 16 centers in Korea who underwent ESD for gastric neoplasia were enrolled. After ESD, pantoprazole was administered intravenously for 48 hours. The patients were randomly allocated to either the tegoprazan or esomeprazole group. Tegoprazan 50 mg or esomeprazole 40 mg were administered for 4 weeks, after which gastroscopic evaluation was performed. If the artificial ulcer had not healed, the same dose of tegoprazan or esomeprazole was administered for an additional 4 weeks, and a gastroscopic evaluation was performed. Results : One hundred sixty patients were enrolled in this study. The healing rates of artificial ulcers at 4 weeks were 30.3% (23/76) and 22.1% (15/68) in the tegoprazan and esomeprazole groups, respectively (p=0.006). At 8 weeks after ESD, the cumulative ulcer healing rates were 73.7% (56/76) and 77.9% (53/68) in the tegoprazan and esomeprazole groups, respectively (p=0.210). Delayed bleeding occurred in two patients in the tegoprazan group (2.6%) and in one patient in the esomeprazole group (1.5%). Other adverse events were negligible in both groups. Conclusion : s: Tegoprazan showed similar effects on post-ESD artificial ulcer healing in comparison with esomeprazole.

Abstract Eigenstate coalescence in non-Hermitian systems is widely observed in diverse scientific domains encompassing optics and open quantum systems. Recent investigations have revealed that adiabatic encircling of exceptional points (EPs) leads to a nontrivial Berry phase in addition to an exchange of eigenstates. Based on these phenomena, we propose in this work an exhaustive classification framework for EPs in non-Hermitian physical systems. In contrast to previous classifications that only incorporate the eigenstate exchange effect, our proposed classification gives rise to finer $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 classifications depending on the presence of a π Berry phase after the encircling of the EPs. Moreover, by mapping arbitrary one-dimensional systems to the adiabatic encircling of EPs, we can classify one-dimensional non-Hermitian systems characterized by topological phase transitions involving EPs. Applying our exceptional classification to various multiband systems, we expect to enhance the understanding of topological phases in non-Hermitian systems.

Abstract This study investigates the impact of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) on the efficacy of intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implants in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) over a 12-month period. We retrospectively reviewed 90 DME patients treated with DEX implants, categorizing them based on baseline HbA1c levels (≤ 7% and > 7%) and 12-month changes in HbA1c ("improved", "stable", "worsened"). At the 2-month mark, the mean central subfield thickness (CST) reduction in the HbA1c ≤ 7% group was − 147.22 ± 113.79 µm compared to -130.41 ± 124.50 µm in the > 7% group (p = 0.506). Notably, 12-month outcomes between these groups showed no significant difference. The "improved" HbA1c subgroup experienced a more pronounced CST reduction at 2 months (p = 0.042), with outcomes leveling off with other groups by 12 months. Conclusively, DEX implant outcomes in DME were not influenced by either baseline HbA1c levels or their changes over time. This suggests that local alterations in the inflammation milieu may have a potentially stronger impact on DME treatment outcomes, highlighting the importance of considering local factors in DME treatment.

Abstract Addressing age-related immunological defects through therapeutic interventions is essential for healthy aging, as the immune system plays a crucial role in controlling infections, malignancies, and in supporting tissue homeostasis and repair. In our study, we show that stimulating toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) via mucosal delivery of a flagellin-containing fusion protein effectively extends the lifespan and enhances the healthspan of mice of both sexes. This enhancement in healthspan is evidenced by diminished hair loss and ocular lens opacity, increased bone mineral density, improved stem cell activity, delayed thymic involution, heightened cognitive capacity, and the prevention of pulmonary lung fibrosis. Additionally, this fusion protein boosts intestinal mucosal integrity by augmenting the surface expression of TLR5 in a certain subset of dendritic cells and increasing interleukin-22 (IL-22) secretion. In this work, we present observations that underscore the benefits of TLR5-dependent stimulation in the mucosal compartment, suggesting a viable strategy for enhancing longevity and healthspan.

Abstract Background An accurate and easily accessible method for diagnosing malignancies in local veterinary clinics has not yet been established. Objectives To investigate the usefulness of serum thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) protein and its autoantibody as tumor biomarkers in dogs. Animals Serum samples from 1702 dogs were collected from local animal hospitals and referral animal medical centers in South Korea. Methods TK1 protein OD value and TK1 autoantibody ratio (TK1 autoantibody OD/total IgG OD) in serum samples of dogs classified into healthy controls, group with nontumor disease, group with benign and group with malignant tumors were measured using lateral flow immunochromatographic assay methods. Abstract Background The obstetrics and gynaecology (OB-GYN) residency training program in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) began in 2003 based on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and ‘Reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health interventions (RMNCH) strategies and action plan’. However, the training program had not been properly evaluated previously. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the current postgraduate OB-GYN residency training program in Lao PDR by using CIPP model to identify the current problems (the strengths and weaknesses) and suggest a future plan to promote continuous improvement. Method The context, input, process, and product classification (CIPP) model was used to develop criteria and indicators. A mixed-methods approach was used for this study. To capture instructional material for quantitative analysis, a Google survey with 38 items and a t-test were used to determine a significant difference in responses between residents and lecturers (N = 120). Based on qualitative analysis, an in-depth interview was done (four questions based on study outcomes, including satisfaction, strengths and weaknesses, and future opportunities), and six interviews provided different viewpoints on the course. The SPSS software program was used to measure validity, with p-values = 0.05. Results The overall average response rate was 97.5%. Two significant differences in program perspectives were revealed between lecturers and residents, difficulties in maintaining the course (professors 3.66 ± 1.03 and residents 3.27 ± 0.98, p = 0.04) and learning outcomes achieved (professors 3.57 ± 0.85 and residents 3.14 ± 0.95, p = 0.01 The overall average for the context part of the questionnaire was under 3.00, with the lowest scores for overlapped learning outcomes and difficulties in maintaining the course. The input part, lack of the classroom, skills lab and staff; the process part, lecturer to collect student opinions and the product part on learning outcomes. Conclusion Curriculum improvement based on the program evaluation results, including regular evaluation and feedback, will advance the residency training program based on the RMNCH strategy and contribute to the promotion of maternal health in the Lao PDR.

Background Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a common musculoskeletal disorder in children. Secondary scoliosis can occur in patients with CMT; however, the extent of inclination and improvement of scoliosis after surgical correction of CMT have not been adequately studied. In this study, we aimed to evaluate and measure the improvement in vertebral tilting after surgical correction according to age at the time of surgery.

Amicarbazone (AMZ), a triazolinone herbicide widely applied in agriculture, is known to inhibit photosystem II in target plants, disrupting photosynthesis and causing oxidative stress that leads to weed mortality. Despite its widespread use, the developmental and neurotoxic effects of AMZ on aquatic organisms remain underexplored. This study assesses the impact of AMZ exposure on zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos/larvae, focusing on developmental toxicity and neurotoxicity. Zebrafish were exposed to AMZ at various concentrations to evaluate survival, malformations, heart rate, and behavior. Significant developmental defects, including reduced survival rates, increased malformations, and decreased heart rates, were observed in zebrafish embryos exposed to AMZ, particularly at higher concentrations. Additionally, behavioral assays revealed decreased locomotor activity, particularly at concentrations of 100 and 200 mg/L. Moreover, AMZ exposure disrupted motor axon formation, oligodendrocyte development, and the expression of key genes involved in neurodevelopment. The downregulation of cholinergic, dopaminergic, and serotonergic signaling pathways was also identified, indicating neurotoxicity. These findings highlight AMZ’s potential to induce both developmental and neurotoxic effects in zebrafish and suggest the need for further research on its long-term ecological impacts.

Dermatophytic pseudomycetoma (DPM), which is a deeper dermal and/or subcutaneous infection of dermatophytes, has been rarely reported in Domestic Korean Short Hair Cats. A 3-year-old, spayed female, domestic Korean Short Hair Cat presented with a history of crusts, nodules, and pruritus for 1 year. At the initial presentation, multifocal ulcerative nodules covered with yellowish grains were noted on her ventral thorax, abdomen, flank, and left hindlimb. Cytology of ulcerative nodules revealed degenerative neutrophils, macrophages, multinucleated giant cells, and hyphae. Histological examination of nodules revealed pyogranulomatous dermatitis with fungal plaques, and Microsporum canis and Staphylococcus aureus were identified in the culture. Therefore, the cat was diagnosed with DPM with secondary pyoderma. Oral itraconazole (10 mg/kg, once a day) was administered, but no significant improvement was observed. Therefore, intralesional (IL) injection of amphotericin B (0.6 mg/nodule) and oral administration of terbinafine (30 mg/kg, twice a day) were administered to the cat. With these medications, ulceration and the number and size of nodules decreased significantly, although large dome-shaped nodules remained. Skin lesions were treated with oral terbinafine and itraconazole administration for 5 months. However, after 6 months, recurrence of multifocal ulcerative nodules was observed, and the cat died 10 months after initial presentation. In this case, IL amphotericin B and oral terbinafine administration were partially effective in DPM treatment, suggesting that this may be an option for DPM treatment. Further studies to determine dose and frequency of IL amphotericin B in the management of DPM are warranted.

Summary: The choroid plexus (ChP) produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It also contributes to brain development and serves as the CSF-blood barrier. Prior studies have identified transporters on the epithelial cells that transport water and ions from the blood vasculature to the ventricles and tight junctions involved in the CSF-blood barrier. Yet, how the ChP epithelial cells control brain physiology remains unresolved. We use zebrafish to provide insights into the physiological roles of the ChP. Upon histological and transcriptomic analyses, we identify that the zebrafish ChP is conserved with mammals and expresses transporters involved in CSF secretion. Next, we show that the ChP epithelial cells secrete proteins into CSF. By ablating the ChP epithelial cells, we identify a reduction of the ventricular sizes without alterations of the CSF-blood barrier. Altogether, our findings reveal that the zebrafish ChP is conserved and contributes to the size and homeostasis of the brain ventricles.

Background: Fruit bats are natural carriers of Nipah virus (NiV). The primary objective of this study is to identify potential reservoir species in a selected geographic regions. It is necessary to determine an accurate species identification of the associated reservoir bat species distributed in a specific region. Results: In this study, we collected 20 different bat specimens from the NiV-prone area of the Kushtia district. Among these, 14 were tissue samples (BT-1–14) and six were fecal samples (BF-1–6). We used the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b, one of the most abundant and frequently used genetic markers, for polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing. Out of the 20 samples, 12 tissue samples and 2 fecal samples were successfully amplified and sequenced. However, two tissue samples and four fecal samples yielded chimeric sequences, rendering them unsuitable for annotation. The sequences of the successfully amplified samples were compared to those deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database using basic local alignment search tool to identify the bat specimen collected. The study identified six different bat species using both morphological and genetic data, which may carriers of the NiV. Conclusions: Our results suggest that additional research should be conducted to gather more information on fruit bats from different localities across the country. The study contributes to the establishment of appropriate measures for NiV carrying disease control and management.

The economic integration has been the most important agenda since the Second World War particularly in Europe because many European nations were heavily destroyed and ruined. After the severe destruction, European political leaders started to rethink how to restore Europe economically and politically in order to establish a long-term peace in Europe. The two major countries, France and Germany, initiated this based on reconciliation processes and signed on the Elysee Treaty that is legally binding and known as the de jour approach. Unfortunately, East Asian countries, Japan and South Korea took a different path, without reconciliation processes, based on the de facto approach only for economic cooperation. As a result, it is not solid yet, but contains fragile risks for the two countries to cooperate in a sustainable way. This paper investigates how and why Franco-German tandem has played core roles in the EU integration. Furthermore, it argues what are successful factors for Franco-German cooperation. Background and Aims: Nivolumab was the first immune checkpoint inhibitor approved for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is locally effective and may enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapy. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of concurrent nivolumab and EBRT in HCC with macrovascular invasion. Methods: In this phase II multicenter trial, patients with HCC and macrovascular invasion were concurrently treated with intravenous nivolumab (3 mg/kg every 2 weeks) and EBRT, followed by maintenance nivolumab until progression or unacceptable toxicity. Primary endpoints were progression-free survival (PFS) and safety, and secondary endpoints were overall survival, time-to-progression, objective response rate, and disease control rate. Results: Between January 2020 and June 2021, 50 patients (male 84%, median age 62.5) were enrolled; 47 (94.0%) and 13 (26.0%) with portal (Vp1/2, n = 21; Vp3, n = 23; Vp4, n = 3) and hepatic vein invasion, respectively. Patients received EBRT (median dose: 50 [IQR 43–50] Gy) after the first nivolumab dose. The median number of nivolumab doses was 8.5. Median PFS was 5.6 (90% CI 3.6–9.9) months. Median overall survival and time-to-progression were 15.2 (90% CI 10.8–19.6) and 5.6 (90% CI 3.6–9.9) months, respectively. The objective response rate and disease control rate were 36.0% and 74.0%, respectively. The median duration of response was 9.9 months. Of 35 patients with follow-up data, 23 received subsequent systemic treatment, including atezolizumab-bevacizumab, sorafenib, lenvatinib, and regorafenib. Treatment-related any grade adverse events (AEs) and grade 3/4 AEs occurred in 40 (80.0%) and 6 (12.0%) patients, respectively. Common treatment-related AEs included pruritus (38.0%) and rash (16.0%), with no treatment-related deaths. Conclusion: Concurrent nivolumab therapy and EBRT showed encouraging PFS with acceptable safety in patients with advanced HCC and macrovascular invasion. Impact and implications: Immune checkpoint inhibitors, the standard care for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), show relatively poor therapeutic effects in patients with advanced HCC and macrovascular invasion. In this investigator-initiated phase II study, we, for the first time, show that concurrent external beam radiation therapy with nivolumab, an immune checkpoint inhibitor, led to encouraging progression-free survival in patients with HCC and macrovascular invasion. The concurrent treatment was tolerable without significant safety concerns. Further randomized studies investigating the combination of immunotherapy and external beam radiation therapy are required. Abstract Background To predict, using deep learning, the first recurrence in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) after three monthly loading injections of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF). Methods Optical coherence tomography (OCT) images were obtained at baseline and after the loading phase. The first recurrence was defined as the initial appearance of a new retinal hemorrhage or intra/subretinal fluid accumulation after the initial resolution of exudative changes after three loading injections. Standard U-Net architecture was used to identify the three retinal fluid compartments, which include pigment epithelial detachment, subretinal fluid, and intraretinal fluid. To predict the first recurrence of nAMD, classification learning was conducted to determine whether the first recurrence occurred within three months after the loading phase. The recurrence classification architecture was built using ResNet50. The model with retinal regions of interest of the entire region and fluid region on OCT at baseline and after the loading phase is presented. Results A total of 1,444 eyes of 1,302 patients were included. The mean duration until the first recurrence after the loading phase was 8.20 ± 15.56 months. The recurrence classification system revealed that the model with the fluid region of OCT after the loading phase provided the highest classification performance, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.725 ± 0.012. Heatmap analysis revealed that three pathological fluids, subsided choroidal neovascularization lesions, and hyperreflective foci were important areas for the first recurrence. Conclusions The deep learning algorithm allowed for the prediction of the first recurrence for three months after the loading phase with adequate feasibility. An automated prediction system may assist in establishing patient-specific treatment plans and the provision of individualized medical care for patients with nAMD.

Abstract The forthcoming generation of materials, including artificial muscles, recyclable and healable systems, photochromic heterogeneous catalysts, or tailorable supercapacitors, relies on the fundamental concept of rapid switching between two or more discrete forms in the solid state. Herein, we report a breakthrough in the “speed limit” of photochromic molecules on the example of sterically-demanding spiropyran derivatives through their integration within solvent-free confined space, allowing for engineering of the photoresponsive moiety environment and tailoring their photoisomerization rates. The presented conceptual approach realized through construction of the spiropyran environment results in ~1000 times switching enhancement even in the solid state compared to its behavior in solution, setting a record in the field of photochromic compounds. Moreover, integration of two distinct photochromic moieties in the same framework provided access to a dynamic range of rates as well as complementary switching in the material’s optical profile, uncovering a previously inaccessible pathway for interstate rapid photoisomerization.

Apartment housing in South Korea mainly uses underfloor radiant heating systems. However, the performance of these systems has not improved significantly in recent years. The heat storage capacity of the floor influences the heating energy required and impacts the comfort level of occupants. Thermal energy storage materials, such as phase change materials (PCMs), can be employed to increase the heat storage capacity. This study aims to investigate the appropriate installation position and phase change temperature of PCMs applied to an underfloor radiant heating system. Two mock-up tests were conducted. First, the PCM was installed on the top, side, and bottom of the heating pipe, and the floor surface temperature was compared with that of a conventional floor structure in each case. Second, PCMs with phase change temperatures of 34 and 43 ℃ were installed in different rooms, and the floor surface temperatures were compared. The results indicated that PCMs should ideally be installed at the bottom of the heating pipe, and a phase change temperature of 34 ℃ is appropriate for use in Korean underfloor radiant heating systems.

Background/Aim Patients with large (>5 cm) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have limited treatment options, thus necessitating the identification of prognostic factors and the development of predictive tools. This study aimed to identify prognostic factors and to construct a nomogram to predict survival outcomes in patients with large HCC. Methods A cohort of 438 patients, who were diagnosed with large HCC at a tertiary hospital between 2015 and 2018, was analyzed. Cox proportional hazards models were used to identify key prognosticators of overall survival (OS), and an independent set of prognostic factors was used to develop a nomogram. The discrimination and calibration abilities of the nomogram were assessed and internal validation was performed using cross-validation and bootstrapping methods. Results During a median follow-up of 9.3 months, the median OS was 9.9 months, and the 1-year OS rate was 43.9%. Multivariable Cox regression analysis revealed that performance status, modified albumin-bilirubin grade, tumor size, extent of portal vein tumor thrombosis, and initial treatment significantly affected OS. The newly developed nomogram incorporating these variables demonstrated favorable accuracy (Harrell’s concordance index, 0.807). Conclusions The newly developed nomogram facilitated the estimation of individual survival outcomes in patients with large HCC, providing an acceptable level of accuracy.

Abstract Non-trivial linking invariant encodes robust information of topological matter. It has been recently shown that the linking and winding of complex eigenenergy strings can classify one-dimensional non-Hermitian topological matter. However, in higher dimensions, bundles of linked strings can emerge such that every string is mutually linked with all the other strings. To the best of our knowledge, a non-Hermitian Hopf bundle has not been experimentally clarified. Here, we attempt to explore the non-Hermitian Hopf bundle by visualizing the global linking structure of spinor strings in the momentum space of a two-dimensional electric circuit. By exploiting the flexibility of reconfigurable couplings between circuit nodes, we study the non-Hermitian topological phase transition by exploring the intricate structure of the Hopf bundle. Furthermore, we find that the higher-order skin effect in real space is accompanied by the linking of spinor strings in momentum space, revealing bulk-boundary correspondence between the two domains.

PURPOSE This study aimed to develop a Handball Academy Korea Physical Fitness Test Battery for youth handball athletes considering their characteristics using the Delphi/AHP method. METHODS After reviewing previous studies, an expert meeting was held to draft a battery. To select physical fitness variables, 17 experts with more than 10 years of research or coaching experience in related fields were invited. The contact validity of each variable was verified using the 1st and 2nd Delphi surveys. A decision-making method based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used to assign weights to each factor in the final physical fitness battery, which was selected based on the results of the Delphi survey. RESULTS Ten physical fitness factors, namely, length (CVR=1.00), weight (CVR=0.67), muscle strength (CVR=0.67), muscular endurance (CVR=0.83), cardiorespiratory fitness (CVR=0.83), flexibility (CVR=0.67), power (CVR=1.00), agility (CVR=1.00), speed (CVR=0.80), coordination (CVR=1.00), were determined. As test variables for physical fitness, height (CVR=0.83), arm span (CVR=0.67), lean body mass (CVR=0.64), handgrip strength (CVR=0.83), push-up (CVR=0.67), 20 m shuttle run (CVR=1.00), sit-and-reach (CVR=0.83), standing long jump (CVR=0.76), countermovement jump (CVR=0.67), ball speed (CVR=0.67), rollercoaster run (CVR=0.83), visual reaction (CVR=0.83), 20 m sprint (CVR=0.83), and ball handling (CVR=0.67) were found to be valid. Weight was calculated according to the relative importance of the determined variables. CONCLUSIONS The present findings indicate that the Handball Academy Korea Physical Fitness Test Battery can be used to evaluate the physical fitness of youth handball athletes and select potential players.

Background/Aims: Among several methods used to prevent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) bleeding, the recently developed hemostatic powder (HP) has few technical limitations and is relatively easy-to-use. This study aimed to analyze the hemostatic effects and mechanisms of two HPs using a porcine upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage model. Methods: We evaluated HPs (Endospray and epidermal growth factor [EGF]-endospray) for adhesion, waterproofing ability, permeability, and absorption in vitro. ESD was performed to induce bleeding ulcers in the porcine stomachs. In a total of three pigs, three bleeding ulcers per animal were generated. Hemostasis and rebleeding were evaluated endoscopically. After 72 hours, the animals were sacrificed, and histologically analyzed. Results: The water absorption of HPs was over 20 times the initial value within 30 minutes. The gelated HPs completely blocked water penetration into the applied site within 5 minutes and strongly adhered to the Petri-dish surface for up to 6 hours. The initial hemostasis rates within 5 minutes were 33.3%, 100.0%, and 66.7%, and the rebleeding rates at 6 to 72 hours after HP application were 33.3%, 16.7%, and 33.3% (control, Endospray, and EGF-endospray groups, respectively). Histological analysis revealed the thickness of the regenerated mucosa (522.1, 514.5, and 680.3 μm) and the submucosal layer (1,510.3, 2,848.2, and 3,062.3 μm) and the number of newly formed blood vessels (15.3, 17.9, and 20.5) in the control, Endospray, and EGF-endospray groups, respectively. Conclusions: The endoscopic HPs demonstrated the ability to elicit effective initial hemostasis and the histological ulcer-healing effect of EGF in an animal model of hemorrhagic gastric ulcers.

Abstract Specimen-induced aberration has been a major factor limiting the imaging depth of single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). Here, we report the application of label-free wavefront sensing adaptive optics to SMLM for deep-tissue super-resolution imaging. The proposed system measures complex tissue aberrations from intrinsic reflectance rather than fluorescence emission and physically corrects the wavefront distortion more than three-fold stronger than the previous limit. This enables us to resolve sub-diffraction morphologies of cilia and oligodendrocytes in whole zebrafish as well as dendritic spines in thick mouse brain tissues at the depth of up to 102 μm with localization number enhancement by up to 37 times and localization precision comparable to aberration-free samples. The proposed approach can expand the application range of SMLM to whole zebrafish that cause the loss of localization number owing to severe tissue aberrations.
