Pb is a contaminant released during cassiterite extraction, and it stands out for its high toxicity. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of flood pulse on Pb dynamics in four fish species with different feeding habits (Cichlapleiozona: carnivorous, Mylossomaduriventre: herbivorous, Prochilodus nigricans: detritivorous, and Serrasalmus rhombeus: piscivorous) over four hydrological periods in Puruzinho Lake (Brazilian Amazon), which receives water from the Madeira River. This study analyses the mercury (Hg) concentration in the meat of Thunnus albacares and Thunnus obesus caught from the western equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The objective was to estimate the Hg intake via tuna ingestion and presents the possible health risk assessment. For T. albacares and T. obesus, the median concentration was 212 ng·g-1 and 475.1 ng·g-1 wet weight, respectively. The Hg concentrations were below the maximum tolerable limit established by international and Brazilian regulations for fishery products. The consumption would pose a risk for human populations that ingest more than 80 g·day-1. Regular monitoring of both human consumption rates and Hg levels in fish are recommended.

Exposure to mercury (Hg) and pesticides (o.p'DDT, p.p'DDT, o.p'DDE, and p.p'DDE) in the Amazon through eating fish is of concern due to the large participation of this food in the diet of traditional fishing communities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the estimated daily intake (EDI) and the incremental lifetime cancer risk associated with Hg and o.p'DDT, p.p'DDT, o.p'DDE, and p.p'DDE in an Amazonian community. The results showed that for Hg, the EDI from carnivorous and detritivorous fish had the highest values, while for pesticides, the EDI from detritivorous fish intake had the highest value. The incremental lifetime cancer risk was below the permitted limit. A recommendation for controlling the high risk of exposure includes the reduction of detritivorous fish ingestion and/or replacement with herbivorous fish, which had lower EDI. We highlight the importance of investigating the human dietary patterns when estimating risk of exposure to Hg and pesticides.

Titanium (Ti) is a metal with low toxicity in organisms; however, Ti in the form of TiO2 nanoparticles is a contaminant of emerging concern. This study determined the concentration of total Ti in the muscle of pink shrimp (Penaeus brasiliensis and P. paulensis) from two anthropized tropical bays (Guanabara and Sepetiba Bays, southeast Brazil) and presented the first estimates of TiO2 in shrimp. Differences in the total Ti concentration were associated with fishing site and season, showing a spatial-temporal trend. The level of anthropization per se did not explain the metal concentration. Both trophic position (δ15N) and trophic habitat (δ13C) of shrimp had negligible influence on the metal concentration. We suggest that Ti point sources into Sepetiba Bay and/or differences regarding fishing sites inside the bays are possible explanations for the results. The estimates of TiO2 in shrimps based on the total Ti concentration are baseline values for future monitoring. Since shrimps are targets of commercial fisheries, monitoring the Ti concentration is a public health interest.

This study evaluated the dispersion of arsenic (As) in the environment due to the use of contaminated groundwater for the irrigation of vegetables and chicken watering in two small farms located in a rural and urban zone in southeastern Brazil. ICP-AES was used to perform As determinations in groundwater, soil and vegetables samples while ICP-OES was used for chicken meat and offal. The As concentrations in the groundwater of the urban and rural farms were above the limit allowed (0.01 mg L−1) by Brazilian regulations (0.040 ± 0.019 and 0.017 ± 0.007 mg L−1, respectively), while the concentrations found in the soil for the same locations were below the limit allowed (15 mg kg−1) (1.071 ± 0.538 and 1.366 ± 0.141 mg kg−1, respectively). Vegetable samples were within the legal limits (0.3, 0.2 and 0.1 mg kg−1 for roots, leaves and fruits, respectively), with the exception of beet fruit (0.114 ± 0.031 mg kg−1) in the urban farm and cassava leaf (0.339 ± 0.374 mg kg−1) in the rural farm. As a general trend, roots accumulated more As compared to fruits and leaves, in that order. With the exception of chicken meat, liver and lung, all other offal analyzed (roe, gizzard, heart and skin) had As concentrations above 1.0 mg kg−1, the maximum allowed limit. The As concentration’ ratio between the evaluated environmental compartments indicated that (1) irrigation acts as a point source of As for the farms; (2) the soil acts as an As accumulator compartment and (3) the plant roots act as a barrier to prevent As translocation to its aerial part. Since the highest As concentrations were found in the least consumed chicken offal, we can conclude that this does not pose a risk to the community in the surrounding study area, but they were warned about our data and its implications to their health.

Recent reports of illegal small-scale alluvial gold mining activities (locally called garimpo) by miners working on rafts in the Paraíba do Sul River (PSR) and in one of its tributaries (Muriaé River (MR)) have raised concerns about Hg contamination. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of garimpo activities on Hg contamination in three environmental compartments. Water, sediment, and aquatic macrophytes (Pistia stratiotes) were sampled during the rainy season in PSR, forming a 106-km transect from the point where garimpo rafts were seen and/or seized by the Federal Police. They were also sampled in the MR. Total and dissolved mercury (Hg) concentrations in water and total Hg in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) sampled in the PSR increased by 1.7, 1.5, and 2.1 times at the points where the rafts were seen compared to the point immediately upstream. In the MR, Hg concentrations were higher than those in the PSR, but most values in the environmental compartments were below the safe limits (174-486 ng∙g

Total mercury (Hg) concentration and stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) were used as chemical tracers in two crustaceans and four fish species that are targets of subsistence fishery in the inner estuary of the Paraiba do Sul River. This fluvial environment in southeast Brazil has a large historical utilization of Hg. δ15N was a better predictor of Hg concentration in the muscle (edible part) than δ13C; i.e., the Hg concentration was more closely related to the trophic position of species than species’ trophic habitat. Consumers at higher trophic levels had higher Hg concentrations. The Hg concentration was below the maximum permissible limits established by the Brazilian Government in fishery products, and there are no human risks related to its consumption.

In this study, total Hg concentrations (HgT) were determined in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) and the dissolved fraction of the water column to evaluate their behavior through a gradient of physical-chemical parameters in a continuum between rivers and the Serinhaém River estuary of the Pratigi Environmental Protection Area, a pristine environment without point sources of Hg contamination, located in Northeast Brazil. Twelve points were sampled, forming a river-estuary transect, and two samplings were carried out (April and September 2019). Significant spatial and temporal effects were detected only for particulate HgT and not for dissolved HgT. Accidents involving economic activities of great impact, such as mining, have caused massive environmental damage. In November 2015, the dam of Fundao, located in the city of Mariana, MG, broke and released 5 × 107 m3 of tailings in the nearby ecosystems, including the Doce River. The physicochemical changes that occurred in the Doce River estuary were analyzed, as well as the trace metal concentrations, both 1 day before and 1 month after the disaster. The analyses of the collected samples (water and sediment) showed changes to the physicochemistry regarding dissolved oxygen, SPM, and temperature (p = 0.008, 0.001, 0.036, respectively). It also detected metals (Fe and Al) in the dissolved fraction beyond the limits recommended by the Brazilian legislation. There was an increase in the total concentrations of Fe and Cd in the sediment after the rupture of the dam and a change in mobile metals (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, and Zn), with higher concentrations of mobile metals being found closer to the ocean (p = 0.06356). After the rupture of the dam, there was a change in the granulometric fraction of the sediment, which became composed mainly of silt and clay. All of the results showed a change on the Doce River estuary, caused by the arrival of the tailings, which can result in future harmful effects with the release of metals present in the sediment and adsorbed to the particles. The changes to the sediment, such as changes in the granulometric fraction, can have negative consequences for the benthic community.

Cr contamination is a growing concern in the Amazon. Along with the rise of cattle farming in the region, tanneries are becoming more common and threatening environmental quality, since the effluents from this activity are rich in Cr. The objective of this study was to evaluate the seasonal and spatial dynamics of Cr in fish with different feeding habits from Puruzinho Lake, located in the Madeira River basin, also determining the daily intake of Cr associated with the consumption of these fish by the population that lives around the lake. Damming rivers for hydropower generation interferes in the flow of water bodies and, consequently, in trace element biogeochemistry and transport. This study focused on the effects of dams on the seasonal dynamics of arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) in three fluvial systems (Itabapoana River, Flechas Channel and Paraíba do Sul River) and on the input of these elements to the ocean. The elements were evaluated in suspended particulate matter (SPM), surface sediments, and the roots of the aquatic macrophyte Eichhornia crassipes. Our results showed that the proximity of the dams in the Flechas Channel and Rio Itabapoana in relation to their mouth (distances of 4 km and 58 km, respectively) changed As and Hg seasonal dynamics in the environmental compartments analyzed, with the Flechas Channel being the most impacted area. In contrast, the lower part of the Paraíba do Sul River that has more distant dams to its mouth (distance of 184 km) did not show such marked changes, suggesting that most of the inputs are coming from the long river reach. The isotopic and elemental composition of organic matter indicated the soils of native forests as the main source of trace elements to the water bodies. Este estudo realiza diagnóstico quantitativo do atendimento aos alunos com necessidades especiais na rede pública de ensino do Rio de Janeiro. As questões do estudo foram avaliar se há relação entre IDH-M e IDEB e a atenção que as escolas dedicam aos alunos, e avaliar se há variação nessa atenção devido à localização ou número de habitantes do município. A medida de atenção foi a densidade de alunos por sala de atendimento educacional especializado – AEE. O IDH-M e o IDEB não explicaram o grau de atenção aos alunos (R² < 0,01; p > 0,34). Ao se agrupar os municípios por Região de Governo e número de habitantes não houve diferença significativa (p > 0,05). Os resultados indicaram superlotação das salas de AEE na maioria dos casos (≥ 25 alunos). Sugere-se a utilização de dados do Censo Escolar e Censo Demográfico para projetar a necessidade futura de AEE de cada município.

The presence of arsenic (As) in the sediment and the particulate and dissolved fractions of the water column determines its behavior and bioavailability. The main geochemical parameters responsible for As mobility are organic matter and oxide-forming metals such as Fe. The As distribution and its concentration were evaluated in the dissolved fraction, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment of the lower Paraiba do Sul River (PSR), its main tributaries (Muriae, Pomba, and Dois Rios rivers), and flooded and estuarine areas. As was not detected in the dissolved fraction. The river flow influenced the As concentration in the SPM, which was higher in the dry season than in the rainy season (2.6 ± 0.69 and 1.98 ± 0.29 mg kg−1, respectively). The Fe oxyhydroxides, organic carbon, and surface area measured in the sediment were positively related with As concentration (R2 = 0.11, 0.34, and 0.30; p < 0.05). The highest As concentrations in the sediment occurred in the secondary estuary and flooded areas (5.16 ± 4.78 and 1.23 ± 0.44 mg kg−1, respectively), in which finer granulometric fractions (silt and clay) predominated (64% and 71%, respectively), in addition to greater surface area. The measurement of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) and atomic ratio (C:N)a indicated the existence of a combination of autochthonous and allochthonous sources of organic matter composing the SPM. In general, the As concentrations in the sediment and SPM were low, with values below that permitted by Brazilian regulations (5.9 mg kg−1), which suggests that the As sources in the lower basin of the PSR are diffuse and natural.

Damming rivers to generate electricity creates a lentic environment that favors methylmercury (MeHg) formation. Reservoirs in the Amazon are critical environments for MeHg formation, considering its old soils and the use of Hg in gold mining in the region. The objective of this study was to evaluate MeHg accumulation in three environmental compartments (aquatic macrophytes, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment) of the Samuel reservoir (Western Amazon, Brazil), during the low water, ebb and high water hydrological periods, characterizing the dry season, the end of the rainy season and the rainy season, respectively. MeHg concentrations were determined through GC-AFS. The aquatic macrophytes presented higher %MeHg in their roots (up to 12%) compared to their other tissues. This ratio was 1.7 and 5.9 times higher than those observed for SPM and the sediment, but MeHg concentrations were the lowest (0.5–4.5 ng g−1) among the three environmental compartments. Contrary, the highest MeHg concentration was observed in SPM (104 ng g−1) during the low water period. The MeHg concentration in the sediment profile decreased with increasing depth (0.93–0.48 ng g−1) and with decreasing organic matter lability (increasing C:N ratio). In the SPM, on the other hand, MeHg concentration showed a positive association with increasing C:N ratio. We conclude that MeHg dynamics in the SPM are associated with the hydrological periods, with peaks during the low water period. The organic matter lability of the sediments is more limiting to the production of MeHg than the total Hg concentrations.

This study assessed the presence of As in wells located near the lower Paraiba do Sul river, southeastern Brazil. Water samples were collected from 19 home wells and wells managed by the utility company in the region in June 2016 and February, May, and August 2017. The metalloid was detected in seven wells (37%). The most abundant ions in the wells were Cl−, Na+, SO42− and Ca2+ and the ions with the lowest concentrations were F− and Br−. The pH values were approximately 7.0 and redox potential and dissolved O2 values were typical of reducing environments. Levels of As varied between 0.13 μg L−1 and 38.8 μg L−1, which are above the maximum allowable concentration for human consumption according to Brazilian and international regulations (10 μg L−1). The presence of As in wells correlated positively with levels of sulfate and dissolved organic carbon, and correlated negatively with well depth. The results support that the oxidation of sulfide minerals is the process that favors mobilization of As to the groundwater, due to inputs from erosion and rainwater seepage through the soil. No significant seasonal changes were observed in As levels, with the lowest and highest value observed in August (2.61 µg L−1) and June (10.24 µg L−1), respectively. Principal component analysis revealed positive correlation between As levels and nitrite, and the negative correlation between As levels and redox potential and dissolved oxygen. This suggests that arsenite, which is the most soluble and toxic reduced form As, is the predominant chemical species in wells.

Beef and poultry as well as cattle and chicken livers are staple food items for Brazilian population, and previous studies had detected arsenic levels in these foods. This study aims to evaluate the risk of exposure to total and inorganic arsenic by meat intake in three age groups from Brazil (11–16, 16–21, and > 21 years). Our hypotheses are (i) that there is differences in the risk of exposure between age groups and (ii) the older individuals (> 21 years) are under higher risk. To test these hypotheses, we calculated the probabilistic estimated daily intake of total As (TAsEDI) from poultry, beef, cattle liver, and chicken liver, and the probabilistic estimated incremental lifetime skin, bladder, and lung cancer risk (ILCR) associated with inorganic As ingestion from poultry only. TAsEDI and ILCR from poultry differed among groups which confirm the first hypothesis. However, TAsEDI and ILCR results cannot support the second hypothesis. Even though the age groups are under a low risk of exposure to As by meat intake, the results indicate that bladder/lung cancer risk (from poultry intake) slightly exceeds the safe limits in the older population.

Incidental capture of sea turtles in fisheries is the main cause of sea turtle population decline worldwide. This study evaluated the interactions between fisheries and sea turtles based on the perceptions of fishers operating along the coast of Rio de Janeiro State, southeast Brazil. Between 2016 and 2018, 240 ethnographic interviews were conducted in ten fishing communities, and the indication of incidental captures of sea turtles was high (>75%). Chelonia mydas was the most-observed and most-captured turtle species in the fisheries. The types of fishing gear responsible for such captures were the gillnet, bottom trawl net and hooked line. Most of the fishers reported that it is not possible to avoid incidental captures but that the sea turtles do not die immediately. In general, fishers release the captured animals, regardless of their physical condition (alive, apparently dead or dead). The results demonstrate that both the dissemination of information and training are necessary for greater conservation and efficiency in the handling of sea turtles captured in fishing gear.

Phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers represent a source of cadmium (Cd) which may be leached into aquatic systems. Macrophytes accumulate contaminants, and Egeria densa has been shown to grow in aquatic environments polluted with trace elements. In this study, Cd accumulation by E. densa exposed to two Cd treatments (3 and 5 mg L−1) was evaluated under increasing nutrient levels (NP as N–NO3 −, N–NH4 +, and P–PO4 3−, in concentrations 5-, 10- and 100-fold higher (NP5, NP10 and NP100) than in the sampling site) to simulate different levels of eutrophication. Bioaccumulation factors and Cd recovery were calculated and effects on plants were evaluated based on chloroplastidic pigment concentrations (chlorophylls a and b, and carotenoids). We conclude that Cd accumulation by Egeria densa is positively influenced by increasing availability of N and P at the level of around NP10 and probably at a broader concentration range not defined in this study. A further increase in N and P, however, does not generate a significant increase in Cd accumulation. Chloroplastidic pigment concentrations were not linearly correlated with Cd accumulation and the NP10 experiment produced less damage to macrophyte when compared to NP5 and NP100 experiments. Under controlled conditions, it was possible to satisfactorily model Cd bioaccumulation over time, in order to provide essential data for E. densa use in phytoremediation processes. The Cd residence in the macrophyte tissue is increased in eutrophic environments, which puts at risk the whole food chain of the aquatic ecosystem, mainly the primary consumers.

This study evaluated the levels of total Hg and CH3Hg+ from a comprehensive perspective, considering the retention, leaching, and deposition of these contaminants in the main compartments (soil, plant litter, and sediment) of three landscapes (Atlantic Forest, pasture, and agricultural area) in a watershed in northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Variables analyzed were total Hg, CH3Hg+, organic carbon, total nitrogen, grain size, and surface area. In soil samples, total Hg levels were the highest in agricultural soil followed by forest soil and pasture (97.3, 87.6, and 77.1 ng g−1, respectively), and CH3Hg+ was lower than 1.7%. Total Hg levels in leaf litter varied between 22.6 and 34.2 ng g−1, and CH3Hg+ was 4.37%. In sediment, Hg (60–180 ng g−1) and CH3Hg+ (

Aquatic ecosystems in the Amazon are exposed to mercury, mostly from natural sources. Hg accumulation in fish tissues poses a risk to the local population since fish is one of the main sources of protein in the region. The aim of this study was to evaluate Hg distribution in demersal and pelagic carnivorous fish between seasons in Puruzinho Lake in the Brazilian Amazon. Total Hg was quantified in 221 individuals of 8 species obtained during the high water and low water seasons. Two-way ANOVA indicated an interaction between foraging habitat and season. During high water, total Hg concentrations were similar between demersal and pelagic fish, while in low water, total Hg levels were higher in demersal fish. Pelagic and demersal fishes’ Hg levels were similar between the two seasons.

Hg accumulation in fish is influenced by several factors including seasonality. In the Amazon, ecosystems are marked by strong seasonal variation in precipitation, which leads to drastic changes in the water level of lakes and rivers. The aim of this study was to evaluate Hg levels in muscle of detritivorous, herbivorous and omnivorous fish from an Amazon lake (Madeira River Basin, Amazonas, Brazil) over four seasons (rising water, high water, falling water and low water). We hypothesized that total Hg concentration varies during the seasons. The results indicate that total Hg levels in detritivorous fish were higher in rising and low water seasons while in herbivorous and omnivorous fish the total Hg concentration was higher during the rising water season. The hypothesis was supported by the results. Additionally, the study provides evidence that Hg levels in fish with different feeding habits are influenced by the flood pulse of the Amazon region.

This study evaluated the levels of As, Cd, and Pb in muscle and liver the cattle and chicken. The risk was estimated for the adult population of a midsized city in southeast Brazil, concerning the tolerable ingestion and cancer risk. Samples of muscle and liver (cattle and chicken) were collected (n = 250). Samples of mineral supplements for cattle (n = 4) and chicken feed samples (n = 4) were evaluated as one of many potential source of contamination. Muscle, liver, mineral supplement, and feed samples were dissolved in acid medium and analyzed by ICP-OES. Daily muscle and liver intake was estimated using a questionnaire (N = 427). Daily intake of trace elements by the population based on the consumption of cattle muscle, cattle liver, chicken muscle, and chicken liver was low, corresponding to 2.76%, 0.33%, 2.12%, and 0.22% of the Tolerable Intake defined by the WHO for As; 0.54%, 0.29% 0.55%, 0.01%, for Cd; and 0.80%, 0.07%, 0.62%, 0.02%, for Pb. The mean of total ingestion of As, Cd and Pb was 5.43%, 1.18% and 1.51%, respectively of Tolerable Intake defined by WHO. Cancer risk was lower than 5 × 10−5 year−1. The results indicate that the muscle and liver consumption is a source of As, Cd, and Pb. Consumers that ingest cattle and chicken muscle need attention in terms the risk of cancer related to intake of As and Cd. Feed and mineral supplementation remain as one of many sources of exposure of As, Cd, and Pb.

Damming rivers to construct hydroelectric reservoirs results in a series of impacts on the biogeochemical Hg cycle. For example, modifying the hydrodynamics of a natural watercourse can result in the suspension and transport of Hg deposits in the water column, which represents an exposure risk for biota. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influences of seasonality on the dispersion of total Hg in the Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP)-Samuel Reservoir (Porto Velho/Brazil). Sampling campaigns were performed during the three following hydrological periods characteristic of the region: low (Oct/2011), ebbing (May/2012), and high (Feb/2013) water. Sediment profiles, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and aquatic macrophytes (Eicchornia crassipes and Oryza spp.) were collected, and their Hg concentrations and isotopic and elemental C and N signatures were determined. The drainage basin significantly influenced the SPM compositions during all the periods, with a small autochthonous influence from the reservoir during the low water. The highest SPM Hg concentrations inside the reservoir were observed during the high water period, suggesting that the hydrodynamics of this environment favor the suspension of fine SPM, which has a higher Hg adsorption capacity. The Hg concentrations in the sediment profiles were ten times lower than those in the SPM, indicating that large particles with low Hg concentrations were deposited to form the bottom sediment. Hg concentrations were higher in aquatic macrophyte roots than in their leaves and appeared to contribute to the formation of SPM during the low water period. In this environment, Hg transport mainly occurs in SPM from the Jamari River drainage basin, which is the primary source of Hg in this environment.

Environmental pollutants affect fish species differently because their routes of exposure make them more critical to a specific group regarding foraging habits or food preferences. However, the association between local problems and environmental conditions makes a particular species more suitable for use in monitoring programs. Thus, this study compared muscle accumulation of metals (Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ti and Zn) and toxicogenetic damage to three neotropical species from the Itapemirim River Basin (Brazil) with distinct foraging habits and feeding preferences: Geophagus brasiliensis (benthopelagic - omnivorous); Harttia sp. (benthic - detritivorous); and Leporinus copellandii (pelagic - omnivorous). There was seasonal influence on muscle metal concentrations: Ba and Mn concentrations in G. brasiliensis, Cr in Harttia sp. and Zn, Al and Fe in L. copellandii increased during the rainy season. G. brasiliensis was the most sensitive species, since it had a statistically higher prevalence of erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities, which was influenced by seasonality. This result might be an effect of its benthopelagic habits, which favors contact with a larger group of contaminants due to its interaction with both water column and sediment. The present study showed the differential sensitivity of fish species and that the combination of chemical analysis of pollutants with evaluation of toxicogenetic responses helps to choose the best species for field studies.

Floodplain systems are widespread in the Amazon and several studies have evaluated mercury biogeochemistry in these systems. The Amazon region can be considered a “hotspot” for the study of mercury (Hg), due to the naturally high concentration of the pollutant in its old soils and the anthropogenic emissions from small-scale gold mining activities. The periodic flooding influences the availability and distribution of Hg contamination. Therefore, it is possible that flooding can influence accumulation of Hg in fish. The aim of this study was to evaluate total Hg (THg) concentration in four seasons (rising water, high water, falling water and low water) in six fish guilds in a lentic part of a floodplain system (Puruzinho Lake). The present study evaluated the concentration of six trace elements in processed meat products and in meat cuts. We also assessed the risk associated with the consumption of these foods based on the estimated daily intake (EDI) of these elements. Fifty-eight processed meat and 148 meat cuts samples were analyzed using ICP-OES. As and Cd were not detected in any sample of processed meat. The highest mean level of lead was observed in frankfurters (0.056 μg g−1), which is half the maximum permissible level. For Cr, the highest mean concentrations were detected in chicken nuggets and beef hamburger (0.121 and 0.105 μg g−1, respectively), which are above the allowed limit. The comparison between the impact of a diet restricted to processed meats with a diet restricted to meats cuts showed that the individuals following the latter are exposed to higher amounts of the trace elements analyzed.

Total mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) circulation in a connected river-floodplain system composed of two black water (a small forest river, igarape, and Cunia Lake) and a white water body (Madeira River), located in the Madeira River Basin were evaluated during the rising-water, early and late falling-water periods. We assessed organic matter (C and N composition, (C:N)a; and δ13C isotopic signature), and physical and chemical influences (pH, dissolved O2, electric conductivity) in relationship to Hg and MeHg concentrations. Hg and MeHg concentrations in a sediment profile and three aquatic macrophytes (E. crassipes, E. azuera and Oryza sp.) were measured. Igarape and Cunia Lake showed higher Hg and MeHg concentrations (115–709; 10–25 ng g−1) in the suspended particulate matter compared (SPM) compared to the Madeira River (Hg: 5–16; MeHg: 0.2–0.3 ng g−1), partially independent of seasonality (p = 0.06). Food is the main source of toxic metals like mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) to humans. This study evaluated the accumulation and translocation of Cd and Hg in a soil-plant system in four tomato plantations and assessed the risk associated with ingestion of these metals. Ten soil samples (rhizosphere) and 10 samples of plant tissues (leaf, ripe fruit, green fruit, and roots) were collected in each plantation. Spatial variation in Cd and Hg concentrations was negligible. The Cd level in rhizosphere was lower in comparison with that of plant tissues. Hg levels in rhizosphere were similar to roots and higher than the value observed in aerial parts of plants. The Cd bioconcentration factor was approximately five times higher compared to that of Hg. Approximately 93% and 48.6% of Cd and Hg accumulated in roots reached aerial parts, respectively. Our results indicate that tomato readily absorbs Cd accumulated in soil, translocating it to aerial parts. Comparatively, the absorption of Hg is not efficient. Levels of Cd in tomatoes were over 17 times higher than the maximum residual levels in 57.5% of ripe fruits and in 27.5% of green tomatoes.

The increase in global demand for electric energy is reflected in plans to construct numerous hydroelectric dams in South America that can cause chronic ecological impacts if not built and managed correctly. One of the main impacts generated by hydropower dams is the accumulation of Hg chemical species in their reservoir compartments and the downstream transport of these contaminants. Hg circulation in these environments has been studied for 27 years and this review brings a synthesis of the dynamics that are now well established, so that future studies can focus on gaps and inconsistent results in the literature. The topics cover the methylation process of Hg, its transfer along the trophic chain and the impacts downstream from dams. In addition, meta-analyses are used to propose regression models that explain Hg dispersion in environmental compartments of reservoirs, using as predictors morphological, spatial and temporal aspects of these environments.

Arsenic (As) is widely studied in several countries due to its toxicity to biota in the environment. Arsenic sources may be natural or anthropogenic, and the mobility of the element is ruled by physicochemical conditions that also define the dominant As species in the environment. Arsenic levels are evaluated in various abiotic and biotic environmental samples. The highest As levels are observed in sediment, from where it may be mobilized into the aquifers. This article reviews studies about As in the world but with emphasis on studies performed in Brazil, a country where continental water bodies are a common geographic feature. We reviewed 64 studies published between 1985 and 2016. The results indicate that in recent years more studies have been conducted to determine As levels in foods and human samples as a tool to evaluate the exposure of populations and identify potential sources. In Brazil, the main problems associated with contamination with As are the use of wood preservatives and herbicides as well as the impact caused by mining. Also, the precarious character of sewage treatment systems contributes to the contamination of water bodies.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the isotopic profile and mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish (carnivores, omnivores and detritivores) in the lower portion of the rio Paraíba do Sul watershed, southeastern Brazil. Carbon (δ13C) isotopic analyses revealed that pelagic and benthonic sources are part of the feeding of the fish from the different guilds (-14.0 to -24.8 ‰). The benthic sources are usually enriched in δ13C (-16.9‰, from watershed runoff) compared to pelagic sources because the phytoplankton, important primary producer that supports several pelagic chains, has δ13C signature lighter (-23.9‰). The nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic signatures indicated that most guilds were at the same trophic position (10.0 to 15.5 ‰), except for pelagic omnivorous fish, which had a lower trophic position. Niche overlap was observed among pelagic and demersal carnivorous fish, demersal omnivorous fish, and demersal detritivorous fish. The lower isotopic niche breadth of pelagic carnivorous fish reveals the specialized resource use by this guild. Hg concentrations (ng g-1 dry weight) differed significantly between demersal carnivorous fish (185.3 dry weight; 27.8 wet weight) and demersal omnivorous fish (277.9 dry weight; 41.7 wet weight) and between pelagic omnivorous fish (197.2 dry weight; 29.6 wet weight) and demersal omnivorous fish due to (1) differences in food sources: guilds that fed on bottom resources were more affected by contamination because the sediment is an important Hg accumulator in the study area, and (2) because of its trophic positions. Considering that the fish consumed prey of similar trophic positions, the guilds did not show a well-defined food hierarchy. Therefore, in this study, there was no clear relationship between Hg and δ15N. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o perfil isotópico e as concentrações de mercúrio (Hg) em peixes (carnívoros, onívoros e detritívoros) na bacia inferior do rio Paraíba do Sul, sudeste do Brasil. As análises isotópicas de carbono (δ13C) revelaram participação de fontes pelágica e bentônica na alimentação dos peixes das diferentes guildas (-14,0 a -24,8 ‰). As fontes bentônicas são usualmente mais enriquecidas em δ13C (-16,9‰, derivado do escoamento superficial da bacia de drenagem) comparadas às fontes pelágicas pois, o fitoplâncton, importante produtor primário que suporta inúmeras cadeias pelágicas, tem assinatura de δ13C mais leve (-23,9‰). As assinaturas isotópicas de nitrogênio (δ15N) indicaram que a maioria das guildas estava no mesmo nível trófico (10,0 a 15,5 ‰), exceto os peixes onívoros pelágicos cuja posição trófica foi inferior. Observou-se sobreposição de nicho entre peixes carnívoros pelágicos e demersais, onívoros demersais, e detritívoros demersais. A menor amplitude de nicho isotópico dos peixes carnívoros pelágicos revela o uso de recursos especializados por esta guilda. A concentração de Hg (ng g-1 peso seco) diferiu significativamente entre peixes carnívoros demersais (185,3 peso seco; 27,8 peso úmido) e onívoros demersais (277,9 peso seco; 41,7 peso úmido), e entre peixes onívoros pelágicos (197,2 peso seco; 29,6 peso úmido) e onívoros demersais devido a (1) diferenças nas fontes alimentares: guildas que utilizaram recursos de fundo foram mais afetadas pela contaminação pois o sedimento é um importante acumulador de Hg na área de estudo, e (2) por causa das suas posições tróficas. Tendo em vista que os peixes consumiram presas com níveis tróficos semelhantes, as guildas não apresentaram uma hierarquia alimentar definida. Desse modo, no presente estudo não se verificou uma relação clara entre Hg e δ15N.

Bioaccumulation of mercury and methylmercury in fish represents a serious risk to human beings. Extreme climate events like droughts may increase the trophic transfer of contaminants and net methylation of mercury. The present study assessed the influence of the 2014 drought on total mercury and methylmercury levels in fish from the lower Paraiba do Sul river basin. Contaminant levels were compared for Pimelodus fur, Pachyurus adspersus, Pimelodella lateristriga, Oligosarcus hepsetus, and Crenicichla lacustris captured in five sites in 2013 (N = 212) and 2014 (N = 231). The results indicate that levels of contaminants were higher during the drought in most species. Rainfall was weakly and negatively correlated with total mercury levels in most of the species. The weak relationship between these two variables was due to the indirect influence of rainfall on mercury bioaccumulation. In summary, drought increased the levels of two contaminants in fish.

Aims: Effects of salt stress on the physiology of Salvinia auriculata were investigated. Method Plants were supplemented with 0, 50, 100 and 150 mmol L-1 NaCl and incubated for 5 days. NO content was evaluated after 2 hours and 5 days. Photosynthetic pigments, proline and nutrients were analyzed after 5 days. Major Results Higher chlorophyll a content was observed in plants treated with 50 mmol L-1, decreasing in higher NaCl concentrations, while chorophyll b content decreased with increasing NaCl concentrations. Exposure to 50 mmol L-1 NaCl increased biomass, while higher concentrations caused loss of biomass. Ca, K and Mg decreased with increasing NaCl concentrations, and the Na/K ratio was significantly increased at 150 mmol L-1 NaCl. Proline increased significantly at 150 mmol L-1. Extracellular NO content increased after 2 hours, with significantly higher NO concentrations in roots observed at 50 mmol L-1. Decreases in NO content were observed after 5 days. Conclusions The results indicate that moderate salinity induces NO production earlier during incubation, probably associated to signaling for the production of compounds that assist in stress tolerance. At higher concentrations, this tolerance is reduced. This allows for further understanding of the physiological and biochemical mechanisms associated with the adaptation of this macrophyte to saline conditions, which, in turn, affect this species ecology and distribution in coastal areas. Resumo Objetivos: Efeitos do estresse salino sobre a fisiologia de Salvinia auriculata foram investigados. Metodologia As plantas foram expostas a 0, 50, 100 e 150 mmol de NaCl L-1 e incubadas durante 5 dias. O conteúdo de NO foi avaliado após 2 horas e 5 dias. Pigmentos fotossintéticos, prolina e nutrientes foram analisados após 5 dias. Resultados Principais Observou-se maior teor de clorofila a em plantas tratadas com 50 mmol L-1, diminuindo em concentrações mais altas, enquanto o conteúdo de clorofila b diminuiu com o aumento das concentrações de NaCl. A exposição a 50 mmol L-1 de NaCl aumento a biomassa, enquanto concentrações mais elevadas causaram perda de biomassa. Ca, K e Mg diminuíram com o aumento das concentrações de NaCl, e a razão Na/K foi significativamente aumentada em 150 mmol L-1 NaCl. A prolina aumentou significativamente a 150 mmol L-1. O conteúdo extracelular de NO aumentou após 2 horas, e diminuiu após 5 dias. Após 2 horas, concentrações significativamente maiores nas raízes foram observadas a 50 mmol L-1, enquanto após 5 dias diminuições foram observadas. Conclusões Os resultados indicam que a salinidade moderada induz a produção de NO durante a incubação, possivelmente associada à sinalização para a produção de compostos que auxiliem na tolerância à salinidade. Em concentrações superiores esta tolerância é reduzida. Com isso, é possível compreender melhor os mecanismos fisiológicos e bioquímicos associados a essa adaptação em macrófitas sob condições salinas, que afetam sua ecologia e distribuição em áreas costeiras
