Abstract

Many users have shown increased postural instability while using Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) as HMDs block their real-world vision. People with balance impairments are especially more affected by this as they depend more on their visual cues to maintain their balance. In addition, balance is a good indication of cybersickness according to postural instability theory. In this research, we have investigated how to use additional visual cues to improve postural stability. Through conducting one user study in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), we have studied the effect of a Static Rest Frame (SRF) on postural stability in persons with balance impairments due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Results indicate that an SRF significantly improves postural stability in VR and AR for users with MS. Based on these results, we propose guidelines for designing more accessible VR and AR systems for persons with balance impairments.

Abstract

A high level of transparency in reported research is critical for several reasons, such as ensuring an acceptable level of trustworthiness and enabling replication. Transparency in qualitative research permits the identification of specific circumstances which are associated with findings and observations. Thus, transparency is important for the repeatability of original studies and for explorations of the transferability of original findings. There has been no investigation into levels of transparency in reported technology education research to date. With a position that increasing transparency would be beneficial, this article presents an analysis of levels of transparency in contemporary technology education research studies which employed interviews within their methodologies, and which were published within the "International Journal of Technology and Design Education and Design and Technology Education: An International Journal" (n = 38). The results indicate room for improvement, especially in terms of documenting researcher positionality, determinations of data saturation, and how power imbalances were managed. A discussion is presented on why it is important to improve levels of transparency in reported studies, and a guide on areas to make transparent is presented for qualitative and quantitative research.

Abstract

Abstract Background CD14 has been postulated to play a role in chlamydial immunity and immunopathology. There is evidence to support this role in human infections but its function in a mouse model has not been investigated. Methods Female CD14 gene knockout and C57BL/6J wild type mice were infected intravaginally with Chlamydia muridarum. The infection course was monitored by detection of viable chlamydiae from serially collected cervical-vaginal swabs. The sequela of tubal factor infertility was assessed using hydrosalpinx formation as a surrogate marker. Results A significantly abbreviated infection course was observed in the CD14 gene knockout mice but hydrosalpinx formation occurred at similar rates between the two groups. Conclusion Involvement of CD14 during chlamydial infection impedes infection resolution but this does not affect the sequela of infertility as assessed by hydrosalpinx formation.

21. Characterizing Orphan Transactions in the Bitcoin Network

Abstract

Orphan transactions are those whose parental income-sources are missing at the time that they are processed. These transactions are not propagated to other nodes until all of their missing parents are received, and they thus end up languishing in a local buffer until evicted or their parents are found. Although there has been little work in the literature on characterizing the nature and impact of such orphans, it is intuitive that they may affect throughput on the Bitcoin network. This work thus seeks to methodically research such effects through a measurement campaign of orphan transactions on live Bitcoin nodes. Our data show that, surprisingly, orphan transactions tend to have fewer parents on average than non-orphan transactions. Moreover, the salient features of their missing parents are a lower fee and larger size than their non-orphan counterparts, resulting in a lower transaction fee per byte. Finally, we note that the network overhead incurred by these orphan transactions can be significant, exceeding 17% when using the default orphan memory pool size (100 transactions). However, this overhead can be made negligible, without significant computational or memory demands, if the pool size is merely increased to 1000 transactions.

25. Improving Bitcoin's Resilience to Churn

Abstract

Efficient and reliable block propagation on the Bitcoin network is vital for ensuring the scalability of this peer-to-peer network. To this end, several schemes have been proposed over the last few years to speed up the block propagation, most notably the compact block protocol (BIP 152). Despite this, we show experimental evidence that nodes that have recently joined the network may need about ten days until this protocol becomes 90% effective. This problem is endemic for nodes that do not have persistent network connectivity. We propose to mitigate this ineffectiveness by maintaining mempool synchronization among Bitcoin nodes. For this purpose, we design and implement into Bitcoin a new prioritized data synchronization protocol, called FalafelSync. Our experiments show that FalafelSync helps intermittently connected nodes to maintain better consistency with more stable nodes, thereby showing promise for improving block propagation in the broader network. In the process, we have also developed an effective logging mechanism for bitcoin nodes we release for public use.

29. Identifying the impact of water constraints on agricultural productivity in hillside contexts.

Abstract

Using a unique panel dataset based on two census rounds, we estimate the impact of irrigation gaps and drought on yields of paddy, maize, and other crops in Bhutan, an understudied country. We utilize a recently‐developed spatial first differences (SFD) approach to identify the impacts of water‐related constraints and compare these results from a panel fixed effects (FE) approach. We find that irrigation gaps reduce paddy yields and droughts reduce maize yields. Estimates from the SFD model are found to be consistent compared to those from the panel FE model. Water‐related constraints also reduce yields of vegetable crops, and other constraints such as labor shortages, wild animals, insects, and diseases reduce yields of cereal crops. 45. Role of tenecteplase in ischemic stroke after 4.5 hours: an evaluation of the TRACE-III trial.

Abstract

Tenecteplase (TNK), as a thrombolytic treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS), has been found to be effective when used within 4.5 hours of symptom onset. However, the efficacy of TNK after 4.5 hours is not well established, especially in patients with large vessel occlusion and with no access to thrombectomy. In this article, we will discuss the results of the recently published TRACE-III trial. The study involved 516 patients with large vessel occlusion, either proximal middle cerebral artery or internal carotid artery, with salvageable brain tissue and no endovascular thrombectomy access. Key safety outcomes included symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and death. TNK treatment resulted in a higher percentage of patients with a modified Rankin scale score of 0 or 1 at 90 days than standard medical treatment. Mortality at 90 days was 13.3% with TNK and 13.1% with standard medical treatment. The trial found that TNK treatment for Chinese patients with ischemic stroke resulted in less disability and similar survival compared to standard medical treatment. However, there was a higher incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage within 36 hours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
