Abstract

Subsurface pore pressure studies are crucial for understanding the geomechanical behaviours of the geological formations and for preventing the failure conditions of the rocks. Although the interplay between pore pressure changes and rock deformation is nowadays widely treated in the literature, the magnitude and the distribution of the fluid pressure regimes at depth is not completely clear, especially in those areas, such as the fold and thrust belts, characterised by a complex tectonostratigraphic setting. The proposed study deals with the subsurface fluid dynamics of the Irpinia region, located in the Southern Apennines (Italy) and marked by intense tectonic activity and seismicity. In that area, the most recent and notable Italian earthquake occurred in November 1980 (6.9 Mw) and caused significant damage and loss of life. Irpinia area is also a site of deep gas rising to the surface and exhibits clear correlations between crustal deformation and groundwater circulation. The pressure analysis herein proposed has been performed using direct and indirect pressure measurements collected from 13 hydrocarbon exploration wells available in open source. It provides a detailed description of the methodology used to identify where overpressures develop within the sediments of both autochthonous and allochthonous layers. It also investigates the relationship between pore pressures, gas occurrences found at well sites, and the possible sources of overpressures. The results show that the carbonate successions of the South-Apennines and Apulian Platforms are characterized by predominantly hydrostatic pressure regimes, while the shale-rich successions of the Lagonegrese pelagic basin and the Miocene-Pliocene foredeep basin locally demonstrate moderate overpressured gradients. Finally, the highest overpressures are observed in the evaporitic deposits and Pliocene shales.

Abstract

COVID-19 negatively affected surgical activity, but the potential benefits resulting from adopted measures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in surgical activity and potential benefit from COVID-19 measures in perspective of Italian surgeons on behalf of SPIGC. A nationwide online survey on surgical practice before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic was conducted in March–April 2022 (NCT:05323851). Effects of COVID-19 hospital-related measures on surgical patients’ management and personal professional development across surgical specialties were explored. Data on demographics, pre-operative/peri-operative/post-operative management, and professional development were collected. Outcomes were matched with the corresponding volume. Four hundred and seventy-three respondents were included in final analysis across 14 surgical specialties. Since SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, application of telematic consultations (4.1% vs. 21.6%; p < 0.0001) and diagnostic evaluations (16.4% vs. 42.2%; p < 0.0001) increased. Elective surgical activities significantly reduced and surgeons opted more frequently for conservative management with a possible indication for elective (26.3% vs. 35.7%; p < 0.0001) or urgent (20.4% vs. 38.5%; p < 0.0001) surgery. All new COVID-related measures are perceived to be maintained in the future. Surgeons’ personal education online increased from 12.6% (pre-COVID) to 86.6% (post-COVID; p < 0.0001). Online educational activities are considered a beneficial effect from COVID pandemic (56.4%). COVID-19 had a great impact on surgical specialties, with significant reduction of operation volume. However, some forced changes turned out to be benefits. Isolation measures pushed the use of telemedicine and telemetric devices for outpatient practice and favored communication for educational purposes and surgeon–patient/family communication. Abstract

We present the first 3D crustal model of the epicentral region of the 1980, Mw 6.9, normal‐faulting Irpinia earthquake (southern Italy) determined by jointly interpreting the CROP‐04 deep seismic profile, a grid of commercial seismic lines, deep exploration wells, and a high‐resolution Local Earthquake Tomography. Despite numerous seismotectonic surveys and source studies of the background seismicity recorded by dense networks, a complete 3D geological model of the mid‐upper crust was still lacking in the region. The architecture of the Neogene fold‐and‐thrust belt is also debated, with competing thin‐ and thick‐skinned tectonic interpretations. We use the 3D geological model derived from subsurface exploration data to interpret the upper crustal tomographic velocities in terms of rock physical properties, while Vp and Vp/Vs anomalies provide inferences on the deep structural setting down to 12 km depth. We find that a thick‐skinned deformation style allows explaining the geometry of Pliocene fold‐and‐thrust systems deforming the Apulian carbonates but also deeper Permo‐Triassic metasediments and the Paleozoic crystalline femic basement. Inherited compressional structures and lithological heterogeneities control background seismicity occurring at two crustal levels. Fluid‐driven shallow seismicity (<4–6 km) concentrates in a high‐Vp/Vs wedge of fractured, brine‐saturated Mesozoic stiff rocks delimited by the 1980 earthquake faults. Deep seismicity (9–14 km) clusters instead within the low‐Vp/Vs crystalline basement underneath the Apulian carbonate ramp‐anticlines. Commercial seismic data allow us to identify the Irpinia Fault, the main fault ruptured by the 1980 earthquake, reinforcing its previous interpretations as an immature structure with subtle geological and geophysical evidence. Abstract

COVID-19 negatively affected surgical activity, but the potential benefits resulting from adopted measures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in surgical activity and potential benefit from COVID-19 measures in perspective of Italian surgeons on behalf of SPIGC. A nationwide online survey on surgical practice before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic was conducted in March–April 2022 (NCT:05323851). Effects of COVID-19 hospital-related measures on surgical patients’ management and personal professional development across surgical specialties were explored. Data on demographics, pre-operative/peri-operative/post-operative management, and professional development were collected. Outcomes were matched with the corresponding volume. Four hundred and seventy-three respondents were included in final analysis across 14 surgical specialties. Since SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, application of telematic consultations (4.1% vs. 21.6%; p < 0.0001) and diagnostic evaluations (16.4% vs. 42.2%; p < 0.0001) increased. Elective surgical activities significantly reduced and surgeons opted more frequently for conservative management with a possible indication for elective (26.3% vs. 35.7%; p < 0.0001) or urgent (20.4% vs. 38.5%; p < 0.0001) surgery. All new COVID-related measures are perceived to be maintained in the future. Surgeons’ personal education online increased from 12.6% (pre-COVID) to 86.6% (post-COVID; p < 0.0001). Online educational activities are considered a beneficial effect from COVID pandemic (56.4%). COVID-19 had a great impact on surgical specialties, with significant reduction of operation volume. However, some forced changes turned out to be benefits. Isolation measures pushed the use of telemedicine and telemetric devices for outpatient practice and favored communication for educational purposes and surgeon–patient/family communication. Abstract

We present the first rupture models of the two mainshocks of the 2012 northern Italy sequence, determined by jointly inverting seismic and geodetic data. We aim at providing new insights into the mainshocks for which contrasting seismotectonic interpretations are proposed in literature. Sources' geometric parameters were constrained by seismic reflection profiles, 3‐D relocations and focal mechanisms of mainshocks/aftershocks. Site‐specific velocity profiles were used to model accelerograms affected by strong propagation effects related to the Po basin. Our source models differ significantly from previous ones relying on either seismic or geodetic data. Their comparison against geological sections and aftershock distribution provides new insights about the ruptured thrust faults. The May 20th Mw6.1 mainshock activated the Middle Ferrara thrust‐ramp dipping ∼45° SSW‐wards, breaking a main eastern slip patch 4–15 km deep in Mesozoic carbonates (maximum slip 0.7–0.8 m) and Paleozoic‐Triassic basement rocks, and a small western patch in the basement. The May 29th Mw6.0 mainshock featured two separated asperities along the Mirandola thrust‐ramp dipping ∼42° S‐wards: an eastern asperity 4–15 km deep in Mesozoic carbonates and basement rocks (maximum slip 0.7 m) and a deeper western one (7–16 km depth) mainly in the basement (slip peak 0.8 m). On‐fault aftershocks were concentrated within the basement and Mesozoic carbonates, devoiding high‐slip zones. Slip and aftershock distribution was controlled by the rheological transition between Mesozoic carbonates and Cenozoic sediments. Unlike previous thin‐skinned tectonic interpretations, our results point to a complex rupture process along moderately dipping (40°–45°) thrust‐ramps deeply rooted into the Paleozoic crystalline basement. Plain Language Summary: The two M6 mainshocks of the 2012 Italy sequence are the strongest earthquakes ever observed in the Po Plain, a strategic region for the Italian economy. The mainshocks ruptured blind thrust‐faults, however their source models and seismotectonic interpretation are still debated because the thrust‐system architecture is controversial. Contrasting thick‐skinned and thin‐skinned tectonic models are proposed. In thick‐skinned interpretations, shortening is accommodated by thrust‐ramps rooted into the crystalline basement that represent main seismogenic structures, whereas in thin‐skinned interpretations, shortening and seismicity are controlled by listric faults splaying out from dècollement levels in the sedimentary crust. A comprehensive analysis of the mainshocks' source represents an opportunity to provide new insights into the seismogenesis in northern Italy and on a broader scale into seismotectonics of thrust‐and‐fold belts. We get a complete picture of the mainshocks kinematics by jointly inverting, for the first time, seismic and geodetic data, and unravel rupture heterogeneities not resolved by previous studies. By integrating source models with aftershock locations and geological models, we propose a comprehensive seismotectonic interpretation of the sequence. We conclusively identify the ruptured faults that correspond to thrust‐ramps rooted into the crystalline basement and evidence the key role played by lithological changes in the rupture process. Abstract

The RETRACE-3D project (centRal italy EarThquakes integRAted Crustal model) focused on the revision of all the available geological and geophysical data in the area interested by the 2016-2018 seismic sequence of central Italy, with the final aim to reconstruct a reliable and consistent 3D geological model of that area. It is based on a collaboration, which was framed into a formal agreement, between Dipartimento della Protezione Civile (the Italian Civil Protection Department), Istituto di Geologia Ambientale e Geoingegneria, and Istituto per il Rilevamento Elettromagnetico of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, and Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale. The agreement purpose was to develop a project aimed at the geological and seismotectonic characterisation of the crustal volume hosting that seismic sequence. We present and discuss the approach, methodology and results of the project. The 3D geological model of the study area is developed in detail down to a depth of about 12 km, and extended to the Moho based on available regional-scale information. The model is available on the RETRACE-3D project website (www.retrace3d.it).

Abstract

Background: Multiple modifiable risk factors for late complications in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD), including hyperglycemia, hypertension and dyslipidemia, increase the risk of a poor outcome. DKD is associated with a very high cardiovascular risk, which requires simultaneous treatment of these risk factors by implementing an intensified multifactorial treatment approach. However, the efficacy of a multifactorial intervention on major fatal/non-fatal cardiovascular events (MACEs) in DKD patients has been poorly investigated. Methods: Nephropathy in Diabetes type 2 (NID-2) study is a multicentre, cluster-randomized, open-label clinical trial enrolling 395 DKD patients with albuminuria, diabetic retinopathy (DR) and negative history of CV events in 14 Italian diabetology clinics. Centres were randomly assigned to either Standard-of-Care (SoC) (n = 188) or multifactorial intensive therapy (MT, n = 207) of main cardiovascular risk factors (blood pressure < 130/80 mmHg, glycated haemoglobin < 7%, LDL, HDL and total cholesterol < 100 mg/dL, > 40/50 mg/dL for men/women and < 175 mg/dL, respectively). Primary endpoint was MACEs occurrence by end of follow-up phase. Secondary endpoints included single components of primary endpoint and all-cause death. Results: At the end of intervention period (median 3.84 and 3.40 years in MT and SoC group, respectively), targets achievement was significantly higher in MT. During 13.0 years (IQR 12.4–13.3) of follow-up, 262 MACEs were recorded (116 in MT vs. 146 in SoC). The adjusted Cox shared-frailty model demonstrated 53% lower risk of MACEs in MT arm (adjusted HR 0.47, 95%CI 0.30–0.74, P = 0.001). Similarly, all-cause death risk was 47% lower (adjusted HR 0.53, 95%CI 0.29–0.93, P = 0.027). Conclusion: MT induces a remarkable benefit on the risk of MACEs and mortality in high-risk DKD patients. 20. Controlled source nonlinear tomography: a powerful tool to constrain tectonic models of the Southern Apennines orogenic wedge, Italy

Abstract

The anatomy of the Southern Apennines is a matter of compelling debate. Both thick-and thin-skinned tectonic models are proposed due to paucity of deep seismic constraints. We present new and well-defined information on the velocity structure of the mountain range by using an innovative nonlinear tomographic technique applied to refraction-wide-angle reflection data. The velocity-interface model shows a high-velocity region, with values exceeding 7 km/s, at 8-9 km depth. Such large velocities cannot be related to sedimentary rocks, and imply the presence of shallow crystalline rocks, i.e., the basement involvement in the thrust belt. The integration of our results with other geophysical data (local earthquake tomography, Bouguer and magnetic anomalies) confirms this interpretation, which strongly supports thick-skinned tectonics and has significant implications for the seismotectonics and hydrocarbon potential of the Southern Apennines. Our inversion approach can be effective in other orogenic wedges, when seismic reflection profiling fails to uniquely resolve deep complex structures. We provide the first 3‐D resistivity image of the Pian Grande di Castelluccio basin, the main Quaternary depocenter in the hangingwall of the Mt.Vettore–Mt. Bove normal fault system (VBFS), responsible for the October 30, 2016 Mw 6.5 Norcia earthquake (central Italy). The subsurface structure of the basin is poorly known, and its relation with the VBFS remains debated. Using the recent Fullwaver technology, we carried out a high‐resolution 2‐D transect crossing the 2016 coseismic ruptures coupled with an extensive 3‐D survey with the aim of: (a) mapping the subsurface of the basin‐bounding splays of the VBFS and the downdip extent of intrabasin faults; (b) imaging the infill and pre‐Quaternary substratum down to ∼1 km depth. The 2‐D resistivity section highlights under the coseismic ruptures a main dip‐slip fault zone with conjugated splays. The 3‐D resistivity model suggests that the basin consists of two depocenters (∼300 and ∼600 m deep, respectively) filled with silty sands and gravels (resistivity <300 Ωm), bounded and cross‐cut by NNE‐, WNW‐, and NNW‐trending faults with throws of ∼200–400 m. We hypothesize that the NNE‐trending system acted during the early basin development, followed by NNW‐trending and currently active splays of the VBFS that overprint pre‐existing structures and locally control the infill architecture. Moreover, beneath the basin we detect a shallow NW‐dipping blind fault. The latter is likely a hangingwall splay of the adjacent regional Mts. Sibillini Thrust, which may have been partly involved in the rupture process of the Norcia mainshock. Abstract

We present the first 3D crustal model of the epicentral region of the 1980, Mw6.9, normal‐faulting Irpinia earthquake (southern Italy) determined by jointly interpreting the CROP‐04 deep seismic profile, a grid of commercial seismic lines, deep exploration wells, and a high‐resolution Local Earthquake Tomography. Despite numerous seismotectonic surveys and source studies of the background seismicity recorded by dense networks, a complete 3D geological model of the mid‐upper crust was still lacking in the region. The architecture of the Neogene fold‐and‐thrust belt is also debated, with competing thin‐ and thick‐skinned tectonic interpretations. We use the 3D geological model derived from subsurface exploration data to interpret the upper crustal tomographic velocities in terms of rock physical properties, while Vpand Vp/Vsanomalies provide inferences on the deep structural setting down to 12 km depth. We find that a thick‐skinned deformation style allows explaining the geometry of Pliocene fold‐and‐thrust systems deforming the Apulian carbonates but also deeper Permo‐Triassic metasediments and the Paleozoic crystalline femic basement. Inherited compressional structures and lithological heterogeneities control background seismicity occurring at two crustal levels. Fluid‐driven shallow seismicity (<4–6 km) concentrates in a high‐Vp/Vswedge of fractured, brine‐saturated Mesozoic stiff rocks delimited by the 1980 earthquake faults. Deep seismicity (9–14 km) clusters instead within the low‐Vp/Vscrystalline basement underneath the Apulian carbonate ramp‐anticlines. Commercial seismic data allow us to identify the Irpinia Fault, the main fault ruptured by the 1980 earthquake, reinforcing its previous interpretations as an immature structure with subtle geological and geophysical evidence. Abstract

Wavefield polarization is investigated using 200 seismograms recorded by a network of 20 stations installed on rock outcrops in the Val d'Agri region that hosts the largest oil fields in the southern Apennines (Italy). Polarization is assessed both in the frequency and time domains through the individual-station horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio and covariance-matrix analysis, respectively. We find that most of the stations show a persistent horizontal polarization of waveforms, with a NE-SW predominant trend. This direction is orthogonal to the general trend of Quaternary normal faults in the region and to the maximum horizontal stress related to the present extensional regime. According to previous studies in other areas, such a directional effect is interpreted as due to the presence of fault-related fracture fields, polarization being orthogonal to their predominant direction. A comparison with S wave anisotropy inferred from shear wave splitting indicates an orthogonal relation between horizontal polarization and fast S wave direction. This suggests that wavefield polarization and fast velocity direction are effects of the same cause: The existence of an anisotropic medium represented by fractured rocks where shear wave velocity is larger in the crack-parallel component and compliance is larger perpendicularly to the crack strike. The latter is responsible for the observed anisotropic pattern of amplitudes of horizontal ground motion in the study area.

Abstract

No data on the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in subjects with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are currently available.The aim of the present study was to estimate the prevalence of ED and its associated causes in a sample of male patients with recently diagnosed DM (24 months) attending a diabetes care center.The study comprised two phases: a cross-sectional analysis and a longitudinal reassessment of the data collected during the first phase. During the first phase, 1503 subjects (mean age 58.7±8.9 yr) from 27 centers were interviewed: 666 (43.3%) reported experiencing ED, 499 of which (mean age 58.8±8.8 yr) agreed to participate in the study (final enrolment rate, 33.3%). Concurrent morbidities were hypertension (55.3%), dyslipidemia (39.5%), and coronary heart disease (7.8%); chronic complications were neuropathy (8.9%), nephropathy (12.6%) and retinopathy (7.6%) in about one third of the sample at enrolment.Overall, about 20% of the patients reported having used ED drugs, but more than 50% had abandoned therapy because of the drug's ineffectiveness or high cost. The prevalence of hypogonadism was 46.9% (total testosterone level, 3.5 ng/ml). Some 20% of patients reported symptoms suggestive of depression.The present study provides data showing a high prevalence of ED, hypogonadism and depressive symptoms among male patients with newly diagnosed T2DM. Further analysis of the data will elucidate the specific determinants of such conditions and their longitudinal significance.

Abstract

Liver is frequently involved and injured in blunt abdominal trauma. Although over the last three decades the management of blunt hepatic trauma has gradually shifted toward nonoperative approach whit a significant reduction in overall mortality, surgery remains the main option for hemodinamically unstable patients whit severe liver injuries. A 16-yr-old male in good health suffered a blunt abdominal trauma from a sport accident falling while playing football resulting in a grade V liver injury according to the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Organ Injury Score. He underwent first to liver packing and next to an early right hepatectomy to arrest the clinical condition impairment In high grade liver injuries, liver resection makes possible to effectively control bleeding, remove necrotic tissue and prevent complications as bile leak. Nevertheless when patient's clinical condition continue to deteriorate despite optimal management a quickly and experienced hands performed hepatectomy may solve the situation.

Abstract

A two-step imaging procedure, including pre-stack depth migration (PSDM) and non-linear multiscale refraction tomography, was applied to dense wide-aperture data with the aim of imaging the causative fault of the 1980, M6.9, Irpinia normal faulting earthquake in a very complex geologic environment. PSDM is often ineffective for ultrashallow imaging (100 m of depth and less) of laterally heterogeneous media because of the difficulty in estimating a correct velocity model for migration. Dense wide-aperture profiling allowed us to build accurate velocity models across the fault zone by multiscale tomography and to record wide-angle reflections from steep reflectors. PSDM provided better imaging with respect to conventional post-stack depth migration, and improved definition of fault geometry and apparent cumulative displacement. Results indicate that this imaging strategy can be very effective for near-surface fault detection and characterization. Fault location and geometry are in agreement with paleoseismic data from two nearby trenches. The estimated vertical fault throw is only 29-38 m. This value, combined with the vertical slip rate determined by trench data, suggests a young age (97-127 kyr) of fault inception. © 2010 by the American Geophysical Union.

Abstract

Introduction: Several data have emphasized the importance of early diagnosis of erectile dysfunction (ED) and meticulous cardiovascular investigation in the type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) patients. Aim: To estimate the prevalence of ED and its associated determinants in a sample of male patients with new or recently diagnosed T2DM. Methods: The SUBITO-DE study is an observational, multicenter, prospective study involving 27 Italian diabetes centers. Male patients recently diagnosed with T2DM were consecutively interviewed by their attending physician at the diabetes care centers and asked whether they had experienced a change in their sexual function or found it unsatisfactory. Those responding positively were then invited to participate in the study. Main Outcome Measure: Several hormonal and biochemical parameters were studied. Results: A nonselected series of 1,503 patients was interviewed, 499 of which (mean age, 58.8±8.8 years) entered the study, yielding a final enrolment rate of 33.3%. ED was classified as mild in 19.4%, mild-to-moderate in 15.4%, moderate in 10.4%, and severe in 21.6% of patients, respectively. In addition, premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, and hypoactive sexual desire (HSD) were comorbid in 28.3%, 32.9%, and 58.4%, respectively. Finally, hypogonadism, showed an estimated prevalence of almost 20%. Both organic (at least one chronic DM-associated complication) and psychological factors (severe depressive symptoms) increased the risk of ED. Severe depressive symptoms were also associated with ejaculatory problems, HSD, and hypogonadism. Conclusions: A high prevalence of sexual dysfunction in men with recently diagnosed T2DM was detected. Early diagnosis of ED could help prevent emotional and physical discomfort in men and aid in identifying reversible cardiovascular risk factors. Abstract

A high-resolution multi-fold wide-angle seismic survey carried out across the Irpinia fault, Southern Italy, yields new information about the shallow structure of this normal fault that was reactivated in 1980. The fault zone is imaged to a depth of about 60 m by using a non-linear tomographic technique that is specially designed to image strongly heterogeneous media. Results confirm the location of the fault, as previously inferred by a trench excavated in soft soils, and clearly delineates a 30-35 m step in the bedrock. This single step is indicative of a narrow fault zone, which corresponds upward to warped soils exposed in the trench, thus demonstrating that the near-surface warping is directly related to a brittle faulting in the bedrock. Assuming that the vertical slip rate yielded by paleoseismic data (0.25-0.35 mm/yr) has been constant since the fault's inception, the latter should date back to about 100-140 kys ago. Such a young age may explain why the Irpinia fault is not associated with evident, large-scale geomorphic indicators of its activity.

Abstract

Rapid-response seismic networks are an important element in the response to seismic crises. They temporarily improve the detection performance of permanent monitoring systems during seismic sequences. The improvement in earthquake detection and location capabilities can be important for decision makers to assess the current situation, and can provide invaluable data for scientific studies related to hazard, tectonics and earthquake physics. Aftershocks and the clustering of the locations of seismic events help to characterize the dimensions of the causative fault. Knowing the number, size and timing of the aftershocks or the clustering seismic events can help in the foreseeing of the characteristics of future seismic sequences in the same tectonic environment. Instrumental rapid response requires a high degree of preparedness. A mission in response to a magnitude (Ml) 6 event with a rupture length of a few tens of kilometers might involve the deployment within hours to days of 30-50 seismic stations in the middle of a disaster area of some hundreds of square kilometers, and the installation of an operational center to help in the logistics and communications. Abstract

International audience; On April 6 (01:32 UTC) 2009 a MW 6.1 normal faulting earthquake struck the axial area of the Abruzzo region in central Italy. The earthquake heavily damaged the city of L'Aquila and its surroundings, causing 308 casualties, 70,000 evacuees and incalculable losses to the cultural heritage. We present the geometry of the fault system composed of two main normal fault planes, reconstructed by means of seismicity distribution: almost 3000 events with ML≥1.9 occurred in the area during 2009. The events have been located with a 1D velocity model we computed for the area by using data of the seismic sequence. The mainshock, located at around a 9.3 km depth beneath the town of L'Aquila, activated a 50o (+/- 3) SW-dipping and ~135o NW-trending normal fault with a length of about 16 km. The aftershocks activated the whole 10 km of the upper crust up to the surface. The geometry of the fault is coherent with the mapped San Demetrio-Paganica and Mt. Stabiata normal faults. The whole normal fault system that reached about 40 km of length by the end of December in the NW-trending direction, was activated within the first few days of the sequence when most of the energetic events occurred. The main shock fault plane was activated by a foreshock sequence that culminated with a MW 4.0 on March 30 (13:38 UTC), showing extensional kinematics with a minor left lateral component. The second major structure, located to the north close to Campotosto village, is controlled by an MW 5.0 event, which occurred on the same day of the main shock (April 6 at 23:15 UTC), and by an MW 5.2 event (April 9 at 00:53 UTC). The fault plane shows a shallower dip angle with respect to the main fault plane, of about 35o with a tendency to flattening towards the deepest portion. Due to the lack of seismicity above a 5 km depth, the connection between this structure and the mapped Monti della Laga fault is not straightforward. This northern segment is recognisable for about 12-14 km of length, always NW-trending and forming a right lateral step with the main fault plane. The result is a en-echelon system overlapping for about 6 km. The seismicity pattern also highlights the activation of numerous minor normal fault segments within the whole fault system. The deepest is located at around a 13-15 km depth, south of the L'Aquila mainshock, and it seems to be antithetic to the main fault plane.

Abstract

A hybrid statistical-deterministic approach has been applied to estimate strong ground motion parameters (PGA, spectral ordinates) in South- Eastern Sicily for a M = 7 earthquake. A number of 100 different rupture processes have been simulated along a composite fault system representing two segments of the Ibleo-Maltese fault scarp. Map at regional scale of mean PGA in the 0.5–20 Hz frequency band shows highest values (0.4–0.5 g) nearby and North of Catania, due to a dominant directivity effect. The COV parameter, which expresses the variability of PGA values as a function of source complexity, is higher in the region nearby and South of the town of Augusta, where, depending on the rupture history, rather large PGA values can be observed (> 0:4 g). PGA attenuation curves suggest that an azimuthal variation could be related to the source extent and directivity. The response and pseudo acceleration spectra are computed for different sites in the town of Catania including an approximate 1D site response. Ground motion amplification effects at high frequency (5–20 Hz) are produced by thin shallow layer of soft clay, loose pyroclastites and fill. We observe small amplification effects, in the frequency ranges 2–3 Hz and 5–10 Hz, in sites where recent alluvia reach a thickness of some tens of meters. Otherwise, sites located on outcrops of massive lavas show moderate attenuation.

Abstract

Benevento, a town of 62000 inhabitants, has been an European test-site for a detailed hazard and microzonation investigation. The town, approximately 13 sq kilometers, is located in the Southern Appennines (Italy), and in the past was affected by several earthquakes. The ancient part of the city is situated on a hill between the rivers Calore and Sabato ; the subsoil consists mainly of conglomerate formations, fluvio-lacustrine deposits and pliocenic clays, the mechanical properties of which have been obtained through detailed geological investigations and a compilation of the existing borehole and laboratory data, as well as through a literature survey. The regional seismic hazard has been estimated by different teams on the basis of the up-to-date seismicity catalogues and attenuation laws, providing uniform hazard response spectra. This information provides the basis for the site effect evaluation, presented in a companion paper.

Abstract

Wastewater injection into a high-rate well in the Val d'Agri oilfield, the largest in onshore Europe, has induced swarm microseismicity since the initiation of disposal in 2006. To investigate the reservoir structure and to track seismicity, we performed a high-spatial resolution local earthquake tomography using 1,281 natural and induced earthquakes recorded by local networks. The properties of the carbonate reservoir (rock fracturing, pore fluid pressure) and inherited faults control the occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of seismicity. A low- Vp, high- Vp/ Vs region under the well represents a fluid saturated fault zone ruptured by induced seismicity. High- Vp, high- Vp/ Vs bumps match reservoir culminations indicating saturated liquid-bearing zones, whereas a very low Vp, low Vp/ Vs anomaly might represent a strongly fractured and depleted zone of the hydrocarbon reservoir characterized by significant fluid withdrawal. The comprehensive picture of the injection-linked seismicity obtained by integrating reservoir-scale tomography, high-precision earthquake locations, and geophysical and injection data suggests that the driving mechanism is the channeling of pore pressure perturbations through a high permeable fault damage zone within the reservoir. The damage zone surrounds a Pliocene reverse fault optimally oriented in the current extensional stress field. The ruptured damage zone measures 2 km along strike and 3 km along dip and is confined between low permeability ductile formations. Injection pressure is the primary parameter controlling seismicity rate. Our study underlines that local earthquake tomography also using wastewater-induced seismicity can give useful insights into the physical mechanism leading to these earthquakes. Abstract

We present a 2-D subsurface image of the Paganica Fault from a high-resolution refraction tomography and detailed geological investigation carried out across part of the northwestern segment of the 20-km-long Paganica-San Demetrio fault-system, and which was responsible of the 2009 April 6 Mw 6.1 L'Aquila earthquake (central Italy). We acquired two seismic profiles crossing the Paganica basin with a dense-wide aperture configuration. More than 30 000 P wave first-arrival traveltimes were input to a non-linear tomographic inversion. The obtained 250-300 m deep 2-D Vp images illuminate the shallow portion of the Paganica Fault, and depict additional unreported splays defining a complex half-graben structure. We interpret local thickening of low-Vp (<2400 m s-1) and intermediate-Vp (2600-3400 m s-1) regions as syn-tectonic clasticwedges above a high-Vp (3800-5000 ms-1) carbonate basement. These results are condensed in a 4.2-km-long section across the Paganica basin, clearly indicating that the Paganica Fault is a mature normal fault cutting the whole upper ~ 10 km of the crust. We evaluate a minimum cumulative net displacement of 650 ~ 90 m and a total heave of 530 ~ 65 m accomplished by the Paganica Fault, respectively. In the conservative hypothesis that the extension started during the Gelasian (1.80-2.59 Ma),we obtain a minimum long-term slip-rate of 0.30 ~ 0.07 mm yr-1 and an extension-rate of 0.25 ~ 0.06 mm yr-1, respectively. Considering the regional averaged extensional field of ~1 mm yr-1 obtained from geodetic and geological analyses at 104 yr timescale, we infer that the Paganica Fault accounts for ~20 per cent of the NE-extension affecting this zone of the central Apennines axis due to the concurrent activity of other parallel normal fault-systems nearby (e.g. the Liri, Velino-Magnola, L'Aquila-Celano and Gran Sasso fault-systems).
