In leading-edge industrial applications, assessing structure integrity is an important aspect of safety requirements. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) proposes to use sensors and signal processing units in situ. One of the most attractive SHM techniques relies on ultrasonic guided waves. Modeling and simulation can be helpful tools for the design or the reliability assessment of SHM solutions. Currently available models developed for that purpose do not take into account effects of operational conditions such as internal stresses. These conditions can change wave propagation and therefore affect the interpretation of recorded signals. The objective of this work is to propose a model that fills this gap, and to derive corresponding numerical methods for elastic wave propagation in an arbitrarily deformed medium. Any hyperelastic constitutive law can be considered. As the structures considered are usually thin, we avoid shear-locking by using a shell formulation to solve the quasi-static problem representing the effects of structure loading. The computed displacement is then fed into a spectral elements method (SFEM) kernel to solve the time-domain linearized 3D elastodynamics problem representing the wave propagation. We validate our model against experimental data in the literature for an isotropic aluminium plate under tensile forces. Additionally, we apply these numerical procedures to a realistic bending experiment of a steel pipe. These validations steps show that our generic approach is able to capture the effects of stresses on ultrasonic guided wave propagation such as changes in wave velocity and induced anisotropy.

International audience; Dans les applications industrielles de pointe, l'évaluation de l'intégrité des structures est un aspect important des exigences de sécurité. Cependant, l'application des méthodes classiques d'évaluation non destructive peut être coûteuse et entraîne généralement des interruptions d'activité. Pour surmonter ces difficultés, le Structural Health Monitoring(SHM) propose d'utiliser des capteurs et des unités de traitement du signal in situ. Les ondes ultrasonores guidées constituent l'un des moyens de mettre en œuvre les systèmes SHM. Elles peuvent être utilisées pour évaluer les caractéristiques internes du matériau, telles que ses propriétés/défauts. Ces systèmes SHM sont déjà mis en œuvre dans des applications industrielles, mais leur utilisation est limitée en raison des conditions environnementales et opérationnelles. Un exemple typique est celui des charges opérationnelles induisant de grandes déformations et par conséquent des contraintes internes qui entraînent des changements dans la propagation des ondes[1]. Pour interpréter les signaux mesurés dans ce contexte, il est important que les efforts de modélisation de la propagation des ondes prennent en compte ce phénomène. L'objectif de notre travail est de présenter un modèle, et les méthodes numériques correspondantes, pour la propagation élastique des ondes dans un milieu précontraint. Comme les structures considérées sont généralement minces, nous utilisons une formulation de coque[2] pour la mécanique nonlinéaire pour résoudre le problème statique, représentant les effets du chargement de la structure. Le déplacement calculé est ensuite introduit dans un noyau de la méthode des éléments spectraux(SFEM)[3] pour résoudre le problème élastodynamique linéarisé dans le domaine temporel, représentant la propagation des ondes

We derive an efficient numerical scheme for transient wave propagation in configurations where a fluid domain and a solid domain are separated by a thin coating material. These type of configurations are numerically challenging for multiple factors: managing fluid ­ solid coupling, enabling non-conform space discretizations, and rendering robust time discrete algorithm w.r.t the thin layer thickness. By combining the mortar element method with effective transmission conditions we are able to address these challenges. We illustrate our approach by proposing relevant 2D numerical illustrations inspired from simple ultrasonic testing experiments.

Special Issue of e-Journal of Nondestructive Testing (eJNDT) Vol. 27(9) Session: Modeling and Simulation 2; International audience; The simulation of nondestructive evaluation is a useful tool in the design of inspection procedure or the interpretation of results. In the case of the ultrasonic inspection of concrete, modeling the complex interaction of ultrasonic waves with the heterogeneous material is challenging. A finite element code for the simulation of ultrasonic inspections is developed in the CIVA software platform. It is the kernel of a new simulation module dedicated to concrete in a custom version of CIVA. This module relies on automated meshing managed through a user-friendly interface and offers comparatively fast numerical computations. Its aims at modeling practical concrete inspection configurations, involving for example distributions of aggregates, voids and metallic objects. In this communication, we present these modelling efforts and focus on configurations of interests and evaluation of the modelling performances performed in a recent collaboration between CEA and EDF.

We present a model, and corresponding numerical methods, for elastic wave propagation in a predeformed medium. We use a shell formulation [2] for nonlinear mechanics to compute the effects of structure loading. The computed displacement is fed into a spectral elements method [3] (SFEM) kernel to solve the time-domain linearized elastodynamics problem representing the wave propagation.

International audience; In this paper we present an optimization of a spectral finite element method implementation. The improvements consisted in the modification of thememory layout of the main algorithmic kernels and in the augmentation of the arithmetic intensity via loop transformations. The code has been deployed on multi-core SIMD machines and GPU. Compared to our starting point, i.e. the original scalar sequential code, we achieved a speed up of ×228 on CPU.We present comparisons with the SPECFEM2D code that prove the good performances of our implementation on similar cases. On GPU, a hybrid solution is investigated.

This thesis aims at incorporating complex data derived from images into a data assimilation strategy available for mechanical systems. Our work relies on some recent developments that propose a sequential data assimilation method made of a Luenberger filter for the state space and an optimal filter reduced to the remaining parameter space. We aim at performing parameter identification for a biomechanical model of the heart and, within the scope of this application, we formalize the construction of shape discrepancy measurements for two types of data sets: first, the data expected of a processing step of tagged Magnetic Resonance Imaging (tagged-MRI) and, second, more standard data composed by the contours of the object. Initially based on simple distance measurements we enrich these discrepancy measures by incorporating the formalism of currents which enables to embed the contours of the object within the dual of an appropriate space of test functions. For each discrepancy operators we analyze its impact on the observability of the system and, in the case of tagged-MRI, we prove that they are equivalent to a direct measurement of the displacement. From a numerical standpoint, taking into account these complex data sets is a great challenge that motivates the creation of new numerical schemes that provide a more flexible management of the various observation operators. We assess these new means of extracting the rich information contained in the image by identifying in realistic cases the position and the intensity of an infarct in the heart tissue.; Cette thèse est dédiée à l'intégration de données complexes issues de l'imagerie dans une stratégie d'assimilation de données pour des modèles mécaniques.
