The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observed for the first time highly polarized X-ray emission from the magnetar 1E 1841-045, targeted after a burst-active phase in August 2024. To date, IXPE has observed four other magnetars during quiescent periods, highlighting substantially different polarization properties. 1E 1841-045 exhibits a high, energy-dependent polarization degree, which increases monotonically from ~15% at 2-3 keV up to ~55% at 5.5-8 keV, while the polarization angle, aligned with the celestial North, remains fairly constant. The broadband spectrum (2-79 keV) obtained by combining simultaneous IXPE and NuSTAR data is well modeled by a blackbody and two power-law components. The unabsorbed 2-8 keV flux (~2E-11 erg/cm2/s) is about 10% higher than that obtained from archival XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations. The polarization of the soft, thermal component does not exceed ~25%, and may be produced by a condensed surface or a bombarded atmosphere. The intermediate power law is polarized at around 30%, consistent with predictions for resonant Compton scattering in the star magnetosphere; while, the hard power law exhibits a polarization degree exceeding 65%, pointing to a synchrotron/curvature origin., Comment: Submitted to ApJL together with a companion paper by Stewart et al. Turbulence in classical fluids is characterized by persistent structures that emerge from the chaotic landscape. We investigate the analogous process in fully kinetic plasma turbulence by using high-resolution, direct numerical simulations in two spatial dimensions. We observe the formation of long-living vortices with a profile typical of macroscopic, magnetically dominated force-free states. Inspired by the Harris pinch model for inhomogeneous equilibria, we describe these metastable solutions with a self-consistent kinetic model in a cylindrical coordinate system centered on a representative vortex, starting from an explicit form of the particle velocity distribution function. Such new equilibria can be simplified to a Gold-Hoyle solution of the modified force-free state. Turbulence is mediated by the long-living structures, accompanied by transients in which such vortices merge and form self-similarly new metastable equilibria. This process can be relevant to the comprehension of various astrophysical phenomena, going from the formation of plasmoids in the vicinity of massive compact objects to the emergence of coherent structures in the heliosphere., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures (Main Text), 3 figures (Appendices)

This paper explores multi-entry strategies for betting pools related to single-elimination tournaments. In such betting pools, participants select winners of games, and their respective score is a weighted sum of the number of correct selections. Most betting pools have a top-heavy payoff structure, so the paper focuses on strategies that maximize the expected score of the best-performing entry. There is no known closed-formula expression for the estimation of this metric, so the paper investigates the challenges associated with the estimation and the optimization of multi-entry solutions. We present an exact dynamic programming approach for calculating the maximum expected score of any given fixed solution, which is exponential in the number of entries. We explore the structural properties of the problem to develop several solution techniques. In particular, by extracting insights from the solutions produced by one of our algorithms, we design a simple yet effective problem-specific heuristic that was the best-performing technique in our experiments, which were based on real-world data extracted from recent March Madness tournaments. In particular, our results show that the best 100-entry solution identified by our heuristic had a 2.2% likelihood of winning a $1 million prize in a real-world betting pool.

The discovery of pulsations in (at least) six ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) has shown that neutron stars can accrete at (highly) super-Eddington rates, challenging the standard accretion theories. M51 ULX-7, with a spin signal of $P\simeq2.8$ s, is the pulsating ULX (PULX) with the shortest known orbital period ($P_\mathrm{orb}\simeq2$ d) and has been observed multiple times by XMM-Newton, Chandra, and NuSTAR. We report on the timing and spectral analyses of three XMM-Newton observations of M51 ULX-7 performed between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022, together with a timing re-analysis of XMM-Newton, Chandra, and NuSTAR archival observations. We investigated the spin signal by applying accelerated search techniques and studied the power spectrum through the fast Fourier transform, looking for (a)periodic variability in the source flux. We analysed the energy spectra of the 2021-2022 observations and compared them to the older ones. We report the discovery of a recurrent, significant ($>$3$\sigma$) broad complex at mHz frequencies in the power spectra of M51 ULX-7. We did not detect the spin signal, setting a 3$\sigma$ upper limit on the pulsed fraction of $\lesssim10\%$ for the single observation. The complex is significantly detected also in five Chandra observations performed in 2012. M51 ULX-7 represents the second PULX for which we have a significant detection of mHz-QPOs at super-Eddington luminosities. These findings suggest that one should avoid using the observed QPO frequency to infer the mass of the accretor in a ULX. The absence of spin pulsations when the broad complex is detected suggests that the mechanism responsible for the aperiodic modulation also dampens the spin signal's pulsed fraction. If true, this represents an additional obstacle in the detection of new PULXs, suggesting an even larger occurrence of PULXs among ULXs., Comment: 14 pages (12 main text + Appendix), 5 figures. W2 (CXOGlb J002415.8-720436) is a cataclysmic variable (CV) in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Its modulation was discovered within the CATS@BAR project. The source shows all the properties of magnetic CVs, but whether it is a polar or an intermediate polar is still a matter of debate. This paper investigates the spectral and temporal properties of the source, using all archival X-ray data from Chandra and eROSITA Early Data Release, to establish whether the source falls within the category of polars or intermediate polars. We fitted Chandra archival spectra with three different models: a power law, a bremsstrahlung and an optically thin thermal plasma. We also explored the temporal properties of the source with searches for pulsations with a power spectral density analysis and a Rayleigh test ($Z_n^2$). W2 displays a mean luminosity of $\sim 10^{32}$ erg s$^{-1}$ over a 20-year span, despite lower values in a few epochs. The source is not detected in the latest observation, taken with Chandra in 2022, and we infer an X-ray luminosity $\leq 7 \times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The source spectral shape does not change over time and can be equally well fitted with each of the three models, with a best-fit photon index of 1.6 for the power law and best-fit temperatures of 10 keV for both the bremsstrahlung and the thermal plasma models. We confirm the previously detected period of 8649 s, ascribed to the binary orbital period, and found a cycle-to-cycle variability associated with this periodicity. No other significant pulsation is detected. Considering the source orbital period, luminosity, spectral characteristics, long-term evolution and strong cycle-to-cycle variability, we suggest that W2 is a magnetic CV of the polar type., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures. We report on two epochs of simultaneous near-infrared (IR) and X-ray observations with a sub-second time resolution of the low mass X-ray binary black hole candidate Swift J1753.5--0127 during its long 2005--2016 outburst. Data were collected strictly simultaneously with VLT/ISAAC (K$_{S}$ band, 2.2 $\mu m$) and RXTE (2-15 keV) or \textit{XMM-Newton} (0.7-10 keV). A clear correlation between the X-ray and the IR variable emission is found during both epochs but with very different properties. In the first epoch, the near-IR variability leads the X-ray by $ \sim 130 \, ms$. This is the opposite of what is usually observed in similar systems. The correlation is more complex in the second epoch, with both anti-correlation and correlations at negative and positive lags. Frequency-resolved Fourier analysis allows us to identify two main components in the complex structure of the phase lags: the first component, characterised by a few seconds near-IR lag at low frequencies, is consistent with a combination of disc reprocessing and a magnetised hot flow; the second component is identified at high frequencies by a near-IR lag of $\approx$0.7 s. Given the similarities of this second component with the well-known constant optical/near-IR jet lag observed in other black hole transients, we tentatively interpret this feature as a signature of a longer-than-usual jet lag. We report on the multi-year evolution of the population of X-ray sources in the nuclear region of NGC 3621 based on Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift observations. Among these, two sources, X1 and X5, after their first detection in 2008, seem to have faded below the detectability threshold, a most interesting fact as X1 is associated with the AGN of the galaxy. Two other sources, X3 and X6 are presented for the first time, the former showing a peculiar short-term variability in the latest available dataset, suggesting an egress from eclipse, hence belonging to the handful of known eclipsing ultra-luminous X-ray sources. One source, X4, previously known for its "heart-beat", i.e. a characteristic modulation in its signal with a period of $\approx1$ h, shows a steady behaviour in the latest observation. Finally, the brightest X-ray source in NGC 3621, here labelled X2, shows steady levels of flux across all the available datasets but a change in its spectral shape, reminiscent of the behaviours of Galactic disk-fed X-ray binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, 2 appendices available online. X-ray computed microtomography ({\mu}-CT) is a non-destructive technique that can generate high-resolution 3D images of the internal anatomy of medical and biological samples. These images enable clinicians to examine internal anatomy and gain insights into the disease or anatomical morphology. However, extracting relevant information from 3D images requires semantic segmentation of the regions of interest, which is usually done manually and results time-consuming and tedious. In this work, we propose a novel framework that uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically segment the full morphology of the heart of Carassius auratus. The framework employs an optimized 2D CNN architecture that can infer a 3D segmentation of the sample, avoiding the high computational cost of a 3D CNN architecture. We tackle the challenges of handling large and high-resoluted image data (over a thousand pixels in each dimension) and a small training database (only three samples) by proposing a standard protocol for data normalization and processing. Moreover, we investigate how the noise, contrast, and spatial resolution of the sample and the training of the architecture are affected by the reconstruction technique, which depends on the number of input images. Experiments show that our framework significantly reduces the time required to segment new samples, allowing a faster microtomography analysis of the Carassius auratus heart shape. Furthermore, our framework can work with any bio-image (biological and medical) from {\mu}-CT with high-resolution and small dataset size

We report on the orbit of the binary system powering the most extreme ultraluminous X-ray pulsar known to date: NGC 5907 ULX-1 (hereafter ULX1). ULX1 has been the target of a substantial multi-instrument campaign, mainly in the X-ray band, but no clear counterparts are known in other bands. Although ULX1 is highly variable and pulsations can be transient (regardless of the source flux), the timing data collected so far allow us to investigate the orbit of this system. We find an orbital period $P_{orb}=5.7^{+0.1}_{-0.6}\text{ d}$ and a projected semi-axis $A_1 =3.1^{+0.8}_{-0.9}\text{ lts}$. The most likely ephemeris is: $P_{orb}=5.6585(6)\text{ d}$, $A_1 = 3.1(4)\text{ lts}$, and the epoch of ascending nodes passage is: $T_{asc} = 57751.37(5)\text{ MJD}$. However, there are 6 similar solutions, acceptable within $3\,\sigma$. We find further indications that ULX1 is a high-mass X-ray binary. This implies that we are observing its orbit face-on, with an inclination $<5\text{ deg}$., Comment: 11 pages, 2 tables, 6 figures

During a systematic search for new X-ray pulsators in the XMM-Newton archive, we discovered a high amplitude ($PF\simeq86\%$) periodic ($P\simeq7.25\,\mathrm{s}$) modulation in the X-ray flux of 4XMM J045626.3-694723 (J0456 hereafter), a previously unclassified source in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The period of the modulation is strongly suggestive of a spinning neutron star (NS). The source was detected only during one out of six observations in 2018-2022. Based on an absorbed power-law spectral model with photon slope of $\Gamma\simeq 1.9$, we derive a 0.3-10 keV luminosity of $L_\mathrm{X}\simeq2.7\times10^{34}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ for a distance of 50 kpc. The X-ray properties of J0456 are at variance with those of variable LMC X-ray pulsars hosted in high-mass X-ray binary systems with a Be-star companion. Based on SALT spectroscopic observations of the only optical object that matches the X-ray uncertainty region, we cannot completely rule out that J0456 is a NS accreting from a late-type (G8-K3) star, an as-yet-unobserved binary evolutionary outcome in the MCs. We show that the source properties are in better agreement with those of magnetars. J0456 may thus be second known magnetar in the LMC after SGR 0526-66., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. NGC 5907 ULX1 is the most luminous ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar (ULXP) known to date, reaching luminosities in excess of 1e41 erg/s. The pulsar is known for its fast spin-up during the on-state. Here, we present a long-term monitoring of the X-ray flux and the pulse period between 2003-2022. We find that the source was in an off- or low-state between mid-2017 to mid-2020. During this state, our pulse period monitoring shows that the source had spun down considerably. We interpret this spin-down as likely being due to the propeller effect, whereby accretion onto the neutron star surface is inhibited. Using state-of-the-art accretion and torque models, we use the spin-up and spin-down episodes to constrain the magnetic field. For the spin-up episode, we find solutions for magnetic field strengths of either around 1e12G or 1e13G, however, the strong spin-down during the off-state seems only to be consistent with a very high magnetic field, namely, >1e13G. This is the first time a strong spin-down is seen during a low flux state in a ULXP. Based on the assumption that the source entered the propeller regime, this gives us the best estimate so far for the magnetic field of NGC 5907 ULX1., Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in A&A

We study stochastic optimization problems with objective function given by the expectation of the maximum of two linear functions defined on the component random variables of a multivariate Gaussian distribution. We consider random variables that are arbitrarily correlated, and we show that the problem is NP-hard even if the space of feasible solutions is unconstrained. We exploit a closed-form expression for the objective function from the literature to construct a cutting-plane algorithm that can be seen as an extension of the integer L-shaped method for a highly nonlinear function, which includes the evaluation of the c.d.f and p.d.f of a standard normal random variable with decision variables as part of the arguments. To exhibit the model's applicability, we consider two featured applications. The first is daily fantasy sports, where the algorithm identifies entries with positive returns during the 2018-2019 National Football League season. The second is a special case of makespan minimization for two parallel machines and jobs with uncertain processing times; for the special case where the jobs are uncorrelated, we prove the equivalence between its deterministic and stochastic versions and show that our algorithm can deliver a constant-factor approximation guarantee for the problem. The results of our computational evaluation involving synthetic and real-world data suggest that our discretization and upper bounding techniques lead to significant computational improvements and that the proposed algorithm outperforms sub-optimal solutions approaches., Comment: 29 pages, 4 tables, 1 figure

We study the three-body problem from different perspectives, going from classical Newtonian physics to general relativity. In the classical case, we modeled the interactions in a typical chaotic configuration, identifying strong interaction times (SITs), namely transients in which the system manifests complex, highly energetic dynamics. By selecting one of such SITs as an initial condition for the general relativistic case, we perform simulations of numerical relativity, showing net differences with the Newtonian case. In the relativistic case, comparing also with the more "quiet" two-body inspiral, we observed strong nonlinear emission of gravitational waves. The spectrum of the three-body signals during a SIT might be a guidance for future gravitational waves observations.

Cultural diversity and cultural plurality are considered today to be the backbone and passion of many multicultural education programs in the United States. Idiosyncratic and parochial needs of specific racial, ethnic, and other self-interest groups are studied as distinctive entities. In some cases, they are treated uniquely in what has been characterized as cross-cultural education. Mainstream multicultural programs are not viewed within the context of social and human experiences whose outcomes enrich and advance the totality of existing values in a cultural plurality. Mono-cultural, bi-cultural, and cross-cultural programs each represent one perspective on a multicultural continuum. In contrast, a humanistic cultural learning experience embraces a commitment to the universality of human condition and the universality of human needs and beliefs that transcend color, race, gender, age, and ideological boundaries. An interdisciplinary approach among liberal arts, the humanities, natural sciences, life and social sciences should confer to students a basic knowledge in all of these areas within the context of a multicultural education. It should promote understanding of and respect for human experiences within particular eco-systems and divergent cultures in time and space; develop objectivity and critical judgment as well as the need for continuing studies and observation. Finally, multicultural education should develop a commitment to the preservation of human rights for all, irrespective of ideological boundaries, creed, race, age, or gender. Contains 18 references. A fundamental goal of multicultural social work education and practice should be to integrate humanism and a syncretic approach to learning that addresses value conflicts resulting from cultural diversity.
