THEATER audiences , *SCHEMAS (Psychology) , *EXPERIENCE - Abstract
Place can shape and influence audience behavior during a performance. This is especially noticeable in the site-specific immersive theatre model, where the performance occurs in a non-theatre setting and audiences have an active role. In this article, we argue that 'place schema' – a term from the interdisciplinary field of environment-behavior studies – provides a conceptual framework for better understanding audience behavior within immersive theatre environments. We know how to behave in a theatre building because we have codified experiences regarding the environment in our minds called place schemata. They help us process spatial information, predict what is likely to happen, and decide how to take action accordingly. However, if this spatial information does not match the 'theatre schema' we have in our minds, as is often the case in an immersive theatre setting, we would need to update our existing schema. In this article, we examine Punchdrunk's Sleep No More (2011 New York production, which is still running) to evaluate how audiences carry the behavioral rules of traditional theatre schema into immersive theatres and consider how expectations, roles, and rules of place influence the relationship between the audience and setting. The aims of the present experiments were to investigate the impact of (a) ordinal position, (b) object salience (size and three-dimensionality), and (c) proximity to salient objects on visitor attention in digital exhibitions, and to make comparisons with trends observed in physical exhibitions. The results of two experiments involving 210 participants, conducted using a tablet computer, indicated that (a) the ordinal position and salience effects observed in physical exhibitions were also present in the digital medium; (b) however, the overshadowing effect by the salient objects on the adjacent ones observed in physical exhibitions did not seem to emerge when three-dimensionality was the salience parameter; and (c) the negative impact of the salient object's presence on the overall attention to the exhibition observed in physical exhibitions seemed to be eliminated in digital exhibition environments regardless of the salience parameter. Buildings are an integral part of our physical environment and have aesthetic significance with respect to the organizational integrity of architectural elements. While Gestalt principles are essential in design education, their relationship with architectural features remains understudied. The present study explored how Gestalt principles and complexity levels influence evaluations of building façades through the use of questionnaires and eye tracking. Twenty-four two-dimensional black and white façade drawings, manipulated using selected Gestalt principles (similarity and proximity) to achieve different levels of complexity (low, medium & high), were presented to 79 participants. The results suggested a negative linear relationship between aesthetic ratings and complexity levels across selected Gestalt principles. In addition, as expected, participants had the highest number of fixations, shortest fixation durations, and lowest aesthetic ratings for higher levels of complexity. Results involving Gestalt principles revealed that proximity-based designs received higher aesthetic ratings, demanded less time, elicited lower number of fixations, and resulted in shorter fixation durations. Conversely, similarity-based designs received lower aesthetic ratings, demanded more time, elicited higher number of fixations, and resulted in longer fixation durations. These findings offer insights into architectural aesthetic experiences and inform future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EXHIBITIONS , *ATTENTION , *SIZE , *TRACKING control systems - Abstract
The main aim of the present study was to explore the impact of three stimulus-related variables—that is, ordinal position of viewing, relative size of exhibit objects, and proximity to larger sized objects—on visitor attention and interest in exhibitions. A field experiment that utilized timing and tracking through unobtrusive observation, as well as a questionnaire, was conducted with 120 participants in one control and three experimental conditions. The results suggest that (a) visitor attention declines across ordinal position, being interrupted in the experimental conditions by the presence of a larger object; (b) larger exhibit objects attract and hold more attention than smaller ones, especially those adjacent to (and appear before rather than after) the larger object; and (c) while larger objects attract more attention on an individual comparison, they seem to have a suppressing effect on the overall level of attention to the exhibition compared with the control condition. Cataloged from PDF version of article. Thesis (Ph.D.): Bilkent University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, 2022. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 131-152). With the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of quick response (QR) codes has increased rapidly in many areas. However, the adoption of QR code-based indoor wayfinding models is still limited. The reliance on location-aware technologies, the development of smartphone applications, and the need for programming language knowledge could be counted among the reasons for the limited use of these models. In the present study, we proposed a lightweight QR code-based indoor wayfinding model that is low-cost, easy-to-adapt, free of sensors, and solely functions with smartphones. Accordingly, we conducted two experimental studies to test the model under two conditions: first, in a complex university campus building with 38 participants; then in the virtual model of that building with 72 participants. In both environments, we compared the use of You-Are-Here maps displayed on smartphones by scanning the QR codes on the walls (the QR condition) to the use of the same maps located on the walls (the No-QR condition). We measured task performances, perceived ease of task, comfort level, and evaluations of the proposed model. To reveal the relationships between the variables and differences between conditions, we conducted the Pearson correlation coefficient test and repeated measure ANOVA. Our findings revealed that even though the participants completed the wayfinding tasks in the QR condition in a longer time than in the No-QR condition, the positive responses of the participants revealed that they would be willing to use QR codes in complex indoor environments. Findings and evaluations suggested that the proposed model, in its current form, may function as expected and be a useful, lightweight, and low-cost alternative to You-Are-Here maps. by Çetin Tünger Ph.D.

Cataloged from PDF version of article. Thesis (Master's): Bilkent University, Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, 2022. Includes bibliographical references (leaves 73-84). This study aims to explore the ways of creating boundaries of academics working from home and investigate the differences between the practices of creating these boundaries. Although working from home is not a new practice, Covid-19 pandemic shifted the working patterns of most people, especially the education-related branches such as academics. This exploratory study investigates how people set up their work environments and the boundaries in response to the change in the working practice. The study consists of an exploratory interview that contains classified questions on spatial, temporal, and psychological boundaries people create in their working environments. Interviews were held face-to-face and online via Zoom with 20 participants. The thematic analysis method was used to analyze the collected data. The findings suggest that the ways of creating boundaries differ between individuals, and these changes are affected by factors such as marital status, population at home, and spatial limitations. The results give a general idea and offer an insight into the optimal separation or connection of working spaces in the home. by Sare Kılıç M.F.A.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the association of neighborhood location with place attachment and residential satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach First, the authors reviewed the literature on place attachment and residential satisfaction, and then generated a questionnaire based on the scales from the literature. The authors surveyed 135 respondents in two neighborhoods of Ankara, a metropolitan city in Turkey: one in the city center, the other in a suburb. To analyze the data, first, factor analysis, and later, multivariate analysis of variance and correlation tests were conducted. Findings The results indicated that place attachment and residential satisfaction were positively correlated, in congruence with the related literature; however, neighborhood location appeared to be associated only with residential satisfaction. The theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed with respect to the recent issues on housing. Originality/value The effects of neighborhood location on place attachment and residential satisfaction (by comparing two different residential areas of the city) have not been adequately examined in earlier studies. The study results provide an understanding of the effectiveness of residential location on improving place attachment and residential satisfaction and contribute to the existing literature. Although the study findings may not be generalized to other locations in Turkey, this study contributed to the previous studies on place attachment and residential satisfaction by providing data from Turkish residents, which is less often examined.

The present study focused on to explore the relationship between place attachment and territoriality of students towards their design studios. For this purpose, we examined place attachment and territoriality in design studios by comparing design studios with open doors, which belongs to Interior Architecture and Environmental Design (IAED) Department; and key-card entry, which belong to Architecture (ARCH) department. Additionally, students' evaluation of their own design studios was also considered in the study. The questionnaire of the study included items of place attachment, which were adapted from Workplace Attachment Scale of Rioux (2006); territoriality, adapted from Brown (2009) and general evaluation items towards interiors, adapted from Imamoglu (1981). This questionnaire was administered to 2nd and 3rd year students from two departments at I.D. Bilkent University. One hundred and fifty students (110 women, 40 men) responded to the questionnaire in their own design studios. The results indicate that place attachment had positive relationships with both territoriality and general evaluation of the studios. It is also found that there is a positive relationship between place attachment and general evaluation. However, no certain relationship emerged between territoriality and general evaluation. 117

The main aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between complexity, preference and restorative potential of interiors. Eighteen black and white images of third places such as cafes, restaurants, and lounges were rated by 100 non-designer university students from three universities. They rated the images on preference, complexity, familiarity, perceived restoration potential and restoration components (being away, fascination, extent, compatibility). A single-item version of Perceived Restorativeness Scale was adapted to measure the restorative potential of interior spaces. Pearson's Correlation, repeated measures ANOVAs and a mediation analysis were conducted. The results showed that preference a was positively correlated with both complexity and components of restoration. Complexity was positively correlated to fascination, extent, and compatibility. Fascination, Extent, and Compatibility mediated the effect of complexity on preference. 124

This study explores the relationship between aesthetic preferences related to visual complexity and personal traits. For this purpose, we used nine images with geometric shapes and nine photographs of building façades, each of which was manipulated to represent three complexity levels. According to `The Big-Five Model`, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability (Neuroticism), and Intellect are the five main personal traits. Effect of these personal traits on aesthetic preferences about visual complexity was examined by conducting an online research with 207 respondents (144 women and 63 men). Results show that the relationship between aesthetic preference for complexity on geometric shapes and age is positive which means older respondents prefer more complex stimuli than younger ones. Results also revealed that interrelationship between rated complexity of geometric shapes and agreeableness is positive which means when a person has the higher score in agreeableness he/she also rates geometric shapes as more complex. The interrelationship of rated complexity of geometric shapes and conscientiousness also is positive. A similar tendency exists on the complexity ratings of building façades for the respondents who have higher scores of extraversion. People who have higher scores on extraversion rated building façades as more complex. As a result of this study conducted with geometric shapes and building façades, personal traits, complexity and familiarity are affected the aesthetic preference of respondents. 157

Anahtar Kelimeler: Mahalle, Memnuniyet, Muhit, Yer Bağlılığı, Yerleşim Kalitesi Affective bonds of individuals to their environment have been investigated and certain terms were studied such as place attachment and residential satisfaction arousing interest especially in environmental psychology. The current study aims to investigate the effects of neighborhood location on place attachment and residential satisfaction. We examined place attachment by conducting a survey comparing two neighborhoods; Ayrancı in the city center, the other Çayyolu, far away from the city center. We also investigated residential satisfaction in these neighborhoods by examining their physical and social features as a measure of residential quality. Anahtar Kelimeler: Kalabalıklık, Mahremiyet, Tatmin, Yoğunluk, Yurt Many students move to different cities for their university education. This brings formidable experiences to those who are separated from their family. Living in a dormitory teaches them to live, interact and coordinate with other students in common spaces. This study focuses on the relationship of satisfaction with crowding and privacy. A questionnaire that inquired about the satisfaction of students with respect to their dormitories was conducted with 200 undergraduate students who lived in Bilkent University Dormitories. Factor analysis, correlation, t-tests, chi-square tests, and anova were used to test the hypotheses. In line with the literature, the results suggest that general satisfaction level, dormitory satisfaction level, dormitory room satisfaction level and satisfaction of school level show positive and strong correlations with each other. Men seem to have a higher general satisfaction level but less privacy compared to women in smilar conditions. Individuals who live with more people per meter square in a dormitory room feel more crowding than the others. Amongst different genders that lived in the same room, women perceived and qualified their room as smaller compared to men's perception. Lastly, individuals who qualify their dormitory room as small seemed to feel more crowding compared to others. Keywords: Crowding, Density, Dormitory, Privacy, Satisfaction 116

Renk sıcaklığındaki farklılıklar prestijlilik dikkate alındığında önceki çalışmalarla çelişkili sonuçlar vermiştirAnahtar Kelimeler: mağaza imajı, prestijlilik, renk değeri, renk sıcaklığı, yüzey elemanları, mağaza ortamı, renk algısı This study examined the changes in value and warmth of color on store surface elements considering store image. To evaluate the store image, four different existing retail stores were chosen which had surfaces in red, green, yellow and blue colors which also referred four primary colors (red, green, yellow and blue) of Natural Color System (NCS) and these retail stores were manipulated through a 3D modeling program. Manipulated samples represented 20 per cent increased and decreased values as well as opposite colors of these four color hues. A questionnaire was used to understand whether changes in color made any difference on perception of the store image. The questionnaire consisted of 13 adjective pairs and a six-point semantic differential scale to evaluate manipulations in retail store samples in terms of prestigiousness and liking. Eighty Bilkent University students participated from different departments except design departments. According to results, value manipulations seemed to influence perception of store image. Differences in warmth of color had conflicting results with previous studies when prestigiousness was taken into consideration.Key Words: store image, prestigiousness, color value, color warmth, surface elements, store environment, color perception 90

Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2009. Includes bibliographical references leaves 65-73. The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between assessments of residential movie interiors, personal attributes of assumed residents and respondent characteristics. The study was conducted with 113 students from the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design of Bilkent University. Nine residential movie clips were presented to the participants and they were asked to fill out a questionnaire sheet which consisted of three parts: Items involving space qualities, personal attributes of assumed residents, and relatedness and happiness of the respondents. Residential spaces rated as unfamiliar were rated as more exciting and were preferred over those rated as familiar. Furthermore, respondents having related self-construals reported more happiness and they perceived assumed residents as being happier and more trustworthy. No significant relationship was found between the complexity ratings of the movie clips and the evaluations of the residential spaces portrayed. This might have been because other variables besides complexity could not be controlled due to the nature of the stimuli. Tanrıverdi, Yaprak M.F.A.

Walking into an unfamiliar building, we quickly know, for example, not only that it is a restaurant, but also what kind of a restaurant it is, what kind of people we are likely to find there and how they are likely to and ‘supposed’ to act (1). We are able to differentiate between customers and employees, have an idea about the location of the restrooms, the kind of food served and even the cost of eating there without talking to anyone and in seconds! Often we can answer many of these questions even before entering the building (Cherulnik, 1991). Although we practice this “guessing game” all the time, because it comes to us so naturally, we do not even notice what we are achieving. We are able to achieve this by virtue of our mental representations called schemas.

This paper (1) claims that in spite of the unique opportunities introduced to design learning by the emergence of virtual models, the benefits of learning through building in real-scale cannot be totally disregarded. Within this framework, a real-scale project through which students could study light, color and texture was proposed in a senior interior design studio course. Students were asked to work in groups and create a set design, using different objects, materials, colors and lighting configurations within a mock-up space. This paper presents an assessment of the students' responses to the project, discussing the impacts of the project in terms of three main aspects: learning by doing and seeing, learning in different styles, and learning in a group environment. The study suggests that despite its functional difficulties both in terms of provision of space and budget, the integration of even simple real-scale projects to the design studio may be a viable option in design education, enhancing students' comprehension of the transformation between the design and its application.
