Abstract

Magnetic two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have attracted a lot of attention because modern preparation techniques are capable of providing single crystal films of these materials with precise control of thickness down to the single-layer limit. It opens up a way to study rich variety of electronic and magnetic phenomena with promising routes towards potential applications. We have investigated the initial stages of epitaxial growth of the magnetic van der Waals semiconductor FeBr\textsubscript{2} on a single-crystal Au(111) substrate by means of low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, low-energy electron emission microscopy and x-ray photoemission electron microscopy. Magnetic properties of the one- and two-layer thick films were measured via x-ray absorption spectroscopy/x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Our findings show a striking difference in the magnetic behaviour of the single layer of FeBr\textsubscript{2} and its bulk counterpart, which can be attributed to the modifications in the crystal structure due to the interaction with the substrate., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

If neutrinos are their own antiparticles the otherwise-forbidden nuclear reaction known as neutrinoless double beta decay can occur. The very long lifetime expected for these exceptional events makes its detection a daunting task. In order to conduct an almost background-free experiment, the NEXT collaboration is investigating novel synthetic molecular sensors that may capture the Ba dication produced in the decay of certain Xe isotopes in a high-pressure gas experiment. The use of such molecular detectors immobilized on surfaces must be explored in the ultra-dry environment of a xenon gas chamber. Here, using a combination of highly sensitive surface science techniques in ultra-high vacuum, we demonstrate the possibility of employing the so-called Fluorescent Bicolor Indicator as the molecular component of the sensor. We unravel the ion capture process for these molecular indicators immobilized on a surface and explain the origin of the emission fluorescence shift associated to the ion trapping.

Abstract

If neutrinos are their own antiparticles, the otherwise-forbidden nuclear reaction known as neutrinoless double beta decay ($\beta\beta 0\nu$) can occur, with a characteristic lifetime which is expected to be very long, making the suppression of backgrounds a daunting task. It has been shown that detecting (``tagging'') the Ba$^{+2}$ dication produced in the double beta decay ${}^{136}\mathrm{Xe} \rightarrow {}^{136}$Ba$^{+2}+ 2 e + (2 \nu)$ in a high pressure gas experiment, could lead to a virtually background free experiment. To identify these \Bapp, chemical sensors are being explored as a key tool by the NEXT collaboration . Although used in many fields, the application of such chemosensors to the field of particle physics is totally novel and requires experimental demonstration of their suitability in the ultra-dry environment of a xenon gas chamber. Here we use a combination of complementary surface science techniques to unambiguously show that Ba$^{+2}$ ions can be trapped (chelated) in vacuum by an organic molecule, the so-called fluorescent bicolour indicator (FBI) (one of the chemosensors developed by NEXT), immobilized on a surface. We unravel the ion capture mechanism once the molecules are immobilised on Au(111) surface and explain the origin of the emission fluorescence shift associated to the trapping of different ions. Moreover, we prove that chelation also takes place on a technologically relevant substrate, as such, demonstrating the feasibility of using FBI indicators as building blocks of a Ba$^{+2}$ detector.

Abstract

Diodes are key elements for electronics, optics, and detection. The search for a material combination providing the best performances for the required application is continuously ongoing. Here, we present a superconducting spintronic tunnel diode based on the strong spin filtering and splitting generated by an EuS thin film between a superconducting Al and a normal metal Cu layer. The Cu/EuS/Al tunnel junction achieves a large rectification (up to $\sim40$\%) already for a small voltage bias ($\sim 200$ $\mu$V) thanks to the small energy scale of the system: the Al superconducting gap. With the help of an analytical theoretical model we can link the maximum rectification to the spin polarization of the barrier and describe the quasi-ideal Schottky-diode behavior of the junction. This cryogenic spintronic rectifier is promising for the application in highly-sensitive radiation detection for which two different configurations are evaluated. In addition, the superconducting diode may pave the way for future low-dissipation and fast superconducting electronics., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

How magnetism emerges in low-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides at the monolayer limit is still an open question. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of single crystal and monolayer VSe$_{2}$, both experimentally and \emph{ab initio}. Magnetometry, X-ray magnetic circular dichrosim (XMCD) and \emph{ab initio} calculations demonstrate that the charge density wave in bulk stoichiometric VSe$_{2.0}$ causes a structural distortion with a strong reduction in the density of sates at the Fermi level, prompting the system towards a non-magnetic state but on the verge of a ferromagnetic instability. In the monolayer limit, the structural rearrangement induces a Peierls distortion with the opening of an energy gap at the Fermi level and the absence of magnetic order. Control experiments on defect-induced VSe$_{2-\delta}$ single crystals show a breakdown of magnetism, discarding vacancies as a possible origin of magnetic order in VSe$_{2}$., Comment: polished version, updated acknowledgments

Abstract

The hospitality industry faced extraordinary challenges as opposed to the pandemic that causes the decrease of occupancy rate until 4% for economy hotels and 15% for luxury hotels. This condition affects to joblessness of the hotel workers. The study focuses on the psychosocial impact of joblessness due to the covid-19 pandemic on the hotel workers. A qualitative research design was used in this study. Data gathered was from the point of view of the hotel workers of the industries done through interviews online. The implication of the study reveals the challenges brought by this pandemic are mostly loss of revenues leading to employee layoffs. The study reveals that despite the pandemic faced by the industries, the resiliency of Filipinos was evidently seen. Furthermore, the hospitality industry distinguished the impact of Covid-19 on the well-being of hotel workers. Thus, results from this study can be used by companies to develop a more efficient coping mechanism for unforeseen situations like pandemics and any other circumstances unpredicted by humankind.

Abstract

One-atom-thick rare-earth/noble metal (RE-NM) compounds are attractive materials to investigate two-dimensional magnetism, since they are easy to synthesize into a common RE-NM2 structure with high crystal perfection. Here we perform a comparative study of the GdAu2, HoAu2, and YbAu2 monolayer compounds grown on Au(111). We find the same atomic lattice quality and moire superlattice periodicity in the three cases, but different electronic properties and magnetism. The YbAu2 monolayer reveals the characteristic electronic signatures of a mixed-valence configuration in the Yb atom. In contrast, GdAu2 and HoAu2 show the trivalent character of the rare-earth and ferromagnetic transitions below 22 K. Yet, the GdAu2 monolayer has an in-plane magnetic easy-axis, versus the out-of-plane one in HoAu2. The electronic bands of the two trivalent compounds are very similar, while the divalent YbAu2 monolayer exhibits different band features. In the latter, a strong 4f-5d hybridization is manifested in neatly resolved avoided crossings near the Fermi level. First principles theory points to a residual presence of empty 4f states, explaining the fluctuating valence of Yb in the YbAu2 monolayer.

Abstract

We report for the first time on a pulsed vapor phase copper-free azide-alkyne click reaction on ZnO by using the atomic layer deposition (ALD) process technology. This reproducible and fast method is based on an in situ two-step reaction consisting of sequential exposures of ZnO to propiolic acid and benzyl azide.

Abstract

We have studied magnetic and structural properties of the composite microwires consisted of the metallic core and the outer glass shell. Nominal chemical composition of the core was Ni49.5Mn25.4Ga25.1, its diameter was 13.2 μm, and the total diameter of the glass-covered microwires was 26.4 μm. We have found out that at room temperature the core of the as-cast microwires was composed by two phases with tetragonal I4/mmm and cubic Fm3m crystal structures, but annealing rendered it single phase. Measurements of the magnetic properties have demonstrated substantial growth of the magnetic anisotropy with cooling, which we have attributed to the phase transition from the room-temperature austenitic to the low-temperature martensitic state. Magnetic easy axis was found to be perpendicular to the axis of the microwires at low temperatures. We believe that it is a result of the crystallographic texture induced in the martensite by high internal stress characteristic of the glass-covered magnetic microwires. Though rearrangement of the martensitic microstructure under external pressure was previously observed in the single crystal Ni2MnGa samples, in composite materials this effect is new and can be potentially useful for the applications. Abstract

Single-crystalline sample of Nd2Co7 (TC 613 K) has been used to study 'anisotropic' magnetocaloric effect (MCE), originated from field induced rotation of the magnetic moment from easy- to hard-magnetization direction. Anisotropy constants were estimated using measured magnetization isotherms within 200-320 K temperature range, which encompasses two spontaneous spin-reorientation phase transitions. These data allow us to calculate the magnetic entropy and 'anisotropic' MCE using simple thermodynamic model. Thus obtained MCE was successfully compared with MCE calculated by means of the Maxwell relation. Main differences between 'anisotropic' MCE and MCE concerned with magnetizing of ferromagnetic substances near their Curie temperatures have been revealed. In spite of rather low characteristic values (ΔS = -0.005 MJ/Km3, ΔT = 0.4 K at 235 K and ΔS = 0.005 MJ/Km3, ΔT =- 0.44 K at 250 K on the field change of 1 T) observed in Nd2Co7, intrinsic properties of the 'anisotropic' MCE were found to be rather good: it may be a flat function of temperature, rotation of the moment can be completed in the moderate fields, neither temperature nor field hysteresises has been observed. Furthermore, the peak values of the 'anisotropic' MCE are not limited by equation restricting MCE in the common ferromagnetic materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report on tailoring the hysteresis loops of arrays containing Fe- and Co-rich microwires utilizing effects of magnetostatic coupling. The interacting wires of both types may produce a complex magnetic response and highly specific spectral characteristics. For Fe-rich microwires we observed step-wise hysteresis loops with a number of Barkhausen jumps equal to a number of Fe-rich microwires. For arrays of Co-based microwires the change in the hysteresis loop shape is less pronounced and is characterized by an increase in the magnetic anisotropy due to interwire interactions. The most interesting multistage magnetization behavior is obtained for arrays containing both types of wires and is characterized by field intervals with both gradual and abrupt magnetization changes. We also investigated the spectral properties associated with each type of magnetization process. Abstract

How magnetism emerges in low-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides at the monolayer limit is still an open question. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of single-crystal and monolayer VSe2, both experimentally and ab initio. Magnetometry, X-ray magnetic circular dichrosim (XMCD), and ab initiocalculations demonstrate that the charge density wave in bulk stoichiometric VSe2.0causes a structural distortion with a strong reduction in the density of states at the Fermi level, prompting the system toward a nonmagnetic state but on the verge of a ferromagnetic instability. In the monolayer limit, the structural rearrangement induces a Peierls distortion with the opening of an energy gap at the Fermi level and the absence of magnetic order. Control experiments on defect-induced VSe2−δsingle crystals show a breakdown of magnetism, discarding vacancies as a possible origin of magnetic order in VSe2.

Abstract

We have investigated the electronic structures of axially oxo functionalized titanylphthalocyanine (TiOPc) on Ag(111) by X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies, two-photon photoemission, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. Furthermore, we use complementary data of TiOPc on graphite and planar copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) on Ag(111) for a comparative analysis. Both molecules adsorb on Ag(111) in a parallel orientation to the surface, for TiOPc with an oxygen-up configuration. The interaction of nitrogen and carbon atoms with the substrate is similar for both molecules, while the bonding of the titanium atom to Ag(111) in the monolayer is found to be slightly more pronounced than in the CuPc case. Ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy reveals an occupation of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level in monolayer thick TiOPc on Ag(111) related to the interaction of the molecules and the silver substrate. This molecule–metal interaction also causes an upward shift of the Ag(111) Shockley state that is transformed into an unoccupied interface state with energies of 0.23 and 0.33 eV for the TiOPc monolayer and bilayer, respectively, at the Brillouin zone center.
