Abstract

We present a scheme for modeling HF radio signal characteristics along paths of different lengths, which is based on the waveguide approach — the normal mode method. We use a representation of the recorded signal field in the form of Green function products of the angular operator, excitation coefficients, and reception coefficients of individual normal modes. Algorithms have been developed for calculating distance-frequency, frequency-angular, and amplitude characteristics of signals in large spatial regions through analysis and numerical summation of normal mode series. We have implemented a complex algorithm for simulating propagation conditions of HF radio signals, which includes a medium model, algorithms for calculating signal characteristics, and operational diagnostics of radio channel. We have compared the results of the HF signal propagation characteristic modeling and the experimental oblique sounding data obtained along paths of different lengths and orientation. To analyze experimental ionograms, determine the maximum usable frequencies for propagation modes along radio paths, we employ the method of automatic processing and interpretation of oblique sounding ionograms.

Abstract

We present a modified method of HF radio channel modeling based on a waveguide approach. The waveguide approach represents the electromagnetic field of radiation inside the Earth—ionosphere waveguide as an eigenfunction series of a radial boundary problem with impedance conditions on the Earth surface and radiation conditions at infinity. The transfer function of the radio channel is represented as a series of products of angular-operator Green functions, excitation coefficients, and coefficients for receiving individual normal modes. We have obtained a solution of the boundary value problem of determining the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the radial operator. The solution can be applied to the frequency range below the ionospheric F-layer critical frequency. We examine algorithms for calculating distance-frequency, frequency-angular, and amplitude characteristics of signals by analyzing and numerically summarizing the series in terms of strongly damped normal modes.

Abstract

The oxide heterostructure [(YFeO$_3$)$_5$(LaFeO$_3$)$_5$]$_{40}$, which is magnetically ordered and piezoelectric at room temperature, has been constructed from two weak ferromagnetic AFeO$_3$ perovskites with different A cations using RHEED-monitored pulsed laser deposition. The polarisation arises through the removal of inversion centres present within the individual AFeO$_3$ components. This symmetry reduction is a result of combining ordering on the A site, imposed by the periodicity of the grown structure, with appropriate orientations of the octahedral tilting characteristic of the perovskite units themselves, according to simple symmetry-controlled rules. The polarisation is robust against A site interdiffusion between the two layers which produces a sinusoidally modulated occupancy that retains the coupling of translational and point symmetries required to produce a polar structure. Magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr rotation measurements show that the heterostructure's magnetic structure is similar to that of the individual components. Evidence of the polarity was obtained from second harmonic generation and piezoelectric force microscopy measurements. Modeling of the piezoresponse allows extraction of $d_{33}$ (approximately 10 pC/N) of the heterostructure, which is in agreement with DFT calculations., Comment: Main article 13 page, 12 figures Supplementary Informations 21 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

Long-term recurrent stress is a common cause of neuropsychiatric disorders. Animal models are widely used to study the pathogenesis of stress-related psychiatric disorders. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is emerging as a powerful tool to study chronic stress and its mechanisms. Here, we developed a prolonged 11-week chronic unpredictable stress (PCUS) model in zebrafish to more fully mimic chronic stress in human populations. We also examined behavioral and neurochemical alterations in zebrafish, and attempted to modulate these states by 3-week treatment with an antidepressant fluoxetine, a neuroprotective omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a pro-inflammatory endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and their combinations. Overall, PCUS induced severe anxiety and elevated norepinephrine levels, whereas fluoxetine (alone or combined with other agents) corrected most of these behavioral deficits. While EPA and LPS alone had little effects on the zebrafish PCUS-induced anxiety behavior, both fluoxetine (alone or in combination) and EPA restored norepinephrine levels, whereas LPS + EPA increased dopamine levels. As these data support the validity of PCUS as an effective tool to study stress-related pathologies in zebrafish, further research is needed into the ability of various conventional and novel treatments to modulate behavioral and neurochemical biomarkers of chronic stress in this model organism. © 2021, The Author(s).

Abstract

Stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders are widespread, debilitating and often treatment-resistant illnesses that represent an urgent unmet biomedical problem. Animal models of these disorders are widely used to study stress pathogenesis. A more recent and historically less utilized model organism, the zebrafish (Danio rerio), is a valuable tool in stress neuroscience research. Utilizing the 5-week chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) model, here we examined brain transcriptomic profiles and complex dynamic behavioral stress responses, as well as neurochemical alterations in adult zebrafish and their correction by chronic antidepressant, fluoxetine, treatment. Overall, CUS induced complex neurochemical and behavioral alterations in zebrafish, including stable anxiety-like behaviors and serotonin metabolism deficits. Chronic fluoxetine (0.1 mg/L for 11 days) rescued most of the observed behavioral and neurochemical responses. Finally, whole-genome brain transcriptomic analyses revealed altered expression of various CNS genes (partially rescued by chronic fluoxetine), including inflammation-, ubiquitin- and arrestin-related genes. Collectively, this supports zebrafish as a valuable translational tool to study stress-related pathogenesis, whose anxiety and serotonergic deficits parallel rodent and clinical studies, and genomic analyses implicate neuroinflammation, structural neuronal remodeling and arrestin/ubiquitin pathways in both stress pathogenesis and its potential therapy. © 2020, The Author(s).

Abstract

Dynamics of the magneto-optical Kerr effect in a multilayer TbCo2 / FeCo metal structure consisting of alternating layers 1.5 nm thick was studied in this work. The relaxation process was considered over a time interval of up to 170 ps using the femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The experiment was carried out in 2 geometries, when the external field was along the "easy" axis and along the "heavy" axis. The maximum value of the applied magnetic field along the «easy axis» was 4.5 kOe, and along the «heavy» axis 5 kOe. Based on the approximation of the dynamics of the Kerr effect, the dependences of the oscillation frequency, amplitude and decay time are obtained. It is shown that in the geometry of the "heavy axis", in contrast to the geometry of the "easy axis", the amplitude of the oscillations is several times larger, and the decay of the precession is several times slower. The dependence of the amplitude of oscillations in the "heavy axis" geometry has a maximum at an external field of about 2 kOe, the value of which is close to the saturation field along this axis. Abstract

A spatially distributed chirp ionosonde records signals scattered by the Earth's surface at long distances from the emitter, even with relatively low transmitter powers. Experimental studies of the ionosphere backscatter sounding (BS) based on the multifunctional chirp ionosonde developed at the Institute of Solar–Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISTP SB RAS) have revealed the potential of such systems for diagnosing the propagation medium. With a transmitter power of a few kilowatts, it is possible to obtain high-quality BS ionograms within the maximum single-hop range (3000–4000 km). For the analysis of experimental data, algorithms for calculating the characteristics of BS signals, including the amplitude sweep of the recorded signal, are developed. Methods for diagnosing the decameter radio channel using BS data, which are based on the extraction of the leading edge of the BS signal during the processing and interpretation of ionograms, are elaborated. The results of extraction of the signal leading edge on the ionogram are used to calculate the maximum usable frequencies and characteristics of the oblique propagation trajectories for given radio paths in the sounding sector. Abstract

International audience; ABSTRACTThe need to study ultrafast processes in magnetism is due to the prospects for creating ultrafast magnetic recording and ultrafast spintronic devices. In order to excite the magnetic subsystem femtosecond optical pulses are used. The excitement is manifested as in spin precession. In metals, the material is heated first due to significant optical absorption, and significant Joule losses occur.The most important task is to search for materials in which spin processes are excited without heating. Obvious candidates are weakly absorbing materials, such as ferrite garnets. However, the range of such materials and the range of their functionality are limited.The purpose of this workis to study the dynamics of systems with nonthermal mechanisms of spin precession excitation. Such excitation is possible in ferromagnetic / antiferromagnetic heterostructures with exchange interaction, provided that the recombination time of photocarriers is shorter than the time ofheat diffusion. Multilayer TbCo / FeCo structures of the near IR range were investigated for a femtosecond optical pulse. The spin dynamics are compared with the direction of the wave vector of the exciting pulse along and perpendicular to the axis of easy magnetization of the structures(“easy axis” and “hard axis” geometry, respectively). It is shown that in case of “easy axis” geometry the determinative mechanism is the thermal interaction. When the system is exposed to an excitation pulse, this mechanism leads to a decrease in the projection of magnetization on the direction of propagation of the test beam. In case of “hard axis” geometry, the magnetization turns to the magnetic field at the initial stage. Then it precesses and relaxes to an equilibrium angular orientation. Such dynamics indicate a rapid recovery of the uniaxial anisotropy field afterlaser irradiation. The presented results demonstrate an ultrafast change in the magnetic anisotropy induced during the fabrication of the heterostructure under study, which may be of interest for optical control of the orientation of the magnetization.
