- Abstract
Weave the wisdom of every one of the 12 zodiac signs into your everyday life with supportive practices like creativity prompts, tarot card pulls, and seasonal rituals. You are all 12 signs. Going beyond the popular Sun-Moon-Rising astrology, this insightful guide inspires you to expand the possibilities of who you think you can be. Transformational astrologer Britten LaRue teaches you how to embrace the whole of the zodiac, with month-by-month invitations to connect with the part of yourself that is each sign. For example, if you don't have any major placements in Leo in your chart, you might assume that you don't have any Leo qualities. But when you decide that you're not a Leo, you deny yourself the play, the visibility, and the big-hearted leadership that the Leo inside of you craves. Living Astrology shows you how to coax your inner Leo forward during Leo season with exercises like a tarot spread for accessing courage, journaling prompts to court your inner drag queen, and a ritual for connecting to your lion's heart under the New Moon. With supportive practices like creativity prompts, tarot card pulls, and altar settings to help you live what you learn, Living Astrology offers a radical and fresh take on the ancient wisdom of astrology. Because astrology isn't something that happens to you. It's something you live.

- Abstract
An illustrated hourly guide that follows twenty-four frogs as they eat, find mates, care for their young, and survive our harsh and changing planet. In this short book, celebrated biologist Marty Crump leads readers on a worldwide field trip in search of frogs. Each chapter of Frog Day covers a single frog during a single hour, highlighting how twenty-four different species spend their time. Our day begins at midnight in Indonesia, with the rustle of leaves above. It's not a bird, but Wallace's flying frog, using its webbed feet and emerald-green skin flaps to glide through the forest canopy. In the early hours of the morning, we hear a horned marsupial frog “bopping” and a wood frog “quacking” to attract mates. At six o'clock in the morning, beneath a streetlight in Honolulu, we meet a corpulent, invasive cane toad slurping insects—and sometimes snakes, lizards, turtles, birds, and mice. At noon, we watch parenting in action as an African bullfrog bulldozes a path through the mud to free his tadpoles from a drying pond. At dusk, in a Peruvian rain forest, we observe “the ultimate odd couple”—a hairy tarantula and what looks like a tiny amphibian pet taking shelter in the spider's burrow. Other frogs make a tasty meal for this tarantula, but the dotted humming frog is a friend, eating the ants that might otherwise make a meal of the tarantula's eggs. For each hour in our Frog Day, award-winning artist Tony Angell has depicted these scenes with his signature pen and ink illustrations. Working closely together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Crump and Angell have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two—and a true gift for readers, amateur scientists, and all frog fans.

Like so many other cities of South America, Rio is an urban sprawl containing some truly stunning contrasts. Yet Rio comes alive, really, for only two things – soccer and the samba. According to tradition, founded by the Portuguese navigator André Gonçalves on 1 January 1502, declared the capital of Brazil by King John in 1763, Rio underwent major reorganization under President Alvarez at the beginning of the 20th century. Avenues and boulevards were laid out in a logic that added overall cohesion to the city. The greatest architects of the time and place were invited to make use of their talents. The houses merge with the tropical countryside, which features banana and sugar plantations lining the large bay that is dominated by the Pão de Açúcar – the famous Sugar Loaf Mountain. Other tourist delights include the Carioca aqueduct, the São Bento monastery and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Candelária which are close to each other, and the Quinta da Boa Vista public park. Rio is also famous for its wonderful beaches – such as those of Copacabana and Ipanema – on which the most beautiful women in the world tan themselves to a gorgeous golden colour wearing the skimpiest of costumes. But there is so much to catch the eye in this city, from the areas of avant-garde architecture to the miserable shanties of the favelas – all of which empty themselves of their inhabitants during Carnival, when costumes may again be both imaginative and leave little to the imagination, or when there is an important football match on at the Maracanã Stadium. Like its population, Rio is a compound of all the colours, all the shades, between black and white.

Among the best-known ancient cities in our time, the capital of Greece contains much that is fascinating, including many archaeological treasures like the Acropolis and its temples. Athens remains a city both picturesque and dynamic. One third of the Greek population lives here, while its port, Piraeus, holds half of Greece's industry. So, once you have visited the city's temples, why not go round the flea markets or walk to the centre of the old town with its traders and traditional festivities? The return of the Olympic Games to their origins constitutes a major event for the town, providing the visitor with an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of its recently renovated sights.

Raili grew up taking two long bus rides to the beach in Orange County, CA, so that she could drink up the cool surfer fashion, laid-back atmosphere, and retro surfboard decor and bring it all right home to her bedroom. Surf Style at Home takes readers into Raili's colorful, surf-inspired, checkerboard-printed mind through homes she's designed — from quirky old beach cottages and an Alabama lake house to sprawling new-construction homes in Newport Beach, Montana's Yellowstone Club, and beyond. - Abstract
Key Selling Points This informative picture book introduces both background information and some of the most fascinating and surprising facts about ants. Each spread introduces a category and awards the “record holding” ant that exhibits the featured trait or behavior. Among them are ants that suck blood, count their steps and have been to space. Lively art, funny speech bubbles and humorous interactions among the illustrations add to the reading experience, making the facts even more memorable. The illustrator grew up around her grandfather, Harry Krogerus, who was an entomologist and famous insect collector. The author, who works as a science journalist, has a PhD in evolutionary biology, and she completed her thesis on the social evolution of ants. She worked as an ant researcher for about six years. The idea for the framework of this “book of records” came about after the author met with groups of children to find out what they most wanted to know. She discovered that many of the questions were framed in superlatives—which is the biggest, scariest, rarest or smartest ant?

- Abstract
In 1897, Gus embarked on a four-year career as a merchant seaman. While traveling the world, he discovered the art of tattooing, learning to tattoo from tribesmen in Java and Borneo who showed him how to use traditional handmade tools. By 1901, Gus reportedly had 264 tattoos of his own (and over 800 by 1908), allowing him to promote himself as “the most artistically marked-up man in America.” Back home, Gus embarked on a 40-year career as a traveling tattooist, tattooed man, and circus performer. He largely eschewed the new electric tattooing machines that transformed the art form after 1890, and remained faithful to his handheld instruments. With other wandering artists, he carried tattooing inland from coastal ports, making it part of the culture of small-town America in the 20th century. This book includes • more than 100 examples of Gus Wagner's tattoo flash as well as photos of his life and work, including his handheld tattooing tools; • excerpts from interviews with Gus, telling his story in his own words; and • selected passages from three of Herman Melville's novels—Typee, White Jacket, and Moby Dick, to illuminate the context of the oral history of Gus Wagner; Melville was an astute observer of hand tattoo artists and their clientele. The tattoo flash in this book is a testimony to the richness of Gus Wagner's image vocabulary, his life, and his artistic influences. This is the first in a series of three books exploring'the Last of the Hand Tattoo Artists.'The next two books will focus on Gus's wife, Maud, and their daughter, Lovetta, renowned hand tattoo artists in their own right.

- Abstract
Several Georgia cities had already served as capital when in 1868 the controversial decision was made to move the seat of state government to the upstart city of Atlanta, a move that became permanent in 1877. When government offices outgrew temporary quarters, a grand new structure was commissioned. Designed to emulate the new US Capitol Building in Washington, DC, the Georgia State Capitol building plans carried an unheard-of price tag of $1 million, taking four years to construct. With its imposing edifice rising 272 feet above one of the highest spots in the city, the capitol was the tallest building in Atlanta when it was dedicated on July 4, 1889. The imposing dome at its center was white plaster, but in the 1950s, gold mined in north Georgia was used to guild it. The glimmering Georgia State Capitol now shines at the center of still growing Atlanta skyline. Author Janice McDonald is fascinated by the rich history of her adopted city of Atlanta and has spent countless hours researching and exploring to learn more about it. The capitol's origins, its construction, and the people who have walked its halls are just some of the stories that make the Georgia State Capitol so memorable.

- Abstract
Arthur Gaulker, a successful real estate scion, gathered investors to create Electric Amusement Park in 1906. Gaulker's park was located near the Belle Isle Bridge just a few miles from downtown Detroit. Morris Wolff opened his Wolff's Park in 1906 directly across the street from Electric Park. Both parks spent lavishly and went bankrupt within a few years; however, other parks replaced them. By 1927, city officials had grown tired of the noise and widespread gambling, so they closed down the parks. Eastwood Park, Jefferson Beach Amusement Park, Edgewater Park, Walled Lake Park, and Bob Lo Park filled the void for years. Big bands got the parks through the Depression, multiple wars, and an onslaught of televised entertainment. However, costly fires, local opposition, and corporate competition became too much for the local parks, most of which were family-owned. Bob Lo Park, which closed in 1993, was the last to go out of business.

- Abstract
Several movements helped to define the era known as the Roaring Twenties. Prohibition brought about the speakeasy, moonshine, the flapper, and the arrival of the jazz age, while the elegance and glamour of the period permeated design and architecture in the Art Deco or Moderne style. During this time, Buffalo was a hub for transportation, design, music, and manufacturing. Some of the world's finest Art Deco buildings were constructed, and today, Buffalo is still rich with fine examples. City hall, Buffalo's crown jewel of the Art Deco movement, can still be toured daily. Across town, Central Terminal is being restored and revived to its original sophistication and glory. If one is looking for a live jazz show, stop by the Colored Musician Club and be sure to visit the museum. While the Art Deco period was short, other fine examples such as the Rand Building, the Courier Express Building, and the Pierce Arrow Showroom also represent the grandeur of the bygone era.

- Abstract
Venice was a major centre of art in the Renaissance: the city where the medium of oil on canvas became the norm. The achievements of the Bellini brothers, Carpaccio, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese are a key part of this story. Nowhere else has been depicted by so many great painters in so many diverse styles and moods. Venetian views were a speciality of native artists such as Canaletto and Guardi, but the city has also been represented by outsiders: J. M. W. Turner, Claude Monet, John Singer Sargent, Howard Hodgkin, and many more. Then there are those who came to look at and write about art. The reactions of Henry James, George Eliot, Richard Wagner and others enrich this tale. Nor is the story over. Since the advent of the Venice Biennale in the 1890s, and the arrival of pioneering modern art collector Peggy Guggenheim in the late 1940s, the city has become a shop window for the contemporary art of the whole world, and it remains the site of important artistic events. In this elegant volume, Gayford who has visited Venice countless times since the 1970s, covered every Biennale since 1990, and even had portraits of himself exhibited there on several occasions takes us on a visual journey through the past five centuries of the city known La Serenissima, the Most Serene. It is a unique and compelling portrait of Venice that will delight lovers of the city and lovers of its art.

- Abstract
The postcards in this collection reflect a hidden past of California that exists now only on the page. From college gates at Stanford destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and hotels in Catalina, Santa Barbara, and Oakland ravaged by fire to giant redwoods on the coast felled by storms and much of downtown Los Angeles razed in the name of the progress, California's landscape has changed dramatically in the last 125 years. The buildings demolished in San Diego's Balboa Park after the 1915 exposition closed are shown here as is downtown San Francisco before the earthquake and fire of 1906, amusement parks that decorated waterfronts from Long Beach to Santa Monica, and city halls from Anaheim to San Jose.

- Abstract
The beautiful Brentwood area of Contra Costa County is the oldest continuously populated community in California inland from the great coastal centers. Californios eschewed this challenging portion of the Central Valley, so pioneering physician John Marsh established a permanent settlement here in 1837 at his Rancho Los Meganos. Soon, the burgeoning viniculture, wheat, orchard, and cattle operations attracted many Gold Rush miners back to their original agricultural callings, now in the California Delta. The 1860s arrival of British agribusiness concern Balfour Guthrie Investment Company soon established the largest grain-export and fruit-packing venture in the West. Brentwood Township, established in 1878 and named for Marsh's ancestral home in England, includes some of the state's most bountiful land. The region fostered the greatest wheat production west of the Mississippi River during the 19th century. Carol A. Jensen, author of Arcadia Publishing's Byron Hot Springs, The California Delta, and East Contra Costa County, presents here in vintage photography the best of Brentwood, culled from local archives and collections. Combined with Jensen's prose, these images showcase Brentwood's progression from rural beginnings as an agricultural stronghold to the modern city of houses, shops, schools, and places of worship we know today.

- Abstract
Iowa Wesleyan University was founded in 1842, four years before Iowa's statehood. Pioneer Hall, in use by students and faculty by 1846, is among the oldest academic buildings in continuous use west of the Mississippi River. Abolition and women's enfranchisement were key hallmarks of this pioneer Methodist school. Iowa Wesleyan graduated its first female student, Lucy Killpatrick Byrkit, in 1859. Iowa Wesleyan's president, James Harlan, entered the national spotlight when he was elected to the US Senate in 1855. He was a stalwart abolitionist and supporter of Pres. Abraham Lincoln. Just after the Civil War, Iowa Wesleyan produced the first female attorney in the United States, Arabella Babb Mansfield (1866), who passed the bar exam in 1869. This small-town Iowa university also produced two explorers of space: James Van Allen (1935), discoverer of the magnetic belts that radiate around the planet, and Peggy Whitson (1981), the first female to serve as commander of the International Space Station. Today, Iowa Wesleyan University has the most diverse student body campus in Iowa, with young scholars hailing from small towns, big cities, and many nations abroad.
