Examines the paradoxes of kinship in the lives of unauthorized African migrants as they struggle for mobility, employment, and citizenship in Europe. In rapidly changing and highly precarious contexts, unauthorized African migrants turn to kinship in search of security, stability, and predictability. Through the exchange of identity documents between “siblings,” assistance in obtaining such documentation through kinship networks, and marriages that provide access to citizenship, new assemblages of kinship are continually made and remade to navigate the shifting demands of European states. These new kinship relations, however, often prove unreliable, taking on new, unexpected dynamics in the face of codependency; they become more difficult to control than those who enter into such relations can imagine. Through unusually close ethnographic work in West African migrant communities in Amsterdam, Apostolos Andrikopoulos reveals the unseen dynamics of kinship through shared papers, the tensions of race and gender that develop in mutually beneficial marriages, and the vast, informal networks of people, information, and documentation on which migrants rely. Throughout Argonauts of West Africa, Andrikopoulos demonstrates how inequality, exclusionary practices, and the changing policies of an often-violent state demand innovative ways of doing kinship to successfully navigate complex migration routes.

Toch hebben zij tijdens hun langdurig verblijf gewerkt en een bestaan opgebouwd. Hun familie en sociale netwerk zijn in Nederland. Velen hebben geen banden meer met het land van herkomst.Deze Juridische Verkenning van het vreemdelingenbeleid en wetgeving sinds de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw laat zien dat de groep oudere en langdurig verblijvende ongedocumenteerden ernstig gedupeerd is geraakt door een steeds engere interpretatie van onder meer het recht op verblijf op basis van persoonlijke schrijnende omstandigheden en op grond van gezinshereniging. Daarnaast is toegang tot voorzieningen, verstrekkingen en bijstand voor oudere ongedocumenteerden in Nederland sinds de introductie van de Koppelingswet in 1998 bemoeilijkt.De Juridische Verkenning maakt deel uit van een tweeluik samen met het sociaalwetenschappelijke onderzoek naar de leefsituatie van oudere ongedocumenteerden. 'Vechten met het leven'maakt deel uit van een tweeluik samen met Juridische Verkenning.‘Vechten met het leven'beschrijft de dagelijkse problematiek op het gebied van huisvesting, inkomen, gezondheid en sociale inbedding van de oudere langdurig verblijvende ongedocumenteerden in Nederland. Het rapport laat op soms onthutsende wijze zien hoe de ouderen, die vaak wel bij de overheid bekend zijn, een gemarginaliseerd bestaan leiden in de Nederlandse samenleving.Dit sociaalwetenschappelijke onderzoek naar de leefsituatie van oudere ongedocumenteerden maakt deel uit van een tweeluik samen met de Juridische Verkenning van het Recht op Voorzieningen en Verblijf van Ongedocumenteerde Ouderen in Nederland. Beide rapporten werden opgesteld op verzoek van De Regenboog Groep.De Regenboog Groep wil met deze twee onderzoeken een nationale discussie stimuleren over de onhoudbaarheid van het restrictieve vreemdelingenbeleid voor de groep oudere, langdurig in Nederland verblijvende ongedocumenteerden en de noodzaak om tot een duurzame oplossing te komen.

In Irregular Migrants in Belgium and the Netherlands, Masja van Meeteren studies the different ways in which irregular migrants live in Belgium and the Netherlands. The book offers an empirically grounded theoretical critique of the dominant research practice that focuses on'survival strategies', relies on comparisons of migrant communities and overemphasizes structural explanations. Instead, Irregular Migrants takes irregular migrants´ aspirations as a starting point of analysis. Based on this innovative research approach, key questions are answered regarding the lives of irregular migrants. How can we understand their patterns of economic and social incorporation, the transnational activities they engage in, and the significance of different forms of capital? Drawing on intensive participant observation, as well as more than two hundred in-depth interviews with irregular migrants and representatives of organizations that are involved with them, Irregular Migrants develops much-needed contextualized insights. As such, it sheds new light on previous research findings and various deadlocked scholarly debates on irregular migrants in Western societies.

Navigating Borders into the Netherlands provides a unique in-depth look at human smuggling processes. Based on biographical interviews with smuggled migrants in the Netherlands, the study reveals considerable differences that exist in smuggling's underlying causes, how journeys evolve, and outcomes of the process. This research from an insider's perspective clearly demonstrates that smuggled migrants are not passive actors, there is a broad variety in types of smugglers, and interactions between migrants and smugglers largely determine how the smuggling process evolves.
