1. Photon to axion conversion during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

Abstract

We investigate how the resonant conversion at a temperature $\bar{T}=25$-$65$ keV of a fraction of the CMB photons into an axion-like majoron affects BBN. The scenario, that assumes the presence of a primordial magnetic field and the subsequent decay of the majorons into neutrinos at $T\approx 1$ eV, has been proposed to solve the $H_0$ tension. We find two main effects. First, since we lose photons to majorons at $\bar{T}$, the baryon to photon ratio is smaller at the beginning of BBN $(T>\bar{T})$ than during decoupling and structure formation ($T\ll \bar{T}$). This relaxes the $2\sigma$ mismatch between the observed deuterium abundance and the one predicted by the standard $\Lambda$CDM model. Second, since the conversion implies a sudden drop in the temperature of the CMB during the final phase of BBN, it interrupts the synthesis of lithium and beryllium and reduces their final abundance, possibly alleviating the lithium problem., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures; new section added, matches version accepted by JCAP

2. Cosmology of an Axion-Like Majoron

Abstract

We propose a singlet majoron model that defines an inverse seesaw mechanism in the $\nu$ sector. The majoron $\phi$ has a mass $m_\phi\approx 0.5$ eV and a coupling to the $\tau$ lepton similar to the one to neutrinos. In the early universe it is initially in thermal equilibrium, then it decouples at $T\approx 500$ GeV and contributes with just $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.026$ during BBN. At $T=26$ keV (final stages of BBN) a primordial magnetic field induces resonant $\gamma \leftrightarrow \phi$ oscillations that transfer 6% of the photon energy into majorons, implying $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.55$ and a 4.7% increase in the baryon to photon ratio. At $T\approx m_\phi$ the majoron enters in thermal contact with the heaviest neutrino and it finally decays into $\nu \bar \nu$ pairs near recombination, setting $\Delta N_{\rm eff}=0.85$. The boost in the expansion rate at later times may relax the Hubble tension (we obtain $H_0=(71.4\pm 0.5)$ km/s/Mpc), while the processes $ \nu\bar \nu \leftrightarrow \phi$ suppress the free streaming of these particles and make the model consistent with large scale structure observations. Its lifetime and the fact that it decays into neutrinos instead of photons lets this axion-like majoron avoid the strong bounds that affect other axion-like particles of similar mass and coupling to photons., Comment: 23 pages, version to appear in JCAP

Abstract

The atmospheric neutrino flux includes a component from the prompt decay of charmed hadrons that becomes significant only at $E\ge 10$ TeV. At these energies, however, the diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos discovered by IceCube seems to be larger than the atmospheric one. Here we study the possibility to detect a neutrino interaction in down-going atmospheric events at km$^3$ telescopes. The neutrino signal will always appear together with a muon bundle that reveals its atmospheric origin and, generically, it implies an increase in the detector activity with the slant depth. We propose a simple algorithm that could separate these events from regular muon bundles., Comment: 19 pages, version to appear in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

In scenarios with extra dimensions the gravitational interaction may become strong at TeV energies. This could modify the $\nu$$N$ cross section and imply distinct signals at neutrino telescopes. In particular, cosmogenic neutrinos of $E\approx 10^9$ GeV could experience frequent interactions with matter where they lose a very small fraction of their energy. We define a consistent model of strong gravity at the TeV scale with just one extra dimension and a first Kaluza-Klein excitation of the graviton of mass around 1 GeV. We describe the collisions at transplanckian energies (multigraviton exchange, graviton emission and black hole formation) as well as the possible signature of these processes at km$^3$ telescopes and their impact in cosmogenic neutrino searches., Comment: Prepared for the book "Particle Physics with Neutrino Telescopes", C. 6. A realistic model for Dark Matter interactions in the neutrino portal paradigm

Abstract

We discuss a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) that provides an explicit realization of the dark-matter (DM) neutrino-portal paradigm. The dark sector is composed of a scalar $ \Phi $ and a Dirac fermion $ \Psi $, with the latter assumed to be lighter than the former. These particles interact with the SM through the exchange of a set of heavy Dirac fermion mediators that are neutral under all local SM symmetries, and also under the dark-sector symmetry that stabilizes the $ \Psi $ against decay. We show that this model can accommodate all experimental and observational constraints provided the DM mass is below $\sim 35\, \gev $ or is in a resonant region of the Higgs or $Z$ boson. We also show that if the dark scalar and dark fermion are almost degenerate in mass, heavier DM fermions are not excluded. We note that in this scenario DM annihilation in the cores of astrophysical objects and the galactic halo produces a monochromatic neutrino beam of energy $ \mfe $, which provides a clear signature for this paradigm. 8. One-loop flavor change in Little Higgs models

Abstract

The Little Higgs (LH) idea attempts to cure the little amount of fine-tuning necessary to bridge the gap between the Higgs mass (electroweak scale) and the new physics scale suggested by electroweak precision tests (~10 TeV). However, we show that LH models do not survive the confrontation with experimental limits on lepton flavor mixing, assuming the same naturalness arguments that motivate their introduction. The possibility to observe lepton flavour violating Z decays in the GigaZ option of DESY's TESLA project consistently with present bounds from other processes is analyzed in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. In particular, constraints on the slepton mass matrices from radiative lepton decays are updated and taken into account. Abstract

The origin and nature of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray events, above the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff energy, constitute a long-standing, unsolved mistery. Neutrinos are proposed candidates but their standard interactions with matter are too weak. In the context of a TeV-scale string theory, motivated by possible extra space dimensions, the neutrino-nucleon scattering is examined. Resonant string contributions increase substantially the standard model neutrino-nucleon cross section. 11. Predictions for Lepton Flavour Violation in Z decays

Abstract

Recent experimental results suggest that the neutrinos of the Standard Model are massive, though light. Therefore they may mix with each other giving rise to lepton flavour or even lepton number violating processes, depending on whether they are Dirac or Majorana particles. Furthermore, the lightness of the observed neutrinos may be explained by the existence of heavy ones, whose effects on LFV would be very sizeable. We present an analysis of the effect of massive neutrinos on flavour-changing decays of the Z boson into leptons, at the one-loop level, independent of neutrino mass models. 12. Resonant production of heavy MSSM Higgs bosons at the Photon Collider

Abstract

Assuming a light Higgs boson is discovered, its nature may remain unknown in case that no supersymmetric particles are found. The detection and study of heavier Higgs particles is then of great interest. For this purpose the Compton-collider option of a high energy e+e- linear collider is optimal both to produce Higgs bosons and to reveal their CP-parity. Assuming realistic photon luminosities for various configurations of laser and linac polarizations, we study the heavy, neutral MSSM Higgs signals for the most relevant decay modes as well as their corresponding backgrounds. The MSSM H and A Higgs bosons with masses up to a ~80% of the linac c.m.s. energy may be observed and their CP-parity tested for Higgs masses ~450 GeV, at the gamma-gamma mode of a ~1 TeV linear collider., Comment: 1+22 pages, 8 figures; to appear in Proc. of 2nd joint ECFA/DESY Workshop on Physics Studies for a Future Linear Collider (one reference added)

Abstract

We point out that the cross-section for the process $e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^- \tau^+ \tau^-$ at LEP is large enough to allow for a study of the anomalous electromagnetic couplings of the $\tau$ lepton. We show that the present bounds on the magnetic dipole moment can be improved and that competitive bounds can be obtained for the electric dipole moment using the data taken from 1992 to 1994. The opinions and conclusions expressed herein are those of the authors and do not represent any funding agencies., High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe standard model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the standard model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. Abstract

Physical review / D 63(5), 053004 (2001). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.63.053004, Present evidences for neutrino masses and lepton flavour mixings allow to predict, in the Standard Model with light neutrinos, branching rates for the decays Z --> e mu, mu tau, e tau of less than 10^{-54}, while present experimental exclusion limits from LEP 1 are of order 10^{-5}. The GigaZ option of the TESLA Linear Collider project will extend the sensitivity down to about 10^{-8}. Abstract

35 pp. (1999)., We discuss predictions for the lepton-flavour changing decays $Z \to e\mu, \mu \tau, e\tau$ which may be searched for at the Giga-Z option of the Tesla Linear Collider project with $Z$ resonance production rates as high as $10^9$. We try to be as model-independent as possible and consider both the Dirac and Majorana mass cases. The Standard Model, if being minimally extended by the inclusion of light neutrino masses with some mixings as observed in neutrino oscillation search experiments, predicts completely negligible rates. With a more general neutrino content quite interesting expectations may be derived.
