1. Improving the Robustness of the Projected Gradient Descent Method for Nonlinear Constrained Optimization Problems in Topology Optimization

Abstract

The Projected Gradient Descent (PGD) algorithm is a widely used and efficient first-order method for solving constrained optimization problems due to its simplicity and scalability in large design spaces. Building on recent advancements in the PGD algorithm where an inertial step component has been introduced to improve efficiency in solving constrained optimization problems this study introduces two key enhancements to further improve the algorithm's performance and adaptability in large-scale design spaces. First, univariate constraints (such as design variable bounds constraints) are directly incorporated into the projection step via the Schur complement and an improved active set algorithm with bulk constraints manipulation, avoiding issues with min-max clipping. Second, the update step is decomposed relative to the constraint vector space, enabling a post-projection adjustment based on the state of the constraints and an approximation of the Lagrangian, significantly improving the algorithm's robustness for problems with nonlinear constraints. Applied to a topology optimization problem for heat sink design, the proposed PGD algorithm demonstrates performance comparable to or exceeding that of the Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA), with minimal parameter tuning. These results position the enhanced PGD as a robust tool for complex optimization problems with large variable space, such as topology optimization problems.

Abstract

We analyzed the Hartree-Fock approximation for an electron system. The interaction between particles is modeled by a non-Coulombian potential. We analyzed both the three-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. We obtained accurate analytical results for the particle energy, the particle velocity, the ground state energy of the system as well as the momentum dependent density of states. 3. PoPreRo: A New Dataset for Popularity Prediction of Romanian Reddit Posts

Abstract

We introduce PoPreRo, the first dataset for Popularity Prediction of Romanian posts collected from Reddit. The PoPreRo dataset includes a varied compilation of post samples from five distinct subreddits of Romania, totaling 28,107 data samples. Along with our novel dataset, we introduce a set of competitive models to be used as baselines for future research. Interestingly, the top-scoring model achieves an accuracy of 61.35% and a macro F1 score of 60.60% on the test set, indicating that the popularity prediction task on PoPreRo is very challenging. Further investigations based on few-shot prompting the Falcon-7B Large Language Model also point in the same direction. We thus believe that PoPreRo is a valuable resource that can be used to evaluate models on predicting the popularity of social media posts in Romanian. 6. Analysis of clinical, dosimetric and radiomic features for predicting local failure after stereotactic radiotherapy of brain metastases in malignant melanoma

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of clinical, dosimetric and pretherapeutic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features for lesion-specific outcome prediction of stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) in patients with brain metastases from malignant melanoma (MBM). Methods: In this multicenter, retrospective analysis, we reviewed 517 MBM from 130 patients treated with SRT (single fraction or hypofractionated). For each gross tumor volume (GTV) 1576 radiomic features (RF) were calculated (788 each for the GTV and for a 3 mm margin around the GTV). Clinical parameters, radiation dose and RF from pretherapeutic contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MRI from different institutions were evaluated with a feature processing and elimination pipeline in a nested cross-validation scheme. Results: Seventy-two (72) of 517 lesions (13.9%) showed a local failure (LF) after SRT. The processing pipeline showed clinical, dosimetric and radiomic features providing information for LF prediction. The most prominent ones were the correlation of the gray level co-occurrence matrix of the margin (hazard ratio (HR): 0.37, confidence interval (CI): 0.23-0.58) and systemic therapy before SRT (HR: 0.55, CI: 0.42-0.70). The majority of RF associated with LF was calculated in the margin around the GTV. Conclusions: Pretherapeutic MRI based RF connected with lesion-specific outcome after SRT could be identified, despite multicentric data and minor differences in imaging protocols. Image data analysis of the surrounding metastatic environment may provide therapy-relevant information with the potential to further individualize radiotherapy strategies.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The PRIDE trial (NOA-28; ARO-2024-01; AG-NRO-06; NCT05871021) is designed to determine whether a dose escalation with 75.0 Gy in 30 fractions can enhance the median overall survival (OS) in patients with methylguanine methyltransferase (MGMT) promotor unmethylated glioblastoma compared to historical median OS rates, while being isotoxic to historical cohorts through the addition of concurrent bevacizumab (BEV). To ensure protocol-compliant irradiation planning with all study centers, a dummy run was planned and the plan quality was evaluated. METHODS: A suitable patient case was selected and the computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and O-(2-[18F]fluoroethyl)-L-tyrosine (FET) positron emission tomography (PET) contours were made available. Participants at the various intended study sites performed radiation planning according to the PRIDE clinical trial protocol. The treatment plans and dose grids were uploaded as Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) files to a cloud-based platform. Plan quality and protocol adherence were analyzed using a standardized checklist, scorecards and indices such as Dice Score (DSC) and Hausdorff Distance (HD). RESULTS: Median DSC was 0.89, 0.90, 0.88 for PTV60, PTV60ex (planning target volume receiving 60.0 Gy for the standard and the experimental plan, respectively) and PTV75 (PTV receiving 75.0 Gy in the experimental plan), respectively. Median HD values were 17.0 mm, 13.9 mm and 12.1 mm, respectively. These differences were also evident in the volumes: The PTV60 had a volume range of 219.1-391.3 cc (median: 261.9 cc) for the standard plans, while the PTV75 volumes for the experimental plans ranged from 71.5-142.7 cc (median: 92.3 cc). The structures with the largest deviations in Dice score were the pituitary gland (median 0.37, range 0.00-0.69) and the right lacrimal gland (median 0.59, range 0.42-0.78). CONCLUSIONS: The deviations revealed the necessity of systematic trainings with appropriate feedback before the start of clinical trials in radiation oncology and the constant monitoring of protocol compliance throw-out the study. Abstract

Aim of the study. Infrared thermography can be successfully used to obtain data about the functionality of the denture bearing mucosa of removable denture wearers. The purpose of the study was to test the distribution of the thermal field as concerns the symmetry and uniformity at the level of the support maxillary mucosa of mobile prosthesis wearers, with or without Candida-associated denture stomatitis (CADS). Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted upon subjects with different prosthetic status (n=66) placed into five groups: G1- complete denture wearers on the maxillary arch with CADS (n=22); G2- complete denture wearers on the maxillary arch with recent prostheses (n=12); G3- complete denture wearers on the maxillary arch with old prostheses (n=12); G4 – edentulous subjects without maxillary dentures (n=10); G5- dentate subjects (n=10). Biological samples for Candida were taken from all subjects, with inoculations on Sabouraud Dextrose medium enriched with chloramphenicol and thermography with ThermaCAM PM350 at the level of the maxillary mucosa and of the inner sides of the upper dentures for the subjects distributed in G1-G3. Results. The proportion of subjects for which the distribution of the thermal field at the level of the mucosa showed neither symmetry nor uniformity was significantly higher for the cases with CADS compared to the other 4 groups (symmetry/uniformity: p < 0.0001); the share of subjects for which the distribution of the thermal field showed neither symmetry nor uniformity was statistically significantly higher among the edentulous with CADS, compared to the other 2 groups (symmetry p < 0.0001; uniformity p = 0.004). Although the statistical threshold was not reached, among all the clinical cases with intact maxillary mucosa, the most frequent disturbances of the thermal architecture were found among the wearers of long-standing maxillary prostheses. Conclusion. Asymmetrical temperature distribution on the maxillary denture bearing mucosa as detected from thermal images coincides well with infective-inflammatory conditions such as Candida-associated denture stomatitis but can also be frequently detected in healthy maxillary mucosa in wearers of old complete dentures.

Abstract

Osteoporosis, a systemic disorder characterized by reduced bone density and microarchitectural deterioration, significantly affects bone health, including the mandibular and periodontal structures. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between osteoporosis and periodontal pathology using imaging techniques in patients diagnosed with osteoporosis. Material and methods: The retrospective, descriptive study included 63 patients diagnosed with osteoporosis and other systemic conditions. Periodontal status was assessed clinically and paraclinically using the EGOHID evaluation system, while bone density was evaluated radiographically using indices such as the Mandibular Cortical Index (MCI), Mental Index (MI), Panoramic Mandibular Index (PMI), and Mandibular Cortical Width (MCW). Results: Results revealed significant periodontal involvement, with 42.9% of patients exhibiting moderate chronic marginal periodontitis and 46% severe periodontitis, more pronounced in the maxillary arch than the mandibular. Radiographic evaluation demonstrated that 58.7% of patients with osteoporosis had a slightly eroded mandibular cortex (C2), while 34.9% showed severe erosion (C3). The average cortical thickness (MCW) was significantly reduced in osteoporotic patients compared to non-osteoporotic individuals, highlighting its potential as a screening indicator. Conclusions: Osteoporosis is strongly associated with significant periodontal alterations and mandibular cortical resorption. These findings underline the importance of integrating bone health assessments into periodontal evaluations, emphasizing the role of imaging as a non-invasive screening tool for osteoporosis.

Abstract

The Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) is the science module of the Canadian-built Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRISS has four observing modes: 1) broadband imaging featuring seven of the eight NIRCam broadband filters, 2) wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) at a resolving power of $\sim$150 between 0.8 and 2.2 $\mu$m, 3) single-object cross-dispersed slitless spectroscopy (SOSS) enabling simultaneous wavelength coverage between 0.6 and 2.8 $\mu$m at R$\sim$700, a mode optimized for exoplanet spectroscopy of relatively bright ($J<6.3$) stars and 4) aperture masking interferometry (AMI) between 2.8 and 4.8 $\mu$m enabling high-contrast ($\sim10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) imaging at angular separations between 70 and 400 milliarcsec for relatively bright ($M<8$) sources. This paper presents an overview of the NIRISS instrument, its design, its scientific capabilities, and a summary of in-flight performance. NIRISS shows significantly better response shortward of $\sim2.5\,\mu$m resulting in 10-40% sensitivity improvement for broadband and low-resolution spectroscopy compared to pre-flight predictions. Two time-series observations performed during instrument commissioning in the SOSS mode yield very stable spectro-photometry performance within $\sim$10% of the expected noise. The first space-based companion detection of the tight binary star AB Dor AC through AMI was demonstrated.

17. Nitrogen Balance and Uric Acid Excretion in Lohmann-Brown Hens Fed Diets with Different Crude Protein and Metabolizable Energy Levels

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of dietary metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) levels on nitrogen excretion and laying performance in laying hens. Four groups of 20-week-old Lohmann hens were fed different ME and CP level diets, expressed as higher (H) or lower (L) versus control: group HME/HCP (2,820 kcal ME/16.7% CP), group HME/LCP (2,820 kcal/14.8% CP), group LME/HCP (2,690 kcal/16.7% CP) and group LME/LCP (2,690 kcal/14.8% CP). The control group was fed a commercial diet (2,754 kcal/15.5% CP). Experimental feeding lasted 12 weeks. Egg production was significantly improved (P=0,015) in HME/HCP group. Feed conversion ratio was significantly lower (P=0.013) in HCP groups versus control). The amount of uric acid excreted by HCP groups was 40% higher versus LCP groups (P=0.000) and excreted uric nitrogen was 24.2% higher in HCP versus LCP groups (P=0.001). HCP groups excreted 0.43 g/cap./day more nitrogen versus LCP groups (P=0.001). HCP groups retained 0.21 g/egg mass/day more nitrogen versus LCP groups. ME-supplements did not significantly modify the amount of nitrogen excretion. In conclusion, the tested CP diet supplementations increase faecal nitrogen excretion and egg-retained nitrogen in layers. Effect on laying performances depends of CP level and CP/ME ratio in the diet.

Abstract

Abstract The growing demand for alternative energy sources to alleviate environmental impacts highlights the need to move from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This study demonstrated the technical feasibility of using a solar photovoltaic (PV) system for the production of green hydrogen. This research examined electrical and power data from a PV plant in Irecê, Bahia, using open data sources to provide insights into the production of green hydrogen from renewable sources. The system mainly depends on the use of a renewable source, PV solar energy, integrated with batteries, electrolyzers, and hydrogen tanks. Electrolyzer, battery, and hydrogen tank sizing analysis for optimal hydrogen production was effectively conducted using HOMER Energy software. The predicted system topology prioritizes a local DC network, optimizing efficiency for electrolyzers that have inherently low efficiency. The electrolyzer simulation involves initial Python‐based sizing and comprehensive sizing with HOMER Energy software, ensuring accuracy within a 10% discrepancy limit. This highlights the importance of analytical calculations and optimization software for sizing more complex systems.

Abstract

Periodontal diseases include gingivitis (inflammation of gingiva caused by the bacterial biofilm) and periodontitis involving loss of the supporting structures around the teeth, respectively cementum, periodontal ligament and alveolar bone. Diabetes increases the risk of periodontal diseases; the plausible mechanisms are: alterations in the immunoinflammatory response of bacteria, increased bone loss, the decrease in matrix-producing cells to maintain the periodontium, microvascular changes and alteration in collagen synthesis and metabolism. Treatment of periodontitis influence glycemic control in diabetic patients and intervention trial suggests that this can generate a reduction of circulating inflammatory markers and improves metabolic control in diabetic patients. International forums recommend oral examination as a component of medical care for diabetic patients. Our review summarizes current information on the association of diabetes with periodontal disease.

Abstract

Somatostatin is a peptide that plays a variety of roles such as neurotransmitter and endocrine regulator; its actions as a cell regulator in various tissues of the human body are represented mainly by inhibitory effects, and it shows potent activity despite its physiological low concentrations. Somatostatin binds to specific receptors, called somatostatin receptors (SSTRs), which have different tissue distributions and associated signaling pathways. The expression of SSTRs can be altered in various conditions, including tumors; therefore, they can be used as biomarkers for cancer cell susceptibility to certain pharmacological agents and can provide prognostic information regarding disease evolution. Moreover, based on the affinity of somatostatin analogs for the different types of SSTRs, the therapeutic range includes conditions such as tumors, acromegaly, post-prandial hypotension, hyperinsulinism, and many more. On the other hand, a number of somatostatin antagonists may prove useful in certain medical settings, based on their differential affinity for SSTRs. The aim of this review is to present in detail the principal characteristics of all five SSTRs and to provide an overview of the associated therapeutic potential in neoplasias.

Abstract

Aim of the study: Dentists frequently recommend panoramic radiographs (PR). Facial divergence is an indicator of the growth pattern, in relation to bite force and possible evolution of the VDO (vertical dimension of occlusion) over time. Materials and methods: Our study compared the measurement of the Frankfurt-mandibular plane angle (FMA) on the panoramic x-rays with the angle value measured on the profile tele-radiographs (lateral cephalograms). We have considered possible positioning errors caused by different head tilts while taking the PR. Results: Radiographs taken in disocclusion increased the determined FMA value by approximately 2° (2.28°). Conclusions: Even with some acceptable patient’s head tiltings and small positional asymmetries, the FMA measurements on the panoramic radiographs could be considered reliable.

Abstract

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract

This study introduces a high-resolution, data-driven approach for optimizing district heating networks using source-load mapping, focusing on Stockholm as a case study. The methodology integrates detailed building energy performance data (2014–2022) with geographic data from the Swedish Survey Agency, employing advanced clustering techniques such as K-means Clustering, Agglomerative Clustering, DBSCAN, Spectral Clustering, and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) Clustering to identify optimal locations for distributed heat sources, including data centers, supermarkets, and water bodies. Quantitative results show that these environmentally friendly sources could supply 54 % of Stockholm’s total annual heat demand of 7.7 TWh/year, equating to 4.2 TWh from residual heat sources. Data centers contribute 0.48 TWh, water bodies provide 3.4 TWh, and supermarkets contribute 0.3 TWh annually. Economic analysis further reveals that 98 % of residual heat sources are economically viable, with marginal costs of heat (MCOH) for data centers, supermarkets, and water bodies estimated at 12.7 EUR/MWh, 16.0 EUR/MWh, and 20.0 EUR/MWh, respectively—well below the Open District Heating (ODH) market price of 22.0 EUR/MWh. The policy implications of these findings are profound. Policymakers can leverage this methodology to identify economically viable heat sources, enabling the creation of regulations that incentivize the integration of distributed heat sources into existing district heating networks. This can lead to reduced energy costs, enhanced sustainability, and more resilient energy systems. Practically, urban planners and energy utilities can use clustering insights to optimize the placement of new infrastructure, such as data centers, ensuring they are strategically located in high-demand zones. Furthermore, the study’s methodology can be replicated in other urban contexts, offering cities worldwide a scalable tool for improving the efficiency and sustainability of their heating networks. These findings support the transition to low-carbon energy solutions and provide actionable recommendations for the long-term development of urban energy systems.

Abstract

Context: The need for socially innovative care models is crucial in addressing the challenges posed by ageing populations. Social innovations developed in other settings often require adaptation to ensure they are the best fit for a new setting. Perspective: We propose that participatory Theory of Change workshops can strengthen the development and adaptation of best-fit social innovations in long-term care by engaging multiple stakeholders to develop a program theory which describes how a complex programme or policy is hypothesised to work in a given context. We use an example from InCARE, a European Union funded project from 2020 to 2023, which aimed to develop and use participatory processes to design and implement social innovations for long-term care in Spain, Austria and North Macedonia. Implications: Theory of Change can work to develop a common vision with stakeholders, identify and adapt innovative ideas, engage early and meaningfully with stakeholders and partner with stakeholders who can support sustainability as well as outline the challenges and limitations inherent in the Theory of Change approach.

ABSTRACT Case report of a case of acute pancreatitis (AP) at a patient previously known with essential thrombocytosis (ET). The most redoubtable complications of AP in this case were: pancreatic necrosis and splahnic vein thrombosis (SVT). Patient was followed‐up for 3 months with complete resolution of SVT under anticoagulation. As far as we know this is the first case ever published suffering simultaneously from AP and ET, both conditions known for their increased risk of developing thrombi.

Abstract

A framework for topology optimization of cooling channels is proposed, which paves the way towards automated design of additively-manufactured cooling channels, required in applications such as the efficient heat management of die casting molds. Combining a selection of pertinent techniques and methods, the proposed density-based approach is strengthened by systematic verification and validation steps, including the body-fitted meshing of an optimized design. Furthermore, this work features applications to simplified, yet industrially-relevant cases, as well as a detailed discussion of the effects of the hyper-parameters of the optimization problem. These enable the reader to acquire a better understanding of the control and regularization mechanisms, which are necessary for a robust development towards complex scenarios.

Abstract

Lazerckerite, ideally Ag3.75Pb4.5(Sb7.75Bi4)S24, is a new mineral species found in medieval mine dumps of the historic Ag–Pb–Zn Kutná Hora ore district, Czech Republic. The mineral is associated with other Sb–Bi lillianite homologues (terrywallaceite, gustavite, holubite) and Ag,Bi-bearing galena, most frequently as grain aggregates and replacement rims of earlier Ag–Pb–Bi minerals, growing together in aggregates of up to 0.6×0.3 mm. Lazerckerite is opaque, is steel grey in colour, and has a metallic lustre; the calculated density is 5.920 g cm−3. In reflected light lazerckerite is greyish white, and bireflectance and pleochroism are weak with grey tints. Anisotropy is weak to moderate with grey to bluish-grey rotation tints. Internal reflections are not observed. Electron microprobe analyses yielded the empirical formula, based on 44 apfu, (Ag3.61Cu0.04)Σ3.65(Pb4.55Fe0.01Cd0.01)Σ4.57(Sb7.87Bi3.75)Σ11.62(S24.15Se0.01)Σ24.16. Its unit cell parameters are a=13.2083(9), b=19.4595(8), c=8.4048(13), β=90.032(7)°, V=2160.3(4) Å3, space group P21/c, and Z=2. The structure of lazerckerite contains two Pb sites (Pb1 and Pb2) in bicapped trigonal prismatic coordination, 8 independent octahedral sites, and 13 distinct sulfur positions. Four of the octahedral sites are mixed (Sb,Bi) and (Bi,Sb) sites, one is a mixed (Ag,Bi) site, and one is a mixed (Sb,Pb) site. The new mineral belongs to the andorite branch of the lillianite homologous series with N=4 and is a new addition to the group of Sb–Bi mixed members of the series. Lazerckerite is defined as a lillianite homologue with the three following requirements: N=4, L (Ag++ (Bi3+, Sb3+) ↔ 2 Pb2+ substitution) ≈ 90 %–95 %, and approximately one-third of atom percentage of antimony is replaced by bismuth (Bi/(Bi+Sb) ≈ 0.30–0.38). The new mineral has been approved by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA 2022-113) and named after Lazarus Ercker, the supreme Royal Bergmeister of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Master of Prague Mint.

Abstract

Abstract Hot dry rock (HDR) is regarded as a promising resource of geothermal energy and becomes an important field for future geothermal development due to its advantages of high temperature, wide distribution and huge reserves. At present, HDR research is mainly focused on the modeling and efficiency evaluation of power generation cycle, but its relationship with the source side of the system has not been considered in the field of integrated energy systems. Therefore, this paper proposes a day‐ahead scheduling method for regional integrated energy systems (RIES) with HDR based on information gap decision theory (IGDT). First, the heat transfer system model of HDR is established according to the energy flow model and basic structure of the HDR enhanced geothermal system (EGS). Second, a comprehensive geothermal energy system scheduling model is established from HDR based on the energy hub modeling structure. Then, the IGDT is introduced to analyze the renewable energy output uncertainty in the model. Finally, through a real RIES analysis, the simulation results verified the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed model. The scheduling cost was ¥47,073 when EGS participated in the scheduling. Access to EGS reduced the system's total 24‐h energy purchase by 8305 kW, natural gas consumption by 3051.9 m3, and total carbon emissions by 742.28 kg. The latter emphasized that the proposed model achieves the purpose of reducing the system cost, saving energy and reducing emissions.

Abstract

Capsaicin, the most prominent pungent compound of chilli peppers, has been used in traditional medicine systems for centuries; it already has a number of established clinical and industrial applications. Capsaicin is known to act through the TRPV1 receptor, which exists in various tissues; capsaicin is hepatically metabolised, having a half-life correlated with the method of application. Research on various applications of capsaicin in different formulations is still ongoing. Thus, local capsaicin applications have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, while systemic applications have a multitude of different effects because their increased lipophilic character ensures their augmented bioavailability. Furthermore, various teams have documented capsaicin’s anti-cancer effects, proven both in vivo and in vitro designs. A notable constraint in the therapeutic effects of capsaicin is its increased toxicity, especially in sensitive tissues. Regarding the traditional applications of capsaicin, apart from all the effects recorded as medicinal effects, the application of capsaicin in acupuncture points has been demonstrated to be effective and the combination of acupuncture and capsaicin warrants further research. Finally, capsaicin has demonstrated antimicrobial effects, which can supplement its anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic actions.

Abstract

Intracranial infectious complications (such as abscess) are commonly seen in patients with maxillo-facial area infections/inflammation or temporal bone area (generally ear) infections/inflammation. Cholesteatoma is a mass of soft tissue within the middle ear, consisting of keratinized squamous epithelium and keratin accumulation, with or without inflammation of the surrounding tissue. The study aimed to analyze CT and MRI using conventional and modern techniques for evaluating chronic suppurative cholesteatomatous and non-cholesteatomatous otitis in patients admitted urgently to assess the frequency of intracerebral complications. Material and methods: 30 patients with clinical diagnoses of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) underwent high-resolution CT (HRCT) and MRI to assess the extent of the disease and associated complications. The study involved analyzing imaging elements such as epitympanic lesions, ossicular erosions, and the presence of labyrinthitis ossificans. Results showed that 66.7% of the patients had right ear involvement, while 40% had left ear involvement. Common complications detected during CT included erosion of the sinodural angle and tegmen tympani, with abscesses being a major complication in 96.7% of cases. MRI sequences such as T1, T2, Flair, and advanced diffusion-weighted techniques (non-EPI) were used efficiently, detecting abscesses and complications in the middle cranial fossa in 96.7% of cases. Streptococcus pneumoniae was the most frequently encountered germ, highlighting the need for focused prevention and treatment measures. Conclusions: CT is effective in identifying bone destructions and intracranial complications, while MRI, especially with diffusion-weighted sequences, offers superior differentiation of cholesteatoma from other soft tissue lesions and evaluation of its extent. Combining CT and MRI provides a comprehensive and precise evaluation, facilitating efficient clinical management and improving patient prognosis.

Abstract The transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (NRF2) has multifarious action with its target genes having redox‐regulating functions and being involved in inflammation control, proteostasis, autophagy, and metabolic pathways. Therefore, the genes controlled by NRF2 are involved in the pathogenesis of myriad diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. Amidst this large array of diseases, diabetic neuropathy (DN) occurs in half of patients diagnosed with diabetes and appears as an injury inflicted upon peripheral and autonomic nervous systems. As a complex effector factor, NRF2 has entered the spotlight during the search of new biomarkers and/or new therapy targets in DN. Due to the growing attention for NRF2 as a modulating factor in several diseases, including DN, this paper aims to update the recently discovered regulatory pathways of NRF2 in oxidative stress, inflammation and immunity. It presents the animal models that further facilitated the human studies in regard to NRF2 modulation and the possibilities of using NRF2 as DN biomarker and/or as target therapy.

Abstract

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract

It is important for patients to understand that these conditions can be treated, but the success of treatment greatly depends on their level of oral hygiene. Selecting the appropriate toothbrush and mastering the correct brushing technique to effectively remove dental plaque while avoiding any potential damage to the gums. In addition to toothbrushes, there are other devices available for comprehensive dental cleaning, such as floss, interdental sticks, interdental brushes, and oral irrigators. Currently, self-care recommendations for dental implants are primarily based on existing knowledge regarding natural teeth cleaning. Patient education on oral hygiene is an important component of their overall treatment. Maintaining a regular oral hygiene routine is essential for taking care of our mouths, ensuring healthy teeth, and achieving fresh breath. In conclusion, biofilm disruption mechanical methods integrated is indispensable for comprehensive oral healthcare.

Abstract

Background. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the degree of mineralization as well of the chemical composition at the interface of failed dental implants with surrounding bone. Material and methods. The analysis was performed on human histological samples by the aid of a scanning electron microscope and an energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (ESEM-EDX). Results. The middle and the apical region of the implant surfaces had higher quantity of bone tissue deposition. A higher degree of mineralization was observed in these two regions as well. Conclusion. From the analysis performed by the aid of scanning electron microscopy, it appears that the bone tissue deposition is better represented in the middle and apical region of the implants.
