Abstract

Inclusive electron scattering cross sections off a hydrogen target at a beam energy of 10.6 GeV have been measured with data collected from the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. These first absolute cross sections from CLAS12 cover a wide kinematic area in invariant mass W of the final state hadrons from the pion threshold up to 2.5 GeV for each bin in virtual photon four-momentum transfer squared $Q^2$ from 2.55 to 10.4~GeV$^2$ owing to the large scattering angle acceptance of the CLAS12 detector. Comparison of the cross sections with the resonant contributions computed from the CLAS results on the nucleon resonance electroexcitation amplitudes has demonstrated a promising opportunity to extend the information on their $Q^2$ evolution up to 10 GeV$^2$. Together these results from CLAS and CLAS12 offer good prospects for probing the nucleon parton distributions at large fractional parton momenta $x$ for $W$ < 2.5 GeV, while covering the range of distances where the transition from the strongly coupled to the perturbative regimes is expected.

Abstract

This paper presents the multiplicity of neutral and charged hadrons produced in 90 GeV$/c$ proton-carbon interactions from a dataset taken by the NA61/SHINE experiment in 2017. Particle identification via dE/dx was performed for the charged hadrons $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $p / \bar{p}$; the neutral hadrons $K^0_S$, $\Lambda$, and $\bar{\Lambda}$ were identified via an invariant mass analysis of their decays to charged hadrons. Double-differential multiplicity results as a function of laboratory momentum and polar angle are presented for each particle species; these results provide vital constraints on the predicted neutrino beam flux for current and future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Abstract

The MUon Scattering Experiment (MUSE) was motivated by the proton radius puzzle arising from the discrepancy between muonic hydrogen spectroscopy and electron-proton measurements. The MUSE physics goals also include testing lepton universality, precisely measuring two-photon exchange contribution, and testing radiative corrections. MUSE addresses these physics goals through simultaneous measurement of high precision cross sections for electron-proton and muon-proton scattering using a mixed-species beam. The experiment will run at both positive and negative beam polarities. Measuring precise cross sections requires understanding both the incident beam energy and the radiative corrections. For this purpose, a lead-glass calorimeter was installed at the end of the beam line in the MUSE detector system. In this article we discuss the detector specifications, calibration and performance. We demonstrate that the detector performance is well reproduced by simulation, and meets experimental requirements.

Abstract

Measuring Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering on the neutron is one of the necessary steps to understand the structure of the nucleon in terms of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs). Neutron targets play a complementary role to transversely polarized proton targets in the determination of the GPD $E$. This poorly known and poorly constrained GPD is essential to obtain the contribution of the quarks' angular momentum to the spin of the nucleon. DVCS on the neutron was measured for the first time selecting the exclusive final state by detecting the neutron, using the Jefferson Lab longitudinally polarized electron beam, with energies up to 10.6 GeV, and the CLAS12 detector. The extracted beam-spin asymmetries, combined with DVCS observables measured on the proton, allow a clean quark-flavor separation of the imaginary parts of the GPDs $H$ and $E$., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Measurements of $K_S^0$ meson production via its $\pi^{+} \pi^{-}$ decay mode in inelastic $\textit{p+p}$ interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 GeV/$c$ ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8$ and $12.3$ GeV, respectively) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Double-differential distributions were obtained in transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of $K_S^0$ mesons were determined to be $(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.22 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 31 GeV/$c$, $(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.31 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 40 GeV/$c$ and $(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.37 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$ at 80 GeV/$c$. Abstract

The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central $^{40}$Ar +$^{45}$Sc collisions at 13$A$, 19$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, and 75$A$ GeV/$c$. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model., Comment: 38 pages, 20 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the energy dependence of multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in p+p interactions at beam momenta 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 GeV/c. Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified with the use of cumulants and factorial cumulants. Cumulant ratios are an essential tool in the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions. Measurements performed in p+p interactions provide a vital baseline estimation in these studies. Abstract

Strong interactions preserve an approximate isospin symmetry between up ($u$) and down ($d$) quarks, part of the more general flavor symmetry. In the case of $K$ meson production, if this isospin symmetry were exact, it would result in equal numbers of charged ($K^+$ and $K^-$) and neutral ($K^0$ and $\overline K^{\,0}$) mesons in the final state. Here, we report results on the relative abundance of charged over neutral $K$ meson production in argon and scandium nuclei collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 11.9 GeV per nucleon pair. We find that the production of $K^+$ and $K^-$ mesons at mid-rapidity is $(18.4\pm 6.1)\%$ higher than that of the neutral $K$ mesons. Although with large uncertainties, earlier data on nucleus-nucleus collisions in the collision center-of-mass energy range $2.6 < \sqrt{s_{NN}} < 200$~\GeV are consistent with the present result. Using well-established models for hadron production, we demonstrate that known isospin-symmetry breaking effects and the initial nuclei containing more neutrons than protons lead only to a small (few percent) deviation of the charged-to-neutral kaon ratio from unity at high energies. Thus, they cannot explain the measurements. The significance of the flavor-symmetry violation beyond the known effects is 4.7$\sigma$ when the compilation of world data with uncertainties quoted by the experiments is used. Abstract

Allelopathic activity of Cuscuta epithymum L. (CVCEY), Cuscuta campestris Yuncker (CVCCA), Phelipanche ramosa (L.) Pomel (ORARA), Phelipanche mutelii (Schultz) Reuter (ORARM) and Phelipanche spp. (PHESS) on germination and initial development of test plats of Lactuca sativa L. cultivar 'Great Lakes' was studied under laboratory conditions. It was found that, water exracts of the parasitic weed species in concentrations 0.4, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, 6.4 and 12.8% w/v have a relatively high inhibitory effect on the seed germination of test plants. The inhibiting rate of parasitic weed species from family Convolvulaceae ranges from 6.24 to 100.0% and for the species of family Orobanchaceae from 42.1 to 100.0%. Parasitic weed species from family Orobanchaceae (Ph. ramosa, Ph. mutelii and Phelipanche spp.) showed a considerably stronger allelopathic effect (GIaverage 17.9), as compared with the applied concentrations of water exracts of species from family Convolvulaceae (C. epithymum and C. campestris) (GIaverage 22.7).

18. Popping characteristics of sorghum genotypes (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench)

Abstract

Twelve genotypes (varieties, hybrids, mutant and hybrid lines) of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) were studied. The objective of the study was to determine the popping performance and to establish the relationships with some biochemical parameters (content of crude proteins, starch, moisture) and grain characteristics (pericarp color, grain width, 1000-grain weight). Popping yield of sorghum grain genotypes was in range 32.0% - 72.0%. The highest influence on popping yield had 1000-grain weight (r = 0.831), starch content (r = -0.356), followed by moisture content (r = 0.212) and crude proteins (r = 0.282). It was found that the endosperm of the seeds expanded poorly in most genotypes with white coloring of the pericarp (from 33.3 to 90.1%), while for those with a dark-colored seed pericarp, the expansion was from 50.0% to 160.0%. Mutant line M1 (6282) (dark brown color of the pericarp) and hybrid line 1643 (white color of the pericarp) stood out with relatively better popping characteristics and particle size of popped grains. This study demonstrated one of the qualities of sorghum grain- poppability and opportunities for enrichment of the genetic diversity for the breeding program in this culture.

Abstract

Nitrogen content in plant biomass yield of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) and cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) was determined as related to the different concentrations of nitrogen supply. Plants were grown sole and in mixture as symbiotrophic or heterotrophic cultures under controlled mineral elements concentration in the media and inoculation with rhyzobial strain. Two concentrations of inorganic nitrogen were tested: 0.125 mM (N1) and 1.25 mM (N2). Experimental variants: subterranean clover (100%) + N1; subterranean clover (100%) + N2; cocksfoot (100%) + N1; cocksfoot (100%) + N2; subterranean clover + cocksfoot (50:50%) + N1; subterranean clover + cocksfoot (50:50%) + N2. Inorganic nitrogen concentration had greater effect on shoot yield nitrogen content than on root yield nitrogen content for both crops. Nitrogen content in whole plant biomass yield of subterranean clover grown either sole or in mixture with cocksfoot was almost three times greater under high nitrogen concentration. Nitrogen use efficiency was highest in the mixture.

Abstract

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ produced in $^{40}$Ar+$^{45}$Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13$A$, 19$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 75$A$ and 150$A$~\GeVc. The analysis uses the 10\% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm$/$\pi^\pm$ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm$ transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $p$+$p$ and central Pb+Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

Abstract

The new experimental measurements of beam spin asymmetry were performed for the deeply virtual exclusive $\pi^0$ production in a wide kinematic region with the photon virtualities $Q^2$ up to 8 GeV$^2$ and the Bjorken scaling variable $x_B$ in the valence regime. The data were collected by the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS12) at Jefferson Lab with longitudinally polarized 10.6 GeV electrons scattered on an unpolarized liquid-hydrogen target. Sizable asymmetry values indicate a substantial contribution from transverse virtual photon amplitudes to the polarized structure functions.The interpretation of these measurements in terms of the Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) demonstrates their sensitivity to the chiral-odd GPD $\bar E_T$, which contains information on quark transverse spin densities in unpolarized and polarized nucleons and provides access to the proton's transverse anomalous magnetic moment. Abstract

The MUSE experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute is measuring elastic lepton-proton scattering cross sections in a four-momentum transfer range from $Q^2$ of approximately 0.002 to 0.08 GeV$^2$ using positively and negatively charged electrons and muons. The extraction of the Born cross sections from the experimental data requires radiative corrections. Estimates of the instrumental uncertainties in those corrections have been made using the ESEPP event generator. The results depend in particular on the minimum lepton momentum that contributes to the experimental cross section and the fraction of events with hard initial-state radiation that is detected in the MUSE calorimeter and is excluded from the data. Abstract

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. Abstract

This paper presents multiplicity measurements of charged hadrons produced in 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon interactions. The measurements were made using data collected at the NA61/SHINE experiment during two different data-taking periods, with increased phase space coverage in the second configuration due to the addition of new subdetectors. Particle identification via $dE/dx$ was employed to obtain double-differential production multiplicities of $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $p$, $\bar{p}$, $K^+$ and $K^-$. These measurements are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in intervals of laboratory polar angle covering the range from 0 to 450 mrad. They provide crucial inputs for current and future long-baseline neutrino experiments, where they are used to estimate the initial neutrino flux.

26. Determination of non-cytotoxic antiviral concentrations of purine and indole derivatives in vitro

Abstract

Mammalian cells from lines derived from bovine embryonic trachea (EBTr) were used in the present study. After the formation of semi-confluent monolayers, one subpopulation of cells was inoculated with the vaccine avian poxvirus strain FK (fowl) and the other with the vaccine avian poxvirus strain Dessau (pigeon) (Poxviridae family). Twenty-four hours after viral inoculation, individual subsets of infected cells were treated with the purine derivative aminophylline and the remaining subsets with the indole derivative ergotamine tartrate, respectively. The effects of the analogues thus administered on the cells were recorded at the 24th hour and 48th hour after treatment with each substance, respectively. In cells inoculated with the FK viral strain and treated with both aminophylline and ergotamine tartrate, decreased cell viability was observed at all dilutions at the 48th hour post-treatment compared to the 24th hour. In aminophylline-treated cells, these differences were not statistically significant, unlike in ergotamine tartrate-treated cells, where they were statistically significant. In the same cells infected with the Dessau strain and treated with aminophylline, although decreased cell viability was found at the 48th hour of treatment compared to the 24th hour, in most cases no statistically significant differences were found. In cells infected with the same strain but treated with ergotamine tartrate, despite the lack of statistically significant differences, increased cell viability was seen at the 48th hour post-treatment compared to the 24th hour, specifically at the higher concentrations of 10-3 and 10-4 M/mL. These results suggest a lower cytotoxicity of aminophylline compared to ergotamine tartrate, but on the other hand, a higher anti-viral activity of ergotamine tartrate against the Dessau virus strain compared to aminophylline in in vitro conditions. Further studies need to be conducted in this regard.

Abstract

Roma is the largest minority in Europe and the problems considering its segregation have to be investigated. The main goal of the present paper is to realise a bibliometric analysis which is going to find: the primary authors who investigated the topic of Roma segregation and the ghettoized urban structures; their publishing interactions based on factors such as their affiliation with the research organisation, and their country; and the most cited publications. The bibliometric analysis is based on the Scopus database. 265 selected documents, published between January 1999 and December 2023, were analysed. The papers of researchers from the United Kingdom, Hungary and Romania are the most cited. The cooccurrence analysis showed that, logically, the word “Roma” is the keyword with the greatest total link strength. The study also gives an insight into the collaboration between the main researchers, scientific organisations, and countries.

28. Clinical and echocardiographic characteristics of patients with atrial cardiomyopathy and their impact on prognosis

Abstract

Introduction: Patients with diverse demographic and clinical characteristics and comorbidities are included in the category of atrial cardiomyopathy (ACM). Aim: Our study aims to evaluate the demographic, clinical, laboratory, and echocardiographic parameters of patients with ACM and to assess their impact on prognosis. Materials and methods: Only 200 of the 724 consecutively evaluated patients with dilated left atrium who met the criteria for advanced ACM were included in the analysis. Forty age- and sex-matched controls with normal left atrial volume were also included. On enrollment, all patients received a detailed echocardiography with volumetric and speckle tracking analysis, and they were followed for 36 months for cardiovascular outcomes, including mortality. Results: The mean age of the ACM population was 73.91±9.74 years, with 58% being women. Hypertension was found in 93% of them, 79% had atrial fibrillation, 60% had heart failure, 37% were obese, and 26% had diabetes. Over a median follow-up of 20.6 months, 35 deaths were registered in the ACM group compared to 1 death in the control group (17.5% vs. 2%, p=0.011). The presence of heart failure (HR 5.2, p=0.004), cancer (HR 3.7, p=0.007), severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) (HR 5.4, p−17 %.

Abstract This paper presents the energy dependence of multiplicity and net-electric charge fluctuations in p+p interactions at beam momenta 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . Results are corrected for the experimental biases and quantified with the use of cumulants and factorial cumulants. Cumulant ratios are an essential tool in the search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter in heavy ion collisions. Measurements performed in p+p interactions provide a vital baseline estimation in these studies. The measured signals are compared with the string hadronic models Epos1.99 and FTFP-BERT.

Abstract

Inosine Acedoben Dimepranol (IAD) has immunomodulatory and antiviral properties and is used in the treatment of viral infections. The aim of the present study was to develop a powder for oral solution in sachets containing high dose IAD (1000 mg). The formulations were prepared by direct dry mixing of the components using the dilution principle. Optimal composition and process parameters for the development of high dosage powder were established. Solubility studies showed pH-dependent solubility of IAD. The prepared powder was characterized by a short reconstitution time. In addition, the oral solution exhibits good organoleptic properties and remains stable for 30 min. Stability studies indicated that the sachets remained stable under accelerated conditions for 3 months. In conclusion, the developed powder for oral solution in sachets containing 1000 mg IAD represents an economical alternative to other solid dosage forms with the advantages of rapid dissolution and convenient intake for the patient.

31. 'I Cannot Afford Lunch': How Students' Narratives of Food Insecurity Reveal Difficulties and Coping Strategies before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Community college students may become more vulnerable to food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may eventually impact their health, shape their interpretations of food insecurity and injustice within their lives, and cause them to reevaluate the support that they need from their community college. This study analyzes the food security experiences of 1,278 students during the semester before and first year of the pandemic using survey measures and narrative methodology. While students' reported levels of food insecurity did not increase after the start of the pandemic, students reported feeling less embarrassment about and greater likelihood of using food support programs. After the pandemic began, students reflected on their food security experiences in different ways. They became more likely to focus on the wellbeing of fellow students, advocate for campus food support programs, and highlight financial and nutritional problems that relate to food insecurity. They also became less likely to judge their community college for possible failures in supporting food insecure students. These changes suggested that the pandemic impacted students' understanding of food insecurity and related support programs and perhaps made students be less judgmental and more open-minded about how their college institution can support food insecure students. These findings offer implications for why and how community colleges should support food insecure students.

32. Higher Education as a Public Good and Social Cohesion: An Exploratory Study from a European Comparative Perspective

Abstract

In the context of higher education's growing significance and the persistence of inequalities in it, the article aims to further develop the understanding of higher education as a public good and to explore its association with social cohesion in a European comparative perspective. It shifts the focus from the content of higher education as a driver of its social contributions towards the role of higher education realisation in a given society as determining its social effects. Two new methodological instruments are developed: an index of higher education as a public good and an index of social cohesion. The analysis draws on data from Eurostat, the EUROSTUDENT Survey VII, and the European Social Survey, Round 10. The results indicate substantial cross-country differences in social cohesion and in the realisation of higher education as a public good. The article identifies a positive association between the realisation of higher education as a public good in a given country and the level of social cohesion there. From the four dimensions of higher education as a public good related to access, participation, completion, and the state's commitment to its development, the strongest relationship is between the state's commitment to its development and social cohesion.

33. Does Participation in Non-Formal Adult Education Matter for Individual Subjective Well-Being as a Multidimensional Functioning?

Abstract

The article synthesizes ideas from the capability approach, the embeddedness approach, and Nancy Fraser's three-dimensional scale of justice and develops a theoretical framework for understanding subjective well-being (SWB) as a positive functioning. It also proposes an instrument for measuring SWB and its relationship with participation in non-formal adult education. Using data from the European Social Survey, carried out in 2012, for 24 European countries and applying multilevel linear models for the analysis, the study finds evidence for a positive association between participation in non-formal adult education and SWB. The results show that differences in the SWB among people who have participated in non-formal adult education and those who have not are higher for those who have no higher education and are unemployed than for those who have higher education and paid work. This study also reveals that when people live in countries with better economic and democratic development and a more individualistic culture, the differences in their SWB by participating in non-formal adult education are smaller than when they live in countries with worse economic and democratic development and a more collectivistic culture.

Abstract

The critical point of dense, strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS in ${}^{40}$Ar + ${}^{45}$Sc collisions at 150A GeV/c. The dependence of second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distribution on the number of subdivisions of transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis is performed using both transverse momentum and cumulative transverse momentum. For the first time, statistically independent data sets are used for each subdivision number. The obtained results do not indicate any statistically significant intermittency pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of critical proton pairs and the power of the correlation function is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model developed for this purpose., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

This paper presents the results of the research on allelopathic effect of cold aqueous extracts from root systems of Johnson grass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) on the seed germination and the initial development of soybean (Glycine max (L.)), pea (Pisum sativum (L.)) and vetch (Vicia sativa (L.)) under laboratory conditions. It was established that the inhibitory effect of aqueous root extracts on the seed germination of soybean, peas and vetch varied between 28.8 and 86.3%. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of aqueous root extracts of Johnson grass varied between 17.1 and 86.1% on the development of the initial germ and between 8.3% and 97.9% on the accumulation of fresh biomass in the initial germ of soybean, peas and vetch. The values of LC50(P=0.05) were established to vary between 46.40 and 98.28 g l-1 dry biomass from root systems of Johnson grass and can be arranged in the following order: soybean → peas → vetch.

40. Regional and Ethnic Disparities of School-to-Work Transitions in Bulgaria

Abstract

Bulgaria's educational and economic landscapes are marked by substantial regional disparities that are interlaced with ethnic inequalities in school-to-work transitions. Young adults from Roma and Turkish origins particularly suffer from disadvantages with respect to education and labour market participation. We ask how ethnicity affects labour market entry in Bulgaria once educational resources of different ethnic groups are accounted for, and how regional contexts impact ethnic disparities in employment insecurities. Building on comparative school-to-work transition (STWT) concepts and on the labour queueing approach, we assume that ethnic disparities in the STWTs of youths in Bulgaria depend on the degree of urbanisation and the strength and structure of the regional economy. The study draws on data from the Bulgarian School Leaver Survey 2014 of 2103 young adults who had left education in the five years preceding the survey. Descriptive analysis and multilevel logistic regression models were applied to analyse STWT patterns with a special focus on education, regional contexts, and ethnicity. The results highlight that STWT risks differ considerably across the Bulgarian regions. The strength of the local economy thereby moderates ethnic disparities. Young people from Roma and Turkish origins are much less disadvantaged to transition towards employment compared to ethnic Bulgarians the stronger the local economy gets. Our study has several policy implications. In addition to the development of public and private employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people, special attention should also be paid to the development of quality vocational education at the national and regional level.

Abstract

This paper reports measurements of two-pion Bose-Einstein (HBT) correlations in Be+Be collisions at a beam momentum of 150$A\,\mbox{GeV}/\textit{c}$ by the $\mbox{NA61/SHINE}$ experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. The obtained momentum space correlation functions can be well described by a L\'evy distributed source model. The transverse mass dependence of the L\'evy source parameters is presented, and their possible theoretical interpretations are discussed. The results show that the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is approximately constant as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ , and far from both the Gaussian case of $\alpha = 2$ or the conjectured value at the critical endpoint, $\alpha = 0.5$. The radius scale parameter $R$ shows a slight decrease in $m_{\rm{T}}$, which can be explained as a signature of transverse flow. Finally, an approximately constant trend of the intercept parameter $\lambda$ as a function of $m_{\rm{T}}$ was observed, different from measurement results at RHIC.

44. Genomic Exploration of a Chitinolytic Streptomyces albogriseolus PMB5 Strain from European mantis (Mantis religiosa)

Abstract

The genus Streptomyces is renowned not only for its natural antibiotic production but also for its abundant chitinolytic enzymes, which break down stubborn chitin into chitooligosaccharides. Despite this, there have been limited studies utilizing whole-genome sequencing to explore the repertoire of chitin degradation and utilization genes in Streptomyces. A particularly compelling source of novel antimicrobials and enzymes lies in the microbiota of insects, where bacterial symbionts produce antimicrobials to protect against opportunistic pathogens and enzymes to adapt to the environment. In this study, we present the chitinolytic strain Streptomyces albogriseolus PMB5, isolated from the insectivorous Mantis religiosa (European mantis). Whole-genome sequencing revealed that PMB5 harbors a linear chromosome of 7,211,961 bp and a linear plasmid of 327,989 bp. The genome comprises 6683 genes, including 6592 protein-coding sequences and 91 RNA genes. Furthermore, genome analysis revealed 19 biosynthetic gene clusters covering polyketides, terpenes, and RiPPs, with 10 clusters showing significant gene similarity (>80%) to known clusters like antimycin, hopene, and geosmin. In the genome of S. albogriseolus PMB5, we were able to identify several antibiotic resistance genes; these included cml (resistance to phenicol), gimA (resistance to macrolides), parY (resistance to aminocoumarin), oleC/oleD (resistance to macrolides), novA (resistance to aminocoumarin) and bla/blc (resistance to beta-lactams). Additionally, three clusters displayed no similarity to known sequences, suggesting novel bioactive compound discovery potential. Remarkably, strain PMB5 is the first reported S. albogriseolus capable of thriving on a medium utilizing chitin as a carbon source, with over 50 chitin-utilizing genes identified, including five AA10 family LPMOs, five GH18 chitinases, and one GH19 chitinase. This study significantly enhances the genomic understanding of S. albogriseolus, a species previously underrepresented in research, paving the way to further exploration of the biotechnological potential of the species.

Abstract

Abstract The yields of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons have been measured in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 31, 40 and 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7, 8.8$$ s NN = 7.7 , 8.8 and 12.3 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}$$ Ge V , respectively). The data were recorded by the NA61 $$/$$ / SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and the $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons identified via their decays into $$\pi ^{+} \pi ^{-}$$ π + π - pairs. Double-differential distributions are presented as function of transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicities of $$K^0_S$$ K S 0 mesons were determined to be $$(5.95 \pm 0.19 (stat) \pm 0.30 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 5.95 ± 0.19 ( s t a t ) ± 0.30 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 31 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c , $$(7.61 \pm 0.13 (stat) \pm 0.43 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 7.61 ± 0.13 ( s t a t ) ± 0.43 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 40 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c and $$(11.58 \pm 0.12 (stat) \pm 0.55 (sys)) \times 10^{-2}$$ ( 11.58 ± 0.12 ( s t a t ) ± 0.55 ( s y s ) ) × 10 - 2 at 80 $$\text {Ge}\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with the production of charged kaons in corresponding reactions and with model calculations (Epos1.99, SMASH 2.0 and PHSD) as well as with published data from other experiments.

Abstract

Abstract The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central $$^{40}$$ 40 Ar + $$^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at 13 A, 19 A, 30 A, 40 A, and 75 A GeV/c. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how type 1 diabetes mellitus affects adult Bulgarians’ body composition. Materials and methods: One hundred and twenty patients (60 men and 60 women) aged 20 to 40 years, as well as 80 healthy men and women, were enrolled in the study. Bioelectrical impedance indicators: body fat tissue percentage (%BFT), total body water percentage (%TBW), visceral fat tissue (VFT), muscle mass (MM), and bone mass (BM) and derived indicators: total fat mass (TFM), active body mass (ABM), active body mass percentage (%ABM), ABM index (ABMI), and BMI were defined. Results: The mean values of %BFT, VFT, TFM, and BMI were significantly higher in the female patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus while the mean values of %TBW, %ABM, and ABMI were significantly higher in healthy women. The mean values of VFM and ABMI were significantly higher in the male patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus while the mean values of MM and ABM were significantly higher in healthy men. Bioelectrical impedance analysis of the body composition in Bulgarian female patients exhibited an increase in the accumulation of adipose connective tissue both generally and viscerally. The total body water percentage in the female patients was significantly lower than in the healthy controls. The body composition of Bulgarian male patients exhibited an increase in the accumulation of visceral adipose tissue only. The skeletal muscle tissue in male patients exhibited a decrease in comparison to healthy men. Conclusion: We believe that these findings are consequence of the impact of type 1 diabetes mellitus on the body composition in Bulgarian patients.

Abstract

Deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) allows one to probe Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) describing the 3D structure of the nucleon. We report the first measurement of the DVCS beam-spin asymmetry using the CLAS12 spectrometer with a 10.2 and 10.6 GeV electron beam scattering from unpolarised protons. The results greatly extend the $Q^2$ and Bjorken-$x$ phase space beyond the existing data in the valence region and provide over 2000 new data points measured with unprecedented statistical uncertainty, setting new, tight constraints for future phenomenological studies., Comment: Revised Figure 4 and discussion around the number of effective ANNs after Bayesian reweighting

Abstract

This paper presents multiplicity measurements of $K^0_{\textrm{S}}$, $\Lambda$, and $\bar{\Lambda}$ produced in 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon interactions. The measurements were made using data collected at the NA61/SHINE experiment during two different periods. Decays of these neutral hadrons impact the measured $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ multiplicities in the 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon reaction, which are crucial inputs for long-baseline neutrino experiment predictions of neutrino beam flux. The double-differential multiplicities presented here will be used to more precisely measure charged-hadron multiplicities in this reaction, and to re-weight neutral hadron production in neutrino beam Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

A multidimensional extraction of the structure function ratio $\sigma_{LT'}/\sigma_{0}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ reaction above the resonance region has been performed. The study was done based on beam-spin asymmetry measurements using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The measurements focus on the very forward regime ($t/Q^{2}$ $\ll$ 1) with a wide kinematic range of $x_{B}$ in the valence regime (0.17 $<$ $x_{B}$ $<$ 0.55), and virtualities $Q^{2}$ ranging from 1.5 GeV$^{2}$ up to 6 GeV$^{2}$. The results and their comparison to theoretical models based on Generalized Parton Distributions demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd GPDs and the directly related tensor charge of the nucleon. In addition, the data is compared to an extension of a Regge formalism at high photon virtualities. It was found that the Regge model provides a better description at low $Q^{2}$, while the GPD model is more appropriate at high $Q^{2}$., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2007.15677
