Campylobacteriosis is a contagious and zoonotic infection characterized by abortion and infertility in animals. Ovine campylobacteriosis is caused by Campylobacter (C.) fetus subsp. fetus or C. jejuni. As a result of the slow-growing bacterial agents and the high lability of Campylobacter species, laboratory diagnosis of these agents has always been problematic. Several publications on detection of Campylobacter spp. DNA from reference strains or pure culture have been presented. However, studies that have been carried out on field or clinical samples of sheep are quite limited. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the utilization of multiplex-PCR (m-PCR) assay in the diagnosis of ovine campylobacteriosis from abomasal content samples of aborted sheep fetuses. A total of 116 aborted sheep fetuses were tested and C. fetus subsp. fetus was isolated from 8 (6.9%) samples. The m-PCR assay was conducted and amplified C. fetus subsp. fetus-specific DNA in 13 (11.2%) of the abomasum contents. Cohen's kappa coefficient revealed substantial (κ: 0.74) agreement between bacteriological culture and m-PCR methods. The results of this study suggest that the m-PCR assay is more sensitive and reliable than conventional bacteriological culture for detection of Campylobacter species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John's Wort) extract (HPE), powdered H. perforatum (PHP), and selenium (Se) on growth, intestinal flora, and immunity of broiler chicks were investigated. In total, 504 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly allocated into 6 dietary treatments, which were then denoted as negative control (NC) group (basal diet), containing organic Se 0.2% in the starter and grower period as positive control (PC), containing 1% PHP in the starter and grower period, and HPE I, HPE II, and HPE III groups containing respectively, 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 mL / kg HPE in the starter and grower period. The results on performance showed that a significant (P < 0.05) higher body weight of chickens in the HPE III group was observed when compared with that of the NC and PHP groups. Although average daily weight gain and feed intake are significant in the HPE III group, the difference in terms of total feed conversion rate was insignificant (P > 0.05). The liver weights in PC and HPE III were lower compared to HPE I (P < 0.05). The difference in total lactic acid bacteria count (TLABC) between the NC group and all HPE groups was found to be significant (P ˂ 0.05), in addition to TLABC was higher in the HPE III group than other groups (P = 0.001). The highest serum antibody titers to the Newcastle disease vaccine were determined in the HPE III group on the 24th, 35th, and 42nd days of age. IL-1B and IL-6 were found to be insignificant between the groups in chickens (P ˃ 0.05). TNF-α in the HPE III group was greatly increased than the other groups and significant compared to the NC and HPE I groups (P = 0.018). Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) has emerged as important enteric foodborne zoonotic pathogens of considerable public health significance worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of the top seven STEC serotypes and to identify these serotypes in samples of animal source foods and vegetables. A total of 294 samples including 84 meat samples, 135 milk and dairy product samples and 75 green leafy vegetable samples were tested. The samples were harvested in mTSB-broth pre-enriched with novobiocin and then were tested by amplifying 16S shiga toxin ( stx1/2 ), and eae genes using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (m-PCR) assay. A total of 260 (88.4%) samples were positive for E. coli and 29 (11.1%) of them were positive for shiga toxin, and eae genes. The positive samples were cultivated on CHROMAgar STEC and the colonies were evaluated for top seven STEC by m-PCR. The top seven STEC serotypes were detected in 27 (93.1%) of the samples: the STEC O111 serotype in 11 (40.7%) beef samples, STEC O45 in 3 (11.1%) chicken, STEC O145 in 6 (22.2%) parsley, 3 (11.1%) lettuce, 1 (3.7%) spinach, and 1 (3.7%) cheese, and STEC O103 in 2 (7.4%) lettuce samples. None of the samples was found positive for STEC O26, O121, and O157 serotypes. This study set out to examine the effects of fermented distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) partially replaced with soybean meal on growth performance, some blood parameters, meat quality, intestinal microflora, and immune response in broilers. A total of 504 chicks were randomly allocated into 6 groups with 3 replicates. All chicks were fed with one of the following formulated diets i) basal diet based on the maize-soybean meal (C), ii) partially replaced with non-fermented DDGS (NC), iii) partially replaced fermented DDGS with B. subtilis (BS), iv) partially replaced with BS + multienzyme (BSE), v) partially replaced fermented DDGS with S. cerevisiae (SC), vi) partially replaced with SC + multienzyme (SCE). Results showed no significant difference between groups for body weight, daily weight gain (DWG), and feed intake (FI) (P > 0.05). However, feed conversion ratios (FCR) of BS, BSE, and SCE groups were significantly lower than the C and NC groups (P < 0.001). Albumin, total protein, alanine aminotransferase (P < 0.01), Total antioxidant status, aspartate aminotransferase, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and uric acid (P < 0.05) were significantly affected by treatments. The meat color of the SC and SCE groups was darker after 24 h compared to the C group (P < 0.01). The highest LAB counts of ileal and cecum were observed in the BSE and SCE groups (P < 0.001). These results suggest that partial replacement of soybean meal with fermented DDGS had a positive effect on FCR without affecting DWG and FI, and combining fermented DDGS with multienzymes decreased FCR and improved immune and gut health status., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: This study aimed to compare the estimated internal jugular vein (IJV) volume flow with Doppler ultrasound in patients with slow flow in the transverse sinuses and normal transverse sinuses on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)., Methods: Eighty patients between the ages of 18 and 80 years who did not have any signs of sinus vein thrombosis on brain MRI were included. On MRI, cases with hyperintensity due to a signal void loss in the transverse sinuses in coronal fluid attenuation inversion recovery sequences were included in the slow-flow group. The presence of sinus thrombosis was excluded with other MRI pulse sequences and clinical findings. The participants were divided into 2 groups as having normal and slow flow according to MRI findings. Then bilateral IJV volume flow measurements were made by Doppler ultrasound. Bilateral volume flow was estimated by time-averaged blood flow velocities sampled in the center of the IJV, and IJV cross-sectional areas were measured. We defined the dominant IJV as the one having the higher estimated volume flow of the 2 sides., Results: Total estimated IJV blood flow was lower (P < .001) in patients with slow flow on MRI (546 mL/min) compared to those without (768 mL/min). A similar finding was seen for the nondominant IJV. In a receiver operating characteristic analysis, the cutoff value for the total estimated IJV volume flow was determined to be 590 mL/min, and the cutoff value for nondominant estimated IJV volume flow was determined to be 202 mL/min to distinguish between the groups., Conclusions: Low estimated volume blood flow in the IJV is associated with MRI evidence of stasis in the ipsilateral transverse sinus., (© 2020 American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.)

Objectives: Low levels of vitamin D are known to increase cardiovascular mortality due to different risks. We aimed to examine whether low vitamin D levels in children and adolescents cause ventricular repolarization changes., Methods: Sixtyseven healthy cases aged between 3.5 and 17 years were included. According to levels of vitamin D, cases were grouped as sufficient (n=44), insufficient (n=13) and deficiency (n=10). Ventricular repolarization parameters were measured manually., Results: Levels of vitamin D were different for cases with insufficiency and deficiency compared to sufficiency ones (102±54.9 vs 24.4±7 ng/ml, p<0.001 and 102±54.9 vs 16.6±8.3 ng/ml, respectively, p<0.001). In the insufficient group the following parameters were different from sufficient group: QTmean (357.8±25.3 vs 332±29.9 ms, p=0.012), JTc (310.8±20.2 vs 331.6±21 ms, p=0.005) and Tpe/QT (0.2±0.02 vs 0.22±0.02, p=0.02). It was found that the level of serum vitamin D correlated with JTc (r=-0.37, p=0.002), Tp-e (r=-0.29, p=0.015) and Tp-e/QT (r=-0.24, p=0.047). In the linear regression analysis, it was found that dropping level of vitamin D below normal was an independent risk factor for prolonged duration of JTc (p=0.015)., Conclusions: Decline in vitamin D levels causes ventricular repolarization anomaly. As the decrease in vitamin D levels deepens, repolarization times become longer. These results could indicate that decrease in vitamin D levels can increase sensitivity to ventricular arrhythmias (Tab. 3, Ref. 45). Human and bovine group B streptococcus (GBS) isolates were serotyped and amounts of released N-acetylneuraminic acid from N-acetylneuraminyl-lactose by extracellular neuraminidase were colorimetrically assessed. According to serotyping by co-agglutination method, 30 of bovine GBS and 43 of human GBS could be serotyped (ST) by monospecific antisera coated with protein A. The remaining GBS strains were designated as nontypeable (NT). The released N-acetylneuraminic acid was determined in 90.9% of bovine GBS and 47.1% of human GBS isolates. The differences between the total bovine and human GBS isolates were statistically significant (p < 0.001). In comparison with detected N-acetylneuraminic acid level in bovine and human groups, significant decrease was observed in the bovine NT group according to increased human NT (p < 0.01) and bovine ST groups (p < 0.01). However, N-acetylneuraminic acid level in bovine ST and bovine total groups significantly (p < 0.001) increased with respect to the human ST group and human total group. The Van cat is a domestic landrace found in the Van province of eastern Turkey. In this study, we aimed to determine the seasonal carriage of dermatophytes in Van cats without clinical lesions. A total of 264 hair specimens were collected from clinically healthy cats in and around the Van Province. Of these samples, 30.3% were obtained in spring, 30.6% in summer, 16.6% in autumn, and 22.3% in winter; 45.1% of samples were from male cats and the rest from female ones. Of the studied cats, 118 were younger than 1 year, 78 were 1-3 years old, and 68 were older than 3 years. The specimens were subjected to direct microscopic examination with 15% potassium hydroxide and cultured on Sabouraud dextrose agar and dermatophyte test medium supplemented with cycloheximide and chloramphenicol. Dermatophyte identification was carried out based on macroscopic and microscopic colony morphology, urease activities, in vitro hair perforation test, growth at 37°C, and pigmentation on corn meal agar. Dermatophytes were isolated from 19 (7.1%) of the 264 specimens examined. The most frequently isolated fungi were Trichophyton terrestre (4.1%), followed by Microsporum gypseum (1.1%), M. nanum (1.1%), and T. mentagrophytes (0.7%), and these fungi may represent a health risk for humans in contact with clinically healthy Van cats. M. canis was not isolated from any of the specimens. Our results show no significant (p>0.05) association between carriage of dermatophytes and the gender of cats.
