The pretreatment process of various foods has been reported to improve their nutritional properties. The soaking of brown rice improves the texture and nutrients, which are crucial for cooking and maintaining its high functional value. Illite, a clay mineral, has recently been discovered to improve the nutritional value of seeds. Based on these findings, we soaked brown rice with different concentrations of illite solution for different durations and allowed the germination to perform analyses. Soaking the brown rice for 6 h with a germination period of 48 h was determined to be the optimal condition because of its higher sprout length. In addition, this optimal condition had improved textural characteristics such as reduced hardness, gumminess, chewiness, and cohesiveness, and it also had increased adhesiveness and stabilized resilience and springiness. The treatment solutions were free from heavy metal contaminants, whereas the mineral contents such as K, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Na were significantly increased with the increase in illite concentration. Moreover, our results showed that illite treatment could preserve the color appearance and seed germination. The ratio of essential amino acids to non-essential amino acids and antioxidants (phenolic contentγ-oryzanol, and flavonoid) of germinated brown rice was considerably increased with illite treatment. In germinated brown rice, an increase in DPPH and superoxide dismutase levels, a slight decrease in flavonoids, and no difference in polyphenol content were observed. These findings suggest that pre-soaking brown rice seeds with the appropriate concentration of illite could enhance their nutritional properties, which might attract consumers' interest to include this in their daily diet.

Highlights Flash-induced porous graphene (FPG) was synthesized via a broad-spectrum flash lamp that induced synergistic photo-effects between ultraviolet and visible-near-infrared wavelengths, resulting in large-area synthesis in just a few milliseconds. A hollow pillar graphene with low sheet resistance of 18 Ω sq−1 was produced, exhibiting low density (0.0354 g cm−3) and outstanding absolute electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of 1.12 × 105 dB cm2 g−1. A lightweight, flexible, and high-throughput FPG is applied for electromagnetic interference shielding of a drone radar system and the human body.

Abstract Biological systems are composed of hierarchical structures made of a large number of proteins. These structures are highly sophisticated and challenging to replicate using artificial synthesis methods. To exploit these structures in materials science, biotemplating is used to achieve biocomposites that accurately mimic biological structures and impart functionality of inorganic materials, including electrical conductivity. However, the biological scaffolds used in previous studies are limited to stereotypical and simple morphologies with little synthetic diversity because of a lack of control over their morphologies. This study proposes that the specific protein assemblies within the cell‐derived extracellular matrix (ECM), whose morphological features are widely tailorable, can be employed as versatile biotemplates. In a typical procedure, a fibrillar assembly of fibronectin—a constituent protein of the ECM—is metalized through an antibody‐guided biotemplating approach. Specifically, the antibody‐bearing nanogold is attached to the fibronectin through antibody–antigen interactions, and then metals are grown on the nanogold acting as a seed. The biomimetic structure can be adapted for hydrogen production and sensing after improving its electrical conductivity through thermal sintering or additional metal growth. This study demonstrates that cell‐derived ECM can be an attractive option for addressing the diversity limitation of a conventional biotemplate.

Abstract The lithium metal battery (LMB) is a promising energy storage platform with a distinctively high energy density in theory, outperforming even those of conventional Li‐ion batteries. In practice, however, the actual achievable energy density of LMBs is significantly limited due to the Li metal anode (LMA) being too thick (50–250 μm), and there are difficulties with expanding the highly reactive Li metal into large‐format cells due to safety concerns. Therefore, the recent focus of LMB research is headed toward the development of a thin and stable LMA. However, as the thickness of Li anode decreases (≤20 μm) and the absolute size of the battery cell increases, interfacial reactions on the Li surface become more active, potentially leading to fatal thermal runaway. In this regard, there is still much demand for the development of novel manufacturing technologies to overcome this issue and produce thin and stable Li metal. Considering these things, in this review, we initially examine the fundamentals regarding the deployment of LMAs using a number of essential metrics. Then, we introduce recent strategies employed for designing thin and stable Li anodes including host matrix architecturing, interface stabilization, and other advanced modifications. Finally, we propose future directions for the realization of practical LMBs and their potential applications in various battery systems, encompassing Na, K, and Zn‐based batteries. We anticipate that ultra‐thin and ultra‐stable metal anodes would find widespread utilization in secondary battery applications with high‐power requirements.

Abstract Background Monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) and microglia elicit neural inflammation and clear debris for subsequent tissue repair and remodeling. The role of infiltrating MDMs in the injured brain, however, has been controversial due to overlapping antigen expression with microglia. In this study, we define the origin and function of MDMs in cerebral ischemia. Methods Using adoptive transfer of GFP+ splenocytes into adult asplenic mice subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, we compared the role of CD11b + /CD45+/NK1.1 − /Ly6G − MDMs and microglia in the ischemic brain. The phagocytic activities of MDMs and microglia were measured by the uptake of fluorescent beads both in vivo with mice infused with GFP+ splenocytes and ex vivo with cultures of isolated brain immune cells. Results Stroke induced an infiltration of MDMs [GFP+] into the ipsilateral hemisphere at acute (3 days) and sub-acute phases (7 days) of post-stroke. At 7 days, the infiltrating MDMs contained both CD45High and CD45Low subsets. The CD45High MDMs in the injured hemisphere exhibited a significantly higher proliferation capacity (Ki-67 expression levels) as well as higher expression levels of CD11c when compared to CD45Low MDMs. The CD45High and CD45Low MDM subsets in the injured hemisphere were approximately equal populations, indicating that CD45High MDMs infiltrating the ischemic brain changes their phenotype to CD45Low microglia-like phenotype. Studies with fluorescent beads reveal high levels of MDM phagocytic activity in the post-stroke brain, but this phagocytic activity was exclusive to post-ischemic brain tissue and was not detected in circulating monocytes. By contrast, CD45Low microglia-like cells had low levels of phagocytic activity when compared to CD45High cells. Both in vivo and ex vivo studies also show that the phagocytic activity in CD45High MDMs is associated with an increase in the CD45Low/CD45High ratio, indicating that phagocytosis promotes MDM phenotype conversion. Conclusions This study demonstrates that MDMs are the predominant phagocytes in the post-ischemic brain, with the CD45High subset having the highest phagocytic activity levels. Upon phagocytosis, CD45High MDMs in the post-ischemic brain adopt a CD45Low phenotype that is microglia-like. Together, these studies reveal key roles for MDMs and their phagocytic function in tissue repair and remodeling following cerebral ischemia.

Abeliophyllum distichum Nakai, an ornamental plant, contains a wide range of phytochemicals having pharmaceutical properties. The use of different plant-based extracts for the enhancement of yield and/or quality of soybean sprouts, one of the most inexpensive but nutritious food products, is common. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of A. distichum flower extract (ADE) on the yield and nutritional value of soybean sprouts. Soybean seeds were soaked in ADE solutions with concentrations ( w/v ) of 0.5% (ADE-0.5), 1% (ADE-1), 3% (ADE-3), and 5% (ADE-5). The effect of ADE concentration on the yield and different nutrient components varied. The highest soybean sprout yield and vitamin C content were found with ADE-3. The most abundant essential amino acid content was detected in ADE-1, whereas the greatest amounts of total isoflavones and total minerals were determined in ADE-5 and the ADE-untreated control, respectively. Overall results of yield, color, and contents of vitamin C, amino acids, and isoflavones suggest that 1% or 3% of A. distichum extract could be an optimum concentration to soak the soybean seeds for higher sprout yield and nutrient content.

Abstract To realize the development of high‐performance electrodes materials, real‐time observation tool that can visualize dynamical changes of electrode materials upon lithiation and sodiation is highly critical. Recently, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has gained much attraction as it provides rich information on both phase and morphological transitions of electrode materials upon lithiation and sodiation in an atomic scale. Nevertheless, two significant limitations are present for current in situ TEM study: i) most of the in situ TEM experiments use a specially designed TEM holder, which is costly and suitable for use in only selective types of TEM; and ii) recently developed in situ TEM techniques with no applied bias have inherent limitations in the size of the sample (difficult for a size above 50 nm). Overcoming these two aforementioned issues, bias‐free graphene solid cells (GSCs) are now introduced, which can conduct real‐time observation of electrode materials in any size dimensions and morphologies without using bias. In this work, dynamical changes of hollow SnO2 nanotubes (NTs) are visualized upon lithiation and sodiation in real time using GSCs, where rich information is obtained on the morphology‐dependent, ion‐dependent characteristics of dynamical changes.

Drought is a serious threat worldwide to soybean and maize production. This study was conducted to discern the impact of salvianolic acid treatment on osmotic-stressed soybean (Glycine max L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings from the perspective of physiochemical and molecular reactions. Examination of varied salvianolic acid concentrations (0, 0.1, 1, 5, 10, and 25 μM) on soybean and maize seedling growth confirmed that the 0.1 and 1 μM concentrations, respectively, showed an improvement in agronomic traits. Likewise, the investigation ascertained how salvianolic acid application could retrieve osmotic-stressed plants. Soybean and maize seedlings were irrigated with water or 25% PEG for 8 days. The results indicated that salvianolic acid application promoted the survival of the 39-day-old osmotic-stressed soybean and maize plants. The salvianolic acid-treated plants retained high photosynthetic pigments, protein, amino acid, fatty acid, sugar, and antioxidant contents, and demonstrated low hydrogen peroxide and lipid contents under osmotic stress conditions. Gene transcription pattern certified that salvianolic acid application led to an increased expression of GmGOGAT, GmUBC2, ZmpsbA, ZmNAGK, ZmVPP1, and ZmSCE1d genes, and a diminished expression of GmMIPS2, GmSOG1, GmACS, GmCKX, ZmPIS, and ZmNAC48 genes. Together, our results indicate the utility of salvianolic acid to enhance the osmotic endurance of soybean and maize plants.

Abstract Flexible and mechanically robust gas sensors are the key technologies for wearable and implantable electronics. Herein, the authors demonstrate the high‐performance, flexible nitrogen dioxide (NO2) chemiresistors using a series of n‐type conjugated polymers (CPs: PNDIT2/IM‐x) and a polymer dopant (poly(ethyleneimine), PEI). Imine double bonds (C = N) are incorporated into the backbones of the CPs with different imine contents (x) to facilitate strong and selective interactions with NO2. The PEI provides doping stability, enhanced electrical conductivity, and flexibility. As a result, the NO2 sensors with PNDIT2/IM‐0.1 and PEI (1:1 by weight ratio) exhibit outstanding sensing performances, such as excellent sensitivity (ΔR/Rb = 240% @ 1 ppm), ultralow detection limit (0.1 ppm), high selectivity (ΔR/Rb

The yield of soybeans, an economically important crop worldwide, is substantially reduced by different abiotic and biotic factors, including insect pests. Different insecticides are applied to control soybean insect pests. The application of insecticides may also affect the plants along with the pests. The effects of four insecticides (fenitrothion, etofenprox, thiamethoxam, and lambda-cyhalothrin-cum-thiamethoxam; LT) on the growth and yield of two soybean cultivars over two years were investigated. The plant height (PH), pod number, shoot dry matter without seed (SDWS), total shoot dry matter, seed yield per plant (SYP), harvest index (HI), and hundred-seed weight significantly varied with the insecticides. However, the primary branch number was not significantly affected by the insecticides. Significant interactions between the year and insecticide, except for the SDWS and HI, indicated that the growing environment also affected the influence of the insecticides. The PH was significantly tall in the thiamethoxam (50.07 cm) and short for the LT (46.66 cm) application. The SYP was significantly high for the LT (20.51 g) and low for the fenitrothion (11.51 g). This study showed that the type of insecticide could significantly affect the plant growth and yield of the soybean.

Soybean, one of the major food and fodder crops, yield is significantly reduced by different abiotic and biotic stresses, and salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses. The research objective of this study was to investigate the effect of foliar application of potassium chloride and potassium sulfate fertilizers at the early growth stage of soybean under medium (6 dS/m) and high (12 dS/m) salinity stresses. The effect of fertilizer application was measured on the bases of plant growth, levels of antioxidant activities, total polyphenol, flavonoid, chlorophyll, and carotenoid contents. Potassium sulfate showed better positive effect on the antioxidant activities, polyphenol, flavonoid, carotenoid, and chlorophyll contents compared to those of potassium chloride although the contribution was not noteworthy in comparison to the fertilizer unsprayed plants. The results of this study implied that foliar applications of 2.5% potassium fertilizers could not help reduce the negative effect of salinity stress at the early stage of soybean growth. This study suggests further researches using different concentrations of fertilizers at different plant growth and development stages.

Peanut shell; a byproduct of an important leguminous crop, peanut; is a potential source of different functional compounds. Antioxidant activities, secondary metabolites and amino acid contents in peanut shells of six Korean cultivars were studied in the present study. Peanut shells showed remarkable antioxidant potentials with high amounts of total polyphenol (428.1–739.8 µg gallic acid equivalents/g), flavonoid (142.6–568.0 µg quercetin equivalents/g), and amino acid (5.76–34.56 mg/g) contents. 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, and reducing power potential of the peanut shells were considerable. The results suggest that the shells of Korean peanut cultivars could be a potential source of natural antioxidants and functional compounds for various industrial uses including cosmetics. Lemon (Citrus limon Burm. f.) is one of the most widely produced and consumed fruits in the world. The seeds of lemon are generally discarded as waste. The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics and antioxidant potential of lemon seed oil obtained by four extraction methods (roasted-pressing at 170°C, RP-170; roasted-pressing at 100°C, RP-100; cold-pressing, CP; and supercritical fluid, SF). No significant differences in the viscosity, density, and refractive index were observed in the oil obtained from different methods. In the case of Hunter's value, L (lightness) and b (yellowness) values of SF were higher than those of the others. The oil obtained by the CP method exhibited higher levels of Ca (252.17 mg/kg), Cu (2.38 mg/kg), K (225.98 mg/kg), and Mo (0.47 mg/kg) than that of other methods. The highest contents of total phenols (165.90 mg/mL) and flavonoids (21.69 mg/mL) were significantly high in oil obtained by the SF method. Oleic and linoleic acids consisted of principal fatty acids, which were significantly higher in oil obtained by RP-170. Higher amounts of volatile flavor compounds, such as γ-terpinene, sabinene, and limonene, were observed in CP compared to those observed for the other methods. This study elucidates the effects of different methods of oil extraction on the composition of lemon seed oil and highlights potential applications of these benefits in the food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and/or fragrance industries.

This study examined the efficiency of fungal strain (Cunninghamella bertholletiae) isolated from the rhizosphere of Solanum lycopersicum to reduce symptoms of salinity, drought and heavy metal stresses in tomato plants. In vitro evaluation of C. bertholletiae demonstrated its ability to produce indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA), ammonia and tolerate varied abiotic stresses on solid media. Tomato plants at 33 days’ old, inoculated with or without C. bertholletiae, were treated with 1.5% sodium chloride, 25% polyethylene glycol, 3 mM cadmium and 3 mM lead for 10 days, and the impact of C. bertholletiae on plant performance was investigated. Inoculation with C. bertholletiae enhanced plant biomass and growth attributes in stressed plants. In addition, C. bertholletiae modulated the physiochemical apparatus of stressed plants by raising chlorophyll, carotenoid, glucose, fructose, and sucrose contents, and reducing hydrogen peroxide, protein, lipid metabolism, amino acid, antioxidant activities, and abscisic acid. Gene expression analysis showed enhanced expression of SlCDF3 and SlICS genes and reduced expression of SlACCase, SlAOS, SlGRAS6, SlRBOHD, SlRING1, SlTAF1, and SlZH13 genes following C. bertholletiae application. In conclusion, our study supports the potential of C. bertholletiae as a biofertilizer to reduce plant damage, improve crop endurance and remediation under stress conditions.

Abstract It has been reported that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play important roles in non-infectious diseases. In ischemic stroke, neutrophils infiltrate damaged brain tissue soon after injury and aggravate inflammation. Using a rat permanent MCAO model, we showed citrullinated histone H3+ (CitH3, a marker of NETosis) induction in neutrophils in leptomeninges and in peripheral blood soon after MCAO. Entry of CitH3+ cells occurred through leptomeninges after 6 h of MCAO and these cells were observed in cerebral cortex from 12 h and subsequently in striatum. It is interesting to note that CitH3+ induction began in circulating neutrophils before they migrated to brain parenchyma and they were detected as intact or lysed form. High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), a danger associated molecular pattern (DAMP) molecule, was accumulated massively in serum after permanent MCAO and plays a critical role in CitH3 inductions in neutrophils in brain parenchyma and in peripheral blood. Both the all-thiol and disulfide types of HMGB1 induced CitH3 via their specific receptors, CXCR4 and TLR4, respectively. Importantly, HMGB1 not only induced NETosis but was included as a part of the extruded NETs, and contribute to NETosis-mediated neuronal death. Therefore, it would appear a vicious cycle exists between neuronal cell death and NETosis and HMGB1 mediates detrimental effects exerted by this cycle. When NETosis was suppressed by a PAD inhibitor in MCAO animals, delayed immune cell infiltrations were markedly suppressed and damages in blood vessels were significantly mitigated. The study shows NETosis with the involvement of HMGB1 as a mediator in a vicious cycle aggravates inflammation and subsequent damage in the ischemic brain.

Gastrodin (GAS) is a predominant bioactive constituent of the Chinese herbal medicine Tianma (Gastrodia elata Blume). Many authors have reported GAS has the beneficial effect on diverse diseases of the CNS, including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and cerebral ischemia. Here, we report GAS exhibited a robust neuroprotective effect in an Sprague-Dawley rat model of stroke (transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, tMCAO), and show that the underlying molecular mechanism involves its protective effect against Zn2+-toxicity and its anti-oxidative effects in astrocytes. Intraperitoneal administration of GAS (40 mg/kg) after MCAO reduced mean infarct volume to 30.1 ± 5.9% of that of MCAO controls and this neuroprotective effect was accompanied by neurological function recoveries which was measured using modified neurological severity score (mNSS). Interestingly, GAS induced up-regulation and nuclear translocation of Nrf2, and subsequently increased the expressions of anti-oxidative genes, such as, HO-1 and GCLM, in astrocytes. Furthermore, GAS co- or pre-treatment markedly suppressed Zn2+-induced cell death caused by excessive ROS production and PARP-1 induction. We found that GAS suppressed p67 expression and PAR formation in astrocytes, which might underlie the anti- Zn2+-toxicity and anti-oxidative effects of GAS in astrocytes. These findings indicate GAS protects astrocytes from Zn2+-induced toxicity and oxidative stress and these effects contribute to its neuroprotective effects in the postischemic brain.

Many industrialized areas of the world demand for the nutraceuticals due to rapidly growing health risks linked with higher consumption of processed foods. Tateishi Kazu vegetable soup or miracle soup is widely consumed around the world because of its nutraceutical properties. In the current research, the Tateishi Kazu vegetable soup was made from both organic and nonorganic sources, such as carrot, burdock root, shiitake mushroom, daikon radish, and radish leaves. We analyzed colour, antioxidant properties, cell viability, and mineral and free amino acid contents of both soups. The L∗a∗b and pH values revealed no drastic changes in the colour of the organic soup stored for 96 hours. The essential amino acids were present in higher amounts in an organic soup compared to the nonorganic soup. Similarly, the total mineral contents of the organic soup were higher than the nonorganic soup; however, potassium was the major mineral in both soups. Higher phenolic contents with elevated 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were noticed in organic soup. Moreover, both soups showed considerable reduction in cell viability of HepG2 cells tested through the MTT assay. From the present study, we concluded that the organic Tateishi Kazu vegetable soup can be of great importance to food industry due to the presence of viable nutrients and pharmacological properties.

Soybean sprouts, a nutritional food product, can contribute to food security because they can be grown within a week and do not require sophisticated technology. The yield and quality of soybean sprouts are influenced by various factors, including seed priming and growing conditions. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of seed soaking in different concentrations of illite, a clay mineral, on the yield and quality of soybean sprouts. Soybean seeds soaked in five concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 10%, w/v) of illite or tap water for 8 h were named IP-0.5, IP-1, IP3, IP-5, IP-10, and control, respectively. The highest sprout yield was found in IP-3, followed by IP-1, and IP-5, which had 11.1%, 8.8%, and 7.4% increments, respectively, compared to the control. The content of vitamin C, mineral element, isoflavone, total polyphenol, and total flavonoid was higher in many of the illite-treated soybean sprouts than in the control. The overall results indicated that pre-soaking soybean seeds in lower concentrations (0.5−3%, w/v) of illite could be helpful to enhance the yield and nutritional value of soybean sprouts in an easy and inexpensive way.

Summary: The astrocytic response to injury is characterized on the cellular level, but our understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling the cellular processes is incomplete. The astrocytic response to injury is similar to wound-healing responses in non-neural tissues that involve epithelial-to-mesenchymal transitions (EMTs) and upregulation in ZEB transcription factors. Here we show that injury-induced astrogliosis increases EMT-related genes expression, including Zeb2, and long non-coding RNAs, including Zeb2os, which facilitates ZEB2 protein translation. In mouse models of either contusive spinal cord injury or transient ischemic stroke, the conditional knockout of Zeb2 in astrocytes attenuates astrogliosis, generates larger lesions, and delays the recovery of motor function. These findings reveal ZEB2 as an important regulator of the astrocytic response to injury and suggest that astrogliosis is an EMT-like process, which provides a conceptual connection for the molecular and cellular similarities between astrogliosis and wound-healing responses in non-neural tissue.

Abstract Graphene oxide (GO) doping and reduction allow for physicochemical property modification to suit practical application needs. Herein, the challenge of simultaneous low‐thermal‐budget heteroatom doping of GO and its reduction in ambient air is addressed through the synthesis of B‐doped reduced GO (B@rGO) by flash irradiation of boric acid loaded onto a GO support with intense pulsed light (IPL). The effects of light power and number of shots on the in‐depth sequential doping and reduction mechanisms are investigated by ex situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and direct millisecond‐scale temperature measurements (temperature >1600 °C, < 10‐millisecond duration, ramping rate of 5.3 × 105 °C s−1). Single‐flash IPL allows the large‐scale synthesis of substantially doped B@rGO (≈3.60 at% B) to be realized with a thermal budget 106‐fold lower than that of conventional thermal methods, and the prepared material with abundant B active sites is employed for highly sensitive and selective room‐temperature NO2 sensing. Thus, this work showcases the great potential of optical annealing for millisecond‐scale ultrafast reduction and heteroatom doping of GO in ambient air, which allows the tuning of multiple physicochemical GO properties.

Pu-erh, a type of post-fermented dark tea, has attracted much attention of food scientists because of its health-promoting effects. pH, titratable acidity, color value, antioxidant potential and free amino acid contents of cultivated Pu-erh and Gushu Pu-erh teas extracted at 90 and 100°C were compared in this study. The pH of Gushu Pu-erh tea extract was slightly acidic than cultivated Pu-erh. Gushu Pu-erh contained higher antioxidant potentials and free amino acid content at the both extraction temperatures than the cultivated Pu-erh. The antioxidant potentials and free amino acid content were high in the tea extracted at 100°C. The results of this study showed that Gushu Pu-erh tea extracted at 100°C for 3 min with 30 s of shaking yields high amounts of phenolics and free amino acids.

Abstract Conductive porous materials having a high surface reactivity offer great promise for a broad range of applications. However, a general and scalable synthesis of such materials remains challenging. In this work, the facile synthesis of catalytic metal nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in 2D metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is reported as highly active and conductive porous materials. After the assembly of 2D conductive MOFs (C‐MOFs), i.e., Cu3(hexahydroxytriphenylene)2 [Cu3(HHTP)2], Pd or Pt NPs are functionalized within the cavities of C‐MOFs by infiltration of metal ions and subsequent reduction. The unique structure of Cu3(HHTP)2 with a cavity size of 2 nm confines the bulk growth of metal NPs, resulting in ultra‐small (≈2 nm) and well‐dispersed metal NPs loaded in 2D C‐MOFs. The Pd or Pt NPs‐loaded Cu3(HHTP)2 exhibits remarkably improved NO2 sensing performance at room temperature due to the high reactivity of catalytic metal NPs and the high porosity of C‐MOFs. The catalytic effect of Pd and Pt NPs on NO2 sensing of Cu3(HHTP)2, in terms of reaction rate kinetics and activation energy, is demonstrated.

The present investigation aims to perceive the effect of exogenous ampelopsin treatment on salinity and heavy metal damaged soybean seedlings (Glycine max L.) in terms of physiochemical and molecular responses. Screening of numerous ampelopsin concentrations (0, 0.1, 1, 5, 10 and 25 μM) on soybean seedling growth indicated that the 1 μM concentration displayed an increase in agronomic traits. The study also determined how ampelopsin application could recover salinity and heavy metal damaged plants. Soybean seedlings were irrigated with water, 1.5% NaCl or 3 mM chosen heavy metals for 12 days. Our results showed that the application of ampelopsin raised survival of the 45-day old salinity and heavy metal stressed soybean plants. The ampelopsin treated plants sustained high chlorophyll, protein, amino acid, fatty acid, salicylic acid, sugar, antioxidant activities and proline contents, and displayed low hydrogen peroxide, lipid metabolism, and abscisic acid contents under unfavorable status. A gene expression survey revealed that ampelopsin application led to the improved expression of GmNAC109, GmFDL19, GmFAD3, GmAPX, GmWRKY12, GmWRKY142, and GmSAP16 genes, and reduced the expression of the GmERF75 gene. This study suggests irrigation with ampelopsin can alleviate plant damage and improve plant yield under stress conditions, especially those including salinity and heavy metals.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been increasingly studied due to sodium (Na) being an inexpensive ionic resource (Na) and their battery chemistry being similar to that of current lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, SIBs have faced substantial challenges in developing high-performance anode materials that can reversibly store Na+ in the host structure. To address these challenges, molybdenum sulfide (MoS2)-based active materials have been considered as promising anodes, owing to the two-dimensional layered structure of MoS2 for stably (de)inserting Na+. Nevertheless, intrinsic issues of MoS2—such as low electronic conductivity and the loss of active S elements after a conversion reaction—have limited the viability of MoS2 in practical SIBs. Here, we report MoS2 embedded in carbon nanofibers encapsulated with a reduced graphene oxide (MoS2@CNFs@rGO) composite for SIB anodes. The MoS2@CNFs@rGO delivered a high capacity of 345.8 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 for 90 cycles. The CNFs and rGO were synergistically taken into account for providing rapid pathways for electrons and preventing the dissolution of S sources during repetitive conversion reactions. This work offers a new point of view to realize MoS2-based anode materials in practical SIBs.

Sparkling wine has widely been consumed because of its high added value. Sparkling wine is mainly produced using grape, however different fruits have been studied to ferment the wine. The objective of this study was to determine the quality characteristics and antioxidant potential of sparkling wine produced by using ripe persimmon with three strains of Saccharomyces, that is, S. bayanus, S. carlsbergensis, and S. cerevisiae. Persimmon sparkling wine samples were prepared by fermenting different amounts of persimmon fruit and water. Alcohol content was significantly varied in base wine with different proportion of persimmon fruit and water. Antioxidant potential in term of DPPH radical scavenging potential of the base wine prepared with 4:1 ratio of persimmon and water was significantly high. However, the tannin content of the wine samples was not significantly affected. Sensory characteristics in term of full-body was also significantly high for the wine prepared with 4:1 ratio of persimmon and water. Inoculation method also affected the ethanol content of persimmon sparkling wine. Results of this experiment showed that good quality persimmon sparkling wine could be prepared by fermenting 4:1 ratio of ripe persimmon and water during first fermentation.

Osteopontin (OPN), a phosphorylated glycoprotein, is induced in response to tissue damage and inflammation in various organs, including the brain. In our previous studies, we reported the robust neuroprotective effects of the icosamer OPN peptide OPNpt20, containing arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) and serine-leucine-alanine-tyrosine (SLAY) motifs, in an animal model of transient focal ischemia and demonstrated that its anti-inflammatory, pro-angiogenic, and phagocytosis inducing functions are responsible for the neuroprotective effects. In the present study, we truncated OPNpt20 to 13 or 7 amino acid peptides containing RGD (R) and/or SLAY (S) motifs (OPNpt13RS, OPNpt7R, OPNpt7RS, and OPNpt7S), and their neuroprotective efficacy was examined in a rat middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. Intranasal administration of all four peptides significantly reduced infarct volume; OPNpt7R (VPNGRGD), the 7-amino-acid peptide containing an RGD motif, was determined to be the most potent, with efficacy comparable to that of OPNpt20. Additionally, sensory–motor functional deficits of OPNpt7R-administered MCAO animals were significantly improved, as indicated by the modified neurological severity scores and rotarod test. Notably, the expression of M1 markers was suppressed, whereas that of M2 markers (Arginase 1, CD206, and VEGF) was significantly enhanced in OPNpt7R-treated primary microglia cultures. Inflammation resolution by OPNpt7R was further confirmed in MCAO animals, in which upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (Arg1, IL-10, IL-4, and CD36) and enhanced efferocytosis were detected. Moreover, studies using three mutant peptides (OPNpt7R-RAA or OPNpt7R-RAD, where RGD was replaced with RAA or RAD, respectively, and OPNpt7R-sc containing scrambled sequences) revealed that the RGD motif plays a vital role in conferring neuroprotection. In conclusion, the RGD-containing OPN heptamer OPNpt7R exhibits neuroprotective effects in the post-ischemic brain by suppressing M1 markers and augmenting M2 polarization of microglia and the RGD motif plays a critical role in these activities.

Soybean sprouts have been established as an important year-round vegetable in Korea, China, and Japan for a long time. Very few studies on quality of soybean sprouts during storage have been reported so far although considerably large number of reports have been available for production techniques. Since persimmon fruit powder is reported to have positive influence on yield and nutritional value of soybean sprouts, the objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of persimmon fruit powder on quality of soybean sprouts during storage at room temperature (20±1°C) and at low temperature (4±1°C). Bacterial count was low in treated soybean sprouts as compared to that of untreated control. Vitamin C content was high in treated soybean sprouts but the rate of its depletion was high in untreated control sample. Chlorophyll content was not affected during storage at room temperature. Storage caused decrease in hardness of soybean sprouts and the rate of decrement in hardness was higher at untreated control than in treated samples. This study showed that soybean seeds soaking in water containing persimmon fruit powder could help reduce bacterial infection, resist in depleting vitamin C content, and maintain the texture of soybean sprouts during storage.

Soybean sprouts are one of the most inexpensive and nutritious food items that can be easily grown year-round. Several studies have been conducted to increase their yield and nutritional values. This study was carried out to examine the effects of Pu-erh tea extracts on the production and nutrients content of soybean sprouts. Soybean seeds were soaked in 1%, 2%, or 3% (w/v) tea extracts, or tap water, before keeping for sprout cultivation; the sprout samples were named PE-1, PE-2, PE-3, and the control, respectively. The sprout yields were increased by up to 17% in PE-2 and PE-3 than in the control. The vitamin C, total free amino acid, total mineral, total isoflavone, total polyphenol, and flavonoid contents as well as the antioxidant potentials of the tea extract-treated sprouts were higher than those of the control. The results indicated that pre-soaking soybean seeds in 2% Pu-erh tea extracts could offer an easy, inexpensive, and efficient way to improve the yield and nutritional value of soybean sprouts.

4-Hydroxybenzyl alcohol (4-HBA) is an important phenolic constituent of Gastrodia elata Blume (GEB), a traditional herbal medicine used in East Asia. Many activities have been reported to underlie the beneficial effects of 4-HBA in the brain, and in particular, its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and anti-zinc-toxic effects have been implicated in the postischemic brain. Here, the authors investigated the anti-oxidative effect of 4-HBA on astrocytes and sought to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms involved. 4-HBA dose-dependently suppressed H2O2-induced astrocyte cell death. More specifically, pre-incubation of C6 cells (an astrocyte cell line) with 100 μM 4-HBA for 6 hrs increased survival when cells were treated with H2O2 (100 μM, 1 hr) from 54.2±0.7% to 85.9±1.5%. In addition, 4-HBA was found to up-regulate and activate Nrf2, and subsequently, to induce the expressions of several anti-oxidative genes, such as, HO-1, NQO1, and GCLM. Notably, HO-1 was induced by 3.4-fold in 4-HBA-treated C6 cells, and siRNA-mediated HO-1 knockdown demonstrated that Nrf2 activation and HO-1 induction were responsible for the observed cytoprotective effect of 4-HBA. ERK and Akt signaling pathways were activated by 4-HBA in C6 cells, suggesting their involvements in protective effect of 4-HBA. In addition, 4-HBA-conditioned astrocyte culture medium was found to have neuroprotective effects on primary neuronal cultures or fresh C6 cells exposed to oxidative stress, and these effects seemed to be mediated by glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which both accumulated in 4-HBA-treated astrocyte culture media. Thus, the 4-HBA-mediated activation of Nrf2 and induction of HO-1 in astrocytes were found to act via autocrine and paracrine mechanisms to confer protective effects. Furthermore, given the pleiotropic effects of 4-HBA with respect to its targeting of various brain cell types and functions, it would appear that 4-HBA has therapeutic potential for the prevention and amelioration of various brain diseases.

In this work, 750 nm-thick BaTiO3 thin films with highly (0 0 1) preferred orientation were grown on single crystal MgO substrates by RF-sputtering. Hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resist material based ridge waveguides, which were fabricated on BaTiO3 thin films, were formed by e-beam lithography. Au electrodes were deposited on top of the BaTiO3 films beside the waveguide. Propagation losses of the BaTiO3 ridge waveguide were 3–5 dB/cm in transverse electric polarization. The measured electrooptic coefficient value (r51) was 110 pm/V, which is three times larger than the electrooptic coefficient (r33 = 30.8 pm/V) of single crystal LiNbO3. SiO2 strip waveguide formed by HSQ exhibited light propagation with loss lower than 5 dB/cm. This result demonstrates potential possibility of creating highly oriented and/or epitaxially grown BaTiO3 waveguides and optical components on oxide substrates.

Objective: To investigate the physicochemical properties of unripe peach-Prunus persica cv. Mibaekdo (Mibaekdo) and Prunus persica cv. Nagasawa Hakuho (Nagasawa Hakuho) as an alternative to food supplement while Japanese apricot (Prunus mume cv. Backaha) (Backaha) was used as a control sample. Methods: The unripe fruits were analyzed for soluble solid (°Brix), titratable acidity, pH, total polyphenol content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, amygdalin content, free amino acid content, organic acid content, free sugar content, and α-amylase activities. Results: Total polyphenol content of unripe peach ranged between 137.27-151.64 μg/g whereas that of apricot was 160.73 μg/g. DPPH radical scavenging activities of Backaha was the highest (89.16%) followed by Mibaekdo (85.05%) and Nagasawa Hakuho (41.50%). The highest amount of oxalic acid (612.8 mg/100 g) was observed in Mibaekdo while that of Nagasawa Hakuho and Backaha were (184.6±18.1) and (334.8±16.1) mg/100 g, respectively. Amygdalin contents of Mibaekdo, Nagasawa Hakuho and Backaha were 486.61, 548.60 and 174.28 μg/g, respectively. Conclusions: The results suggest that the unripe fruit of peach has a significant biochemical potential of using as a food supplement with potential health benefit for human health.

A wet phase inversion process of polyamic acid (PAA) allowed fabrication of a porous membrane of polyimide (PI) with the combination of a low dielectric constant (1.7) and reasonable mechanical properties (Tensile strain: 8.04%, toughness: 3.4 MJ/m3, tensile stress: 39.17 MPa, and young modulus: 1.13 GPa), with further thermal imidization process of PAA. PAA was simply synthesized from purified pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4-oxydianiline (ODA) in two different reaction solvents such as γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP), which produce Mw/PDI of 630,000/1.45 and 280,000/2.0, respectively. The porous PAA membrane was fabricated by the wet phase inversion process based on a solvent/non-solvent system via tailored composition between GBL and NMP. The porosity of PI, indicative of a low electric constant, decreased with increasing concentration of GBL, which was caused by sponge-like formation. However, due to interplay between the low electric constant (structural formation) and the mechanical properties, GBL was employed for further exploration, using toluene and acetone vs. DI-water as a coagulation media. Non-solvents influenced determination of the PAA membrane size and porosity. With this approach, insight into the interplay between dielectric properties and mechanical properties will inform a wide range of potential low-k material applications.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is an endogenous danger signal molecule. In a previous report, we showed that HMGB1 is massively released during NMDA-induced acute damaging process in the postischemic brain and triggers inflammatory processes, like microglial activation. siRNA-mediated HMGB1 knockdown markedly reduced infarct volumes, confirming the crucial role played by HMGB1 in the postischemic brain. In the present study, we showed neuroprotective effects of glycyrrhizin (GL) in the postischemic rat brain after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). GL, a triterpene present in the roots and rhizomes of licorice, Glycyrrhiza glabra, has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects. It has been reported that GL binds directly to HMGB1, and inhibits its chemoattractant and mitogenic activities. The administration of GL (10 mg/kg) intravenously at 3 or 6 h after MCAO reduced infarct volumes to 12.9±4.2% and 46.2±9.9%, respectively, of untreated control. This neuroprotective effect was accompanied by improvements in motor impairment and neurological deficits and suppressions of microglia activation and proinflammatory cytokine induction. Interestingly, GL almost completely blocked HMGB1 secretion in the postischemic brain and in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated microglia cells. Furthermore, HMGB1 phosphorylation, which is the initial step for HMGB1 secretion, and the interaction between HMGB1 and protein kinase C (PKC) or calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV (CaMKIV) were suppressed dose-dependently by GL. Here, we hypothesized that the blockage for the putative phosphorylation sites in HMGB1 by GL might be attributed to this suppression. In addition to the anti-inflammatory effects, we found that GL has anti-excitotoxic and anti-oxidative effects in neurons. Together these results indicate that GL has neuroprotective efficacy in the postischemic brain via its anti-inflammatory, anti-excitotoxic, and anti-oxidative effects and in particular, it exerts anti-inflammatory effect, at least in part, by inhibiting HMGB1 secretion.

Fermented soybeans, cheonggukjang (CKJ), are considered to be more wholesome than soybeans in Korea. To select the best soybean cultivar for making functional CKJ, a comparison was made between the biological activities of four soybean cultivars in their unfermented soybean (UFS) and CKJ states. Changes in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity, 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) assays, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, total phenolic compounds, total amino acids, and isoflavones were investigated. The levels of DPPH, ABTS, SOD-like activity, and total phenolic compounds increased in CKJ among all cultivars. The isoflavone aglycone and total amino acids showed the highest amount in CKJ prepared from soybean cultivar Aga 3. These results suggest that the improved antioxidant activity of CKJ in all cultivars might occur because of the higher levels of aglycones and total phenolic compounds achieved during fermentation. Moreover, CKJ prepared from soybean cultivar Aga 3 showed higher antioxidant activity than the other cultivars and so can be considered for the commercial production of functional foods in the future.

Pesticidal activities of 4-[5-(2-cyclopropylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)-4-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-phenyl)thiazol-2-yl]-1-methylpiperidine, designated as Comp I, have been determined against a mosquito larva, Culex pipiens pallens, and a phytopathogenic fungus, Phytophthora capsici. Comp I was used as the leading compound in this study. The compounds were synthesized by reacting them with two functional groups, 3-thiophenyl and 2-thiophenyl groups, instead of 4-chloro-2-fluorophenyl group in Comp I. Other functional groups such as 2-aminothiazole, 2-(1-methylpiperazin-4-yl)thiazole, and 2-(piperazin-4-yl)thiazole were also introduced instead of 2-methylpiperidin-4-yl-thiazole of Comp I. Compounds designated as XIII-6~XV-7 were newly synthesized and their structures were confirmed by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Mosquito larvicidal activities of all the synthesized compounds against C. pipiens pallens were examined and Comp I among them showed the strongest larvicidal activity as 0.513 mM of LC50 value. The fungicidal activities of all the synthesized compounds against P. capsici were examined using the whole plant method. Among the XIII-6~XV-7 chemicals, 5-(2-cyclopropylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)thiazol-2-amine (VIII-6) showed the most potent antifungal activity in vivo. While the EC50 value of the commercial fungicide dimethomorph was 4.26 μM, EC50 of VIII-6 was 0.94 μM. Therefore, thiazole derivatives can be considered as viable candidates for the control of mosquito larvae and plant diseases.

Soybean sprouts are a major food item in Korea. Various studies have been carried out to enhance their yield and nutritional values. The objective of the present study was to examine the influence of persimmon fruit powder and Indolbi, a synthetic plant growth regulator, on the yield and nutritional value of soybean sprouts. Seeds were soaked in tap water containing 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.5% and 5.0% (w/v) persimmon fruit powder and the samples were named as PT-1, PT-2, PT-3, and PT-4, respectively. The yield increment was almost doubled in PT-3 and PT-4 than in the Indolbi treated sprouts on basis of the control. Vitamin C, isoflavones, and total phenolic contents as well as antioxidant potentials (determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and superoxide anion radical scavenging assays) were also significantly (p < 0.05) higher in PT-3 compared to the Indolbi treatment and the control. However, total free amino acid and magnesium contents of Indolbi- applied sprouts were higher than in the fruit powder treatments. The overall results of the present study showed that persimmon fruit powder can be an option to enhance the yield and nutritional value of soybean sprouts since, due to potential health hazards, the use of synthetic chemicals like Indolbi is less preferred than the natural products.

In the current study, the functional and biochemical potential of the seeds of four persimmon cultivars (PC1, PC2, PC3 and PC4) and their role against oxidative stress and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition were evaluated. In terms of biochemical compositions, free amino acids, fatty acids and organic acids analysis was performed. The free amino acids ranged from 2617.31 (PC2) to 3773.01 μg∙g−1 dry weight (PC4). Oleic acid and linoleic acid were the principal fatty acids, which were significantly higher in PC4 and PC1, respectively. PC4 presented the highest amount of organic acid content (4212 mg∙kg−1), whereas PC2 presented the lowest (2498 mg∙kg−1). PC2 contained higher total phenolic content and flavonoid content, whereas PC3 had the lowest amount as compared to other cultivars. The in vitro DPPH, ABTS and superoxide anion radicals scavenging activity increased in a dose-dependent manner, whereas PC2 showed significantly higher scavenging activities as compared to PC1, PC2 and PC4 types. In the case of AChE inhibition, PC4 showed a moderate activity (67.34% ± 1.8%). In conclusion, the current findings reveal that the studied persimmon seeds cultivars are a source of bioactive natural antioxidants and AChE inhibitors. Such natural products could be employed in pharmaceutical and food industries, whilst can also be considered for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
