5. Modeling study of PM2.5 pollution episode of early spring 2019 in Hokkaido, Japan caused by biomass burning in Northeast China

Abstract

Biomass burning (BB), in particular agricultural waste burning (Agri-BB), occurs at random locations, scales, and times. These factors make it challenging to detect Agri-BB accurately through satellite observations. Thus, the BB emission inventories using satellite observation data have uncertainties for their emission estimation approach and cause poor model performance for air pollutants including PM2.5. We utilized the two BB emission inventories, GFEDv4.1s and FINNv2.5 with the CMAQ model to simulate the PM2.5 heavy pollution episode in Hokkaido 2019. To estimate Agri-BB contributions, we conducted three simulation cases for each BB emission inventory: with and without Agri-BB emission, and the boosted Agri-BB emission cases. The baseline simulation failed to capture the temporal and spatial variation patterns of PM2.5. Meanwhile, the boosted Agri-BB case could show favorable performance for PM2.5 concentrations. These results indicated that the two BB emission inventories underestimated Agri-BB emissions. In the two boosted Agri-BB cases, the PM2.5 contributions from Agri-BB accounted for more than 50% during the episode. Moreover, high PM2.5 emissions were found in Northeast China and its surrounding regions similar to the two boosted Agri-BB cases. Consequently, the results revealed that Agri-BB emissions during the episode were significantly derived from the agricultural areas in Northeast China.

Abstract

An AMS system (Model 4130-AMS) dedicated to 14C measurements, built by High Voltage Engineering Europe (HVEE), B.V., The Netherlands, was delivered to Nagoya University in 1996/97. Acceptance tests of its performance on carbon isotope measurements were completed in January of 1999, and routine measurements began in mid-2000. Since completion of the acceptance tests in early 1999, we have encountered a lot of troubles with the machine, particularly in 2002. Since the end of 2002, the machine has worked relatively well, expect for minor problems. The standard deviation (one sigma) of the 14C/12C ratio is around ±0.3% to ±0.4% (a bit larger than the uncertainty of about ±0.3% calculated from 14C counting statistics) and that of the corresponding 13C/12C ratio is ±0.03% to ±0.07%, as are tested for HOxII targets. The number of targets measured was 330, 1430, 2077, 1003, 1,979, 1679, 1772, 1115, 1339, 866, 1300, 1701, 1449, 1634, 1351, 1741, 1156 in each year from 1999 to 2015, respectively, and total number of targets measured by the end of 2015 is 23,921. We briefly describe the maintenance processes and application results of the AMS system in 2015. The Tandetron AMS system at Nagoya University worked rather well in 2015, with only minor failures, such as (1) X-Y direction movement trouble of target surface to change sputtering positions, (2) compressed-air-leakage problem of an air cylinder to exchange targets to be measured, (3) unexpected break down of high voltage of accelerator without any sparks, without any specific reasons, (4) ion source cleaning due to shortage of Cs in the container, (5) high temperature problem of the circulating water for cooling down the power supply system for two high-energy mass-analyzing magnets. The error no. (3) above became a serious problem at last in December, because we cannot reset a system diagnostic alarm concerning a high voltage spark at last. It was finally found out that the problem caused by a malfunction of the spark-detector circuit unit, mounted on the top of the accelerator tank. \In 2015, we also carried out many application programs of 14C measurements. Abstract

To estimate the contributions of Fossil-derived Carbon (Fos-C) and Bio-derived-Carbon (Bio-C) in some regions in Japan, 14C concentration of total carbon in Total suspended particles (TSP) was measured at three sites (Nagoya (n=16), Suwa (n=l5) and Kamikochi (n=9)) in Japan. Average values of pMC (% Modern Carbon) were (Nagoya < Suwa < Kamikochi). Average concentrations of Bio-C were (Nagoya > Suwa > Kamikochi). Average concentrations of Fos-C were (Nagoya > Suwa > Kamikochi). The high concentrations of Bio-C at three sites in spring were caused by pollens. The influences of biomass burning increased pMC value in fall in Nagoya. The increase of pMC and WSOC concentrations indicated that secondary organic carbon was generated from Bio-C in summer in Suwa. The decreased of pMC value in winter in Kamikochi was caused by low concentrations of Bio-C. WSOC/OC was large ratio in this season in Kamikochi indicated that OC was transported from distant places because secondary reaction was hard to progress in vicinity in winter., タンデトロン加速器質量分析計業績報告

Abstract

Seasonal patterns in fossil fuel-derived carbon (FC) and biomass-derived carbon (BC) components of aerosols in Fukuoka were investigated by 14C and δ13C measurements of total carbon (TC) in PM2.5 collected at an urban location in Fukuoka during a period from April 2012 to March 2013. The annnal mean 14C of TC was 57.1土6.4 pMC (n=52). In spring, summer, and fall, BC concentration was higher than FC concentration, while in winter, FC became increased, and δ13C was more enriched than in the other seasons. Abstract

PM2.5 aerosols were collected in Nagoya. Daily sampling was also carried out from April 2003 to March 2004 (n=173). The annual mean concentrations of PM2.5, OC (Organic Carbon) and EC (Elemental Carbon) was 26.2, 5.3 and 4.9 μg/m^3, respectively. When the sample was distributed to secure the sample amount that was able to be measured, it became 26 samples in total. When 14C concentration was measured, and pMC was calculated, the mean value of pMC was 37.1. In May and June, pMC was higher than other months. OC/EC that was the index of the secondary organic aerosol formation was similarly high in May and June. BC (Biomass-derived carbon) and FC (fossil-fuel-derived carbon) were calculated from the value of pMC. The correlation coefficient of BC and OC was 0.97. Abstract

Background: Seasonal variation and regional heterogeneity have been observed in the estimated effect of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass on mortality. Differences in the chemical compositions of PM2.5 may cause this variation. We investigated the association of the daily concentration of PM2.5 components with mortality in Nagoya, Japan. Methods: We combined daily mortality counts for all residents aged 65 years and older with concentration data for PM2.5 mass and components in Nagoya from April 2003 to December 2007. A time-stratified case-crossover design was used to examine the association of daily mortality with PM2.5 mass and each component (chloride, nitrate, sulfate, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, ammonium, elemental carbon [EC], and organic carbon [OC]). Results: We found a stronger association between mortality and PM2.5 mass in transitional seasons. In analysis for each PM2.5 component, sulfate, nitrate, chloride, ammonium, potassium, EC, and OC were significantly associated with mortality in a single-pollutant model. In a multi-pollutant model, an interquartile range increase in the concentration of sulfate was marginally associated with an increase in all-cause mortality of 2.1% (95% confidence interval, -0.1 to 4.4). Conclusions: These findings suggest that some specific PM components have a more hazardous effect than others and contribute to seasonal variation in the health effects of PM2.5.
