3. Metastable phase of UTe$_2$ formed under high pressure above 5 GPa

Abstract

Uranium ditelluride (UTe$_2$) has attracted recent interest due to its unique superconducting properties, which include the potential for a topological odd-parity superconducting state. Recently, ac-calorimetry measurements under pressure indicate a change in the ground state of UTe$_2$ from superconducting to antiferromagnetic at 1.4 GPa. Here, we investigate the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of UTe$_2$ up to 25 GPa at room temperature using x-ray diffraction. We find that UTe$_2$, which at ambient conditions has an orthorhombic ($Immm$) structure, transforms to a body-centered tetragonal ($I4/mmm$) structure at 5 GPa in a quasi-hydrostatic neon (Ne) pressure transmitting medium. In the absence of a pressure-transmitting medium, this transformation occurs between 5 and 8 GPa. The data were fit with a third-order Birch-Murnaghan equation of state resulting in values of $B_0$=46.0 $\pm$ 0.6 GPa, $B^{\prime}$=9.3 $\pm$ 0.5 (no pressure medium) and $B_0$=42.5 $\pm$ 2.0 GPa, $B^{\prime}$=9.3 (fixed) (neon pressure medium) for the $Immm$ phase. For the $I4/mmm$ phase, $B_0$=78.9 $\pm$ 0.5 GPa and $B^{\prime}$=4.2 $\pm$ 0.1 (no pressure transmitting medium), and $B_0$=70.0 $\pm$ 1.1 GPa and $B^{\prime}$=4.1 $\pm$ 0.2 (neon pressure medium). The high-pressure tetragonal phase is retained after decompression to ambient pressure, with approximately 30% remaining after 2 days. We argue that the observed phase transition into a higher symmetry structure at P~5 GPa (orthorhombic to tetragonal), is accompanied by an increase in the shortest distance between uranium atoms from 3.6 Angstrom (orthorhombic) to 3.9 Angstrom (tetragonal), which suggests localization of the 5f electrons, albeit with a 10.7% decrease in volume., Comment: Includes supplemental material

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To examine a 12-month dementia care management program's effect on health care cost, utilization, and overall return on investment in a Medicare managed care population. STUDY DESIGN: Pre-post analysis of participants (n = 121) enrolled in Ochsner's Care Ecosystem program from 2019 through 2021 compared with propensity-matched controls (n = 121). The primary outcome comparison was total cost of care. Secondary outcomes included components of total cost of care (eg, inpatient, outpatient, emergency department [ED] costs), health care utilization (eg, number of ED visits), and differences in Hierarchical Condition Category (HCC) risk scores. METHODS: Difference-in-differences analyses were conducted from baseline through 12 months comparing various financial metrics and utilization between groups. RESULTS: Care Ecosystem participants had significantly lower total cost of care at 12 months, mean savings of $475.80 per member per month compared with controls. Care Ecosystem participants had fewer ED, outpatient, and professional visits. HCC risk scores were also better relative to matched controls. CONCLUSIONS: A collaborative dementia care program demonstrated significant financial benefit in a managed Medicare population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report, through experimental observations and computer simulations, that atomic lattice interlocking can determine whether an object rolls or slides on a surface. We have quantitatively manipulated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on a variety of substrates with an atomic force microscope (AFM) and observe rolling to occur only on graphite. We measure the forces when the CNT is in-registry with the graphite lattice, and observe rolling only in this lock-in state. Atomistic computer simulations identify the energy barriers for sliding and rolling, elucidate atomic-scale features of slip-roll motion, and explain the details of the lateral force data in terms of the intrinsic faceting of multiwall CNTs., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We investigate the response of multi-walled carbon nanotubes to mechanical strain applied with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) probe. We find that in some samples, changes in the contact resistance dominate the measured resistance change. In others, strain large enough to fracture the tube can be applied without a significant change in the contact resistance. In this case we observe that enough force is applied to break the tube without any change in resistance until the tube fails. We have also manipulated the ends of the broken tube back in contact with each other, re-establishing a finite resistance. We observe that in this broken configuration the resistance of the sample is tunable to values 15-350 kW greater than prior to breaking., Comment: Submitted to Applied Physics Letters

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Failure of Alzheimers disease and related diseases (ADRD) research studies to include and engage Black participants is a major issue, which limits the impact and generalizability of research findings. Little is known about participation of Black adults in online ADRD-related research registries. OBJECTIVES: As part of the Community Engaged Digital Alzheimers Research (CEDAR) Study, this study aims to increase our understanding of facilitators and barriers of Black adults to participating in ADRD-related online registries, as well as to understand their preferences for communication channels. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, MEASUREMENTS: We invited all Black participants enrolled in the Brain Health Registry (BHR) to complete a cross-sectional online survey. The survey consisted of rating scales and open-text questions asking about their attitudes towards brain health research, reasons for joining and continuing to participate in BHR, difficulties with participating, and preferences for modes of contact and website usage. RESULTS: Of all invited Black BHR participants (N=3,636), 198 (5.5%) completed the survey. The mean age was 58.4 (SD=11.3), mean years of education were 16.3 (SD=2.4), and 85.5% identified as female. Reported facilitators for joining and continuing to participate in BHR were personal interest (e.g., learning more about own brain health) and altruism (e.g., helping research). Among additional registry features which could encourage return, receiving feedback or scores about BHR tasks was rated the highest. Of those who found BHR participation difficult (21%), the most frequent reason was time burden. The most preferred way of receiving study information was via email. Participants reported that the websites that they used the most were YouTube and Facebook. DISCUSSION: The results of our study can inform the development of culturally-responsive registry features and engagement efforts to improve inclusion and participation of Black adults

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Although Black/African American older adults bear significant inequities in prevalence, incidence, and outcomes of Alzheimers disease and related dementias, they are profoundly under-included in Alzheimers Disease research. Community-Engaged Research (e.g., equitable community/science partnerships) is an evidence-based approach for improving engagement of underrepresented populations into Alzheimers Disease research, but has lacked scalability to the national level. As internet use among older adults from underrepresented populations continues to grow, internet-based research shows promise as a feasible, valid approach to engagement and longitudinal assessment. The Community Engaged Digital Alzheimers Research (CEDAR) study utilizes a community-engaged research approach to increase the engagement and research participation of Black/African American adults in the Brain Health Registry (BHR) and Alzheimer Disease clinical research. OBJECTIVES: To describe the methods and evaluate the feasibility of the CEDAR culturally-informed digital platform within BHR. DESIGN: All Black/African American participants in BHR were invited to enroll in CEDAR and to consider serving on a newly convened Community-Scientific Partnership Board to guide the study. The community board guided the development a culturally-informed cadre of engagement materials and strategies to increase research participation. Engagement strategies included incentives for study task completion, culturally-informed communications (e.g., landing page, emails and social media), resources about brain health, and video and written testimonials by CEDAR participants. SETTING: BHR, an Internet-based registry and cohort. PARTICIPANTS: BHR participants self-identifying as Black/African American were invited to enroll.
