This article explores the dialogical collaboration and friendship between Martti Siirala and Gaetano Benedetti, particularly in the development of the psychotherapy of schizophrenia and the human psychotherapeutic attitude toward carrying and sharing burdens. Siirala and Benedetti outlined a psychotherapy that considers existential and philosophical dimensions alongside the clinical aspects of illness, without being bound by schools of thought, authorities, or doctrinal systems. The main material in the article is based on documents from the Martti Siirala archive, the most important of which is the German-language correspondence between Siirala and Benedetti after Siirala moved back to Finland from Switzerland at the end of 1957. Benedetti's activities in Basel are also illuminated by descriptions sent to Siirala by nurse Aino Kärkkäinen of her experiences in Switzerland in the late 1950s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been supposed that those who give many Rorschach movement responses and score high on the TAT Transcendence Index are more inhibited in their motor activity. In previous studies motor inhibition was investigated by experimentally preventing motor activity. In the present study the effects of long-term motor inhibition on movement perception and fantasy level were explored in 19 physically handicapped children, ages 11 to 15 years. Analysis showed that the physically handicapped children produced more (both human and animal) movement responses than the 19 normal children. Fantasy in the TAT was also higher in the former group. The theoretical basis of projective movement responses and fantasy in physical handicap needs more clarification. A more detailed approach in qualitative analysis of the movement responses is also important.

This article is a continuation to the earlier one, published in The Journal of Psychohistory (Vol. 48, No. 4, 2021), titled "I Really Feel I Understand What's Going on in History." Like the previous article, this is also based on the letters sent by Lloyd deMause to his German colleague and translator, sociologist Aurel Ende. Another boulder of such letters spanning the years 1982-1985 has been used here as additional material to the earlier correspondence of the years 1977-1982. The article contains deMause's conceptions of writing and translating psychohistory and reveals some practical concerns in the publishing of psychohistorical books and journals, as well as profiles his basic research interests that had strong ties to evolutionary biology and psychology rather than sociology or history. This compilation of the passages from Lloyd deMause's letters to his German colleague and translator Aurel Ende gives a view of deMause, at the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, in his relation to German psychohistory as well as to pre- and perinatal psychology, primal therapy, and psychoanalysis. The letters also touch upon deMause's instructions concerning psychohistorical research methods and reveal his position in his personal life. The article states that the losses and traumas that former Soviet leader Joseph Stalin experienced in his early life explain his cold personality. According to the author, Stalin himself dated his loss of any warm feelings to the funeral of his first wife Ekaterina Svanidze in 1907. When his mother died, it was noted that Stalin let the Great Terror loose to atrocious extremes, transmitting and extending his fusion confusion throughout the whole of the Soviet Union.

The idea of unconscious fantasy plays a central role in psychoanalysis. In terms of cognitive orientation, however, the logic behind it is difficult to determine because psychoanalysis has not succeeded in establishing how and where such fantasies exist. This article introduces the reasons why psychoanalysts think in terms of unconscious fantasies: the very notion facilitates the interconnection of the analysand's patterns of behavior and her/his emerging contents of consciousness. The authors put forward arguments in favor of an instrumentalist view of unconscious fantasies, and suggest that the talk about them abstracts the functioning of the brain. In the spirit of neuropsychoanalysis, a connection is also created between the phenomena found in clinical psychoanalytic practice and the findings of neuroscience and the empirical study of implicit knowledge. The institution of psychoanalysis has included controversies, dissensions and expulsions at both the theoretical-methodological and personal-organizational levels. There have also been several intra- and intergroup conflicts in the history of psychoanalysis, and in constructing and patterning the future of psychoanalytic knowledge. In the context of Finnish psychoanalysis, the Therapeia Foundation (founded in 1958) met from the start with resistance from official psychiatry and also from the IPA. For example, in the mid-1960s, D. W. Winnicott, as the President of the IPA, supported the orthodox Finnish psychoanalytic study group (later to become the Finnish Psychoanalytical Society), and pronounced that the Therapeia group was too loose and was not strictly able to use the IPA-recognized designation "psychoanalytic." The Therapeia Foundation and its Training Seminar combined classical psychoanalysis and its new versions with existentialphenomenological views, anthropological medicine, research on "social pathology" and even modern theological research. On the basis of their Swiss analytic training, three Finnish psychiatrists, Martti Siirala, Kauko Kaila and Allan Johansson, organized Therapeian training to incorporate sciences and arts, and skills involving the therapeutic "carrying" of burdens. The multifacted nature of open psychoanalysis was seen to find its proper organizational expression when the Training Seminar of the Therapeia Foundation became, in 1974, a Member of the IFPS.
