Abstract Mitochondrial forms account approximately 1–2% of all nonsyndromic cases of hearing loss (HL). One of the most common causative variants of mtDNA is the m.1555A > G variant of the MT-RNR1 gene (OMIM 561000). Currently the detection of the m.1555A > G variant of the MT-RNR1 gene is not included in all research protocols. In this study this variant was screened among 165 patients with HL from the Republic of Buryatia, located in the Baikal Lake region of Russia. In our study, the total contribution of the m.1555A > G variant to the etiology of HL was 12.7% (21/165), while the update global prevalence of this variant is 1.8% (863/47,328). The m.1555A > G variant was notably more prevalent in Buryat (20.2%) than in Russian patients (1.3%). Mitogenome analysis in 14 unrelated Buryat families carrying the m.1555A > G variant revealed a predominant lineage: in 13 families, a cluster affiliated with sub-haplogroup A5b (92.9%) was identified, while one family had the D5a2a1 lineage (7.1%). In a Russian family with the m.1555A > G variant the lineage affiliated with sub-haplogroup F1a1d was found. Considering that more than 90% of Buryat families with the m.1555A > G variant belong to the single maternal lineage cluster we conclude that high prevalence of this variant in patients with HL in the Baikal Lake region can be attributed to a founder effect.

Recently discovered bismuthides with the BaAu2Sb2 structure type demonstrate interesting properties and electronic structures. Here, we report successful crystal growth, crystal structure, band structure calculations, and DOS for BaAg1.8Bi2 and BaAu1.8Bi2. Grown crystals were characterized by a combination of single crystal X-ray diffraction and EDX spectroscopy. Both compounds crystallized in a new variation of BaAu2Sb2 structure type and demonstrated metallic properties according to our DFT calculations.

A series of mixed copper (II)—zinc oxide catalysts supported on unmodified and ceria-modified silica supports were synthesized using β-cyclodextrin as a template. The novelty of this work lies in the use of cyclosextrins for the template synthesis of catalyst supports. The obtained samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM-EDX, low-temperature nitrogen physisorption, XPS, and EPR. The magnetic properties of the catalysts were also measured. The thermal decomposition of precursors was analyzed by TGA combined with mass-spectrometric analysis of the evolved gases. The effects of the support pore size, the nature of the active phase and its loading, as well as the sequence of component deposition on the catalyst performance in the CO2 conversion to methanol were studied. The catalysts with cerium added at the gelation stage demonstrated the best performance. The selectivity of these samples reaches values of more than 90% over a fairly ide temperature range, with the productivity reaching 480 g/kg cat·h at 300 °C.

Abstract Background We have described the diversity of complete mtDNA sequences from ‘relic’ groups of the Russian Far East, primarily the Nivkhi (who speak a language isolate with no clear relatedness to any others) and Oroki of Sakhalin, as well as the sedentary Koryak from Kamchatka and the Udegey of Primorye. Previous studies have shown that most of their traditional territory was dramatically reshaped by the expansion of Tungusic-speaking groups. Results Overall, 285 complete mitochondrial sequences were selected for phylogenetic analyses of published, revised and new mitogenomes. To highlight the likely role of Neolithic expansions in shaping the phylogeographical landscape of the Russian Far East, we focus on the major East Eurasian maternal lineages (Y1a, G1b, D4m2, D4e5, M7a2, and N9b) that are restricted to the coastal area. To obtain more insight into autochthonous populations, we removed from the phylogeographic analysis the G2a, G3a2, M8a1, M9a1, and C4b1 lineages, also found within our samples, likely resulting from admixture between the expanding proto-Tungus and the indigenous Paleoasiatic groups with whom they assimilated. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that unlike the relatively diverse lineage spectrum observed in the Amur estuary and northwestern Sakhalin, the present-day subpopulation on the northeastern coast of the island is relatively homogenous: a sole Y1a sublineage, conspicuous for its nodal mutation at m.16189 T > C!, includes different haplotypes. Sharing of the Y1a-m.16189 T > C! sublineages and haplotypes among the Nivkhi, Ulchi and sedentary Koryak is also evident. Aside from Y1a, the entire tree approach expands our understanding of the evolutionary history of haplogroups G1, D4m, N9b, and M7a2. Specifically, we identified the novel haplogroup N9b1 in Primorye, which implies a link between a component of the Udegey ancestry and the Hokkaido Jomon. Conclusions Through a comprehensive dataset of mitochondrial genomes retained in autochthonous populations along the coast between Primorye and the Bering Strait, we considerably extended the sequence diversity of these populations to provide new features based on the number and timing of founding lineages. We emphasize the value of integrating genealogical information with genetic data for reconstructing the population history of indigenous groups dramatically impacted by twentieth century resettlement and social upheavals.

The appearance of electrically neutral water molecules in the structure of cobalt dinitrate dihydrate, Co(NO3)2⋅2H2O, drastically changes its magnetic properties as compared to its waterless counterpart, Co(NO3)2. The title compound shows Ising-like behavior reflected in its thermodynamic properties. It experiences long-range antiferromagnetic order at TN = 20.5 K and metamagnetic transition at µ0HC = 0.76 T. First-principles calculations produce the values of leading exchange interactions J1 ~ 10 K and J2 ~ 0.5 K and single-ion anisotropy D ~ 1 K which allows us to consider Co(NO3)2⋅2H2O as a quasi-two-dimensional magnetic system.

Abstract Background Mutations in GJB2 gene are a major causes of deafness and their spectrum and prevalence are specific for various populations. The well-known mutation c.35delG is more frequent in populations of Caucasian origin. Data on the c.35delG prevalence in Russia are mainly restricted to the European part of this country. We aimed to estimate the carrier frequency of c.35delG in Western Siberia and thereby update current data on the c.35delG prevalence in Russia. According to a generally accepted hypothesis, c.35delG originated from a common ancestor in the Middle East or the Mediterranean ~ 10,000–14,000 years ago and spread throughout Europe with Neolithic migrations. To test the c.35delG common origin hypothesis, we have reconstructed haplotypes bearing c.35delG and evaluated the approximate age of c.35delG in Siberia. Methods The carrier frequency of c.35delG was estimated in 122 unrelated hearing individuals living in Western Siberia. For reconstruction of haplotypes bearing c.35delG, polymorphic D13S141, D13S175, D13S1853 flanking the GJB2 gene, and intragenic rs3751385 were genotyped in deaf patients homozygous for c.35delG (n = 24) and in unrelated healthy individuals negative for c.35delG (n = 67) living in Siberia. Results We present updated carrier rates for c.35delG in Russia complemented by new data on c.35delG carrier frequency in Russians living in Western Siberia (4.1%). Two common D13S141-c.35delG-D13S175-D13S1853 haplotypes, 126-c.35delG-105-202 and 124-c.35delG-105-202, were reconstructed in the c.35delG homozygotes from Siberia. Moreover, identical allelic composition of the two most frequent c.35delG haplotypes restricted by D13S141 and D13S175 was established in geographically remote regions: Siberia and Volga-Ural region (Russia) and Belarus (Eastern Europe). Conclusions Distribution of the c.35delG carrier frequency in Russia is characterized by pronounced ethno-geographic specificity with a downward trend from west to east. Comparative analysis of the c.35delG haplotypes supports a common origin of c.35delG in some regions of Russia (Volga-Ural region and Siberia) and in Eastern Europe (Belarus). A rough estimation of the c.35delG age in Siberia (about 4800 to 8100 years ago) probably reflects the early formation stages of the modern European population (including the European part of the contemporary territory of Russia) since the settlement of Siberia by Russians started only at the end of sixteenth century.

Hereditary hearing loss (HL) is known to be highly locus/allelic heterogeneous, and the prevalence of different HL forms significantly varies among populations worldwide. Investigation of region-specific landscapes of hereditary HL is important for local healthcare and medical genetic services. Mutations in the SLC26A4 gene leading to nonsyndromic recessive deafness (DFNB4) and Pendred syndrome are common genetic causes of hereditary HL, at least in some Asian populations. We present for the first time the results of a thorough analysis of the SLC26A4 gene by Sanger sequencing in the large cohorts of patients with HL of unknown etiology belonging to two neighboring indigenous Turkic-speaking Siberian peoples (Tuvinians and Altaians). A definite genetic diagnosis based on the presence of biallelic SLC26A4 mutations was established for 28.2% (62/220) of all enrolled Tuvinian patients vs. 4.3% (4/93) of Altaian patients. The rate of the SLC26A4-related HL in Tuvinian patients appeared to be one of the highest among populations worldwide. The SLC26A4 mutational spectrum was characterized by the presence of Asian-specific mutations c.919-2A>G and c.2027T>A (p.Leu676Gln), predominantly found in Tuvinian patients, and c.2168A>G (p.His723Arg), which was only detected in Altaian patients. In addition, a novel pathogenic variant c.1545T>G (p.Phe515Leu) was found with high frequency in Tuvinian patients. Overall, based on the findings of this study and our previous research, we were able to uncover the genetic causes of HL in 50.5% of Tuvinian patients and 34.5% of Altaian patients.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is an orphan genetic disease with autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance characterised by varying degrees of hearing loss accompanied by skin, hair and iris pigmentation abnormalities. Four types of WS differing in phenotypic characteristics are now described. We performed a Sanger sequencing of coding regions of genes PAX3, MITF, SOX10 and SNAI2 in the patient with WS from a Yakut family living in the Sakha Republic. No changes were found in the PAX3, SOX10 and SNAI2 coding regions while a previously reported heterozygous transition c.772C>T (p.Arg259*) in exon 8 of the MITF gene was found in this patient. This patient presents rare phenotype of WS type 2: congenital unilateral hearing loss, unilateral heterochromia of irises, and absence of skin/hair depigmentation and dystopia canthorum. Audiological variability in WS type 2, caused by the c.772C>T (p.Arg259*) variant in the MITF gene, outlines the importance of molecular analysis and careful genotype–phenotype comparisons in order to optimally inform patients about the risk of hearing loss. The results of this study confirm the association of pathogenic variants in the MITF gene with WS type 2 and expanded data on the variability of audiological features of the WS.

In silico predictive software allows assessing the effect of amino acid substitutions on the structure or function of a protein without conducting functional studies. The accuracy of in silico pathogenicity prediction tools has not been previously assessed for variants associated with autosomal recessive deafness 1A (DFNB1A). Here, we identify in silico tools with the most accurate clinical significance predictions for missense variants of the GJB2 (Cx26), GJB6 (Cx30), and GJB3 (Cx31) connexin genes associated with DFNB1A. To evaluate accuracy of selected in silico tools (SIFT, FATHMM, MutationAssessor, PolyPhen-2, CONDEL, MutationTaster, MutPred, Align GVGD, and PROVEAN), we tested nine missense variants with previously confirmed clinical significance in a large cohort of deaf patients and control groups from the Sakha Republic (Eastern Siberia, Russia): Сх26: p.Val27Ile, p.Met34Thr, p.Val37Ile, p.Leu90Pro, p.Glu114Gly, p.Thr123Asn, and p.Val153Ile; Cx30: p.Glu101Lys; Cx31: p.Ala194Thr. We compared the performance of the in silico tools (accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity) by using the missense variants in GJB2 (Cx26), GJB6 (Cx30), and GJB3 (Cx31) genes associated with DFNB1A. The correlation coefficient (r) and coefficient of the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve as alternative quality indicators of the tested programs were used. The resulting ROC curves demonstrated that the largest coefficient of the area under the curve was provided by three programs: SIFT (AUC = 0.833, p = 0.046), PROVEAN (AUC = 0.833, p = 0.046), and MutationAssessor (AUC = 0.833, p = 0.002). The most accurate predictions were given by two tested programs: SIFT and PROVEAN (Ac = 89%, Se = 67%, Sp = 100%, r = 0.75, AUC = 0.833). The results of this study may be applicable for analysis of novel missense variants of the GJB2 (Cx26), GJB6 (Cx30), and GJB3 (Cx31) connexin genes.

A bismuth subbromide, Bi6Br7, was synthesized in the form of single crystals using the reaction between Bi and Hg2Br2 in a gradient furnace. Its crystal structure was reinvestigated by low-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction (Pnnm, a = 15.4996(6) Å, b = 23.6435(7) Å, c = 9.0231(2) Å, Z = 8, R1 = 0.041, wRall = 0.087). Based on the diffraction data, the structure description was revised as containing Bi95+ cluster polycations and 1∞[Bi3Br145−] ladder-like anions. DFT calculations of band structure showed the compound to be a narrow-gap semiconductor with a band gap of ca. 1.3 eV, with the nature of the compound as ionic salt confirmed by charge density analysis. Direct-space bonding analysis based on the ELF topology and QTAIM partitioning, performed for all known homoatomic bismuth polycations, as well as isoelectronic main-group metal ions, shows patterns of localized pairwise and three-center bonding forming the frameworks of the clusters. In addition to obtaining new data, the use of highly augmented basis sets allowed us to revise and amend several previously made conclusions regarding bonding in such species.

The finite coupling between Weyl nodes due to residual disorder is investigated by magnetotransport studies in WTe_{2}. The anisotropic scattering of quasiparticles is evidenced from classical and quantum transport measurements. A theoretical approach using the real band structure is developed in order to calculate the dependence of the scattering anisotropy with the correlation length of the disorder. A comparison between theory and experiments reveals a short correlation length in WTe_{2} (ξ∼5 nm). This result implies a significant coupling between Weyl nodes and other bands. Our study thus shows that a finite intercone scattering rate always exists in weakly disordered type-II Weyl semimetals, such as WTe_{2}, which strongly suppresses topologically nontrivial properties.

The onset of superconductivity at the transition temperature is marked by the onset of order, which is characterized by an energy gap. Most models of the iron-based superconductors find a sign-changing (s±) order parameter [1–6], with the physical implication that pairing is driven by spin fluctuations. Recent work, however, has indicated that LiFeAs has a simple isotropic order parameter [7–9] and spin fluctuations are not necessary [7,10], contrary to the models [1–6]. The strength of the spin fluctuations has been controversial [11,12], meaning that the mechanism of superconductivity cannot as yet be determined. We report the momentum dependence of the superconducting energy gap, where we find an anisotropy that rules out coupling through spin fluctuations and the sign change. The results instead suggest that orbital fluctuations assisted by phonons [13,14] are the best explanation for superconductivity.
