We analyze resonant magneto-elastic interactions between standing perpendicular spin wave modes (exchange magnons) and longitudinal acoustic phonon modes in free-standing hybrid metal-ferromagnet bilayer and trilayer structures. Whereas the ferromagnetic layer acts as a magnetic cavity, all metal layers control the frequencies and eigenmodes of acoustic vibrations. The here proposed design allows for achieving and tuning the spectral and spatial modes overlap between phonons and magnons that results in their strong resonant interaction. Realistic simulations for gold-nickel multilayers show that sweeping the external magnetic field should allow for observing resonantly enhanced interactions between individual magnon and phonon modes in a broad range of frequencies spanning from tens of GHz up to several hundreds of GHz, which can be finely tuned through the multilayer design. Our results would enable the systematic study and the deep understanding of resonantly enhanced magneto-elastic coupling between individual phonon and magnon modes up to frequencies of great contemporary fundamental and applied interest., 9 pages, 6 figures

Magneto-optical (MO) effects, viz. magnetically induced changes in light intensity or polarization upon reflection from or transmission through a magnetic sample, were discovered over a century and a half ago. Initially they played a crucially relevant role in unveiling the fundamentals of electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. A more broad-based relevance and wide-spread use of MO methods, however, remained quite limited until the 1960s due to a lack of suitable, reliable and easy-to-operate light sources. The advent of Laser technology and the availability of other novel light sources led to an enormous expansion of MO measurement techniques and applications that continues to this day (see section 1). The here-assembled roadmap article is intended to provide a meaningful survey over many of the most relevant recent developments, advances, and emerging research directions in a rather condensed form, so that readers can easily access a significant overview about this very dynamic research field. While light source technology and other experimental developments were crucial in the establishment of today's magneto-optics, progress also relies on an ever-increasing theoretical understanding of MO effects from a quantum mechanical perspective (see section 2), as well as using electromagnetic theory and modelling approaches (see section 3) to enable quantitatively reliable predictions for ever more complex materials, metamaterials, and device geometries. The latest advances in established MO methodologies and especially the utilization of the MO Kerr effect (MOKE) are presented in sections 4 (MOKE spectroscopy), 5 (higher order MOKE effects), 6 (MOKE microscopy), 8 (high sensitivity MOKE), 9 (generalized MO ellipsometry), and 20 (Cotton-Mouton effect in two-dimensional materials). In addition, MO effects are now being investigated and utilized in spectral ranges, to which they originally seemed completely foreign, as those of synchrotron radiation x-rays (see section 14 on three-dimensional magnetic characterization and section 16 on light beams carrying orbital angular momentum) and, very recently, the terahertz (THz) regime (see section 18 on THz MOKE and section 19 on THz ellipsometry for electron paramagnetic resonance detection). Magneto-optics also demonstrates its strength in a unique way when combined with femtosecond laser pulses (see section 10 on ultrafast MOKE and section 15 on magneto-optics using x-ray free electron lasers), facilitating the very active field of time-resolved MO spectroscopy that enables investigations of phenomena like spin relaxation of non-equilibrium photoexcited carriers, transient modifications of ferromagnetic order, and photo-induced dynamic phase transitions, to name a few. Recent progress in nanoscience and nanotechnology, which is intimately linked to the achieved impressive ability to reliably fabricate materials and functional structures at the nanoscale, now enables the exploitation of strongly enhanced MO effects induced by light-matter interaction at the nanoscale (see section 12 on magnetoplasmonics and section 13 on MO metasurfaces). MO effects are also at the very heart of powerful magnetic characterization techniques like Brillouin light scattering and time-resolved pump-probe measurements for the study of spin waves (see section 7), their interactions with acoustic waves (see section 11), and ultra-sensitive magnetic field sensing applications based on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond (see section 17)., Despite our best attempt to represent the field of magneto-optics accurately and do justice to all its novel developments and its diversity, the research area is so extensive and active that there remains great latitude in deciding what to include in an article of this sort, which in turn means that some areas might not be adequately represented here. However, we feel that the 20 sections that form this 2022 magneto-optics roadmap article, each written by experts in the field and addressing a specific subject on only two pages, provide an accurate snapshot of where this research field stands today. We present the results of diffraction studies and the electromagnetic (EM) field distribution in a microsphere of vanadium dioxide (VO2) before and after the metal–semiconductor phase transition (MSPT) is presented. As a result of the calculations, it has been shown that after the phase transition point in VO2 (T > Tc), the EM wave field practically does not pass into the microsphere, almost completely reflecting from it and scattering, which is associated with a sharp increase in the imaginary part of the dielectric constant of the microsphere, the VO2 transition into metallic state and commensurability of the EM wavelength with the radius of microsphere. Тhe radiation intensity has been found to decrease abruptly at a distance 2R from the surface of microsphere, which is associated with the interference of waves behind the microsphere (shadow region). The simulation of the diffraction and distribution of the EM field inside and outside microsphere allows us to propose a new method for studying phase transitions of the MSPT type.

The frequency dependences of the group velocity and the damping of a magnetoelastic surface wave have been studied at various values of an external magnetic field and various angles of propagation. The group velocity bursts are observed at frequencies, at which peaks of surface wave damping take place. The behavior of a surface magnetoelastic wave is also studied near the orientation phase transition. In the phase transition point, the group velocity is changed by 1%. The dependences of the damping along the surface at various angles of propagation indicate the nonreciprocal wave nature. In this work, all the dependences have been obtained using computer calculations and the ferromagnet parameters are taken to be typical for iron–yttrium garnet.

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of 2D ferromagnetic (FM) films on a ferroelectric (FE) substrate with a periodic structure. The two-dimensional Frenkel–Kontorova (FK) potential simulates the substrate effect on the film. The substrate potential corresponds to a cubic crystal lattice. The Ising model and the Wolf cluster algorithm are used to describe the magnetic behavior of a FM film. The effect of an electric field on a FE substrate leads to its deformation, which is uniform and manifests itself in a period change of the substrate potential. Computer simulation shows that substrate deformations lead to a decrease in the FM film Curie temperature. If the substrate deformations exceed 5%, the film deformations become inhomogeneous. In addition, we derive the dependence of film magnetization on the external electric field.

Biochar has been extensively used in ferrous metallurgy in recent years as it has comparable metallurgical properties to coke and coal, showing great potential for reduction of the production cost of iron and steel with enhanced quality and for promotion of environmental protection. This article reviewed the main applications of biochar in the iron and steel industry, including its use in coking, iron ore sintering, production of metallized pellets, blast furnace ironmaking, and electric arc furnace steelmaking. The challenges of using biochar and corresponding promising measures were also discussed for sustainable development of the industry.

In the present work we theoretically investigated the excitation of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in deformed graphene by attenuated total reflection method. We considered the Otto geometry for SPPs excitation in graphene. Efficiency of SPPs excitation strongly depends on the SPPs propagation direction. The frequency and the incident angle of the most effective excitation of SPPs strongly depend on the polarization of the incident light. The formation of the substrate surface potential based on the Lennard-Jones two-particle potential is investigated in this paper. A simple atom’s square lattice on the substrate surface is considered. The periodic potential of the substrate atoms is decomposed into a Fourier series. The amplitude ratio for different frequencies has been examined numerically. The substrate potential is approximated with high accuracy by the Frenkel–Kontorova potential at most parameter values. There is a field of parameters in which the term plays a significant role, with a period half as long as the period of the substrate atoms. The ground state of the monoatomic film is modeled on the substrate potential. The film may be in both crystalline and amorphous phases. The transition to the amorphous phase is associated with a change in the landscape of the substrate potential. There are introduced order parameters for structural phase transition in the thin film. When changing the parameters of the substrate, the order parameter experiences a jump when changing the phase of the film.

Monitoring the distribution of vehicle exhaust emissions within the city is a very challenging problem since it is affected by many complex factors, such as spatial-temporal correlation and the other environment conditions. In addition, the technology of using sensors to directly monitor vehicle exhaust emissions is still in the initial stage, and it is hard to implement direct monitoring in a large area. Thus, we use the existing environmental theory to measure the distribution of vehicle exhaust emissions in cities by traffic volume. In this paper, the problem we need to solve is how to use the data of sparse monitoring stations and inherent traffic network to infer the spatial-temporal distribution of traffic volume. In order to solve this problem, we propose a graph convolutional network model to extract the characteristics of traffic data and other features. We have done a lot of experiments on real traffic data sets. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than the existing methods.

Forecasting of air pollutant concentration, which is influenced by air pollution accumulation, traffic flow and industrial emissions, has attracted extensive attention for decades. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal attention convolutional long short term memory neural networks (Attention-CNN-LSTM) for air pollutant concentration forecasting. Firstly, we analyze the Granger causalities between different stations and establish a hyperparametric Gaussian vector weight function to determine spatial autocorrelation variables, which is used as part of the input feature. Secondly, convolutional neural networks (CNN) is employed to extract the temporal dependence and spatial correlation of the input, while feature maps and channels are weighted by attention mechanism, so as to improve the effectiveness of the features. Finally, a depth long short term memory (LSTM) based time series predictor is established for learning the long-term and short-term dependence of pollutant concentration. In order to reduce the effect of diverse complex factors on LSTM, inherent features are extracted from historical air pollutant concentration data meteorological data and timestamp information are incorporated into the proposed model. Extensive experiments were performed using the Attention-CNNLSTM, autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), support vector regression (SVR), traditional LSTM and CNN, respectively. The results demonstrated that the feasibility and practicability of Attention-CNN-LSTM on estimating CO and NO concentration.

In order to address solving these issues, the German-Russian Astroparticle Data Life Cycle Initiative (GRADLCI) was created. In addition, we support activities for communicating our research field to the public. The approaches proposed by the project are based on the concept of data life cycle, which assumes a particular pipeline of data curation used for every unit of the data from the moment of its retrieval or creation through the stages of data preprocessing, analysis, publishing and archival. The movement towards unified data curation schemes is essential to increase the benefits gained in the analysis of geographically distributed or content-diverse data. Within the project, an infrastructure for effective astroparticle data curation and online analysis was developed. International audience; In this Letter, a fundamentally new concept of realization of hyperbolic plasmonic metasurfaces by anisotropic gain–loss competition is proposed, and the possibility of highly directional propagation and amplification of surface plasmon polaritons is predicted. A simple realistic configuration of such a metasurface represents the periodic array of lossy metallic slabs embedded in the gain matrix. Our results may pave the way for numerous applications ranging from integrated and highly directional quantum light emitters to nonlinear-optical frequency converters.

The paper considers the problem of searching for the source of a non-stationary physical eld. We assume that the use of swarm algorithms may be applicable in this case. A hybrid of the Whale Optimization Algorithm and Grey Wolf Optimizer is proposed in this paper. The algorithm has several advantages over its origins: a more precise solution of the optimization problem for low-dimensional functions and a higher convergence rate of the first iterations. Two modications were made to adapt the algorithm to the requirements of the problem. The proposed algorithm is used as a basis for a control strategy for a group of autonomous underwater vehicles. As a result, in the vast number of cases, the group can find the source within the given number of search iterations.

International audience; We perform a theoretical investigation of the magnetization switching in polycrystalline Ni nanoparticles induced by ultrashort pulses of surface acoustic waves via magnetoelastic interactions. In our numerical simulations, a Ni nanoparticle is modeled as an ellipsoidal disk deposited on a dielectric substrate. The in-plane external magnetic field breaks the symmetry and allows us to adjust the height of the energy barrier between two metastable magnetization states of the free-energy density and dramatically lower the amplitude of elastic strain pulses required for magnetization switching. The switching threshold is shown to depend on the duration of an acoustic pulse, the magnetic shape anisotropy of an elliptical nanoparticle, the amplitude of the external magnetic field, and the magnetostriction coefficient. We introduce the magnetoelastic switching diagram, allowing for the simultaneous visualization of the switching threshold and its characteristic timescale as a function of various physical parameters.
