1. The Progress in the Novel Pediatric Rotary Blood Pump Sputnik Development

Abstract

In this work, the study results of an implantable pediatric rotary blood pump (PRBP) are presented. They show the results of the numerical simulation of fluid flow rates in the pump. The determination method of the backflows and stagnation regions is represented. The operating points corresponding to fluid flow rates of 1, 3, and 5 L/min for 75-80 mm Hg pressure head are investigated. The study results have shown that use of the pump in the 1 L/min operating point can potentially lead to the appearance of backflows and stagnation regions. In the case of using pumps in fluid flow rates ranging from 3 to 5 L/min, the number of stagnation regions decreases and the fluid flow rate changes marginally. Using the pump in this flow rate range is considered judicious. The study shows an increase in shear stress with an increase in fluid flow rates, while there is no increase in shear stress above the critical condition of 150 Pa (which does not allow us to reliably speak about the increased risk of blood cell damage). The aim of this work was to design, prototype, and study interaction of the Sputnik PRBP with the cardiovascular system. A three-dimensional model of Sputnik PRBP was designed with the following geometrical specifications: flow unit length of 51.5 mm, flow unit diameter of 10 mm, and spacing between the rotor and housing of 0.1 mm. Abstract

In 1761, the Russian polymath Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov (1711-1765) discovered the atmosphere of Venus during its transit over the Sun's disc. In this paper we report on experimental reenactments of Lomonosov's discovery with antique refractors during the transit of Venus June 5-6, 2012. We conclude that Lomonosov's telescope was fully adequate to the task of detecting the arc of light around Venus off the Sun's disc during ingress or egress if proper experimental techniques as described by Lomonosov in his 1761 report are employed., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Preliminary results on e + e − → 3 π , 4 π , ω π 0 , η π + π − , p p ¯ , n n ¯ cross sections obtained with SND detector at VEPP-2000 collider are reported. The data were collected in 2010–2011 in the energy range 2 E = 1.0 – 2.0 GeV .

Abstract

The idea of round-beam collision was proposed more than twenty years ago for the Novosibirsk Phi-factory design [V.V. Danilov et al., in Proc of the EPAC 1996, Sitges, vol. 2, p. 1149]. It requires equal emittances, equal small fractional tunes, equal beta functions at the IP, no betatron coupling in the collider arcs. Such an approach results in conservation of the longitudinal component of angular momentum. As a consequence, it yields an enhancement of dynamical stability, even with nonlinear effects from the beam-beam force taken into account. The Round Beam Concept (RBC) was realized at the electron-positron collider VEPP-2000 and successfully tested at the energy of 510 MeV [D.E. Berkaev et al., in Proc. of the EPAC 2008, Genoa, p. 956]. Despite the low energy, a high single-bunch luminosity of 10 31 cm − 2 s − 1 was achieved together with a maximum tune shift as high as 0.1. At present the work is in progress to increase the energy of the collider to explore the range between 500 MeV and 1 GeV in collision.

Abstract

Results of the first measurements of the cross sections for the e + e − → p p ¯ and e + e − → n n ¯ with the SND detector are presented. The analysis is based on data with integrated luminosity of 2.8 pb − 1 , collected in 2011 by the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 e + e − collider in the energy range above nucleon production threshold.

Abstract

The cross section of the process e+e−→π+π−π0 has been measured in the c.m. energy range 984–1060 MeV with the CMD-2 detector at the VEPP-2M collider. The obtained value of Br(ϕ→e+e−)Br(ϕ→π+π−π0)=(4.51±0.16±0.11)×10−5 is in good agreement with the previous measurements and has the best accuracy. Analysis of the Dalitz plot was performed. The contributions of the dominant ϕ→ρπ mechanism as well as of a small direct ϕ→3π amplitude were determined.

Abstract

Using 3.3 pb−1 of data collected with the CMD-2 detector in the 720–840 MeV c.m. energy range, the branching fraction of the conversion decay ω → π 0 e + e − has been measured: B ( ω → π 0 e + e − ) = ( 8.19 ± 0.71 ± 0.62 ) × 10 −4 . The upper limits for the branching fractions of the following conversion decays have been obtained at the 90% confidence level: B ( ρ → π 0 e + e − ) 1.6 × 10 −5 , B ( ρ → η e + e − ) 0.7 × 10 −5 and B ( ω → η e + e − ) 1.1 × 10 −5 .

Abstract

The cross section of the process e + e − → ωπ 0 → π 0 π 0 γ has been measured in the c.m. energy range 920–1380 MeV with the CMD-2 detector. Its energy dependence is well described by the interference of the ρ (770) and ρ (1450) mesons decaying to ωπ 0 . Upper limits for the cross sections of the direct processes e + e − → π 0 π 0 γ , ηπ 0 γ have been set.

Abstract

The cross sections of the e+e−→π+π−π +π−, e+e−→π+π−π0π 0, and e+e−→ωπ→ π+π−π 0π0 processes, as well as the e+e−→π+π−π0π0 process with subtracted contribution of the ωπ intermediate state, are measured in experiments with a spherical neutral detector on the VEPP-2M collider in the energy range 0.98–1.38 GeV. About 41 000 events of the e+e−→π+π−π+π − process and more than 54 000 events of the e+e−→π+π −π0π0 process have been selected in experiment. The statistical error in determining the cross section is 2–20%, while the systematic error is 7 and 8%.

Abstract

The cross section of the process e + e − → ηγ has been measured in the 600–1380 MeV c.m. energy range with the CMD-2 detector. The following branching ratios have been determined: B ( ρ → ηγ )=(3.28±0.37±0.23)×10 −4 , B ( ω → ηγ )=(5.10±0.72±0.34)×10 −4 , B ( φ → ηγ )=(1.287±0.013±0.063)×10 −2 . Evidence for the ρ (1450)→ ηγ decay has been obtained for the first time.

Abstract

Using 15.1 pb −1 of data collected by CMD-2 in the φ -meson energy range, the branching ratios of the following conversion decays have been measured: B ( φ → ηe + e − )=(1.14±0.10±0.06)×10 −4 , B ( η → e + e − γ )=(7.10±0.64±0.46)×10 −3 , B ( η → π + π − e + e − )=(3.7 +2.5 −1.8 ±0.3)×10 −4 . The upper limits for the following rare conversion decays have been obtained at the 90% confidence level: B ( φ → ημ + μ − ) −6 , B ( η → e + e − e + e − ) −5 .

Abstract

The process e+e-->mu+mu- has been studied by SND detector at VEPP-2M e+e- collider in the phi(1020)-resonance energy region. The measured effective phi meson leptonic branching ratio: B(phi->l+l-)=sqrt{B(phi->e+e-)*B(phi->mu+mu-)}=(2.89+-0.10+-0.06)*10^{-4} agrees well with the PDG value B(phi->e+e-)=(2.91+-0.07)*10^{-4} confirming mu-e universality. Without additional assumption of mu-e universality the branching ratio B(phi->mu+mu-)=(2.87+-0.20+-0.14)*10^{-4} was obtained., RevTeX, 5 pages, 3 figures. To be published in Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

Using 11.6 pb −1 of data collected in the energy range 0.864-1.06 GeV by CMD-2 at VEPP-2M, the rare decay mode φ → η ′ γ was observed via the decay chain η ′→ π + π − η , η → π + π − π 0 or η → π + π − γ . The following branching ratio was obtained: Br(φ→η′γ)= 4.9 +2.2 −1.8 ±0.6 ×10 −5 .

Abstract

Using 11.6 pb −1 of data collected in the energy range 0.984–1.06GeV by CMD-2 at VEPP-2M, the cross section of the reaction e + e − →π + π − π + π − hasbeen studied. For the firsttime an interference patternwas observed in the energy dependence of the cross section near theφ meson. The branching ratio of the φ → π + π − π + π − decay doublesuppressed by the G-parity and OZI rule is measuredBr(φ → π + π − π + π − ) = (3.93 ±1.74 ±2.14) ·10 −6 .The upper limits have been placed for the decays φ → π + π − π + π − π 0 and φ → ηπ + π − Br(φ → π + π − π + π − π 0 ) < 4.6 ·10 −6 90%CL,Br(φ → ηπ + π − ) < 1.8 ·10 −5 90%CL. 1 Introduction Production of four pions in e + e − annihilation is now well studied in the c.m.energy range 1.05 to 2.5 GeV (see [ 1] and references therein). Abstract

The process e+e−→π+π−π+π−π0 has been studied in the center of mass energy range 1280 – 1380 MeV using 3.0 pb−1 of data collected with the CMD-2 detector in Novosibirsk. Analysis shows that the cross section of the five pion production is dominated by the contributions of the ηπ+π− and ωπ+π− intermediate states.

About 300 000 e + e − → φ → K 0 L K 0 S events in the center of mass energy range from 984 to 1040 MeV were used for the measurement of the φ meson parameters. The following results have been obtained: σ 0 =(1367±15±21) nb, m φ =(1019.504±0.011±0.033) MeV/c 2 , Γ φ =(4.477±0.036±0.022) MeV, Γ e + e − · B ( φ → K 0 L K 0 S )=(4.364±0.048±0.065)·10 −4 MeV.

Abstract

A new measurement of the rare decay φ → η ′ γ performed with the CMD-2 detector at the VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk is described. Of the data sample corresponding to the integrated luminosity of 14.5 pb −1 , twenty one events have been selected in the mode η ′→ π + π − η , η → γγ . The following branching ratio was obtained: B( φ → η ′ γ )=(8.2 +2.1 −1.9 ±1.1)·10 −5 .

Abstract

Using 3.07 pb −1 of data collected in the energy range 0.60–0.97 GeV by CMD-2, about 150 events of the process e + e − → π + π − π + π − have been selected. The energy dependence of the cross section agrees with the assumption of the a 1 (1260) π intermediate state which is dominant above 1 GeV. For the first time π + π − π + π − events are observed at the ρ meson energy. Under the assumption that all these events come from the ρ meson decay, the value of the cross section at the ρ meson peak corresponds to the following decay width: Γ(ρ 0 →π + π − π + π − )=(2.8±1.4±0.5) keV or to the branching ratio B(ρ 0 →π + π − π + π − )=(1.8±0.9±0.3)·10 −5 .

Abstract

Radiative decays of the φ meson have been studied using a data sample of about 20 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. From selected e + e − → π + π − γ events the φ → π + π − γ decay has been observed for the first time. Under the assumption that the intermediate f 0 (980) γ state dominates in the φ → π + π − γ decay, the corresponding branching ratio is Br ( φ → f 0 (980) γ )=(1.93±0.46±0.50)×10 −4 . Selected e + e − → μ + μ − γ events were used to obtain Br ( φ → μ + μ − γ )=(1.43±0.45±0.14)×10 −5 for E γ >20 MeV. Using the same data sample, upper limits at 90% CL have been obtained for the C-violating decay of the φ : Br ( φ → ργ ) −5 ; and for the P- and CP-violating decay of the η : Br ( η → π + π − ) −4 .

In order to carry out electron scattering experiments with longitudinally polarized electrons, a `Siberian Snake’ comprising superconducting solenoids and skew quadrupoles was installed in the 900 MeV electron storage ring `AmPS'. In this paper the basic optics of this novel design is discussed and first experimental results are reported.

Abstract

A study of the φ → π + π − π 0 decay mode has been performed using a data sample of about 2.0 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. The following parameters of the φ -meson have been measured: Br ( φ → π + π − π 0 )=0.145±0.009±0.003 and δ φ − ω =162±17°. The analysis of the Dalitz plot showed the dominance of the φ → ρπ intermediate mechanism, the limits for the ratio of the direct amplitude of φ →3 π to that of φ → ρπ are −0.16 a 1 φ → π + π − η and direct φ → ργγ have been found for the first time: Br ( φ → π + π − η ) −4 and Br ( φ → ργγ ) −4 at 90% C.L.

Abstract

A search for φ radiative decays has been performed using a data sample of about 2.0 million φ decays collected by the CMD-2 detector at VEPP-2M collider in Novosibirsk. From the selected e + e − → π + π − γ events the following results were obtained: B( φ → f 0 (980) γ ) −4 for destructive and B( φ → f 0 (980) γ ) −4 for constructive interference with the Bremsstrahlung process respectively, B( φ → γ → π + π − γ ) −5 for E γ >20 MeV, B( φ → ργ ) −4 . From the selected e + e − → μ + μ − γ events B( φ → μ + μ − γ )=(2.3±1.0)×10 −5 has been obtained for E γ >20 MeV. The upper limit on the P,CP-violating decay η → π + π − has also been placed: B( η → π + π − ) −4 . All upper limits are at 90% C.L.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Magnetic Detector (CMD-2) and Spherical Neutral Detector (SND) operated at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider in the c.m. energy range 360-1380 MeV. The total integrated luminosity above 60 pb–1 has been collected by both detectors. The cross sections of hadronic production have been measured with high precision. New results for the light vector meson parameters and rare decay mode were obtained. Abstract

Results of the measurement of the φ meson parameters with the general purpose detector CMD-2 at the upgraded e + e − collider VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk are presented. This is the first measurement of the four major φ decay modes in a single e + e − experiment. The results based on about 55,600 identified hadronic events are consistent with previous measurements, and have precision comparable to the current world average.

Abstract

Thin carbon foils are used as strippers for charge exchange injection into high intensity proton rings. However, the stripping foils become radioactive and produce uncontrolled beam loss, which is one of the main factors limiting beam power in high intensity proton rings. Recently, we presented a scheme for laser stripping an H- beam for the Spallation Neutron Source ring. First, H- atoms are converted to H0 by a magnetic field, then H0 atoms are excited from the ground state to the upper levels by a laser, and the excited states are converted to protons by a second magnetic field. In this paper we report on the first successful proof-of-principle demonstration of this scheme to give high efficiency (around 90%) conversion of H- beam into protons at SNS in Oak Ridge. In addition, future plans on building a practical laser stripping device are discussed.

This paper describes dynamic aperture limitation of VEPP-2M in round beam operation due to chromaticity correction sextupoles and a way of lattice optimisation. First order canonical perturbation theory is used to estimate influence of sextupoles on dynamic aperture. The estimates are compared with tracking results.

Abstract

The cross section of the process $e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ was measured in the Spherical Neutral Detector experiment at the VEPP-2M collider in the energy region $\sqrt[]{s} = 980 \div 1380$ MeV. The measured cross section, together with the $e^+e^-\to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\omega\pi^+\pi^-$ cross sections obtained in other experiments, was analyzed in the framework of the generalized vector meson dominance model. It was found that the experimental data can be described by a sum of $\omega$, $\phi$ mesons and two $\omega^\prime$ and $\omega^{\prime\prime}$ resonances contributions, with masses $m_{\omega^\prime}\sim 1490$,$m_{\omega^{\prime\prime}}\sim 1790$ MeV and widths $\Gamma_{\omega^\prime}\sim 1210$, $\Gamma_{\omega^{\prime\prime}}\sim 560$ MeV. The analysis of the $\pi^+\pi^-$ invariant mass spectra in the energy region $\sqrt[]{s}$ from 1100 to 1380 MeV has shown that for their descriptionone should take into account the $e^+e^-\to\omega\pi^0\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ mechanism also. The phase between the amplitudes corresponding to the $e^+e^-\to\omega\pi$ and $e^+e^-\to\rho\pi$ intermediate states was measured for the first time. The value of the phase is close to zero and depends on energy.

Abstract

The review of experimental results obtained with SND detector at VEPP-2M $e^+e^-$ collider in the energy region $\sqrt[]{s}=0.36$ -- 1.38 GeV is given. The presented results include the following items: studies of the light vector mesons radiative decays, OZI-rule and G-parity suppressed $\phi$-meson rare decays, $\phi$-meson parameters measurements, studies of $e^+e^-\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ process dynamics, $\eta$ and $K_S$ mesons rare decays, $\eta$ and $\phi$ mesons conversion decays, and study of the $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Magnetic Detector (CMD‐2) and main it’s parameters are shortly described. The results for the cross sections of e+e− annihilation into hadrons are presented in the c.m. energy range from 0.37 to 1.39 GeV. The total integrated luminosity of about 31 pb−1 has been collected. The new results for the ρ and ω meson parameters were obtained. The pion form factor was determinated with a 0.6% systematic uncertainty. The major decay modes of the φ meson as well as multihadron final states have been studied in a broad energy range.

Abstract

Analytic calculation and numerical simulations reveal a multiline structure in the spectrum of coherent dipole oscillations in the colliding beam system due to coupled synchrobetatron beam-beam modes. The model employed in the analysis involves linearization of the beam-beam kick and takes into account the fact that the length of the colliding bunches is finite. In the present paper, we discuss the behavior of the synchrobetatron beam-beam modes, obtained both analytically and numerically, and compare it with the experimental results for the VEPP-2M collider. A particular case of the betatron tune close to the half-integer resonance is considered on the basis of the presented models.

Abstract

Abstract

We report on first measurements with polarized electrons stored in a medium-energy ring and with a polarized internal target. Polarized electrons were injected at 442 MeV (653 MeV), and a partial (full) Siberian snake was employed to preserve the polarization. Longitudinal polarization at the interaction point and polarization lifetime of the stored electrons were determined with laser backscattering. Spin observables were measured for electrodisintegration of polarized He-3, with simultaneous detection of scattered electrons, protons, neutrons, deuterons, and He-3 nuclei, over a large phase space.

Abstract

We report on the results of studies of the longitudinal electron polarization in the AmPS storage ring at NIKHEF. The ring was operated using a partial Siberian snake at the first magic energy, and a full Siberian snake between 440 MeV and 720 MeV. We have investigated the effect of high beam currents in the ring, and found that some of the electron polarization is lost if the beam current becomes larger than ≈120 mA.

Results of the SND experiment at the VEPP-2M e+ e- collider on the QED processes e+ e- --> e+ e- gamma and e+ e- --> e+ e- gamma gamma with production at large angles are presented. Abstract

The decay $K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu$ has been observed by the CMD-2 detector at the e^+e^- collider VEPP-2M at Novosibirsk. Of 6 million produced $K_L^0K_S^0$ pairs, $75 \pm 13$ events of the $K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu$ decay were selected. The corresponding branching ratio is $B(K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu)=(7.2 \pm 1.4)\times10^{-4}$. This result is consistent with the evaluation of $B(K_S^0 \to \pi e \nu)$ from the $K_L^0$ semileptonic rate and $K_S^0$ lifetime assuming $\Delta S=\Delta Q$ ., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, LaTex2e. Abstract

First results of the study of the process e+e- \to 4\pi by the CMD-2 collaboration at VEPP-2M are presented for the energy range 1.05--1.38 GeV. Using an integrated luminosity of 5.8 pb^{-1}, energy dependence of the processes e+e- \to \pi^+\pi^- 2\pi^0 and e+e- \to 2\pi^+ 2\pi^- has been measured. Analysis of the differential distributions demonstrates the dominance of the a_1\pi and \omega\pi intermediate states. Abstract

The experiments carried out with the SND detector at VEPP-2M e+e− collider are described. The total integrated luminosity, collected in the energy range around φ(1020) peak is about 4 pb−1 and in the energy range 2E=1040–1400 MeV—6.5 pb−1. Preliminary results are presented for φ(1020) rare decays, including φ→η′γ,ωπo,πoπoγ,ηπoγ, and for η(550) decays η→e+e−,2πo.

Abstract

The general purpose detector CMD-2 at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider at Novosibirsk has collected about 11 pb−1 of integrated luminosity in the center-of-mass energy range from 0.36 up to 1.38 GeV. Data in the ρ-meson energy range from 0.61 to 0.96 GeV have been analysed and preliminary results on the e+e−→π+π− cross-section in this energy range are presented.
