ALMA has been operating since 2011, but has not yet been populated with the full suite of intended frequency bands. In particular, ALMA Band 2 (67-90 GHz) is the final band in the original ALMA band definition to be approved for production. We aim to produce a wideband, tuneable, sideband-separating receiver with 28 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth per polarisation operating in the sky frequency range 67-116 GHz. Our design anticipates new ALMA requirements following the recommendations in the 2030 ALMA Development Roadmap. The cryogenic cartridge is designed to be compatible with the ALMA Band 2 cartridge slot, where the coldest components -- the feedhorns, orthomode transducers, and cryogenic low noise amplifiers -- operate at a temperature of 15 K. We use multiple simulation methods and tools to optimise our designs for both the passive optics and the active components. The cryogenic cartridge interfaces with a room temperature cartridge hosting the local oscillator (LO) and the downconverter module. This warm cartridge is largely based on GaAs semiconductor technology and is optimised to match the cryogenic receiver bandwidth with the required instantaneous LO tuning range. Our collaboration has designed, fabricated, and tested multiple technical solutions for each of the components, producing a state-of-the-art receiver covering the full ALMA Band 2 & 3 atmospheric window. The receiver is suitable for deployment on ALMA in the coming years, and is capable of dual-polarisation, sideband-separating observations in intermediate frequency bands spanning 4-18 GHz, for a total of 28 GHz on-sky bandwidth per polarisation channel. We conclude that the 67-116 GHz wideband implementation for ALMA Band 2 is now feasible, and this receiver is a compelling instrumental upgrade that will enhance observational capabilities and scientific reach., 23 pages, accepted for publication in A&A on 20 Dec 2019. Context: We describe the new SEPIA (Swedish-ESO PI Instrument for APEX) receiver, which was designed and built by the Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD), at Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) in collaboration with ESO. It was installed and commissioned at the APEX telescope during 2015 with an ALMA Band 5 receiver channel and updated with a new frequency channel (ALMA Band 9) in February 2016. Aims: This manuscript aims to provide, for observers who use the SEPIA receiver, a reference in terms of the hardware description, optics and performance as well as the commissioning results. Methods: Out of three available receiver cartridge positions in SEPIA, the two current frequency channels, corresponding to ALMA Band 5, the RF band 158--211 GHz, and Band 9, the RF band 600--722 GHz, provide state-of-the-art dual polarization receivers. The Band 5 frequency channel uses 2SB SIS mixers with an average SSB noise temperature around 45K with IF (intermediate frequency) band 4--8 GHz for each sideband providing total 4x4 GHz IF band. The Band 9 frequency channel uses DSB SIS mixers with a noise temperature of 75--125K with IF band 4--12 GHz for each polarization. We present performance of the first ALMA Band 5 production cartridge, covering frequencies from 163 to 211 GHz. Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) Band 5 is a dual polarization, sideband separation (2SB) receiver based on all Niobium (Nb) superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junction mixers, providing 16 GHz of instantaneous RF bandwidth for astronomy observations. The 2SB mixer for each polarization employs a quadrature configuration. The sideband separation occurs at the output of the IF hybrid that has integrated bias-T for biasing the mixers, and is produced using superconducting thin-film technology. Experimental verification of the Band 5 cold cartridge performed together with warm cartridge assembly, confirms that the system noise temperature is below 45 K over most of the RF band, which is less than 5 photon noise (5 hf/k). This is to our knowledge, the best results reported at these frequencies. The measurement of the sideband rejection indicates that the sideband rejection is better than 10 dB over 90% of the observational band.

We describe the design, performance, and commissioning results for the new ALMA Band 5 receiver channel, 163–211 GHz, which is in the final stage of full deployment and expected to be available for observations in 2018. This manuscript provides the description of the new ALMA Band 5 receiver cartridge and serves as a reference for observers using the ALMA Band 5 receiver for observations. At the time of writing this paper, the ALMA Band 5 Production Consortium consisting of NOVA Instrumentation group, based in Groningen, NL, and GARD in Sweden have produced and delivered to ALMA Observatory over 60 receiver cartridges. All 60 cartridges fulfil the new more stringent specifications for Band 5 and demonstrate excellent noise temperatures, typically below 45 K single sideband (SSB) at 4 K detector physical temperature and below 35 K SSB at 3.5 K (typical for operation at the ALMA Frontend), providing the average sideband rejection better than 15 dB, and the integrated cross-polarization level better than –25 dB. The 70 warm cartridge assemblies, hosting Band 5 local oscillator and DC bias electronics, have been produced and delivered to ALMA by NRAO. The commissioning results confirm the excellent performance of the receivers.

In this paper, we report about the development, fabrication, and characterization of a balanced waveguide hot electron bolometer (HEB) receiver for the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment telescope covering the frequency band of 1.25-1.39 THz. The receiver uses a quadrature balanced scheme and two HEB mixers, fabricated from 4- to 5-nm-thick NbN film deposited on crystalline quartz substrate with an MgO buffer layer in between. We employed a novel micromachining method to produce all-metal waveguide parts at submicrometer accuracy (the main-mode waveguide dimensions are 90 times 180 mum ). We present details on the mixer design and measurement results, including receiver noise performance, stability and ldquofirst-lightrdquo at the telescope site. The receiver yields a double-sideband noise temperature averaged over the RF band below 1200 K, and outstanding stability with a spectroscopic Allan time more than 200 s.

Aims. In March 2008, the APEX facility instrument was installed on the telescope at the site of Lliano Chajnantor in northern Chile. The main objective of the paper is to introduce the new instrument to the radio astronomical community. It describes the hardware configuration and presents some initial results from the on-sky commissioning. Methods. The heterodyne instrument covers frequencies between 211 GHz and 1390 GHz divided into four bands. The first three bands are sideband-separating mixers operating in a single sideband mode and based on superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions. The fourth band is a hot-electron bolometer, waveguide balanced mixer. All bands are integrated in a closedcycle temperature-stabilized cryostat and are cooled to 4 K. Results. We present results from noise temperature, sideband separation ratios, beam, and stability measurements performed on the telescope as a part of the receiver technical commissioning. Examples of broad extragalactic lines are also included.

Aims. The new APEX telescope, located on Llano Chajnantor in Northern Chile, will have high resolution spectroscopic instruments covering the wavelength region from 0.20 to 1.30 mm (210-1500 GHz). Methods. In May 2005, the first facility receiver for the band 0.79-1.07 mm (279-381 GHz) was installed together with backends providing down to 60 kHz spectral resolution. This instrument that operates in double sideband mode uses superconducting tunnel junctions (SIS) as mixing elements operating at 4 K to achieve close to quantum-limited noise performances. The receiver is cooled by a closed-cycle cooling machine that allows continuous operation. The receiver design minimizes moving parts and is fully operated by remote to improve its reliability and the ease of use. Results. The double sideband (DSB) receiver temperatures are in the range 50-70 K, which typically results in a DSB system noise temperature of about 100 K in excellent weather conditions and between 100-200 K in good weather conditions.

We present the final results of the development and characterization of the sideband separating superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer for the APEX telescope band 1 (211-275 GHz). The sideband separation is achieved by using a quadrature scheme where the radio frequency (RF) and a local oscillator (LO) power are applied to two identical double sideband SIS mixers. All mixer components, including the LO and RF distribution circuitry, are integrated into a single mixer block. To achieve a compact design we developed a superconducting Lange coupler, based on Nb thin film, which is used as an intermediate frequency hybrid. Typical single sideband noise temperature of 100 K and sideband rejection ratio of about 12 dB and are measured.

This paper presents the results of development and tests of a sideband separating heterodyne receiver for the 85-115 GHz band with superconducting tunnel junctions (SIS) as frequency down converters. Sideband separation is achieved by using a quadrature scheme where two identical mixer junctions are pumped by a local oscillator (LO) with 90/spl deg/ phase difference. We used an innovative mixer layout where the quadrature scheme is implemented using waveguide-based and integrated on-chip components. We employed an additional pair of SIS junctions as terminations for LO-injection directional couplers.

ALMA, Atacama Large Millimetre Array, covers the frequency band from 30 GHz to 960 GHz in ten separate frequency bands. We present here the design and performance of the ALMA Band 5 receiver cartridge that covers 163–211 GHz. The Band 5 receiver shows the state-of-the-art performance with the noise temperature below 65K (SSB) and sideband rejection above 12 dB over 80% of the RF band.

The goal of this project is to build a 3 mm SIS multi-beam (matrix) receiver for the 22-m radio telescope of the Crimean Astrophysical observatory. This project was launched in collaboration with Group for Advanced Receiver Development (GARD), Chalmers University (Sweden). The receiver employs compact DSB SIS mixers, designed by GARD for matrix receiver applications (Fig. 1). It shows good stability and provides receiver DSB noise temperature better than 50K in the frequency range 85–110 GHz. Broadband impedance transformation of the SIS junction allows covering working frequency band with a fixed backshort position.

A new receiver for the Onsala 20 m antenna with the possibility of being equipped with 3 mm and 4 mm bands has been built and the 3 mm channel has been commissioned during the Spring 2014. For single-dish operation, the receiver uses an innovative on-source/off-source optical switch. In combination with additional optical components and within the same optical layout, the switch provides two calibration loads (for the 3 mm and 4 mm channels), sideband rejection measurement, and tuning possibilities. The optical layout of the receiver employs all cold (4 K) offset elliptical mirrors for both channels, whereas the on-off switch employs flat mirrors only. The 3 mm channel employs a sideband separation (2SB) dual polarization receiver with orthomode transducer (OMT), 4-8 GHz intermediate frequency (IF), x? 2pol x? upper and lower sidebands (USB? +? LSB). The cryostat has four optical windows made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) with anti-reflection corrugations, two for the signal and two for each frequency band cold load. The cryostat uses a two-stage cryocooler produced by Sumitomo HI? RDK? 408D2 with anti-vibration suspension of the cold-head to minimize impact of the vibrations on the receiver stability. The local oscillator (LO) system is based on a Gunn oscillator with aphase lock loop (PLL) and four mechanical tuners for broadband operation, providing independently tunable LO power for each polarization. This paper provides a technical description of the receiver and its technology and could be useful for instrumentation engineers and observers using the Onsala 20 m telescope.

In this paper, we describe a novel vector measurement system for the characterization of Gaussian beams and present test results for mm-wave, 211-275 GHz, receiver optics alignment. The measurement setup allows a simpler design without any PLLs and employs a combination of a single frequency source, comb-generator, and direct multiplication LO and signal sources. The system takes advantage of different harmonics to generate the required RF and LO signals yielding the desired IF frequency while obtaining perfect phase-coherence and initial phase-noise cancellation. One of the additional advantages of the suggested measuring scheme is that it allows such design that it has the potential to cover different mm and sub-mm bands by only replacing two filters and the LO multiplication unit. For example, we plan to use the same setup, with mentioned modifications, for the frequency bands 275-370 GHz and 385-500 GHz.

APEX, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment, is collaboration between Max Planck Institut fur Radioastronomie (MPIfR) with Astronomisches Institut Ruhr Universitat Bochum, Onsala Space Observatory and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The telescope was supplied by VERTEX Antennentechnik in Duisburg, Germany, and is a 12 m antenna with 15 μm rms surface accuracy operating at the Atacama Desert Llano Chajnantor, in the Chilean Andes at 5100 m altitude. APEX heterodyne single pixel facility receiver are placed in the telescope Nasmyth cabin A. The receivers are coupled to the antenna via relay optics providing possibility to operate either one of the two different PI-type instruments or a multi-channel facility heterodyne receiver to cover 211 - 1500 GHz frequency range. In this report, we present the optical design for APEX single-pixel facility heterodyne receiver providing frequency independent illumination of the secondary for all the receiver channels. We present design of the two-channel facility receiver APEX A, installed and operating since June 2005, and of the coming 6-channel APEX facility receiver. The report includes a brief review of the mixer technology development status for APEX Band 1, 211 - 270 GHz, using sideband separation technology (2SB), Band 2, 270 - 370 GHz, 2SB, Band 3, 385 - 500 GHz, 2SB, and Band T2, 1250 - 1390 GHz, HEB waveguide balanced mixer, those on the development at Onsala Space Observatory. We present description of the receiver control system and example observation of APEX 2a receiver.

The Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) is a 12 m antenna operating at the Atacama Desert on the Chilean Andes at about 5000 m altitude. APEX would be equipped with a suit of single-pixel heterodyne receivers covering 211 - 1500 GHz frequency range. We present here a design of a sideband-separating superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixer for the APEX, receiver Band 3, operating in 385 - 500 GHz band. The receiver uses quadrature scheme with the RF signal passing via a 90-degree waveguide 3 dB hybrid and the LO is divided by a waveguide E-plane Y-junction. The outputs of the waveguide hybrid are coupled to the mixer SIS junctions through an E-probe with integrated bias-T. For the LO coupler, conventional branch waveguide couplers are difficult to manufacture at this high frequency with required accuracy as the branch waveguides become extremely narrow. In order to solve this problem, we propose an on-chip LO injection, where the LO coupler is integrated onto the mixer chip and fabricated together with the SIS junction and the tuning circuitry. The on-chip LO coupler is made of superconducting lines, which gives almost a lossless solution and provides fabrication accuracy better than 0.5 μm by using optical lithography only. Furthermore, the mixer design includes a novel component, an ellipse termination for the idle LO port, made of thin-film resistive material with sheet resistance equal to the transmission line characteristic impedance, which gives very broadband performance using extremely compact area.

APEX, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment, has been successfully commissioned and is in operation now. This novel submillimeter telescope is located at 5107 m altitude on Llano de Chajnantor in the Chilean High Andes, on what is considered one of the world's outstanding sites for submillimeter astronomy. The primary reflector with 12 m diameter has been carefully adjusted by means of holography. Its surface smoothness of 17-18 mu m makes APEX suitable for observations up to 200 mu m, through all atmospheric submm windows accessible from the ground.

We present results of the development and measurements of a heterodyne sideband separating SIS mixer for 85-115 GHz band. The sideband separation is achieved by using a quadrature scheme where a local oscillator (LO) pumps two identical mixer junctions with 90° phase difference. A key component in the mixer is a waveguide to microstrip double probe transition used as a power divider to split the input RF signal and to provide transition from waveguide to microstrip line. The double probe transition enables the integration of all mixer components on a single compact substrate. The design also involves coupled lines directional couplers to introduce the LO power to the mixer junctions. An additional pair of SIS junctions is used to provide termination loads for the idle ports of the couplers. Several mixer chips were tested and similar and consistent performance was obtained. The best single sideband noise temperature is below 40 K with IF bandwidth 3.4-4.6 GHz. The sideband suppression ratio is better than 12 dB for both sidebands across the entire RF band. The mixer was also successfully tested with 4-8 GHz IF band. In this paper we present complete mixer characterization data.

APEX, the Atacama PAthflnder Experiment (APEX) Telescope, is a partnership between Max Planck Institut fur Radioastronomie (in collaboration with Astronomisches Institut Ruhr Universitat Bochum (AIRUB)), Onsala Space Observatory and the European Southern Observatory. The telescope antenna, supplied by VERTEX Antennentechnik, is a 12 m antenna with a 17 mum rms surface accuracy operating at the Atacama Desert in the Chilean Andes at a 5100 m altitude. The APEX heterodyne facility receiver is placed in the telescope Nasmyth Cabin A. The receivers are coupled to the antenna via relay optics allowing the operation of two different Pi-type instruments and a 6-channel facility heterodyne receiver to cover approximately 210 - 1500 GHz frequency range while providing frequency independent illumination of the secondary. In this report, we present details on the optics for the APEX facility heterodyne receiver and details of its design. The report includes a very brief review of the APEX Band 1, 211 - 270 GHz, Band 2, 270 - 370 GHz, Band 3, 385 - 500 GHz, all based on sideband separation SIS mixer technology and Band T2, 1250 - 1390 GHz, a balanced waveguide HEB mixer, all developed by GARD.

In this paper, we present the design and verification of the optics of the Swedish Heterodyne Facility Instrument (SHeFI) receiver installed in the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope during spring 2008. SHeFI is located in the Nasmyth instrumentation Cabin A (NCA). The receiver has been designed to have 6 frequency channels, of which four receiver channels have been built, and characterized: 211-275 GHz(Band 1), 275-370 GHz (Band 2), 385-500 GHz (Band 3), and 1250-1390 GHz (Band T2). Bands 1, 2, and T2 are installed at the telescope and are currently in operation. The optical design is driven by the requirement of frequency independent illumination of the secondary with -12 dB edge taper for each frequency channel and the limitation (beam clearance through the Nasmyth tube and the elevation encoder) imposed by the receiver position in the NCA. This paper describes the design approach, optimization, and verification of the optical system, coupling each individual receiving beam to the common optics of the telescope.
