We apply a methodology to build a sample of extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) using integral field spectroscopy data. In this work we follow the spectroscopic criteria corresponding for EELG selection and use the MUSE Hubble Ultra-Deep field survey, which includes the deepest spectroscopic survey ever performed. Objects in the primary (extended) sample were detected requiring a rest-frame equivalent width EWo $\geqslant$ 300A (200A $\leq$ EWo $\leq$ 300A) in any of the emission lines of [OII]$\lambda\lambda$3726,29, [OIII]$\lambda\lambda$5007,4959, or H$\alpha$. A detailed closer inspection of the spectra of the candidates selected has been performed on a one by one basis, in order to confirm their classification. For this sample, the line fluxes, physical properties and chemical abundances of the EELGs have been derived as well as their spatially resolved structure and kinematics. Four (five) of the galaxies in the primary (extended) sample, $\sim$57$\%$ ($\sim$83$\%$), were spatially resolved. Three (none) of them present a clear pattern compatible with rotation. We have shown how our entire EELGs sample share the same loci defined by high-redshift galaxies (z $\approx$ 6-8) for the mass-metallicity relation, illustrating their role as local analogs., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables. Outflows are believed to be ubiquitous in all AGNs, although their presence in low luminosity AGNs, in particular, for LINERs, has only started to be explored. Their properties (geometry, mass and energetics) are still far from being properly characterised. We use integral field spectroscopic data from the MEGARA instrument, at GTC, to analyse a small sample of nine LINERs, candidates of hosting ionised gas outflows. We aim to study the main emission lines in the optical to identify their properties and physical origin. We obtained data cubes at the lowest (R$\sim$6000) and highest (R$\sim$20000) spectral resolution of MEGARA. We modelled and subtracted the stellar continuum to obtain the ionised gas contribution, and then fitted the emission lines to extract their kinematics (velocity and velocity dispersion). We identified outflows as a secondary component in the emission lines. The primary component of the emission lines was typically associated to gas in the galactic disc. For some objects, there is an enhanced-$\sigma$ region co-spatial with the secondary component. We associated it to turbulent gas produced due to the interaction with the outflows. We find signatures of outflows in six LINERs, with mass outflow rates ranging from 0.004 to 0.4 M$_{sun}$yr$^{-1}$ and energy rates from $\sim$10$^{38}$ to $\sim$10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Their mean electronic density is 600cm$^{-3}$, extending to distances of $\sim$400 pc at an (absolute) velocity of $\sim$340 km s$^{-1}$ (on average). They tend to be compact and unresolved, although for some sources they are extended with a bubble-like morphology. Our results confirm the existence of outflows in the best LINER candidates identified using previous long-slit spectroscopic and imaging data. These outflows do not follow the scaling relations obtained for more luminous AGNs. For some objects we discuss jets as the main drivers of the outflows, Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures. Green Pea galaxies are remarkable for their intense star formation and serve as a window into the early universe. In our study, we used integral field spectroscopy to examine 24 of these galaxies in the optical spectrum. We focused on the interaction between their ionized interstellar medium and the star formation processes within them. Our research generated spatial maps of emission lines and other properties like ionization structures and chemical conditions. These maps showed that areas with higher levels of excitation are usually located where starbursts are occurring. Continuum maps displayed more intricate structures than emission line maps and hinted at low brightness ionized gas in the galaxies' outer regions. We also analyzed integrated spectra from selected areas within these galaxies to derive physical properties like electron densities and temperatures. In some galaxies, we were able to determine metallicity levels. Our observations revealed the presence of high-ionizing lines in three galaxies, two of which had extremely high rates of star formation. Our findings provide valuable insights into the properties and star-forming processes in Green Pea galaxies, contributing to our broader understanding of galactic evolution in the early universe.

We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic study for the metal poor HII galaxy J084220+115000 using MEGARA Integral Field Unit observations at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. We estimated the gas metallicity using the direct method for oxygen, nitrogen and helium and found a mean value of 12+$\log$(O/H)=$8.03\pm$0.06, and integrated electron density and temperature of $\sim161$ cm$^{-3}$ and $\sim15400$ K, respectively. The metallicity distribution shows a large range of $\Delta$(O/H) = 0.72 dex between the minimum and maximum (7.69$\pm$0.06 and 8.42$\pm$0.05) values, unusual in a dwarf star-forming galaxy. We derived an integrated $\log$(N/O) ratio of $-1.51\pm0.05$ and found that both N/O and O/H correspond to a primary production of metals. Spatially resolved maps indicate that the gas appears to be photoionized by massive stars according to the diagnostic line ratios. Between the possible mechanisms to explain the starburst activity and the large variation of oxygen abundance in this galaxy, our data support a possible scenario where we are witnessing an ongoing interaction triggering multiple star-forming regions localized in two dominant clumps., Comment: 24 pages, 26 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The main interest of the Science Team for the exploitation of the MEGARA instrument at the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC hereafter) is devoted to the study of nearby galaxies, with focus on the research of the history of star formation, and chemical and kinematical properties of disc systems. We refer to this project as MEGADES: MEGARA Galaxy Discs Evolution Survey. The initial goal of MEGADES is to provide a detailed study of the inner regions of nearby disc galaxies, both in terms of their spectrophotometric and chemical evolution, and their dynamical characterisation, by disentangling the contribution of in-situ and ex-situ processes to the history of star formation and effective chemical enrichment of these regions. In addition, the dynamical analysis of these inner regions naturally includes the identification and characterization of galactic winds potentially present in these regions. At a later stage, we will extend this study further out in galactocentric distance. The first stage of this project encompasses the analysis of the central regions of a total of 43 nearby galaxies observed with the MEGARA Integral Field Unit for 114 hours, including both Guaranteed Time and Open Time observations. In this work we study the stellar mass -- metallicity relation (MZR) of an extended sample of star-forming galaxies in the local Universe and its possible dependence with the star formation rate (SFR). A sample of $\sim$195000 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) star-forming galaxies has been selected up to z=0.22 with the aim of analysing the behaviour of the relation of MZR with respect to SFR and taking into account the age of their stellar populations. For this sample we have obtained, for the first time, aperture corrected oxygen and nitrogen-to-oxygen abundances (O/H and N/O, respectively) and SFR using the empirical prescriptions from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. To perform this study we make use also of the stellar mass of the galaxies and the parameter Dn(4000) as a proxy of the age of the stellar population. We derive a robust MZR locus, which is found to be fully consistent with the "anchoring" points of a selected set of well studied nearby galaxies with a direct derivation of the chemical abundance. A complex relation between MZR and SFR across the whole range of galaxy mass and metallicity has been observed, where the slope changes seen in the O/H -- SFR plane present a pattern which seems to be tuned to the galaxies' stellar age, and therefore, stellar age has to be taken into account in the stellar mass -- metallicity -- SFR relation. In order to provide an answer to the question of whether or not the MZR depends on the SFR it is essential to take into account the age of the stellar populations of galaxies. A strong dependence between the MZR and SFR is observed mainly for star-forming galaxies with strong SFR values and low Dn(4000). We describe the observations of the low-metallicity nearby galaxy AGC198691 (Leoncino dwarf) obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the instrument MEGARA at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. The observations cover the wavelength ranges 4304 - 5198 A and 6098 - 7306 A with a resolving power R ~ 6000. We present 2D maps of the ionized gas, deriving the extension of the HII region and gas kinematics from the observed emission lines. We have not found any evidence of recent gas infall or loss of metals by means of outflows. This result is supported by the closed-box model predictions, consistent with the oxygen abundance found by other authors in this galaxy and points towards Leoncino being a genuine XMD galaxy. We present for the first time spatially resolved spectroscopy allowing the detailed study of a star forming region. We use PopStar+Cloudy models to simulate the emission-line spectrum. We find that the central emission line spectrum can be explained by a single young ionizing cluster with an age ~ 3.5 +/- 0.5Myr and a stellar mass of about 2000 solar masses. However, the radial profiles of [OIII]5007 A and the Balmer lines in emission demand photoionization by clusters of different ages between 3.5 and 6.5Myr that might respond either to the evolution of a single cluster evolving along the cooling time of the nebula (about 3Myr at the metallicity of Leoncino, Z ~ 0.0004) or to mass segregation of the cluster, being both scenarios consistent with the observed equivalent widths of the Balmer lines, Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, Accepted in MNRAS on November 6, 2021

Context. We aim to determine the capabilities of the MEGARA@GTC instrument integral-field unit to study stellar populations and exploit its combination of high spectral (R \sim 6,000, 12,000 and 20,000) and spatial (0.62") resolutions within its 12.5"x11.3" field of view. Aims. We pursue to establish a systematic method through which we can determine the properties of the stellar populations in the observations made with MEGARA, more specifically within the MEGADES legacy project and, for this paper, those of the stellar populations of NGC 7025. Methods. We use MEGARA observations of galaxy NGC 7025. We apply different approaches to estimate the properties of the stellar populations with the highest possible certainty. Numerous tests were also performed to check the reliability of the study. Results. All the studies we conduct (both full spectral fitting and absorption line indices) on the stellar populations of NGC 7025 indicate that the stars that form its bulge have supersolar metallicity and considerably old ages (\sim 10 Gyr), in general. We determined that the bulge of NGC 7025 has a mild negative mass-weighted age gradient using three different combinations of MEGARA spectral setups. Regarding its more detailed star formation history, our results indicate that, besides a rather constant star formation at early epochs, a peak in formation history of the stars in the bulge is also found 3.5-4.5 Gyr ago, partly explaining the mass-weighted age gradients measured. Conclusions. The scenario presented in NGC 7025 is that of an isolated galaxy under secular evolution that about 3.5-4.5 Gyr ago likely experimented a minor merger (mass ratio 1/10) that induced an increase in star formation and also perturbed the morphology of its outer disc. Based on SITELLE spectroscopy, we studied the ionised gas emission for the 175 H$\alpha$ emission regions in the Stephan's Quintet (SQ). A detailed analysis is performed of the star formation rate (SFR), oxygen abundance (O/H), and nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratio (N/O) of the SQ regions, to explore the provenance and evolution of this complex structure. According to the BPT diagram, we found 91 HII, 17 composite, and 7 active galactic nucleus-like regions in SQ. Several regions are compatible with fast shocks models without a precursor for solar metallicity and low density (n=0.1 cm$^{-3}$), with velocities between 175 - 300 km s$^{-1}$. We derived the total SFR in SQ (log(SFR/M$_\odot\,yr^{-1}$=0.496); starburst A and B provide 28% and 9% of the total SFR, and 45% comes from the regions with a radial velocity lower than 6160 km s$^{-1}$. For this reason, we assume that the material prior to the collision with the new intruder (NI) does not show a high SFR, and therefore SQ was apparently quenched. When considering the integrated SFR for the whole SQ and the NI, we found that both zones have a SFR consistent with those obtained in the SDSS star-forming galaxies. At least two chemically different gas components cohabit in SQ where, on average, the regions with high radial velocities (v$>$6160 km s$^{-1}$) have lower values of O/H and N/O than those with low radial velocities (v$\leq$6160 km s$^{-1}$). The values found for the line ratios, O/H, and N/O for the southern debris region and the northernmost tidal tail, are compatible with regions belonging to the outer part of the galaxies. We highlight the presence of inner-outer variation for O/H and some emission line ratios along the NI strands and the young tidal tail south strand. Here we report the first spatially resolved spectroscopic study for the galaxy PHL293B using the high-resolution GTC/MEGARA IFU. PHL293B is a local, extremely metal-poor, high ionization galaxy. This makes PHL 293B an excellent analogue for galaxies in the early Universe. The MEGARA aperture (~12.5''x 11.3'') covers the entire PHL 293B main body and its far-reaching ionized gas. We created and discussed maps of all relevant emission lines, line ratios and physical-chemical properties of the ionized ISM. The narrow emission gas appears to be ionized mainly by massive stars according to the observed diganostic line ratios, regardless of the position across the MEGARA aperture. We detected low intensity broad emission components and blueshifted absorptions in the Balmer lines (H$\alpha$,H$\beta$) which are located in the brightest zone of the galaxy ISM. A chemically homogeneity, across hundreds of parsecs, is observed in O/H. We take the oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H)=7.64 $\pm$ 0.06 derived from the PHL293B integrated spectrum as the representative metallicity for the galaxy. Our IFU data reveal for the first time that the nebular HeII4686 emission from PHL 293B is spatially extended and coincident with the ionizing stellar cluster, and allow us to compute its absolute HeII ionizing photon flux. Wolf-Rayet bumps are not detected excluding therefore Wolf-Rayet stars as the main HeII excitation source. Star-forming galaxies with nebular HeII emission contain very energetic ionizing sources of radiation, which can be considered as analogs to the major contributors of the reionization of the Universe in early epochs. It is therefore of great importance to provide a reliable absolute scale for the equivalent effective temperature (T*) for these sources. We study a sample of local (z< 0.2) star-forming galaxies showing optical nebular HeII emission using the so-called softness diagrams, involving emission lines of two elements in two consecutive stages of ionization (e.g., [SII]/[SIII] vs. [OII]/[OIII]). We use for the first time the HeI/heII ratio in these diagrams in order to explore the higher range of T* expected in these objects.We build grids of photoionization models covering different black-body temperatures, model cluster atmospheres, and density-bounded geometries to explain the conditions observed in the sample. We verified that the use of the softness diagrams including the emission-line ratio HeI/HeII combined with black-body photoionization models can provide an absolute scale of T* for these objects. The application of a Bayesian-like code indicates T* in the range 50-80 kK for the sample of galaxies, with a mean value higher than 60 kK. The average of these high temperature values can only be reproduced using cluster model populations with nearly metal-free stars, although such ionizing sources cannot explain either the highest T* values, beyond 1 sigma, or the dispersion observed in the softness diagrams. According to our photoionization models, most sample galaxies could be affected to some extent by ionizing photon leaking, presenting a mean photon absorption fraction of 26% or higher depending on the metallicity assumed for the ionizing cluster., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We here report the detection of extended HeII4686 nebular emission in the central region of NGC1569 using the integral field spectrograph MEGARA at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias. The observations cover a Field of View (FoV) of 12.5 arcsec x 11.3 arcsec at seeing-limited spatial resolution of ~15 pc and at a spectral resolution of R=6000 in the wavelength range 4330--5200 Angstrom. The emission extends over a semi-circular arc of ~40 pc width and ~150 pc diameter around the super star cluster A (SSC-A). The Av derived using Balmer decrement varies from the Galactic value of 1.6 mag to a maximum of ~4.5 mag, with a mean value of 2.65+/-0.60 mag. We infer 124+/-11 Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in SSC-A using the HeII4686 broad feature and Av=2.3 mag. The He+ ionizing photon rate from these WR stars is sufficient to explain the luminosity of the HeII4686 nebula. The observationally-determined total He+ and H0 ionizing photon rates, their ratio, and the observed number of WR stars in SSC-A are all consistent with the predictions of simple stellar population models at an age of 4.0+/-0.5 Myr, and mass of (5.5+/-0.5)x10^5 Msun. Our observations reinforce the absence of WR stars in SSC-B, the second most massive cluster in the FoV. None of the other locations in our FoV where HeII4686 emission has been reported from narrow-band imaging observations contain WR stars., Comment: 20 pages. Accepted in MNRAS

Using new VLT/XShooter spectral observations we analyse the physical properties of five z~0.3-0.4 confirmed LyC leakers. Strong resonant MgII 2796,2803 emission lines (I(2796,2803)/I(Hbeta)=10-38 per cent) and non-resonant FeII* 2612,2626 emission lines are observed in spectra of five and three galaxies, respectively. We find high electron densities Ne~400cm-3, significantly higher than in typical low-z, but comparable to those measured in z~2-3 star-forming galaxies. The galaxies have a mean value of logN/O=-1.16, close to the maximum values found for star-forming (SF) galaxies in the metallicity range of 12+logO/H=7.7-8.1. All 11 low-z LyC emitting galaxies found by Izotov et al. (2016, 2018), including the ones considered in the present study, are characterised by high EW(Hbeta)~200-400A, high ionisation parameter (log(U)=-2.5 to -1.7), high average ionising photon production efficiency \xi= 10^{25.54} Hz erg-1 and hard ionising radiation. On the BPT diagram we find the same offset of our leakers from low-$z$ main-sequence SFGs as that for local analogues of LBGs and extreme SF galaxies at z~2-3. We confirm the effectiveness of the HeI emission lines diagnostics proposed by Izotov et al. (2017) in searching for LyC leaker candidates and find that their intensity ratios correspond to those in a median with low neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)=10^{17}-5x10^{17} cm-2 that permit leakage of LyC radiation, likely due to their density-bounded HII regions., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will soon start to scan thousands of square degrees of the northern extragalactic sky with a unique set of $56$ optical filters from a dedicated $2.55$m telescope, JST, at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Before the arrival of the final instrument (a 1.2 Gpixels, 4.2deg$^2$ field-of-view camera), the JST was equipped with an interim camera (JPAS-Pathfinder), composed of one CCD with a 0.3deg$^2$ field-of-view and resolution of 0.23 arcsec pixel$^{-1}$. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, with the JPAS-Pathfinder camera we carried out a survey on the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip), dubbed miniJPAS. We observed a total of $\sim 1$ deg$^2$, with the $56$ J-PAS filters, which include $54$ narrow band (NB, $\rm{FWHM} \sim 145$Angstrom) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the $u,g,r,i$ SDSS broad band (BB) filters. In this paper we present the miniJPAS data set, the details of the catalogues and data access, and illustrate the scientific potential of our multi-band data. The data surpass the target depths originally planned for J-PAS, reaching $\rm{mag}_{\rm {AB}}$ between $\sim 22$ and $23.5$ for the NB filters and up to $24$ for the BB filters ($5\sigma$ in a $3$~arcsec aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalogue contains more than $64,000$ sources extracted in the $r$ detection band with forced photometry in all other bands. We estimate the catalogue to be complete up to $r=23.6$ for point-like sources and up to $r=22.7$ for extended sources. Photometric redshifts reach subpercent precision for all sources up to $r=22.5$, and a precision of $\sim 0.3$% for about half of the sample. MEGARA (Multi Espectr{\'o}grafo en GTC de Alta Resoluci{\'o}n para Astronom{\'\i}a) is an optical (3650~--~9750\AA), fibre-fed, medium-high spectral resolution (R = 6000, 12000, 20000) instrument for the GTC 10.4m telescope, commissioned in the summer of 2017, and currently in operation. The scientific exploitation of MEGARA demands a stellar-spectra library to interpret galaxy data and to estimate the contribution of the stellar populations. This paper introduces the MEGARA-GTC spectral library, detailing the rationale behind the catalogue building. We present the spectra of 97 stars (21 individual stars and 56 members of the globular cluster M15, being both sub-samples taken during the commissioning runs; and 20 stars from our on-going GTC Open-Time program). The spectra have R~=~20000 in the HR-R and HR-I setups, centred at 6563 and 8633~\AA\ respectively. We describe the procedures to reduce and analyse the data. Then, we determine the best-fitting theoretical models to each spectrum through a $\chi^{2}$ minimisation technique to derive the stellar physical parameters and discuss the results. We have also measured some absorption lines and indices. We present a comprehensive analysis of the multi-phase structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and the stellar kinematics in the edge-on nearby galaxy UGC 10205 using integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data taken with MEGARA at the GTC. We explore both the neutral and the ionized gas phases using the interstellar Na ${\small I}$ D doublet absorption (LR$-$V set-up, R $\sim$ 6000) and the H$\alpha$ emission line (HR$-$R set-up, R $\sim$ 18000), respectively. The high-resolution data show the complexity of the H$\alpha$ emission line profile revealing the detection of up to three kinematically distinct gaseous components. Despite of this fact, a thin disk model is able to reproduce the bulk of the ionized gas motions in the central regions of UGC 10205. The use of asymmetric drift corrections is needed to reconciliate the ionized and the stellar velocity rotation curves. We also report the detection of outflowing neutral gas material blueshifted by $\sim$ 87 km s$^{-1}$. The main physical properties that describe the observed outflow are a total mass M$_{out}$ $=$ (4.55 $\pm$ 0.06) $\times$ 10$^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$ and a cold gas mass outflow rate $\dot{M}$$_{out}$ $=$ 0.78 $\pm$ 0.03 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. This work points out the necessity of exploiting high-resolution IFS data to understand the multi-phase components of the ISM and the multiple kinematical components in the central regions of nearby galaxies., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

Stephan's Quintet (SQ), the prototypical compact group of galaxies in the local Universe, has been observed with the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer SITELLE, attached to the CFHT, to perform a deep search for intergalactic star-forming emission. We present the extended ionised gaseous structures detected and analyse their kinematical properties. The large field of view (11'x11') and the spectral ranges of SITELLE have allowed a thorough study of the entire galaxy system, its interaction history and the main properties of the ionised gas. The observations have revealed complex 3D strands in SQ seen for the first time, as well as the spatially resolved velocity field for a new SQ dwarf galaxy (M82-like) and the detailed spectral map of NGC7320c, confirming its AGN nature. A total of 175 SQ H$\alpha$ emission regions have been found, 22 of which present line profiles with at least two kinematical components. We studied 12 zones and 28 sub-zones in the SQ system to define plausible physical spatial connections between its different parts in the light of the kinematical information gathered. In this respect we have found 5 velocity systems in SQ: i) v=[5600-5900] $km\,s^{-1}$; ii) v=[5900-6100] $km\,s^{-1}$; iii) v=[6100-6600] $km\,s^{-1}$; iv) v=[6600-6800] $km\,s^{-1}$; and v) v=[6800-7000] $km\,s^{-1}$. No gas emission is detected in the old tail, neither near NGC7318A nor in NGC7317, and the connection between NGC7319 north lobe and starburst A cannot be confirmed. Conversely, a clear gaseous bridge has been confirmed both spatially and kinematically between the large-scale shock region and the NGC7319 AGN. Finally, a larger scale, outer rim winding the NGC7318B/A system clockwise north-west to south-east has been highlighted in continuum and in H$\alpha$. SIGNALS, the Star formation, Ionized Gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey, is a large observing program designed to investigate massive star formation and HII regions in a sample of local extended galaxies. The program will use the imaging Fourier transform spectrograph SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Over 355 hours (54.7 nights) have been allocated beginning in fall 2018 for eight consecutive semesters. Once completed, SIGNALS will provide a statistically reliable laboratory to investigate massive star formation, including over 50 000 resolved HII regions : the largest, most complete, and homogeneous database of spectroscopically and spatially resolved extragalactic HII regions ever assembled. For each field observed, three datacubes covering the spectral bands of the filters SN1 (363 -386 nm), SN2 (482 - 513 nm), and SN3 (647 - 685 nm) are gathered. The spectral resolution selected for each spectral band is 1000, 1000, and 5000, respectively. As defined, the project sample will facilitate the study of small-scale nebular physics and many other phenomena linked to star formation at a mean spatial resolution of 20 pc. This survey also has considerable legacy value for additional topics including planetary nebulae, diffuse ionized gas, andsupernova remnants. Asymmetries in HI in galaxies are often caused by the interaction with close companions, making isolated galaxies an ideal framework to study secular evolution. The AMIGA project has demonstrated that isolated galaxies show the lowest level of asymmetry in their HI integrated profiles, yet some present significant asymmetries. CIG 96 (NGC 864) is a representative case reaching a 16% level. Our aim is to investigate the HI asymmetries of this spiral galaxy and what processes have triggered the star-forming regions observed in the XUV pseudoring. We performed deep optical observations at CAHA 1.23m, 2.2m and VST telescopes. We reach surface brightness (SB) limits of mu_2.2m = 27.5 mag arcsec-2 (Cous R) and mu_VST = 28.7mag arcsec-2 (r) that show the XUV pseudoring of the galaxy in detail. Additionally, a wavelet filtering of the HI data cube from our deep observations with E/VLA telescope allowed us to reach a column density of N_HI = 8.9x10^18 cm -2 (5sigma) (28"x28" beam), lower than in any isolated galaxy. We confirm that the HI extends farther than 4xr_25 in all directions. Furthermore, we detect for the first time two gaseous structures (10^6 Msol) in the outskirts. The g-r colour index image from 1.23m shows extremely blue colours in certain regions of the pseudoring where N_HI>8.5x10^20 cm-2 , whereas the rest show red colours. Galactic cirrus contaminate the field, setting an unavoidable detection limit at 28.5mag arcsec-2 (r). We detect no stellar link within 1degx1deg or gaseous link within 40'x40' between CIG 96 and any companion. The isolation criteria rule out interactions with other similar-sized galaxies for at least 2.7Gyr. Using existing stellar evolution models, the age of the pseudoring is estimated at 1Gyr or older. Undetected previously accreted companions and cold gas accretion remain as the main hypothesis to explain the optical pseudoring and HI features of CIG 96., Comment: 23 pages, 18 figures, 4 tables

SBS0335-052E, one of the most metal-poor (Z ~ 3-4% Z$_{\odot}$) HeII-emitter starbursts known in the nearby universe, is studied using optical VLT/MUSE spectroscopic and Chandra X-ray observations. We spatially resolved the spectral map of the nebular HeII$\lambda$4686 emission from which we derived for the first time the total HeII-ionizing energy budget of SBS0335-052E. The nebular HeII line is indicative of a quite hard ionizing spectrum with photon energies > 4 Ryd, and is observed to be more common at high-z than locally. Our study rules out a significant contribution from X-ray sources and shocks to the HeII photoionization budget, indicating that the He$^{+}$ excitation is mainly due to hot stellar continua. We discovered a new WR knot, but we also discard single WR stars as the main responsible for the HeII ionization. By comparing observations with current models, we found that the HeII-ionization budget of SBS0335-052E can only be produced by either single, rotating metal-free stars or a binary population with Z ~ 10$^{-5}$ and a 'top-heavy' IMF. This discrepancy between the metallicity of such stars and that of the HII regions in SBS0335-052E is similar to results obtained by Kehrig et al. (2015) for the very metal-deficient HeII-emitting galaxy IZw18. These results suggest that the HeII ionization is still beyond the capabilities of state-of-the-art models. We estimate the current extinction-corrected H$\alpha$ star formation rate (SFR) of the different morphological components that shape galaxies (bulges, bars, and disks). We use a multi-component photometric decomposition based on SDSS imaging to CALIFA Integral Field Spectroscopy datacubes for a sample of 219 galaxies. This analysis reveals an enhancement of the central SFR and specific SFR (sSFR $=$ SFR/$M_{\star}$) in barred galaxies. Along the Main Sequence, we find more massive galaxies in total have undergone efficient suppression (quenching) of their star formation, in agreement with many studies. We discover that more massive disks have had their star formation quenched as well. We evaluate which mechanisms might be responsible for this quenching process. The presence of type-2 AGNs plays a role at damping the sSFR in bulges and less efficiently in disks. Also, the decrease in the sSFR of the disk component becomes more noticeable for stellar masses around 10$^{10.5}$ M$_{\odot}$; for bulges, it is already present at $\sim$10$^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. The analysis of the line-of-sight stellar velocity dispersions ($\sigma$) for the bulge component and of the corresponding Faber-Jackson relation shows that AGNs tend to have slightly higher $\sigma$ values than star-forming galaxies for the same mass. Finally, the impact of environment is evaluated by means of the projected galaxy density, $\Sigma$$_{5}$. We find that the SFR of both bulges and disks decreases in intermediate-to-high density environments. We present an updated version of the mass--metallicity relation (MZR) using integral field spectroscopy data obtained from 734 galaxies observed by the CALIFA survey. These unparalleled spatially resolved spectroscopic data allow us to determine the metallicity at the same physical scale ($\mathrm{R_{e}}$) for different calibrators. We obtain MZ relations with similar shapes for all calibrators, once the scale factors among them are taken into account. We do not find any significant secondary relation of the MZR with either the star formation rate (SFR) or the specific SFR for any of the calibrators used in this study, based on the analysis of the residuals of the best fitted relation. However we do see a hint for a (s)SFR-dependent deviation of the MZ-relation at low masses (M$<$10$^{9.5}$M$_\odot$), where our sample is not complete. We are thus unable to confirm the results by Mannucci et al. (2010), although we cannot exclude that this result is due to the differences in the analysed datasets. In contrast, our results are inconsistent with the results by Lara-Lopez et al. (2010), and we can exclude the presence of a SFR-Mass-Oxygen abundance Fundamental Plane. These results agree with previous findings suggesting that either (1) the secondary relation with the SFR could be induced by an aperture effect in single fiber/aperture spectroscopic surveys, (2) it could be related to a local effect confined to the central regions of galaxies, or (3) it is just restricted to the low-mass regime, or a combination of the three effects., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publishing in MNRAS

Large area surveys with a high number of galaxies observed have undoubtedly marked a milestone in the understanding of several properties of galaxies, such as star-formation history, morphology, and metallicity. However, in many cases, these surveys provide fluxes from fixed small apertures (e.g. fibre), which cover a scant fraction of the galaxy, compelling us to use aperture corrections to study the global properties of galaxies. In this work, we derive the current total star formation rate (SFR) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) star-forming galaxies, using an empirically based aperture correction of the measured $\rm H\alpha$ flux for the first time, thus minimising the uncertainties associated with reduced apertures. All the $\rm H\alpha$ fluxes have been extinction-corrected using the $\rm H\alpha/H\beta$ ratio free from aperture effects. The total SFR for $\sim$210,000 SDSS star-forming galaxies has been derived applying pure empirical $\rm H\alpha$ and $\rm H\alpha/H\beta$ aperture corrections based on the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. We find that, on average, the aperture-corrected SFR is $\sim$0.65dex higher than the SDSS fibre-based SFR. The relation between the SFR and stellar mass for SDSS star-forming galaxies (SFR--$\rm M_\star$) has been obtained, together with its dependence on extinction and $\rm H\alpha$ equivalent width. We compare our results with those obtained in previous works and examine the behaviour of the derived SFR in six redshift bins, over the redshift range $\rm 0.005 \leq z\leq 0.22$. The SFR--$\rm M_\star$ sequence derived here is in agreement with selected observational studies based on integral field spectroscopy of individual galaxies as well as with the predictions of recent theoretical models of disc galaxies.

The search of extragalactic regions with conspicuous presence of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars outside the Local Group is challenging task due to the difficulties in detecting their faint spectral features. In this exploratory work, we develop a methodology to perform an automated search of WR signatures through a pixel-by-pixel analysis of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data belonging to the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey, CALIFA. This technique allowed us to build the first catalogue of Wolf-Rayet rich regions with spatially-resolved information, allowing to study the properties of these complexes in a 2D context. The detection technique is based on the identification of the blue WR bump (around He II 4686 {\AA}, mainly associated to nitrogen-rich WR stars, WN) and the red WR bump (around C IV 5808 {\AA} and associated to carbon-rich WR stars, WC) using a pixel-by-pixel analysis. We identified 44 WR-rich regions with blue bumps distributed in 25 galaxies of a total of 558. The red WR bump was identified only in 5 of those regions. We found that the majority of the galaxies hosting WR populations in our sample are involved in some kind of interaction process. Half of the host galaxies share some properties with gamma-ray burst (GRB) hosts where WR stars, as potential candidates to being the progenitors of GRBs, are found. We also compared the WR properties derived from the CALIFA data with stellar population synthesis models, and confirm that simple star models are generally not able to reproduce the observations. We conclude that other effects, such as the binary star channel (which could extend the WR phase up to 10 Myr), fast rotation or other physical processes that causes the loss of observed Lyman continuum photons, are very likely affecting the derived WR properties, and hence should be considered when modelling the evolution of massive stars., Comment: 33 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

This paper aims at providing aperture corrections for emission lines in a sample of spiral galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Survey (CALIFA) database. In particular, we explore the behavior of the log([OIII]5007/Hbeta)/([NII]6583/Halpha) (O3N2) and log[NII]6583/Halpha (N2) flux ratios since they are closely connected to different empirical calibrations of the oxygen abundances in star forming galaxies. We compute median growth curves of Halpha, Halpha/Hbeta, O3N2 and N2 up to 2.5R_50 and 1.5 disk R_eff. The growth curves simulate the effect of observing galaxies through apertures of varying radii. The median growth curve of the Halpha/Hbeta ratio monotonically decreases from the center towards larger radii, showing for small apertures a maximum value of ~10% larger than the integrated one. The median growth curve of N2 shows a similar behavior, decreasing from the center towards larger radii. No strong dependence is seen with the inclination, morphological type and stellar mass for these growth curves. Finally, the median growth curve of O3N2 increases monotonically with radius. However, at small radii it shows systematically higher values for galaxies of earlier morphological types and for high stellar mass galaxies. Applying our aperture corrections to a sample of galaxies from the SDSS survey at 0.02<=z<=0.3 shows that the average difference between fiber-based and aperture corrected oxygen abundances, for different galaxy stellar mass and redshift ranges, reaches typically to ~11%, depending on the abundance calibration used. This average difference is found to be systematically biased, though still within the typical uncertainties of oxygen abundances derived from empirical calibrations. Caution must be exercised when using observations of galaxies for small radii (e.g. below 0.5R_eff) given the high dispersion shown around the median growth curves., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a detailed 2D study of the ionized ISM of IZw18 using new PMAS-IFU optical observations. IZw18 is a high-ionization galaxy which is among the most metal-poor starbursts in the local Universe. This makes IZw18 a local benchmark for understanding the properties most closely resembling those prevailing at distant starbursts. Our IFU-aperture (~ 1.4 kpc x 1.4 kpc) samples the entire IZw18 main body and an extended region of its ionized gas. Maps of relevant emission lines and emission line ratios show that higher-excitation gas is preferentially located close to the NW knot and thereabouts. We detect a Wolf-Rayet feature near the NW knot. We derive spatially resolved and integrated physical-chemical properties for the ionized gas in IZw18. We find no dependence between the metallicity-indicator R23 and the ionization parameter (as traced by [OIII]/[OII]) across IZw18. Over ~ 0.30 kpc^2, using the [OIII]4363 line, we compute Te[OIII] values (~ 15000 - 25000 K), and oxygen abundances are derived from the direct determinations of Te[OIII]. More than 70% of the higher-Te[OIII] (> 22000 K) spaxels are HeII4686-emitting spaxels too. From a statistical analysis, we study the presence of variations in the ISM physical-chemical properties. A galaxy-wide homogeneity, across hundreds of parsecs, is seen in O/H. Based on spaxel-by-spaxel measurements, the error-weighted mean of 12 + log(O/H) = 7.11 +/- 0.01 is taken as the representative O/H for IZw18. Aperture effects on the derivation of O/H are discussed. This paper describes the Third Public Data Release (DR3) of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. Science-grade quality data for 667 galaxies are made public, including the 200 galaxies of the Second Public Data Release (DR2). Data were obtained with the integral-field spectrograph PMAS/PPak mounted on the 3.5m telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory. Three different spectral setups are available, i) a low-resolution V500 setup covering the wavelength range 3749-7500 AA (4240-7140 AA unvignetted) with a spectral resolution of 6.0 AA (FWHM), for 646 galaxies, ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the wavelength range 3650-4840 AA (3650-4620 AA unvignetted) with a spectral resolution of 2.3 AA (FWHM), for 484 galaxies, and iii) the combination of the cubes from both setups (called COMBO), with a spectral resolution of 6.0 AA and a wavelength range between 3700-7500 AA (3700-7140 AA unvignetted), for 446 galaxies. The Main Sample, selected and observed according to the CALIFA survey strategy covers a redshift range between 0.005 and 0.03, spans the color-magnitude diagram and probes a wide range of stellar mass, ionization conditions, and morphological types. The Extension Sample covers several types of galaxies that are rare in the overall galaxy population and therefore not numerous or absent in the CALIFA Main Sample. All the cubes in the data release were processed using the latest pipeline, which includes improved versions of the calibration frames and an even further improved im- age reconstruction quality. In total, the third data release contains 1576 datacubes, including ~1.5 million independent spectra. The morphological, spectroscopic and kinematical properties of the warm interstellar medium (wim) in early-type galaxies (ETGs) hold key observational constraints to nuclear activity and the buildup history of these massive, quiescent systems. High-quality integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data with a wide spectral and spatial coverage, such as those from the CALIFA survey, offer an unprecedented opportunity for advancing our understanding of the wim in ETGs. This article centers on a 2D investigation of the wim component in 32 nearby (<~150Mpc) ETGs from CALIFA, complementing a previous 1D analysis of the same sample (Papaderos et al. 2013; P13). We include here H\alpha\ intensity and equivalent width (EW) maps and radial profiles, diagnostic emission-line ratios, besides ionized-gas and stellar kinematics. This study is supplemented by \tau-ratio maps as an efficient means to quantify the role of photoionization by pAGB stars, as compared to other mechanisms (e.g., AGN, low-level star formation). Additionally, we extend the tentative classification proposed in P13 by the type i+, which is assigned to a subset of type i ETGs exhibiting ongoing low-level star-formation (SF) in their periphery. This finding along with faint traces of localized SF in the extranuclear component of several of our sample ETGs points to a non-negligible contribution by OB stars to the total ionizing budget. We also demonstrate that, at the typical emission-line detection threshold of ~2\AA in previous studies, most of the extranuclear wim emission in an ETG may evade detection, which could in turn prompt its classification as an entirely gas-devoid system. Integral field spectroscopy studies based on CALIFA data have recently revealed the presence of ongoing low-level star formation (SF) in the periphery of ~10% of local early-type galaxies (ETGs), witnessing a still ongoing inside-out galaxy growth process. A distinctive property of the nebular component in these ETGs, classified i+, is a two-radial-zone structure, with the inner zone displaying LINER emission with a H\alpha equivalent width EW~1{\AA}, and the outer one (3{\AA}

Based on a combined analysis of SDSS imaging and CALIFA integral field spectroscopy data, we report on the detection of faint (24 < {\mu}$_r$ mag/arcsec$^2$ < 26) star-forming spiral-arm-like features in the periphery of three nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs). These features are of considerable interest because they document the still ongoing inside-out growth of some local ETGs and may add valuable observational insight into the origin and evolution of spiral structure in triaxial stellar systems. A characteristic property of the nebular component in the studied ETGs, classified i+, is a two-radial-zone structure, with the inner zone that displays faint (EW(H\alpha)$\simeq$1{\AA}) low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) properties, and the outer one (3{\AA}

We study, for the first time in a statistically significant and well-defined sample, the relation between the outer-disk ionized-gas metallicity gradients and the presence of breaks in the surface brightness profiles of disk galaxies. SDSS g'- and r'-band surface brightness, (g'- r') color, and ionized-gas oxygen abundance profiles for 324 galaxies within the CALIFA survey are used for this purpose. We perform a detailed light-profile classification finding that 84% of our disks show down- or up-bending profiles (Type II and Type III, respectively) while the remaining 16% are well fitted by one single exponential (Type I). The analysis of the color gradients at both sides of this break shows a U-shaped profile for most Type II galaxies with an average minimum (g'- r') color of ~0.5 mag and a ionized-gas metallicity flattening associated to it only in the case of low-mass galaxies. More massive systems show a rather uniform negative metallicity gradient. The correlation between metallicity flattening and stellar mass results in p-values as low as 0.01. Independently of the mechanism having shaped the outer light profiles of these galaxies, stellar migration or a previous episode of star formation in a shrinking star-forming disk, it is clear that the imprint in their ionized-gas metallicity was different for low- and high-mass Type II galaxies. In the case of Type III disks, a positive correlation between the change in color and abundance gradient is found (the null hypothesis is ruled out with a p-value of 0.02), with the outer disks of Type III galaxies with masses $\leq$10$^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$ showing a weak color reddening or even a bluing. This is interpreted as primarily due to a mass down-sizing effect on the population of Type III galaxies having recently experienced an enhanced inside-out growth., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. The Star Formation Rate (SFR) is one of the main parameters used to analyze the evolution of galaxies through time. The need for recovering the light reprocessed by dust commonly requires the use of low spatial resolution far-infrared data. Recombination-line luminosities provide an alternative, although uncertain dust-extinction corrections based on narrow-band imaging or long-slit spectroscopy have traditionally posed a limit to their applicability. Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) is clearly the way to overcome such limitation. We obtain integrated H{\alpha}, ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR)-based SFR measurements for 272 galaxies from the CALIFA survey at 0.005 < z < 0.03 using single-band and hybrid tracers. We provide updated calibrations, both global and split by properties (including stellar mass and morphological type), referred to H{\alpha}. The extinction-corrected H{\alpha} luminosity agrees with the updated hybrid SFR estimators based on either UV or H{\alpha} plus IR luminosity over the full range of SFRs (0.03-20 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). The coefficient that weights the amount of energy produced by newly-born stars that is reprocessed by dust on the hybrid tracers, a$_{IR}$, shows a large dispersion. However, it does not became increasingly small at high attenuations, as expected if significant highly-obscured H$\alpha$ emission would be missed. Lenticulars, early-type spirals and type-2 AGN host galaxies show smaller coefficients due to the contribution of optical photons and AGN to dust heating. In the Local Universe the H{\alpha} luminosity derived from IFS observations can be used to measure SFR, at least in statistically-significant, optically-selected galaxy samples. This paper characterizes the radial structure of stellar population properties of galaxies in the nearby universe, based on 300 galaxies from the CALIFA survey. The sample covers a wide range of Hubble types, and galaxy stellar mass. We apply the spectral synthesis techniques to recover the stellar mass surface density, stellar extinction, light and mass-weighted ages, and mass-weighted metallicity, for each spatial resolution element in our target galaxies. To study mean trends with overall galaxy properties, the individual radial profiles are stacked in seven bins of galaxy morphology. We confirm that more massive galaxies are more compact, older, more metal rich, and less reddened by dust. Additionally, we find that these trends are preserved spatially with the radial distance to the nucleus. Deviations from these relations appear correlated with Hubble type: earlier types are more compact, older, and more metal rich for a given mass, which evidences that quenching is related to morphology, but not driven by mass. Negative gradients of ages are consistent with an inside-out growth of galaxies, with the largest ages gradients in Sb-Sbc galaxies. Further, the mean stellar ages of disks and bulges are correlated, with disks covering a wider range of ages, and late type spirals hosting younger disks. The gradients in stellar mass surface density depend mostly on stellar mass, in the sense that more massive galaxies are more centrally concentrated. There is a secondary correlation in the sense that at the same mass early type galaxies have steeper gradients. We find mildly negative metallicity gradients, shallower than predicted from models of galaxy evolution in isolation. The largest gradients occur in Sb galaxies. Overall we conclude that quenching processes act in manners that are independent of mass, while metallicity and galaxy structure are influenced by mass-dependent processes., Comment: 42 pages, 27 figures, 3 tables. We present spatially resolved stellar and/or ionized gas kinematic properties for a sample of 103 interacting galaxies, tracing all merger stages: close companions, pairs with morphological signatures of interaction, and coalesced merger remnants. We compare our sample with 80 non-interacting galaxies. We measure for the stellar and the ionized gas components the major (projected) kinematic position angles (PA$_{\mathrm{kin}}$, approaching and receding) directly from the velocity fields with no assumptions on the internal motions. This method allow us to derive the deviations of the kinematic PAs from a straight line ($\delta$PA$_{\mathrm{kin}}$). Around half of the interacting objects show morpho-kinematic PA misalignments that cannot be found in the control sample. Those misalignments are present mostly in galaxies with morphological signatures of interaction. Alignment between the kinematic sides for both samples is similar, with most of the galaxies displaying small misalignments. Radial deviations of the kinematic PA from a straight line in the stellar component measured by $\delta$PA$_{\mathrm{kin}}$ are large for both samples. However, for a large fraction of interacting galaxies the ionized gas $\delta$PA$_{\mathrm{kin}}$ is larger than typical values derived from isolated galaxies (48%), making this parameter a good indicator to trace the impact of interaction and mergers in the internal motions of galaxies. By comparing the stellar and ionized gas kinematic PA, we find that 42% (28/66) of the interacting galaxies have misalignments larger than 16 degrees, compared to 10% from the control sample. Our results show the impact of interactions in the internal structure of galaxies as well as the wide variety of their velocity distributions. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is called to revolutionise essentially all areas of Astrophysics. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be a transformational instrument, and its scientific potential will go beyond the interests of astronomers. Its technological challenges and huge cost requires a multinational effort, and Europe has recognised this by putting the SKA on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). The Spanish SKA White Book is the result of the coordinated effort of 120 astronomers from 40 different research centers. In nature we observe galaxy aggregations that span a wide range of magnitude gaps between the two first-ranked galaxies of a system ($\Delta m_{12}$). There are systems with gaps close to zero (e.g., the Coma cluster), and at the other extreme of the distribution, the largest gaps are found among the so-called fossil systems. Fossil and non-fossil systems could have different galaxy populations that should be reflected in their luminosity functions. In this work we study, for the first time, the dependence of the luminosity function parameters on $\Delta m_{12}$ using data obtained by the fossil group origins (FOGO) project. We constructed a hybrid luminosity function for 102 groups and clusters at $z \le 0.25$. We stacked all the individual luminosity functions, dividing them into bins of $\Delta m_{12}$, and studied their best-fit Schechter parameters. We additionally computed a relative luminosity function, expressed as a function of the central galaxy luminosity, which boosts our capacity to detect differences, especially at the bright end. We find trends as a function of $\Delta m_{12}$ at both the bright and faint ends of the luminosity function. In particular, at the bright end, the larger the magnitude gap, the fainter the characteristic magnitude $M^\ast$. We also find differences at the faint end. In this region, the larger the gap, the flatter the faint-end slope $\alpha$. The differences found at the bright end support a dissipationless, dynamical friction-driven merging model for the growth of the central galaxy in group- and cluster-sized halos. The differences in the faint end cannot be explained by this mechanism. Other processes, such as enhanced tidal disruption due to early infall and/or prevalence of eccentric orbits, may play a role. We use optical integral-field spectroscopic (IFS) data from 103 nearby galaxies at different stages of the merging event, from close pairs to merger remnants provided by the CALIFA survey, to study the impact of the interaction in the specific star formation and oxygen abundance on different galactic scales. To disentangle the effect of the interaction and merger from internal processes, we compared our results with a control sample of 80 non-interacting galaxies. We confirm the moderate enhancement (2-3 times) of specific star formation for interacting galaxies in central regions as reported by previous studies; however, the specific star formation is comparable when observed in extended regions. We find that control and interacting star-forming galaxies have similar oxygen abundances in their central regions, when normalized to their stellar masses. Oxygen abundances of these interacting galaxies seem to decrease compared to the control objects at the large aperture sizes measured in effective radius. Although the enhancement in central star formation and lower metallicities for interacting galaxies have been attributed to tidally induced inflows, our results suggest that other processes such as stellar feedback can contribute to the metal enrichment in interacting galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures. New integral field spectroscopy has been obtained for IZw18, the nearby lowest-metallicity galaxy considered our best local analog of systems forming at high-z. Here we report the spatially resolved spectral map of the nebular HeII4686 emission in IZw18, from which we derived for the first time its total HeII-ionizing flux. Nebular HeII emission implies the existence of a hard radiation field. HeII-emitters are observed to be more frequent among high-z galaxies than for local objects. So investigating the HeII-ionizing source(s) in IZw18 may reveal the ionization processes at high-z. HeII emission in star-forming galaxies, has been suggested to be mainly associated with Wolf-Rayet stars (WRs), but WRs cannot satisfactorily explain the HeII-ionization at all times, in particular at lowest metallicities. Shocks from supernova remnants, or X-ray binaries, have been proposed as additional potential sources of HeII-ionizing photons. Our data indicate that conventional HeII-ionizing sources (WRs, shocks, X-ray binaries) are not sufficient to explain the observed nebular HeII4686 emission in IZw18. We find that the HeII-ionizing radiation expected from models for either low-metallicity super-massive O stars or rotating metal-free stars could account for the HeII-ionization budget measured, while only the latter models could explain the highest values of HeII4686/Hbeta observed. The presence of such peculiar stars in IZw18 is suggestive and further investigation in this regard is needed. The bar pattern speed ($\Omega_{\rm b}$) is defined as the rotational frequency of the bar, and it determines the bar dynamics. Several methods have been proposed for measuring $\Omega_{\rm b}$. The non-parametric method proposed by Tremaine \& Weinberg (1984; TW) and based on stellar kinematics is the most accurate. This method has been applied so far to 17 galaxies, most of them SB0 and SBa types. We have applied the TW method to a new sample of 15 strong and bright barred galaxies, spanning a wide range of morphological types from SB0 to SBbc. Combining our analysis with previous studies, we investigate 32 barred galaxies with their pattern speed measured by the TW method. The resulting total sample of barred galaxies allows us to study the dependence of $\Omega_{\rm b}$ on galaxy properties, such as the Hubble type. We measured $\Omega_{\rm b}$ using the TW method on the stellar velocity maps provided by the integral-field spectroscopy data from the CALIFA survey. Integral-field data solve the problems that long-slit data present when applying the TW method, resulting in the determination of more accurate $\Omega_{\rm b}$. In addition, we have also derived the ratio $\cal{R}$ of the corotation radius to the bar length of the galaxies. According to this parameter, bars can be classified as fast ($\cal{R}$ $< 1.4$) and slow ($\cal{R}$>1.4). For all the galaxies, $\cal{R}$ is compatible within the errors with fast bars. We cannot rule out (at 95$\%$ level) the fast bar solution for any galaxy. We have not observed any significant trend between $\cal{R}$ and the galaxy morphological type. Our results indicate that independent of the Hubble type, bars have been formed and then evolve as fast rotators. Wolf-Rayet (WR) HII galaxies are local metal-poor star-forming galaxies, observed when the most massive stars are evolving from O stars to WR stars, making them template systems to study distant starbursts. We have been performing a program to investigate the interplay between massive stars and gas in WR HII galaxies using IFS. This paper describes the Second Public Data Release (DR2) of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. The data for 200 objects are made public, including the 100 galaxies of the First Public Data Release (DR1). Data were obtained with the integral-field spectrograph PMAS/PPak mounted on the 3.5 m telescope at the Calar Alto observatory. Two different spectral setups are available for each galaxy, (i) a low-resolution V500 setup covering the wavelength range 3745-7500 \AA\ with a spectral resolution of 6.0 \AA\ (FWHM), and (ii) a medium-resolution V1200 setup covering the wavelength range 3650-4840 \AA\ with a spectral resolution of 2.3 \AA\ (FWHM). The sample covers a redshift range between 0.005 and 0.03, with a wide range of properties in the Color-Magnitude diagram, stellar mass, ionization conditions, and morphological types. All released cubes were reduced with the latest pipeline, including improved spectrophotometric calibration, spatial registration and spatial resolution. The spectrophotometric calibration is better than 6% and the median spatial resolution is 2.5". Altogether the second data release contains over 1.5 million spectra. H ii regions in galaxies are the sites of star formation and thus particular places to understand the build-up of stellar mass in the universe. The line ratios of this ionized gas are frequently used to characterize the ionization conditions. We use the Hii regions catalogue from the CALIFA survey (~5000 H ii regions), to explore their distribution across the classical [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [NII]/Halpha diagnostic diagram, and how it depends on the oxygen abundance, ionization parameter, electron density, and dust attenuation. We compared the line ratios with predictions from photoionization models. Finally, we explore the dependences on the properties of the host galaxies, the location within those galaxies and the properties of the underlying stellar population. We found that the location within the BPT diagrams is not totally predicted by photoionization models. Indeed, it depends on the properties of the host galaxies, their galactocentric distances and the properties of the underlying stellar population. These results indicate that although H ii regions are short lived events, they are affected by the total underlying stellar population. One may say that H ii regions keep a memory of the stellar evolution and chemical enrichment that have left an imprint on the both the ionizing stellar population and the ionized gas, Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publishing in A&A

This work provides an overall characterization of the kinematic behavior of the ionized gas of the galaxies included in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral field Area (CALIFA), offering kinematic clues to potential users of this survey for including kinematical criteria for specific studies. From the first 200 galaxies observed by CALIFA, we present the 2D kinematic view of the 177 galaxies satisfying a gas detection threshold. After removing the stellar contribution, we used the cross-correlation technique to obtain the radial velocity of the dominant gaseous component. The main kinematic parameters were directly derived from the radial velocities with no assumptions on the internal motions. Evidence of the presence of several gaseous components with different kinematics were detected by using [OIII] profiles. Most objects in the sample show regular velocity fields, although the ionized-gas kinematics are rarely consistent with simple coplanar circular motions. 35% of the objects present evidence of a displacement between the photometric and kinematic centers larger than the original spaxel radii. Only 17% of the objects in the sample exhibit kinematic lopsidedness when comparing receding and approaching sides of the velocity fields, but most of them are interacting galaxies exhibiting nuclear activity. Early-type galaxies in the sample present clear photometric-kinematic misaligments. There is evidence of asymmetries in the emission line profiles suggesting the presence of kinematically distinct gaseous components at different distances from the nucleus. This work constitutes the first determination of the ionized gas kinematics of the galaxies observed in the CALIFA survey. The derived velocity fields, the reported kinematic peculiarities and the identification of the presence of several gaseous components might be used as additional criteria for selecting galaxies for specific studies., Comment: 38 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables. We describe and discuss the selection procedure and statistical properties of the galaxy sample used by the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Survey (CALIFA), a public legacy survey of 600 galaxies using integral field spectroscopy. The CALIFA "mother sample" was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 photometric catalogue to include all galaxies with an r-band isophotal major axis between 45" and 79.2" and with a redshift 0.005 < z < 0.03. The mother sample contains 939 objects, 600 of which will be observed in the course of the CALIFA survey. The selection of targets for observations is based solely on visibility and thus keeps the statistical properties of the mother sample. By comparison with a large set of SDSS galaxies, we find that the CALIFA sample is representative of galaxies over a luminosity range of -19 > Mr > -23.1 and over a stellar mass range between 10^9.7 and 10^11.4Msun. In particular, within these ranges, the diameter selection does not lead to any significant bias against - or in favour of - intrinsically large or small galaxies. Only below luminosities of Mr = -19 (or stellar masses < 10^9.7Msun) is there a prevalence of galaxies with larger isophotal sizes, especially of nearly edge-on late-type galaxies, but such galaxies form < 10% of the full sample. We estimate volume-corrected distribution functions in luminosities and sizes and show that these are statistically fully compatible with estimates from the full SDSS when accounting for large-scale structure. We also present a number of value-added quantities determined for the galaxies in the CALIFA sample. We explore different ways of characterizing the environments of CALIFA galaxies, finding that the sample covers environmental conditions from the field to genuine clusters. We present 80 stellar and ionised gas velocity maps from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey in order to characterize the kinematic orientation of non-interacting galaxies. The study of galaxies in isolation is a key step towards understanding how fast-external processes, such as major mergers, affect kinematic properties in galaxies. We derived the global and individual (projected approaching and receding sides) kinematic position angles (PAs) for both the stellar and ionised gas line-of-sight velocity distributions. When compared to the photometric PA, we find that morpho-kinematic differences are smaller than 22 degrees in 90% of the sample for both components; internal kinematic misalignments are generally smaller than 16 degrees. We find a tight relation between the global stellar and ionised gas kinematic PA consistent with circular-flow pattern motions in both components. This relation also holds generally in barred galaxies across the bar and galaxy disk scales. Our findings suggest that even in the presence of strong bars, both the stellar and the gaseous components tend to follow the gravitational potential of the disk. (Abridged) Fossil systems are group- or cluster-sized objects whose luminosity is dominated by a very massive central galaxy. In the current cold dark matter scenario, these objects formed hierarchically at an early epoch of the Universe and then slowly evolved until present day. That is the reason why they are called {\it fossils}. We started an extensive observational program to characterize a sample of 34 fossil group candidates spanning a broad range of physical properties. Deep $r-$band images were taken for each candidate and optical spectroscopic observations were obtained for $\sim$ 1200 galaxies. This new dataset was completed with SDSS DR7 archival data to obtain robust cluster membership and global properties of each fossil group candidate. For each system, we recomputed the magnitude gaps between the two brightest galaxies ($\Delta m_{12}$) and the first and fourth ranked galaxies ($\Delta m_{14}$) within 0.5 $R_{{\rm 200}}$. We consider fossil systems those with $\Delta m_{12} \ge 2$ mag or $\Delta m_{14} \ge 2.5$ mag within the errors. We find that 15 candidates turned out to be fossil systems. Their observational properties agree with those of non-fossil systems. Both follow the same correlations, but fossils are always extreme cases. In particular, they host the brightest central galaxies and the fraction of total galaxy light enclosed in the central galaxy is larger in fossil than in non-fossil systems. Finally, we confirm the existence of genuine fossil clusters. Combining our results with others in the literature, we favor the merging scenario in which fossil systems formed due to mergers of $L^\ast$ galaxies. The large magnitude gap is a consequence of the extreme merger ratio within fossil systems and therefore it is an evolutionary effect. This study is part of the FOssil Groups Origin (FOGO) project which aims at carrying out a systematic and multiwavelength study of a large sample of fossil systems. Here we focus on the relation between the optical luminosity (Lopt) and X-ray luminosity (Lx). Out of a sample of 28 candidate fossil systems, we consider a sample of 12 systems whose fossil classification has been confirmed by a companion study. They are compared with the complementary sample of 16 systems whose fossil nature is not confirmed and with a subsample of 102 galaxy systems from the RASS-SDSS galaxy cluster survey.
