Wide bandgap Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology promises to deliver the next generation of power transistors capable of high energy density and compact design integration however, without active monitoring high failing rates are recorded due to its instability to design parameter variations. Moreover, the electromagnetic (EM) radiofrequency (RF) emissions due to GaN power switching require extra design resources. Considering the extensive research area dedicated to galvanic isolated magnetic sensors for GaN wafer monolithic integration with usage in power monitoring, this study investigates the conditions that a Hall sensor is required to meet when operating in close proximity of a GaN transistor. Through considerable experimental testing, it was determined that the sensor requires a magnetic field starting from ±1 mT when interfaced with a microcontroller. Additionally, since the GaN transistor’s EM RF switching noise was one of the most monitored parameters during the experiments, it was discovered that it is proportional to the transistor’s current transfer area whereas its magnitude is due to electrical current required by the load. As a result of these findings, the EM radiated switching noise may apply to all electrical switches and provide a significant advantage when designing for EM compatibility (EMC).

In this paper, a gallium nitride (GaN) magnetic Hall effect current sensor is simulated in 2D and 3D using the TCAD Sentaurus simulation toolbox. The model takes into account the piezoelectric polarization effect and the Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) and Fermi–Dirac statistics for all simulations. The galvanic transport model of TCAD Sentaurus is used to model the Lorentz force and magnetic behaviour of the sensor. The current difference, total current, and sensitivity simulations are systematically calibrated against experimental data. The sensor is optimised using varying geometrical and biasing parameters for various ambient temperatures. This unintentionally doped ungated current sensor has enhanced sensitivity to 16.5 %T−1 when reducing the spacing between the drains to 1 μm and increasing the source to drain spacing to 76 μm. It is demonstrated that the sensitivity degrades at 448 K (S = 12 %T−1), 373 K (S = 14.1 %T−1) compared to 300 K (S = 16.5 %T−1). The simulation results demonstrate a high sensitivity of GaN sensors at elevated temperatures, outperforming silicon counterparts.

Introduction The patient journey for residents of New South Wales (NSW) Australia with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) often involves transfer between hospitals and these can include stays in hospitals in other jurisdictions. Objective To estimate the change in enumeration of STEMI hospitalisations and time to subsequent cardiac procedures for NSW residents using cross-jurisdictional linkage of administrative health data. Methods Records for NSW residents aged 20 years and over admitted to hospitals in NSW and four adjacent jurisdictions (Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria) between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2018 with a principal diagnosis of STEMI were linked with records of the Australian Government Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). The number of STEMI hospitalisations, and rates of angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass graft were compared for residents of different local health districts within NSW with and without inclusion of cross-jurisdictional data. Results Inclusion of cross-jurisdictional hospital and MBS data increased the enumeration of STEMI hospitalisations for NSW residents by 8% (from 15,420 to 16,659) and procedure rates from 85.6% to 88.2%. For NSW residents who lived adjacent to a jurisdictional border, hospitalisation counts increased by up to 210% and procedure rates by up to 70 percentage points. Conclusions Cross-jurisdictional linked hospital data is essential to understand patient journeys of NSW residents who live in border areas and to evaluate adherence to treatment guidelines for STEMI. MBS data are useful where hospital data are not available and for procedures that may be conducted in out-patient settings.

Objectives The BCC project aims to describe the burden of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and access to cardiac procedures and care for New South Wales (NSW), Australia residents. For patients experiencing AMI, particularly ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), timely revascularisation is important to optimise prognosis. Approach The AMI patient journey often involves presentation to the closest appropriate facility and transfers between hospitals, including across jurisdictions. The BCC dataset consists of cross-jurisdictional linked ambulance, emergency, hospital, outpatient, deaths, Medicare and Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme records for residents of NSW. For NSW residents hospitalised for STEMI between 2013 to 2018, we compared the number of STEMI hospitalisations, the proportion of patients receiving revascularisation procedures, and the time to procedures using only NSW records versus records from all jurisdictions and Medicare Benefits Scheme. This dataset will be updated annually. Results The BCC dataset comprises 332 million records, from 18 datasets, across 6 jurisdictions. Compared with NSW hospital data, including data from other jurisdictions increased the ascertainment of STEMI hospitalisations by 8.0% (from 15,420 to 16,659) and procedures by 11.2% (from 13,219 to 14,701) for NSW residents. This increase was greatest for residents living near state borders, increasing the number of STEMI hospitalisations by up to 210% and the percentage receiving procedures by up to 70%. Conclusions Cross-jurisdictional data is essential to understand patient journeys of residents who live in border areas and to evaluate patient care for STEMI and AMI more broadly. The BCC dataset is a vital asset that enables a more comprehensive view of care for AMI than has been possible to date.

Abstract In order to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional protection methods in high‐voltage direct current transmission lines, a deep learning approach is proposed that directly learn the fault conditions based on unsupervised feature extraction to the detection and location decision by leveraging the hidden layer activations of recurrent neural network. The deep‐recurrent neural network boosting with the gated recurrent unit compared with the long short‐term memory unit is used by analysing both the signal presented in time domain and frequency domain. The proposed method is tested based on a modular multilevel converter based four‐terminal high‐voltage direct current system. Various faults under different conditions were simulated against fault resistance, external faults and small disturbance immunity with the validity, and the simulation verified a high accuracy, robustness and fast results because of the utilization of characteristic feature extraction.

Updating the road infrastructure requires the potential mass adoption of the road studs currently used in car detection, speed monitoring, and path marking. Road studs commonly include RF transceivers connecting the buried sensors to an offsite base station for centralized data management. Since traffic monitoring experiments through buried sensors are resource expensive and difficult, the literature detailing it is insufficient and inaccessible due to various strategic reasons. Moreover, as the main RF frequencies adopted for stud communication are either 868/915 MHz or 2.4 GHz, the radio coverage differs, and it is not readily predictable due to the low-power communication in the near proximity of the ground. This work delivers a reference study on low-power RF communication ranging for the two above frequencies up to 60 m. The experimental setup employs successive measurements and repositioning of a base station at three different heights of 0.5, 1 and 1.5 m, and is accompanied by an extensive theoretical analysis of propagation, including line of sight, diffraction, and wall reflection. Enhancing the tutorial value of this work, a correlation analysis using Pearson’s coefficient and root mean square error is performed between the field test and simulation results.

As the RF communication on 18650 Li-ion cell level has not been reported due to its challenges and constrains, in this work, a valid wireless data link is demonstrated in an enclosed empty metal shell at 868 MHz and 2.4 GHz based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. The experimental tests are carried out using two generic unturned radiative structures, a wire loop fitted inside a cell shell, and an open terminal sub miniature version A (SMA), subsequently oriented vertically and horizontally relative to the ground plane. Based on signal strength indicator, bit error rate, and packet error rate, the test characterized a payload of 120 bytes at the highest speed of 150 kbps and 250 kbps supported by the IEEE 802.15.4 for the two communication frequencies. A MATLAB simulation is used in parallel to determine the three-dimensional radiative pattern of the two structures, whereas a three-ray model for multipath range propagation is implemented to complete the empirical experiments. It was demonstrated through testing communication of up to 10 m for both operating frequencies, proving the concept of wireless cell communication within short ranges, an essential feature for monitoring the health of each cell inside future electric vehicles (EVs).

Efficient management through monitoring of Li-ion batteries is critical to the progress of electro-mobility and energy storage globally, since the technology can be hazardous if pushed beyond its safety boundaries. Battery management systems (BMSs) are being actively improved to reduce size, weight, and cost while increasing their capabilities. Using power line communication, wireless monitoring, or hybrid data links are one of the most advanced research directions today. In this work, we propose the use of radio frequency (RF) transceivers as a communication unit that can deliver both wired and wireless services, through their superior analog and digital signal processing capability compared to PLC technology. To validate our approach computational simulation and empirical evaluation was conducted to examine the possibility of using RF transceivers on a direct current (DC) bus for wired BMS. A key advantage of this study is that it proposes a flexible and tested system for communication across a variety of network scenarios, where wireless data links over disrupted connections may be enabled by using this technology in short-range wired modes. This investigation demonstrates that the IEEE 802.15.4-compliant transceivers with operating frequencies of 868 MHz and 2.4 GHz can establish stable data links on a DC bus via capacitive coupling at high data rates.

In anticipation of the hybrid utilisation of the radio frequency (RF) wireless transceiver technology embedded in future smart Li-ion battery cells to deliver hybrid links based on power line communication (PLC) and wireless connections, herein we present an empirical high-frequency investigation of the direct current (DC) bus. The focus is to determine, via statistical tools including correlation coefficient (CC), root mean squared error (RMSE) and feature selective validation (FSV) method, the impedance and signal change impact on a possible communication link when fully charged cells are present or completely missing from the bus. Moreover, to establish if technological differences may be accounted for during the empirical experiments, Li-ion cells from two different manufacturers were selected and connected via three subsequent capacitive couplings of 1 µF, 1 nF and 1 pF. According to a methodical comparison by employing CC, RMSE, and FSV over the measured impedance and signal attenuation, this study has shown that the physical DC network is the dominant impedance at high frequencies and that the signal attenuation on the DC line supports communication in the investigated spectrum. The reported findings are critical for in situ hybrid PLC and wireless communication implementation of BMS for Li-ion systems supported through only one RF transceiver.

Previous research has shown that work–privacy conflict (WPC) is associated with musculoskeletal pain (MSP), but the processes involved are unclear. This study simultaneously tested strain and sleep problems as mediators in three mediation paths (WPC →strain→MSP; WPC →sleep problems→MSP; and WPC →strain→sleep problems→MSP). Total mediation (including all three mediation paths) was expected to be stronger in older compared to younger participants, in participants doing shift work compared to those with regular work time, and in women compared to men. In a representative sample of the Swiss working population (N = 3438), WPC, strain, sleep problems, and MSP were assessed by self-report. Avian eggshells are variedly coloured, yet only two pigments, biliverdin and protoporphyrin IX, are known to contribute to the dramatic diversity of their colours. By contrast, the contributions of structural or other chemical components of the eggshell are poorly understood. For example, unpigmented eggshells, which appear white to the human eye, vary in their ultraviolet (UV) reflectance, which may be detectable by birds. We investigated the proximate mechanisms for the variation in UV-reflectance of unpigmented bird eggshells using spectrophotometry, electron microscopy, chemical analyses, and experimental manipulations. We specifically tested how UV-reflectance is affected by the eggshell cuticle, the outermost layer of most avian eggshells. The chemical dissolution of the outer eggshell layers, including the cuticle, increased UV-reflectance for only eggshells that contained a cuticle. Our findings demonstrate that the outer eggshell layers, including the cuticle, absorb UV-light, probably because they contain higher levels of organic components and other chemicals, such as calcium phosphates, compared to the predominantly calcite-based eggshell matrix. These data highlight the need to examine factors other than the known pigments in studies of avian eggshell colour.

Research on the optical properties of animal integuments, including fur, feather, skin and cuticle, has focussed almost exclusively on animal-visible wavelengths within the narrow range of 300-700 nm. By contrast, the near-infrared (NIR) portion of direct sunlight, spanning 700-2600 nm, has been largely ignored despite its potentially important thermal consequences. We quantified variation in visible and NIR reflectance and transmission for white body contour feathers of 50 bird species, and examined how well they are predicted by feather macro- and micro-structural morphology. Both visible and NIR reflectance of the feathers varied substantially across species. Larger, thicker, and sparser feathers that are characteristic of larger species, and feathers with rounder barbs and more closely spaced barbules, had high average reflectance, particularly within avian-visible wavelengths (300-700 nm). Feathers with rounder barbs and more closely situated barbules also had high average reflectance, particularly for NIR wavelengths. Barb roundness and barbule density were the only predictors of NIR reflectance after accounting for variation in visible reflectance and body size. Our results highlight the potential for adaptive variation in NIR reflectance mediated by feather structure, which may inform the design of functional materials to control light and heat.

In modern life conditions, when emphasis is on environmental protection and sustainable development, fuels produced from biomass are increasingly gaining in importance, and it is necessary to consider the quality of end products obtained from biomass. Based on the existing European standards, collected literature and existing laboratory methods, this paper presents results of testing individual thermal - chemical properties of biomass energy pellets after extrusion and cooling the compressed material. Analysing samples based on standard methods, data were obtained on the basis of which individual thermal-chemical properties of pellets were estimated. Comparing the obtained results with the standards and literature sources, it can be said that moisture content, ash content and calorific values are the most important parameters for quality analysis which decide on applicability and use-value of biomass energy pellets, as biofuel. This paper also shows the impact of biofuels on the quality of environmental protection. The conclusion provides a clear statement of quality of biomass energy pellets.

A modification of the Approximate Internal Modelbased Neural Control (AIMNC), using Multi Layer Neural Network (MLNN) is introduced. A necessary condition that the system provides zero steady-state error in case of the constant reference and constant disturbances is derived. In the considered control strategy only one neural network (NN), which is the neural model of the plant, should be trained off-line. An inverse neural controller can be directly obtained from the neural model without need for a further training. Simulations demonstrate performance improvement of the modified AIMNC strategy. An extension of the modified AIMNC controller for the typical industrial processes is proposed.

This study reviews test results for a biomass-fired hot water boiler with a nominal boiler thermal power of 120 kW. In the experiments, prismatic wheat straw bales were used as biomass. The impact of the quantity (220, 290, 360 and 430 m3 h−1) of inlet air fed to the boiler firebox was continuously monitored. This was to examine the influence of the quantity of inlet air and recirculation (0, 16.5 and 33%) of combustion products on the boiler thermal power and boiler energy efficiency. Thus, the following mathematical models and formulas were presented: correlation between boiler thermal power and bale residence time; bale mass loss during the combustion process; correlation between boiler energy efficiency and bale residence time. Mathematical models were obtained by using experimental data and by applying nonlinear regression analysis. Adjustment evaluation of mathematical models with experimental data was performed based on the determination coefficient, t-test and F-test. Increase the amount of air throughout the firebox produced boiler thermal power increase and bale residence time decrease. It was shown that combustion products recirculation of 16.5% partly improved boiler characteristics, while the recirculation of 33% did not, comparing with the case without recirculation.

The coevolutionary relationships between brood parasites and their hosts are often studied by examining the egg rejection behaviour of host species using artificial eggs. However, the traditional methods for producing artificial eggs out of plasticine, plastic, wood, or plaster-of-Paris are laborious, imprecise, and prone to human error. As an alternative, 3D printing may reduce human error, enable more precise manipulation of egg size and shape, and provide a more accurate and replicable protocol for generating artificial stimuli than traditional methods. However, the usefulness of 3D printing technology for egg rejection research remains to be tested. Here, we applied 3D printing technology to the extensively studied egg rejection behaviour of American robins, Turdus migratorius. Eggs of the robin’s brood parasites, brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater, vary greatly in size and shape, but it is unknown whether host egg rejection decisions differ across this gradient of natural variation. We printed artificial eggs that encompass the natural range of shapes and sizes of cowbird eggs, painted them to resemble either robin or cowbird egg colour, and used them to artificially parasitize nests of breeding wild robins. In line with previous studies, we show that robins accept mimetically coloured and reject non-mimetically coloured artificial eggs. Although we found no evidence that subtle differences in parasitic egg size or shape affect robins’ rejection decisions, 3D printing will provide an opportunity for more extensive experimentation on the potential biological or evolutionary significance of size and shape variation of foreign eggs in rejection decisions. We provide a detailed protocol for generating 3D printed eggs using either personal 3D printers or commercial printing services, and highlight additional potential future applications for this technology in the study of egg rejection.

In the globalized and rapidly evolving work environment, deficiencies in job design are a common reason that employees must sometimes complete tasks that are not directly connected to their occupational role. Individuals with a clear vision of their occupational role and duties in particular, such as psychologists, might consider such tasks as an offense to self. According to the "Stress-as-Offense-to-Self" (SOS) concept, so-called "illegitimate tasks" do not respect a person's occupational identity-threatening the self through disrespect. We investigated perceived appreciation as an underlying mechanism mediating between illegitimate tasks and reduced job satisfaction after one year through three studies conducted in two European countries. Using data from 50 psychologists who graduated from a German university, Study 1 revealed that perceived appreciation explained the relationship between illegitimate tasks and job satisfaction after one year. Studies 2 and 3 confirmed this finding using data from 67 and 183 Swiss employees working in fields of psychology. In particular, illegitimate tasks affected the perception of appreciation immediately and in the long term, which in turn affected the psychologists' job satisfaction (contagion model). Our results illustrate the importance of perceived appreciation as a mechanism that mediates between illegitimate tasks and job satisfaction of psychologists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
