Abstract

The March 2016 eruption of Pavlof Volcano, Alaska, produced an ash plume that caused the cancellation of more than 100 flights in North America. The eruption generated strong tremor that was recorded by seismic and remote low-frequency acoustic (infrasound) stations, including the EarthScope Transportable Array. The relationship between the tremor amplitudes and plume height changes considerably between the waxing and waning portions of the eruption. Similar hysteresis has been observed between seismic river noise and discharge during storms, suggesting that flow and erosional processes in both rivers and volcanoes can produce irreversible structural changes that are detectable in geophysical data. We propose that the time-varying relationship at Pavlof arose from changes in the tremor source related to volcanic vent erosion. This relationship may improve estimates of volcanic emissions and characterization of eruption size and intensity.

Abstract

The 15 January 2022 climactic eruption of Hunga volcano, Tonga, produced an explosion in the atmosphere of a size that has not been documented in the modern geophysical record. The event generated a broad range of atmospheric waves observed globally by various ground-based and spaceborne instrumentation networks. Most prominent is the surface-guided Lamb wave ( ≲ 0.01 Hz), which we observed propagating for four (+three antipodal) passages around the Earth over six days. Based on Lamb wave amplitudes, the climactic Hunga explosion was comparable in size to that of the 1883 Krakatau eruption. The Hunga eruption produced remarkable globally-detected infrasound (0.01–20 Hz), long-range (~10,000 km) audible sound, and ionospheric perturbations. Seismometers worldwide recorded pure seismic and air-to-ground coupled waves. Air-to-sea coupling likely contributed to fast-arriving tsunamis. 31. Modeling Lahar Inundation with the Aid of Historic Flow Deposits at Redoubt Volcano, Cook Inlet, Alaska

Abstract

Redoubt Volcano is a 3108 m tall stratocone located in Cook Inlet, Alaska that explosively erupts roughly every 20 years. The five eruptions since 1900 all share the common characteristic of being accompanied by multiple large to very large lahars (108 to 109 m3), as well as many that are smaller in magnitude (104 to 106 m3). About 35 km from the crater of Redoubt Volcano lies the Drift River Marine Terminal that, if inundated, has the potential to cause an oil spill comparable in size to the Exxon Valdez spill of 1989. Non-Newtonian lahar flows evolve as they move down valley as a result of their bulking and debulking processes. The aim of this project was to model the largest lahars from the three most recent eruptions of Redoubt to better predict the area of inundation during future eruptions. Using GIS and the lahar simulation program Laharz_py, inundation models were created and compared with the known mapped area of post-eruption inundation done by the USGS for the seven most extensively studied lahars spanning the three most recent eruptions (1966-68, 1989-90, and 2009). The input data for these simulations consisted of a ten-meter resolution DEM and estimates of glacial meltwater volume as a measure of initial lahar volume proposed by both Dorava and Meyer (1994) and Waythomas et al. (2013). To capture the specific characteristics of the Redoubt Volcano lahars, a retrospective manipulation of the calibration factors was performed, such as the starting coordinates of the lahars, using the previously mapped areas of inundation. It was found that lahar volumes of approximately 4–5 x 108 m3 were required in order for the lahar run-out to reach the Drift River Marine Terminal. Volumes of this size appear to be consistent with estimates by both Dorava and Meyer (1994) and Waythomas et al. 32. Synthetic Evaluation of Infrasonic Multipole Waveform Inversion

Abstract

Acoustic source inversions estimate the mass flow rate of volcanic explosions or yield of chemical explosions and provide insight into potential source directionality. However, the limitations of applying these methods to complex sources and their ability to resolve a stable solution have not been investigated in detail. We perform synthetic infrasound waveform inversions that use 3‐D Green’s functions for a variety of idealized and realistic deployment scenarios using both a flat plane and Yasur volcano, Vanuatu as examples. We investigate the ability of various scenarios to retrieve the input source functions and relative amplitudes for monopole and multipole (monopole and dipole) inversions. Infrasound waveform inversions appear to be a robust method to quantify mass flow rates from simple sources (monopole) using deployments of infrasound sensors placed around a source, but care should be taken when analyzing and interpreting results from more complex acoustic sources (multipole) that have significant directional components. In the examples we consider the solution is stable for monopole inversions with a signal‐to‐noise ratio greater than five and the dipole component is small. For most scenarios investigated, the vertical dipole component of the multipole explosion source is poorly constrained and can impact the ability to recover the other source term components. Because multipole inversions are ill‐posed for many deployments, a low residual does not necessarily mean the proper source vector has been recovered. Synthetic studies can help investigate the limitations and place bounds on information that may be missing using monopole and multipole inversions for potentially directional sources. Explosions such as those from volcanoes create low‐frequency sound below the threshold of human hearing (infrasound) that can be recorded at a variety of distances. Infrasound can be used to calculate the amount of material being ejected from a volcano and if the sound waves are preferentially emitted in a certain direction. However, this directionality can be difficult to determine because infrasound sensors are often placed on the ground surface, which makes determining the vertical directionality of an explosion source difficult. We use numerical model examples of infrasound deployments around a volcanic source and vary parameters including the station locations, noise level, strength of directionality, and impact of wind to investigate the ability to recover the input source parameters. We find that assuming an infrasound source radiates equally in all directions is good enough even for directional sources if the directional component is small and the signal is five times higher in amplitude than the noise. However, caution should be used for sources that are directional for many infrasound sensor deployments.
