Phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems are at the focus of cutting edge theoretical and experimental research. On the one hand, parity-time- ($\cal PT$-) and anti-$\cal PT$-symmetric physics have gained ever-growing interest, due to the existence of non-Hermitian spectral singularities called exceptional points (EPs). On the other, topological and localization transitions in non-Hermitian systems reveal new phenomena, e.g., the non-Hermitian skin effect and the absence of conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. The great majority of previous studies exclusively focus on non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, whose realization requires an {\it a priori} fine-tuned extended lattices to exhibit topological and localization transition phenomena.In this work, we show how the non-Hermitian localization phenomena can naturally emerge in the synthetic field moments space of zero-dimensional bosonic systems, e.g., in anti-$\cal PT$ and $\cal PT$-symmetric quantum dimers. This offers an opportunity to simulate localization transitions in low-dimensional systems, without the need to construct complex arrays of, e.g., coupled cavities or waveguides. Indeed, the field moment equations of motion can describe an equivalent (quasi-)particle moving in a one-dimensional (1D) synthetic lattice. This synthetic field moments space can exhibit a nontrivial localization phenomena, such as non-Hermitian skin effect, induced by the presence of highly-degenerate EPs. We demonstrate our findings on the example of an anti-$\cal PT$-symmetric two-mode system, whose higher-order field moments eigenspace is emulated by a synthetic 1D non-Hermitian Hamiltonian having a Sylvester matrix shape. Our results can be directly verified in state-of-the-art optical setups, such as superconducting circuits and toroidal resonators, by measuring photon moments or correlation functions., 18 pages

The exceptional points (EPs) of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) are spectral degeneracies associated with coalescing eigenvalues and eigenvectors, which are associated with remarkable dynamical properties. These EPs can be generated experimentally in open quantum systems, evolving under a Lindblad equation, by postselecting on trajectories that present no quantum jumps, such that the dynamics is ruled by a NHH. Interestingly, changing the way the information used for postselection is collected leads to different unravelings, i.e., different set of trajectories, which average to the same Lindblad equation, but are associated with a different NHH. Here, we exploit this mechanism to create and control EPs solely by changing the measurement we postselect on. Our scheme is based on a realistic homodyne reading of the emitted leaking photons with a weak-intensity laser (a process that we call beta-dyne), which we show generates a tunable NHH, that can exhibit EPs even though the system does have any in the absence of the laser. We consider a few illustrative examples pointing out the dramatic effects that different postselections can have on the spectral features of the NHH, paving the road towards engineering of EPs in simple quantum systems.

A universal characterization of non-Markovianity for any open hybrid quantum systems is presented. This formulation is based on the negativity volume of the generalized Wigner function, which serves as an indicator of the quantum correlations in any composite quantum systems. It is shown, that the proposed measure can be utilized for any single or multi-partite quantum system, containing any discrete or continuous variables. Recently, there has been intense research in proposing and developing various methods for constructing high-order exceptional points (EPs) in dissipative systems. These EPs can possess a number of intriguing properties related to, e.g., chiral transport and enhanced sensitivity. Previous proposals to realize non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) with high-order EPs have been mainly based on either direct construction of spatial networks of coupled modes or utilization of synthetic dimensions, e.g., of mapping spatial lattices to time or photon-number space. Both methods rely on the construction of effective NHHs describing classical or postselected quantum fields, which neglect the effects of quantum jumps, and which, thus, suffer from a scalability problem in the {\it quantum regime}, when the probability of quantum jumps increases with the number of excitations and dissipation rate. Here, by considering the full quantum dynamics of a quadratic Liouvillian superoperator, we introduce a simple and effective method for engineering NHHs with high-order quantum EPs, derived from evolution matrices of system operators moments. That is, by quantizing higher-order moments of system operators, e.g., of a quadratic two-mode system, the resulting evolution matrices can be interpreted as alternative NHHs describing, e.g., a spatial lattice of coupled resonators, where spatial sites are represented by high-order field moments in the synthetic space of field moments. As an example, we consider a $U(1)$-symmetric quadratic Liouvillian describing a {\it bimodal} cavity with incoherent mode coupling, which can also possess anti-$\cal PT$-symmetry, whose field moment dynamics can be mapped to an NHH governing a spatial {\it network} of coupled resonators with high-order EPs., 14 pages

Usually, when investigating exceptional points (EPs) of an open Markovian bosonic system, one deals with spectral degeneracies of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH), which can correctly describe the system dynamics only in the semiclassical regime. A recently proposed quantum Liouvillian framework [Minganti et al., Phys. Rev. A 100, 062131 (2019)] enables the complete determination of the dynamical properties of such systems and their EPs (referred to as Liouvillian EPs, or LEPs) in the quantum regime by taking into account the effects of quantum jumps, which are ignored in the NHH formalism. Moreover, the symmetry and eigenfrequency spectrum of the NHH become a part of much larger Liouvillian eigenspace. As such, the EPs of an NHH form a subspace of the LEPs. Here we show that once an NHH of a dissipative linear bosonic system exhibits an EP of a certain finite order $n$, it immediately implies that the corresponding LEP can become of any higher order $m\ensuremath{\ge}n$ defined in the infinite Hilbert space. These higher-order LEPs can be identified by the coherence and spectral functions at the steady state. The coherence functions can offer a convenient tool to probe extreme system sensitivity to external perturbations in the vicinity of higher-order LEPs. As an example, we study a linear bosonic system of a bimodal cavity with incoherent mode coupling to reveal its higher-order LEPs; particularly, of second and third order via first- and second-order coherence functions, respectively. Accordingly, these LEPs can be additionally revealed by squared and cubic Lorentzian spectral lineshapes in the power and intensity-fluctuation spectra. Moreover, we demonstrate that these EPs can also be associated with spontaneous parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking in the system studied. These symmetries can be switched in the output fields (the so-called supermodes) of an additional linear coupler with a properly chosen coupling strength. Thus, we show that the initial loss-loss dynamics for the supermodes can be equivalent to the balanced gain-loss evolution.

We analyze the controlled teleportation protocol through three-qubit mixed states. In particular, we investigate the relation between the faithfulness of the controlled teleportation scheme and entanglement. While our knowledge concerning controlled teleportation and entanglement in pure states is well established, for mixed states it is considerably much harder task and very little has been done in this field. Here, we present counterintuitive results that provide a new light on controlled teleportation protocol. It is shown that even mixed biseparable states are useful for this protocol along with genuine entangled three-qubit states.

Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies of classical and quantum open systems, which are studied in many areas of physics including optics, optoelectronics, plasmonics, and condensed matter physics. In the semiclassical regime, open systems can be described by phenomenological effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians (NHHs) capturing the effects of gain and loss in terms of imaginary fields. The EPs that characterize the spectra of such Hamiltonians (HEPs) describe the time evolution of a system without quantum jumps. It is well known that a full quantum treatment describing more generic dynamics must crucially take into account such quantum jumps. In a recent paper [F. Minganti $et$ $al.$, Phys. Rev. A $\mathbf{100}$, $062131$ ($2019$)], we generalized the notion of EPs to the spectra of Liouvillian superoperators governing open system dynamics described by Lindblad master equations. Intriguingly, we found that in situations where a classical-to-quantum correspondence exists, the two types of dynamics can yield different EPs. In a recent experimental work [M. Naghiloo $et$ $al.$, Nat. Phys. $\mathbf{15}$, $1232$ ($2019$)], it was shown that one can engineer a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian in the quantum limit by postselecting on certain quantum jump trajectories. This raises an interesting question concerning the relation between Hamiltonian and Lindbladian EPs, and quantum trajectories. We discuss these connections by introducing a hybrid-Liouvillian superoperator, capable of describing the passage from an NHH (when one postselects only those trajectories without quantum jumps) to a true Liouvillian including quantum jumps (without postselection). Beyond its fundamental interest, our approach allows to intuitively relate the effects of postselection and finite-efficiency detectors., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Open hybrid quantum systems are characterized via the generalized Wigner function and its corresponding features. Various hybrid quantum states, such as qubit-coherent states, are considered.

We use a non-Lindbladian master equation of the Scully-Lamb laser model for the analysis of light propagation in a parity-time symmetric photonic system composed of coupled active and passive whispering-gallery microresonators. Performing the semiclassical approximation, we obtain a set of two nonlinear coupled differential equations describing the time evolution of intracavity fields. These coupled equations are able to explain the experimentally-observed light non-reciprocity [Peng {\em et al.}, Nature Physics {\bf 10}, 394 (2014), Chang {\em et al.}, Nature Photonics {\bf 8}, 524 (2014)]. We show that this effect arises from the interplay between gain saturation in the active microcavity, intercavity coupling, and losses in the cavities. Additionally, using this approach, we study the effect of the gain saturation on exceptional points, i.e., exotic degeneracies in non-Hermitian systems. Namely, we demonstrate that the inclusion of gain saturation leads to a modification of the exceptional points in the presence of intense intracavity fields. The Scully-Lamb master equation for systems of coupled optical structures, as proposed and applied here, constitutes a promising tool for the study of quantum optical effects in coupled systems with losses, gain, and gain saturation., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

In the past few decades, many works have been devoted to the study of exceptional points (EPs), i.e., exotic degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems. The usual approach in those studies involves the introduction of a phenomenological effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian (NHH), where the gain and losses are incorporated as the imaginary frequencies of fields and from which the Hamiltonian EPs (HEPs) are derived. Although this approach can provide valid equations of motion for the fields in the classical limit, its application in the derivation of EPs in the quantum regime is questionable. Recently, a framework [Minganti {\it et al.}, \href{https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.100.062131}{Phys. Rev. A {\bf 100}, 062131 (2019)}], which allows one to determine quantum EPs from a Liouvillian EP (LEP), rather than from an NHH, has been proposed. Compared to the NHHs, a Liouvillian naturally includes quantum noise effects via quantum-jump terms, thus allowing one to consistently determine its EPs purely in the quantum regime. In this work we study a non-Hermitian system consisting of coupled cavities with unbalanced gain and losses, where the gain is far from saturation, i.e, the system is assumed to be linear. We apply both formalisms, based on an NHH and a Liouvillian within the Scully-Lamb laser theory, to determine and compare the corresponding HEPs and LEPs in the semiclassical and quantum regimes. {Our results indicate that, although the overall spectral properties of the NHH and the corresponding Liouvillian for a given system can differ substantially, their LEPs and HEPs occur for the same combination of system parameters.}, Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

In a recent paper [I.I. Arkhipov, Phys. Rev. A 98, 021803 (2018)], it was shown that one can completely identify the nonclassicality of single- and two-mode Gaussian states by means of certain nonclassicality witnesses which are based on intensity moments up to the third order of optical fields, provided that an appropriate coherent displacement is applied to a given Gaussian state. Here, we utilize a mathematical equivalence between the description of the coherent displaced Gaussian states generated in the spontaneous parametric processes and the Gaussian states generated in the corresponding stimulated parametric processes. Resorting to that equivalence, we study and compare the power of those nonclassicality witnesses in the detection of the nonclassicality of the two-mode Gaussian states generated in both the spontaneous and stimulated second subharmonic and down-conversion processes and which are subsequently subject to a beam splitter. We demonstrate that by means of an appropriate induced stimulated emission one can completely identify the nonclassicality of the considered Gaussian states in comparison to the case of the spontaneous emission. This is important from the experimental point of view, as the stimulated emission can be easily implemented in running optical experiments, and such method can exploit just simple linear detectors., 10 pages, 9 figures

We present an experimental method for complete identification of the nonclassicality of Gaussian states in the whole phase space. Our method relies on nonclassicality witnesses written in terms of measured integrated intensity moments up to the third order, provided that appropriate local coherent displacements are applied to the state under consideration. The introduced approach, thus, only requires linear detectors for measuring intensities of optical fields, that is very convenient and powerful from the experimental point of view. Additionally, we demonstrate that the proposed technique not only allows to completely identify the nonclassicality of the Gaussian states but also to quantify it., 6 pages

In a recent paper, Tilma, Everitt {\it et al.} derived a generalized Wigner function that can characterize both the discrete and continuous variable states, i.e., hybrid states. As such, one can expect that the negativity of the generalized Wigner function applied to the hybrid states can reveal their nonclassicality, in analogy with the well-known Wigner function defined for the continuous variable states. In this work, we demonstrate that, indeed, the negativity volume of the generalized Wigner function of the hybrid bipartite states can be used as an entanglement witness for such states, provided that it exceeds a certain critical value. In particular, we study hybrid bipartite qubit-bosonic states and provide a qubit-Schr\"{o}dinger cat state as an example. Since the detection of the generalized Wigner function of hybrid bipartite states in phase space can be experimentally simpler than the tomographic reconstruction of the corresponding density matrix, our results, therefore, present a convenient tool in the entanglement identification of such states., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Numerous inequalities involving moments of integrated intensities and revealing nonclassicality and entanglement in bipartite optical fields are derived using the majorization theory, non-negative polynomials, the matrix approach, as well as the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. Different approaches for deriving these inequalities are compared. Using the experimental photocount histogram generated by a weak noisy twin beam monitored by a photon-number-resolving iCCD camera the performance of the derived inequalities is compared. A basic set of ten inequalities suitable for monitoring the entanglement of a twin beam is suggested. Inequalities involving moments of photocounts (photon numbers) as well as those containing directly the elements of photocount (photon-number) distributions are also discussed as a tool for revealing nonclassicality., Comment: 15 pages, 19 figures

Nonclassicality criteria based on intensity moments and derived from the usual matrix approach are compared to those provided by the majorization theory. The majorization theory is shown to give a greater number of more suitable nonclassicality criteria. Fifteen experimentally useful criteria of the majorization theory containing the intensity moments up to the fifth order are identified. Their performance is experimentally demonstrated on the set of eleven potentially nonclassical states generated from a twin beam by postselection based on detecting a given number of photocounts in one arm by using an iCCD camera., 14 pages, 4 figures

Multipartite entanglement and nonclassicality of four-mode Gaussian states generated in two simultaneous nonlinear processes involving parametric down-conversion and frequency up-conversion are analyzed assuming the vacuum as the initial state. Suitable conditions for the generation of highly entangled states are found. Transfer of the entanglement from the down-converted modes into the up-converted ones is also suggested. The analysis of the whole set of states reveals that sub-shot-noise intensity correlations between the equally-populated down-converted modes, as well as the equally-populated up-converted modes, uniquely identify entangled states. They represent a powerful entanglement identifier also in other cases with arbitrarily populated modes., 11 pages, 10 figures

The paradigm of second-order phase transitions (PTs) induced by spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) in thermal and quantum systems is a pillar of modern physics that has been fruitfully applied to out-of-equilibrium open quantum systems. Dissipative phase transitions (DPTs) of second order are often connected with SSB, in close analogy with well-known thermal second-order PTs in closed quantum and classical systems. That is, a second-order DPT should disappear by preventing the occurrence of SSB. Here, we prove this statement to be wrong, showing that, surprisingly, SSB is not a necessary condition for the occurrence of second-order DPTs in out-of-equilibrium open quantum systems. We analytically prove this result using the Liouvillian theory of DPTs, and demonstrate this anomalous transition in a paradigmatic laser model, where we can arbitrarily remove SSB while retaining criticality, and on a Z 2-symmetric model of a two-photon Kerr resonator. This new type of PT cannot be interpreted as a ‘semiclassical’ bifurcation, because, after the DPT, the system steady state remains unique.
