- Abstract
The subject of research is the experience and results of the commemoration of the 120th birth anniversary of the writer Ieva Simonaitytė (1897-1978). The significance of this event, celebrated on the national scale, like other anniversaries of prominent personalities in Lithuanian history, was validated by the decision of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and by the 2017 State program, approved by the Prime Minister. Such a decision meant that the State pledged itself to highlight the writer's humanistic values and her creative heritage. The aims of research were to determine the initiatives of the writer's anniversary commemoration , the most important documents and the objectives raised in them, the process of their realization, the achievements and the content. According to the collected data, the events commemorating Ieva Simonaitytė's anniversary were held all over Lithuania. However, the most important ones were centred in the writer's native land - West Lithuania, the former Klaipėda Region. Major events were organized in the cities and towns of Klaipėda, Šilutė, Pagėgiai, Priekulė, Gargždai as the cultural centres of the nearest local authorities. Such an orientation can be explained by the limited budgetary funding of the commemoration program, with scanty allocations mainly channeled to the region's libraries, museums, Klaipėda University academics, the local movements of cultural workers and public figures and theinitiatives launched by them. As regards the scholarly and information aspect, due to the pool of intellectual and financial resources, Vilnius played an important role. The scientific institutions of the capital city held a seminar and discus sion on The Relevance of Ieva Simonaitytė, and the texts of the reports of the participants were published in the journal Colloquia (2017, Nr. 38); the Vilnius University Academic Publishers published a book of evidential texts and reminiscences, I'm Evė, Daughter of Etmė. Lithuanian Radio and Television released a documentary Ieva Simonaitytė and a radio version of the novel Vilius Karalius; they are professional and powerful, unfortunately, somewhat belated as they were shown at the end of the anniversary year. The program did not contain any long-term projects: the major novels and autobiographical books by Simonaitytė were not republished; compilation of the home library catalogue and the author's bibliography was not undertaken; the publication of the epistolary heritage, especially in the German language, was not continued; and a conference on the up-to-date analysis and assessment of the personality and her work was not held. The public was disappointed by the dire state of the Ieva Simonaitytė memorial museum in the town of Priekulė and failure to include it in to the activities of promoting her creative heritage. The Lithuanian general education schools have a problem too: the writer's literary works had been removed from their curricula for 20 years. When it was included into them again in 2016, teachers were faced with difficulties due to the lost experience and methods, the inability to convey the national, moral and social problems raised in the novels, the exceptional qualities of her characters, and the powerful suggestibility of Simonaitytė's narratives. During discussions, the duty to fulfil the writer's will was stressed: to move her remains from Vilnius to the garden at her memorial museum in Priekulė. To realize these tasks, it is necessary to prepare a long-term (for the duration of several years) program of commemorating Simonaitytė's work. Her novels are still relevant today as it was witnessed by a piece of investigative journalism: while celebrating the centenary of the restoration of Lithuania's independence, in the list of the Hundred of Centenary Books rated by a public opinion poll, the most important books of the writer were placed sixth and seventh. The aim of the article is introducing a new approach to the Lithuanian classical novel – “Vilius Karalius” by Ieva Simonaitytė, and appreciating it as an ethnographic source supplying data regarding the wedding customs practiced in the Lithuania Minor in the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. The author compares the literary text and the historical ethnographic facts, also paying attention to the dialect peculiarities. More attention is payed to those segments of the wedding that are more or less explicitly depicted in the novel by Simonaitytė (the matchmaking, the bride’s dowry, leaving for the church, gifts, gaubtuvės, etc.). It appears that although the Lithuanian wedding as a whole is not described in “Vilius Karalius”, the relatively numerous fragments of the wedding customs and rituals, as well as other ethnographic details substantially enrich our knowledge of the wedding practices in the 19th – the first half of the 20th century, also revealing the change of the tradition. Research works by Angelė Vyšniauskaitė serve as the ethnological background for the article, since this researcher has studied the Lithuanian wedding customs very actively and in most detail. Ieva Simonaitytė has recorded in her novel some wedding customs and rituals from the Lithuania Minor that are particularly deeply rooted in tradition and vividly reflect the regional peculiarities: i.e., the adorning and “guarding” of the bride’s corner, the ceremonial covering of the bride (gaubtuvės), the gift giving / ransom, etc. Obviously, some unique aspects of making the dowry came into being in the 20th century Klaipėda Region, possibly determined by intense adoption by the inhabitants of the shop-bought clothes instead of the homemade textiles. The woven trousseau survives as a distinctive mark of the wealthy bride upholding the Lithuanian traditions. The professional matchmaking is explicitly described in the novel as well. In the 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century in the Lithuania Minor, searching for a suitable bride or groom was primarily the women’s business. Spread of pietism and increasing modernization of the society resulted in the negative attitude being increasingly directed at the traditional wedding songs, dances and superstitions of the Lithuania Minor.

Sukaupti duomenys patvirtina, kad I. Simonaitytės sukakties minėjimas vyko visoje Lietuvoje, taciau svarbiausi įvykiai koncentravosi rasytojos gimtajame kraste – Vakarų Lietuvoje, buvusiame Klaipėdos kraste. Didesni renginiai organizuoti cionyksciuose miestuose Klaipėdoje, Silutėje, Priekulėje, Gargžduose, sių miestų artimiausių seniūnijų kultūros centruose. Tokia orientacija sietina su minėjimo programos skurdoku biudžetiniu finansavimu, Kultūros ministerijos tikslingai nukreiptu į rasytojos kilmės regiono bibliotekas, muziejus, Klaipėdos universiteto mokslininkus, cionykscius kultūros darbuotojų ir visuomenininkų sąjūdžius bei jų iniciatyvas. Kai kurios užduotys teko Vilniui dėl jame sutelktų mokslinių ir informacinių institucijų specifinių galimybių. Jos Ievos Simonaitytės siuolaikinio aktualinimo tema organizavo mokslinį seminarą-diskusiją, publikavo dalyvių pasisakymų tekstus, isleido rasytojos amžininkų liudijimų-atsiminimų knygą, Lietuvos radijas ir televizija sukūrė dokumentine apybraižą-filmą, romano „Vilius Karalius“ radiofonizaciją. Jie parengti profesionaliai ir įtaigūs, taciau demonstruoti vėluojant – sukaktuvinių metų pabaigoje. Programoje nebuvo numatytos ir nevykdytos ilgalaikės užduotys, skirtos kūrybos leidybai ir naujų simonaitistikos tyrimo saltinių publikavimui. Vykusiose diskusijose pabrėžta pareiga įvykdyti rasytojos testamentą – amžinam poilsiui atgulti sodelyje prie jos memorialinio muziejaus Priekulėje. Tai susije su palaikų perlaidojimu. Siekiant visų sių užduocių įgyvendinimo siūloma parengti ilgalaike simonaitistikos darbų programą. 120th Birth Anniversary of the Writer Ieva Simonaitytė: Memory, Heritage, and Communication The subject of research is the experience and results of the commemoration of the 120th birth anniversary of the writer Ieva Simonaitytė (1897–1978). Kadangi I. Simonaitytės tekste vaizduojamas lietuvininko susidūrimas su vokiškąja kultūra, daugiausia dėmesio straipsnyje skiriama veikėjų tarpusavio įtampoms. This article newly peruses the largest Ieva Simonaitytė’s “Vilius Karalius” novel (1977 edition) using imagology theory. Not only the approaches towards other culture (mania, phobia, philia and idiocracy) distinguished by French imagologist Daniel Henri Pageaux are presented, but also it is being considered whether new evaluation perspectives of this novel are discovered. Another imagologist Joeph Leerssen emphasizes contrast between the centre and the periphery that is vividly revealed in “Vilius Karalius”. His distinction is the secondary methodological support in this work. Since the collision of German culture with Minor Lithuanian is represented in I. Simonaitytė’s text, the most attention in this article is paid to the conflicts between the characters.

Remiantis Ievos Simonaitytės knygomis, aprašomi XIX a. pabaigos–XX a. pradžios Mažosios Lietuvos gyventojų drabužiai. In this article, the traditional clothing of the inhabitants of Lithuania Minor in the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th century is described on the basis of books by Ieva Simonaitytė. Certain features typical to the Lithuanian attire of the time are discerned in the works by this author. The descriptive, comparative and analytical methods are used to establish changes taking place in the traditions at the turn of the centuries in Lithuania Minor. In the end of the 19th century, the oldest female headdress was muturas – a piece of cloth wrapped around the head. Yet the impact of the contemporary German culture prompted the Lithuanians to start wearing caps and hats. A peculiar female accessory in the end of the 19th century Lithuania Minor was a certain kerchief, used to tie around the psalm book or as an ornament when tucked at the waist, behind the waistband of the skirt or apron, or carried around held by the unornamented corner. Subsequently a certain decorated pocket (delmonas), into which also the kerchief could be tucked, became the most popular accessory of the women in this period. Shirt was also used as a sacred dress, in order to mark the most significant changes taking place in the human life. Among the shirts, special ones for funeral, christening, wedding and confirmation can be named. In the Lithuania Minor, confirmation was a ritual to seal the individual spiritual and physical maturity. Special ornate shirt designed and produced for this occasion used to be passed from one generation to another as a family treasure. The distinctive mark of the altered status of the confirmed girl was her hair plated and tied on her head as a crown, using black velvet ribbon. The black color of the confirmation dress subsequently acquired the character of the national symbol in Lithuania Minor, as well as setting the standard of beauty and fashion. New shoes were also traditionally worn in Lithuania Minor for confirmation, symbolically marking the step taken into the new period of life.

Šis straipsnis – dalis didesnio kolektyvinio darbo, kuriame tiriama multikultūrinių Lietuvos pasienio miestelių bendruomenių atmintis ir tapatybė. Tyrimui pasirinktas Vilkyškių miestelis ir jo apylinkės. Straipsnio tikslas – ištirti, kaip asmens ir bendruomenių tapatybės problemos reiškiasi šioms bendruomenėms priklausiusių rašytojų grožinėje kūryboje. Tyrimo medžiaga – Klaipėdos krašto ir Mažosios Lietuvos gyvenimą vaizduojančių prozininkų (I. Simonaitytės ir A. Petraitytės) romanai. This article is part of a larger group project designed to examine the memories and identities of multicultural Lithuanian border communities, and focuses on the town of Vilkyškis and its environs. The aim of the article is to investigate how problems of personal and communal identity are expressed in the literature of writers from the region. The study examines the novels of I. Simonaitytė and A. Petraitytė, prose writers whose works describe life in Klaipėda district and Lithuania Minor. The concepts of individual and collective identity, as described by the hermeneuticist Heidegger and the cultural sociologist Giddens, form the basis of the explanation of the theoretical aspects of personal and communal identities and their interactions. Pesonal identity is formed by two types of experience: direct sensory experience, and socalled mediated (received through intermediaries) experience. The article analyzes the novels of Simonaitytė and Petraitytė to determine how communal traditions and important aspects of national identity are passed down the generations, and questions why some traditions are absorbed naturally, others only with effort, while still others are rejected outright. The "nuclear family" has the greatest influence on personal identity, more so than the “extended family.” Other influences include the local village or town community, while the "extended community" affects public life.

Skulptorius ir dailėtyrininkas Arūnas Kazys Kynas gimė ir gyvena Vilniuje. 1981 m. jis sukūrė Mažosios Lietuvos rašytojos ir lietuvybės puoselėtojos Ievos Simonaitytės (1897-1978) medinę skulptūrą (130 x 140 x 60 cm). Tais pačiais metais kūrinys eksponuotas Respublikinėje vaizduojamosios dailės parodoje. Jai pasibaigus, iš autoriaus įsigytas kūrinys (nupirktas už 1800 rb.) papildė Lietuvos dailės muziejaus šiuolaikinės lietuvių skulptūros rinkinį (Inv. Nr. S-1503, Ap-1633). Sculptor and art critic Arūnas Kazys Kynas was born and lives in Vilnius. In 1981 he created a wooden sculpture (130 x 140 x 60 cm) of Ieva Simonaitytė (1897-1978), a writer and advocate of Lithuanian culture in Lithuania Minor. This work was exhibited at the Lithuanian Republican Exhibition of Fine Arts the same year. After the exhibition ended, the work was bought from the artist (for 1 800 rubles) and was added to the Lithuanian Art Museum's collection of contemporary sculpture (Inv. No. S-1503, Ap-1633). Not dry enough wood was used for the sculpture which resulted in enormous timber shrinkage, deformation of parts of the sculpture and the formation of cracks. The sculpture was brought to the Pranas Gudynas Restoration Center split into four parts. The publication discusses the restoration of the art work as well as research and restoration techniques. The authors claim that one of the main reasons of the decay of this relatively recent art work is that in making it the physical properties of wood were disregarded. Properly dried wood should be selected for sculptures; whereas separate parts of the plains should lie snugly against each other. It is also essential to choose the parts of wood with the same fibre direction. All these factors increase sculpture's integrity, protecting from deformation and ensuring the longevity of an art piece.

Analizės objektas – XX a. – XXI a. pr. lietuvių moterų rašytojų kūriniai: Ievos Simonaitytės romanas Vilius Karalius (1939), Jolitos Skablauskaitės romanai Mėnesienos skalikas (1997) bei Kitas kraujas (2002). Simonaitytės bei J. Skablauskaitės moters portrete dėmesys koncentruojamas į jos išorę, aprangą. Jų kūryboje apranga – tai moteriškojo identiteto dalis. I. Simonaitytė akcentuoja drabužių autentiškumą kaip tradicijų puoselėjimo bei išliekamosios vertės ženklą. A literary portrait as well as any other element of artistic creation is not static or closed. It is influenced by changes in the historical time, cultural context integral with interlacing of artistic styles, movements, trends. The process of change in the portrait in women's texts was influenced by the feminist movement which formed the feminist literary criticism. The major place in it is given to woman's experience, feminine writing, and female tradition in literature. Significant attention in creation of a woman's portrait is paid to expression of non-verbal communication signs. The aim of the paper is to analyse what portrait of a woman in Lithuanian women's prose is created; to find out what the functions of outfit as one of non-verbal communication means are in depiction of a woman's portrait on the grounds of feminist literary criticism, comparative, interpretational methods. The object of the analysis is the pieces by women writers of the 20th and the 21st centuries: the novel by Ieva Simonaitytė "Vilius Karalius" (1939), the novels by Jolita Skablauskaitė "Mėnesienos skalikas" (A Moonlight Hound) (1997) and "Kitas kraujas" (Other Blood) (2002). In the female portraits depicted by Simonaitytė and Skablauskaitė attention is focused on a woman's appearance and outfit. In their creation, the outfit is a part of female identity. Simonaitytė emphasises authenticity of clothes as a sign of tradition cherishing and persistent value. In the woman's portrait created by Skablauskaitė, outfit not only reveals the writer's aesthetical worldview, but also expresses a woman's mystique, the powers lying inside her

Straipsnyje siekiama išsiaiškinti, kokios moters portreto transformacijos vyksta moterų literatūros kontekste. Plačiau analizuojamas portreto turinys, apimantis vaizduojamos moters refleksiją, perteikiančią jos vidinę raidą, vertybines sistemas, dėmesys koncentruojamas į erdvės ženklus. Straipsnyje tyrinėjami XX a. - XXI a. pr. lietuvių moterų rašytojų kūriniai: Ievos Simonaitytės romanas "Vilius Karalius", Zitos Čepaitės romanai "Paulinos kelionė" bei "Moters istorija", Dalios Jazukevičiūtės romanai "Anarchistės išpažintis" bei "Juodas kvadratas". Analizuojamuose romanuose erdvinė raiška moters portreto kūrime atskleidžia vaizduojamos moters savimonę, tapatumo problematiką. Taip pat šie ženklai išreiškia vaizduojamų moterų vertybių sistemas, suponuojančias skirtingus vaizduojamų moterų portretų variantus. I. Simonaitytės bei D. Jazukevičiūtės vaizduojamas moteris vienija namų reikšmė bei motinystė, kaip pamatinis moters savivokos bruožas. Pastebima D. Jazukevičiūtės namų moters portreto modifikacija - šeimą kaip vertybę keičia vaizduojamos moters savirealizacija kūryboje. Viešos / atviros erdvės ženklai Z. Čepaitės romanuose atskleidžia keliaujančios moters portreto kūrimo tendenciją, kurioje anuliuojamos tradicinės vertybės: namai, šeima, motinystė. Šios vertybės keičiamos laisve bei meile kaip sąmoningu vaizduojamos moters pasirinkimu. Akcentuojamos moters identiteto paieškos. Namų moters portreto variantai, jų tradicinė raiška ankstyvojoje moterų prozoje ir modifikacija šiandieninėje kūryboje rodo literatūrinio portreto kintamumą, kurį sąlygoja kultūrinio konteksto kaita. Vadovaujantis N.Frye'aus archetipinės kritikos metodu darbe siekiama nustatyti, kokiems žanriniams tipams būtų galima priskirti Ievos Simonaitytės romaną „Aukštųjų Šimonių likimas", apčiuopti jame susiliejančius kolektyvo bei individualiojo „aš“ pradus, apibūdinti vienaip ar kitaip romane kontaktuojančias bajoriškosios ir valstietiškosios kultūros, moteriškumo ir vyriškumo, pagonybės bei krikščionybės sąsajas. Analizei pasirinktas pirmasis I. Simonaitytės romano variantas su skyriumi „Naujų laikų aušra". The main aim of the present analysis is to determine the genre types of Ieva Simonaitytė novel's "Aukštųjų Šimonių likimas". As it turned out, this work is a multi-layered novel, in which the rudiments of the Ancient Baltic world-outlook and modern way of thinking are amalgamated. The novel not only depicts the social mode of life, but also represents a chronicle of a family, where the role of fate is very significant. Thus folklore-archetypical, socio-cultural, autobiographical and psychological aspects of the novel are highlighted. The first version of the novel was chosen for the analysis. It contains the chapters "Naujų laikų aušra" ("The Dawn of the New Times") and "Epilogas" ("Epilogue")
