Abstract

The implementation of Computer Science (CS) in Malaysian secondary schools aims to develop digital proficiency among youths. Despite this, Kedah state has seen fluctuating enrolment in CS elective subjects for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam between 2018 and 2021, which contrasts with the increasing popularity of CS programs in higher education and the rising demand for CS skills. Addressing the challenges teachers face in delivering CS subjects is crucial, including issues like inadequate training, limited resources, language barriers, and diverse student backgrounds. This study uses a quantitative approach with self-developed questionnaires distributed among experienced CS teachers in Kedah to identify these challenges and propose solutions. Findings reveal a mix of experienced and less experienced teachers, mostly with medium-level proficiency. The study highlights difficulties in teaching Form 4 and Form 5 content and suggests improvements through professional development, collaboration, hands-on experiences, and updated resources to enhance teaching effectiveness and better align secondary education with higher education and job market needs. Abstract

The palm oil industry forms the backbone of the Malaysian agricultural economy and is indexed as one of the National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs). Despite the rapid demand for palm oil, the labor shortage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has reduced harvest activity since the dependability on human labor is still high. Based on this scenario, the way forward to resolve the issue is through the implementation of mechanized equipment to assist plantation activities. However, the output rate based on the implementation of mechanized equipment in the Malaysian palm oil industry is still unclear. In this regard, this paper aims to develop a simulation model that mimics the operation of the mechanized equipment in the palm oil mill using a discrete event simulation (DES) approach. The related mechanized equipment has been considered in the simulation model to resemble the palm oil mill operation, namely clarification, extraction, sterilization, and stripping stations. As a result, it is found that the sterilization process contributes to the longest waiting time (122.89 seconds) and the highest number of waiting (3.04 tons). In contrast, stripping stations turn the lowest percentage of resource utilization. By improving the utilization of identified mechanized equipment, the dependability on human labor can be reduced gradually. Consequently, it will increase the harvest output known as Fresh Fruit Branches (FFB) yield and crude palm oil (CPO) production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Truck queuing analysis at landfill sites in a waste collection vehicle routing problem

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of a truck queuing problem at landfill sites due to a static rest time of truck drivers in a waste collection vehicle routing problem. The analysis is based on a solution of two datasets from a benchmark waste collection problem using the nearest greedy heuristic algorithm.In this problem, all drivers need to have a one-hour rest break during their collection.The rest break can start from 11.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. However, based on the solution from a previous study, all drivers have their rest break almost at the same time. Consequently, all drivers travelled to landfill sites to unload waste approximately at the same time.Based on the truck queuing analysis presented in this paper, there is a long queue at landfill site 3 (ten trucks arrived between 2.52 p.m. to 2.53 p.m.) for dataset 1; whereas for dataset 2, 13 trucks arrived at landfill site 1 between 4.10 p.m. to 4.55 p.m. Thus, it may be concluded that the static rest time period of truck drivers can cause truck queuing at landfill sites. Long queues at landfill sites will increase the service time at landfill sites as well as affect the drivers’ arrival time at customers. This paper suggests that future works need to consider a dynamic rest time period in solution techniques to overcome the truck queuing problem at landfill sites for solving the waste collection vehicle routing problem.

Abstract

Waste collection vehicle routing problem (WCVRP) is one of the most studied areas and has received high interest from the modern society today.This corresponds to the cost efficiency, population growth, and environmental concerns.The growth of the WCVRP awareness is the result of continuous supports from government and private organizations.This paper reviews severa established benchmark datasets and successful real-life case studies. Respectively billions of dollars have been saved from the operational costs.The current trend for benchmark datasets presented and case studies are accordingly grouped by countries and continents, thus revealing the need for WCVRP. Investigation on objectives, constraints and algorithms are also discussed. Results showed the increased interest of researchers in using benchmark datasets as well as the case studies and some of the constraints that should be considered in WCVRP.It also suggested that environmental or quality of service issues can be integrated into the common objectives of minimizing cost and distance travelled.Methods used in WCVRP are exact methods and approximate methods.Results showed that approximate methods have the capability in providing good results for large-scale data. Conclusively, this study analyzes the gap and provides recommendations for researches.

Abstract

Information-Centric Networking (ICN), also called Content-Centric Networking, is the most ascendant architecture for the Future Internet.In ICN, network nodes cache contents for a time before forwarding them to the end users.One of the applicable proposals to in-network caching, called Networking Named Content (NNC), suggests that caching contents at every node along the path can improve caching gain in terms of hit rate and content retrieval delay. However, storing content items at every node along the path can increase the chances of redundancy. Some strategies investigated that caching contents at only one intermediate node along the path can reduce the chances of redundancy. In addition, some strategies suggested that storing only popular contents can do better in performance, especially in reduced content redundancy. In this paper, we present a scheme, named Content Placement Mechanism (CPM), based on popularity of the contents that is suitable for redundancy elimination.

Abstract

Group comparisons are at the heart of many research questions addressed by researchers.Making inferences and drawing conclusions through statistical hypothesis testing on the differences between groups is actively adopted by researchers in many disciplines.When the groups are dependent, and violation of normality assumption occurred, the most commonly used method like paired t-test, usually produced doubtful result which will lead to misleading conclusions.As alternative, researchers tend to choose non parametric Wilcoxon signed rank test for the purpose.The computation of this statistic involves ranking the absolute difference of each pair of observations and any pair with 0 differences will be discarded.In this study, the statistic was modified by includimg the 0 differences in the ranking. The empirical Type I error rates of the modified statistical test was measured via Monte Carlo simulation. These rates were obtained under the combination of leptokurtic distributional shapes with various sample sizes and number of replications.The modified Wilcoxon signed rank test was found to be more robust under symmetric lepto!antic with conservative values as compared to the skewed leptokurtic distribution. The finding also indicated that different number of replications had no effect on Type I error.
