This article reads Albert Wendt's theorization and practice of 'postcolonial' writing in opposition to the project of constructing a unitary theory of 'World SF,' which I argue is a misguided effort that, in spite of its good intentions, carries with it some unfortunate colonial baggage. The article focuses on two long narratives by Albert Wendt, the most celebrated and influential Oceanian writer of the past half century. In contrast to understanding Wendt's work as a 'semi-peripheral' success at forging a 'structural compromise' between Western and Indigenous forms, I argue for using Ngugi wa Thiong'o's theory of 'globalectics' to describe how Wendt's 'synthesis forged in resistance' articulates Indigenous and Western traditions. Ethnic dress is usually stringently defined as a particular set of clothes produced and worn by a specific set of people and their descendants. It is an instantly recognizable visual representation of their culture and their heritage. This is no less true of Scottish tartan and kilts, but Scottish dress today is worn by groups as diverse as the Scottish people and their descendants and cosplayers who are fans of the television show, Outlander. Yet wearing of Scottish dress is no less an expression of these cosplayers' identity. The world-wide appeal of a Romantic Scotland can be traced to Sir Walter Scott's Waverley. Through a brief history of the invention of traditional Scottish dress by Scott and others and through interviews with a diverse range of people who wear Scottish dress this article will show that Scottish or Scottish-inspired dress is unique in that it not only represents a culture and history, but that it is malleable enough to enable a vast array of people to use it to communicate or even subsume their identities in the broader world. This article explores how the islands of Bali and Lombok were racialised through the work of Dutch racial scientist J.P. Kleiweg de Zwaan in the 1930s. An examination of both Kleiweg's published works and his local practices draws attention to the fact that racialisation occurred at different moments of anthropological work, producing different outcomes. The purpose of this article was to examine why men keep clothing that does not fit. Previous research with women suggests that clothes that do not fit are not simply thrown away, but may be kept as a reflection of the self. A web-based survey that prompted discussion of keeping ill-fitting clothing was completed by 76 men at a Midwestern university of all ages. The themes found were these clothes were kept for Weight Management, Investment Value, Sentimental Value and Functional Value. Young men made less reference to Weight Management than older ones. Younger men kept clothing for Sentimental Value with pleasant associations to childhood. Societal pressures to limit interaction with clothing were evident with responses such as finding function in ill-fitting clothing rather than purchasing new ones. However, identity was reflected in these choices. Further research with men is needed to fully understand clothing disposal practices among men. This article addresses the current praxis and controversies framing marriage prestations in urban East Timor. Drawing on data related to practices, narratives, and social location of agents who stand for and against barlake (the local name for a part or the whole of marriage prestations), it suggests how the association of marriage transactions with different regimes of exchange--namely, gift and commodity--is a means for producing prestige and social distinction between ema Dili and ema foho. The lack of consensus about a single meaning for barlake allows everyone to reproduce their commitments with local and global expectations of modernity. Such phenomena result from ascribing marriage prestations to the gift regime of exchange, regardless of the number or the kind of gift functions implied in them. The controversies surrounding barlake entail a moral narrative of modernity structured by anxieties related to: (1) fixing ontological boundaries between people and things; (2) the alliance effects people search for when carrying out their marriage; (3) the social history and politics of custom associated with Dili as a place of civilized/assimilated people, and, finally; (4) people's historical period of migration to the city. This research paper focuses on the art of three women artists--Fatima Abu-Roomi, Samah Shihadi and Fatma Shanan. The research paper focuses on the work of three women artists who are 'double-minority'--Fatima Abu-Roomi, Samah Shihadi, and Fatma Shanan. Their 'double-minority' status comes from being Arab women, raised in patriarchal communities as Muslims (Abu-Roomi and Shihadi), or Druze (Shanan), who live and work among a Jewish majority in the Western-based environment of Israel. The objectives of this research are to point out the significance of their art as an innovative and unique voice within the Israeli art scene that reflect the conditions of young Arab women living in Israel today. Through analysis of their art, the research will aim to explore the artistic strategies, topics, and styles, as a means of negotiating their identity as a 'double-minority'. A feminist reading of the artwork will be followed by another theoretical point of view from the psychoanalyst Donald W. Winnicott who coined the term 'potential space'. In different 'potential spaces', the artists question cultural boundaries, national issues of colonialism, and gender roles. Pre-professional identity is a complex phenomenon spanning awareness of and connection with the skills, qualities, behaviours, values and standards of a student's chosen profession, as well as one's understanding of professional self in relation to the broader general self. It is an important, yet under-explored, aspect of graduate employability and can influence academic success, well-being and productivity. This study investigates the role of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), more specifically work placements, in developing pre-professional identity among undergraduates. It uses qualitative data, in the form of structured reflections, gathered over two time periods from 105 business students in a Western Australian university. Findings indicate that work placements can offer a valuable platform for fostering identity construction. Students use the experience to make sense of their intended profession through observing, questioning and interacting with seasoned professionals. Appraising and reflecting on their experience, through learning activities and assessment, are highlighted as important elements of placement design and critical for students to question and make sense of what they observed and learned. Strategies are presented for industry and education practitioners to enhance pre-professional identity development among undergraduates. The present study examined facets of athletic identity (i.e., appearance, importance, competence, and encouragement) as predictors of sport orientation dimensions in a sample of 183 collegiate athletes (114 males & 69 females). Results from conducting correlational analyses indicated that all facets of athletic identity were positively associated with all three dimensions of sport orientation, namely competitiveness, win orientation, and goal orientation. However, results from conducting hierarchical regression analyses indicated that, independent of demographic variables (i.e., age, gender, & race/ethnicity), competence was the only unique facet of athletic identity to predict each of the three sport orientation dimensions. Professional identity development is an emerging area for alcohol and drug counselors. Few studies have investigated professional identity in alcohol and drug counselors (Ogborne, Braun, & Schmidt. 2001; Massella, Simons, Young, Haas, & Toth 2013). The goal of the current study is to add to this area of research. A total of 1, 333 certified addiction professionals were recruited to take part in an online survey about professional and recovery identity and professional development. The survey response rate was 20.7%. Most participants were White females with a graduate degree. Less than half of the participants identified themselves as in recovery from substance abuse. Alcohol and drug professionals with a recovering identity work with different populations, use different modalities and subscribe to different theoretical orientations compared to those professionals without a recovering identity. The need to recognize and promote alcohol and drug professionals ' identity is paramount for securing addiction counseling as a distinct discipline or counseling specialty in the behavioral health field. Presented originally as a collection of oral ballads, the work was later shown to consist of composite texts subject to extensive rewriting. As with the Kinder- und Hausmarchen and Poems of Ossian, the authenticity of the Barzaz Breiz has been the subject of extensive scholarly controversy, particularly within France. The Shas tkhine ravpninim published in New York by the Hebrew Publishing Company in 1916 was the first volume of tkhines--Jewish devotional prayers in Yiddish--to be published for immigrant Jewish women in America in the early twentieth century. This article focuses on the volume's history and historical significance. After discussing its contents and its differences both from earlier and contemporary European counterparts and from previously published prayer compilations and devotionals for Jewish women in America, the article moves on to address the role played by devotional prayers in the construction of immigrant identity and empowerment. How did the tkhines differ from standard Jewish public prayer in this respect? How did this multiplicity of religious ties enable the immigrant to better cope with a new reality? And how well does the popularity of these prayers among traditional early twentieth-century Jewish women immigrants in America fit the research postulate that immigration is often a disruptive event that alienates immigrants from religious practice? For the immigrant Jewish women who recited the tkhines at home, it seems, these prayers functioned in multiple ways: They reflected these women's immigrant Jewish identity, but at the same time, by the very act of doing so, they also took part in constructing and strengthening that identity. By referring to the nature of immigrant Jewish life in America or the major events that molded the lives of immigrant Jewish women, the tkhines became more than traditional Jewish prayers. This article considers the reconstruction of Rwanda's post-genocide music industry through the national music competition, Primus Guma Guma Super Star. It explores local ideas about 'playback' and 'live' music, and argues that these two performative categories can be understood as wider metaphors for the relationship between the Rwandan state and its citizens, particularly Rwandan youth. On the one hand, Guma Guma aims to create the ideal post-genocide celebrity subject who will 'play back' a unified, de-ethnicized Rwandan identity with body and words. On the other, during the first two seasons of the competition, audiences demanded 'live' performance and Guma Guma prompted heated debate about 'taboo' topics, revealing enduring differences along socio-economic, ethnic and regional lines. Rather than affirm an inclusive Rwandan identity, Guma Guma hinted at its fragility and underscored the multiple and conflicting ways in which young people identify themselves and evaluate 'truth' in the post-genocide era. The article contributes not only to literature on popular culture in Africa, but also to studies that focus on mediation and changes in recording technology. Although scholars have quite rightly attempted to dissolve the boundary between the live and the mediated, I suggest that the boundary continues to do cultural and political work, particularly in developmental states. The end of the apartheid era in South Africa inaugurated an increased mobility and accessibility to previously prohibited spaces. Although African migrant populations are still highly regulated in South Africa, their presence has also profoundly transformed the country's present-day sociolinguistic and cultural landscape. The textual construction of the literary text in this study draws attention to the post-structuralist perspective which argues that languages are not closed entities but rather open systems utilised for expressive purposes in specific social contexts. Most significantly, recent sociolinguistic studies show that languages are no longer regarded as discrete systems in communication because they form expansive linguistic repertoires in contact spaces. Such an understanding of multilingual use facilitates communication across cultural, linguistic and national borders, thereby subverting exclusionary normative practices. The present article draws from translingual perspectives to examine communicative practices in literary discourse. Zines are self- published, non-commercial magazines that range in size, form and genre, and that tackle the most disparate issues including stories from everyday life. While academia has been reluctant to bring zines within the classroom due to their non-academic layout, multitude of styles, broken grammar, strong tones and content, this paper explains what brings zines into existence and how the latter give girls and women a chance to produce and write culture while creating new spaces of resistance. This essay interrogates the ways that African Guyanese use proverbs in kweh-kweh ritual settings to assert ancestral authority, address taboo subjects, and impart matrimonial advice to soon-to-be-married couples. This article discusses articulations of the Samoan 'relational self,' traces broad patterns and recent developments that indicate an interplay of global forces and local expressions of Samoanness, and reflects on questions regarding how, given contexts of globalization and cultural change, Samoans might be negotiating between individuality and collectivity--'being for the self' and 'being for the group.' As a means of addressing these questions, it explores the work of Samoan literary and performing artists, drawing on the novel Where We Once Belonged by Sia Figiel and on a wide range of Samoan hip hop artists based in California, Hawai'i, and Aotearoa/New Zealand. Situating itself within a history of Pacific critical writing that pays attention to the work of art and artists--according to them not just the ability to represent Pacific societies but also the power to shape, change, and build them--this article understands Samoan literary and performing artists as providing important commentary toward fashioning an Oceanic community of critique capable of navigating future ways of being Samoan.
