Abstract

Avatar-mediated communication in virtual reality (VR) is challenging when compared to face-to-face communication, particularly, for expressing users’ intentions to others. This is due, in part, to the technological medium’s restriction of nonverbal communication cues, including gesture and facial expression. In platforms for social VR, there are interfaces that allow users to express their intentions through their avatars by selecting several given symbolic gestures, e.g., ”good” and ”surprise”. However, little is known about the effects of the symbolic gestures on communication. We investigate the effects of symbolic gestures on communication in VR and conducted user experiment with brainstorming tasks in three different conditions: VR with symbolic gestures, VR without symbolic gestures, and face-to-face. Our results showed significant differences in several items of the participants’ subjective questionnaires, i.e., participants reported that symbolic gestures helped them to express their intentions and feelings more easily than the other conditions. It means symbolic gestures improve social presence on communication in VR.

Abstract

The three-body ionic-recombination reaction of Ar+(2P3/2)/Cl-/Ar leading to ArCl(B,C), Ar(3P2), and Cl(4s,4s’,4p,4p’,4d,5p,6s) has been studied spectroscopically in an Ar flowing afterglow. The results obtained are compared with our previous data for the Ar+(2P3/2)/Cl-/He reaction in order to examine the effects of the third-body atom. The Ar+(2P3/2)/Cl-/Ar reaction populates lower energy states of [Ar+(2P3/2)Cl-] intermediates than the Ar+(2P3/2)/Cl-/He one, so that the branching ratio of excimer becomes large in comparison with those of predissociation channels, the lower ArCl(B) state is preferentially excited than the ArCl(C) state, the ArCl(B) state is populated in lower vibrational levels, and the electronic state distribution of Cl* shifts to lower energy. On the basis of these findings, it is concluded that the heavy Ar atom is a more efficient acceptor of the excess energy than the light He atom in the Ar+(2P3/2)/Cl-/Rg (Rg=rare gas) system. Abstract

The three-body ionic-recombination reaction of Ar+(2P3/2)+Cl-+He has been studied by observing ArCl(B–X,C–A) and Cl(4s,4s’,4p,4p’,4d,5p,6s) emissions in the He flowing afterglow. CCl4 or CFCl3 is used as a source of Cl-. The ArCl(B–X,C–A) emissions enhance relative to the Cl* bands with increasing the CCl4 pressure. It is explained as due to the secondary Ar(3P2)+CCl4 reaction, which is used to estimate the relative formation rate of Ar(3P2). The relative formation rates of ArCl(B,C), Ar(3P2), and Cl* are determined to be 0.0087±0.0009, 0.64±0.06, and 0.35±0.04, respectively. The small branching ratio of ArCl(B,C) is attributed to fast predissociation into Ar(3P2) and Cl*. The favorable Cl* states are 4s’ populated by direct reaction and 4p populated by direct reaction and/or radiative cascade from the 3d and 5s states. The electronic state distribution of Cl(4p’,4d,5p,6s) is nonstatistical without any strong preference for J. Although both doublet and quartet states are found for the Cl[5p(P,D)] states, only quartet states are observed for the Cl[5p(S),4d(D,F)] states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Nascent vibrational distributions of KrF(B) and XeCl(B) resulting from Kr+(2P3/2)+SF-6 and Xe+(2P3/2)+Cl-+He reactions have been determined by a spectral simulation of the bound–free B–X transition. The vibrational distribution of KrF(B) has a maximum at v’=0 and decreases exponentially with increasing v’. It is in reasonable agreement with the statistical prior distribution in which all vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom in the products are taken into consideration. It is therefore concluded that the Kr+(2P3/2)+SF-6 reaction proceeds through a long-lived [Kr+(2P3/2)SF-6] intermediate. The vibrational distribution of XeCl(B) decreases linearly with increasing v’. It is more vibrationally excited than the prior distribution, indicating that a (Xe+Cl-He) intermediate decomposes before a complete energy randomization. The average fractions of total available energy deposited into vibrational energy of the excimer are estimated to be 5.8% for the Kr+(2P3/2)+SF-6 reaction and 16% for the Xe+(2P3/2)+Cl-+He reaction. On the basis of the conservation of total angular momentum during the reactions, one reason for the low values is attributable to a very large impact parameter in the entrance channels, which requires a significant transfer of potential energy into rotational energy of the excimer and kinetic energy of the products. The other reason is a significant transfer of potential energy into kinetic energy because of the acceleration of the positive and negative ions due to a strong Coulombic attractive force. Abstract

More recently, the idea of runtime synchronization of GSN has been proposed, where evidences are being collected from logs that are produced by monitors and other software components. By introducing the runtime synchronization, GSN can be regarded as a program where its validity is checked by applying runtime contexts. In this fast abstract, we introduce Assure-It, a novel tool that enforces administration scripts with assurance cases guidance and runtime synchronization.
