Preceding a core-collapse supernova, various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming core-collapse supernova can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-supernova neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande on pre-supernova neutrino detection. A pre-supernova alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the Super-Kamiokande detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-supernova neutrino signal from a 15 M$_{\odot}$ star within 510 pc of the Earth, at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. Direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) can provide strong evidence of their existence and the directional method would have an advantage over other methods to detect the clear signal of WIMPs. Time projection chambers with micro-patterned gaseous detectors (MPGDs) are one of the common devices used in directional WIMP searches. A micro pixel chamber ($\mu$-PIC), one of the various types of MPGDs, with specially selected low background materials (LBG$\mu$-PIC) was developed and its performance was studied. The radon emission of the LBG$\mu$-PIC was less than 1/60 of that of the $\mu$-PIC currently in use. NEWAGE is a direction-sensitive dark matter search experiment with a three-dimensional tracking detector based on a gaseous micro time projection chamber. A direction-sensitive dark matter search was carried out at Kamioka Observatory with a total live time of 318.0 days resulting in an exposure of 3.18 kg$\cdot$days. A new gamma-ray rejection and a head-tail determination analysis were implemented for this work. No significant non-isotropic signal from the directional analysis was found and a 90% confidence level upper limit on spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross section of 25.7 pb for WIMP mass of 150 GeV/c2 was derived. NEWAGE is a direction-sensitive dark matter search using a low-pressure gaseous time projection chamber. A low alpha-ray emission rate micro pixel chamber had been developed in order to reduce background for dark matter search. We conducted the dark matter search at the Kamioka Observatory in 2018. The total live time was 107.6 days corresponding to an exposure of 1.1 kg${\cdot}$days. Two events remained in the energy region of 50-60 keV which was consistent with 2.5 events of the expected background. A directional analysis was carried out and no significant forward-backward asymmetry derived from the WIMP-nucleus elastic scatterings was found. Thus a 90% confidence level upper limit on Spin-Dependent WIMP-proton cross section of 50 pb for a WIMP mass of 100 GeV/c2 was derived. This limit is the most stringent yet obtained from direction-sensitive dark matter search experiments.

If a supernova explosion occurs within a few hundred parsecs from the Earth, a huge number of axions, in addition to neutrinos, may arrive at the Earth. In this paper, we discuss in detail the prospect of detecting those supernova axions by an axion helioscope. With the help of a pre-supernova neutrino alert system, it is possible to point a helioscope at an exploding supernova in advance. The supernova axions can then be detected by a gamma-ray detector installed at the end of the helioscope. We call such a detection system an axion supernova-scope (SNscope). We propose a conceptual design for an axion SNscope, where the gamma-ray detector is installed at the opposite end to the X-ray detector for the solar axion. It still functions as an axion helioscope during the normal operation time, and once a pre-SN neutrino alert is received, the scope is temporarily turned around and targeted to a SN candidate, waiting for the supernova axions. We estimate the sensitivity of supernova axion detection and find that SNscopes based on the next-generation axion helioscopes, such as IAXO, have potential to explore the invisible axions and to test the axion interpretation of stellar cooling anomalies., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

Direction sensitivity could provide robust evidence for the direct detection of weakly interacting massive particles constituting dark matter. However, the sensitivity of this method remains low due to the radioactive backgrounds. The purpose of this study is to develop a low-background detector as a two-dimensional imaging device for a gaseous time projection chamber. In direction-sensitive dark matter experiments~(e.g. NEWAGE), $\alpha$-rays emitted from the detector components often create substantial radioactive backgrounds. Based on the study of the background of NEWAGE, a new detector "low-$\alpha$ $\mu$-PIC" is developed. The produced $\mu$-PIC performs well as a gas detector and the $\alpha$-ray emission rate from the $\mu$-PIC reduced by a factor of 100.

The scintillation yields of ZnWO$_4$ crystals change depending on the incident direction of particles. This property can be used as a direction-sensitive dark matter detector. So, we investigated the ZnWO$_4$ light yields ratio of neutron-induced nuclear recoils to gamma-ray induced electron recoils(quenching factor). Two surfaces almost perpendicular to the crystal axis of ZnWO$_4$ were irradiated with a quasi-monochromatic neutron beam of 0.885MeV, and the quenching factors of both surfaces for the oxygen-nucleus recoil in the ZnWO$_4$ crystal were measured. The obtained quenching factors of the two surfaces were 0.235 $\pm$ 0.026 and 0.199 $\pm$ 0.020, respectively confirming 15.3$\%$ of anisotropy.

The idea of a hermetic quartz chamber in a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC) has the potential to improve the detector sensitivity for direct dark matter searches in the future. A major challenge facing TPC detectors in future dark matter experiments will be the reduction of the internal background such as $^{222}$Rn and the deterioration of the ionization signal due to electronegative impurities. The hermetic quartz chamber can isolate the TPC's sensitive volume from external interference and is thus expected to prevent contamination caused by the radioactive and electronegative impurities, which originate from outer detector materials. At the Kamioka Observatory in Japan, we developed a TPC with a quartz chamber that contains a $\phi 48 \times 58$ mm volume of liquid xenon. At this development stage, we did not aim at the perfect hermeticity of the quartz chamber. Our aim here is twofold: first, to demonstrate via the use of a calibration source that the presence of quartz materials in the TPC does not impact its operation; and second, to perform quantitative measurements of the TPC's characteristics. We successfully measured electron drift velocities of 1.2--1.7 mm/$\mu$s in liquid xenon under electric fields ranging from 75--384 V/cm, and also observed small S2 signals produced by a single ionized electron with a light yield of 16.5 $\pm$ 0.5 PE. A high light yield calcium iodide (CaI2) scintillator is being developed for an astroparticle physics experiments. This paper reports scintillation performance of calcium iodide (CaI2) crystal. Large light emission of 2.7 times that of NaI(Tl) and an emission wavelength in good agreement with the sensitive wavelength of the photomultiplier were obtained. A study of pulse shape discrimination using alpha and gamma sources was also performed. A new-concept time projection chamber (TPC) using a commercial resistive sheet, sheet-resistor micro-TPC SR-microPIC, was developed and its performance was measured. SR-microTPC has the potential to create a more uniform electric field than conventional TPCs with resistor-chains owing to its continuous sheet resistivity, and its production would be easier than that of conventional TPCs. The material used in this study, Achilles-Vynilas, was found to be thin, transparent, and low-radioactive. The performance test with cosmic muons showed very promising results, including the demonstration of a good tracking-performance. 1T-TiSe2 has a semimetallic band structure at room temperature and undergoes phase transition to a triple-q charge density wave (CDW) state with a commensurate superlattice structure (2a * 2a * 2c) below Tc ~ 200 K at ambient pressure. This phase transition is caused by cooperative phenomena involving electron-phonon and electron-hole (excitonic) interactions, and cannot be described by a standard CDW framework. By Cu intercalation or the application of pressure, this phase transition temperature is suppressed and superconductivity (SC) appears. However, it is not clear what kind of order parameters are affected by these two procedures. We investigated the crystal structure of CuxTiSe2 and pressurized 1T-TiSe2 around the SC state by synchrotron x-ray diffraction on single crystals. In the high-temperature phase, the variation of structural parameters for the case of Cu intercalation and application of pressure are considerably different. Moreover, the relationship between the critical points of the CDW phase transition and the SC dome are also different for the two cases. The excitonic interaction appears to play an important role in the P-T phase diagram of 1T-TiSe2, but not in the x-T phase diagram., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

By measuring the temperature dependence of the resistance, we investigated the effect of Cu doping on superconductivity (SC) in Cu-doped TaSe$_3$ in which the charge density wave (CDW) transition is induced by Cu doping. We observed an emergence of a region where the SC transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{C}$) decreased in samples with higher Cu concentrations and found that the region tended to expand with increasing Cu concentration. In addition, the temperature dependence of the upper critical field ($H_\mathrm{C2}$) of Cu-doped TaSe$_3$ was found to differ from that of pure TaSe$_3$. Based on these experimental results and the fact that the SC of TaSe$_3$ is filamentary, we conclude that SC is suppressed locally by Cu doping and competes with the CDW in Cu-doped TaSe$_3$. The resistance anomaly due to the CDW transition was extremely small and the size of the anomaly was enhanced with increasing Cu concentration but the temperature at which the anomaly appeared hardly changed. This result of the anomaly and the local suppression of SC imply that the induced CDWs are short-range order in the vicinity of Cu atoms. We have observed a metal-insulator transition of a quasi-two dimensional electronic system in transition metal dichalcogenide $2H$-TaSe$_2$ caused by doping iron. The sheet resistance of $2H$-Fe$_x$TaSe$_2$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.120$) single crystals rises about $10^6$ times with the increasing of $x$ at the lowest temperature. We investigated the temperature dependence of the resistance and found a metal-insulator transition with a critical sheet resistance $11.7 \pm 5.4$ k$\rm{\Omega}$. The critical exponent of the localization length $\nu$ is estimated $0.31 \pm 0.18$. The values of the critical sheet resistance and $\nu$ are accordant to those of the \textit{chiral unitary class} (less than $h/1.49e^2=17.3$ k$\rm{\Omega}$ and $0.35 \pm 0.03$, respectively). We suggest that $2H$-Fe$_x$TaSe$_2$ is classified as the chiral unitary class, not as standard unitary class., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures
