Pulpal involvement, secondary to dental caries, is not uncommon and is a challenging task for pediatric dentists. Morphological differences in root canal of deciduous teeth increases the complexity of management. The aim of this study was to compare two rotary file systems and hand instrumentation for root canal preparation in regard to canal transportation, centering ability ratio, and dentin thickness using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).A total of 72 canals from 24 freshly extracted mandibular deciduous second molars were divided into a set of 8 teeth, then prepared using 2 rotary files systems: the Kedo-S pediatric file system (Group A) and Pro AF Baby Gold file system (Group B) were compared to hand instrumentation (Group C). CBCT scans before and after root canal preparation were used to evaluate tested parameters. Instrumentation time for all three techniques was also measured using a chronometer.Although rotary file systems have shown superior results in root canal preparation as compared to hand instrumentation, no significant differences were observed between all the groups for canal transportation and dentin thickness at all three levels of prepared canals. A comparison of centering ability ratio between all the groups was found to be statistically significant only at the cervical level. A significant difference was observed between hand instrumentation using K-files (117.3 s) and both rotary systems (Kedo-S (81 s) and Pro AF Baby Gold (81.5 s)) in terms of canal preparation time (P0.001).Both tested rotary systems and hand instrumentation demonstrated comparable canal preparation results, with differences that were statistically non-significant in most tested parameters, without shaping errors. However, both the rotary systems were more efficient and faster than hand instrumentation.

Objectives: Multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) were compared regarding their ability to detect vertical root fractures. Methods: Sixty four extracted posterior teeth were included in this study. Using a diamond disc, thirty six teeth were cut vertically to simulate a VRF. Twenty eight teeth were used as control. Fractured and non-fractured teeth were randomly positioned in 4 skulls and mandibles. Scanning was performed first on a 16 slice Siemens MDCT, then by i-CAT Next Generation CBCT. Two observers assessed the multiplanar images for vertical root fractures using a 3-point scale. The first observer repeated the assessment after 1 week. Later, the 2 observers re-assessed the images together to reach a consensus score. Results: CBCT showed higher sensitivity, accuracy as well as negative predictive value compared to MDCT. The mean area under the curve was 0.917 for MDCT and 0.972 for CBCT. The difference in diagnostic accuracy between the 2 modalities was statistically significant P = .036. Inter-observer agreement was 0.971 for MDCT and 0.994 for CBCT, whereas intra-observer agreement was 0.981 for MDCT and 0.985 for CBCT. Conclusion: Using the specified scanners at the specified exposure parameters, the diagnostic accuracy of CBCT in detecting vertical root fractures was significantly higher than MDCT. Prior research has shown that students' previous grade point average (GPA) is the best predictor for future academic success. However, it can only partly predict the variability in dental school performance. The aim of this study was to assess the predictive value of multiple mini-interviews (MMI) as an admission criterion by comparing them with the academic performance of dental students over a two-year period. All incoming undergraduate dental students at the King Abdulaziz University Faculty of Dentistry (KAUFD) during academic year 2013-14 were invited to participate in MMI. Students rotated through six objective structured clinical exam (OSCE)-like stations for 30 minutes total and were interviewed by two trained faculty interviewers at each station. The stations were focused on noncognitive skills thought to be essential to academic performance at KAUFD. The academic performance of these students was then followed for two years and linked to their MMI scores. A total of 146 students (71 males and 75 females) participated in an interview (response rate=92.9%). Most students scored in the acceptable range at each MMI station. Introduction: Understanding the changes in bone density of patients affected by aggressive periodontitis could be useful in early disease detection and proper treatment planning. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare alveolar bone density in patients affected with aggressive periodontitis and periodontally healthy individuals using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 20 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of aggressive periodontitis. Twenty periodontally healthy patients attending the dental clinics for implant placement or extraction of impacted third molars served as controls. Alveolar bone density was measured using CBCT scanning. Comparisons between aggressive periodontitis group and controls for age and alveolar bone density of the anterior and posterior regions were performed using an independent sample t-test. Background: Understanding the anatomical variations in the position of the mental foramen is significant for different dental procedures. This study identified the position of the mental foramen among a Saudi population in the western region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A total of 950 panoramic radiographs (PAN) were selected from a total of 1195 radiographs. The mental foramen location was determined by drawing imaginary lines parallel with the long access of the lower premolars and mesial root of the first molar on the same side. The mental foramen location was then classified into six classes (Class I-VI). Results: In the Saudi population, more than half of the mental foramina were located between the lower premolars (Class III, 57.89%), followed by class IV (41.70%) of the mental foramen was located under the second premolar apex. None of the radiographs showed that the mental foramen was located in front of the first premolar (Class I). Conclusion: For successful and secure mental nerve blocking, the anesthetic solution should be injected between the first and second premolars or under the lower 2nd premolar in the Saudi population. Additionally, caution should be taken when operating close to these areas to avoid mental nerve injury.

To examine the relationship between dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) gray scale values and Hounsfield units (HU), and whether the gray values of edentulous sites correlate with the subjective clinical bone quality assessed at surgery.Two radiographic phantoms containing varying concentrations of either dipotassium hydrogen phosphate or calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) were imaged using multislice CT or CBCT. Reconstructed DICOM data were analyzed to examine the relationship between CBCT gray values and HU. Presurgical CBCT scans from 52 patients who underwent implant placement in the posterior sextants were used. The gray values of the edentulous implant sites were measured and compared with the subjective bone quality assessed at surgery.There was a strong correlation between CBCT gray values and HU. CBCT gray values increased linearly with increasing calcium HA or bone equivalent density material. CBCT gray values measured at edentulous implant sites ranged from -455 to 642, with a trend of decreasing gray values with bone quality type. The median gray values for the four subjective bone types were: 362 (type 1), 214 (type 2), 76 (type 3), and -454 (type 4).CBCT gray values can be used to infer bone density and may provide a valuable aid to predict bone quality at potential implant sites.

This review assessed the most up-to-date literature on the accuracy of detecting vertical root fractures (VRFs] using the currently available diagnostic imaging methods. In addition, an overview of the biological and clinical aspects of VRFs will also be discussed. A systematic review of the literature was initiated in December of 2015 and then updated in May of 2016. The electronic databases searched included PubMed, Emabse, Ovid, and Google Scholar. An assessment of the methodological quality was performed using a modified version of the quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies tool. Twenty-two studies were included in this systematic review after applying specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of those, 12 favored using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for detecting VRF as compared to periapical radiographs, whereas 5 reported no differences between the two methods. The remaining 5 studies confirmed the advantages associated with using CBCT when diagnosing VRF and described the parameters and limitations associated with this method, but they were not comparative studies. In conclusion, overwhelming evidence suggests that the use of CBCT is a preferred method for detecting VRFs. Nevertheless, additional well controlled and high quality studies are needed to produce solid evidence and guidelines to support the routine use of CBCT in the diagnosis of VRFs as a standard of care.
