Omnidirectional (360-degree) video is rapidly gaining popularity due to advancements in immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR). However, real-time streaming of such videos, especially in live mobile scenarios like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), is challenged by limited bandwidth and strict latency constraints. Traditional methods, such as compression and adaptive resolution, help but often compromise video quality and introduce artifacts that degrade the viewer experience. Additionally, the unique spherical geometry of 360-degree video presents challenges not encountered in traditional 2D video. To address these issues, we initiated the 360-degree Video Super Resolution and Quality Enhancement Challenge. This competition encourages participants to develop efficient machine learning solutions to enhance the quality of low-bitrate compressed 360-degree videos, with two tracks focusing on 2x and 4x super-resolution (SR). In this paper, we outline the challenge framework, detailing the two competition tracks and highlighting the SR solutions proposed by the top-performing models. We assess these models within a unified framework, considering quality enhancement, bitrate gain, and computational efficiency. The fall 2023 and spring 2024 undergraduate enrollment increases, marking the first growth since the COVID-19 pandemic, show signs of a post-pandemic turnaround for higher education. However, a significant share of current undergraduates will eventually disengage from college before earning a degree or other credential. They will join tens of millions of other adult Americans who are Some College, No Credential (SCNC). The SCNC population has been consistently rising over time. Re-engaging those who stop out remains a persistent challenge and a priority for the forty states that have set ambitious postsecondary attainment goals. This report aims to provide timely insights into the SCNC population, offering state leaders and policymakers accurate data on its current status, along with tracking progress and outcome measures for SCNC students. The first section of this report describes who makes up the SCNC population and how it has changed since the last report. In this section, the authors pay particular attention to Recent Stopouts, who joined the SCNC population after being stopped out between January 2021 and July 2022. In the second section, the authors report on SCNC re-enrollment in the 2022-23 academic year as well as first-year credential earning for re-enrollees. The authors also provide new updates on continued enrollment and second-year credential earning for SCNC re-enrollees in the 2021-22 academic year, whom were first reported on last year.

Network slicing is a key enabler for providing a differentiated service support to heterogeneous use cases and applications in 5G and beyond networks through creating multiple logical slices. Resource allocation for satisfying diverse requirements of slices is a highly challenging task under time-varying traffic and wireless channel conditions. This paper presents a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach for allocating radio resources to slices, where the objective is to meet the latency requirement of the low-latency slice without jeopardizing the performance of the other slice. The proposed DRL approach is implemented within an open source mobile network emulator, namely OpenAirInterface, to create an O-RAN compliant end-to-end 5G network capable of dynamic resource allocation capabilities. The intelligent resource allocation mechanism operates on the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) as an xApp, enabling monitoring and dynamic resource control of the gNB through the E2 interface. This paper evaluates the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) optimization algorithms, which utilize channel estimation methods, in ray tracing (RT) simulations within urban digital twin environments. Beyond Sionna's native capabilities, we implement and benchmark additional RIS optimization algorithms based on channel estimation, enabling an evaluation of RIS strategies under various deployment conditions. Coverage maps for RIS-assisted communication systems are generated through the integration of Sionna's RT simulations. Assuming that a L\'evy-Driven Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (or CAR(1)) processes is observed at discrete times $0$, $h$, $2h$,$\cdots$ $[T/h]h$. Here we introduced a step-by-step methodological approach on how a person would verify the model assumptions supported by real-life data examples using this methodology. The model parameter needs to be estimated and the driving process must be approximated. Approximated increments with estimated parameter of the driving process are used to test the assumptions that the CAR(1) process is L\'evy-driven. The diversity of 2D materials and their van der Waals (vdW) stacking presents a fertile ground for engineering novel multifunctional materials and quantum states of matter. This permits unique opportunities to tailor the electronic properties of vdW heterostructures by the insertion of only a single 2D material layer. However, such vdW materials engineering at the atomic scale has yet to be investigated for spin-charge interconversion phenomena. Here, we report on the control of these effects at the monolayer level, where drastic increase in intensity and change in sign of THz spintronic emission are demonstrated by inserting a single layer of MoSe$_2$ between PtSe$_2$ and graphene in a fully epitaxial, large area stacked structure. By using a combination of spin and angle resolved photoemission and density functional theory to reveal the electronic and spin structures, we illustrate two different mechanisms relying on charge transfer and electronic hybridization for the formation of Rashba states, which are responsible for spin-charge conversion and hence the THz spintronic emission. These findings open new pathways to design, at the atomic scale, efficient THz spintronic emitters made of 2D materials and other spintronic devices based on spin-charge interconversion phenomena., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Digit-serial arithmetic has emerged as a viable approach for designing hardware accelerators, reducing interconnections, area utilization, and power consumption. However, conventional methods suffer from performance and latency issues. To address these challenges, we propose an accelerator design using left-to-right (LR) arithmetic, which performs computations in a most-significant digit first (MSDF) manner, enabling digit-level pipelining. This leads to substantial performance improvements and reduced latency. The processing engine is designed for convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which includes low-latency LR multipliers and adders for digit-level parallelism. The proposed DSLR-CNN is implemented in Verilog and synthesized with Synopsys design compiler using GSCL 45nm technology, the DSLR-CNN accelerator was evaluated on AlexNet, VGG-16, and ResNet-18 networks. Results show significant improvements across key performance evaluation metrics, including response time, peak performance, power consumption, operational intensity, area efficiency, and energy efficiency. The peak performance measured in GOPS of the proposed design is 4.37x to 569.11x higher than contemporary designs, and it achieved 3.58x to 44.75x higher peak energy efficiency (TOPS/W), outperforming conventional bit-serial designs., Comment: Published in IEEE Access Volume 12, 2024

As large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 and Llama 3 become integral to educational contexts, concerns are mounting over the cultural biases, power imbalances, and ethical limitations embedded within these technologies. Though generative AI tools aim to enhance learning experiences, they often reflect values rooted in Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) cultural paradigms, potentially sidelining diverse global perspectives. This paper proposes a framework to assess and mitigate cultural bias within LLMs through the lens of applied multiplexity. Multiplexity, inspired by Senturk et al. and rooted in Islamic and other wisdom traditions, emphasizes the coexistence of diverse cultural viewpoints, supporting a multi-layered epistemology that integrates both empirical sciences and normative values. Our analysis reveals that LLMs frequently exhibit cultural polarization, with biases appearing in both overt responses and subtle contextual cues. To address inherent biases and incorporate multiplexity in LLMs, we propose two strategies: \textit{Contextually-Implemented Multiplex LLMs}, which embed multiplex principles directly into the system prompt, influencing LLM outputs at a foundational level and independent of individual prompts, and \textit{Multi-Agent System (MAS)-Implemented Multiplex LLMs}, where multiple LLM agents, each representing distinct cultural viewpoints, collaboratively generate a balanced, synthesized response. Our findings demonstrate that as mitigation strategies evolve from contextual prompting to MAS-implementation, cultural inclusivity markedly improves, evidenced by a significant rise in the Perspectives Distribution Score (PDS) and a PDS Entropy increase from 3.25\% at baseline to 98\% with the MAS-Implemented Multiplex LLMs. Sentiment analysis further shows a shift towards positive sentiment across cultures,...

In this paper, we show that the value functions of mean field control problems with common noise are the unique viscosity solutions to fully second-order Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, in a Crandall-Lions-like framework. We allow the second-order derivative in measure to be state-dependent and thus infinite-dimensional, rather than derived from a finite-dimensional operator, hence the term ''fully''. Our argument leverages the construction of smooth approximations from particle systems developed by Cosso, Gozzi, Kharroubi, Pham, and Rosestolato [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 2023], and the compactness argument via penalization of measure moments in Soner and Yan [Appl. Math. Optim., 2024]. Multi-Agent Large Language Models (LLMs) are gaining significant attention for their ability to harness collective intelligence in complex problem-solving, decision-making, and planning tasks. This aligns with the concept of the wisdom of crowds, where diverse agents contribute collectively to generating effective solutions, making it particularly suitable for educational settings. Senior design projects, also known as capstone or final year projects, are pivotal in engineering education as they integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving skills. In this paper, we explore the use of Multi-Agent LLMs in supporting these senior design projects undertaken by engineering students, which often involve multidisciplinary considerations and conflicting objectives, such as optimizing technical performance while addressing ethical, social, and environmental concerns. We propose a framework where distinct LLM agents represent different expert perspectives, such as problem formulation agents, system complexity agents, societal and ethical agents, or project managers, thus facilitating a holistic problem-solving approach. This implementation leverages standard multi-agent system (MAS) concepts such as coordination, cooperation, and negotiation, incorporating prompt engineering to develop diverse personas for each agent. These agents engage in rich, collaborative dialogues to simulate human engineering teams, guided by principles from swarm AI to efficiently balance individual contributions towards a unified solution. There is a growing interest in codebook-based beam-steering for millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems due to its potential for low complexity and rapid beam search. A key focus of recent research has been the design of codebooks that strike a trade-off between achievable gain and codebook size, which directly impacts beam search time. Statistical approaches have shown promise by leveraging the likelihood that certain beam directions (equivalently, sets of phase-shifter configurations) are more probable than others. Such approaches are shown to be valid for static, non-rotating transmission stations such as base stations. However, for the case of user terminals that are constantly changing orientation, the possible phase-shifter configurations become equally probable, rendering statistical methods less relevant. On the other hand, user terminals come with a large number of possible steering vector configurations, which can span up to six orders of magnitude. Therefore, efficient solutions to reduce the codebook size (set of possible steering vectors) without compromising array gain are needed. We address this challenge by proposing a novel and practical codebook refinement technique, aiming to reduce the codebook size while maintaining array gain within $\gamma$ dB of the maximum achievable gain at any random orientation of the user terminal. We project that a steering vector at a given angle could effectively cover adjacent angles with a small gain loss compared to the maximum achievable gain. This study evaluates the performance of several Large Language Models (LLMs) on MedRedQA, a dataset of consumer-based medical questions and answers by verified experts extracted from the AskDocs subreddit. While LLMs have shown proficiency in clinical question answering (QA) benchmarks, their effectiveness on real-world, consumer-based, medical questions remains less understood. MedRedQA presents unique challenges, such as informal language and the need for precise responses suited to non-specialist queries. To assess model performance, responses were generated using five LLMs: GPT-4o mini, Llama 3.1: 70B, Mistral-123B, Mistral-7B, and Gemini-Flash. A cross-evaluation method was used, where each model evaluated its responses as well as those of others to minimize bias. The results indicated that GPT-4o mini achieved the highest alignment with expert responses according to four out of the five models' judges, while Mistral-7B scored lowest according to three out of five models' judges. This study highlights the potential and limitations of current LLMs for consumer health medical question answering, indicating avenues for further development.

Air pollution in cities, especially NO\textsubscript{2}, is linked to numerous health problems, ranging from mortality to mental health challenges and attention deficits in children. While cities globally have initiated policies to curtail emissions, real-time monitoring remains challenging due to limited environmental sensors and their inconsistent distribution. This gap hinders the creation of adaptive urban policies that respond to the sequence of events and daily activities affecting pollution in cities. Here, we demonstrate how city CCTV cameras can act as a pseudo-NO\textsubscript{2} sensors. Using a predictive graph deep model, we utilised traffic flow from London's cameras in addition to environmental and spatial factors, generating NO\textsubscript{2} predictions from over 133 million frames. Our analysis of London's mobility patterns unveiled critical spatiotemporal connections, showing how specific traffic patterns affect NO\textsubscript{2} levels, sometimes with temporal lags of up to 6 hours. For instance, if trucks only drive at night, their effects on NO\textsubscript{2} levels are most likely to be seen in the morning when people commute. These findings cast doubt on the efficacy of some of the urban policies currently being implemented to reduce pollution. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) enables the sharing of cryptographic keys secured by quantum mechanics. The BB84 protocol assumed single-photon sources, but practical systems rely on weak coherent pulses vulnerable to photon-number-splitting (PNS) attacks. The Gottesman-Lo-L\"utkenhaus-Preskill (GLLP) framework addressed these imperfections, deriving secure key rate bounds under limited PNS. The Decoy-state protocol further improved performance by refining single-photon yield estimates, but still considered multi-photon states as insecure, limiting intensities and thereby constraining key rate and distance. Here, we show that higher intensities can be securely permitted by applying Bayesian inference to estimate key parameters directly from observed data rather than relying on worst-case assumptions. By raising the pulse intensity to 10 photons, we achieve 50 times the key rate and a 62.2% increase in operational range (about 200 km) compared to the decoy-state protocol. Furthermore, we accurately model after-pulsing using a Hidden Markov Model and reveal inaccuracies in decoy-state calculations that may produce erroneous key-rate estimates. By bridging theoretical security and real-world conditions, this Bayesian methodology provides a versatile post-processing step for many discrete-variable QKD protocols, advancing their reach, efficiency, and facilitating broader adoption of quantum-secured communication.

Understanding road topology is crucial for autonomous driving. This paper introduces TopoBDA (Topology with Bezier Deformable Attention), a novel approach that enhances road topology understanding by leveraging Bezier Deformable Attention (BDA). BDA utilizes Bezier control points to drive the deformable attention mechanism, significantly improving the detection and representation of elongated and thin polyline structures, such as lane centerlines. TopoBDA processes multi-camera 360-degree imagery to generate Bird's Eye View (BEV) features, which are refined through a transformer decoder employing BDA. This method enhances computational efficiency while maintaining high accuracy in centerline prediction. Additionally, TopoBDA incorporates an instance mask formulation and an auxiliary one-to-many set prediction loss strategy to further refine centerline detection and improve road topology understanding. Experimental evaluations on the OpenLane-V2 dataset demonstrate that TopoBDA outperforms existing methods, achieving state-of-the-art results in centerline detection and topology reasoning. Lumbar disk segmentation is essential for diagnosing and curing spinal disorders by enabling precise detection of disk boundaries in medical imaging. The advent of deep learning has resulted in the development of many segmentation methods, offering differing levels of accuracy and effectiveness. This study assesses the effectiveness of several sophisticated deep learning architectures, including ResUnext, Ef3 Net, UNet, and TransUNet, for lumbar disk segmentation, highlighting key metrics like as Pixel Accuracy, Mean Intersection over Union (Mean IoU), and Dice Coefficient. The findings indicate that ResUnext achieved the highest segmentation accuracy, with a Pixel Accuracy of 0.9492 and a Dice Coefficient of 0.8425, with TransUNet following closely after. Filtering techniques somewhat enhanced the performance of most models, particularly Dense UNet, improving stability and segmentation quality. This paper investigates the use of Evidence Theory to enhance the training efficiency of object detection models by incorporating uncertainty into the feedback loop. In each training iteration, during the validation phase, Evidence Theory is applied to establish a relationship between ground truth labels and predictions. The Dempster-Shafer rule of combination is used to quantify uncertainty based on the evidence from these predictions. This uncertainty measure is then utilized to weight the feedback loss for the subsequent iteration, allowing the model to adjust its learning dynamically. By experimenting with various uncertainty-weighting strategies, this study aims to determine the most effective method for optimizing feedback to accelerate the training process. The results demonstrate that using uncertainty-based feedback not only reduces training time but can also enhance model performance compared to traditional approaches. This research offers insights into the role of uncertainty in improving machine learning workflows, particularly in object detection, and suggests broader applications for uncertainty-driven training across other AI disciplines.

In this paper, we revisit the problem of classifying real algebraic and semialgebraic sets by their topological types, focusing on establishing the effectiveness of bounds rather than deriving new quantitative estimates. Building on Hardt's theorem and leveraging a model-theoretic framework, we prove the existence of effective bounds on the number of distinct topological types for real algebraic sets defined by polynomials of bounded degree. While less precise than previously known doubly exponential bounds derived from methods such as Stratified Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition, our results are obtained with minimal additional work, emphasizing simplicity and uniformity. Additionally, we establish the existence of an effective bound on the complexity of the semialgebraic homeomorphisms that describe representatives of the topological equivalence classes, offering a novel perspective on their explicit classification. These findings complement existing results by demonstrating the effectiveness of uniform bounds within a logical and geometric framework. The paper concludes with an extension of these results to semialgebraic sets of bounded complexity, further emphasizing the uniformity of the approach across varying real closed fields.

Cell detection and segmentation are integral parts of automated systems in digital pathology. Encoder-decoder networks have emerged as a promising solution for these tasks. However, training of these networks has typically required full boundary annotations of cells, which are labor-intensive and difficult to obtain on a large scale. However, in many applications, such as cell counting, weaker forms of annotations--such as point annotations or approximate cell counts--can provide sufficient supervision for training. This study proposes a new mixed-supervision approach for training multitask networks in digital pathology by incorporating cell counts derived from the eyeballing process--a quick visual estimation method commonly used by pathologists. This study has two main contributions: (1) It proposes a mixed-supervision strategy for digital pathology that utilizes cell counts obtained by eyeballing as an auxiliary supervisory signal to train a multitask network for the first time. (2) This multitask network is designed to concurrently learn the tasks of cell counting and cell localization, and this study introduces a consistency loss that regularizes training by penalizing inconsistencies between the predictions of these two tasks. Our experiments on two datasets of hematoxylin-eosin stained tissue images demonstrate that the proposed approach effectively utilizes the weakest form of annotation, improving performance when stronger annotations are limited. These results highlight the potential of integrating eyeballing-derived ground truths into the network training, reducing the need for resource-intensive annotations.

Generating a bird's eye view of road users is beneficial for a variety of applications, including navigation, detecting agent conflicts, and measuring space occupancy, as well as the ability to utilise the metric system to measure distances between different objects. In this research, we introduce a simple approach for estimating a bird's eye view from images without prior knowledge of a given camera's intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. The model is based on the orthogonal projection of objects from various fields of view to a bird's eye view by learning the vanishing point of a given scene. Additionally, we utilised the learned vanishing point alongside the trajectory line to transform the 2D bounding boxes of road users into 3D bounding information. The introduced framework has been applied to several applications to generate a live Map from camera feeds and to analyse social distancing violations at the city scale. The introduced framework shows a high validation in geolocating road users in various uncalibrated cameras. How effective is peer-reviewing in identifying important papers? We treat this question as a forecasting task. Can we predict which papers will be highly cited in the future based on venue and "early returns" (citations soon after publication)? We show early returns are more predictive than venue. In the quest to overcome language barriers, encoder-decoder models like NLLB have expanded machine translation to rare languages, with some models (e.g., NLLB 1.3B) even trainable on a single GPU. While general-purpose LLMs perform well in translation, open LLMs prove highly competitive when fine-tuned for specific tasks involving unknown corpora. We introduce LYRA (Language verY Rare for All), a novel approach that combines open LLM fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and transfer learning from related high-resource languages. This study is exclusively focused on single-GPU training to facilitate ease of adoption. Our study focuses on two-way translation between French and Mon\'egasque, a rare language unsupported by existing translation tools due to limited corpus availability. Our results demonstrate LYRA's effectiveness, frequently surpassing and consistently matching state-of-the-art encoder-decoder models in rare language translation.

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are crucial in various applications, but their deployment on resource-constrained edge devices poses challenges. This study presents the Sum-of-Products (SOP) units for convolution, which utilize low-latency left-to-right bit-serial arithmetic to minimize response time and enhance overall performance. The study proposes a methodology for fusing multiple convolution layers to reduce off-chip memory communication and increase overall performance. An effective mechanism detects and skips inefficient convolutions after ReLU layers, minimizing power consumption without compromising accuracy. Furthermore, efficient tile movement guarantees uniform access to the fusion pyramid. An analysis demonstrates the utile stride strategy improves operational intensity. Two designs cater to varied demands: one focuses on minimal response time for mission-critical applications, and another focuses on resource-constrained devices with comparable latency. This approach notably reduced redundant computations, improving the efficiency of CNN deployment on edge devices.

Today, crop diversification in agriculture is a critical issue to meet the increasing demand for food and improve food safety and quality. This issue is considered to be the most important challenge for the next generation of agriculture due to the diminishing natural resources, the limited arable land, and unpredictable climatic conditions caused by climate change. In this paper, we employ emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning (ML), and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to improve operational efficiency and productivity in the agricultural sector. Specifically, we propose an edge computing-based explainable crop recommendation system, AgroXAI, which suggests suitable crops for a region based on weather and soil conditions. In this system, we provide local and global explanations of ML model decisions with methods such as ELI5, LIME, SHAP, which we integrate into ML models. More importantly, we provide regional alternative crop recommendations with the counterfactual explainability method. Ubiquity of AI coupled with its steep power demands make optimizing GPU power a priority as large GPU-based clusters are often employed to train and serve AI models. An important first step in optimizing GPU power consumption is high-fidelity and fine-grain power measurement of key AI computations on GPUs. To this end, we observe that as GPUs get more powerful, the resulting sub-millisecond to millisecond executions make fine-grain power analysis challenging. In this work, we first carefully identify the challenges in obtaining fine-grain GPU power profiles. To address these challenges, we devise FinGraV methodology where we employ execution time binning, careful CPU-GPU time synchronization, and power profile differentiation to collect fine-grain GPU power profiles across prominent AI computations and across spectrum of scenarios. Using FinGraV power profiles, we make several observations pertaining to GPU power variation over executions and over time, GPU sub-component power consumptions across different scenarios, and power behavior over interleaved executions of multiple computations. Equipped with these observations, we conclude with several recommendations to optimize the power for these ubiquitous accelerators.

Time series forecasting is a crucial challenge with significant applications in areas such as weather prediction, stock market analysis, and scientific simulations. This paper introduces an embedded decomposed transformer, 'EDformer', for multivariate time series forecasting tasks. Without altering the fundamental elements, we reuse the Transformer architecture and consider the capable functions of its constituent parts in this work. Edformer first decomposes the input multivariate signal into seasonal and trend components. Next, the prominent multivariate seasonal component is reconstructed across the reverse dimensions, followed by applying the attention mechanism and feed-forward network in the encoder stage. In particular, the feed-forward network is used for each variable frame to learn nonlinear representations, while the attention mechanism uses the time points of individual seasonal series embedded within variate frames to capture multivariate correlations. Therefore, the trend signal is added with projection and performs the final forecasting. The EDformer model obtains state-of-the-art predicting results in terms of accuracy and efficiency on complex real-world time series datasets. This paper also addresses model explainability techniques to provide insights into how the model makes its predictions and why specific features or time steps are important, enhancing the interpretability and trustworthiness of the forecasting results.

As the use of text-to-image generative models increases, so does the adoption of automatic benchmarking methods used in their evaluation. However, while metrics and datasets abound, there are few unified benchmarking libraries that provide a framework for performing evaluations across many datasets and metrics. Furthermore, the rapid introduction of increasingly robust benchmarking methods requires that evaluation libraries remain flexible to new datasets and metrics. Finally, there remains a gap in synthesizing evaluations in order to deliver actionable takeaways about model performance. To enable unified, flexible, and actionable evaluations, we introduce EvalGIM (pronounced ''EvalGym''), a library for evaluating generative image models. EvalGIM contains broad support for datasets and metrics used to measure quality, diversity, and consistency of text-to-image generative models. In addition, EvalGIM is designed with flexibility for user customization as a top priority and contains a structure that allows plug-and-play additions of new datasets and metrics. To enable actionable evaluation insights, we introduce ''Evaluation Exercises'' that highlight takeaways for specific evaluation questions. The Evaluation Exercises contain easy-to-use and reproducible implementations of two state-of-the-art evaluation methods of text-to-image generative models: consistency-diversity-realism Pareto Fronts and disaggregated measurements of performance disparities across groups. EvalGIM also contains Evaluation Exercises that introduce two new analysis methods for text-to-image generative models: robustness analyses of model rankings and balanced evaluations across different prompt styles. Many classical Be stars acquire their very rapid rotation by mass and angular-momentum transfer in massive binaries. Short-lived intermediate-phase objects have only been discovered recently. Data archives and the literature have been searched for additional candidates exhibiting this patterns. Thirteen candidates were identified at various confidence levels. Adding to the two known systems identified as classical Be star+pre-subdwarf binaries (LB-1 and HR6819), two more (V742Cas, HD44637) could be confirmed with interferometry, with V742Cas setting a new record for the smallest visually observed angular semi-major axis, at a=0.663mas. Two further ones (V447Sct, V1362Cyg) are not resolved interferometrically, but other evidence puts them at the same confidence level as LB-1. V2174Cyg is a candidate with very high confidence, but was not observed interferometrically. The remaining ones are either candidates with varying levels of confidence. Of a mostly magnitude complete sample of 328 Be stars, 0.5-1% are found to have recently completed the mass overflow that led to their formation. Another 5% are systems with compact subdwarf companions, i.e., further evolved after a previous overflow, and possibly two more percent harbor white dwarfs. All these systems are of early B-subtypes, however, and if the original sample is restricted to early subtypes (136 objects), these percentages increase by a factor of about 2.5, while dropping to zero for the mid and late subtypes (together 204 objects). This strongly suggests that early- vs. mid- and late-type Be stars have differently weighted channels to acquire their rapid rotation, namely binary interaction vs. evolutionary spin-up., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A

Dynamic optical coherence tomography (DOCT) statistically analyzes fluctuations in time-sequential OCT signals, enabling label-free and three-dimensional visualization of intratissue and intracellular activities. Current DOCT methods, such as logarithmic intensity variance (LIV) and OCT correlation decay speed (OCDS) have several limitations.Namely, the DOCT values and intratissue motions are not directly related, and hence DOCT values are not interpretable in the context of the tissue motility. We introduce a new DOCT algorithm that provides more direct interpretation of DOCT in the contexts of dynamic scatterer ratio and scatterer speed in the tissue.The detailed properties of the new and conventional DOCT methods are investigated by numerical simulations, and the experimental validation with in vitro and ex vivo samples demonstrates the feasibility of the new method.

Deciding the positivity of a sequence defined by a linear recurrence with polynomial coefficients and initial condition is difficult in general. Even in the case of recurrences with constant coefficients, it is known to be decidable only for order up to~5. We consider a large class of linear recurrences of arbitrary order, with polynomial coefficients, for which an algorithm decides positivity for initial conditions outside of a hyperplane. The underlying algorithm constructs a cone, contracted by the recurrence operator, that allows a proof of positivity by induction. The existence and construction of such cones relies on the extension of the classical Perron-Frobenius theory to matrices leaving a cone invariant., Comment: 26 pages

Nitrous oxide is a long-lived greenhouse gas. Its isotopic composition provides valuable insights into sources and sinks, and about the mechanism of formation. A major challenge in the spectroscopic analysis of the isotopocule compositions is the availability of accurate spectroscopic parameters, particularly for the minor $^{15}$N isotopocules. In this work, we introduce high-resolution spectroscopic measurements of four isotopocules of nitrous oxide: $^{14}$N$_{2}$O, $^{14}$N$^{15}$NO, $^{15}$N$^{14}$NO, and $^{15}$N$_{2}$O in the mid-infrared range of 3300 - 3550 cm$^{-1}$, using a frequency comb-based Fourier transform spectrometer. The nitrous oxide samples were obtained from a chemical synthesis involving acid-catalyzed amine-borane reduction of equimolar amounts of $^{15}$N isotopically enriched sodium nitrite and $^{14}$N sodium nitrite. The high-resolution spectra, measured in a temperature-controlled single-pass absorption cell, were used to retrieve line center frequencies and relative intensities for a total of 426 rovibrational transitions of the ${\nu}$$_{1}$ + ${\nu}$$_{3}$ band of the four isotopocules, and of the one order of magnitude weaker 2${\nu}$$_{2}$ + ${\nu}$$_{3}$ and ${\nu}$$_{1}$ + ${\nu}$$_{2}$ + ${\nu}$$_{3}$ - ${\nu}$$_{2}$ bands in the same spectral region. We compare the determined line center frequencies and relative intensities with spectroscopic parameters available in high-resolution molecular databases. For $^{14}$N$_{2}$O, $^{14}$N$^{15}$NO and $^{15}$N$^{14}$NO we find good agreement with the HITRAN database. The $^{15}$N$_{2}$O isotopocule is missing in HITRAN, and we find that its line center frequencies in the GEISA database, the Institute of Atmospheric Optics database, as well as the Ames-1 line list deviate severely from the comb measurements.

Traditional safety engineering assesses systems in their context of use, e.g. the operational design domain (road layout, speed limits, weather, etc.) for self-driving vehicles (including those using AI). We refer to this as downstream safety. In contrast, work on safety of frontier AI, e.g. large language models which can be further trained for downstream tasks, typically considers factors that are beyond specific application contexts, such as the ability of the model to evade human control, or to produce harmful content, e.g. how to make bombs. We refer to this as upstream safety. We outline the characteristics of both upstream and downstream safety frameworks then explore the extent to which the broad AI safety community can benefit from synergies between these frameworks. For example, can concepts such as common mode failures from downstream safety be used to help assess the strength of AI guardrails? Further, can the understanding of the capabilities and limitations of frontier AI be used to inform downstream safety analysis, e.g. where LLMs are fine-tuned to calculate voyage plans for autonomous vessels? The paper identifies some promising avenues to explore and outlines some challenges in achieving synergy, or a confluence, between upstream and downstream safety frameworks.

Time series forecasting is an important challenge with significant applications in areas such as weather prediction, stock market analysis, scientific simulations and industrial process analysis. In this work, we introduce LMS-AutoTSF, a novel time series forecasting architecture that incorporates autocorrelation while leveraging dual encoders operating at multiple scales. Unlike models that rely on predefined trend and seasonal components, LMS-AutoTSF employs two separate encoders per scale: one focusing on low-pass filtering to capture trends and the other utilizing high-pass filtering to model seasonal variations. These filters are learnable, allowing the model to dynamically adapt and isolate trend and seasonal components directly in the frequency domain. A key innovation in our approach is the integration of autocorrelation, achieved by computing lagged differences in time steps, which enables the model to capture dependencies across time more effectively. Each encoder processes the input through fully connected layers to handle temporal and channel interactions. By combining frequency-domain filtering, autocorrelation-based temporal modeling, and channel-wise transformations, LMS-AutoTSF not only accurately captures long-term dependencies and fine-grained patterns but also operates more efficiently compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Its lightweight design ensures faster processing while maintaining high precision in forecasting across diverse time horizons. In the domain of architectural design, the foundational essence of creativity and human intelligence lies in the mastery of solving floorplans, a skill demanding distinctive expertise and years of experience. Traditionally, the architectural design process of creating floorplans often requires substantial manual labour and architectural expertise. Even when relying on parametric design approaches, the process is limited based on the designer's ability to build a complex set of parameters to iteratively explore design alternatives. As a result, these approaches hinder creativity and limit discovery of an optimal solution. Here, we present a generative latent diffusion model that learns to generate floorplans for various building types based on building footprints and design briefs. The introduced model learns from the complexity of the inter-connections between diverse building types and the mutations of architectural designs. By harnessing the power of latent diffusion models, this research surpasses conventional limitations in the design process. The model's ability to learn from diverse building types means that it cannot only replicate existing designs but also produce entirely new configurations that fuse design elements in unexpected ways. This innovation introduces a new dimension of creativity into architectural design, allowing architects, urban planners and even individuals without specialised expertise to explore uncharted territories of form and function with speed and cost-effectiveness., Comment: 17

Our goal is to develop an AI Partner that can provide support for group problem solving and social dynamics. In multi-party working group environments, multimodal analytics is crucial for identifying non-verbal interactions of group members. In conjunction with their verbal participation, this creates an holistic understanding of collaboration and engagement that provides necessary context for the AI Partner. Despite their remarkable success in language modeling, transformers trained to predict the next token in a sequence struggle with long-term planning. This limitation is particularly evident in tasks requiring foresight to plan multiple steps ahead such as maze navigation. The standard next single token prediction objective, however, offers no explicit mechanism to predict multiple steps ahead - or revisit the path taken so far. Consequently, in this work we study whether explicitly predicting multiple steps ahead (and backwards) can improve transformers' maze navigation. We train parameter-matched transformers from scratch, under identical settings, to navigate mazes of varying types and sizes with standard next token prediction and MLM-U, an objective explicitly predicting multiple steps ahead and backwards. We find that MLM-U considerably improves transformers' ability to navigate mazes compared to standard next token prediction across maze types and complexities. We also find MLM-U training is 4x more sample efficient and converges 2x faster in terms of GPU training hours relative to next token training. Finally, for more complex mazes we find MLM-U benefits from scaling to larger transformers. Remarkably, we find transformers trained with MLM-U outperform larger transformers trained with next token prediction using additional supervision from A* search traces. We hope these findings underscore the promise of learning objectives to advance transformers' capacity for long-term planning. In the last few decades, ultrafast demagnetization elicited by ultrashort laser pulses has been the subject of a large body of work that aims to better understand and control this phenomenon. Although specific magnetic materials' properties play a key role in defining ultrafast demagnetization dynamics, features of the driving laser pulse such as its duration and photon energy might also contribute. Here, we report ultrafast demagnetization of a cobalt/platinum multilayer in a broad spectral range spanning from the near-infrared (near-IR) to the mid-infrared (mid-IR), with wavelengths between 0.8 and 8.7 $\mu$m. The ultrafast dynamics of the macroscopic magnetization is tracked via the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. We show that the ultrafast demagnetization of the sample can be efficiently induced over that entire excitation spectrum with minimal dependence on the excitation wavelength. Instead, we confirm that the temporal profile of the pump excitation pulse is an important factor influencing ultrafast demagnetization dynamics.

We present a detailed spectroscopic study of the $^4\mathrm{I}_{13/2}$ and $^4\mathrm{I}_{15/2}$ Er$^{3+}$ multiplets of Er:CaWO$_4$ grown without a co-dopant. Using photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation measurements, we find multiple environments into which the Erbium ions are incorporated in the crystal. For the four most prevalent environments, we provide a complete assignment of the $^4\mathrm{I}_{13/2}$ and $^4\mathrm{I}_{15/2}$ sublevel energies. Polarization-dependent absorption and emission spectroscopy allow us to identify the irreducible representations of the states and determine the dipole nature of transitions. In addition, we compare the different relaxation paths within $^4\mathrm{I}_{13/2}$ and $^4\mathrm{I}_{15/2}$ multiplets via line broadening and lifetime measurements. Finally, spectral, lifetime, and polarization measurements indicate similarities between the studied environments.

PaliGemma 2 is an upgrade of the PaliGemma open Vision-Language Model (VLM) based on the Gemma 2 family of language models. We combine the SigLIP-So400m vision encoder that was also used by PaliGemma with the whole range of Gemma 2 models, from the 2B one all the way up to the 27B model. We train these models at three resolutions (224px, 448px, and 896px) in multiple stages to equip them with broad knowledge for transfer via fine-tuning. The resulting family of base models covering different model sizes and resolutions allows us to investigate factors impacting transfer performance (such as learning rate) and to analyze the interplay between the type of task, model size, and resolution. We further increase the number and breadth of transfer tasks beyond the scope of PaliGemma including different OCR-related tasks such as table structure recognition, molecular structure recognition, music score recognition, as well as long fine-grained captioning and radiography report generation, on which PaliGemma 2 obtains state-of-the-art results.

In this paper, we consider a general partially observed diffusion model with periodic coefficients and with non-degenerate diffusion component. The coefficients of such a model depend on an unknown (static and deterministic) parameter which needs to be estimated based on the observed component of the diffusion process. We show that, under a minimal assumption of identifiability, and given enough regularity of the diffusion coefficients, a maximum likelihood estimator of the unknown parameter converges to the true parameter value as the sample size grows to infinity., Comment: A typo in the authors' names has been corrected

In autonomous navigation, trajectory replanning, refinement, and control command generation are essential for effective motion planning. This paper presents a resilient approach to trajectory replanning addressing scenarios where the initial planner's solution becomes infeasible. The proposed method incorporates a hybrid A* algorithm to generate feasible trajectories when the primary planner fails and applies a soft constraints-based smoothing technique to refine these trajectories, ensuring continuity, obstacle avoidance, and kinematic feasibility. Obstacle constraints are modelled using a dynamic Voronoi map to improve navigation through narrow passages. This approach enhances the consistency of trajectory planning, speeds up convergence, and meets real-time computational requirements. In environments with around 30\% or higher obstacle density, the ratio of free space before and after placing new obstacles, the Resilient Timed Elastic Band (RTEB) planner achieves approximately 20\% reduction in traverse distance, traverse time, and control effort compared to the Timed Elastic Band (TEB) planner and Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) planner. These improvements demonstrate the RTEB planner's potential for application in field robotics, particularly in agricultural and industrial environments, where navigating unstructured terrain is crucial for ensuring efficiency and operational resilience.

Solvation free energy is an important design parameter in reaction kinetics and separation processes, making it a critical property to predict during process development. In previous research, directed message passing neural networks (D-MPNN) have successfully been used to predict solvation free energies and enthalpies in organic solvents. However, solvent mixtures provide greater flexibility for optimizing solvent interactions than monosolvents. This work aims to extend our previous models to mixtures. To handle mixtures in a permutation invariant manner we propose a pooling function; MolPool. With this pooling function, the machine learning models can learn and predict properties for an arbitrary number of molecules. The novel SolProp-mix software that applies MolPool to D-MPNN was compared to state-of-the-art architectures for predicting mixture properties and validated with our new database of COSMOtherm calculations; BinarySolv-QM. To improve predictions towards experimental accuracy, the network was then fine-tuned on experimental data in monosolvents. To demonstrate the benefit of this transfer learning methodology, experimental datasets of solvation free energies in binary (BinarySolv-Exp) and ternary (TernarySolv-Exp) solvent mixtures were compiled from data on vapor-liquid equilibria and activity coefficients. The neural network performed better than COSMOtherm calculations with an MAE of 0.25 kcal/mol and an RMSE of 0.37 kcal/mol for non-aqueous mixed solvents. Additionally, the ability to capture trends for a varying mixture composition was validated successfully. Our model's ability to accurately predict mixture properties from the combination of in silico data and pure component experimental data is promising given the scarcity of experimental data for mixtures in many fields.

In this study, we investigate the impact of new LHC inclusive jet and dijet measurements on parton distribution functions (PDFs) that describe the proton structure, with a particular focus on the gluon distribution at large momentum fraction, $x$, and the corresponding partonic luminosities. We assess constraints from these datasets using next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) theoretical predictions, accounting for a range of uncertainties from scale dependence and numerical integration. From the scale choices available for the calculations, our analysis shows that the central predictions for inclusive jet production show a smaller scale dependence than dijet production. We examine the relative constraints on the gluon distribution provided by the inclusive jet and dijet distributions and also explore the phenomenological implications for inclusive $H$, $t\bar{t}$, and $t\bar{t}H$ production at the LHC at 14 TeV., Comment: 37 pages, 20 figures, 8 tables

Social media platforms play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and amplifying political discourse, particularly during elections. However, the same dynamics that foster democratic engagement can also exacerbate polarization. To better understand these challenges, here, we investigate the ideological positioning of tweets related to the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. To this end, we analyze 1,235 tweets from key political figures and 63,322 replies, and classify ideological stances into Pro-Democrat, Anti-Republican, Pro-Republican, Anti-Democrat, and Neutral categories. Using a classification pipeline involving three large language models (LLMs)-GPT-4o, Gemini-Pro, and Claude-Opus-and validated by human annotators, we explore how ideological alignment varies between candidates and constituents. We find that Republican candidates author significantly more tweets in criticism of the Democratic party and its candidates than vice versa, but this relationship does not hold for replies to candidate tweets. Furthermore, we highlight shifts in public discourse observed during key political events. By shedding light on the ideological dynamics of online political interactions, these results provide insights for policymakers and platforms seeking to address polarization and foster healthier political dialogue., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

This paper presents a novel graph-based method for adapting control system architectures at runtime. We use a service-oriented architecture as a basis for its formulation. In our method, adaptation is achieved by selecting the most suitable elements, such as filters and controllers, for a control system architecture to improve control systems objective based on a predefined cost function. Traditional configuration methods, such as state machines, lack flexibility and depend on a predefined control system architecture during runtime. Our graph-based method allows for dynamic changes in the control system architecture, as well as a change in its objective depending on the given system state. Our approach uses a weighted, directed graph to model the control system elements and their interaction. In a case-study with a three-tank system, we show that by using our graph-based method for architecture adaptation, the control system is more flexible, has lower computation time, and higher accuracy than traditional configuration methods., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

As the interest in multi- and many-objective optimization algorithms grows, the performance comparison of these algorithms becomes increasingly important. A large number of performance indicators for multi-objective optimization algorithms have been introduced, each of which evaluates these algorithms based on a certain aspect. Therefore, assessing the quality of multi-objective results using multiple indicators is essential to guarantee that the evaluation considers all quality perspectives. This paper proposes a novel multi-metric comparison method to rank the performance of multi-/ many-objective optimization algorithms based on a set of performance indicators. We utilize the Pareto optimality concept (i.e., non-dominated sorting algorithm) to create the rank levels of algorithms by simultaneously considering multiple performance indicators as criteria/objectives. As a result, four different techniques are proposed to rank algorithms based on their contribution at each Pareto level. This method allows researchers to utilize a set of existing/newly developed performance metrics to adequately assess/rank multi-/many-objective algorithms. The proposed methods are scalable and can accommodate in its comprehensive scheme any newly introduced metric. The method was applied to rank 10 competing algorithms in the 2018 CEC competition solving 15 many-objective test problems. The Pareto-optimal ranking was conducted based on 10 well-known multi-objective performance indicators and the results were compared to the final ranks reported by the competition, which were based on the inverted generational distance (IGD) and hypervolume indicator (HV) measures. The techniques suggested in this paper have broad applications in science and engineering, particularly in areas where multiple metrics are used for comparisons. Examples include machine learning and data mining.
