In sun-drenched regions, balancing solar exposure for thermal comfort and minimization of cooling energy presents a key challenge. While passive shading mitigates summer heat gain, it also hinders winter solar benefits, a problem that is echoed by active systems such as photovoltaic panels. Existing adaptive solutions, adjusting to seasonal sun angles, offer flexibility, but introduce complexity, maintenance demands, and potentially higher costs. This study introduces a novel static roof shading system that addresses this knowledge gap. It effectively blocks summer sunrays and allows winter insolation without seasonal adjustments or associated mechanisms. This install and forget approach promises improved thermal comfort and reduced energy consumption in hot climates. Rigorous energy simulations in nine different Mexican locations, using a 69 m2 household model, reveal significant temperature improvements. The system delivers up to 30.38% (above 5 MWh) equivalent annual reduction in HVAC usage and 71.3% relative increase in thermal comfort during hot periods. This sustainable solution offers valuable information to address indoor thermal challenges in high-temperature regions, contributing to the advancement of sustainable building technologies.

Educational systems are now focusing on skills enhancement, such as creative thinking skills (CTS), as a means of long-lasting, significant learning. To this end, some universities and higher education institutions incentivize active learning (AL) strategies as CTS developers. Indeed, a positive link among creative results, time availability, and the educational environment has been reported; however, it is mainly based on qualitative and perceptual results. For this reason, we present this comparative, quantitative study in the context of a Mexican high school, weighing the effectiveness of the flipped learning and gamification teaching strategies against a conventional approach. The study revealed no differences in the learning environment; instead, the type of activity and the teamwork interaction affected CTS the most. However, those who participated in the learning Strategies (LS) evaluated themselves higher than their peers in the traditional classes. These results highlight the independence of CTS toward the referred LS and set a departing point for further research addressing the course activities' qualities seemingly related to CTS enhancement.

Flow cytometry has become an important tool in the fields of veterinary, medicine, and biological sciences in general. However, in the introductory and even in advanced university degree courses, students do not have many opportunities to be in contact with this type of technology. This situation motivated us to design a simple and inexpensive laboratory exercise for an Animal Physiology course that can be adapted to different biomedical university degrees according to their specific needs, and in which flow cytometry is used to analyse the effect of tonicity on the cellular volume and viability of components of the blood that are not usually used for this type of assay. In addition, we apply modern information technologies to improve laboratory practices through the use of a simulation platform, the preparation of a report in the format of a scientific article, and the adoption of a formative evaluation. This practice aims at increasing the students' ability to solve problems using flexible scientific methods, to develop skills such as handling experimental assays, and the ability to discuss their observations or obtained results. Finally, the activity brings them closer to their future professional career in clinical application or provides an opportunity to initiate in the research field.

The integration of alternative energy sources, storage systems, and modern loads into the distribution grid is complicating its operation and maintenance. Variability in individual generation and consumption elements dynamically affects voltage profiles, which in turn undermines efficiency and power quality. This study proposes to address this dynamical variability using an online reconfiguration approach that involves opening and closing switches to modify the grid's topology and adjust voltage levels in response to load/generation variations. Other grid optimization techniques, based on reconfiguration, typically focus on static, fully instrumented grids with predictable parameters and homogeneous changes, aiming to minimize power losses but overlooking the dynamics of variable grid elements. This study proposes a testing approach that is dependent on the estimated transient status of the grid only using a limited number of measurement units and considering the individual‐stochastic variations of loads and generators. The proposed approach was tested on the IEEE 33‐bus test feeder with up to five varying distributed generators. The results confirm that the algorithm consistently finds a reconfiguration alternative that could enhance system efficiency and voltage profiles, even in the face of dynamic load/generator behavior, demonstrating its effectiveness and online adaptability for grid operation and management tasks. Forestry companies SAFCOL and Sappi conducted a study in South Africa to examine genetic variation and select improved material in full-sib hybrid families of Pinus patula × Pinus tecunumanii. The results from the study on clonal and seedling hybrid populations of P. patula × P. tecunumanii low-elevation subpopulations (TECL) revealed a significantly larger impact of TECL compared to P. patula. The TECL parents exhibited higher general hybridising ability (GHA) variance for volume gain and modulus of elasticity (MOE). Consequently, future hybrid crosses should focus on increasing the number of TECL parents in the breeding programme to improve these traits. In the hybrid seedling population of P. patula × P. tecunumanii high-elevation subpopulation (TECH), P. patula exerted a substantial influence on volume gain and MOE. However, the TECH parents displayed zero estimates of GHA variance for volume and a low GHA variance for MOE, relative to GHA variance among P. patula parents for MOE. Thus, this study recommends testing more P. patula parents in new intercrosses of this variety to enhance volume and MOE gain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ceiba aesculifolia is an important species in Mexico that generates significant amounts of biomass waste during its exploitation, which can be utilized to produce energy. This study presents the characterization of this waste based on chemical (proximal and elemental) and thermal analyses (TGA-DTG) at different heating rates (β = 10–30 °C/min (283–303 K/min)) in the presence of nitrogen and in a temperature range of 25–900 °C. Kinetic parameters were calculated and analyzed as well. Activation energy (Ea) and the pre-exponential factor (A) were determined using the Friedman (132.03 kJ/mol, 8.11E + 10 s −1), FWO (121.65 kJ/mol, 4.30E + 09), KAS (118.14 kJ/mol, 2.41E + 09), and Kissinger (155.85 kJ/mol, 3.47E + 11) kinetic methods. Variation in the reaction order, n (0.3937–0.6141), was obtained by Avrami's theory. We also calculated the thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔG, ΔS) for each kinetic method applied. The results for Ea, A, n, ΔH, ΔG, and ΔS show that this biomass waste is apt for use in pyrolysis. Moreover, the moisture (<10%), ash (<2%), volatile material (>80%), and HHV (>19%) contents of C. aesculifolia allowed us to predict acceptable performance in generating energy and fuels. Finally, infrared spectroscopy analysis (FT-IR) allowed us to identify important functional groups, including one that belongs to the family of the aliphatic hydrocarbons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
