Abstract: The machine described in this document is an advanced Source of up to 20 MeV Gamma Rays based on Compton back-scattering, i.e. collision of an intense high power laser beam and a high brightness electron beam with maximum kinetic energy of about 720 MeV. Fully equipped with collimation and characterization systems, in order to generate, form and fully measure the physical characteristics of the produced Gamma Ray beam. The quality, i.e. phase space density, of the two colliding beams will be such that the emitted Gamma ray beam is characterized by energy tunability, spectral density, bandwidth, polarization, divergence and brilliance compatible with the requested performances of the ELI-NP user facility, to be built in Romania as the Nuclear Physics oriented Pillar of the European Extreme Light Infrastructure. This document illustrates the Technical Design finally produced by the EuroGammaS Collaboration, after a thorough investigation of the machine expected performances within the constraints imposed by the ELI-NP tender for the Gamma Beam System (ELI-NP-GBS), in terms of available budget, deadlines for machine completion and performance achievement, compatibility with lay-out and characteristics of the planned civil engineering.

Abstract: We have measured the ratio $\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-\gamma)/\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow \mu^+\mu^-\gamma)$, with the KLOE detector at DA$\Phi$NE for a total integrated luminosity of $\sim$ 240 pb$^{-1}$. From this ratio we obtain the cross section $\sigma(e^+e^-\rightarrow\pi^+\pi^-)$. From the cross section we determine the pion form factor $|F_\pi|^2$ and the two-pion contribution to the muon anomaly $a_\mu$ for $0.592

Abstract: Hadrontherapy is an emerging technique in cancer therapy that uses beams of charged particles. To meet the improved capability of hadrontherapy in matching the dose release with the cancer position, new dose monitoring techniques need to be developed and introduced into clinical use. The measurement of the fluxes of the secondary particles produced by the hadron beam is of fundamental importance in the design of any dose monitoring device and is eagerly needed to tune Monte Carlo simulations. We report the measurements done with charged secondary particles produced from the interaction of a 80 MeV/u fully stripped carbon ion beam at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, Catania, with a Poly-methyl methacrylate target. Charged secondary particles, produced at 90$\degree$ with respect to the beam axis, have been tracked with a drift chamber, while their energy and time of flight has been measured by means of a LYSO scintillator. Secondary protons have been identified exploiting the energy and time of flight information, and their emission region has been reconstructed backtracking from the drift chamber to the target. Moreover a position scan of the target indicates that the reconstructed emission region follows the movement of the expected Bragg peak position. Exploting the reconstruction of the emission region, an accuracy on the Bragg peak determination in the submillimeter range has been obtained. The measured differential production rate for protons produced with $E^{\rm Prod}_{\rm kin} >$ 83 MeV and emitted at 90$\degree$ with respect to the beam line is: $dN_{\rm P}/(dN_{\rm C}d\Omega)(E^{\rm Prod}_{\rm kin} > 83 {\rm ~MeV}, \theta=90\degree)= (2.69\pm 0.08_{\rm stat} \pm 0.12_{\rm sys})\times 10^{-4} sr^{-1}$., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Proton and carbon ion therapy is an emerging technique used for the treatment of solid cancers. The monitoring of the dose delivered during such treatments and the on-line knowledge of the Bragg peak position is still a matter of research. A possible technique exploits the collinear $511\ \kilo\electronvolt$ photons produced by positrons annihilation from $\beta^+$ emitters created by the beam. This paper reports rate measurements of the $511\ \kilo\electronvolt$ photons emitted after the interactions of a $80\ \mega\electronvolt / u$ fully stripped carbon ion beam at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) of INFN, with a Poly-methyl methacrylate target. The time evolution of the $\beta^+$ rate was parametrized and the dominance of $^{11}C$ emitters over the other species ($^{13}N$, $^{15}O$, $^{14}O$) was observed, measuring the fraction of carbon ions activating $\beta^+$ emitters $A_0=(10.3\pm0.7)\cdot10^{-3}$. The average depth in the PMMA of the positron annihilation from $\beta^+$ emitters was also measured, $D_{\beta^+}=5.3\pm1.1\ \milli\meter$, to be compared to the expected Bragg peak depth $D_{Bragg}=11.0\pm 0.5\ \milli\meter$ obtained from simulations.

This paper reports the measurements of the spectrum and rate of such photons produced from the interaction of a 80 MeV/u fully stripped carbon ion beam at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of INFN, Catania, with a Poly-methyl methacrylate target. The differential production rate for photons with energy E > 2 MeV and emitted at 90 degree is found to be $dN_{\gamma}/(dN_C d\Omega)=(2.92\pm 0.19)\times 10^{-2}$sr$^{-1}$.

Abstract: We report the measurement of the ratio $\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma)/\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0)$ analyzing a large sample of $\phi \to \eta \gamma$ decays recorded with the KLOE experiment at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+ e^-$ collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 558 pb$^{-1}$. The $\eta \to \pi^+\pi^-\gamma$ process is supposed to proceed both via a resonant contribution, mediated by the $\rho$ meson, and a non resonant direct term, connected to the box anomaly. The presence of the direct term affects the partial width value. Our result $R_{\eta}=\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \gamma)/\Gamma(\eta \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0)= 0.1838\pm 0.0005_{stat} \pm 0.0030_{syst}$ is in agreement with a recent CLEO measurement, which differs by more 3 $\sigma$ from the average of previous results.

Abstract: The processes $e^+e^-\to e^+e^-X$, with $X$ being either the $\eta$ meson or $\pi^0\pi^0$, are studied at DA$\Phi$NE, with $e^+e^-$ beams colliding at $\sqrt{s}\simeq1$ GeV, below the $\phi$ resonance peak. The data sample is from an integrated luminosity of 240 pb$^{-1}$, collected by the KLOE experiment without tagging of the outgoing $e^+e^-$. Abstract: This document reviews the physics program of the KLOE-2 detector at DA$\Phi$NE upgraded in energy and provides a simple solution to run the collider above the $\phi$-peak (up to 2, possibly 2.5 GeV). It is shown how a precise measurement of the multihadronic cross section in the energy region up to 2 (possibly 2.5) GeV would have a major impact on the tests of the Standard Model through a precise determination of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the effective fine-structure constant at the $M_Z$ scale. With a luminosity of about $10^{32}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, DA$\Phi$NE upgraded in energy can perform a scan in the region from 1 to 2.5 GeV in one year by collecting an integrated luminosity of 20 pb$^{-1}$ (corresponding to a few days of data taking) for single point, assuming an energy step of 25 MeV. A few years of data taking in this region would provide important tests of QCD and effective theories by $\gamma\gamma$ physics with open thresholds for pseudo-scalar (like the $\eta'$), scalar ($f_0,f'_0$, etc...) and axial-vector ($a_1$, etc...) mesons; vector-mesons spectroscopy and baryon form factors; tests of CVC and searches for exotics. Abstract: Investigation at a $\phi$--factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta$^\prime$ mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector. Abstract: In hadron therapy, the accelerated ions, interacting with the body of the patient, cause the fragmentation of both projectile and target nuclei. The fragments interact with the human tissues depositing energy both in the entrance channel and in the volume surrounding the tumor. The knowledge of the fragments features is crucial to determine the energy amount deposited in the human body, and - hence - the damage to the organs and to the tissues around the tumor target.

Abstract: In Charged Particle Therapy (PT) proton or 12C beams are used to treat deep-seated solid tumors exploiting the advantageous characteristics of charged particles energy deposition in matter. For such projectiles, the maximum of the dose is released at the end of the beam range, in the Bragg peak region, where the tumour is located. However, the nuclear interactions of the beam nuclei with the patient tissues can induce the fragmentation of projectiles and/or target nuclei and needs to be carefully taken into account when planning the treatment. In proton treatments, the target fragmentation produces low energy, short range fragments along all the beam path, that deposit a non-negligible dose especially in the first crossed tissues. On the other hand, in treatments performed using 12C, or other (4He or 16O) ions of interest, the main concern is related to the production of long range fragments that can release their dose in the healthy tissues beyond the Bragg peak. Understanding nuclear fragmentation processes is of interest also for radiation protection in human space flight applications, in view of deep space missions. In particular 4He and high-energy charged particles, mainly 12C, 16O, 28Si and 56Fe, provide the main source of absorbed dose in astronauts outside the atmosphere. The nuclear fragmentation properties of the materials used to build the spacecrafts need to be known with high accuracy in order to optimise the shielding against the space radiation. The study of the impact of these processes, which is of interest both for PT and space radioprotection applications, suffers at present from the limited experimental precision achieved on the relevant nuclear cross sections that compromise the reliability of the available computational models. The FOOT (FragmentatiOn Of Target) collaboration, composed of researchers from France, Germany, Italy and Japan, designed an experiment to study these nuclear processes and measure the corresponding fragmentation cross sections. In this work we discuss the physics motivations of FOOT, describing in detail the present detector design and the expected performances, coming from the optimization studies based on accurate FLUKA MC simulations and preliminary beam test results. The measurements planned will be also presented.

Abstract: International audience; The FOOT experiment is a fixed target experiment aiming for high precision (better than 5%) measurement of fragmentation cross section for hadrontherapy and space radioprotection purposes. Both target and projectile fragmentation are studied by using mainly proton, Carbon and Oxygen ion beams in both direct and inverse kinematic regime, alternatively. A good track reconstruction and momentum measurement is of fundamental importance for precise fragment identification and cross section measurement.

Abstract: International audience; The main goal of the FOOT (FragmentatiOn Of Target) experiment is the measurement of the differential cross sections as a function of energy and direction of the produced fragments in the nuclear interaction between a ion beam (proton, helium, carbon, ...) and different targets (proton, carbon, oxygen, ...). Depending on the beam energy, the purpose of the measurements is twofold: in the [150-400] MeV/u range, the data will be used to evaluate the side effects of the nuclear fragmentation in the hadrontherapy treatment, while in the [700-1000] MeV/u range it will be used to optimize the shielding of spaceships for long term space missions. The experiment has been funded by the INFN since September 2017 and it is currently in the construction phase. An overview of the detector, of the results obtained in several beam tests and of the expected performances will be presented.

Abstract: International audience; A detailed knowledge of the light ions interaction processes with matter is of great interest in basic and applied physics. As an example, particle therapy and space radioprotection require highly accurate fragmentation cross-section measurements to develop shielding materials and estimate acute and late health risks for manned missions in space and for treatment planning in particle therapy. The Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy experiment at the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion research (GSI) was designed and built by an international collaboration from France, Germany, Italy, and Spain for studying the collisions of a C12 ion beam with thin targets. The collaboration's main purpose is to provide the double-differential cross-section measurement of carbon-ion fragmentation at energies that are relevant for both tumor therapy and space radiation protection applications. Fragmentation cross sections of light ions impinging on a wide range of thin targets are also essential to validate the nuclear models implemented in MC simulations that, in such an energy range, fail to reproduce the data with the required accuracy. This paper presents the single differential carbon-ion fragmentation cross sections on a thin gold target, measured as a function of the fragment angle and kinetic energy in the forward angular region (θ≲6∘), aiming to provide useful data for the benchmarking of the simulation softwares used in light ions fragmentation applications. The C12 ions used in the measurement were accelerated at the energy of 400 MeV/nucleon by the SIS (heavy ion synchrotron) GSI facility.

Abstract: The KLOE experiment at the ϕ – factory DAΦNE in Frascati near Rome is the first to have employed Initial State Radiation (ISR) to precisely determine the e + e − → π + π − ( γ ) cross section below 1 GeV. Such a measurement is particularly important to test the Standard Model (SM) calculation for the ( g − 2 ) of the muon, where a long standing 3 σ discrepancy is observed. In 2005 and 2008 KLOE published two measurements of the π + π − cross section with the photon emitted at small angles, and an independent measurement of the π + π − cross section with the photon emitted at large angles using data at a collision energy of 1 GeV (i.e., 20 MeV below the ϕ -peak) was published in 2010. While the measurements were normalized to the DAΦNE luminosity using large angle Bhabha scattering, a new analysis has been performed which derives the pion form factor directly from measuring the bin-by-bin π + π − γ / μ + μ − γ ratio. We present the preliminary results of this new measurement, as well as the previously published ones, and the impact on the evaluation of the hadronic contribution to the muon anomaly.

Abstract: We discuss the final results of the MACRO experiment on atmospheric neutrino oscillations. The data concern event topologies with average neutrino energies of ~3 and ~50 GeV. Multiple Coulomb Scattering of the high energy muons was used to estimate the neutrino energy event by event. The angular distributions, the L/E_nu distribution, the particle ratios and the absolute fluxes all favor nu_mu --> nu_tau oscillations with maximal mixing and Delta m^2 ~0.0023 eV^2. Emphasis is given to measured ratios which are not affected by Monte Carlo (MC) absolute normalization; a discussion is made on MC uncertainties. A preliminary search for possible Lorentz invariance violation contributions to atmospheric neutrino oscillations is presented and discussed., 4 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: Hadrontherapy treatments use charged particles (e.g. protons and carbon ions) to treat tumors. During a therapeutic treatment with carbon ions, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation processes giving rise to significant yields of secondary charged particles. An accurate prediction of these production rates is necessary to estimate precisely the dose deposited into the tumours and the surrounding healthy tissues. Nowadays, a limited set of double differential carbon fragmentation cross-section is available. Experimental data are necessary to benchmark Monte Carlo simulations for their use in hadrontherapy. The purpose of the FIRST experiment is to study nuclear fragmentation processes of ions with kinetic energy in the range from 100 to 1000 MeV/u. Tracks are reconstructed using information from a pixel silicon detector based on the CMOS technology. The performances achieved using this device for hadrontherapy purpose are discussed. For each reconstruction step (clustering, tracking and vertexing), different methods are implemented. The algorithm performances and the accuracy on reconstructed observables are evaluated on the basis of simulated and experimental data.

Abstract: The MACRO experiment detected different categories of atmospheric muon neutrinos. We describe in this paper the energy estimate of upward throughgoing muons by using the multiple coulomb scattering. Combining the results of such analysis with the upgoing muon angular distribution, both not using the absolute ν flux normalization informations, an evidence above 4σ for atmospheric neutrino oscillation is found.

Abstract: In the MACRO experiment the flux of atmospheric muon neutrinos has been studied through the detection of upward-going muons generated in the rock below the detector and also through neutrino interactions inside the apparatus. Several topologies of neutrino events have been detected, which correspond to different neutrino parent energies. The measured flux in the different data sets shows a deficit with respect to the Monte Carlo predictions. Moreover, the upward-throughgoing muon sample (median neutrino energy ∼ 50 GeV ) also shows a distortion in the angular distribution shape. Interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillation, these results favor a ν μ into ν τ oscillation scenario, while the ν μ into ν sterile channel is disfavared at 99% C.L.

Abstract: A measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced muons using the MACRO detector is presented. Different event topologies, corresponding to different neutrino parent energies can be detected. The upward throughgoing muon sample is the larger event sample. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26% fewer than expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one. Assuming neutrino oscillations, both measurements suggest maximum mixing and Dm2 of a few times 10-3 eV2. The other samples are due to the internally produced events and to upward-going stopping muons. Abstract: Nuclear fragmentation processes are relevant in different fields of basic research and applied physics and are of particular interest for tumor therapy and for space radiation protection applications. The FIRST (Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy) experiment at SIS accelerator of GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, has been designed for the measurement of different ions fragmentation cross sections at different energies between 100 and 1000 MeV/nucleon. The experiment is performed by an international collaboration made of institutions from Germany, France, Italy and Spain. The experimental apparatus is partly based on an already existing setup made of the ALADIN magnet, the MUSIC IV TPC, the LAND2 neutron detector and the TOFWALL scintillator TOF system, integrated with newly designed detectors in the interaction Region (IR) around the carbon removable target: a scintillator Start Counter, a Beam Monitor drift chamber, a silicon Vertex Detector and a Proton Tagger for detection of light fragments emitted at large angles (KENTROS). The scientific program of the FIRST experiment started on summer 2011 with the study of the 400 MeV/nucleon 12C beam fragmentation on thin (8mm) carbon target.

Abstract: FIRST (Fragmentation of Ions Relevant for Space and Therapy) is an experiment aimed at the measurement of double-differential cross sections, with respect to kinetic energy and scattering polar angle, of nuclear fragmentation processes in the energy range between 100 and 1000 MeV/u. The experiment was performed with the SIS accelerator at GSI (Darmstadt, Germany). During August 2011 a first set of data was collected using a 400 MeV/u 12C ion beam on carbon and gold targets. We present a description of the experimental apparatus and some preliminary results from the data acquisition and from the data analysis.

Abstract: The knowledge about fragmentation processes in ion-ion interactions is fundamental in hadrontherapy and radiation protection in space missions. Hadrontherapy, based on 12C, features many advantages with respect to conventional radiation therapy with photons due to the possibility to shape the dose delivery region in tissues but side effects of the projectile fragmentation in healthy tissues are not negligible. NASA recently pointed out that measurements for some light ions and kinetic energies are missing in nuclear fragmentation databases. FIRST experiment aims to measure the fragmentation doubledifferential cross section of 12C in the energy range 100-1000 MeV/u on several elements, constituents of organic tissues and electronic devices, in order to fill some of the mentioned lack of information on light ions. A first set of data has been taken in 2011 at GSI (Darmstadt), using 12C beam at 400 MeV/u on C and Au targets. About 3·107 events with C target and 5 × 106 with Au target were recorded. Together with these data other sets of runs have been collected to calibrate the forward part of the whole experimental setup, the ToF-Wall. The calibration procedure and the detector performances, which fit the experiment requirements for what concerns efficiency, resolution and stability, will be illustrated. Moreover, some preliminary results concerning the 12C-12C elastic scattering, in agreement with the Rutherford model, will be presented.
