Italy is one of the European countries most affected by biological invasions. In this study, we focused on the impact of Acacia saligna, an Australian invasive plant species, on the coastal ecosystem’s ecology and biodiversity along the sandy coasts of Molise (southern Italy). We analyzed data from 61 vegetation plots recorded in coastal pine forest and Mediterranean scrub habitats of Molise throughout the preparatory actions of the “LIFE Maestrale” project (NAT/IT/000262). In order to study the ecological impact of Acacia saligna comparing invaded and non-invaded areas, we first assigned the Ellenberg’s indicator values to each plant species, which were then used to relate the presence of Acacia saligna with ecological characteristics of sites through a generalized linear model (GLM). Our results showed a significant positive relationship between the presence of Acacia saligna and high levels of soil nutrients and, on the contrary, a negative relationship with the presence of mesophilic species, which are typical of the community interest habitats of pine forest (2270*). The use of ecological indicators is effective to pinpoint the ecological effects of biological invasions, as well as to evaluate habitat conservation state and to identify vulnerable native species.

Introduction: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) frequently occur in Parkinson's disease (PD), and an early identification is essential to prevent severe psychosocial consequences. The Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease-Rating Scale (QUIP-RS) has been developed to evaluate the severity of ICDs along with a range of impulsive-compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in PD; however, its Italian version has not yet been validated., Methods: One hundred consecutive outpatients with PD were administered an Italian version of the QUIP-RS and a brief neuropsychological assessment to evaluate global cognitive status and scales to measure depression, apathy and impulsive disorders. We evaluated the internal consistency, convergent and divergent validity, and factorial structure of QUIP-RS. We also explored the possible association between QUIP-RS scores and clinical factors and dopaminergic medication., Results: Subsyndromal ICDs manifestations were observed in 54% of the patients, and one in four (22%) reported two or more ICDs or related behaviors. The QUIP-RS demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.806) and construct validity, and its factorial structure reflected different ICDs and ICBs domains. No association emerged between QUIP-RS scores and the clinical aspects of PD and dopaminergic medication., Conclusion: We provided, for the first time, an Italian translation of the QUIP-RS and demonstrated its feasibility in clinical and research settings. BACKGROUNDPredicting immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) in patients infused with CAR T cells is still a conundrum. This complication, thought to be consequent to CAR T cell activation, arises a few days after infusion, when circulating CAR T cells are scarce and specific CAR T cell-derived biomarkers are lacking.METHODSCAR+ extracellular vesicle (CAR+EV) release was assessed in human CD19.CAR T cells cocultured with CD19+ target cells. A prospective cohort of 100 patients with B cell lymphoma infused with approved CD19.CAR T cell products was assessed for plasma CAR+EVs as biomarkers of in vivo CD19.CAR T cell activation. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived (iPSC-derived) neural cells were used as a model for CAR+EV-induced neurotoxicity.RESULTSIn vitro release of CAR+EVs occurs within 1 hour after target engagement. Plasma CAR+EVs are detectable 1 hour after infusion. A concentration greater than 132.8 CAR+EVs/μL at hour +1 or greater than 224.5 CAR+EVs/μL at day +1 predicted ICANS in advance of 4 days, with a sensitivity and a specificity outperforming other ICANS predictors. Background and Purpose: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) frequently occurs in Parkinson Disease (PD), probably caused by upper airway dysfunctions or shared pathogenetic mechanisms. OSA may precede PD diagnosis or worsen throughout its course, but its relationship with clinical features and dopaminergic medication remains unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to provide a reliable estimate of OSA prevalence in the PD population (PD-OSA) and to clarify its clinical associated factors to help clinicians in understanding the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms., Methods: A systematic literature search was performed up to April 2023 using the PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases. Articles were included if they provided data on PD patients with and without OSA. Pooled prevalence for PD-OSA was calculated using the proportions of PD participants diagnosed with OSA. Demographic and clinical features associated with PD-OSA were explored by comparing PD patients with and without OSA., Results: Seventeen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled OSA prevalence was 45% of a total sample of 1448 PD patients and was associated with older age, male sex, higher body mass index (BMI), more severe motor disturbances and periodic limb movements, reduced risk of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, intake of dopamine agonists, and worse excessive daytime sleepiness. No relationship emerged with cognitive functioning and neuropsychiatric manifestations., Conclusions: OSA affects nearly half of PD patients as a secondary outcome of predisposing factors such as older age and higher BMI in addition to PD-related motor impairment. Future studies should focus on determining the impact of both clinical features and dopaminergic medication on the development of PD-OSA., (© 2023 The Authors. Few longitudinal studies have so far investigated the impact of sustained COVID-19 among people with pre-existing psychiatric disorders. We conducted a prospective study involving people with serious mental illness (n = 114) and healthy controls (n = 41) to assess changes in the Perceived Stress Scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire, and Specific Psychotic Experiences Questionnaire scores 18 months after the COVID-19 pandemic outset. Subjects underwent interviews with a mental health professional in April 2020 and at the end of the local third wave (October 2021). A significant increase in perceived stress was found in healthy controls, especially females. Psychiatric patients showed a significant worsening of anxiety symptoms compared to baseline records (t = -2.3, p = 0.036). Patients who rejected vaccination had significantly higher paranoia scores compared to those willing to get vaccinated (U = 649.5, z = -2.02, p = 0.04). In 51 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma the fasting blood concentrations of hCG, beta hCG, alpha subunits, ADH, calcitonin, enteroglucagon, gastrin, GH, melatonin, somatostatin, estradiol, CEA and pepsinogen I in the peripheral vein were estimated by radioimmunoassay at the time of diagnosis and, in those who underwent surgery, 7 days after the operation, to determine the incidence of the modifications of the above mentioned substances' blood levels and the existence of possible markers. In presence of increases of the examined parameters greater than 50%, considering M +/- 2 SD of 10 control subjects as normal range, the tumours were examined immunohistochemically. In patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, in comparison with normal subjects, we found significant higher blood levels of hCG alpha subunits, gastrin and CEA and lower of melatonin, pepsinogen I and GH. The immunohistological results demonstrated CEA in both examined cases, alpha subunits in 2 of 6 (respectively in dysplasic areas and in surrounding non neoplastic mucosa) and enteroglucagon in 1 of 3 (dysplasic areas). Our results indicate that none of the parameters we examined, because of their non-specificity or of the low incidence of their modifications, can be considered a marker of gastric adenocarcinoma.

We have studied 15 women with idiopathic galactorrhoea and normal serum PRL basal values, regularly menstruating, with normal x-ray of the sella turcica and mammography. The patients were not suffering from other endocrine diseases nor taking medications known to cause galactorrhoea. These subjects and 5 normal women were submitted to an evaluation of the serum PRL circadian rhythm, to TRH test for PRL and TSH, metoclopramide test for PRL, and basal determination of TT3 and TT4. The results did not show any significant difference between the two groups and did not reveal any abnormality of PRL secretion in the patients. These data, resulting from a homogeneous series of patients, support the hypothesis of an increased sensitivity of breast receptors to PRL, or of the secretion of heterogeneous forms of PRL, biologically active on mammary tissue, but not detected by current RIA methods for PRL.

The effects of 100 micrograms, i.m. of the analog ACTH 1-17 administered at 0800 and 1800 on the secretion of cortisol, aldosterone and testosterone have been studied in normal subjects: 8 male and 8 female. The group as a whole and the males had significantly greater absolute and percent increments in plasma cortisol after administration at 1800. In the females, there was only a greater percent increment in cortisol after the evening administration. The heptadecapeptide always significantly stimulated serum aldosterone, with no difference between the two times of administration. In the females, ACTH 1-17 significantly stimulated testosterone, with a more protracted secretion after the evening administration. In the males, there was always a significant testosterone decrease after the administration of the drug, with no difference between morning and evening. In conclusion, 100 micrograms i.m. of the analog ACTH 1-17 stimulates cortisol secretion more when given during the circadian nadir of plasma cortisol, but only in men. ACTH 1-17 increases testosterone in women and decreases it in men, whereas it seems to increase aldosterone secretion in both sexes.

The effect of naloxone on PRL and TSH response to TRH was studied in 8 normal men. PRL response to TRH was unaffected by the administration of naloxone. TSH response to TRH was significantly decreased by naloxone, considering the maximum absolute increment (p less than 0.01) and the areas under curves (p less than 0.05). In conclusion, the PRL response to TRH may be unaffected by endogenous opioids or naloxone and we were unable to reveal a possible opioid effect in our experimental conditions. TSH response to TRH seems to be affected by endogenous opioids, possibly due to an indirect or direct action on TRH and/or on the pituitary.
