1. Ground water retention correlation to atmospheric muon rates

Abstract

Muography is an investigation technique based on the detection of the atmospheric muon flux' modification through matter. It has found lately multiple applications in geosciences, archaelogy, and non invasive industrial controls. Mostly known for its imaging capabilities, muography may be exploited as well for monitoring purposes since the atmospheric muon flux is available permanently. In this paper we present an interesting measurement performed in the context of an archaelogical project called Arch\'emuons, on the archaeological site of "Palais du Miroir" in Vienne, South of Lyon, France. We installed a muon detector in an underground gallery within the foundations of the building for the second half of 2023. The primary goal is to measure details of those foundations which are largely not excavated yet. Meanwhile we observed over more than 6 months long-term and short-term variations of the muon rates since the start of the experiment, which seem to exhibit a correlation with the rain accumulating on the free field just above the gallery. We propose as an explanation for this behavior the retention of water by the soil above the detector site.

Abstract

Muography is an innovative imaging technique using naturally produced elementary particles -- atmospheric muons -- like the X-rays of medical imaging. The modification of the particles flux -- by scattering or absorption --, reflects the contrasts in density within the medium and therefore offers the possibility for an image of the crossed volumes. The imaging process is based on the tracking of the particles which accounts for the absorption or the scattering of the muons trajectories. Neither the energy nor the identity of the particles (the so-called PID) is exploited since this information traditionally relies on the use of calorimeters and/or high intensity magnetic fields. Both these techniques hinder detector portability which in the case of muography is important and this renders them impractical for its purpose. In this paper we characterize the performance of a simple and small water Cherenkov detector capable on the one hand of providing some insights on energy and PID and on the other hand of improving the background rejection for a muon telescope. We tested a prototype of such water Cherenkov detector in combination with two small muon hodoscopes. Both systems are using the same opto-electronics chain -- optical fibers and pixellized photosensors -- and the same data acquisition (DAQ) readout system which ensures an easy integration and implementation within presently running systems. This article presents the test setup, the detector response to cosmic muons and its performance evaluation against a basic simulation of its geometry and detection principle.

3. First 3D reconstruction of a blast furnace using muography

Abstract

The blast furnace (BF) is the fundamental tool used in the iron manufacture. Due to the difficulty of accessing direct measurements of the inner phenomena, we determined the density distribution of its internal volume in order to improve its productivity using muography. This is an imaging technique based on the differential absorption of a flux of incident particles, muons, by the target under study, similar to clinical X-ray imaging. Muons are elementary particles that have the property of passing through dense materials, up to hundreds of meters away. Their relative absorption and deviation allows the generation of density distribution images of an object by tracking the number of muons received by a detector, before and after passing through a structure. The incident direction of the detected muons is reconstructed by means of a detector composed of 3 scintillator panels that we moved on 3 positions around the BF. With this technique, we obtained the first 3D image of the internal structure of a BF using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) inverse problem solving algorithm on muon flux data. We were also able to perform a density monitoring of the BF and some of its operating parameters. We distinguished the position and shape of the cohesive zone, a key element in the productivity of a furnace, validating this innovative measurement concept in the application to a BF and opening the field to a series of future experiments to gain both spatial and temporal resolution.

Abstract

Muon rate models play a key role in converting measured data into information on the density distributions of a target. Any given muography measurement, either in transmission or in scattering mode, requires a proper modelization of the muon flux according to the localization and to the atmospheric conditions. Two approaches are commonly used: either through semi-empirical models calibrated on existing data or via Monte-Carlo simulations. The former requires extrapolations to the field experiment conditions while the latter offers the advantage of tackling down in an unique way all relevant parameters such as barometric conditions, geomagnetic field, atmosphere density etc. Although significant progress were made in the last decades, precision muography experiments require more and more accuracy on the models, especially for the muons close to the horizon where large disparities still remain. In this paper we present detailed results obtained with the CORSIKA simulation framework to emphasize and quantify the impact of the environmental conditions on the sensitivity of muography measurements.

Abstract

Muography techniques applied to geological structures greatly improved in the past ten years. Recent applications demonstrate the interest of the method not only to perform structural imaging but also to monitor the dynamics of inner movements like magma ascent inside volcanoes or density variations in hydrothermal systems. Muography time-resolution has been studied thanks to dedicated experiments, e.g. in a water tower tank. This paper presents the activities of the DIAPHANE collaboration between particle- and geo-physicists and the most recent results obtained in the field of volcanology, with a focus on the main target, the Soufri\`ere of Guadeloupe active volcano. Special emphasis is given on the monitoring of the dome's inner volumes opacity variations, that could be inferred to the hydrothermal system dynamics (vaporization of inner liquid water in coincidence with the appearance of new fumaroles at the summit). Abstract

Muon tomography is a generic imaging method using the differential absorption of cosmic muons by matter. The measured contrast in the muons flux reflects the matter density contrast as it does in conventional medical imaging. Abstract

Usage of secondary cosmic muons to image the geological structures density distribution significantly developed during the past ten years. Recent applications demonstrate the method interest to monitor magma ascent and volcanic gas movements inside volcanoes. Muon radiography could be used to monitor density variations in aquifers and the critical zone in the near surface. However, the time resolution achievable by muon radiography monitoring remains poorly studied. It is biased by fluctuation sources exterior to the target, and statistically affected by the limited number of particles detected during the experiment. The present study documents these two issues within a simple and well constrained experimental context: a water tower. We use the data to discuss the influence of atmospheric variability that perturbs the signal, and propose correction formulas to extract the muon flux variations related to the water level changes. Statistical developments establish the feasibility domain of muon radiography monitoring as a function of target thickness (i.e. opacity). Objects with a thickness comprised between $\simeq$ 50 $\pm$ 30m water equivalent correspond to the best time resolution. Thinner objects have a degraded time resolution that strongly depends on the zenith angle, whereas thicker objects (like volcanoes) time resolution does not., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

The International Large Detector, ILD, is a detector concept which has been developed for the electron-positron collider ILC. The detector has been optimized for precision physics in a range of energies between 90 GeV and 1 TeV. ILD features a high precision, large volume combined silicon and gaseous tracking system, together with a high granularity calorimeter, all inside a 3.5 T solenoidal magnetic field. The paradigm of particle flow has been the guiding principle of the design of ILD. In this document the required performance of the detector, the proposed implementation and the readiness of the different technologies needed for the implementation are discussed. This is done in the framework of the ILC collider proposal, now under consideration in Japan, and includes site specific aspects needed to build and operate the detector at the proposed ILC site in Japan.

Abstract

International audience; We present novel developments in muography methods to combine continuous measurementsperformed by 2 independant muon detectors around the dome of an active volcano, the Soufrièreof Guadeloupe. The aim is to reach the best possible performances in the continuous monitoringof its hydrothermal system spatio-temporal dynamics.Volcanic hydrothermal systems give rise to unpredictable hazards such as hydrothermal explo-sions, partial edifice collapse, mudflows and sudden emission of toxic gases. Characterizing the dy-namics of these systems and constraining the models by real-time data is thus critical for develop-ing efficient risk assessment.Within the DIAPHANE project, funded by the french National Research Agency (ANR), 6 muontelescopes have been deployed around the dome since 2015 and acquire muon data continuouslywith a large duty cycle. In this work we show the results obtained with a set of more than 1.5years of continuous measurements acquired with 2 muon detectors scanning different zones of thedome with large overlapping volumes. Characterizing the time changes in the outgoing muon fluxin different regions allows us to study the density changes caused by steam formation, condensa-tion, water infiltration and storage.The details of the analysis is presented : region definition through common geological structures,principal component analysis of the temporal series, determination of the changes in opacity im-plied by the muon-flux changes observed. This strategy allows us to spatially constrain the three-dimensional location of the coherent density changes and to improve the quantification of the as-sociated mass changes. The obtained results on the active zone of the Soufrière of Guadeloupe’sSouth crater are presented in details.

Abstract

International audience; Volcanoes in the Caribbean often host extremely developed hydrothermal systems. These result from the interaction of large amount of water, infiltered in the system thanks to strong precipitation regimes, with the magmatic gases and liquids rising from the magmatic chamber. Volcanic hydrothermal systems give rise to unpredictable hazards such as hydrothermal explosions, partial edifice collapse, mudflows and sudden emission of toxic gases. Characterizing the dynamics of these systems is thus critical for developing efficient risk assessment.At La Soufriere de Guadeloupe volcano, a pioneer network of muon telescopes has been installed to assess the potential of this technology to monitor the volcano's dynamic hydrothermal system. Muon imaging has emerged as a powerful method to complement standard geophysical methods in volcanology. Muon measurements yield a radiography of the average density along the muon path, allowing to image large volumes of a geological body from a single observation point. When multiple muon detectors surrounding the volcano are available, it is possible to invert these data to retrieve the 3-D density distribution in the volcano. Long-term measurements of the muon flux allow to infer density changes in the system. In the context of volcanic hydrothermal systems, this approach helps to characterize zones of steam formation, condensation, water infiltration and storage.Here we present the use of continuous muon measurements at La Soufrière de Guadeloupe volcano as a novel methodology to characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of its hydrothermal system. In this work a set of more than 1.5 years of continuous measurements simultaneously acquired with two muon detectors is analyzed. The two telescopes scan two different zones of the dome with large overlapping volumes. The changes observed are consistent among the two detectors, thus pointing to a common source of density changes inside the volcano. The method is thus a reliable tool to monitor shallow activity in the volcano and may be used in other "wet volcanoes" in combination with standard monitoring methods to quantification internal processes of mass and heat transfer in the system

Abstract

International audience; Imaging geological objects by quantifying the screening effect they have on the natural flux of cosmic muons is a powerful method that complements standard geophysical tools in the understanding of the Earth's subsurface. Radiographies of the average density of geological bodies along the muon paths can be retrieved from muon measurements, allowing to image large volumes of rock from a single observation point. Furthermore, continuous muon measurements allow us to monitor density variations in a geological object, by tracking the time changes in the outgoing flux of muons. The Mont Terri underground rock laboratory is located in the Jura Mountains range, at a depth of around 300 meters below the Earth's surface in north-western Switzerland. Its structural setting is dominated by an anticline of Triassic-Jurassic formations, whose spatial distribution is finely characterized given the numerous boreholes and outcrops studied inside and outside the tunnel. In this work we analyze 5 muon imaging experiences performed from inside the rock laboratory from 2013 to 2017. From this dataset we obtain corresponding muon radiographies of the average density between the tunnel and the surface of the Mont Terri site at extensive directions. Moreover, at one site the muon detector continuously recorded data for a whole year. We use these data to study the density variations due to changes on the rock's fluid saturation over time in different regions of the mountain. Finally, we perform a joint interpretation with complementary geological, meteorological and geophysical data from the site.

Abstract

International audience; Since a decade the DIAPHANE collaboration has developed many detection methods in the context of volcanology to end up with the most complete existing muon detection complex on the dome of La Soufrière of Guadeloupe. Up-to-now 6 detectors are operating around this dome allowing both structural 3D imaging and functional continuous monitoring of the hydrothermal system. Although the volcanic dome has ideal proportions for muography studies in terms of opacity and timescales, it has recently emerged that applications in different fields may be worth a dedicated measurement campaign.Non invasive and non destructive measurements are a natural applications of muography in the industrial context as long as the relative opacity is large enough to be detected in a reasonable timescale. We present here the details of an upgraded mobile muon detector aimed at performing measurements on different points around the Apollonia tumulus near Thessaloniki in the North of Greece (ARCHé project). The detector has been installed for a 3 months data taking campaign in July 2018. The aim is to perform a 3D map of the tumulus and to correlate it with the results obtained previously in electrical tomography.We also show the results of a full Monte-Carlo study of the experiment, including the evaluation of the low-energy muons scattering on the target, just upstream the detector, mimicing a through-going particles. This irreducible background noise may bias the muography analysis and requires a prior characterization to conveniently correct the obtained results.

Abstract

International audience; Tunnel-boring projects require a considerable amount of planning, well ahead of drilling operations. Despite these precautionary measures, unexpected ground geological features (local density variations, cavities, unstable superficial ground, instabilities induced by the driller) impose real-time adaptations of the drilling operations.The direct relation of muon flux absorption with the density of a given medium, makes muography a promising solution to provide a real-time density analysis of geological objects in front of the tunnel-boring machine (TBM). To test its applicability during the drilling of the "Grand Paris Express" subway network, a muon telescope was used in two different experiments. First it was placed besides the TBM, directed towards the drilled cylinder from a lateral perspective. It was then moved directly inside the TBM for the rest of the drilling operation. These experiments provide an unique dataset to optimize the methodology.The data interpretation remains technically challenging due to the poissonian nature of muon events. The muon flux is estimated through the averaging of point events during a limited time window, leading to possible misinterpretations of pure statistically natural fluctuations of the muons events. Numerical routines have been developed to compute the theoretical muon flux variations for different drilling trajectories, depths, and speeds, in a medium with heteregenous density.For the first experiment, good matches are obtained with experimental values. A blind analysis of the reconstructed TBM's time dependant position puts strong constraints on the time and spatial resolution of the method. For the second data set, because the telescope is moving forward and at an irregular pace, the muon flux crossing a particular geological object measured by the telescope has different directions with respect to time, allowing 3D density estimates. First attempts to reconstruct 3D density distribution of the ground, using inhomogeneous poisson likelihood, are presented.

International audience; Volcanic hydrothermal systems give rise to unpredictable hazards such as hydrothermal explosions, partial edifice collapse, mudflows and sudden emission of toxic gases. Characterizing the dynamics of these systems is thus critical for developing efficient risk assessment.Here we present the use of continuous muon measurements at La Soufrière de Guadeloupe volcano as a novel methodology to characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of its hydrothermal system. Six muon telescopes acquire data continuously around the lava dome since 2015. In this work a set of more than 1.5 years of continuous measurements acquired with two muon detectors is analyzed. The two telescopes scan two different zones of the dome with large overlapping volumes. Characterizing the time changes in the outgoing muon flux in different regions allows us to study the density changes caused by steam formation, condensation, water infiltration and storage. First, we define these regions according to the different geological structures in the volcano presenting characteristic behaviors: active/non-active fumarolic zones, and shallow/deeper sections of the system. We then perform a principal component analysis of the temporal series to identify which lines-of-sight of the two telescopes present coherent temporal variations. Finally, we make use of calibrated static muon radiographies to determine the changes in opacity implied by the muon-flux changes observed. This strategy allows us to spatially constrain the three-dimensional location of the coherent density changes and to improve the quantification of the associated mass changes.

Abstract

International audience; Muon imaging has recently emerged as a powerful method to complement standard geophysical tools in the study of the Earth’s subsurface. Muon measurements yield a radiography of the average density along the muon path, allowing to image large volumes of a geological body from a single observation point. Long-term measurements allow to infer density changes by tracking the associated variations in the muon flux. In the context of volcanic hydrothermal systems, this approach helps to characterize zones of steam formation, condensation, water infiltration and storage. We present results of imaging the La Soufrière de Guadeloupe dome and shallow active hydrothermal system with a network of muon telescopes viewing the dome from different positions around its base. First, we jointly invert the muon radiographies of the different telescopes with gravity data to obtain a three-dimensional density model of the lava dome. The model reveals an extended low density region where the hydrothermal system is most active. We then analyze the dynamics of the hydrothermal system from long-term measurements (more than 2 years of almost non-interrupted acquisition) with 5 simultaneous muon telescopes. We identify a periodicity of ~1-2 months in the density increase/decrease in the most active zones below fumaroles and acid boiling ponds. Our simultaneous-muon telescope strategy provides constraints on the three-dimensional location of the density changes and an improved quantification of the associated mass flux changes. We compare the temporal trends acquired by the different muon telescopes to time-series of rainfall on the summit recharge area as well as to ground temperature profiles in the vicinity of thermal anomalies and high-discharge summit fumaroles.

To overcome this limitation, wepresent the first results of imaging the La Soufrière de Guadeloupe dome and shallowhydrothermal system with several simultaneous muon telescopes viewing the domefrom different positions around its base. Our strategy provides better constraints on thespatial location of the density changes and an improved estimate of the amount of massinvolved in these changes. Therefore, we can better characterize water phase changesand estimate pore pressures. We compare the temporal density variations extractedfrom different muon telescopes to time-series of rainfall on the summit recharge areaand temperature profiles in the vicinity of ground thermal anomalies and summitfumaroles.

National audience; Les muons d’origine cosmique sont des particules éphémères de hauteénergie pouvant traverser plusieurs kilomètres de roche. Le principede la radiographie par muons consiste à déterminer la densité d’unmassif rocheux en mesurant l’atténuation qu’il produit sur le flux demuons. Les principes physiques et les difficultés de cette nouvelle méthoded’imagerie seront décrites ainsi que les télescopes de terrain quenous avons conçus et réalisés. Les performances de la méthodes serontillustrés à l’aide des résultats d’expériences réalisées sur des volcans(Soufrière de Guadeloupe, Etna, Mayon) et en laboratoire souterrain(Mont Terri).

Abstract

International audience; Muon tomography measures the flux of cosmic muons crossing geological bodies to determine their density. Three acquisitions with different sights of view were made at la soufrière de Guadeloupe. All of them show important density fluctuations and reveal the volcano phreatic system. The telescopes used to perform these measurements are exposed to noise fluxes with high intensities relative to the tiny flux of interest.We give experimental evidences ofa so far never described source of noise caused by a flux of upward-going particles. Data acquired on La soufrière of Guadeloupe and Mount Etna reveal that upward-going particles are detected only when the rear side of the telescope is exposed to a wide volume of atmosphere located below the altitude of the telescope and with a rock obstruction less than several tens of meters. Biases produced on density muon radiographies by upward-going fluxes are quantified and correction procedures are applied to radiographies of la soufrière.

Abstract

The ILD detector is proposed for an electron-positron collider with collision centre-of-mass energies from 90~\GeV~to about 1~\TeV. It has been developed over the last 10 years by an international team of scientists with the goal to design and eventually propose a fully integrated detector, primarily for the International Linear Collider, ILC. In this report the fundamental ideas and concepts behind the ILD detector are discussed and the technologies needed for the realisation of the detector are reviewed. The document starts with a short review of the science goals of the ILC, and how the goals can be achieved today with the detector technologies at hand. After a discussion of the ILC and the environment in which the experiment will take place, the detector is described in more detail, including the status of the development of the technologies foreseen for each subdetector. The integration of the different sub-systems into an integrated detector is discussed, as is the interface between the detector and the collider. This is followed by a concise summary of the benchmarking which has been performed in order to find an optimal balance between performance and cost. To the end the costing methodology used by ILD is presented, and an updated cost estimate for the detector is presented. The report closes with a summary of the current status and of planned future actions.
