This book presents the proceedings of the international conference “The Middle Ages in the Modern World,” held in Rome November 21-24, 2018. Attended by more than a hundred participants of different ages, educational backgrounds, and places of origin, the conference constituted a landmark in the study of medievalism: the historical discipline, now in full bloom, that investigates the ways in which the thousand-year period between 500 and 1500 was, and continues to be, presented, reconstructed, and imagined in successive eras. The book opens with a substantial bibliography drawn from all of its components, followed by the seven keynote lectures and ninety-three shorter texts - abstracts of the individual conference papers - organized along eight thematic pathways, which together provide a vivid image of the current state of the field.

The retrieval of the past under a fascist ideological lens included not only the image of Romanity (the celebration of Ancient Rome) but also the representation of the Middle Ages. Medievalism represents one of the less familiar and less researched aspects of the cultural policies of Italian Fascism, part of the programmes of national regeneration of the regime, which promoted exhortation of virility, social order and the supremacy of national arts. This article interrogates the representation of the condottieres within Fascist ideology and questions the retrieval of the medieval heritage of the Italian Renaissance in a cinematic perspective. Mussolini’s regime recovered the Risorgimento, the imaginary of a powerful and bellicose country. The identification between Mussolini and the condottieri, propagated through various media, was particularly effective. Once the Fascist regime fell, the heroic and ideological outlook of Fascism was completely reversed in favour of a narrative that exalts pacifism and anti-militarism., La récupération du passé par l’idéologie fasciste a non seulement concerné l’image de la Romanité (la célébration de la Rome antique) mais aussi la représentation du Moyen Âge. Le médiévalisme représente une ligne idéologique, que les recherches autour des politiques culturelles du fascisme ont moins abordée, mais qui fut cruciale car elle reprenait les différents programmes du régime de régénération nationale, comme l’exaltation de la virilité, de l’ordre social, et la suprématie des arts nationaux. Cet article traite de la thématique des condottieres à l’intérieur de l’opération idéologique du régime fasciste et questionne la récupération du patrimoine médiéval de la Renaissance italienne dans une optique cinématographique. Le régime de Mussolini a récupéré l’imaginaire du Risorgimento, qui peignait un pays puissant et belliqueux. L’identification de Mussolini à la figure des condottieres, que véhicula la propagande par plusieurs voies, s’avéra très efficace. À la chute du régime fasciste, cette appréhension héroïque et idéologique des condottieres a été complètement retournée en faveur d’une narration qui exaltait le pacifisme et l’antimilitarisme.

Off-the shelf wireless communication technologies reduce infrastructure deployment costs and are thus attractive for distribution system control. Wireless communication however may lead to variable network performance. Hence the impact of this variability on overall distribution system control behavior needs to be analyzed within the full system context. This paper considers two prominent families of wireless communication technologies: cellular 2G to 4G systems and IEEE 802.11 WiFi. Selected results on network performance and its impact on two distribution system control use-cases are presented. The main focus is on the impact of varying cross-traffic levels, different deployment and propagation scenarios, as well as malicious attacks. A full communication protocols stack, ranging from bare socket interfaces to full-scale IEC61850 implementations with security features, is used within physical testbeds as well as model-based analysis.

The scope of this paper is to address the evolution of distribution grid architectures following the widespread introduction of renewable energy sources. The increasing connection of distributed resources has a strong impact on the topology and the control functionality of the current distribution grids requiring the development of new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions with various degrees of adaptation of the monitoring, communication and control technologies. The costs of ICT based solutions need however to be taken into account, hence it is desirable to work with existing communication networks. The objective of the European FP7 project SmartC2Net in this regard is to enable robust smart grid control utilizing heterogeneous third party communication infrastructures.
