When parametrizing multi-Higgs potentials, it is desirable to express its coefficients via observables. This is routinely done for the 2HDM, but this approach often fails in more elaborate models. Here, we show that the scalar sector of the CP4 3HDM, an intriguing model based on an order-4 $CP$ symmetry, can also be parametrized in an observable-driven manner. The key feature that makes it work is the very special tridiagonal form of the $5\times 5$ neutral Higgs mass matrix. We propose a set of input observables and present an algorithm to reconstruct the coefficients of the potential through linear relations. Equipped with this procedure, we explore the scalar sector of the CP4 3HDM beyond the limitations of previous studies. In particular, we identify a viable and testable regime in which all additional Higgses lie in the 300--600~GeV range. Vortex states of photons, electrons, and other particles are freely propagating wave packets with helicoidal wave fronts winding around the axis of a phase vortex. A particle prepared in a vortex state possesses a non-zero orbital angular momentum projection on the propagation direction, a quantum number that has never been exploited in experimental particle and nuclear physics. Low-energy vortex photons, electrons, neutrons, and helium atoms have been demonstrated in experiment and found numerous applications, and there exist proposals of boosting them to higher energies. However, the verification that a high energy particle is indeed in a vortex state will be a major challenge, since the low energy techniques become impractical for highly energetic particles. Here, we propose a new diagnostic method based of the so-called superkick effect, which can unambiguously detect the presence of a phase vortex. We continue classification of finite groups which can be used as symmetry group of the scalar sector of the four-Higgs-doublet model (4HDM). Our objective is to systematically construct non-abelian groups via the group extension procedure, starting from the abelian groups $A$ and their automorphism groups $\mathrm{Aut}(A)$. Previously, we considered all cyclic groups $A$ available for the 4HDM scalar sector. Here, we further develop the method and apply it to extensions by the remaining rephasing groups $A$, namely $A = \mathbb{Z_2}\times\mathbb{Z_2}$, $\mathbb{Z_4}\times \mathbb{Z_2}$, and $\mathbb{Z_2}\times \mathbb{Z_2}\times \mathbb{Z_2}$. As $\mathrm{Aut}(A)$ grows, the procedure becomes more laborious, but we prove an isomorphism theorem which helps classify all the options. CP4 3HDM is a three-Higgs-doublet model based on a $CP$ symmetry of order 4 (CP4). It is the minimal model incorporating CP4 without leading to accidental symmetries or running into immediate conflict with experiment. Imposing CP4 on the lagrangian induces remarkably tight connections between the scalar and Yukawa sectors, including the unavoidable tree-level flavor-changing neutral couplings (FCNC). Here, we explore whether it is at all possible in the CP4 3HDM to suppressed FCNC to a level compatible with the neutral meson oscillation constraints. We express the FCNC matrices in terms of physical quark observables and quark rotation parameters, and scan the Yukawa parameter space using the quark masses and mixing parameters as input. With this procedure, we find that only two out of the eight possible CP4 Yukawa sectors are compatible with the $K$, $B$, $B_s$ and, in particular, $D$-meson oscillation constraints. The photoelectric effect is not truly instantaneous, but exhibits attosecond delays that can reveal complex molecular dynamics. Sub-femtosecond duration light pulses provide the requisite tools to resolve the dynamics of photoionization. Accordingly, the past decade has produced a large volume of work on photoionization delays following single photon absorption of an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon. However, the measurement of time-resolved core-level photoionization remained out of reach. The required x-ray photon energies needed for core-level photoionization were not available with attosecond tabletop sources. We have now measured the x-ray photoemission delay of core-level electrons, and here report unexpectedly large delays, ranging up to 700 attoseconds in NO near the oxygen K-shell threshold. These measurements exploit attosecond soft x-ray pulses from a free-electron laser (XFEL) to scan across the entire region near the K-shell threshold. Furthermore, we find the delay spectrum is richly modulated, suggesting several contributions including transient trapping of the photoelectron due to shape resonances, collisions with the Auger-Meitner electron that is emitted in the rapid non-radiative relaxation of the molecule, and multi-electron scattering effects. The results demonstrate how x-ray attosecond experiments, supported by comprehensive theoretical modelling, can unravel the complex correlated dynamics of core-level photoionization.

The scalar potential of a multi-Higgs model can possess a rich structure of minima and saddle points, which evolves in an intricate way as the parameters change. In the hot early Universe, it could trigger multi-step phase transitions, with exotic intermediate phases and peculiar domain wall configurations. Here, we provide a glimpse into this richness with the example of the three-Higgs-doublet model with the symmetry group $\Sigma(36)$, either exact or softly broken. We present its phase diagram tracking not only the global minimum but all of its extrema. In particular, we reveal parameter space regions in which the deepest saddle point is charge breaking. This naturally leads to phase transitions between neutral vacua which involve expanding and colliding charge-breaking bubble walls. We also comment on opportunities of multi-step phase transitions, on charge-breaking intermediate phases, and on phase transitions between different charge-breaking vacua. We illustrate the general discussion with two benchmark models, one of which possesses competing saddle points and allows for emergence of bubbles of the same true vacuum but with bubble walls of different nature. The Higgs potentials of extended Higgs sectors exhibit a complex and interesting vacuum structure. When travelling back in time, i.e. going to higher temperatures, the structure may change and exhibit interesting phase patterns and sequences of phases related to the respective minima of the potential. The investigation of the vacuum structure can give us indirect insights in beyond-Standard-Model physics and the evolution of the Universe. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of an intermediate charge-breaking (CB) phase in the 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) type I. The existence has been reported previously by using a simple potential setup. We here confirm that the intermediate CB phase can still exist when using the one-loop corrected effective potential including thermal masses. We discuss its features and the relation with SU(2) symmetry (non-)restoration as well as its consistency with the current experimental data. Multi-Higgs models equipped with global symmetry groups, either exact or softly broken, offer a rich framework for constructions beyond the Standard Model and lead to remarkable phenomenological consequences. Knowing all the symmetry options within each class of models can guide its phenomenological exploration, as confirmed by the vast literature on the two- and three-Higgs-doublet models. Here, we begin a systematic study of finite non-abelian symmetry groups which can be imposed on the scalar sector of the four-Higgs-doublet model (4HDM) without leading to accidental symmetries. In this work, we derive the full list of such non-abelian groups available in the 4HDM that can be constructed as extensions of cyclic groups by their automorphism groups. This list is remarkably restricted but it contains cases which have not been previously studied. CP4 3HDM is a three-Higgs-doublet model based on the $CP$ symmetry of order 4 (CP4). Imposing CP4 leads to remarkable connections between the scalar and Yukawa sectors and unavoidably generates tree-level flavor-changing neutral couplings (FCNC). It remains unclear whether FCNC can be sufficiently suppressed in the CP4 3HDM. In this paper, we systematically explore this issue. We first develop an efficient scanning procedure which takes the quark masses and mixing as input and expresses the FCNC matrices in terms of physical quark observables and quark rotation parameters. This procedure allows us to explore the FCNC effects for all the Yukawa sectors possible within the CP4 3HDM. We find that, out of the eight possible CP4 Yukawa sectors, only two scenarios are compatible with the $K$, $B$, $B_s$ and, in particular, $D$-meson oscillation constraints. Collisions of particles prepared in non--plane-wave states with a non-trivial phase structure, such as vortex states carrying an adjustable orbital angular momentum (OAM), open novel opportunities in atomic, nuclear, and high-energy physics unavailable for traditional scattering experiments. Recently, it was argued that photoinduced processes such as $\gamma d \to pn$ and $\gamma p \to \Delta^+$ initiated by a high-energy vortex photon should display a remarkable threshold shift and a sizable cross section enhancement as the impact parameter $b$ of the target hadron with respect to the vortex photon axis goes to zero. In this work, we theoretically explore whether this effect exists within the quantum-field-theoretic treatment of the scattering process. We do not rely on the semiclassical assumption of pointlike, non-spreading target particle and, instead, consider the toy process of heavy particle pair production in collision of two light particles prepared as a Laguerre-Gaussian and a compact Gaussian wave packets, paying special attention to the threshold behavior of the cross section. We do observe threshold smearing due to non-monochromaticity of the wave packets, but we do not confirm the near-threshold enhancement. Vortex states of photons, electrons, and other particles are non--plane-wave solutions of the corresponding wave equation with helicoidal wave fronts. These states possess an intrinsic orbital angular momentum with respect to the average propagation direction, which represents a new degree of freedom, previously unexplored in particle or nuclear collisions. Vortex states of photons, electrons, neutrons, and neutral atoms have been experimentally produced, albeit at low energies, and are being intensively explored. Anticipating future experimental progress, one can ask what additional insights on nuclei and particles one can gain once collisions of high-energy vortex states become possible. This review describes the present-day landscape of physics opportunities, experimental progress and suggestions relevant to vortex states in high energy collisions. We demonstrate an accurate phase retrieval of XUV atomic ionization by streaking the photoelectron in a circularly polarized IR laser field. The streaking phase can then be converted to the atomic time delay containing the Wigner and continuum-continuum components. Our demonstration is based on a numerical solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. We test this technique using the hydrogen atom ionized by an isolated attosecond XUV pulse across a wide range of photon energies. In parallel, we run a series of RABBITT simulations and demonstrate equivalence of the phase and timing information provided by the two methods. This validates the proposed technique and makes it a useful tool that can be applied to a broad range of atomic and molecular targets exposed to XUV radiation from novel free-electron laser sources., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

An atom placed in an optical vortex close to the axis may, upon absorbing a photon, acquire a transverse momentum much larger than the transverse momentum of any plane-wave component of the vortex lightfield. This surprising phenomenon dubbed superkick has been clarified previously in terms of the atom wave packet evolution in the field of an optical vortex treated classically. Here, we study this effect within the quantum field theoretical (QFT) framework. We consider collision of a Bessel twisted wave with a compact Gaussian beam focused to a small focal spot $\sigma$ located at distance $b$ from the twisted beam axis. Through a qualitative discussion supported by exact analytical and numerical calculations, we recover the superkick phenomenon for $\sigma \ll b$ and explore its limits when $\sigma$ becomes comparable to $b$. On the way to the final result within the QFT treatment, we encountered and resolved apparent paradoxes related to subtle issues of the formalism. Interaction of atoms with twisted light is the subject of intense experimental and theoretical investigation. In almost all studies, the atom is viewed as a localized probe of the twisted light field. However, as argued in this paper, conceptually novel effects will arise if light-atom interaction is studied in the double-twisted regime with delocalized atoms, that is, either via twisted light absorption by atom vortex beam, or via two-twisted-photon spectroscopy of atoms in a non-vortex but delocalized state. Even for monochromatic twisted photons and for an infinitely narrow line, absorption will occur over a finite range of detuning. Inside this range, a rapidly varying absorption probability is predicted, revealing interference fringes induced by two distinct paths leading to the same final state. The number, location, height and contrast of these fringes can give additional information on the excitation process which would not be accessible in usual spectroscopic settings. We investigate the influence of relativistic nondipole effects on the photoelectron spectra of argon, particularly in the low kinetic energy region (0 eV - 5 eV). In our experiment, we use intense linearly polarised 800 nm laser pulse to ionise Ar from a jet and we record photoelectron energy and momentum distributions using a reaction microscope (REMI). Our measurements show that nondipole effect can cause an energy-dependent asymmetry along the laser propagation direction in the photoelectron energy and momentum spectra. Model simulation based on time-dependent Dirac equation (TDDE) can reproduce our measurement results. The electron trajectory analysis based on classical model reveals that the photoelectron which obtains negative momentum shift along laser propagation direction is caused by the interplay between the Lorenz force induced radiation pressure during its free propagation in continuum and re-scattering by Coulomb potential of the parent ion when it is driven back by the laser field., Comment: 11 pages, 15 Figures

We develop methods to study the scalar sector of multi-Higgs models with large discrete symmetry groups that are softly broken. While in the exact symmetry limit, the model has very few parameters and can be studied analytically, proliferation of quadratic couplings in the most general softly broken case makes the analysis cumbersome. We identify two sets of soft breaking terms which play different roles: those which preserve the symmetric vacuum expectation value alignment, and the remaining terms which shift it. Focusing on alignment preserving terms, we check which structural features of the symmetric parent model are conserved and which are modified. We find remarkable examples of structural features which are inherited from the parent symmetric model and which persist even when no exact symmetry is left. Muon decay is self-analyzing: the spectral-angular distribution of the emitted electron reveals the spin orientation of the polarized muon. Here, we show that the same feature applies to muons in non-plane-wave states and helps reveal the rich polarization opportunities available. We focus on the so-called vortex states, in which the muon carries a non-zero orbital angular momentum with respect to the average propagation direction and exhibits a cone structure in the momentum distribution. We compute the spectrum and the angular distribution of the electrons emitted in decays of vortex muons and show that the most revealing observable is not the angular distribution but the fixed-angle electron spectra. Even for very small cone opening angles of the vortex muons, it will be easy to observe significant modifications of the electron spectra which would allow one to distinguish vortex muons from approximately plane wave muons, as well as to differentiate among various polarization states. Deriving necessary and sufficient conditions for a scalar potential to be bounded from below (BFB) is a difficult task beyond the simplest cases. Recently, a set of BFB conditions was proposed for the $A_4$-invariant three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM). However, that set of conditions relied on numerical scan, and a complete analytic proof was lacking. Here, we fill this gap. We prove that the conjectured BFB conditions are indeed necessary and sufficient within the neutral Higgs subspace. We bypass technically challenging direct algebraic computations with a novel technique that relies on an auxiliary function, which is related to the Higgs potential but which is easier to analyze. This technique may finally be sufficient to tackle the more involved case of the original Weinberg's 3HDM model., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

CP4 3HDM is a unique three-Higgs-doublet model equipped with a higher-order CP symmetry in the scalar and Yukawa sector. Based on a single assumption (the minimal model with a CP-symmetry of order 4 and no accidental symmetry), it leads to a remarkable correlation between its scalar and Yukawa sectors, which echoes in its phenomenology. A recent scan of the parameter space of CP4 3HDM under the assumption of scalar alignment identified a few dozens of points which passed many flavour constraints. In the present work we show, however, that almost all of these points are now ruled out by the recent LHC searches of $t \to H^+ b$ with subsequent hadronic decays of $H^+$. Apart from a few points with charged Higgses heavier than the top quark, only one point survives all the checks, the model with an exotic, non-2HDM-like generation pattern of $H^+$ couplings with quarks. We discuss a rather common but often unnoticed pitfall which arises when deriving the bounded-from-below (BFB) conditions in multi-Higgs models with softly broken global symmetries. Namely, necessary and sufficient BFB conditions derived for the case with an exact symmetry can be ruined by introducing soft symmetry breaking terms. Using $S_4$ and $A_4$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet models as an example, we argue that all published necessary and sufficient BFB conditions, even those which are correct for the exactly symmetric case, are no longer sufficient if soft symmetry breaking is added. Using the geometric formalism, we derive the exact necessary and sufficient BFB conditions for the 3HDM with the symmetry group $S_4$, either exact or softly broken, and review the situation for the $A_4$-symmetric case., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

The measurement of the tunneling time in attosecond experiments, termed attoclock, triggered a hot debate about the tunneling time, the role of time in quantum mechanics, where the interaction with the laser pulse involves two regimes of a different character, the multiphoton and the tunneling (field-) ionization. In the adiabatic field calibration, one of us (O. K.) developed in earlier works a real tunneling time model and showed that the model fits well to the experimental data of Landsmann et al. (Optica {\bf 1}, 343 2014). In the present work, it is shown that the model explains the experimental result in the nonadiabatic field calibration, where one reaches a good agreement with the experimental data of Hofmann et al. (J. of Mod. Opt. {\bf 66}, 1052, 2019). Furthermore, we confirm the result with the numerical integration of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. The model is appealing because it offers a clear picture of the multiphoton and tunneling field-ionization regimes. In the nonadiabatic case (the nonadiabatic field calibration), the ionization is mainly driven by multiphoton absorption. Surprisingly, at a field strength $F \le F_a$ ($F_a$ is the atomic field strength) the model always predicts a time delay with respect to the quantum limit $\tau_a$ at $F=F_a$. For an adiabatic tunneling the saturation at the limit ($F=F_a$) explains the well-known Hartman effect or Hartman paradox.

Collisions of twisted particles --- that is, non-plane-wave states of photons, electrons, or any other particle, equipped with a non-zero orbital angular momentum (OAM) with respect to its propagation direction --- offer novel ways to probe particle structure and interactions. In the recent paper \cite{Ivanov:2019vxe}, we argued that resonance production in twisted photon collisions or twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation gives access to parity- and spin-sensitive observables in inclusive cross sections, even when the initial particles are unpolarized. Here, we explore these features in detail, providing a qualitative picture and illustrating it with numerical examples. We show how one can detect parity-violating effects in collisions of unpolarized twisted photons and how one can produce almost $100\%$ polarized vector mesons in unpolarized twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation. These examples highlight the unprecedented level of control over polarization offered by twisted particles, impossible in the usual plane wave collisions., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures

"Twisted particles" refer to non-plane-wave states of photons, electrons, hadrons, or any other particle which carry non-zero, adjustable orbital angular momentum with respect to their average propagation direction. Twisted photons and electrons have already been experimentally demonstrated, and one can expect creation of twisted states of other particles in future. Such states can be brought in collisions, offering a completely new degree of freedom in collider experiments and, especially, a novel tool for hadronic physics. We recently showed that $2 \to 1$ processes with two twisted particles such as resonance production in twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation give access to observables which are difficult or impossible to probe in the usual plane-wave collisions. In this paper, we discuss in detail surprising kinematic features of this process, focusing on spinless particle annihilation. They include (1) a new dimension in the final momentum space available in twisted annihilation, (2) interference fringes emerging in the cross section as a function of the total energy, and (3) the built-in mass spectrometric capability of this process, that is, simultaneous production and automatic angular separation of several resonances with different masses in monochromatic twisted particle annihilation experiment running at fixed energy. Twisted, or vortex, particles refer to freely propagating non-plane-wave states with helicoidal wave fronts. In this state, the particle possesses a non-zero orbital angular momentum with respect to its average propagation direction. Twisted photons and electrons have been experimentally demonstrated, and creation of other particles in twisted states can be anticipated. If brought in collisions, twisted states offer a new degree of freedom to particle physics, and it is timely to analyze what new insights may follow. Here, we theoretically investigate resonance production in twisted photon collisions and twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation and show that these processes emerge as a completely novel probe of spin and parity-sensitive observables in fully inclusive cross sections with unpolarized initial particles. This is possible because the initial state with a non-zero angular momentum explicitly breaks the left-right symmetry even when averaging over helicities. In particular, we show how one can produce almost $100\%$ polarized vector mesons in unpolarized twisted $e^+e^-$ annihilation and how to control its polarization state., Comment: 5+2 pages, 2 figures

The scalar potential of the N-Higgs-doublet model (NHDM) is best analyzed not in the space of N complex doublets $\phi_a$ but in the $N^2$-dimensional space of real-valued bilinears constructed of $\phi_a^\dagger \phi_b$. In particular, many insights have been gained into CP violation in the 2HDM and 3HDM by studying how generalized CP transformations (GCPs) act in this bilinear space. These insights relied on the fact that GCPs, which involved an odd number of mirror reflection, could be clearly distinguished from Higgs family transformations by the sign of the determinant of the transformation matrix. It was recently pointed out that this criterion fails starting from 4HDM, where the reflection/rotation dichotomy does not exist anymore. In this paper, we restore intuition by finding a different quantity which faithfully discriminates between GCPs and Higgs family transformations in the bilinear space for any number of Higgs doublets. We also establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for an orthogonal transformation in the bilinear space to represent a viable transformation back in the space of N doublets, which is helpful if one prefers to build an NHDM directly in the bilinear space., Comment: 7 pages

Establishing if multi-Higgs potentials are bounded from below (BFB) can be rather challenging, and it may impede efficient investigation of all phenomenological consequences of such models. In this paper, we find the necessary and sufficient BFB conditions for the Three-Higgs-Doublet model (3HDM) with the global symmetry group $U(1)\times U(1)$. We observed an important role played by charge-breaking directions in the Higgs space, even for situations when a good-looking neutral minimum exists. This remark is not limited to the particular model we consider but represents a rather general feature of elaborate multi-Higgs potentials which must be carefully dealt with. Also, applying this method to Weinberg's model (the $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetric 3HDM) turned out to be more challenging than was believed in the literature. Landau-Yang theorem is sometimes formulated as a selection rule forbidding two real (that is, non-virtual) photons with zero total momentum to be in the state of the total angular momentum J=1. In this paper we discuss whether the theorem itself and this particular formulation can be extended to a pair of two {\em twisted} photons, which carry orbital angular momentum with respect to their propagation direction. We point out possible sources of confusion, which may arise both from the unusual features of twisted photons and from the fact that usual proofs of the Landau-Yang theorem operate in the center of motion reference frame, which, strictly speaking, exists only for plane waves. We show with an explicit calculation that a pair of twisted photons does have a non-zero overlap with the J=1 state. What is actually forbidden is production of a spin-1 particle by such a photon pair, and in this formulation the Landau-Yang theorem is rock-solid. Higgs doublets may come in three generations. The scalar sector of the resulting three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM) may be constrained by global symmetry groups $G$ leading to characteristic phenomenology. There exists the full list of symmetry groups $G$ realizable in the 3HDM scalar sector and the expressions for $G$-symmetric scalar potentials written in special bases where the generators of $G$ take simple form. However recognizing the presence of a symmetry in a generic basis remains a major technical challenge, which impedes efficient exploration of the 3HDM parameter space. In this paper, we solve this problem using the recently proposed approach, in which basis-independent conditions are formulated as relations among basis-covariant objects. We develop the formalism and derive basis-independent necessary and sufficient conditions for the 3HDM scalar sector to be invariant under each of the realizable symmetry group. Physical observables cannot depend on the basis one chooses to describe fields. Therefore, all physically relevant properties of a model are, in principle, expressible in terms of basis-invariant combinations of the parameters. However, in many cases it becomes prohibitively difficult to establish key physical features exclusively in terms of basis invariants. Here, we advocate an alternative route in such cases: the formulation of basis-invariant statements in terms of basis-covariant objects. We give several examples where the basis-covariant path is superior to the traditional approach in terms of basis invariants. Multi-Higgs models equipped with global symmetries produce scalar dark matter (DM) candidates stabilized by the unbroken symmetry. It is remarkable that a conserved CP symmetry can also stabilize DM candidates, provided it is a CP symmetry of order higher than two. CP4 3HDM, the three-Higgs-doublet model with CP symmetry of order 4, is the simplest example of this kind. It contains two mass-degenerate scalar DM candidates $\varphi$ and $\bar\varphi$, each of them being a CP4 eigenstate and, therefore, its own antiparticle. A novel phenomenological feature of this model is the presence of $\varphi\varphi \leftrightarrow \bar\varphi\bar\varphi$ conversion process, which conserves CP. It offers a rare example of DM models in which self-interaction in the dark sector can significantly affect cosmological and astrophysical observables. Here, we explore the thermal evolution of these DM species in the asymmetric regime. We assume that a mechanism external to CP4 3HDM produces an initial imbalance of the densities of $\varphi$ and $\bar\varphi$. As the Universe cools down, we track the evolution of the asymmetry through different stages, and determine how the final asymmetry depends on the interplay between the conversion and annihilation $\varphi\bar\varphi \to $ SM and on the initial conditions. We begin with the analytic treatment of Boltzmann equations, present a detailed qualitative description of the process, and then corroborate it with numerical results obtained using a dedicated computer code. Three-Higgs-doublet models (3HDM) allow for a novel, physically distinct form of CP invariance: CP symmetry of order 4 (CP4). Due to the large basis change freedom in 3HDM, it is imperative to recognize the presence of a possibly hidden CP4 in a basis-invariant way. In the present work, we solve this problem and establish basis-invariant necessary and sufficient conditions for a 3HDM to possess a CP4 symmetry. We also derive a basis-invariant criterion to decide whether or not a CP4 symmetric 3HDM possesses any additional CP symmetry, as well as a criterion to decide whether or not CP4 is spontaneously broken., Comment: 32 pages
